The Velo Writing Contest: Round 1 Results Announced!

Nowadays, as a webdeveloper, you rarely build anything from scratch: your daily job mostly consists of integrating various Javascript libraries together. If you are building a web app you are most likely going to use some framework like React, Vue or Angular for your front-end. To transmit and manage the data you will be using Redux or GraphQL. For the backend, there will be Express and probably Loopback. Then you need to cover everything with tests, so Jest, Mocha or Jasmine must be present too. Finally, there will be UI frameworks like Bootstrap and maybe some charting tools. I have already counted at least 7 core libraries and all of these are in a single project! And what about underlying technologies like Javascript itself, Node.js and, probably, Typescript? Well, that’s a lot! So how do you learn all of these tools? Of course there is a such thing as a documentation. Why documentation is important? There are two ways you can relate to documentation: you can either write or read one. Sometimes you are on both sides, but in most cases you are consuming a creation of other developers. You would not use any of the mentioned libraries, unless they were well documented, would you? Which brings us to the first point: People will not even consider your project unless it is well-documented This may seem obvious but, if your code is not documented, then the only way to learn what it does is to reverse engineer it. Would you do that yourself? Let’s consider the extreme opposite and imagine if React, for example, had no documentation. Then there would be only few geeks to try this new tool from Facebook, since it would require browsing over the source code to understand what it does and how to use it. Of course there will be no businesses or enterprises using a non-documented library. What kind of CEO or CTO would want to risk their company’s resources on a technology that has unpredictable onboarding time? Moreover, it would be hard for Facebook’s engineers themselves to support and maintain the codebase, which makes a second point: You will not be able to understand your code in 6 months I bet you know the feeling when you look at the code that you have written a few months or years ago and can not understand a single line. It is even hard to admit the code was your creation. Sounds familiar? The code may even look like it was written by someone much less experienced and may seem silly, but still you are unable to explain what is going on there. Why did you write this? At that moment an intense feeling of regret will creep in and you will start to realize the best moment to write a documentation was when you wrote the code, i.e. 6 months ago. Now, instead of reading the docs, you will have to read the code, and the code does not answer the question “why” it was written and does not explain itself. So the main purpose of documentation is to explain why you wrote this piece of software, including for yourself in the future. Documentation is a love letter that you write to your future self. – Damian Conway Documentation makes the code better You will have to think a lot about the design of your code when documenting it. Since you have to expose the whole structure of the code to the public, you will think twice about the way you built your project. Are there any parts to be refactored? Is there a way to implement some functionalities better or completely reorganize the code? So documentation process itself makes the code better. What to write? After it became clear how important documentation is, it seems that we can start creating one. However, before proceeding, I would recommend to stop for a while and do a step zero by clearly defining your target audience and understanding the value your project generates. Define your audience This one seems obvious but is often forgotten. It is better to clearly formalize who you are writing for. Who are your users? Are they mostly developers or designers? Experienced or fresh? Do they use your project in a large or small team? Etc, etc. Answering these questions will help you define an imaginary persona, which represents most of your users. Keeping this imaginary persona in mind will help you a lot, so the process of writing docs will look more like a dialog between you two. What problem your project solves The first thing to add to your document is a clear definition of what is the name of the project and what problem it solves. It is better to have one or two sentences. People are going to be visiting your page from many sources and, hence, have different perspectives. That’s why you have to be very precise and avoid vague descriptions. Simply state what your Javascript project is about, who it is for and what problem it solves. Let them launch and try your project as fast as you can. Prepare a simple short list of steps needed to setup the project and put it on top of documentation front page. Usually it may be a list of commands required to setup an environment and start the application. If it’s possible, it will be great to simply copy-paste these commands and have the entire application or library launched. Take a look at as an example: Rails Admin documentation A list of steps needed to setup the library is clear and easy to execute, which makes the whole project more attractive to use. Hopefully your users will be able to setup and launch everything, so now it is time to go a little bit deeper. Components and features documentation It is most likely that quick starting the project will not be the only option available to interact with it. There will be other parts, modules, components, features, classes, etc. You name it. E.g. pieces of your software that require separate documentation and provide an API to interact with it in some way. The first thing to do is to list all of these components and make a table of contents based on it with links following to the relevant pages. For every single piece of your documentation it is better to apply the same principle you apply to writing project description: name the component, describe what it is used for, what is the installation process, if there is one. What are the API methods and parameters, if so? Try to put yourself in a place of this imaginary persona you described earlier and imagine what would be the questions and difficulties integrating this particular component. Help them use it and leave no feature undocumented! A list of steps needed to setup the library is clear and easy to execute, which makes the whole project more attractive to use. Hopefully your users will be able to setup and launch everything, so now it is time to go a little bit deeper. is a great example of structuring docs. They are open source, so keep that in mind. Proprietary licenses vary a lot from project to project, so this can be a separate topic. If your project is open source then you are expecting people to contribute. Hence it will be very helpful for them to have some sort of guidance from you. Let them know where they can report issues, ask questions, what are the restrictions or prior assumption before contributing, where they can find issues, etc. Otherwise you are about to lose a great amount of thankful supporters and maintainers. Tips on writing documentation We will not be able to predict all the use cases and the way users will use your documentation. In general it is a great principle to keep imagining yourself as your user and organize everything based on this point of view. However, here is a short list of general tips every project documentation must follow: People will simply copy and paste your code. Keep this in mind and make sure to double check this yourself by executing it. Avoid placing some invisible characters to code examples. Creating Beautiful Documentation Website For Your JavaScript Project

In this post, I want to show how you can build the front and back end of a website using NodeJS for the back end. We’ll use node to create endpoints, and set up a database in JSON format. Then, we’ll create a front end application using React that will post to the database, and also fetch data from it. For this example, I’ll be making a guestbook, where users can submit their names and leave messages. Because users won’t need to log in, or retrieve any data, I won’t need to store anything in a session. Here’s the way this will likely work: Basically, we will have this all one one page, with a form for submitting a message, alongside the actual guestbook. To make this work we’’ll start by creating the endpoints for our POST and GET requests. We’ll set up our database, deploy it, so that we can create a React app, and pull data from the online API. Here’s the order in which I like to do things. You may prefer to work differently. This process makes sense to me, because each step builds on the step before it. During this tutorial, I’ll go through each step in more detail. If everything is working, it should allow you to appropriately read and write to the database. Once everything is working, it’s time to set up our account on Heroku and Mlab. STEP 5- Sign up for a Heroku account . And create an mLab account . here here STEP 6 - After creating your mLab account, click on the Create New button and select a Single node sandbox. There are paid options as well, but the sandbox has plenty of space for getting started. Give your database a name. Since my local database is signatures, I’m using the same name for my mLab database. Now that you have your database created, you can start a new collection from here. You will also need to add a User or Users who can access your database. Without doing this step, and adding yourself as a User with access, authentication will always fail when you try to deploy it. Now your database is running on mLab. When you click on the database, you should see some information at the top, telling you how to integrate the connection. It should look something like this: mongodb://<dbuser>:<dbpassword> 9234.mlab.com:9234/signatures @ds7 The actual url of the database will just have the username and password replaced with your username and password. Now let’s head back to our text editor. We currently have the database running locally at this location: const url = 'mongodb://localhost:27017/signatures'; To change it, so that we are connected to mLab, simply update the url variable with the information from mLab. It should look something like this: const url = 'mongodb://username:password@ds79234.mlab.com:9234/signatures'; However, you’ll likely be putting this on github, or another public place. You don’t want your mlab username and password in a public sphere where anyone can see it. To fix that, we’ll set an environment variable on the command line, and then update our url variable one more time in the text editor. On the command line, use this command: export MONGOLAB_URI="mongodb://username:password@ds79234.mlab.com:9234/signatures'; Of course, replacing it with your own username, password, numbers and database name. Now, back in our text editor, we will change our url variable to the following: const url = process.env.MONGOLAB_URI; We’ll also want to change our app.listen to reflect the new port. It could look like this: app.listen(process.env.PORT || 3000);console.log('starting applicaiton.  Good job!'); This way, it will try to run from mongolab, but if it can’t make the connection, it will still listen on port 3000 by default. This will also allow you to run the app locally or from mlab, in case you want to test changes on the local version. The final step in making the connection is deploying your code to your Heroku App. to do this, you can use the following code from the command line: heroku config:set MONGOLAB_URI=mongodb://username:password@ds79234.mlab.com:9234/signatures Your app should be successfully deployed on heroku, and you can open it from there now. If you are getting errors, double check to make sure it’s running locally. If so, then it’s probably an error along the way in the connection. In these last two steps, there’s quite a bit of repetitive code. I’m going to outline the high level code here. STEP 7 - Use ‘create-react-app’ from the command line to create a new react app. STEP 8 - Now, we’ll want to create a form, to allow for user input. Here’s how we do that. Although you won't build a Clubhouse for Gen Z (no offense), Wix is still great for constructing the go-to website we use every day. Any guesses? Job boards. Those have experienced a swell in demand due to the current pandemic. Here are some latest reports about the current job market in the US, Canada, and Europe. For sure, you might get other results by making tweaks like replacing colors and logos. But I'm trying to get as close as possible to the original.  But you can still make some amendments with Wix. Just a few clicks required. So let's upload some icons first. Here's the header menu. Now let's get some help from Wix Apps. Wasn't much helpful, so I'll make it from scratch. Building Container Box Here you're - the first box is ready. Yep, it wasn't a breeze, but it was worth it. You see - virtually anything can be done in this builder. I'm adding a sign-up here. But we won't add logic into it since my goal is to make a just visual clone of Monster. It's very easy to do a subscribe form as well. But we'll change it into a job search form. I've moved the final version to the footer. Notification bar by using onClose event - we'll hide it Then, I'll make a hero unit block. Now, let's make it even cooler. I think you'd agree that image adds like 5x beauty to this block. Just copypasting labels and the large part of website style is complete. Then, I'm adding a button. This section looks really shiny with a video player. I also combined both a new video and cover image for the VideoBox element from Velo. Some more videos. After then, I'm just copypasting. I'll apply changes a bit later. Let's get down to new sections. Again, it's time to copypaste blocks. And I don't even have to think about flexboxes or grid systems. Soon web developers will vanish. Mom, look, I'm a designer now. I'm starting a new section aka recommendations from clients. I'm also adding some quick on-hover animation. But having gray logos is a worldwide standard, so... Ok, major part is done. Let's do some code! If we want to display some real jobs, we need to connect our website with some sources. There can be a few different ways to do it. Like we can just download some XML file, and parse it. Very simple. More advanced way will require parsing RSS feeds(yes, it's still used in our modern web) and use it. It even will add some "dynamic" to our static website. For sure, the best way will be to create some sort of backend system. And our website will eat data from it. All magic will be handled by backend and we'll get an updated feed by CRON, for example. But I don't want to do a backend server. So no magic here :( I will use the same workflow as I did in my previous article. Will grab some data that available for public use. I'll make an empty block(aka skeleton) with some #ids that I can use for selectors. It will help me to append data to our website. I'll use on page load method, but maybe better to have a button like "refresh jobs" or "load more" button that will do another round of search. How To Clone A Famous Job Board Website using Velo by Wix

They say digital design is like paint that never dries.  Today, we're going to create our own piece of digital art. And WIX will become our ultimate drawing kit. But while paintings take years to get finished, our wedding website will be up and running in a few moments. Let's get into it. Look, I'm starting from scratch! A clean slate for crisp design. Stage 1 First things first - we are starting with building a Hero Unit to grab attention and showcase key content. For that, I'm uploading a couple of fancy wedding images. Then we need to resize and update the sub-heading on our first block. To add an aesthetic appeal to our website, let's upload the flowers image with a transparent background. Looks sweet, right? After that, I am proceeding with the next slides. Again, I resize the box, choose the font, adjust the font size, and change other text settings to my taste. Don't forget to center all messages. Otherwise, it won't look as sweet with the animation. As my next step, I am creating the links that will let the user switch from one website section to another. For that, I'm making necessary adjustments in the site menu. Now let's go over to the main menu setup. At this stage, I'm playing with the main menu settings to fine-tune the look-and-feel to my preferences. Bingo, the first part of the website is visible online to the delight of potential visitors. Stage 2 At this point, the header doesn't look its sharpest, so we need to play more. Let's spruce up the second section by tailoring the text settings and such. Stage 3 Here goes the fun part with rounded images. Oops, I couldn't find how to round an image from the builder side. I hope you can forgive me. Ok, now on to the next block - the one with a summer field background. Mind that it should look good while scrolling. Now I'm placing the first button as demonstrated on the screenshot and adjust its design. Here, I'm just watching and admiring the result. After that, I am switching to building a block with a couple's story. I am changing the design and resizing the box as usual. You can take a look at the screenshots below. Finally, I am setting up the 'Best moments' slideshow with awesome animations to better communicate the emotions. NEXT PART Now let's unfold the next stage. I want to see some more fonts on this page, so I'm uploading them into Font Manager. Convenient, isn't it? Especially for picky users like me. I decided to extend the font coverage with some Playfair Font. After that, I'm moving to the next block. Here, I'm changing the layouts and columns as you can see on the screenshot. Hooray, I found how to round the images with the built-in functionality. It took me just 2 hours to get there. Next, I'm cloning a friend. (wish it were that easy in real life) Looks geeewd now. And even better now. Now let's get to grips with the bridesmaids part. The editor helped me create the Major jquery method. And I even didn't use stackoverflow for that! Just think, this is how we used to build animations only a decade ago. Also, a big thank you to Mozilla and Google for killing IE browsers. It's also useful to see some help when you are typing. I always keep forgetting what we have there. At last, our tabs are working in a fancy way. But this is a static website. So let's get real mature and enliven things a bit. For that, I'm enabling the Dev Mode, updating some blocks, and adding some logic into it. Previously, I have made the Best Friends section. We can create a similar section. Let's put a few text blocks with a placeholder that we will replace soon. Don't forget about the aesthetic aspect. Each block should look sharp and remind you about our huge upcoming event. Velo wouldn't enable itself - so click a butttttoooonnnn and become a MASTER OF DEVELOPMENT. We'll pull our guest list from a free API that has some users inside: . dummyapi.io Yes, I'm suggesting you find out more about Velo API, because these guys have done an excellent job. Besides, the documentation is pretty cool. Here I'm doing my first velo-code-lines... feeling so young and excited ❤️ It's important to add the #id field because we'll use it in our selectors pretty soon. Now, I'm copy-pasting the guests. This is how I usually throw a huge offline party.
