BOSTON, Massachusetts, November 28th, 2023/Cyberwire/--A severe design flaw in Google Workspace's domain-wide delegation feature discovered by threat hunting experts from , can allow attackers to misuse existing delegations, enabling privilege escalation and unauthorized access to Workspace APIs without Super Admin privileges. Hunters’ Team Axon Such exploitation could result in theft of emails from Gmail, data exfiltration from Google Drive, or other unauthorized actions within Google Workspace APIs on all of the identities in the target domain. Hunters has responsibly disclosed this to Google and worked closely with them prior to publishing this research. Domain-wide delegation permits a comprehensive delegation between Google Cloud Platform (GCP) identity objects and Google Workspace applications. In other words, it enables GCP identities to execute tasks on Google SaaS applications, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and more, on behalf of other Workspace users. The design flaw, which the team at Hunters has dubbed “DeleFriend,” allows potential attackers to manipulate existing delegations in GCP and Google Workspace without possessing the high-privilege Super Admin role on Workspace, which is essential for creating new delegations. Instead, with less privileged access to a target GCP project, they can create numerous JSON web tokens (JWTs) composed of different OAuth scopes, aiming to pinpoint successful combinations of private key pairs and authorized OAuth scopes which indicate that the service account has domain-wide delegation enabled. The root cause lies in the fact that the domain delegation configuration is determined by the service account resource identifier (OAuth ID), and not the specific private keys associated with the service account identity object. Additionally, no restrictions for fuzzing of JWT combinations were implemented on the API level, which does not restrict the option of enumerating numerous options for finding and taking over existing delegations. This flaw poses a special risk due to potential impact described above and is amplified by the following: Long Life: By default, GCP Service account keys are created without an expiry date. This feature makes them ideal for establishing backdoors and ensuring long-term persistence. Easy to hide: The creation of new service account keys for existing IAMs or, alternatively, the setting of a delegation rule within the API authorization page is easy to conceal. This is because these pages typically host a wide array of legitimate entries, which are not examined thoroughly enough. Awareness: IT and Security departments may not always be cognizant of the domain-wide delegation feature. They might especially be unaware of its potential for malicious abuse. Hard to detect: Since delegated API calls are created on behalf of the target identity, the API calls will be logged with the victim details in the corresponding GWS audit logs. This makes it challenging to identify such activities. “The potential consequences of malicious actors misusing domain-wide delegation are severe. Instead of affecting just a single identity, as with individual OAuth consent, exploiting DWD with existing delegation can impact every identity within the Workspace domain,” says Yonatan Khanashvili of Hunters’ Team Axon. The range of possible actions varies based on the OAuth scopes of the delegation. For instance, email theft from Gmail, data exfiltration from the drive, or monitor meetings from Google Calendar. In order to execute the attack method, a particular GCP permission is needed on the target Service Accounts. However, Hunters observed that such permission is not an uncommon practice in organizations making this attack technique highly prevalent in organizations that don’t maintain a security posture in their GCP resources. “By adhering to best practices, and managing permissions and resources smartly, organizations can dramatically minimize the impact of the attack method” Khanashvili continued. Hunters has created a (full details are included in the full research) to assist organizations in detecting DWD misconfigurations, increasing awareness, and reducing DeleFriend’s exploitation risks. proof-of-concept tool Using this tool, red teams, pen testers, and security researchers can simulate attacks and locate vulnerable attack paths of GCP IAM users to existing delegations in their GCP Projects to evaluate (and then improve) the security risk and posture of their Workspace and GCP environments. Monorepos lets you manage multiple repositories into one single repository but managing and publishing them can be very tedious as the repositories grow. Lerna is a powerful tool that can be used to manage and publish monorepos in Javascript/Typescript projects. Lerna is a fast, modern build system for managing and publishing multiple JavaScript/TypeScript packages from the same repository. In this article, we will see how we can set up a monorepo with Lerna and Npm workspaces. If you are interested in setting up a monorepo with Vite, Pnpm, and Typescript you can check out my previous blog . here Why use Lerna? To use monorepos well, you need a good monorepo tool, and Lerna is exactly that. Lerna is fast, widely used, and battle tested. Monorepos can have tens if not hundreds of packages, and managing all of them together can become very difficult. Lerna can rescue us in this situation by doing the heavy lifting of managing the tasks in different packages, versioning, code deployment, etc. Lerna has some great in-built features which make managing monorepos surprisingly easier. : Lerna gives us an out-of-the-box solution to run tasks inside multiple packages together using command. Setting up Monorepo With Npm Workspaces and Lerna

As an entrepreneur or business owner, you're well aware of the blood, sweat, and tears that go into building something from the ground up. The endless hours of meticulous planning and execution, those back-to-back all-nighters, and the unwavering focus and drive it takes to succeed. You know what's essential for all that? A well-organized and controlled workspace. I've been riding this rollercoaster called business for quite a while now, and trust me, my work hours weren't always as productive as they are today. It's honestly a bit daunting to think about the time I lost because I couldn't concentrate. But you know what? It wasn't some earth-shattering discovery or motivational book that turned things around for me. It was a bunch of small, everyday life hacks that I gradually applied to different aspects of my life, like my sleep patterns, work habits, time management, health, and fitness - and of course, my physical surroundings. That's what I'm thrilled to share with you today. Can you imagine that clearing up your desk can make a world of difference in your productivity? Or that making a few ergonomic tweaks can give you an energy boost? Let's explore some of my go-to workspace hacks that have helped me achieve more consistent productivity. (Get ready to be surprised!) 1. Pay Attention To Your Eye Line I listened to an incredible recently by the one and only Dr. Andrew Huberman. If you've never listened to or read anything from this brilliant mind, now's the time; I highly recommend that you go check out his podcast, website, and YouTube channel. I'm a huge fan. podcast episode During the episode, Huberman mentions an interesting function of the eye. Different neurons are fired in our brains depending on the direction we move our eye line. If we look upward, for instance, we're going to experience feelings of alertness. Looking down activates the opposite – feelings of calm and sleep. You can use this understanding to biohack your workspace. Huberman suggests that looking just slightly above your usual straight-ahead eye line triggers optimal alertness. For me personally, I've leveraged this by placing my monitors just above eyeline; I'm automatically prompted to look slightly upward and be more alert as a result. 2. Choose Your Space Have you ever heard of the ? It's one of the coolest concepts I've come across in recent years. Cathedral Effect The idea is simple: if you want to be productive in creative endeavors, you should ideally be sitting under a high 'cathedral' ceiling. Acclaimed creative architect "...our perception of mental space moves in parallel with our perception of physical space." When we're under a tall ceiling, it's as though our mind gets drawn upward – our eyes, our emotions, our aspirations, and our ambitions. Creativity flows freely. Donald Rattner writes that That's why you'll notice such tall ceilings in coworking spaces, churches, and even libraries. Now I'm not suggesting you go out and buy a cathedral ceiling for your home office – but if you have the option to choose where to work, it's worth considering the psychological effects of different spaces. Low ceilings, in fact, are excellent for technical and detail-oriented work. All your senses focus in on the task at hand. Experiment with working in different parts of your home; you might just find that your new environment sparks something different in you, or works more cohesively with your specific tasks. 3. Refine Your Tech I love Apple products – I really do. They're of exceptional quality, and I rarely (if ever) encounter issues with a Mac. But when it comes to ergonomics? Laptops in general have a lot to answer for. Think about it: Laptops sit almost flush with your desk, meaning you're far more prone to leaning your wrists on the desk edge. That's a surefire way to get stuck with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). There's no elevation – a lot of the time, you're looking downward at the screen, which strains both your neck and eye muscles. As we discussed before, looking down makes you sleepy; not ideal for productivity. The trackpad has absolutely zero ergonomic value. Your palm isn't supported at all. The keyboard has limited tactile feedback. (It's not a huge issue – just a bit sad!) If you're still struggling along with a low screen, flat keyboard, and feeble trackpad, something needs to change. And contrary to what you might have been told, it doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg. Unless you're prepared to buy a monitor with a stand, there are other ways to elevate your laptop screen. You can get a laptop stand for under $20 that perfectly lifts your laptop to eye line height. It'll keep you alert and ensure those neck muscles aren't being over-extended. An ergonomic mouse might set you back around $40 – and believe me, it's worth it. You'd be surprised at just how much effort it takes to maneuver a trackpad. Ergonomic mice support the natural curvature of your hand so you hardly need to exert at all. Finally, you'll benefit from a mechanical keyboard; it's a that mechanical keyboards both boost productivity and reduce the occurrence of CTS. (Plus, they're incredibly satisfying to type with). Become A Background Noise DJ We tend to think of our workspace as just the physical pieces – a desk, a chair, a computer, a mouse. Perhaps a second screen. But what about the environment? Don't be afraid to experiment. The research is there, but still, we're all unique; our minds don't follow strict rules, and our preferences often differ. You might find pink noise repulsive or binaural beats sleep-inducing. Test the waters to find what works best for you. 5. Free Your Setup of Friction What I've found in my many hours of sitting at a desk is that – alongside the biohacking – productivity is about making your work frictionless. For instance: do you have to switch all of your cords in and out due to a lack of power points? Every time you have to swap your laptop charger out for a phone charger or lamp, you're breaking focus. What about the mess – do you let clutter build and forget to tidy up at the end of the day? The next day, you'll have to move the mess before starting work. More friction. And what about your charging etiquette? Do you make sure everything's plugged in before going to bed? If you're waiting for a laptop or keyboard to charge up in the morning, you place even more resistance between yourself and the workday ahead. It's work critically looking at your setup to see what could be altered. I've added some surge-protected powerboards to my wall, and it makes cord management much easier. I've also got a bin right next to my desk so that mess doesn't need to build up. Another thing to think about is the emotional friction getting in your way. Do you actually enjoy the space you're working in? Could you make it feel more lively with some plants or artwork? I've found that a few small touches can make my workspace feel more inviting and reduce the amount of mental resistance I have to face each day. Friction adds up quickly, and it's the enemy of productivity – but free your setup of as much resistance as possible, and you'll be surprised by how much easier work becomes. Monorepos are hot these days and they can significantly improve the development workflow and productivity among teams. In this article, we will talk about how to set up a monorepo with Vite, Typescript, and pnpm workspaces. What is a monorepo? Before we jump into the setup, we first need to understand what is a monorepo and why should we care about it. A monorepo is a repository that contains many distinct projects which are somewhat dependent on each other but are logically independent - meaning different teams can work on them in isolation. Let's say we’re building an application and we have two projects inside of it: : This will have all our shared components that can be used by different projects. Shared : This is going to be our main project which will be the consumer of our package. Main Shared One way to work with this type of project is a multi-repo approach where we create two separate repositories and host them at the npm registry. Then, the consumer app can install it from the npm registry and use it how we import and use , , and other packages. React Tailwind Material-UI The problem with this type of workflow is every time we will make any new changes to the package, we will have to publish the app again to the npm registry for the consumer app to get the latest changes and use them. shared Monorepos can significantly improve this workflow by packaging both of these projects into a single repository and importing components directly from the workspace instead of importing them from the cloud. Hello everyone! Postman is one of the most popular API testing tools - it combines the ability to test things manually and add some sort of automation to it. In this article you’ll know how to best organize your Workspace in Postman - it’ll help you faster reach any request your need and get rid of some manual tasks like renewing your authorization token. So let’s begin with the creation of a new Workspace! Environment Usually, there are at least a few environments in most of the projects - (where developers upload their features first and might test them on their end), (platform for QA verification) and , of couse. development staging production Every environment has a bit different base url, but path (route) usually stays the same. For example: - production https://example.com/some/route - https:// .example.com/some/route staging staging - https:// .example.com/some/route development dev See? In case of and environments - they simple have subdomains assigned, but the path (some/route) stays the same. It means that base url is one of our first candidates to become an - a value that changes between environments. staging development environment variable Usage of base url as an environment variable let us use a single template in Postman to send a request to any environment that we have configured in our collection. Now let’s create a new Environment and name it . Spoofing, Phishing, and Spamming are common threats an individual or an entire organization is likely to encounter. Now, what do these terms- Spoofing, Phishing, and Spamming mean? - is a criminal activity where a scammer tries to get access to someone's personal information by pretending to be a legitimate business. Spoofing -Phishing attacks are always ensuring you are who you say you are and that any information you provide is genuine. There have been several recent high-profile cyber breaches involving UK government departments. Information that could uncover sources of classified information has been released online, compromising military and diplomatic networks. This has resulted in the necessity for individuals to train themselves how to spot phishing scams in their own inboxes. Phishing The most common source of attacks are emails sent to employees or customers that seem to come from legitimate sources but are loaded with malicious macros or spyware hiding amongst legitimate documents or other material designed to infiltrate computer systems. Aside from worsening the browsing experience of those who receive them, these tactics also serve as a boon for scammers looking to infiltrate employee or business networks to steal data or infiltrate organizations in hopes of causing financial harm. phishing -It is important to understand that there is a difference between spamming and unwanted email. Unwanted email is unwanted because it is bulk and impersonal. Spamming, on the other hand, is personalized and comes from a genuine place. If you want something from someone (an answer to a question, for example), it's important not to fall for the tactics used by spammers. Email marketing has become one of the most potent forms of internet marketing, used to send out hundreds or even thousands of emails to thousands of recipients in an attempt to build a database of potentially interested parties. This forms a huge part of spamming as it will always outnumber genuine emails, which makes it much easier to identify and deal with spam messages. Spamming If you send mass emails without looking for feedback or educational purposes, you run a high risk of spammers finding your address and sending you junk mail. Avoid making purchases from sources that offer free shipping or require you to validate your ID before getting your products. Avoid sending out marketing emails unless you have a good relationship with the senders and can trust them to deliver only legally obtained products or services. It's important to realize that today's social networking is a whole-of-communication platform wherein every message or piece of content is equally available to everybody within a given circle. This creates the urgent need to fight spamming and connect people in a more constructive way. Of late, social networking sites have introduced a feature wherein you can report spamming emails or social media posts to the respective service providers. How Admins can use Google Workspace to prevent these threats · is an email authentication technique that publishes authorized mail servers to send emails for your domain. SPF protects your domain from spoofing and helps to ensure that messages are delivered correctly. It has been designed to improve the overall security of e-mail communication by creating a visible reputation system for sending e-mail messages from an organization. Consequently, SPF also helps avoid spamming. Mail servers verify the origin of emails using the Domain Name System (DNS) records. An SPF record is included in each email message, indicating which mail servers issued the email. Sender policy framework If a domain is registered with multiple mail service providers, then each provider will forward mail to the corresponding mail server. However, since these providers may not keep a consistent record of who owns what domain, falls short of protecting against spoofing and human error. Sender Policy Framework is an email authentication technique that publishes authorized mail servers to send emails for your domain. SPF protects your domain from spoofing and helps to ensure that messages are delivered correctly. SPF prevents spoofing using Gmail accounts by default; however, you can change this behavior and return mail to the sender by including an SPF record in your domain's MX records or adding Spam Warning in your email Header (as well as any other Within Network record). SPF · is a protocol that improves email delivery security. It can be used for several purposes, but most importantly it improves message authentication. By ensuring that messages are signed by the actual domain owner, it enables the originator to be verified and protected when sending emails from an address that might not be authorized. The problem with relying solely on email providers to implement domain key-based e-mail protection is that they often implement it in a way that makes it difficult for spammers to hide their identities. DomainKey Identified Mail (DKIM) This is why you have to find ways to ensure that your DKIM signed emails aren't automatically deleted by your recipient's mail client or server. You can prevent spammers from sending you spam emails by following best practices for email filtering. By implementing a spam filter, you can also quickly identify when a message is from a known source. Spam filters use DomainKeys Infrastructure (DKI), a public key infrastructure for email domains. When you communicate with an email server using HTTPS, both sides of the communication have a private, randomly generated key a DomainKeys Header. This is used to encrypt the data flow between your computer and the email server. Let’s do that in the signature editing section, which is the next part. 4. Edit the email signature In the fourth step, we need to edit the email signature and add the placeholders of the integration. In the department created, visit the menu . And, after this, click on . Throughout 2020 and 2021 the mode of working changed for many people. There was less office time, moving away from big cities, and more time spent working in an unconventional spot, like on your couch or a closet so you could get someplace quite for a few minutes. As a long-time work from home employee my work changed as well, which lead me to question exactly what I needed from . my work setup How It Was When I first started working from home, years ago, I assumed my home workspace basically had to be a home office. This wasn't practical in NYC, SF, or other cities, but I did it anyway. I had a big L-shaped desk, a secondary monitor, , a powerful workstation, and a mechanical keyboard. My office had a printer, a stapler, stereo speakers, and all the other accessories that make a place feel professional. I even had a VoIP phone at one time, so I would never drop calls thanks to spotty mobile phone service. a vertical monitor A lot has changed in the past 10 years. 2022 WFH Life Last year lots of us started working from home, and I already had my setup, but, like everyone else, more people were in my home as well. My spouse needed a spot to work, my kids were doing online school and needed work places -- the days of the dedicated home office were over. Now I, like many others, settled into an itinerant WFH experience -- spending a few hours at the standing desk, a few on the couch, 30 minutes in a walk-in closet to do a presentation... This got me thinking about what was needed from a workspace. Under 30 Minutes If I'm working for a time slot of under 30 minutes, I find it can be anywhere. Sitting up in a bed, sitting on a couch, standing at the kitchen counter, it doesn't matter. If I have my laptop and a WiFi connection, I'm good to go. 1 Hour If you are working for a 1-hour slot, any place will do. You can be sitting or standing (providing the standing place is sufficiently high) and the place needs to be away from foot trafffic, but I find nothing else is necessary. almost 1-3 Hours For a 1-3 hours stretch of working, I need a everything mentioned previously, plus seating, an outlet for charging, a place to put a glass of water or a cup of coffee. 3-5 Hours This is a serious stretch of time. Data scientists would most likely have the following materials dumped in their project working directory: Python/R scripts Data sets — includes journal articles, slides, other documents Reference materials Notebooks Notes Scala sources (if using spark) — usually, a source of inspiration, methodology or case studies Cloned repository of other projects relevant to the current work for data transfer, data clean-up or even for runners.sh to submit jobs on a cluster. Given a project, Data Scientists follows these steps to tackle it; Workflow of data science work Requirements gathering ETL data from sources using python, R or scala - perform descriptive statistics on data to validate whether it reflects business facts. This takes sometime, even on collaborative environment where business and data scientists are working closely. In addition, data calibration is also needed to further verify business facts. Data calibration - with data validated and calibrated, A Data Scientist can now start working on generating insights - producing notebooks, scripts or scala jars. How-to Declutter Your Data Science Workspace

So, a few months back I created a Slack workspace for people from various walks to come together to share interesting articles, videos and podcasts — think of it as a place where you find something interesting to read from various domains such as business, education, technology and so on. People started joining and like all groups, it reached a stage where I felt the # active people were < # people in the group. I wanted to send a message to everyone asking if they’d like to continue or leave the group. Note: If you’re interested in joining the workspace, comment below. So, I opened Google and typed “How to send direct message to everyone in a Slack workspace”. To my surprise, there was no direct way of doing it. The only way was to create a Slack bot yourself and add a few lines of code to enable this feature — and I found no article that had the detailed procedure. I had some free time, so I thought I’d try it myself. It would also serve as a good refresher for my upcoming interviews. Warning: I am an amateur when it comes to programming, so it took me 3 days and lots and lots and lots and lots…. of errors after which it finally worked. Hopefully, this step by step guide should make it easier for you. Minute 1: Download Python 2.7.13 and Add To PATH You are going to need to set up the environment before beginning to code. You need the following to create the bot and make it work: Python 2.7.13 Pip and virtualenv A slack account and a workspace that you are part of Note: I did it on my Windows laptop. The commands are slightly different if it’s on a Mac or Linux machine, so kindly check online for the appropriate changes. That’s it. Now, to download the Python 2.7.13 version. follow this link Do not download Python 2.7 as it is not compatible with downloading the latest Pip versions. Have you downloaded and installed? Great! Now, if you open up your Command Prompt and type Python, it will show the following: This is because the Go to My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced System Settings -> Environment Variables. You should see the following. Python path has not been added to your PATH environment variable. Click on Path and ‘Edit’. Add a new path there: (assuming that’s where your Python directory is or add whatever the path is). C:\Python27 Now open Command Prompt and type Python. It should work! Minute 2: Download and Install pip Time to download . is a package management system used to install and manage software packages written in Python. and download the get-pip.py file and save it on a new folder. This is the folder where all your files should be saved from now. pip pip Follow this link Now, open Command Prompt, navigate to the folder where the pip file is and type: python get-pip.py It should work and tell you that it’s successful. Now, you have to add the path to the pip file as you did before. Follow the same instructions as before and add this to your PATH environment variables: (this is where the pip file is). C:/Python27/Scripts Now type pip in Command Prompt and it should work! Minute 3: Install and Activate virtualenv is a tool to create isolated Python environments. creates a folder which contains all the necessary executables to use the packages that a Python project would need. virtualenv virtualenv Simply go to the folder where you stored your get-pip.py file and type the following: pip install virtualenv Once it’s installed, you need to create a new virtualenv and activate it. virtualenv env env\Scripts\activate The above commands should give you the following screen: I was too attached to this project, hence the name Slack Baby Minute 4: Create A New Slack App and Slack Bot Now it’s time to create a bot that will do the actual task of sending messages to all members. and go to the Slack API page. Login there with your Slack account credentials and you should see a screen like this. Follow this link Once you click on Create an App, fill in the App name and choose your workspace: Now, move over to the Bot Users tab on the left and create a new bot: Once you’ve added this, you need to go to OAuth & Permissions and authorize the bot to post in your workspace: All good so far? Now, go back to OAuth & Permissions. You should see the following two tokens. These are very important and hence keep it to yourself. Minute 5: Install Slackclient and Check If API Call Works Open up the good old Command Prompt again (hopefully it’s still kept open), go to the folder with the pip file and type the following: pip install slackclient We need the SlackClient to connect to the Slack Bot. Let’s see if it works now. Copy the and keep it. Now, type python in the Command Prompt and enter the python environment. Bot User OAuth Access Token Minute 6: Time To Test The Environment Till now, all we did was set up the environment. Now it’s time to write the actual code that will do the magic. I want you to first test if your environment works by writing a code that gets the list of all channel names in your workspace and posts that in the Prompt. Use the following code: (Comment below to get this code + my code which will come later on) Now, in the Command Prompt, type: python filename.py It should display below all the channel names in your workspace. Works? Awesome! Minute 7: Method I: Use Dan Goldin’s Code So, I found this (huge thanks to Dan!) who had written a script already that will do the job. . I will show two ways you can execute the job. blog by Dan Goldin Here is his Github code First, we will use Dan’s code. Next, I will show my code. So, hopefully you have downloaded Dan’s code and put it in the folder you’ve been using up till now. First, we need to install requirements.txt. In your Command Prompt, exit the python environment by typing . Now, type: exit() pip install -r requirements.txt It should install all the packages needed! Now, open spam_channel_members.py in (or whichever python IDE you have) and paste your token in the line IDLE sh = SlackHelper(‘paste your token here’) Minute 8: Method 2: Use My Code Now, this is the final part. Type the following in the prompt: python spam_channel_members.py your_test_channel_name your_test_message This should hopefully work! So, I wrote a code to do the same which is shorter but probably not optimal. Here is the code: I am basically getting the list of users in the workspace using the users.list API call, extracting the members dictionary from it, and using a for loop to send messages to the member using their ID. This worked fine for me, and hope it does for you. If you need the above code, commend below and I’ll email it to you! Once you have the above code ready in a Python file, simply go to Prompt and type: python filename.py That is all! It should hopefully show you a ‘Success!’ message once it’s executed and you should have sent a message to everyone in your workspace. ******************************************************************* So hopefully that worked out for you. Personal macOS Workspace Setup

Persist ~ 70% faster; restore ~ 80% faster, your mileage may vary A few days ago, commented on where I shared how we automate our release process with . can be summarized with “ ” Andrew Stiegmann a blog post of mine CircleCI Andrew’s comment Hey, is there any reason you use CircleCI cache instead of a workspace? I read up on that explains the difference between a cache and a workspace. Their diagram does a great job explaining all that: a CircleCI blog post CircleCI cache vs workspace. Source: CircleCI blog post Our CircleCI workfow contains of five jobs, each needs access to and a bunch of generated files in folders. Our “build job” as outlined in the diagram is where we install all npm packages and generate the files in the folders. We use a monorepo (more about that ), which results in a lot of packages hoisted to the root directory. node_modules dist dist here node_modules Migrate from a cache to a workspace The main change here is in the file. First, the directive needs to be replaced with . Likewise, any occurrence of needs to be replaced with an directive. .circleci/config.yml [save_cache](https://circleci.com/docs/2.0/configuration-reference/#save_cache) [persist_to_workspace](https://circleci.com/docs/2.0/configuration-reference/#persist_to_workspace) [restore_cache](https://circleci.com/docs/2.0/configuration-reference/#restore_cache) [attach_workspace](https://circleci.com/docs/2.0/configuration-reference/#attach_workspace) In our case, that change alone improved persistence of data by about 60% (from 67 seconds writing to the cache to 27 seconds persisting to a workspace), while restoring it in a subsequent job dropped from 35 seconds with a cache to 12 seconds with a workspace (a roughly 65% performance gain). Bonus improvement — prune node_modules So far so good, but while I was at it, I dug a bit deeper. For a while now I’ve had an eye on our directory size… 🙀 Have you ever checked yours? If so, I’m quite sure you’re with me here. If not, go ahead and check yours, then come back here — I’ll wait. node_modules Heaviest objects in the universe — based on estimates Alright, now that all readers understand what I mean, let’s continue. In our case, the size of is 553 MB. Does it have to be though…? Definitely not! There’s no need to have files, documentation assets, tests, temporary files, etc. All these files have to be compressed and decompressed when we share it across jobs on CircleCI, regardless of whether we use a cache or a workspace. node_modules *.md I’m aware of two options, so I implemented both and compared them to make an informed decision on which one to choose. node-prune TJ Holowaychuk built that for one of his products and open-sourced it at . It’s a tiny Go command that can be installed in a single line. In our case, it takes 3 seconds to install and run the command. The output of the command looks as follows: https://github.com/tj/node-prune node-prune doing its job on CircleCI That’s 136 MB of unnecessary files dropped from the directory. That’s also 136 MB less data to be compressed and decompressed when passing data from one CircleCI job to the next. node_modules Now, persisting data to a workspace takes 20s, a roughly 70% improvement compared to the original implementation of using a cache. Restoring that data takes 7 seconds, a total of 80% faster than what we had originally. yarn autoclean I wasn’t satisfied with only one option to prune . Whenever possible, it’s a good idea to have a few extra data points. node_modules I found as documented at . This command cleans up as part of the command. yarn autoclean https://yarnpkg.com/lang/en/docs/cli/autoclean/ node_modules yarn install Running that resulted in slightly slower performance results compared to . took about 20 seconds longer (because it runs ) which is 17 seconds more than what requires to get installed and prune the dependencies. Persisting the repository to a workspace took 23 seconds (about 65% faster than compared to a cache) and restoring the workspace was “only” about 70% faster. node-prune yarn install autoclean node-prune Conclusion This table taken from the PR I opened at work summarizes the results: CircleCI cache vs workspace I completely dropped the cache for now, mainly to keep the PR small and manageable. I’m playing with some thoughts to see whether a cache could help speed up multiple workflow runs. In our case, we save 2.6 minutes for an entire workflow on CircleCI.
