I think OpenAI is not being honest about the diminishing returns of scaling AI with data and compute alone. I think they are also putting a lot of the economy, the world and this entire industry in jeopardy by not talking more openly about the topic. At first, I believed what they told us, that all you need to do is add more compute power and more data, and LLMs as well as other models will simply get better. That this relationship between the models, their compute and data could grow linearly until the end of time. The leap from GPT-3 and GPT-3.5 was immense. The leap from GPT-3.5 to GPT-4 seemed like clear evidence that this presumption was correct. But then things got weird. Instead of releasing a model called GPT-5 or even GPT-4.5, they released GPT-4-turbo. GPT-4-turbo is not as intelligent as GPT-4 but it is much faster and it's cheaper. That all makes sense. But then, this trend kept going. After GPT-4-turbo, OpenAI's next release was GPT-4o. GPt-4o is more or less just as intelligent as GPT-4-turbo, but it is even faster and even cheaper. The functionality that really sold us, however, was its ability to talk and understand things via audio and its speed. However, take note, at this point in our story, GPT-4-turbo is not more intelligent than GPT-4 and GPT-4o is not more intelligent than GPT-4-turbo. And none of them are more intelligent than GPT-4. Their next and most recent release was GPT-o1. GPT-o1 can perform better than GPT-4 onsome tasks. But that's because o1 is not really a single model. GPT-o1 is actually a black box of multiple lightweight LLM models working together. Perhaps o1 is even better described as software or middleware than it is an actual model. You give it a question, it comes up with an answer, and then it repeatedly uses other models tasked with checking the answer to make sure it’s right, and it disguises all of these operations. It does all of this very, very quickly. Why not just make an LLM that's more powerful than GPT-4? Why resort to such cloak-and-dagger techniques to achieve new releases? GPT-4 came out 2 years ago, we should be well beyond its capabilities by now. Well, Noam Brown, a researcher at OpenAI had something to say on why they went this route with o1 at TED AI. He said “It turned out that having a bot think for just 20 seconds in a hand of poker got the same boosting performance as scaling up the model by 100,000x and training it for 100,000 times longer,” Now stop and really think about what is being said there. A bot thinking for 20 seconds is as good as a bot trained 100,000 times longer with 100,000 times more computing power.  If the scaling laws are infinite, that math is impossible. Something is either wrong here or someone is lying. Why does all of this matter? OpenAI is worth 150 billion dollars and the majority of that market cap is based on projections that depend on the improvement of models over time. If AI is only as good as it is today, that’s still an interesting future, but that’s not what’s being sold to investors by AI companies whose entire IP is their model. That also changes the product roadmap of many other companies that depend on the continued advancement of their LLMs to build their own products. OpenAI’s goal and ambitions of AGI are severely delayed if this is all true. A Hypothesis The reason LLMs are so amazing is because of a higher level philosophical phenomenon that we never considered, that language inherently possesses an extremely large amount of context and data about the world within even small sections of text. Unlike pixels in a picture or video, words in a sentence implicitly describe one another. A completely cohesive sentence is by definition, “rational”. Whether or not it’s true is a very different story and a problem that transcends language alone. No matter how much text you consume, “truth” and “falsehoods” are not simply linguistic concepts. You can say something is completely rational but in no way “true”. It is at this point LLMs will consistently hit a brick wall. Over the last 12 months, I’d like to formally speculate that behind closed doors there have been no huge leaps in LLMs at OpenAI, GrokAI, or at Google. To be specific I don’t think anyone, anywhere has made any LLM that is even 1.5X better than GPT-4. At OpenAI it seems that high-level staff are quitting. Right now they’re saying it’s because of safety but I’m going to put my tinfoil hat on now and throw an idea out there. They are aware of this issue and they’re jumping ship before it’s too late. Confirmation I started discussing this concern with friends 3 months ago. I was called many names haha. But in the last 3 weeks, a lot of the press has begun to smell something fishy: OpenAI is no longer releasing Orion (GPT-5) because it did not meet expected performance benchmarks and it is seeing diminishing returns. The tech behind o1 is proof that even low-performance models can be repurposed to do complicated operations. But that is not a solution to the problem of AI scaling. I think there needs to be substantial investment and rapid testing of new model architectures. We also have run out of data and need new ways of extrapolating usable data for LLMs to be trained on. Perhaps using multidimensional labeling that helps guide its references for truthful information directly. Another good idea could be to simply continue fine-tuning LLMs for specific use cases like math, science, and healthcare running and using AI agent workflows, similar to o1. It might give a lot of companies wiggle room until a new architecture arises. This problem is really bad but I think that the creativity in machine learning and software development it will inspire will be immense. Instead of releasing a model called GPT-5 or even GPT-4.5, they released GPT-4-turbo. GPT-4-turbo is not as intelligent as GPT-4 but it is much faster and it's cheaper. That all makes sense. But then, this trend kept going. After GPT-4-turbo, OpenAI's next release was GPT-4o. GPt-4o is more or less just as intelligent as GPT-4-turbo, but it is even faster and even cheaper. The functionality that really sold us, however, was its ability to talk and understand things via audio and its speed. However, take note, at this point in our story, GPT-4-turbo is not more intelligent than GPT-4 and GPT-4o is not more intelligent than GPT-4-turbo. And none of them are more intelligent than GPT-4. Their next and most recent release was GPT-o1. GPT-o1 can perform better than GPT-4 on some tasks. But that's because o1 is not really a single model. GPT-o1 is actually a black box of multiple lightweight LLM models working together. Perhaps o1 is even better described as software or middleware than it is an actual model. You give it a question, it comes up with an answer, and then it repeatedly uses other models tasked with checking the answer to make sure it’s right, and it disguises all of these operations. It does all of this very, very quickly. some Why not just make an LLM that's more powerful than GPT-4? Why resort to such cloak-and-dagger techniques to achieve new releases? GPT-4 came out 2 years ago, we should be well beyond its capabilities by now. Well, Noam Brown, a researcher at OpenAI had something to say on why they went this route with o1 at TED AI. He said “It turned out that having a bot think for just 20 seconds in a hand of poker got the same boosting performance as scaling up the model by 100,000x and training it for 100,000 times longer,” Now stop and really think about what is being said there. A bot thinking for 20 seconds is as good as a bot trained 100,000 times longer with 100,000 times more computing power.  If the scaling laws are infinite, that math is impossible. Something is either wrong here or someone is lying. Why does all of this matter? OpenAI is worth 150 billion dollars and the majority of that market cap is based on projections that depend on the improvement of models over time. If AI is only as good as it is today, that’s still an interesting future, but that’s not what’s being sold to investors by AI companies whose entire IP is their model. That also changes the product roadmap of many other companies that depend on the continued advancement of their LLMs to build their own products. OpenAI’s goal and ambitions of AGI are severely delayed if this is all true. A Hypothesis The reason LLMs are so amazing is because of a higher level philosophical phenomenon that we never considered, that language inherently possesses an extremely large amount of context and data about the world within even small sections of text. Unlike pixels in a picture or video, words in a sentence implicitly describe one another. A completely cohesive sentence is by definition, “rational”. Whether or not it’s true is a very different story and a problem that transcends language alone. No matter how much text you consume, “truth” and “falsehoods” are not simply linguistic concepts. You can say something is completely rational but in no way “true”. It is at this point LLMs will consistently hit a brick wall. Over the last 12 months, I’d like to formally speculate that behind closed doors there have been no huge leaps in LLMs at OpenAI, GrokAI, or at Google. To be specific I don’t think anyone, anywhere has made any LLM that is even 1.5X better than GPT-4. At OpenAI it seems that high-level staff are quitting. Right now they’re saying it’s because of safety but I’m going to put my tinfoil hat on now and throw an idea out there. They are aware of this issue and they’re jumping ship before it’s too late. It’s hard to recommend a single solution. The tech behind o1 is proof that even low-performance models can be repurposed to do complicated operations. But that is not a solution to the problem of AI scaling. I think there needs to be substantial investment and rapid testing of new model architectures. We also have run out of data and need new ways of extrapolating usable data for LLMs to be trained on. Perhaps using multidimensional labeling that helps guide its references for truthful information directly. Another good idea could be to simply continue fine-tuning LLMs for specific use cases like math, science, and healthcare running and using AI agent workflows, similar to o1. It might give a lot of companies wiggle room until a new architecture arises. This problem is really bad but I think that the creativity in machine learning and software development it will inspire will be immense. Once we get over this hurdle, we’ll certainly be well on schedule for AGI and perhaps ASI. software development

A few weekends ago, I had lunch with some friends. We were having our quarterly life catch-up just discussing what we had been up to and how our lives were going. It was the usual stuff; Work, fitness, holidays and the latest albums by some of our favourite musicians. I don’t remember how it happened, but the conversation switched to relationships, and I knew exactly where it was going to end. You see, two of my non-tech friends dated people in tech and had bad experiences, so every once in a while, they liked to make fun of ‘my people’. Nothing serious to be honest, just the kind of banter that is expected with friends. Their ‘theory’ is that a lot of tech people are “Introverted, nerds who think too logically about everything and may not be in-tune with their emotional side” To be honest, I don’t know if all that is true. What I do know is that I don’t want to be at the end of their jokes at our next catch up so I’ve decided to do something about it. I’ve decided to write a guide to romantic relationships for tech people in a language that they understand. Think of this as an API documentation or user guide for romantic relationships. 1. Never assume, Ask. If you’ve launched software products I’m sure you understand that users don’t always behave how you expect them to. It’s quite common, and a popular example is how Instagram started as Burbn, a location photo and note-sharing app but it turned out that people only wanted to use the photo-sharing features. That is what became Instagram. Well, the same thing happens in relationships. You can’t always assume that you know what your partner wants and needs. You can make informed assumptions, but when in doubt, ask. You’ll be surprised what you might learn about someone that you thought you knew everything about. 2. ‘Listen’ to what your users do, not what they say. This sounds like a counter to the previous point but it’s not. If you have ever done user interviews, you know that sometimes users just say what they think you want to hear, other times they don’t even know what they want. In those scenarios, you need to observe their actions to see what they actually do rather than just listening to what they say. It can be the same with relationships. Sometimes you need to see what your partner actually does to understand what they really mean and what they want. They may not say certain things because they don’t want to hurt your feelings or because they are unsure how to explain them. This is why it’s important to observe their actions instead. 3. Communicate clearly, always. Clear communication is very important in all aspects of life, from nurturing relationships to building software. Take payment/bank apps for example. Which apps do you prefer? The ones that send you an email/notification when there’s a known issue with processing payments or the ones that don’t say anything and wait till you try to make a payment and your money is lost in oblivion? It’s the same with relationships. Try as much as you can to communicate your plans, intentions and challenges (if any). It helps to build trust and assures your partner that you will always let them know if anything is wrong. 4. Never forget delighters. Product delighters are those small things in a software product that are there mostly to excite users. They don’t necessarily have any real functional value but they excite or make customers happy. A good example is that when you open up the Chrome browser while offline, the dinosaur in the error message turns into a game when you tap the space bar. The Chrome team didn’t have to add that, but they did and it delights users. It’s the same in relationships. Never forget the little things. A handwritten ‘thank you’ note, restocking their fridge with their favourite snack. These are really small things and you don’t have to do them, but it goes a long way when you do. 5. Keep iterating. When you launch an app what happens next? Do you just launch and then abandon the app? No!!! You fix bugs and think of what features to build next! If you agree with this then why would you treat relationships differently? Why would you stop doing the things that your partner liked so much when you first met? Are you fixing your behavioural bugs/issues? Are you thinking of ways to be a better partner? Are you still putting in effort to stay fit and dress well? Are you willing to iterate and keep improving as a person, as a partner? These are important questions to ask yourself. To be honest, I didn’t write this because I’m a love guru or anything like that. I wrote this because I think there are parallels between tech and relationships and they can be a game changer for any tech person who wants to improve in this aspect of their lives. I was trapped in my parents' store, surrounded by boxes, shelves, and countless products awaiting inventory. My job? Take photos of products, upload them to the website, and write descriptions that somehow convinced people to buy yet another brand of phone case or random kitchen gadget. It was tedious work—the same routine over and over. I felt like a robot, except the real robots weren’t around to help. Between balancing schoolwork and the constant cycle of restocking and updating the online store, I was burnt out. The worst part wasn’t even restocking itself; it was the endless product uploads and descriptions. By Saturday afternoon, after hours of taking and editing product images, I couldn’t tell the difference between a toaster and a blender. Describing them? Even worse. I finally decided there had to be a better way. I remembered reading about AI tools that could do things like generate text and images. That’s when I found Coze.com—a no-code platform that allows anyone to create an AI chatbot using natural language to prompt its system. It was like a light bulb flickered in my head. What if I could build a chatbot to handle all the boring stuff? This could help me save time I spent taking product images, manually researching, and tying in product details into our website. Begin prompting. Prompts When customers ask or search for an item on our website, they expect to see a detailed description of it. They want to have information on what they are buying, its quality, specifications, and what makes it stand out. To provide this, I have to instruct the system on the input data it should get, and output information it should return, and in what structure. To do this, I utilize the prompt feature. A prompt is a natural language instruction that tells an AI system what to do, and Coze uses this to make it easy for anyone to describe what they intend to build. These instructions are entered into the system under personas and prompts. In my case, I wanted my bot to take the name of a product and provide me with a detailed description and specifications of it. I noticed there are two types of prompting while building. Agent prompt, which tells the chatbot what to build, how to build it, and results to return to users. End user prompt, which queries the built chatbot to return desired results Coze allows for the optimization of initially written prompts so it can return the best results in a well-structured manner, including a well-detailed skill set my chatbot should have. Plugins As the saying goes, pictures speak louder than words, and what better way to reinforce the item specifications than giving customers an image of the item they searched for and intend to buy? They don’t just get to read about what the products are made of or can do but get a visual representation of every detail. To add this level of detail to my chatbot, plugins came into play. Plugins are what make most Coze bots run faster and more effectively, delivering the best results, much like how my parent’s store utilizes the services of established delivery companies to send out paid items to customers. They are additional software components that extend the functionality of an application. Plugins provide specialized features and capabilities that the base application, in this case, my AI chatbot, does not have. To enhance my chatbot, I made use of two plugins: Stable Diffusion and Gemini AI. Gemini AI provided my chatbot with information on inputted product items. It takes the name of the product from the user prompt, searches through its large knowledge base, and returns a response. A stable diffusion plugin makes it easy to generate high-quality product images. Database Much like how we have a warehouse for storage and retrieval of items. I needed to be able to store the product information generated for easy reference and retrieval instead of having to prompt the system every time I needed the same information. Databases are used to store information to be retrieved at a later time. For my chatbot, I created a database by specifying the table name, name of fields, type of data to be collected, and if it required information. Since Coze is a no-code tool, I can easily type in this field name, and it would be created as an SQL database. To record data in the database, I simply specified a new skill in the prompt and persona section, referencing the database table name and its fields. Also, I enabled a file box that, in Coze, holds large files, such as images, to store the product images. This would come in handy when I needed to download the images to use on my parent’s online store. Check out Skill 3 in the image below. Outcome In the preview panel, I tested my newly created chatbot and got the following results as shown in the image below. My chatbot generated a response when queried with a product name and image and stored the result in its database for easy retrieval when needed or the chat has been cleared.
