Walt Disney Co. emphasized streaming as one of its primary business strategies for the upcoming year in its fiscal Q1 earnings call on Feb. 8, hoping to make significant gains in profitability for their Direct-to-Consumer services, such Hulu and, most notably, Disney+. After seeing subscriptions decrease from 164.2 million in Q4 to 161.8 million in Q1, Disney said it plans $5.5 billion in cost savings. Major layoffs were announced as part of the company’s long-term plan to improve their streaming business’ profitability, amounting to 7,000 jobs, or an estimated 3.6% of Disney's global workforce. With CEO Bob Iger back at the helm after stepping down over two years ago, Disney is moving forward with an extensive restructuring into three core divisions: the Disney Entertainment unit for all things film, television and streaming, a sports-centric ESPN team, and a unit entirely dedicated to Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. The company’s significant shift in direction is not without its purpose, for the company’s mass reorganization is expected to “result in a more cost-effective, coordinated approach to our operations," according to Iger during the company’s Q1 conference call. “Moving forward, our creative teams will determine what content we're making, how it is distributed and monetized, and how it gets marketed. Managing costs, maximizing revenue, and driving growth from the content being produced will be their responsibility,” Iger said. Despite an increase of 13% for DTC revenues for the quarter, signaling a strong Q1 for Disney, operating losses also increased overall from $500 million to $1.1 billion, coupled with its first-ever major dip in Disney+ subscribership in recent months. The company aims to ensure the growth and profitability of its streaming business, according to the CEO, who noted that Disney+ is expected to “hit profitability” by the end of fiscal 2024. Iger said Disney also aims to capitalize on marketing and distribution opportunities: “We will fine-tune our advertising initiatives on all streaming platforms. We will improve our marketing, better balancing platform and program marketing while also leveraging our legacy distribution platforms for marketing and programming. This may include greater use of legacy distribution opportunities to increase revenue and more effectively amortize content investment.” The company also aims to be more mindful with regard to the quality and costs of the content it produces in order to reduce costs, noting that the company is “fueled by storytelling and creativity” and “virtually every dollar we earn, every transaction, every interaction with our consumers emanates from something creative.” “We're going to look at the volume of what we make. And with that in mind, we're going to be fairly aggressive at better curation when it comes to general entertainment. Because when you think about it, general entertainment is generally undifferentiated as opposed to our core franchises and our brands, which, because of their differentiation and their quality, have delivered higher returns for us over the years. So, we think we have an opportunity to, through more aggressive curation, to reduce some of our costs in the general entertainment side and, in general, in volume,” he added. Iger added that the company aims to be better positioned to withstand future disruption as well as the rising competition and the challenges presented by the global economy and to that end: “We must also return creativity to the center of the company, increase accountability, improve results, and ensure the quality of our content and experiences” Coinciding with data from their quarterly report, Disney rounded out the quarter with a total of 161.8 million Disney+ global subscribers, suggesting a significant loss of 2.4 million subs when compared to the previous quarter’s 164.2 million. Between Disney’s Media and Entertainment Distribution unit and its Parks, Experiences and Products team, total segment revenues for the quarter went up by 8%, with the company’s segment operating income running at a 7% loss compared to higher figures seen in fiscal 2022. Disney ultimately came out on top of Wall Street estimates, enjoying higher-than-expected revenues and adjusted earnings per share of 99 cents for the quarter versus the 78 cents per share analysts were expecting. A recent rise in park visitations served as a major contributor toward this boost in earnings, making up for the quarter’s outstanding losses caused by lower figures in Disney’s streaming business. To that end, Disney’s Parks, Experiences and Products division reflected major revenue wins for the quarter, going up 21% to $8.7 billion from the previous fiscal year’s $7.2 billion.

As a region, it is plentiful in resources; however, political turmoil and corruption have hindered economic development and growth in many of the included countries. That being said, some incredible leaders in LATAM are working hard to build a stronger economy and modernize their industries in hopes of creating a more prosperous future. Who is Federico Carrizo? originates from Argentina – not to be confused with the famous football player by the same name, from the same country. At the young age of 19, he started working as a software developer, making video games for mobile phones. In fact, Federico co-created the first game to go viral in Argentina. It ranked number one on Google Play Argentina for two entire months and saw more than 2M downloads. Federico Carrizo Since then, he has had the opportunity to work for a wide range of tech companies, including giants like Google and Globant. He joined Google after winning The Google Developer Bus – a programming competition and the very first reality show for developers in LATAM. His winning team developed a commercial solution based on Google Street View that facilitated commercial transactions through Google Wallet. It was then that Federico recognized the advances in technology and the growing adoption of digital payments. He saw an industry with great potential and decided to pivot his career in that direction. Carrizo started in the world of fintech with Walt Disney World Parks And Resorts, where he led a team of nine engineers to redesign the company’s e-commerce platform – an impressive first project considering the website’s annual revenue of $1.7B. Amazon and Disney Take Voice Assistance to Magical Heights with “Hey Disney”

There’s something about being an entrepreneur that seems to attract the risk-takers. Well, it makes sense, doesn’t it? If you’re going to forge a new path in the business world, there are no footsteps to follow. There’s no one to say, “Yeah, that’ll work!” because there’s no certainty in a new endeavor. It’s a bit of a gamble, and that means we have to bet on our only horse in the race — ourselves. But it doesn’t come naturally to everyone; in fact, some of us feel held back by invisible barriers and pushed down by intangible ceilings. Life has taught us to be careful and to play it safe. If you look at the most successful entrepreneurs, though — Jeff Bezos, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson, and even Thomas Edison — you’ll find that they all have one thing in common: they had to bet on themselves to find success. At points in all of their careers, they were their own sole supporters. So why don’t we bet on ourselves? Why do we choose to play it safe instead of taking a chance and going for broke? Let’s explore some of the reasons and then look at how to overcome them. Betting On Yourself: It’s Not So Simple At surface value, backing yourself seems like the obvious requirement for a successful career. Believe in yourself! Go for gold! But it isn’t that simple, is it? Maybe in the beginning, it is — but what about those first few months, when every cold call you make goes unanswered, and every email you send is met with radio silence? What about when the naysayers start to pile up or when your own doubts take hold? It’s easy to say that we need to back ourselves, but there’s a definite survival instinct within all of us that says playing it safe is the way to go. Even cheetahs will stop pursuing prey if they’re uncertain of a kill. I find it interesting, then, that some entrepreneurs seem to breeze through the trepidation. They go into business with an idea doomed to fail and simply assume they’ll be successful in the end. Why do they do it? And why can’t we all? The Intricacies of Boundless Confidence I’m fascinated by the personalities of entrepreneurs. When thinking about this newsletter, I knew there was something more to this idea of backing yourself — something rooted in our genetics, perhaps, or something that is instilled in us from a young age. Here’s what I found. Risk-Takers Are Nurtured, Not Bred This is one of the most I’ve ever come across. interesting studies With the intention of finding out whether business-minded families breed entrepreneurial children, the research team found something more intriguing: “Our findings are that a difficult childhood with challenging experiences , which could include such factors as loss of a parent, parental divorce or economic hardship, influence [entrepreneurial] attitudes.” In other words, this research found a basis for the idea that rough childhoods can foster a certain boldness in the face of adversity. Findings from the podcast seem to back this up: Creating Useful People “…change and disruption tend to be seen as unsettling for kids. However, what I see is that the need to overcome change and adapt to new circumstances has given people an advantage in their career or businesses. They learn not to see change as a big deal. They learn that they can overcome it. They learn to not fear the unknown.” This makes a lot of sense to me. When you grow up with only yourself to rely on, of course it would become your natural inclination. Bet on yourself? Why bet on anyone else? And we don’t have to look far to find a handful of entrepreneurs who grew up in the rough: Jan Koum, founder of WhatsApp, immigrated from Ukraine with his mother and lived in poverty from childhood into adulthood. Tony Robbins was terribly abused by his mother as a child — but he now speaks about this experience as a driving force behind his determination. Bethenny Frankel, founder of Skinny Girl, grew up with a very absent father and an alcohol-addicted mother. Stormy Simon — a highly successful businesswoman who — became a single mother at the young age of 17. I recently interviewed And of course, Oprah Winfrey speaks openly and often about the way her childhood abuse has shaped her life. The list goes on and on. Adversity Isn’t a Prerequisite At this point, I paused my research to take a breather. Does a person have to struggle through such adversity for a bit of self-confidence? What’s really going on here? If we look at the issue of childhood adversity, it begins to make sense. There’s no rule that says you need to face X amount of abuse or that your parents need to be dirt-poor for you to develop the capacity for greatness. It just so happens that adversity forces people to develop certain skills: resilience and adaptability. (This is all leading somewhere — stay with me.) Resilience According to the , “Resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences.” American Psychological Association It’s easy to see, then, how resilience rises up in sufferers of adverse childhood experiences. If they can adapt, they survive — and that resilience follows them into entrepreneurship. I found this on the Chinese Famine of 1959–1961. fascinating study Of the immigrants who lived through the famine, those who experienced the most hardship — and at a younger age — were more likely to become entrepreneurs. They would have required an unthinkable amount of resilience and self-reliance to make it through the famine. Adaptability When I think of adaptability, I immediately think of Walt Disney; who could forget the way he built a thriving company in the middle of the Great Depression? He adapted and pivoted his way through the most difficult of times to create a lasting legacy. Growing up, as it turns out, Disney’s parents were dirt-poor — and they weren’t overflowing with affection, either. His childhood was spent bouncing from one place to the next as his parents looked for work. That adaptability, that resilience, and self-reliance he developed as a child followed him into successful entrepreneurship. And it’s partly why we remember his name today. So… What If Your Childhood Was Peachy? The reason I shine the spotlight on resilience and adaptability is that they’re not exclusive to a life of hardship. Really, these are skills anyone can learn. It’s just about understanding their importance and then doing the work to develop them. You see, we don’t have to wait for adversity to hit us in the face before developing these skills — we can create our own adversity. We can purposely put ourselves into situations where we’re forced to be resilient and adaptable. Together, these two skills combine and produce self-reliance. We can bet on ourselves no matter the odds. How to Develop Resilience and Adaptability To round out today’s newsletter, I dug around for some tried-and-true methods of boosting your self-reliance. Here are some practical tips for developing resilience and adaptability: 1. Use Expressive Writing. , expressive writing is about allowing yourself to regurgitate past events onto paper. Backed by science For example, you might think back to a difficult situation and write out every emotion and thought you associate with it. Next, you reflect by writing the positives that came out of the experience. Hindsight is 20/20 — and by forcing yourself to acknowledge the good, you find solid proof of your ability to bounce back from hardship. 2. Do Something You’d Never Try Unprompted. No, I don’t mean try a new dessert or read a book that intimidates you a little. I mean, find an activity so far out of your comfort zone that it’s hardly even on your radar. Not athletic? Join a team sport. Never had to speak in public in your life? Try toastmasters. If you fail, it builds character and resilience. If you find out that it’s your new calling, you build self-confidence in knowing that you adapted to something new. 3. Dig Into Your Childhood. Whether you faced adversity as a child or not, it’s always valuable to know your roots. Where do your deepest fears stem from? What’s your attachment style? How did your parents and upbringing influence your level of self-confidence? There’s nothing so freeing as understanding yourself properly. It’s intimidating if you’ve never looked inward before; you may even struggle to keep attending sessions after you hit the first few sore subjects. But you will understand your motives, and in doing so, find a path to greater self-confidence. 4. Separate Your Identity From Success. A huge barrier to taking risks is the fear of failure. I’ve talked about it in my newsletter before, and I’ll keep talking about it. Our relationship with success and failure determines our ability to take risks and bet on ourselves. Whether you do this through therapy, meditation, or research, detach your identity from your success. Understand that even the most capable people fail. Successful entrepreneurs aren’t ‘better’ than the ones who fail; most of the time, they are the people who kept trying after failure. The Outcome of Betting on Yourself If you go without self-confidence for long enough, you don’t feel the need to change or embolden yourself. Life is safe — your risks are calculated. There’s no need to change because you haven’t been hit with failure. But you also haven’t been hit with true success or as much success as you could have achieved. We’ve all got invisible ceilings over our heads that stop us from reaching our highest potential. Here are some limits you might not have even realized were there: You don’t embark on a business venture if no one agrees to partner it with you You only brainstorm ideas within your area of expertise — even if other areas intrigue you Your ideas are variations on other people’s concepts because your original ideas ‘will never work’ You only cold call prospects if you know they’re in the market for your product There are certain VC firms or investors you won’t approach because they ‘only fund the unicorns’ You stay in unsatisfying jobs for a long time rather than trying new things Any of those hitting home? I feel them, too. It’s so easy to overlook these little ceilings, but they prevent us from believing in our own potential and taking critical chances. Betting on yourself means there’s no limit to the things you can try. Wrap-Up Regardless of how you grew up, remember that the skills of a confident entrepreneur can always be learned. Trust in your own judgment, and make those bold decisions that move you in the direction you want to go. What a difference two years and a pandemic can make. In 2020, Disney CEO Bob Chapek in order to focus on streaming content. The creation of the Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution (DMED) organization under Disney’s Kareem Daniel was widely seen ( ) as a bold way to save the company. After all: reorganized its media and entertainment divisions and praised by writers such as me The pandemic had shut down its theme parks and movie theaters, closing off a huge source of revenue for in-person entertainment. The Disney+ streaming service, launched in late 2019 under Chapek’s predecessor Bob Iger, pointed to a hopeful future. Sure, no one expected Disney+ to be profitable until 2024. But with so many people turning online during lockdown living, the New Hollywood streaming industry seemed like an unstoppable force. And thus, the newera was born. Well, by November 2022, the era had ended. Disney+ was hemorrhaging cash to the tune of $8 billion in losses since its launch, alarming stock analysts. And, perhaps just as worse for a business fueled by creativity, the centralized DMED organization was clashing with Disney creatives. In a shocking move, Disney’s board ousted Chapek. Bob Iger, who had retired after serving as CEO for 15 years, was back. On his return, Iger announced that DMED would be reorganized and that creative control would be returned to the creatives instead of being centralized. And Kareem Daniel was ousted. The changing of the guard has sent the entertainment world buzzing with speculation about the future of the entire Disney brand under Bob Iger, including close scrutiny of Disney+. The management of the New Hollywood streaming service was certainly not the only reason for Bob Chapek’s fall from grace, but it played a big role – notably the ugly lawsuit that erupted between Disney and Scarlett Johansson when Disney elected to stream directly on Disney+ and skip a theatrical release. Black Widow We all know Bob Iger has many issues to address now, such as the pricing of the Disney theme parks. The two that fascinate me will determine the future of New Hollywood: content and commerce. A Focus on Family-Friendly Content? Under Bob Chapek’s watch, Disney+ produced some of its most popular titles , including and the second season of . according to Nielsen viewing data Loki The Mandalorian Disney+ also began to air R-rated content, including movies such as , , and Deadpool Logan Deadpool 2. As noted, Disney+ incurred enormous costs under Chapek, but the subscriber growth cannot be denied either: 12.1 million subscribers worldwide in the quarter that ended on Oct. 1, including 1.9 million in the United States and Canada, lifting its total count to 164.2 million. Disney now finds itself in a content arms race with its New Hollywood competitors, most notably Amazon and Netflix. Between Disney+ and Hulu, Disney spent about $15 billion on content in 2022, with Netflix spending about $17 billion, and Amazon, $14 billion, . In his first town hall with employees, Bob Iger said that Disney’s focus must shift toward making its streaming business profitable, rather than concentrating on simply adding subscribers. according to an IndieWire estimate So, what will Bob Iger do? Will he scale back content spend, and, if so, how? One option: focus on family-friendly, multigenerational content on Disney+ instead of opening up the platform for more R-rated content. With Disney taking complete ownership of Hulu (it’s set to buy out its share of Hulu in 2024 or earlier), the company could rely on Hulu for the content geared toward grown-ups. It’s interesting to note that immediately upon Iger’s return, Michael Nathanson of MoffettNathanson, urged Disney+ to focus on family-friendly content. And Trip Miller, a Disney investor and managing partner at hedge fund Gullane Capital Partners, told CNN Business. “This consumer is family-friendly, global and multi-generational. That’s the beauty of Disney, right? It’s not just kids, it’s not just adults. When it’s working, it can be everybody.” A family-friendly focus was certainly Iger’s original vision for Disney+. A good example: , which was a hit coming right out the gate in 2019 because it built off the brand power of the Star Warsfranchise and introduced a storyline that demonstrated how family-friendly content can thrill and excite with a compelling story. The Mandalorian Of course, competitors such as Netflix are succeeding with mature content such as Netflix’s . But Iger does not want Disney+ to be another Netflix. The educated guess here is that the future of Disney+ will be multigenerational. As he wrote in his farewell letter to employees (or at least we thought it was farewell) in 2021: Dahmer Most important, never lose sight of what makes The Walt Disney Company such an incredibly special place… our unique culture marked by a shared sense of belonging, joy, camaraderie, and the pride that comes with doing what we do, and that is bringing people from different generations, ethnicities, and backgrounds together with our exceptional storytelling. Whatever happens to Disney+ next, creativity will be rewarded. In a staff email on his return, Iger wrote that he will implement organizational and operating changes to restructure things in a way that “honors and respects creativity as the heart and soul of who we are.” Indeed, when he retired in 2021, he warned Disney executives “In a world and business that is awash with data, it is tempting to use data to answer all of our questions, including creative questions. I urge all of you not to do that.” If Disney had relied too heavily on data, he noted, the company might never have made big, breakthrough movies like and . Black Panther Coco But that was 2021. The days of “growing streaming at any cost” are over for Wall Street. Iger needs to right the ship and satisfy impatient investors. Oh, and we’re entering a recession if we’re not in one already. He’ll need to make some decisions quickly to recoup costs and generate more revenue on top of whatever Disney+ earns from its ad tier. Whatever he does, Iger has already spoken by dismantling the centralized approach to content creation. Since creativity is the heart and soul of the Disney brand, returning power to the creatives could unleash a renaissance. Disney Prime? Disney, like every company that owns a streaming service, needs to monetize its audience even more than Disney has been doing for decades with Disney entertainment and theme parks. So, Disney, like everyone else, is introducing an advertising tier. But under Bob Chapek, Disney had also been trying to figure out ways to create cross-promotional opportunities for Disney+ subscribers – and Bob Iger may very well stay the course here. For instance, , Disney launched a campaign to offer Disney+ subscribers a 20 discount on Walt Disney World lodging. in September And Disney+ subscribers can now unlock special deals on the Shop Disney website. In November, Disney announced a more ambitious pilot program to offer themed themed merchandise alongside certain Disney+ shows and films. For a limited time, Disney offered exclusive access to new products tied to franchises like , , and . The items included light saber collectibles and themed clothing available only on Disney+ profiles in the United States that were verified as belonging to users who are 18 and older. Star Wars Black Panther Frozen The company also seeks use data collected on fans during visits to Disney parks (e.g., what rides they ride the most) to curate offerings on their Disney+ accounts. , this could amount to an Amazon Prime type of experience – or a membership program with perks. As The Wall Street Journal reported Disney already has a special program for superfans, , which costs $99.99 to $129.99 a year and comes with access to exclusive events and merchandise. But what Disney is considering now is a membership program for more casual fans, nicknamed Disney Prime inside the company. the D23 Official Fan Club Kristina Schake, senior executive vice president and chief communications officer at Disney, told , ““Technology is giving us new ways to customize and personalize the consumer experience so that we are delivering entertainment, experiences and products that are most relevant to each of our guests.  A membership program is just one of the exciting ideas that is being explored.” The Wall Street Journal , Chapek told attendees of ‘s Tech Live conference, “When a family comes to our parks, we know exactly what you did. Let’s say you stay a week. We got seven days, 24 hours a day. We know everything that you do in the park. And if you give us the permission and ability through the membership app, we’ll program your Disney+ experience, not according to what you watched last or what other people who watch this show, but to what you did, what you experienced.” In October The Wall Street Journal So, for instance, someone who rode the ride, would then find -themed titles highlighted on their home page of Disney+ upon log-in. Pirates of the Caribbean Pirates The “Disney Prime” label doesn’t quite ring true when it evokes a comparison to Amazon. Amazon Prime members get access to Amazon Prime Video. Similarly, Walmart+ members get access to Paramount+. But Amazon and Walmart are different businesses than Disney. They are retailers who want to sell a bunch of products, and entertainment exists to be a pull-through for products. Disney is foremost an entertainment company that maximizes the value of its content through merchandise sales. Instead, for Disney, a Prime membership would need to attract members first through great entertainment and experiences whether via Disney+, theme parks, lodging, Disney cruises, and the metaverse that Disney envisions. Disney won’t build brand love by selling things. Disney will build brand love by offering lovable experiences. All businesses now want to maximize the value of first-party data they collect from their customers, especially at a time when third-party data becomes less valuable in the era of consumer privacy. Regardless of whether Disney launches a membership program, it seems likely that under the Bob Iger era, cross-promotion based on mining first-party data will continue. It has to for Disney+ to become profitable. But, under Chapek, Disney received increasingly harsh criticism for treating its customers like products, . Disney is already milking its loyal customers with higher prices to theme parks and increased Disney+ subscriptions costs. as this poignantly written editorial discusses Will Bob Iger find a way to build on Chapek’s work? If so, my educated guess again is that he’ll focus on creating extended experiences and talk less about selling products. He was reportedly alarmed by the rising prices for admission to Disney theme parks that were imposed under Bob Chapek. I believe he will try to inject magic back into theme parks, and synchronized experiences with Disney+ will be one way to do that. It’s going to be a crucial time for Disney to figure out the interplay between content and commerce without treating people like products.

Will Disney+ Create Magic through Profitable Content and Commerce?

Remember when Warner Brothers announced that it will release its entire 2021 slate of films simultaneously in movie theaters and the HBO Max streaming service? The move sounded like a bold action to save Old Hollywood from the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic, when movie theaters were shut down, and streaming was practically the only way to see movies. Not so fast. Old Hollywood over-reached. Too many movies were dumped on to streaming services during the worst of the pandemic. True, simultaneous in-theater and streaming releases were understandable. No one was going to movie theaters as the pandemic raged. But partly as a result of the pandemic-era release strategy, the film industry now faces a shortage of movies available to exhibit in theaters. In 2021, that with major Hollywood studios paring back their release calendars (or shipping movies to their own streaming services) theater chains were expecting to be short of programming for at least three years. We’re now seeing the outcome as Thanksgiving Week 2022 . Usually, Thanksgiving Week produces a bumper crop of new movies, . Fortunately, Walt Disney’s November 11 release , . All told, the number of releases on 2,000 screens or more is down by 36 percent. But people are returning to theaters in 2022. , total gross sales are nearing $6.6 billion in 2022, up nearly 50 percent from 2021 (but still about $5 billion short of 2019 sales). In fact, two movies released in recent months – and – . But there are just not as many movies to see in theaters. Box Office Mojo reports there have been 442 releases in 2022, compared to 993 in 2019; on a per-movie basis, the average gross is at its highest mark since 2010. But ironically, the Old Hollywood film distribution system might receive a boost from streaming companies. The Wall Street Journal reported experiences a shortfall of available movies but only four movies have hit theaters in 2022, and none has produced impressive results Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been a monster hit According to Box Office Mojo Spider-Man: No Way Home Top Gun: Maverick are among the 15 highest grossing movies of all time New Hollywood “Knives Out” for Netflix In an interesting move, to exhibit in movie theaters during Thanksgiving Week before going dark until December 23, when the film will re-appear on Netflix exclusively. Netflix won’t release financial results for , . By contrast, Disney’s Thanksgiving release was on track to make about $24 million during Thanksgiving Week – but the movie was distributed across 4,174 theaters. Netflix agreed with movie theaters Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Glass Onion but it’s estimated to have raked in $14.5 million during its one-week showing in only 638 theaters Strange World Is a lost opportunity to make even more for Netflix? In fact, there is ample evidence to suggest that New Hollywood should release movies in theaters first in order to build buzz for streaming releases. For instance, earned $750 million globally before Warner Brothers premiered the film the HBO Max streaming service. then enjoyed a first-week viewership of an estimated 4.1 million households (per Samba TV) – the second best first-week for a theatrical release on HBO Max. Glass Onion The Batman The Batman With Netflix releasing on about one movie a week for viewers at home, the potential for gaining more revenue streams is big. Netflix, to date, has resisted exhibiting movies in theaters first.  But amid an economic downturn , Netflix must surely be tempted to rethink its strategy going into 2023. and a harsh year for New Hollywood A Big Move for Amazon? Even more significantly, that Amazon plans to spend $1 billion a year on theatrical film releases in 2023. Amazon seeks to make between 12 and 15 movies annually that will get a theatrical release. In 2023, Amazon will release a handful of films and increase its output over time. (That number of releases puts Amazon on a par with major studios such as Paramount Pictures.) it was reported recently To date, Amazon has been steadily getting into the movie business over a period of years by purchasing titles and releasing them under the Amazon Studios name. It earned Academy Award nominations for and , which were modest box office successes. Recently Amazon announced its intent to become major movie studio to be reckoned . The Big Sick Manchester by the Sea with when the company purchased MGM The news about Amazon making titles for theatrical release will spark an . Well, it’s clear that one way or another, New Hollywood streaming companies are expanding their presence through the Old Hollywood distribution system, too. (Of course, New Hollywood/Old Hollywood hybrid Disney is already there.) ongoing conversation about Amazon potentially buying theaters A few New Hollywood companies actually own theaters: Netflix owns the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, and the Paris Theater in New York. Disney owns the El Capitan Hollywood theater, where it plays its own movies. Owning a limited number of brick-and-mortar theaters gives New Hollywood a means to hold special events and build buzz for major releases without competing with chains. But would it make sense for a streaming company to expand even further?  I could see movie theaters becoming cash cows for Amazon to hustle its private label brands in the lobbies and offer special rewards for Prime members. The time may or may not be right for Amazon given the economic headwinds the company faces right now. But then again, theater chains are still hurting financially. And Amazon is clearly moving into brick-and-mortar industries such as retailing (most notably via the acquisition of Whole Foods a few years ago). Will Amazon make a move? As for Warner Brothers: the company dropped its simultaneous movie/streaming strategy (known as day-and-date releases) for 2022 releases. This was a wise strategy given that ’s phenomenal success. Moviegoing ain’t dead by any means. In fact, it’s quite possible that movie going is being reborn into a new kind of experience where theatrical exhibits drive buzz for the streaming release.
