How Tech Events Empower Digital Agencies

WordPress 5.0 isn’t the future, it just barely catches WordPress up to the present. WordPress 5.0 and the Gutenberg Content Editor I don’t talk to a lot of my WordPress friends anymore, and when I do, I don’t really talk WordPress with them. The politics of WordPress absolutely bum me out, and I am done fighting with Matt Mullenweg. For those of you who don’t know, I was pretty much blacklisted along with the entire city of San Francisco by WordPress.org and Automattic for reasons that no one has ever fully explained to me. I will save that for another time. I use to be very publicly active in the WordPress community, as I spent a good 5-years of my life running a WordPress startup called CyberChimps, but I got tired of fighting pointless battles. I realized that WordPress is run by Matt Mullenweg, and as much as I like him as a person, I find his business decisions often baffling. For example, releasing WordPress 5.0 right before the big WordCamp US conference starting tomorrow was absolutely silly. The release day was a travel day for most of the top people in the WordPress community. Releasing WordPress 5.0 a day before WordCamp US was simply rude to the WordPress community. So is releasing a major version of software that powers 32%+ of the Internet in the month of December during the holidays when many people are trying to focus on family. This update is going to break millions of websites, and force millions of developers to upgrade millions of websites. The number of human working hours that are going to go into supporting this update can’t even be quantified. While I believe the new version of WordPress 5.0 with the new file editor Gutenberg is absolutely necessary, how they rolled it out was unprofessional and inconsiderate. The fact of the matter is WordPress should have had these features 5+ years ago. While I see a lot of people claiming this is the future of WordPress, my perspective is it is actually just WordPress’s somewhat boring present. I haven’t seen anything innovative in WordPress 5.0 that I haven’t seen in other page builders, themes, or plugins. WordPress 5.0 and Gutenberg is kind of boring in its simplicity. Gutenberg is necessary to catch WordPress up to the present, but it does nothing to put WordPress ahead. They’re playing catch up, making up for lost time, and not moving the ball forward. If this is Matt Mullenweg’s Super Bowl moment, he’s merely lined up behind center and hasn’t thrown a pass towards the endzone yet. I’m not even sure he’s been in the redzone. I cannot help but feel like WordPress as a community missed a huge opportunity by taking the direction they took with WordPress 5.0 and Gutenberg. Did WordPress really need a new editor? Or, do we need a new WordPress? In 2018, nearly 2019, I cannot come up with a logical argument for why you even need to separate backend and frontend content editing. This is an old model and concept from a time long past when technology limited our ability to do both at the same time. If WordPress was going to make something new and exciting for 5.0, they could have created a comprehensive solution to solve the problem of: “How do I edit content?” Then come up with an integrated solution based on modern technology. Instead, we got another “safe” modular solution designed around an old concept layering new technology on top of a legacy system. It is boringly functional, and will serve as a solid foundation to keep WordPress relevant for another few years, but it isn’t enough. The backend editing experience might be fixed, but WordPress 5.0 does absolutely nothing to improve the frontend editing experience. Other web builders don’t provide multiple interfaces to edit content anymore, they just use frontend editors because there isn’t really a need for anything else. WordPress 5.0 and Gutenberg solved the wrong problem. Even though the solution they came up with is decent, it is based on an old idea of what maintaining content on the Internet is today. They would have been better off reinventing how themes, content, and plugins all work together and built something new. Instead they basically just created a new editor without solving any of the other challenges that plague WordPress. It is a bandage at best, and it is still going to break millions of websites so they might as well created something new and revolutionary. While I am glad WordPress is somewhat still relevant thanks to this update, they unfortunately solved the wrong problem in my opinion. If Matt wants to take WordPress into the future, he needs to let go of the past, and do something new. He has the team, and the money. He just needs to go do it, and stop wasting so much effort on backwards compatibility and old ways of thinking. WordPress Past For those of you who do not know, I scaled CyberChimps to 4.9 million downloads of our software, and bootstrapped the company to $1 million in revenue without an investor, then sold the company for an exit. I was one of the first major theme providers to bring drag and drop template editing and responsive design to WordPress. While I wasn’t the first company or person to do either, I was by far the most successful in terms of sheer volume of actual people who used our software compared to others. In fact, Automattic which is basically the parent company behind WordPress, had about the same number of downloads as I had at the time when I sold my company. They had to hire close to 20 people to release nearly 50 themes to match the download count I had with just a dozen themes, half the team, and 1/100 the financial resources. These days, people don’t even really associate me with my WordPress past. If anything I’m the most Internet famous for my political writing, and podcasting with Crypto Disrupted and now the . Hacker Noon Podcast Few people seem to know or care that I still actually work with WordPress. I’ve actually spent the last 3 years working on a Software as a Service automation platform for WordPress, but it is also an an application agnostic solution that works with any web app. For more info you can check out and for the WordPress demos. We will be relaunching early next year, but the latest version of our product is available for a free trial. Stratus5 WPdocker On a final note, I am glad that to develop their own publishing platform. As decent as Gutenberg is, WordPress still has legacy, security, and scalability issues. For a site of ’s size, WordPress is a poor choice, and I am looking forward to working with Hacker Noon’s new CTO to build a better next generation solution than Medium and WordPress. WordPress 5.0 hasn’t changed my mind about Hacker Noon’s situation at all, in fact it merely confirms to me that , Hacker Noon’s CEO, is on the right path. Initial Impression of WordPress 5 from a former WordPress Startup CEO

If you are reading this, you might know that Apple announced its new iPad Pro. This new iPad shows enhanced performance and capacity, making it the fastest iPad to date. Some claim this is the ultimate laptop killer, not quite. While the iPad is an absolute beast, it takes some configuration and money to be able to do some code on it. Getting the Right Apps It should come without saying, but in order to have a decent configuration, you’ll have to spend some money, as you’ll have to purchase some of these apps. Getting the right apps is all about meeting your personal criteria. The following apps are based on my own opinion based on my personal experience. Text Editors Coda ($24.99) Coda is a well-known text editor for MacOS, now available on IOS. This text editor features remote connections with FTP, SFTP, SSH, and WebDAV. It also has a built-in command prompt. While this app is super solid and offers a lot of awesome features, It does not offers mobile git management, which, Is a dealbreaker for me. Now, If you use Coda for MacOS this could be a good addition for your workflow, as it syncs with the MacOS app. Textastic ($9.99) This is my preferred text editor app at the moment. This app features a decent text editor with syntax highlighting and emmet support. It also features remote connection with FTP, SFTP, SSH, WebDAV and even Dropbox & Google Drive. The reason I prefer this app over Coda is that it integrates seamlessly with WorkingCopy (A git management app for iPad). I use this app to code on the go and I’ve had no complaints at the moment. VIM (Free) VIM is a well-known code editor. While I haven’t used this app (I’m a more visual kind of guy) I think it could be an honorable mention. It’s all up to you. Git Management Working copy (Free — $15.99 for pro version) As I mentioned before, this git management app integrates seamlessly with Textastic, which makes it a crucial tool for my iPad development workflow. The app itself is very solid, it allows you to do commits, merge, solve conflicts and really anything you do with git. You can also add repositories from GitLab, Github, Bitbucket and your own remote server. While the app itself is free, you might end up getting the paid version. The free version does not allow you to do push to remote which makes it kind of useless. The Pro version adds the following features: Push to remote, Dark mode, SSH Uploads & SSH commands, Repository Folders, and font customization. Codehub (Free — $2.99 for enterprise) Codehub is basically a Github client to see and manage your git repositories. It allows you to keep track of your repositories, comment and watch other repos. While the free version is pretty complete, it does not allow you to access private repos, for that you’ll have to buy the pro version. I personally, don’t use this app a lot but I know some people will find it useful. Command Line Terminus (Free — $6.99/montly for Pro features) Terminus is an app for MacOS, Windows & Linux, now available on IOS. The app itself offers a very simple, yet useful UI with a ton of features on the Free version. Terminus features: Termius is available for all major mobile and desktop systems. Support for SSH, Mosh, and Telnet sessions. Supports ECDSA and ed25519 keys as well as chacha20-poly1305 cipher. Pair credentials and servers for quick access. Create groups to define shared settings and themes. Tag your servers to stay organized. Terminal touch with support for CTRL, ALT, and arrow keys. Multitask with split-view support. 12 colorful themes and adjustable fonts, including Dark Mode. Make multiple connections to the same host or connect to multiple hosts. Import keys with iTunes file sharing in ext, OpenSSH, and PPK formats. Protect your credentials with PIN Background mode and termination notifications. Port forwarding and tunneling let you encrypt nearly any service or connection. Preview active SSH sessions with an adaptive user interface. Terminus is my preferred command line for the iPad because it provides a complete terminal experience out of the box. The pro features just adds ad few productivity features, such as, setting custom environment variables, syncing terminal and credentials with both desktop and mobile versions, importing your desktop’s ~/.ssh/config file via the command line and more... Prompt 2 ($15.99) Prompt 2 is from the same people that created Coda. This terminal client is a simpler alternative to Terminus. I haven’t spent a lot of time with it because I use Terminus but I thought it’s a honorable mention. Exploring Other Options While I prefer native development tools, there’s always other options we could use when developing on mobile devices. Ofcourse, you’ll need internet access but these are nice options to check out. Coder.com Coder is an online virtual development tool that uses VS Code. I’ve tried this online tool for only two days, and here’s what I found. While still in Alpha, is a very powerful tool and could be game changing. Coder.com brings you the full VS Code experience for free, at least for now. The only setback I found is, when using a bluetooth keyboard, such as magic keyboard 2, you wont be able to use the right and left arrow keys for some reason. Maybe this would be fixed in the future, but as of now is very annoying. Cloud9 This virtual playground is actually a full featured IDE based on Linux. what this means? It means that you could do everything you do on a Linux machine via the terminal, even install libraries. Codepen I use this one a lot. Codepen is the Holy grail for web developers. It is more of an online community for testing and showcasing user-created HTML, CSS and JavaScript code snippets. Glitch Glitch is almost the same concept as Codepen. Except it’s a little more “friendly”. It’s pretty powerful as well. I still like more Codepen tho. Codeanywhere Codeanywhere is a cross-platform cloud IDE. It enables users to instantly write, edit, collaborate and run web development projects from a web browser and any mobile device. Repl.it This virtual programming platform allows you to create virtual playgrounds to develop, test and even deploy applications. It also includes a pretty awesome 🔥 teaching platform feature with its own grading system. Codesandbox.io I came up with this neat resource while I was attending on the . One of the speakers used for a live coding demo and I fell in love with it. It’s another quick and reliable cloud based solution to create application prototypes on the move. 10th Miami Wordcamp Final Verdict As developers, having most of the desktop development workflow is a must, but if you are looking for a laptop replacement, you should get a surface instead. For me, the iPad is the perfect tool for a designer with development skills. At the end of the day, the iPad is just another tool to take advantage of if you own a MacBook. Putting WordPress into Hyperdrive

When we first moved from Seattle to Atlanta, it was horrible. We moved from a nice house in Bothell with a backyard, to a 2 bedroom apartment that we used one bedroom for storage stacked to the ceiling with boxes, the other bedroom had our mattress on the floor, and no furniture assembled. We had to go around our whole apartment, through a parking garage, to take our dogs out. Oh did I forget that we drove across the whole country in an suv with 2 dogs? Yes, that happened. I tried to get involved, I went to meetups, startup weekends, local conferences, and had a day job. I remember when I was at Startup Weekend, someone told me that it will take about 3 years to get used to it here. I missed Seattle terribly. I missed my comfort, my team, my commute, my… fill in the blank. Fast forward. I have met some pretty special people here, Tom McFarlin, John Saddington and Shawn Wildermuth to name a few. I have also met many people at WordCamp Atlanta, Angle Brackets in Vegas, and some others that have really inspired me. It has been 3 years now. I have changed jobs once and I am going to start teaching part-time at General Assembly. I am in charge of engineering/development for a startup here and was the director of engineering for a global software company. I like my Publix, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods. I know how to get to midtown, Decatur, and understand the OTP, ITP conversations. I have started writing more and more, and even getting recognized from time to time for some of my articles. I am a writer. I am a teacher. I am developer. I am a team-builder. None of that happened over-night. It happened over time. I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer, I just wrote. I did kind of know I wanted to teach, but teaching is a skill that needs to be honed. Just like writing, development, speaking, etc… I have run into people when I’m out that I know now. I am comfortable here in the Atlanta area, and I continue to meet more people. I know that they are not the same people I met in Seattle, or New Orleans, or… they are different. I can’t recreate what I had in New Orleans or Seattle. It is a NEW experience. That is the overnight success for me. When I realized that this is new, each day is new. We have a successful experience and we analyze the crap out of it trying to recreate that same situation, the same formula. That is not how it works. Your new venture is simply that… NEW. I have learned WAY more about my life through failures than successes. I was sad when I moved here, I feel like I lost myself, my life, my happiness. I didn’t realize until this year, that I am recreating myself. I am better than I was 3 years ago. I know more, I have learned so much, and that knowledge continues to grow. I am not an overnight success. I am persistent and patient (at times). I try things. I try things that I end up not enjoying. I stop those things. I try things that I enjoy, so I do more of that. I learn daily. It is the pursuit of knowledge, both technical and self-awareness that helps me improve. So what am I doing now? I am the Head of Engineering and I am writing React code against a .Net C# backend that we are moving to node.js. I am writing when I can and I enjoy it. I am not an overnight success. I am a collection of failures and successes, but it is the next success that keeps me going and the next failure that keeps me getting better.
