THE LAST NUMBER OF OUR MAGAZINE EDITORIAL It is with heartfelt regret that we take up our pen to announce that this will be the last number of Our Magazine. We have edited ten numbers of it and it has been successful beyond our expectations. It has to be discontinued by reason of circumstances over which we have no control and not because we have lost interest in it. Everybody has done his or her best for Our Magazine. Prince Edward Island expected everyone to do his and her duty and everyone did it. Mr. Dan King conducted the etiquette department in a way worthy of the Family Guide itself. He is especially entitled to commendation because he laboured under the disadvantage of having to furnish most of the questions as well as the answers. Miss Felicity King has edited our helpful household department very ably, and Miss Cecily King’s fashion notes were always up to date. The personal column was well looked after by Miss Sara Stanley and the story page has been a marked success under the able management of Mr. Peter Craig, to whose original story in this issue, “The Battle of the Partridge Eggs,” we would call especial attention. The Exciting Adventure series has also been very popular. And now, in closing, we bid farewell to our staff and thank them one and all for their help and co-operation in the past year. We have enjoyed our work and we trust that they have too. We wish them all happiness and success in years to come, and we hope that the recollection of Our Magazine will not be held least dear among the memories of their childhood. (SOBS FROM THE GIRLS): “INDEED IT WON’T!” OBITUARY On October eighteenth, Patrick Grayfur departed for that bourne whence no traveller returns. He was only a cat, but he had been our faithful friend for a long time and we aren’t ashamed to be sorry for him. There are lots of people who are not as friendly and gentlemanly as Paddy was, and he was a great mouser. We buried all that was mortal of poor Pat in the orchard and we are never going to forget him. We have resolved that whenever the date of his death comes round we’ll bow our heads and pronounce his name at the hour of his funeral. If we are anywhere where we can’t say the name out loud we’ll whisper it. “Farewell, dearest Paddy, in all the years that are to be We’ll cherish your memory faithfully." MY MOST EXCITING ADVENTURE My most exciting adventure was the day I fell off Uncle Roger’s loft two years ago. I wasn’t excited until it was all over because I hadn’t time to be. The Story Girl and I were looking for eggs in the loft. It was filled with wheat straw nearly to the roof and it was an awful distance from us to the floor. And wheat straw is so slippery. I made a little spring and the straw slipped from under my feet and there I was going head first down from the loft. It seemed to me I was an awful long time falling, but the Story Girl says I couldn’t have been more than three seconds. But I know that I thought five thoughts and there seemed to be quite a long time between them. The first thing I thought was, what has happened, because I really didn’t know at first, it was so sudden. Then after a spell I thought the answer, I am falling off the loft. And then I thought, what will happen to me when I strike the floor, and after another little spell I thought, I’ll be killed. And then I thought, well, I don’t care. I really wasn’t a bit frightened. I just was quite willing to be killed. If there hadn’t been a big pile of chaff on the barn floor these words would never have been written. But there was and I fell on it and wasn’t a bit hurt, only my hair and mouth and eyes and ears got all full of chaff. The strange part is that I wasn’t a bit frightened when I thought I was going to be killed, but after all the danger was over I was awfully frightened and trembled so the Story Girl had to help me into the house. FELICITY KING. THE BATTLE OF THE PARTRIDGE EGGS Once upon a time there lived about half a mile from a forrest a farmer and his wife and his sons and daughters and a granddaughter. The farmer and his wife loved this little girl very much but she caused them great trouble by running away into the woods and they often spent haf days looking for her. One day she wondered further into the forrest than usual and she begun to be hungry. Then night closed in. She asked a fox where she could get something to eat. The fox told her he knew where there was a partridges nest and a bluejays nest full of eggs. So he led her to the nests and she took five eggs out of each. When the birds came home they missed the eggs and flew into a rage. The bluejay put on his topcoat and was going to the partridge for law when he met the partridge coming to him. They lit up a fire and commenced sining their deeds when they heard a tremendous howl close behind them. They jumped up and put out the fire and were immejutly attacked by five great wolves. The next day the little girl was rambelling through the woods when they saw her and took her prisoner. After she had confessed that she had stole the eggs they told her to raise an army. They would have to fight over the nests of eggs and whoever one would have the eggs. So the partridge raised a great army of all kinds of birds except robins and the little girl got all the robins and foxes and bees and wasps. And best of all the little girl had a gun and plenty of ammunishun. The leader of her army was a wolf. The result of the battle was that all the birds were killed except the partridge and the bluejay and they were taken prisoner and starved to death. The little girl was then taken prisoner by a witch and cast into a dunjun full of snakes where she died from their bites and people who went through the forrest after that were taken prisoner by her ghost and cast into the same dunjun where they died. About a year after the wood turned into a gold castle and one morning everything had vanished except a piece of a tree. PETER CRAIG. (DAN, WITH A WHISTLE:—“Well, I guess nobody can say Peter can’t write fiction after THAT.” SARA RAY, WIPING AWAY HER TEARS:—“It’s a very interesting story, but it ends SO sadly.” FELIX:—“What made you call it The Battle of the Partridge Eggs when the bluejay had just as much to do with it?” PETER, SHORTLY:—“Because it sounded better that way.” FELICITY:—“Did she eat the eggs raw?” SARA RAY:—“Poor little thing, I suppose if you’re starving you can’t be very particular.” CECILY, SIGHING:—“I wish you’d let her go home safe, Peter, and not put her to such a cruel death.” BEVERLEY:—“I don’t quite understand where the little girl got her gun and ammunition.” PETER, SUSPECTING THAT HE IS BEING MADE FUN OF:—“If you could write a better story, why didn’t you? I give you the chance.” THE STORY GIRL, WITH A PRETERNATURALLY SOLEMN FACE:—“You shouldn’t criticize Peter’s story like that. It’s a fairy tale, you know, and anything can happen in a fairy tale.” FELICITY:—“There isn’t a word about fairies in it!” CECILY:—“Besides, fairy tales always end nicely and this doesn’t.” PETER, SULKILY:—“I wanted to punish her for running away from home.” DAN:—“Well, I guess you did it all right.” CECILY:—“Oh, well, it was very interesting, and that is all that is really necessary in a story.” ) PERSONALS Mr. Blair Stanley is visiting friends and relatives in Carlisle. He intends returning to Europe shortly. His daughter, Miss Sara, will accompany him. Mr. Alan King is expected home from South America next month. His sons will return with him to Toronto. Beverley and Felix have made hosts of friends during their stay in Carlisle and will be much missed in social circles. The Mission Band of Carlisle Presbyterian Church completed their missionary quilt last week. Miss Cecily King collected the largest sum on her square. Congratulations, Cecily. Mr. Peter Craig will be residing in Markdale after October and will attend school there this winter. Peter is a good fellow and we all wish him success and prosperity. Apple picking is almost ended. There was an unusually heavy crop this year. Potatoes, not so good. HOUSEHOLD DEPARTMENT Apple pies are the order of the day. Eggs are a very good price now. Uncle Roger says it isn’t fair to have to pay as much for a dozen little eggs as a dozen big ones, but they go just as far. FELICITY KING. ETIQUETTE DEPARTMENT F-l-t-y. Is it considered good form to eat peppermints in church? Ans.; No, not if a witch gives them to you. No, F-l-x, we would not call Treasure Island or the Pilgrim’s Progress dime novels. Yes, P-t-r, when you call on a young lady and her mother offers you a slice of bread and jam it is quite polite for you to accept it. DAN KING. FASHION NOTES Necklaces of roseberries are very much worn now. It is considered smart to wear your school hat tilted over your left eye. Bangs are coming in. Em Frewen has them. She went to Summerside for a visit and came back with them. All the girls in school are going to bang their hair as soon as their mothers will let them. But I do not intend to bang mine. CECILY KING. Hacker Noon Awards: #Noonies 2019—Full Nominees List

I think that RPC protocols and protocols live on very different abstraction levels and should not be compared like alternatives. This is maybe the main problem I have with the current wave of REST criticism. If we just accept that no one will be happy to force an RPC kind of through REST, a domain specific API that was made for resource synchronization, the discussion could be more productive. REST API As programming languages use functions and RPC is a way to use those through a network of some kind, of course RPC APIs are the most generic and transparent way to achieve this. We now have amazing technology like gRPC, websockets, Cap’nProto, ProtocolBuffers, MessagePack and similar for this and HTTP is maybe a good fallback transport layer for legacy support but in principle these don’t need anything from the HTTP layer but are far better to be put through pure websockets or pure UDP/TCP. Best is to look at two extremes and then at how real world mixed use cases can be modeled best:- Pure RPC APIs: everything that fits to things like message passing, very dynamic and multi dimensional queries, requesting view models, triggering events, remote algorithm execution, sending mutations. These things are just best implemented using the RPC technology I mention above. These concepts are often not even connected to the concept of a ‘Resource’, so it will run into all the REST problems we read about. - Pure Resource APIs: Any protocol that should synchronize or publish consistent state and state changes on resources and needs access to the full resource for consistency while abstracting implementation details as much as possible, is best modeled in REST. Pay attention to how relatively narrow this application is compared to the description above. Still, this applies to A LOT of systems, as long as the concept of a resource makes sense in the logic of that system: For the logic of REST I find the following definition most practical: A resource is an entity that makes sense to be theoretically exposed as a unix file and whose state at a certain time makes sense to be validated by a simple hash function. This analogy is also interesting because it mirrors the development of plan9 (everything is really a file/everything should have a REST interface) being transformed into a more real world linux world (there are many file like APIs, but also d-bus etc. / there will be many REST APIs where it makes sense but also many RPC protocols) Notice how every REST API can relatively easily be modelled in a RPC style API (though probably reinventing the weel) but not the other way around. There are also two important technologies to have in mind when thinking about the real application of REST APIs, even if you use completely different technology in reality, but the purity of those technology implementations and the fact there are real Resources to check your thoughts against is an extreme help: couchDB and webDAV — does this api make in theory sense to be exposed as a webDAV server? How ridiculous would this api look when mounted in the file explorer? The more ridiculous the interaction with this API would be the less likely REST is a good model for your api. The more nerdy/nice use cases you find that would make such an interface awesome, the better it is suited for REST. — if you know couchDB better than webDAV this works the same, how much would it make sense to model this API as a couchdb database with documents and revisions for versions of documents? Real world APIs have mostly always both aspects. The key is finding the natural main idea of the API and indentifying and solving the other side of the coin as edge cases.- If your API is mainly RPC style but you have a stronger need to act on resources, this is where graphQL comes in, this is also why I think graphQL makes most sense via web socket and I don’t think of it as an alternative to REST but as a tool belt to empower RPC APIs with stronger data needs.- If your API is huge and can be split into domains that fit best to both worlds it makes sometimes sense to have two cleanly modeled separate APIs. This seems strange at first but this is exactly what happens if Web apps have a REST API but also use websockets for certain features.- If your API is mainly a perfect REST fit but has some RPC aspects then of course its still OK to model RPCs as REST but be clear what those endpoints are and be ready to replace them if you run into the known problems, just knowing consciously about this already helps a lot.

REST is just not for RPC

Scrum, backlog management, refinement, you probably already know all about these methods, but what makes someone a really good Product Manager? On a side note: the scrum manual originally uses the term Product Owner, but many companies use the term Product Manager as they fill this position with a broader role that includes stakeholder management. There are many type of Product Managers. In my years as product manager and coach I’ve met many different and wonderful people in this role, with various backgrounds ranging from UX design to HR. As the market matures, scrum and in-house development have become the standard, and most companies have started to look more critically at the skill set required for Product Management positions. The perfect time to reflect on what makes a good product manager. Basic product manager skills As a Product Manager you are the one your team look to, to know what to do. You spend a big part of the day talking to people, getting data insights, and brainstorming ideas with others. While the scrum master of a team is responsible for the team effectiveness, you are responsible for the team working on the right things to reach your goals. Helping the team focus and preparing stories ahead of the sprint to make sure the team’s valuable time isn’t wasted. As a Product Manager you need to: Understand the digital business thoroughly. What are the business model dynamics and how do conversion, marketing costs, ROI and Life Time Value relate to each other? Only then you can create product solutions that truly impact your users and the business. Able to prioritize based on knowledge of the user and business. Which problems and opportunities will have the most impact. Be smart with stakeholder management. While this can be the most frustrating part of the Product Manager role, the bigger the company the more time you need to spend to make clear to every department why your team is prioritizing some things above others. You need to take their input into account when creating a solution, and overall spend enough time communicating with your stakeholders. Being good in explaining and argumenting your decisions can help a lot. Find the right balance between these different elements of your role. You might be working on the most effective product solution, but if you forget to spend time on stakeholder management you can still get in trouble. Advanced product manager skills To become a really good Product Manager that can make a difference for your startup or company, you need to go beyond these basics and really excel at the value you add to your team. In my experience to really excel at being a Product Manager you need to: Become a multi-skilled Product Manager When you have experience with more relevant fields than just Product Management it helps your effectiveness to great extent. It enables you to understand problems better and to create better solutions. I initially started out as an e-commerce and online marketing specialist, which nowadays gives me so many benefits when working on stories. Every story our team touches already has from the get go a high level of conversion optimization and SEO in mind. Whereas a team with a single-skilled Product Manager would have to involve an external expert, and probably wouldn’t do this during the first couple versions of the product. Another benefit is to reduce complexity. Every additional team member exponentially increases communication complexity. In my experience the most effective scrum teams have many multidisciplinary members and exist of maximum 5 people. My suggestion to anyone looking to become a Product Manager would be to start somewhere in a related digital specialist role (e.g. online marketeer, UXer, data analyst) and work your way towards Product Management. This will give you a much stronger knowledge base to build your Product skills upon. One extremely useful skill to have as Product Manager is being able to work with Excel and SQL. This is easy to self-learn with online tutorials to collect data yourself to form hypotheses on how to improve the product. Instead of waiting for the Business Intelligence team to have time for you. Before I started my first Product Manager job at a scale-up with enough data to analyse, I actually bought a book on SQL to learn the basics. Set a clear product vision together with your UX designer Creating and communicating a clear product vision is very important for your team and even for your stakeholders. You team needs to be able to answer: “How does this first MVP version relate to our future product vision, and do I need to take this future vision into account when making architecture decisions during development so that we don’t waste too much time while working incrementally?”. This balance between short incremental improvements and long term vision and scalability is very important and one of the most tricky things to get right as a Product Manager. Work together with your UX designer to create a tangible epic product vision. Use this visualized vision to communicate with your team what the goals and problems to solve are, where the product is headed, and brainstorm together the best MVP approach to launch a first version. This will help to get a lot of buy-in and dedication from the team because they know what the goals are and what they are working towards. Allowing them to make good development decisions. The bigger your company is the more scrum teams you have to coordinate projects across. Your project might touch parts they are working on. This is why it is so important to communicate your product vision across scrum teams and stakeholders and to get them to buy into your product vision and support it if necessary. Even if you feel you are repeating yourself, keep communicating your vision, because you probably underestimate the need of repetition and time it takes to get understanding. One interesting book on these group dynamics is the book Sapiens. Which describes how in a large group of people the importance of storytelling and myths increase to get the group to move into the same direction. Be flexible and have technical understanding While a Product Manager doesn’t need to know how to code, it is a valuable skill to understand system processes and general technical terms. Aka it helps a lot to be a nerd. Especially during a sprint, no matter how well you have prepared a story and created tasks with the team, often developers will find unexpected technical challenges when really touching the code. A team that works together well communicates these discoveries with the Product Manager, and if they are well aware of the goals of the story, they present different options. Sometimes a different technical approach can save half the time while still reaching 95% of your goal. This is why you need to learn how to talk with your team and apply mid-sprint flexibility to adjust the technical approach and still reach your goals within a sprint. Become a real leader To grow a great team you need to be a real leader for your team. Even if you aren’t the manager of your team members (usually the CTO or Head of UX is). You still can play a big role in their development as an individual and as a team. My favourite leadership quote of all time is from The Wire: “Couple weeks from now, you’re gonna be in some district somewhere with 11 or 12 uniforms looking to you for everything. And some of them are gonna be good police. Some of them are gonna be young and stupid. A few are gonna be pieces of shit. But all of them will take their cue from you. You show loyalty, they learn loyalty. You show them it’s about the work, it’ll be about the work. You show them some other kinda game, then that’s the game they’ll play. I came on in the Eastern, and there was a piece-of-shit lieutenant hoping to be a captain, piece-of-shit sergeants hoping to be lieutenants. Pretty soon we had piece-of-shit patrolmen trying to figure the job for themselves. And some of what happens then is hard as hell to live down. Comes a day you’re gonna have to decide whether it’s about you or about the work.” — The Wire I had the luck of working for some great leaders during my career. I want to offer the same approach to my team. Transparency and openness are key to trust within the team. I always transparently share business insights. Even if they are about budget cuts, they will hear it from me first. There are no secrets within our team. Lead by example and don’t be afraid to say when certain behaviour isn’t ok. Show your team how you want to communicate with them, and they will communicate that way with you. How to become a better Product Manager

A while ago I decided as a hobby project to improve the User Experience of PSprices.com. I love their price monitoring website, but the UX is quite a mess. I tried to keep the design and branding unchanged, and only focused on improving the UX. Normally I would never make changes to a website withouth analysing the existing usage data. In this case I had to make some assumptions, since I’m not involved with the website. Before and after My main focus was to help the users reach their goal: Buying the game now when the price is low, or buying it later when the price drops more. By reducing unnecessary info and improving the flow through the page I created a UX design that is very likely to perform better in reaching the user’s goals (and the business goals of the website). In the next sections I’ll go into the details and reasoning behind each of the UX and conversion improvements. Improving the flow & focusing on the most common use-case First thing a user must do to get the correct price is selecting his country. Following the , I moved this button to the top left corner, catching the attention before reading the rest of the content. As a user myself I often experienced looking at the wrong price data, because the default country setting wasn’t mine. Gutenberg rule The second action a user must take to get correct info, is to select the platform of the game. Here I created more focus by removing older generation consoles and placing them under ‘Other’. My assumption is that less than 5% of the users is still buying games for those old platforms and they form unnecessary distractions. The price information used to be scattered all over the page. Now everything comes together in one area, with one font size, making scanning of the core info much easier. I used icons to further guide the user attention to the important info. I also made the call to prioritize PS+ prices above normal prices, assuming that 75% of the Playstation users visiting this website have a PS+ account that gives them access to these lower prices. Making the website focused on the most common use-case will reduce friction for the biggest group of users. The search bar was removed, on this results detail page. Instead it will be more prominent on the page before reaching this one. To have search quickly accessible on every page I would still consider adding it as a smaller field in the top menu bar. Improving conversion with proven best practices Reduced the multitude of buttons to focus on one primary Call To Action button that grabs the user’s attention. Making the ‘buy now’ button solid and giving it a high contrasting color, improves the conversion. The secondary Call To Action button allows user to signup for price notifications. By allowing users to directly input their email and press submit, an additional step is removed to increase the usage of this feature. Removed unnecessary features that were distracting from the main user goals. The ‘nr of other people watching this price’, and ‘people that own this game’ do not directly contribute to the main goals. Although AB-testing in the future could be used to see if activity numbers from other users on the platform can increase the trust and as a result conversion. Changed the ‘login‘;’ and ‘signup’ copywriting to ‘my account’ and ‘add to my whishlist’ to communicate better the benefits of creating an account. Improved SEO by adding the platform name and word ‘price’ to the H1 title of the page. Making these longtail game detail pages better findable on common search queries. For example: ‘Grand turismo ps4 price’. In the end UX is all about making clear decisions. Understanding user’s goals, keeping things simple and structured, and following best practises can help to increase conversion a lot.
