Service department activity at franchised dealerships fell significantly in July, according to analysis of Xtime metrics cited in a Cox Automotive Data Point report. The report showed service revenue down slightly for the third consecutive month after reaching record highs in March and April,

But before you call me a blasphemous heathen, I will ask for just a few moments of your time to offer context. I even have some ideas and solutions. When I say “Nobody cares about security,” I mean it in the same way I remind folks that nobody cares about backups. What they care about is RESTORES. To quote my friend and colleague Tom LaRock, backups are worthless. Restores are priceless. Ultimately, the thing we need is the ability to get our data back if something catastrophic happens. This means we need A) the data itself and B) the ability to restore it. In order to have those things, we must first perform backups, and we’re forced to perform them regularly. (And, I can’t emphasize enough, that those backups must be tested. Otherwise, you have Schrodinger’s Backup ). Over the decades that the IT industry has existed, we’ve consistently improved both the technology and techniques of backups, from the “grandfather, father, son” rotation scheme of the 80’s and 90’s to the “3-2-1” rule first used in 2009 and onward. We’ve done so NOT because we care about the backups themselves, but the sheer frequency of unexpected and catastrophic data loss events serve as both object lessons and cautionary tales that drive our willingness to invest effort and money in backups nevertheless. So much so that, when some part of the organization questions the necessity (and the costs – from software to hardware to staff time) of backups, there’s usually a recent event that IT professionals can easily point to and say, “Remember how horrible that was? Remember the cost? We don’t want THAT to happen again, do we?” The ability to back up and efficiently restore data is an insurance policy that guards the company against even greater lost revenue. The Opposite of Love Isn’t Hate; It’s Apathy This brings me back to my original point: Nobody (i.e., business leaders) cares about security. What they care about is avoiding lost revenue due to application downtime, extortion, and lawsuits. Now, that’s a pretty hefty list, and one might think it’s more than enough to justify (almost) any cost of beefing up a company’s information security posture and capabilities. But look at that list of consequences again and consider it from a purely business point of view. Each of those concerns can be addressed in other ways, from built-in redundancy to cyber liability insurance. These mitigations are (or at least appear to be, from a business standpoint) less expensive than the investment needed to improve infosec. What’s worse, many of you reading this will notice that I left two commonly cited consequences off my initial list: fines and damage to reputation. I did that because the prevailing attitude among business leaders is: Damage to the company’s reputation SOUNDS bad, but (so the thinking goes) it’s really too amorphous to quantify. Plus, many companies in recent memory were the victims of massive cyber attacks, took a hit to their reputation or stock price, but saw it rebound a week later with no other ill effects. (again, that’s the belief. More on this later) The fines currently in place appear to be lower than the expected cost to improve the company’s security posture. However, the financial bottom line is only part of the reason businesses ignore their information needs. The other reasons are equally challenging to address: Infosec issues are, almost by their very nature, complex. They are certainly more complex than having up-to-date backups. They might be more complex than any other category of risk the company will face. Cyber threats are constantly changing and expensive to preemptively address. There’s usually no single “right” answer to “How much infosec do we need?” To put it another way, the broad answer to addressing both the issue of backups and infosec is that one needs to establish healthy habits. But the habits for backups are akin to remembering to brush your teeth in the morning. Important, but straightforward. Whereas the habits needed for proper information hygiene are akin to making healthy heart choices: the path to optimizing your cardiovascular health might involve not just one but a range of habits – from eating healthy foods (and avoiding unhealthy ones) to getting the right amount of exercise and sleep. But even within those broad instructions lie a range of nuances. What, exactly, are “healthy foods”? (Organic? Low-starch? Unprocessed? Keto friendly?) What type of exercise will be most effective? (Cardio? Weight training? Crossfit?) Underlying all of those variations is the very real chance that none of it may help – not because the person isn’t committed, but because there are so many other factors – from age to genetics to individual metabolism – that it still might not work. And even after adjusting for every single other variable, there’s the genuine possibility that a person can do everything right and still succumb to some other disease or physical failure. That last point – that despite our health goals, we may still have health problems – is far closer to the reality of infosec than many readers might realize. A few years ago, Cisco CEO John Chambers stated, “There are only two types of companies: those that have been hacked and those who don’t know they’ve been hacked yet.” Abe Silber, CEO at CyberCure.com, succinctly identified the core issue: “The problem with security is that it’s impossible to measure your ROI. Even if we can measure the cost of a security incident (not an easy task) it’s almost impossible to measure the likelihood of preventing them (hence ROI) based on different security solutions. So it’s not that business people don’t care. It’s that we (IT practitioners) have no way to show them what they get for their money. If I spend x amount on honeypots, how less likely am I to get hacked?
(We can try to make the case that) Security helps you not lose money, like insurance. But unlike insurance, it’s not guaranteed protection. I can tell you firsthand that it’s easier to sell a CEO a $25,000 cyber insurance policy than a $10,000 security solution.” This Is Only the Beginning. Deadpool and Wolverine is currently taking the world by storm. It has officially surpassed the $1 billion mark and has dethroned Joker to become the highest-grossing rated R film of all time. Everyone’s talking about it, and the one thing that people are talking about the most is all the cameos. MCU movies, especially now that they’re in their Multiverse phase, are filled with a litany of cameos and easter eggs, and Deadpool and Wolverine is no exception. With so many appearing throughout the film, even the most eagle-eyed MCU fan would find it hard to spot them all out. So, to help you out, here are all the Deadpool and Wolverine Cameos in order. All the Deadpool and Wolverine Cameos Happy Hogan One of the O.G.s of the MCU, Happy Hogan has been a part of the universe since the very first Iron Man. His character has evolved throughout the years, and in Deadpool and Wolverine, he is seen managing the Avengers. Thor The God of Thunder makes a brief appearance where he’s seen comforting Deadpool on one of the TVA’s monitors. Whether this was just a one-off joke or indicative of a future storyline remains to be seen. First-Appearance Wolverine And speaking of the first-appearance variant of the Wolverine, another MCU hero is also shown in that scene… The Hulk The jolly green giant can be seen fighting Wolverine and smacking the hell out of Deadpool. The Human Torch Chris Evans returns to the MCU to reprise a superhero role, and it’s not Captain America. Years before he picked up the iconic shield, Chris Evans played the Human Torch in The Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Sabretooth Tyler Mane played Logan’s brother in the very first X-Men movie. Now, 24 years later, he once again returns to play Sabretooth in a very brief but enjoyable cameo. Pyro Another X-Men villain alumni who appeared in the film was Pyro from the original X-Men film trilogy. Pyro surprisingly gets more screen time than his contemporaries, but this was a welcomed surprise as he was great in the role. And Pyro and Sabretooth aren’t the only X-men villains who make it into the film, there are plenty more who show up, including: Toad The green and gross character has made two appearances in live-action movies before: the first time was in X-Men (2000), and the second time was in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Azazel The resident teleporter of the Hellfire Club, Azazel returns in Deadpool and Wolverine as one of Cassandra’s goons. Lady Deathstrike Lady Deathstrike was last seen battling Wolverine to death in X2. Spoiler alert, but she lost. Like in a gruesome way. However, it would be nice to see the character fight Wolverine or even X-23 in the future. Psylocke The sword-wielding mutant was last seen as one of Apocalypse’s horsewomen in X-Men: Apocalypse. Random side note: I had no idea the character also made an appearance in X-Men: The Last Stand, and I’ve seen that movie numerous times. Might have to do a rewatch to see if I can spot him in the background 👀 Juggernaut Although the Juggernaut gets no lines in the movie, he does play a pretty big part in it. Or at least, his helmet does. The Russian Apart from the X-Men bad guys, another villain who returns to the big screen is The Russian from The Punisher (2004). Alioth The unstoppable force known as Alioth returns to the MCU. He was first seen in the Disney+ show Loki. Now, this movie has had a ton of bad guys, but they’ve also brought back old heroes (including a brand new one). Blade Blade wasn’t Marvel’s first film, but it was one of its first hits. The Blade film predates the X-Men and Spider-Man films, and it’s nice to see the character and the actor (Wesley Snipes) get the recognition they deserve. Elektra Jennifer Gardner’s Elektra didn’t have a ton of success. She was introduced in Daredevil (2003), a movie that most people would say is just okay. Then, 2 years later, she starred in her own film, which most people would say is downright bad. However, she finally gets her redemption in Deadpool and Wolverine. Gambit Channing Tatum’s Gambit isn’t a returning hero. This was the first time the actor portrayed the character. He was supposed to star in his own movie many years ago, but after roadblock after roadblock, it never materialized. Now, Channing Tatum’s dream finally comes true, and I would say that his performance stole the show (or the movie). X-23 The breakout star of the film Logan returns in Deadpool and Wolverine as one of the survivors in the Void. After the touching but tragic ending of Logan, it’s nice to see X-23 and Wolverine together again. Deadpool Corps Actors At the climax of the film, we see the Deadpool Corps. Solving Time Series Forecasting Problems: Principles and Techniques

Many people have discovered ChatGPT’s competencies in code generation. But, how well does it actually perform, and are there alternatives? In this post, I take a look at some scenarios where AI can and the degree to which it can be useful. Finally, I do my best to evaluate its performance. help with coding Intro ChatGPT has been everywhere in the last few months. Reading and hearing about how people use it and ‘force’ it to make mistakes has been fun for a week or two, but it's getting tiring. For some reason, my LinkedIn feed still has at least one "Look how ChatGPT failed"-post every day, and I don't know what people are trying to prove with that. At the same time, I am perplexed by software developers claiming that they are using ChatGPT to do their work. Statements like "This week, I didn't write a single line of code and only used ChatGPT" even made it to podcasts where people discussed which jobs AI might replace in the future. For everyone who has seriously worked as a software developer, it is evident that AI cannot replace software developers soon. Yes, ChatGPT can generate code for a given problem description, but it is not good at solving problems, which is the main task of a software engineer. AI can support specific tasks, though, and I am looking at some examples in this post. AI Pair Programming Several services implement smart code completion, also called AI pair programming. The term is quite misleading and was probably invented by someone without much experience with pair programming. While pair programming is specifically beneficial when two people work together to discuss how something should be implemented, AI [pair programming](https://Pair programming - Wikipedia  Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Pair_programming) tools instead help with the next step. As soon as you decide what to implement and where to put the code, it suggests a solution. The two most popular ones are and GitHub Copilot is based on , a model for translating natural language to code based on GPT-3. According to a paper by OpenAI researchers, the model generated working code for given Python docstrings for more than 70% of the attempts. That's quite impressive but still also emphasizes that it requires basic coding skills (i.e., writing a docstring) to retrieve good results. Like ChatGPT, CodeX can also be used for free. GitHub Copilot Tabnine. OpenAI Codex on the OpenAI website I have used Copilot for private projects for quite a while and liked it a lot. In the beginning (when it was still in technical preview), it mainly copied lines from GitHub code. Since then, it has improved and evolved a lot. Especially for code that implements generic tasks (like calculations or conversions), there is a high chance that Copilot suggests a complete function based on a doc string. For example, when you write it would suggest the complete function, including a return value. def reverse(self, x:int) -> int... Copilot also works well for writing tests. Just add the name "test" to a given function name and it does the job. In contrast, Tabnine was a massive disappointment for me, though, and felt like a dumb auto-completion suggesting mostly useless or wrong code. While Copilot uses one large model, Tabnine is based on several smaller models that solve individual problems. This is probably also why it is more convenient to use Tabnine in local mode and train it with your own code (which is not possible with Copilot). Even with a lot of context and well-named variables, the suggestions I received from Tabnine were often far from what you would expect. Using local mode, it worked well in large repositories with a lot of similar code. But this is far too easy compared to the problems I would expect such a model to solve. It was not smart but felt more like a tool for automatic copy and pasting. There might be other use cases and circumstances where Tabnine works well (for example, in huge company code bases where everything is written in a similar style and language) but as someone who is working on many smaller projects, it just didn't work for me. Asking AI to write Code As mentioned in the intro, one of the primary use cases of ChatGPT seems to be code generation. Of course, that was already possible with CodeX, but the boom of ChatGPT made many more people aware of what is possible. Compared to the plugins mentioned before, this approach aims to translate textual problem descriptions into code instead of being integrated into an existing code base. Doing this task is challenging for a model as it involves understanding a problem and generating suitable, functional code that solves this problem. In the past, many models failed to do the former reliably, and even with more specialized models, it still is a considerable challenge that is not solved by ChatGPT. However, let's have a look at the code ChatGPT generates. Unfortunately, it didn't tell me I also have to install , but as I asked for a Streamlit app, it's OK to assume I know how to install libraries. plotly Nevertheless, there are two issues: The temperature value is not parsed correctly. It is saved as a dictionary and accessing it with will throw an error. A quick and easy fix would be to replace this with . I assume that's a good example of how the model has learned a lot of different ways how to handle the reply of the API but isn't successful in drawing a connection between parsing the data and accessing it for the chart again. y="temp.day" y=df['temp'].str['day'] The app only works if there is a valid API key and throws an error if there is none. The missing error handling is unfortunate as it displays error messages in the front end. However, it could quickly be fixed by either catching the error and displaying a more user-friendly error message (preferred) or implementing the API call so that the error is not displayed in the UI. Apart from these issues, the code looks fine and runs after fixing the first issue. Also, while the number of comments might be too ambitious in general, it's helpful to understand the generated code. To have access to a wide range of liquidity, a trader would need to open accounts with multiple trading platforms and entrust each one with their private keys. That means that the more crypto exchanges a trader operates on, the more they are prone to , as they take it on each trading venue. So such cutting the number of necessary on-chain iterations with the use of state channels allows to drastically reduce the costs and increase the speed of interactions. How blockchains will reshape the Covid-19 vaccine supply chains and how a startup backed by Bill Gates´GAVI is at the forefront of the multi-billion $ bonanza Supply chains are probably the weakest link in complex business architectures. The "just in time" inventory needs of modern consumption, the rampant consumerism, the extreme globalization and connectivity, made supply chains all too complex, fragile, and more than ever exposed to sudden shocks. Then came Covid-19 which put supply chains under considerable strain and made their weaknesses and lack of resilience all too apparent. But technology in the form of DLTs/Blockchains and IoT devices can save the day. They can dramatically improve supply chain management, make them more efficient and more resilient. Because blockchains/DLTs offer - through decentralization - a secure, transparent, incorruptible, immutable, auditable and efficient way to record digital data, they are the perfect tool for managing supply chains. Coupled with IoT - which sensors can record all sorts of external data such as speed, temperature, humidity, time, exact geo-localization, opening and closing of packaging and the breaking of seals, etc. - the data can be processed and analyzed in real-time to enable an immediate managerial response. The Challenges When looking specifically at the pharma industry, the picture is not rosy. , while companies like Walmart, Apple or Zara have "superb supply chains", pharma industry´s  supply chains are "neither flexible nor cost-effective". According to PWC More specifically, the major challenges that the Covid-19 vaccine distribution will unleash on the pharma industry, can be summarized as follows: (i) the need to use a different supply chain as with other products. Likely much wider and extended, therefore more complex and difficult to manage. Basically the need is to track down everything and everyone from medical components (i.e. suppliers of ingredients) to the final patient receiving the vaccine; (ii) the need to scale up and down deliveries based on epidemic data and demand; (iii) the need to compress delivery time and comply with cold chain constraints; (iv) the need to monitor stock inventories in real time, avoid shortages and manage timely delivery; (v) the need to collect and handle vital epidemiological data (this will be the "KYP", Know Your Patient process) and share it with a multitude of stakeholders such as the authorities, hospitals, family doctors, pharmacies, etc. This is also vital in case vaccines are defective or have side effects which require an immediate suspension of the treatment or a product recall; (vi) the need to incorporate IoT devices to prevent counterfeit and manage cold-chain constraints; (vii) the need to manage increased complexities, such as different producers and diverse types of vaccines which are not compatible with each other. Since vaccine shots will be administered at intervals, one must make sure that people get the second or third shot of the very same vaccine and not of a different one. Mistakes here can cost lives and potential liabilities could be huge. Some of the above issues are clearly not unique to the Covid-19 vaccine, but are made more pressing by its criticalities such as, for instance, counterfeit risks and the cold-chain integrity.
