Introduction To Training Pipelines The typical machine learning training process consists of various tasks such as data preparation, model training, model validation, model deployment and others. Because you may want to iterate on your model even after you deploy it to production, it is paramount to automate these tasks, e.g. to run them with new data, hyper-parameters, changes in the code, etc. Training pipelines help automate these tasks. At the same time, it is crucial to keep the pipeline reproducible, in the sense that you as well as others can replicate it and obtain similar results. In order to ensure that pipelines are reproducible, it is crucial to track infrastructure, code, data, hyper-parameters, experiment metrics, etc. In this article, I’ll give an overview on how WandB and dstack together can help build reproducible training pipelines. Experiment tracking First, we’ll start with experiment tracking. Experiment tracking involves tracking hyper-parameters (e.g., step-size, batch size, etc.) experiment metrics (e.g., accuracy, training loss, validation loss, etc.) hardware system metrics (e.g., the utilization of GPUs, memory, etc.) WandB provides one of the easiest ways to perform experiment tracking, as it is easy to integrate into the ML code (addition of only a few lines of code) uses cloud to store the results so you can always find these metrics by your run name (don’t underestimate the importance of this, as storing metrics on you local machine may be rather an anti-pattern in regard to reproducibility) automatically provides the visualization of various metrics with nice charts WandB is very easy to integrate into your existing codebase. Below is an example of how to do it if you use PyTorch Lightning. We need to import the object. Then, instantiate the object and pass a project name as its argument, as shown below. For this purpose, we use dstack. Here’s a brief list of what dstack can do: version data, code, and infrastructure automate training tasks through declarative configuration files automatically provision infrastructure in a linked cloud account (it supports AWS, GCP, and Azure), Most importantly, it can be used from your favorite IDE (or terminal) To automate workflows with dstack, one needs to define them in the file. ./dstack/workflows.yaml Here’s a very simple example: workflows:

COVID-19 has had a significant effect on nearly every facet of life, including the way we work. And while much of the impact that the crisis has brought to the workforce has been negative, including massive layoffs, meteoric spikes in employee burnout and a dizzying need for continuous adaptation, there’s also an enormous amount of newfound opportunity for workers. With the shift to remote environments, workers find themselves in a situation where they have unprecedented flexibility, freedom and overall opportunity to carve out the careers of their choosing. No longer are their jobs confined to geographic locations, draining commutes and 9-5 work days.  Individuals can now work where they want, when they want and how they want. And while this is great for workers, it’s quite the dilemma for employers. Particularly those that employee today’s tech talent. Remote Work Gives Employees Endless Options Recent research from .Tech Domains found that living near the U.S.’ top tech hubs are looking towards relocation. And why wouldn't they? With the unprecedented flexibility that remote environments have afforded them, it makes sense that they’re considering lifestyles that better fit their current situations. Covid-19 Has Given Tech Employees A Wandering Eye - Here's How Organizations Can Adapt

Everything you need to know about the WandX Dapp & its unique features WandX recently released its decentralized app (Dapp) in beta for Windows, Mac and Linux (Ubuntu). You can . Currently in beta, the Dapp is connected to the test nets of both Ethereum and NEO. download it here On September 9th, 2018, the app will transition to connect to the main net for both blockchains. Essentially, what this means is that between now and the 9th, you can play with fake cryptocurrency on it without any consequences. After the 9th, you’ll start using your actual cryptocurrency balances. The beta app is a tremendous milestone for WandX in its efforts to manifest its for users — individual and institutional alike. While the app has many features including trading tokens much like on a traditional exchange, the basket-and-sell feature offers a very simple and effective stepping stone (i.e., an entry point) that connects new, willing traders to the world of crypto financial assets in a way that’s convenient, meaningful and more risk-balanced than other means of entry. Basket Protocol Prior to the WandX app, sending many altcoins simultaneously has been a problem. With web-based Ethereum wallet applications like MyEtherWallet, users had to send ERC-20 Tokens synchronously, rather that simultaneously. This requires repeating multiple steps and sometimes even re-validating credentials. This turned tasks like wallet migrations into tedious processes. Moving all of your assets from one wallet to another took time and cost transaction fees for each transfer. The Basket Protocol feature removes that inconvenience. Through WandX, you’re able to select which tokens you want to transfer, bundle them up in a basket, and get them set up for a one-time transfer using the WandX smart contract. This process reduces the required time, removes repeated steps, and reduces the cost by generating only one transaction rather than multiple per transaction. Currently in Beta, the WandX decentralized app allows you to basket up to three different tokens. I hope that in future releases of the app, users will be able to basket more tokens — this is a feature I would definitely use when migrating my tokens or transferring certain ones to different wallets. Furthermore, Baskets can be used to create custom Index funds, which can also be sold to potential buyers. While the Basket Protocol feature is one of the most unique aspects of the app, it comes with a multitude of other features including locally hosting your own wallet (Ethereum and NEO), making trades through the WandX exchange, and staking WANDNEO tokens to generate profits from transaction fees on the app. Getting Started with the WandX App Within the app, you can do multiple things, including: Register & confirm airdrops hosted by WandX. Airdrop registration is straightforward. Prior to registering, you’ll need to join the and have a NEO and/or Ethereum address. If you don’t have an address yet, don’t worry; you can create one through the app within the Wallet section, which is what we’ll explore next. WandX Telegram channel Create and manage Ethereum and/or NEO wallets. Managing and creating wallets on the Ethereum or NEO blockchain is straightforward as well. All wallets and address keys are locally stored on your device, so only you have access to it. Make trades through the WandX exchange similar to how you would in a normal exchange. WandX has its own exchange built into the wallet, making trading much more convenient and involves less risk for users. Create baskets of cryptocurrencies using WandX smart contracts. The allows users to package different cryptocurrencies together; you can think of it as creating an index. After creating one, you can sell it, keep it, or you can just buy other baskets directly instead of creating one. WandX Basket Protocol Stake your WANDNEO to earn Transaction Fees. In the Staking section, you’re able to store your WANDNEO separately to stake. By staking, you’re able to earn a percentage of all transaction fees generated through the WandX transactions (e.g., exchanges and basket sales). Analogously, it’s like a savings account where you can earn interest as long as your funds remain unused in the account. You can stake any amount and withdraw your stake at any time. The more you stake, the more earnings you will receive from transaction fees. The WandX App Tackles Unique Problems 1. A New Method for Asset Discovery As mentioned earlier, the Basket Protocol is a powerful and unique feature of the WandX app. Through this feature, users can buy preconfigured packages of cryptocurrencies, hedging risk through diversification. Soon, users will be able to request specific token baskets, further allowing them to create asset portfolios one smart contract at a time, regardless of the amount of tokens requested. The allows users to package different cryptocurrencies together; you can think of it as creating an index. After creating one, you can sell it, keep it, or you can just buy other baskets directly instead of creating one. WandX Basket Protocol Through the WandX app, you can browse the available baskets through the first tab, (see above). Each listing has a listing price. For NEO, the prices are in GAS. The listing also describes the contents of the various cryptocurrencies within the basket. At the very bottom, there is the Buy button. Token Baskets Through , you’re able to view all of the Baskets that you own, either through creating or buying. And in the , you can create your baskets. Within the section, you need to first give your Basket a name in the Portfolio Title section. Then you should select the tokens you want to include in them. Because it’s a basket, you’ll need to select at least two. My Token Baskets Create Token Baskets For each token you select, you’ll be able to see the available tokens that you have, the deposited tokens, and set the quantity of each token that you want to put into the basket. Finally, you need to enter your Asking price, which is what you are willing to sell the basket for. Prior to the Basket Protocol feature, people have used limited resources for asset discovery (i.e., finding and learning about new coins). These resources included ICO lists, market sentiment through social media, and biased sources that drive hype and hope. 2. Reducing Cost and Time for Trading Multiple Assets You can create and manage your wallets directly through the WandX app. At the top of the table, you’ll see three tabs: ETH Wallets — you can click this to manage all of your Ethereum addresses, which store your ERC-20 tokens as well NEO Wallets — you can click this to manage all of your NEO addresses, which store your NEP5 tokens as well and also generates Gas Create/Add Wallet — Use this to create your first Ethereum/NEO wallet on the WandX app. The first thing you’ll want to do is create a wallet. Because this is a decentralized desktop app, the private key information is stored locally on your desktop, which means WandX doesn’t hold or see any data on your private key. This means that you are in full control of your wallet, just like if you created it on something like MyEtherWallet. But it also means that you are responsible for keeping your key safe and available so no unauthorized user can gain access, while you can access your wallet anywhere at any time. If you have a personal wallet that you want to just import, you can do so by importing it through a UTC/JSON file that contains the wallet information, or by pasting in the private key. If you don’t know what that means or if you don’t have a wallet, don’t worry — you can generate a new one straight through the app. Just click (see below). Generate new wallet After you click on that, you will need to name your wallet. You can give it any name, just something you’ll remember next time you see it. For example, if you want to use one for personal and one for business, you might name one Personal and the other one Business. After that, you’ll need to set a password. While there are no requirements, you should naturally create one that is strong and memorable for yourself. You’ll need to use the password to unlock your wallet before making any transactions through the WandX app. After you submit your Wallet Name and Password, the Wallet and Token Details will appear underneath (see above). The address is publicly available information and is what identifies your wallet; you’ll use it to store your funds. The Private Key is essentially the password to your Wallet, so you should never share that. You can copy it and store it in a safe place. Finally, underneath you’ll see a button: . When you click the button, the folder will open up that contains the JSON file for your wallet information, so next time if for some reason you have to re-add your wallet, you can just add through the Keystore File. Go To Wallet Keystore You can use this wallet to store and trade assets. Because the private keys are stored locally, no one has access to your resources except you. This is different from exchange wallets, where you don’t own your private key and therefore do not own your own wallet. That’s why users often publish horror stories about exchanges freezing their funds. Through the wallet, you’re able to store smart-contract trades as well, which enable basket trading. Through baskets, you’re able to trade multiple assets simultaneously through only a single fee, which reduces costs and saves time. This is a unique feature available only through the WandX wallet. Unique Trading Platforms for Various Blockchains Unlike with other wallets, users are able to trade directly through the WandX app for tokens on both the Ethereum and NEO blockchain. This means no more opening wallets, exposing private keys, and transferring personal assets across various exchanges. In the latter scenario, every transfer introduces another point for possible human error, which can risk loss of funds. The WandX exchange, which is available within the app, is just like a normal exchange that you would find on the web. From here, you’re able to make and place trades for Ethereum, Ethereum Tokens, NEO, and NEO Tokens. From helping bookaholics to converting your life into prime-time, what happened behind the scenes at a 9-week coding bootcamp. Magic is great. Kids and adults are seduced by it alike. There is something about getting a result you want by whispering some non-sensical words or gesturing with a wand. Pre-historical societies performed rituals to unleash its powers and even the modern human cannot avoid attributing some of the events in her life to magic. The people that you meet, the activities that you do, the places you visit, the things you create that were not entirely nor exclusively the effort of your rational and planning-prone being, are in a way a fruit of magic, serendipity, destiny, randomness, whatever you prefer to call it. And life is full of them. Rather than feeling out of control, we are most of the times enchanted by and grateful for a little bit of magic in our lives. The mobile phone that was lost in a crowded subway, and you were able to find some days later, the ladybug that wants to share your beach towel, apparently coming out of nowhere. Much less romantic, but not lacking in some form of magic, was doing a coding bootcamp. . In fact forget the Oxford-like walls of Harry Potter classrooms, if you are looking for some magic, the renovated wharehouse walls of a hipster-wannabe open space, may be the place where you will see most invisible wands being raised 1. The magic of bringing to life products you imagined For people like me that find utmost pleasure in creating something from scratch, the bootcamp offered the opportunity and for not having to wait for someone else to implement your vision(s). You are now able to make a working prototype of your idea. Or of as many as you like after the bootcamp ends. Rinse and repeat. tools During the bootcamp, my team of 3 people developed a working prototype of a web app to facilitate meeting and renting books from bookaholics nearby — BookaBook — and a mobile-first web app to improve the way people use their spare time — primetime. Both issues are important to me, deserving plenty of attempts at being solved. Now we had the tools to take a stab at them. We started from zero, discussing the concepts, sketching the screens, designing and validating the database schema — please allow time this step or face a lifetime of migrations afterwards — generating and coding the models, the views and the controllers and seeing our new-born child being (literally) pushed to the web for the first time. 2. The (reverse) magic of seeing through the spells There is also magic in seeing what was once magical — the way the internet works, the way a button appears on a landing page, the way search delivers results — as something now more understandable. Moving on from being the naive and beguiled sorcerer’s apprentice to a bit more like the sorcerer herself. Now we can x-ray web apps, inspect their appearance (also, because we might like it so much that we want to use it as inspiration for our own creations 😁), and imagine the model-view-controller skeleton that allows them to move and live. Much like Dr. Frankenstein we are also now able, to patch our own code with the one coming from codepen (or the other place where you found that cool javascript animation), and hope for a living creature afterwards. Now we can always decide to devote a warm summer evening to giving birth to a new creation, confident that a button doesn’t take two weeks to be created. Granted, there are still things that will remain a bit magical, but that seems to be the case in every stage of learning, even for seasoned practitioners of a topic — some things become non-magical to give place to other more complex magical things on your horizon. Learners in fact are akin to magic hunters, that seek to find and destroy it to discover yet more magic. Over and over again. 3. The magic of letting both sides of your brain hang out in pure joy What the world sometimes sees as conflicting or opposites, the creative and the analytical, the right side and left side of the brain, here work together come up with the most innovative and functional products. And I am not talking about different people, but both sides of the same person, being summoned to collaborate. In fact, no good products are made only of good back-end nor good front-end, the best are exceptional at integrating good design with good back end performance, so divorcing the quantitative from the creative is not only dangerous, but most likely prone to produce a sub-par service. Not to mentioned that the idea of the product itself needs to drink plenty of creative juices to stand out in the noise. That said, and despite having learned full stack (both front-end and back-end), in the projects there were some groups that divided task using the back / front rule — I always had most fun doing a bit of both. 4. The magic of working together alone and alone together There is this myth that developers are isolated creatures that rely on their noise-cancelling headphones to shield themselves from the world and dwell in their own little bubble. And while that image can be appealing for people that enjoy long hours of deep and focused work, the truth is that they collaborate and much more often than you think. Proof of this is the much-loved collaboration tool, under the spotligth for having been recently acquired by Microsoft — GitHub, aimed at allowing people to build things together in a smoother way. Our teams had between 3–4 people, and we all had to learn the ropes of GitHub, going through the initial shivers-down-the-spine moment of merging code and pushing it to master. To add some complexity, heroku, the web host service was introduced (a third repository…). And you could rest assured that, no matter the warnings, someone would still push to heroku before pushing to GitHub. For all their merits, these tools are not people-proof. LOL. 5. The magic of sharing knowledge and learning in novel ways We developed the two prototypes in the last three weeks of the bootcamp. In the first 6 weeks, we would have brief lectures in the morning and then spend the rest of the day practicing the topics we had just learned. Every day we were assigned to a new “buddy”, another student, so that we could go through the exercises together. This is different from college, where we tend to stick to a group of people we already know, and also from work, were teams don’t usually change that often. Challenging you to learn from and teach to a new person every day. We were also assisted by TAs, themselves young people, alumni from LeWagon bootcamp, that could relate to our struggles and aspirations, and that came from different places around the globe. To newbies, some TAs displayed such amount of badassery, to fit the sorcerers’s analogy perfectly. I will not forget the poise with which Joanna, a TA, addressed our most pressing issues, looking at our half-baked code to extract the most sense of it, and serenely lead us to a less-broken one. While there is plenty of online content to learn to code, we would have a platform with assignments prepared to keep track of our progress with embedded tests that proofed our code while as we wrote it, considering things like the style of the code, e.g. if you wrote 100 lines of code when only one was needed, you would get “poor style” and had to refactor code to be able to move on. 6. The magic of making white magic sexy again And while black magic tends to be sexier — you know, sorcerers in dark garments — the way for good things with good consequences was paved the same. One of the prototypes — Stay Safe — allowed people to communicate in emergency situations related to spreading fires, a situation that has haunted our country over and over again, proving that so much can be done using for good. technology Helping bookaholics meet their peers, common people to make best use of their spare time, and other more mundane yet useful tasks like getting your food from a next door neighbor were all ideas protyped here using some white magic and good ends in view, and they looked pretty sexy in their white gowns. I cannot say this is what happens in every bootcamp — each one has its own structure, curriculum, teachers, students, location, etc, and any slight variation in any of these can make all the difference, even within the same organisation — nor what will happen after one. And there is always space to improve — some people are more gifted for teaching than others, collaborating with different people every day is not always devoided of friction, and you could argue some topics could take a longer percentage of the lecture time vs. others. But while this one lasted these were the magical elements that I have noticed and they seem some pretty sparkly ones. Ever attended a coding bootcamp? Feel free to share your experience!
