Artificial intelligence (AI) is the rave of the moment. It has rapidly transformed numerous industries, promising efficiency, convenience, and innovation. However, beneath its shiny facade is something I am quite worried about; bias. In this article, we will explore the underlying mechanisms of bias in AI, its implications, and actionable steps to mitigate this bias in your AI projects. The Nature of Bias in AI: To grasp how bias seeps into AI, we must first understand how AI works. To put it loosely, AI algorithms analyze vast amounts of data, discern patterns, and determine the “best” answers based on correlations it discovers. Essentially, AI models heavily rely on the data they are trained on and the outcomes associated with that data. Bias can enter AI through two main avenues: and itself. Both of these factors are influenced by the individuals or teams responsible for developing AI systems. Often, bias creeps in unconsciously, perpetuating societal prejudices and inequalities. the training data the training process An example of bias in AI that I find interesting is one that we explored in the AI for Business program at Wharton. The case study was focused on a recruitment algorithm created by Amazon. The algorithm, designed to streamline the hiring process, was trained on a decade’s worth of applicant data, much of which came from male candidates. Over time, the system developed a clear preference for male applicants, essentially teaching itself that they were more desirable. Even more concerning was the fact that the algorithm began penalizing resumes containing the term “women.” Although attempts were made to rectify the bias, it became apparent that the system was unreliable and could not be trusted for fair decision-making. A more personal experience is something we experienced while building , an online dating platform for Africans. We tried to combat fake users and impersonation by using AI to compare live user photos with their profile pictures. Our first approach was to look for an off-the-shelf solution however, we encountered a significant issue — the AI solutions we explored yielded about a 40% higher rate of false positives for photos of people of colour, which constituted 95% of our user base. i.e it frequently said 2 people of colour who looked nothing alike were the same person. Vybe Upon investigation, we discovered that most facial recognition AI models, including those used by prominent dating companies like Tinder and Bumble, were predominantly trained on photos of Caucasians. Consequently, these models were more prone to errors when processing images of people of colour, perpetuating bias. Why should you care about bias in AI? They can lead to discriminatory practices, reinforce stereotypes, and hinder opportunities for certain groups. It is essential to address and mitigate bias in AI to ensure fairness, equal representation, and a more inclusive future where technology serves as a tool for empowerment rather than a source of discrimination. Mitigating Bias in AI: Fortunately, there are actionable steps we can take to remove unconscious bias from AI systems and ensure a fair and equitable future. Consider the following approaches: : Reducing bias in AI begins with ensuring that the data used to train the models is diverse and representative of the real-world population it serves. This requires collecting data from various sources and guaranteeing its accuracy in reflecting the diversity of the population. Use diverse and representative training data : Establishing fairness metrics for AI systems is crucial to prevent discrimination against any particular group. These metrics can ensure that the model maintains equal accuracy across different racial groups, genders, or other relevant attributes. Examples of fairness metrics are Statistical parity difference, Implement fairness metrics : Regularly auditing AI models is essential to identify and correct any bias-related issues that may arise. External AI bias audit firms or AI model auditing software can be employed to analyze model predictions and compare them to ground truth data, unveiling bias patterns requiring rectification. These new platforms share a few commonalities: They’re accessible to everyone, not only existing businesses and professionals They view individuality as a feature, not a bug They focus on digital products and virtual services They provide holistic tools to grow and operate a business They open doors to new forms of work 1. They’re accessible to everyone, not only existing businesses and professionals New consumer products are making it easy for anyone to become an entrepreneur. In the mid-2010s, the rise of the influencer industry allowed top-tier creators to monetize through advertising. These platforms expanded to support a broader range of money-making activities, from manufacturing physical products (e.g. Vybes, Hipdot, Genflow) to creating personalized videos (Cameo, VIPVR, Celeb VM). Now the ability to make a living off creative skills has trickled down to individuals at scale, helping everyday people to launch and grow businesses. Previously, only established businesses could access software engineering talent to build websites or apps; now, no-code website and app builders like Webflow and Glide have democratized that ability. Startups are also building mobile-first, lightweight versions of incumbent desktop software: Kapwing, for instance, is a web and mobile editor for videos, GIFs, and images that aims to displace legacy creative software. Companies have the opportunity to engage entrepreneurs in the early stages, then capture economic value as they grow. For instance, Prenda—a managed marketplace of K-8 microschools—provides teachers (called Guides) with curricula, computers, software, supplies, and assistance in navigating the necessary regulatory requirements and insurance. 5. They open doors to new forms of work entirely New digital platforms enable forms of work we’ve never seen before: For a more extensive model of how human capital can give rise to new industries, look to China. Really? So you're just going to open anyway? I really wanted you to skip this one. I was busy travelling, and I had nothing to write. Came back from an 18 hour flight and kept thinking of what to write, but I couldn’t. So I figured I would ask for a favor and have you pass this one. Yet here we are.. So thanks for that.. What I am supposed to do now? Let me think. Oh— You know what? I have a quick story to tell. I was visiting my brother on a small and (very) remote island of French Polynesia called Nuku Hiva. So small, in fact, that it doesn’t even appear on the map unless you zoom wayyy in. Don’t believe me? The point is, it’s a small airport, and you have to walk yourself to the terminal. They have cones that tell you where to walk, but most importantly, where they don’t want you to walk past. On the way in, I was tired from my long journey there. I just followed the line. On the way out, I was feeling a little more like myself. I saw these cones again. And they saw me. They were lined up like soldiers, proudly wearing bright orange. Probably to show off, and also form a contrast to the tarmac. The cones seemed to stare back at me with a challenge. I am pretty sure they were whispering “Go ahead, step over. We dare you.” Wait. What? I looked at them. My pulse quickened immediately. I was being challenged. “What do you mean you dare me to step over? Do you even know me? I can do whatever I want.” I glance around. Everyone else is obediently tracing the path to the plane. Not me. The impulse takes over. I step over the cone barrier, and my foot lands on the other side.. They come across a mushroom, bright red with white spots—pretty much screaming, "Don't touch me bro". But, curiosity and defiance? It's built-in. So, someone had to take the first bite, right? And you can bet they regretted it right after. That’s the kind of trial and error that taught everyone else to steer clear of the fancy fungi. But not all explorations ended badly. Sometimes, they found new, nourishing foods. These foods became staples in their diet. It makes me wonder about the first person who discovered fire—what an intense moment that must have been. Anyway, just some food for thought on your own terms. Fast forward to today. This system still urges us to push boundaries and explore new possibilities. This is true even when we’re safe from saber-toothed tigers. This legacy influences everything. It affects how we approach challenges. References III. PROPOSED RESEARCH METHODOLOGY This section proposes a novel sparse Bayesian hierarchical method: clustering and spatially correlated sparse Bayesian learning (CSSBL). Etherium's is still the most popular by far, launching with the blockchain in 2015. However, there are many others worth mentioning for any new use cases you might have for your smart contracts. Many smart contracts involve multiple independent parties that have a very limited relationship and even less trust. The smart contract they use to interact will define exactly how, when, and where each party can interact with the transaction and what the results will be for any given input. This creates a multi-party digital agreement that executes automatically when everyone involved in the transaction has met the right conditions. Smart Contracts in Action Some key uses of smart contracts involve automating business processes and transactions between several entities. This means they can automate payments, process flow, and dispute resolutions to create highly efficient processes that minimize time, risk, and costs to every business. For example, a smart contract that governs global supply and trade might have just a couple of simple terms such as: If the product arrives on time, execute payment from retailer to supplier in the full amount. Condition 1: If the product arrives late, then execute partial payment from the retailer to the supplier for 95% of the full amount. Condition 2: Of course, this is a simplified trivial example but there are any number of supplier and customer relationships that can benefit from this technology without relying on intermediate payment processors. Another type of smart contract utilizes decentralized applications that provide interaction across the board without explicitly setting up permissions. Public distributed apps are typically open-source code that can be widely scrutinized to avoid any security concerns. One example of this type of application is a lending/borrowing market that works on the following terms: If a user deposits collateral into a specific smart contract, they will be issued a loan for some value of their posted collateral. Term 1: If the user’s collateralization ratio (collateral/outstanding loan value) drops below 200%, then the user’s collateral is automatically liquidated and transferred to the lender. Term 2: Lenders can deposit funds into a specific contract that other users can borrow from at predefined collateralization ratios, while the lender receives a claim to a portion of the interest rate payments. Term 3: Using these automated methods creates a fair and transparent method of lending that doesn't rely on a third party or central authority with a monopoly on terms and conditions. What this means in practice is that well-designed smart contracts can eliminate counterparty risk, and make it impossible for either party to renege on the terms of a deal, or fail to fulfill their contractual obligations. However, smart contracts are open instead to another kind of risk. Smart contract risk introduces the possibility that the code defining the contract has an inherent flaw or exploit that leads to undesirable outcomes. To guard against this, smart contracts have to be carefully looked over and well-understood by all parties before proceeding with the agreed-upon transaction. Benefits and Limitations to Smart Contracts Smart contracts offer a safer and more verifiable way of creating, maintaining, and upholding agreements in both B2B and B2C spaces. They offer data security and guarantees that can't be made any other way — creating something of a paradigm shift to come. However, the blockchain landscape is still relatively new for many, and smart contracts have yet to be proven at the kind of scale we're used to associating with high degrees of trust and authority. In short, we've still to get to know them fully to understand the risks and advantages they bring to a project. So let's take a look at what they can deliver into the project today and what we should currently guard against before we begin using them. Benefits of Smart Contracts When the conditions of a smart contract are met it is executed immediately without question. By shifting to an automated digital way of working there's no processing time (or fees), time spent checking, fixing, and re-issuing after errors, and nothing is ever lost or broken through manual processing. Speed, efficiency, and accuracy. Without the need to bring a third party into the transaction and an encrypted public record is shared — there's no question over whether documents have been altered or truncated at any stage in the process. Trust and Transparency. Blockchain records are public, shared, and immutable, meaning they can't be changed after the fact and have no single point of weakness. Each record in the chain is connected and verified by the last, making it impossible to change past transactions for malicious gain. Security. Smart contracts don't need intermediaries to execute so there are no fees or costs for handling or verification. As a result, smart contracts are the cheapest and fastest way to handle transactions. Cost-Effective. Limitations of Smart Contracts The strongest security feature of a smart contract is also one of its biggest limitations. By being immutable, any bugs or problems in the code can't be changed at any time after the contract has been issued. Any changes in external conditions or demands of the business can only ever be reflected in a new smart contract. Immutability. It's crucial that all parties involved in a smart contract understand its conditions and know how to scrutinize it. Bugs, whether introduced innocently or maliciously, can have severe consequences when executed. Every party on the contract needs to know how the code works and what it's going to do when executed. Complexity. Most smart contracts rely on external data for their preconditions. However, this data isn't accessible directly on the blockchain. Smart contracts have to rely on external services (oracles) to retrieve information outside the blockchain — introducing an element of third-party trust, reliability, and verification into some smart contracts. Oracle Dependency. Five Key Applications for Smart Contracts In truth, we're only just scratching the surface of what smart contracts can provide for organizations in the future. The creativity, innovation, and capabilities of developers can always be depended on to push the boundaries ever further to build ever more capable solutions to everyday business challenges. Five of the most innovative ways smart contracts are being used in organizations right now include: 1. Decentralised Finance (DeFi) Smart contracts enable decentralized lending, borrowing, and trading without the need for intermediaries within the transaction. There are already a host of DeFi platforms like and set up to allow decentralized transactions using smart contracts today. Compound aave 2. Insurance One of the largest and most profitable industries that smart contracts could revolutionize overnight is insurance. Based on the majority of state-of-the-art meme classifiers, the current literature suggests that these different tasks do not require architecturally distinct solutions (Hazman et al., 2023). Broadly, two general architectural approaches exist among multimodal meme affective classifiers: first, multi-encoder models that use multiple pretrained unimodal encoders which are then fused prior to classification – numerous examples are summarised by Sharma et al. (2020) and Patwa et al. (2022). These models use both a text encoder and an image encoder that were each trained in unimodal self-supervised and unsupervised tasks such as BERT or SentenceTransformer for text, and VGG-19 or RESNET50 for images. In contrast, single-encoder models are based on a pretrained multimodal vision-and-language model, most often a transformer that has been pretrained on multimodal tasks and accepts both modalities as a single input. The single-encoder approach (Muennighoff, 2020; Zhu, 2020) reuses models that have been pretrained on multimodal tasks such as VLBERT, UNITER, ERNIE-ViL, DeVLBERT and VisualBERT. There is little empirical evidence to show that one architectural approach consistently outperforms the other in the various meme classification tasks. Typically, both multi- and single-encoder architectures use transfer learning by finetuning pretrained models on a dataset of labelled memes. While pretraining is often assumed to yield performance benefits for meme classification tasks, this has not been exhaustively proven, especially when viewed relative to studies in image- and textonly tasks (Jiang et al., 2022). Multimodally pretrained baseline models for the Hateful Memes dataset (Kiela et al., 2020) outperformed their unimodally pretrained counterparts. Suryawanshi et al. (2020) showed that the use of pretrained weights did not consistently provide performance benefits to their image-only classifiers of trolling behaviour in Tamil code-mixed memes. Although the use of pretrained encoders is common amongst meme sentiment classifiers (Sharma et al., 2022; Bucur et al., 2022; Pramanick et al., 2021a; Sharma et al., 2020; Patwa et al., 2022), there is little evidence as to whether pretrained representations are suitable for the downstream task or if an encoder’s performance in classifying unimodal input transfers to classifying multimodal memes. Beyond using pretrained image and text encoders, several recent works have attempted to incorporate external knowledge into meme classifiers. Some employed additional encoders to augment the image modality representation such as human faces (Zhu, 2020; Hazman et al., 2023), while others have incorporated image attributes (including entity recognition via a large knowledge base) (Pramanick et al., 2021b), cross-modal positional information (Shang et al., 2021; Hazman et al., 2023), social media interactions (Shang et al., 2021), and image captioning (Blaier et al., 2021). To our knowledge, no published attempts have been made to directly incorporate unimodal sentiment analysis data into a multimodal meme classifier. 2.2 Supplementary Training of Meme Classifiers Several recent works addressed the lack of labelled multimodal memes by incorporating additional non-meme data. Sharma et al. (2022) presents two self-supervised representation learning approaches to learn the “semantically rich cross-modal feature[s]” needed in various meme affective classification tasks. They finetuned an image and a text encoder on image-with-caption tweets before fitting these representations on to several multimodal meme classification tasks including sentiment, sarcasm, humour, offence, motivationality, and hate speech. These approaches showed performance improvement on some, but not all, tasks. In some cases, their approach underperfomed in comparison to the more typical supervised finetuning approaches. Crucially, since the authors did not compare their performance to that of the same architecture without the self-supervised step, isolating performance gains directly attributable to this step is challenging. Furthermore, while the authors reported multiple tasks where their approach performed best while training on only 1% of the available memes, their included training curves imply that these performance figures were selected at the point of maximum performance on the testing set during training. This differs from the typical approach of early stopping based on performance on a separately defined validation set, which hinders direct comparisons to competing solutions. Bucur et al. (2022) proposed a multitask learning approach that simultaneously trained a classifier on different meme classification tasks – sentiment, sarcasm, humour, offence, motivationality – for the same meme inputs. Their results showed that multitask learning underperformed in the binary detection of humour, sarcasm, and offensiveness. This approach was found to be only effective in predicting the intensity of sarcasm and offensiveness of a meme. However, in sentiment classification, this multitask approach showed inconsistent results. Although multitask learning did not improve the performance of their text-only classifier, their multitask multimodal classifier offers the best reported results on the Memotion 2.0 sentiment classification task to date. To the best of our knowledge, only one previous work used unimodal inputs to supplement training of multimodal meme classifiers. Suryawanshi et al.’s (2020) initial benchmarking of the TamilMemes dataset showed that the inclusion of unimodal images improved the performance of their ResNet-based image-only model in detecting trolling behaviour in Tamil memes. The authors augmented their dataset of memes with images collected from Flickr; by assigning these images as not containing trolling language. They found that this augmentation with 1,000 non-meme images decreased the performance of their classifier. With 30,000 images, their classifier performed identically to one that only used pretrained weights and supervised training on memes; both were outperformed by their model that did not use either pretrained weights or data augmentations. Existing supplementary approaches to improve meme classification performance have shown mixed results. Notably, the observations made in these works were measured only once and were not accompanied by statistical significance tests, necessitating caution when drawing conclusions on their effectiveness. Step Towards Sci-Fi: AI and BCI Insights From SXSW

Giving feedback to your manager can be tricky. What if they don’t like what you say? What if they take it the wrong way? What if they turn against you? People refuse to give candid feedback to their managers because they don’t want to put their jobs at risk. This prevents most managers from getting an accurate picture of how others view them, often creating a huge gap between perception and reality. When you don’t share what they need to hear, don’t expect your manager to improve or blame them for repeating behaviors and actions that hurt their team and impact your productivity and performance. Just like your manager is expected to share constant feedback to help you learn and grow, you also need to contribute to your manager's growth. All managers have blind spots—unknowns that are in their circle of awareness (known unknowns) and things they don’t even know (unknown unknowns). There are lurking gaps in how they see themselves (or their actions) and how others perceive them leading to inadvertent blind spots. This is further exacerbated by their past beliefs, experiences, upbringing and many other psychological factors. Without reconciling reality, these blind spots perpetuate disconnect and dissonance with people. It may be uncomfortable at first to tell your manager what they’re doing wrong—you’ve to fight your fears and resist your instinct to avoid dealing with them. But with practice and experience, you’ll get better at it. Your courage will inspire others to do it too, contributing to a healthy workplace with a feedback rich environment. When you give yourself permission to communicate what matters to you in every situation you will have peace despite rejection or disapproval. Putting a voice to your soul helps you to let go of the negative energy of fear and regret. — Shannon L. Alder Help your managers become better leaders by giving them the feedback they need. Follow these practices to ensure your feedback lands right: Check whether they’re receptive to feedback Giving feedback to your manager is risky, no doubt. That’s why you shouldn’t do it without gauging whether they’re receptive to it. Toxic managers will not react poorly to your feedback; they will hold it against you. These managers believe in power structures where feedback is expected to flow only in one direction—from top to bottom. They take feedback personally as it hurts their ego and question their place in the hierarchy. They are blind to their flaws and refuse to address them. Instead of treating feedback as a gift, they treat it as a slap in the face. To determine if your manager is open to feedback, start with a low-stakes situation and identify how they react to it. Share your feedback on a very small matter—do they show curiosity to learn more about the feedback, or do they shut you down? How do they behave afterward—show resentment or appreciate you? Starting small also makes it easier when you have some critical feedback to share. Once you’ve built trust and relationships with the manager by sharing small improvement areas, they will be more open-minded when you have something big or bold to say. Don’t waste your time and energy on a manager who treats feedback as a one-way street. It’s time to change teams or find another job if they aren’t receptive to feedback and their behavior is getting in the way of your growth. State your intentions When you don’t state your intentions explicitly, others are bound to create a story around it—that’s just how the human mind works. Intentions are invisible. We assume them from other people’s behavior. In other words, we make them up, we invent them. But our invented stories about other people’s intentions are accurate much less often than we think. — Douglas Stone Intentions play a big role in how your feedback is received. When you are judgmental and opinionated, when you argue and attack their story, when you tell them how to do their job, your manager is more likely to get defensive than to explore your point of view. \When you show up with the intent to ask questions, make suggestions, raise concerns, challenge ideas, and find better ways to work together, or help them improve, they are more likely to take your feedback positively and may even decide to act on it. Don’t let your manager play a guessing game—clearly state your intention. For example, you may say: My intent is to find better ways to communicate so that we can avoid communication gaps. *My intent is to find the best possible solution. I want to discuss how we can encourage more disagreements in the team.* My intent is to get more visibility around my work. Can we discuss how you can enable this for me as a manager? Explicitly stating what you desire from the conversation and why you’re approaching them prevents them from attaching their own meaning. They can focus on the solution when they know you have their best intentions at heart. Frame it right Your manager has hundreds of things to do, most of which are not visible to you. It’s very important for you to realize that you may not have all the context to understand why your manager behaved a certain way in a particular situation unless you’re actually doing your manager's job. So, instead of judgment, lead with observation. Leave room for understanding and curiosity. Don’t draw conclusions from your limited interactions with your manager, and treat them as a source of truth. How you frame the feedback determines the reaction and response you get. Framing that involves blame, complaining, or a judgmental tone can never get you the outcomes you desire. If you want your feedback to be received well, frame it right—describe the situation followed by your observation (without judgment and opinion), then state the impact as you see it with an open-ended question to get their perspective. Talking about the impact their behavior has on others and how it prevents them from achieving their goals makes it much easier to understand. Ending with an open-ended question invites them to share how they view the situation or what they can do to help.
