What a year it’s been. I’ve been deeply immersed in the music industry for a long time, and as I look back at the past year, I believe that 2018 may have been the most exhilarating period of technological innovation and adoption to date. As an industry tech consultant and development veteran, I expect the rapid advancements to speed up even more in the coming year, with artists and companies continuing to push the boundaries of music management, creation, presentation, and fan engagement. Looking ahead to 2019, I believe we’ll see the following music tech trends moving to the forefront across the entire industry: Music Recognition Technology The music industry faces a massive challenge when it comes to monitoring and tracking where and how often a song is being played. Without effective Music Recognition Technology (MRT) artists, publishers, and other rights owners lose their royalties each time music is played in a club, bar or any other venue. And, of course, this is a very serious problem, with some estimating that 25–35% of mechanical licenses in the U.S. are unrecognized on streaming platforms alone. Fortunately, a range of experts around the world are working diligently to solve this major issue through MRT innovations and implementation. Automatic music recognition isn’t new. In fact, Broadcast Data Systems (BDS) was widely-deployed by the early 1990s for recognizing songs played on U.S. radio stations. However, even though the core algorithm for recognizing music has existed for decades, a large percentage of venues are still not adequately equipped with MRT. The good news is that many companies such as DJ Monitor heading up the technology side. And of course, once the music is effectively recognized, the data is sent to the performance rights organizations (PRO) that handle payment distribution. Paris-based Yacast is another tech company working in this space, as well as SoundHound Inc.’s Houndify, Google’s Sound Search, and others. Artificial Intelligence AI usage is proliferating throughout the music industry in two ways: for predictive analytics and composing music. On the predictive analytics side, experts are now using AI to predict the musical tastes of users based on song duration. Researchers determined that people will cancel the playback of songs they dislike and will listen all the way through songs they enjoy, which can be used to provide a base dataset to train a machine learning-powered recommendation engine. Machines being used to compose music is certainly a controversial concept. Can something as personal and emotional as music be created by AI with positive results? Although the answer depends on who you ask, many tech brands are experimenting with this idea, including Sony and IBM, using musical components like mood, cadence, and style to compose new songs. An example of an AI composition program is The Flow Machine Project, led by Francois Pachet at Sony Computer Science Laboratories and Pierre and Marie Curie University. With the aim of “designing and implementing the next generation of authoring tools,” The Flow Machine Project can be used by songwriters to create a base from which to expand upon or even to completely compose a track. The Ai program was used to write “Daddy’s Car” in the style of The Beatles, and the results are definitely interesting, as can be heard here: AR, VR & Holograms You’ve certainly read statistics about the fact that millennials prefer to spend their money and time on experiences rather than on objects, and the industry is taking note. At the same time, experiences need to have true value to gain traction with younger audiences. Industry players are experimenting with various ways to use AR, VR, and holograms to create exciting experiences for consumers in the world of music. AR can be used to bring a video to an audience and make the listener part of the video. And how about using AR to bring a concert to fans in their own environment? The possibilities are virtually limitless, and I expect to see massive innovations in this sector in the coming year. VR and music are a natural fit, and although 360-degree videos have garnered some attention and interest, they’re just the beginning of what’s to come. Imagine if artists added an extra date on their tours to perform from their studio for millions of people wearing high-end headsets in the comfort of their own homes? Hologram tours are a real thing, with concert-goers able to see their favorite musicians from the past in a live setting. From the controversial debut of the Tupac Shakur hologram at Coachella in 2012, things are now starting to ramp up, with an upcoming hologram-based Roy Orbison tour in the United States. While the specifics of presentation may have a long way to go, it appears that both industry players and fans are interested in this concept, and I imagine that we’ll see big moves in this sector in 2019. Wearables Many innovations are being worked on in the field of music wearables. One fascinating example is BodyRocks, a company that creates wearable technology that translates audio signals into physical vibrations onto the body. It’s a very interesting concept that seeks not to make you feel like you’re standing next to a giant speaker rumbling the floor at a concert, but instead to develop an immersive physical experience from listening to music. And what about sunglasses? Music software experts Echo Music have designed IP6 waterproof bone-conduction sunglasses that play music and radio without completely cutting off the world around the user. Without the need for any wires, bone conduction technology transmits sound waves to the skull via vibrations. Additionally, Echo Music’s product includes an advanced sound-leak reduction system to prevent others from being subjected to hearing the user’s music. And this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what’s possible. The industry is intertwining with music technology at an accelerated rate with no signs of slowing down. As we approach a new year, we can look forward to continued innovations that enhance music management, creation, and fan engagement, while improving the ability to market and personalize the experience of music listening for everyone in profoundly fresh ways. The luminous projection apparatus illustrated herewith, when adapted to a balance of precision, permits of effecting weighings very rapidly. For the same approximation, the velocity of oscillation becomes five or six times greater, and, by the method employed, the last centigrammes and the milligrammes and their fractions are estimated directly, with immediate verification. As the apparatus is independent of the parts of the balance, it can be placed on all the existing laboratory balances of precision. The modification introduced into the balance consists in the displacing of the center of gravity of the beam in such a way as to diminish the sensitiveness, and consequently to obtain a much greater velocity, and then, by optical means, to considerably increase the amplitude of the oscillations. Instead of the oscillations being observed through the microscope, they are projected upon a divided screen forming a dial, the division of which is seen by transmitted light. The apparatus consists of a small achromatic objective placed at the extremity of the tube of a microscope, in which there is a divided screen that receives the enlarged image of the reticule fixed upon the needle. Upon this reticule are projected the rays (condensed by a powerful lens) that come from a luminous source placed behind the balance. The focusing is done by means of a rack and pinion. The luminous source employed is a gas burner with reflector. This is placed in a walnut box in order to prevent any projection of heat upon the balance. This burner, thus isolated, is lighted for but one or two minutes at a maximum, at the end of each weighing. So, on fixing a thermometer in the cage, we find that no variation, ever so slight, occurs in the temperature. In order to effect a weighing, the gas being turned down to a taper, we proceed as with an ordinary balance until the extremity of the needle no longer emerges from the lower dial. Then we count the difference of the number of the divisions made by the needle to the right and left of zero. This difference, multiplied by the approximate value, in milligrammes, of each division of this dial (value given by the instrument) immediately gives the number of centigrammes and milligrammes that must be added to the weights already placed upon the pan of the balance in order to obtain an equilibrium, to about a half division of the lower dial. The value of each division of this dial varies from 3 to 10 milligrammes according as the balance shows 0.1 or 0.5 milligramme. As the dial has 10 divisions on each side of the central mark, we thus estimate, without tentatives, the three last centigrammes or the last decigramme, according to the sensitiveness. At this moment the doors of the cage are closed, in order to prevent draughts of air, the gas is turned on by means of a regulating cock, and the balance is manipulated by first lowering the beam and then bringing the pans to a standstill. We then read the difference of the divisions traversed to the left and right upon the luminous dial through the image of the reticule. The images are reversed upon the dial, but practice soon causes this petty difficulty to disappear. This number of divisions indicates the number of milligrammes and fractions of a milligramme by which it is necessary to shift the counterpoise on its arm in order to obtain a perfect equilibrium, which latter is verified by a simple reading. Every half division of the dial corresponds, as to weight, to the sensitiveness indicated for the instrument. With a little practice a weighing effected as above described takes but a quarter or a fifth of the time that it does with an ordinary balance.— Revue Industrielle. Why is Tesla's coming Robotaxi such a big deal? Uber was partially invented right in front of me in a Paris snowstorm by Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick. That set me on a path of understanding Transportation as a Service, which really is what Uber is. You order a ride on a computer, usually your phone, and one arrives. If I want to take one to San Francisco Airport it usually costs around $70 for an hour drive from my home in San Jose. Uber grew from that Paris snowstorm to being in many countries within three years. Uber is, so far, human driven. Humans have some advantages, they come with their own cars, so Uber didn't need to take on any inventory risk. But they come with many disadvantages too. Some talk too much. Some smell. Even of weed. Some arrive inebriated. Some abuse their riders, or worse. Yes, most of the time a great human shows up with a new model car that's well maintained and clean, but use Uber all around the world, like I have, and you'll hit these problems. Inconsistencies. And notice we haven't talked about how much the human costs, either in dollars (minimum wage is about $20 in California) or in safety costs (human tragedy in cars is pretty frequent, with around 40,000 deaths in USA every year alone). While a new Tesla costs about $3 to sit in your driveway every hour, add a human and the cost runs much more. Go back to Elon's first sales pitch (he gave it to me personally at the beginning) and he talked about beating legacy auto on price and experience. He's been planning Robotaxi since before the Model 3 shipped in 2017. How do I know that? Because only his cars have electric vents, something that still gets him derided. Mercedes engineers told me personally ts customers hated electric vents, and that they wanted knobs instead. But it is the electric vents that will give you a better experience, along with a number of other things, including a better audio system than the others have. But compared to the others it will have a better brand due to this focus on experience and consistency. What makes a great brand? Not, necessarily having the best product. Starbucks, for instance, doesn't, and I can find you better things to drink than Coke, but those two are great brands because they are consistent and ubiquitous. So, why does Tesla matter here? What about Waymo, Zoox, Cruise, or a handful of other potential Robotaxi competitors? What is its moat? Years ago I did consumer research, going around America asking people "are you willing to get into a vehicle that has no steering wheel?" Most answered "f**k no." I have studied several technological paradigm shifts and heard protests every time, but this was the most adamant of my career. I was talking about this with Peter Norvig, who used to play a key role at Google R&D and claims he is the guy who got the funding to start its autonomous vehicle project, about this. He told me Google already had the data to know that after three rides in a Waymo they will deeply trust autonomous vehicles to the point that they will want to use them for every ride. It is this key point "use them for every ride" that gets execs and investors interested in autonomous vehicles. I've heard this too from many San Francisco residents who love Waymo's service of being able to hop into an autonomous vehicle. But why does Tesla matter? Tesla's AI started out behind Waymo/Google's but has been learning faster. I believe that it is already better than Waymo at generalization (Waymo is only available in a few cities while my Tesla drove me 900 miles to Sun Valley from my home in San Jose). Yaman had an excellent show with Omar of Whole Mars Catalog that everyone should watch that compares Waymo and Tesla. Already Tesla's AI is smoother in many places. Back to the point. If you arrive in Las Vegas for a conference or on vacation which one do you choose to use? Tesla? Waymo? Zoox? Cruise? Uber? Lyft? Or some other brand or taxi? My prediction is that Tesla will win most of this business in 2030. Why? Experience. Being in a Tesla vehicle is safer in a crash than the vehicles that the other companies use.

If three vehicles were waiting nearby then the drivers weren't being used efficiently, pissing them off for not getting paid. If none are nearby then it takes too long for a vehicle to get to you. So who has the biggest fleet? Of autonomous vehicles? None of them other than Tesla is on my street and on my street there are 13 Teslas already. So many that I can walk to another Tesla in seconds. Faster than I could get one in San Francisco. It wouldn't even need to drive to me! The fleet size matters in many other ways, particularly experience. Why? Well, let's say there are a bunch of Teslas on the road in front of you. They can "see" all sorts of things, from fires, to protests, to police actions, and can report those to the control system that runs the network. So it could route around problems faster than any other network. That makes the experience better. If you can see that it has real-time info, you will learn to trust the one that has the real-time info on the screen more than one that doesn't have as much info. Which gets us to another thing. All us Tesla owners have its app running on our phones. That could feed a lot of new data into the network, like about how busy a nightclub or a restaurant is. Or details about a news event. Literally none of us have a Waymo app on our phones. Most humans haven't even heard of, or seen, a Waymo. Uber? Sure! But it comes with a human which brings the above problems and a higher price. Speaking of price. A Waymo has quite a few expensive LiDARs and more compute on board than Tesla does to handle both camera feeds and LiDAR feeds. Tesla has gone with a camera only approach, which is not only cheaper per vehicle, but looks a lot nicer too and can be hidden inside a standard-looking vehicle. Waymo's have gotten vandalized several times because they are the symbols of a new, dystopian, age, as one of my friends put it. Tesla's just are everywhere in many cities, especially anyone near San Francisco so won't attract the same kind of attention. So, my predictions: By 2030: Tesla robotaxi will be cheaper than other networks. Tesla will have a better screen and audio system for you to use. Movies, education, music, video conference calls, etc, will be better in a Tesla and more consistent. Tesla will be safer, and go more places. Tesla's route picker will be way better. Especially around massive events like concerts, sporting events, and more. Tesla's vents, seats, mirrors, audio level, are automatically set to personalize to you. Tesla's app and vehicles gives you more details, which leads to a better experience "there's a 14-minute line at the McDonalds." Let's put it bluntly: Tesla's customer acquisition cost will be nearly zero, while Waymo or Zoox will need to spend a lot more to create both awareness and behavior. I don't think they will be able to convince a Tesla user to switch to their platforms given the better experience and lower price I'm expecting Tesla to have.
