The main struggle stemmed from the elevated experiences associated with transporting goods from factories in China to distribution centers in the US. The customer maintained numerous warehouses and sales points across almost every state. Thus, determining the optimal routing posed a non-trivial task. In addition, it was crucial to consider the preferred transportation chain. Each product begins its journey in a shipping container from a Chinese seaport and travels the Pacific Ocean to reach a port in the United States, from where it continues its journey in a truck to the designated warehouse. Afterward, the product awaits last-mile delivery to the targeted distribution point. The customer wanted to have the following functionality: specify available warehouses; identify distribution points, with some automatically derived from historical data and others manually selected by the user; create a list of items along with their respective quantities; have a list of seaports. Finally, the client expressed a wish to be able to compare various methods of packing goods within shipping containers, either with or without pallets. The outcome of the optimization problem should yield the optimal transportation schedule and associated expense statistics. But before we dive into use case details, we will quickly outline a fundamental mathematical concept that is used in the intelligent solution. Integer Programming for Supply Chain Efficiency Integer (Linear) Programming (IP) is a mathematical optimization technique used to find the best solution to a problem with linear relationships while considering that either some or all the variables must take integer (whole number) values. The general form of an IP problem is to maximize (or minimize) a linear objective function subject to a set of linear constraints, where some or all the decision variables must be integers. The objective function is a linear combination of decision variables, and the constraints are linear inequalities or equalities that the variables must satisfy. The mathematical formulation of an IP problem can be expressed as follows: Values x₁, x₂, ..., xₙ are the decision variables, c₁, c₂, ..., cₙ are coefficients in the objective function, aᵢⱼ are coefficients in the constraint equations, and bᵢ are constants. The model can help in determining the optimal quantities to produce for each product to meet demand while minimizing costs. Production planning: IP models can be applied to optimize the overall structure of the supply chain network. Supply chain network optimization: IP models can incorporate demand forecasting data to optimize production and distribution decisions while aligning supply chain operations to anticipated customer demand, reducing the risk of overstock or stockouts. Demand planning: Enhancing Supply Chain Logistics – ELEKS’ Solution Overview To meet our client's requirements, we created a system that leverages the benefits of the Integer Programming technique, which optimizes supply schedules, routes, and inventory levels for five kinds of items: ceramic sinks, toilets, bidets, gas valves, and bathtub mixers (corresponding HS codes are 6910.10.0030, 6910.10.0010, 6910.10.0025, 8414.90.1080, 7323.93.0080). The system comprises three main parts (or pages): configuration, simulation, and analytics. Each of them will be explained in the following paragraphs. To ensure the confidentiality of data and application details, we anonymized names and real locations, creating a prototype for a straightforward demo application that illustrates the efficacy of AI in addressing optimization challenges. Configuration Page The user can select available warehouses, distribution points, and desirable seaports to take part in final optimized routing. Also, the client can specify desirable goods and their respective amount to be transported to their customers. The last thing is the date picker, in case delivery is planned. The system will calculate remains inventory at the delivery date based on forecasted demand and allocate planned shipments aligned with warehouse residuals. Clicking the 'optimize' button does all the magic! It sets optimization tasks and launches its solution. After a few seconds, results can be observed on the remaining two pages. Simulation (Map) Page This page offers the client the opportunity to view an accurate simulation of the proposed model's solution. In prior discussions, we deliberated on the suitable INCOTERMS for our client and reached a consensus on CFR. The customer can specify the number of hours for each step and press the corresponding button to see the state of the supply chain in this amount of time. First of all, there are five types of points: two for transport vehicles (ship and truck) and three for seaports (orange), warehouses (purple), and distribution points (green). The map is interactive, meaning the user can hover over any point or connection and see the information related to that object. For example, blue lines connecting warehouses and distribution points show the last-mile delivery plan and contain information about how much each good is delivered daily. If the user hovers over the ship, the information about its capacity, container types, loaded amount of each good, and routing are displayed. Analytics Page This page features all the data and statistics about the model's proposed solution. The user can observe the delivery plan, where each ship and truck are, its estimated arrival time, route, and filling. There are also a bunch of charts, starting from the pie chart with expenses altogether and ending with heat maps of delivery costs between different seaports, warehouses, and distribution points. Additionally, the client can observe a price graph per good for different distribution points and, based on that data, make corresponding business decisions. Performance Metrics: ELEKS’ Solution vs Client’s Legacy System The next challenge was to test our solution in real-world scenarios and compare it to the client's approach. For this purpose, the client considered a period of 1 month. The main conditions of the task (such as available seaports, location, and number of warehouses and clusters) are observed in the illustrations in the previous paragraphs. As a result, our model's solution was more effective regarding operating expenses, average time of last-mile delivery, and reduced idle time of warehouses. 5.76% average monthly cost savings achieved by the client and 50% reduction in delivery time for some clusters. ELEKS Data Science team The data indicates that the utilization of our solution proved to be more advantageous for the client, resulting in a reduction in the price per item. This outcome can be attributed to various factors, with the primary ones being as follows: More intelligent goods distribution More optimal delivery network More efficient routing and warehousing For example, our solution featured some clusters for which the model suggests last-mile delivery for different goods from distinct warehouses (an explanation lies deeply in the delivery network, and our model spotted this optimization possibility). The distribution of goods between warehouses differed (mainly between warehouses in Washington and New York). At first sight, the differences are not so significant, but the result speaks for itself. Conclusions The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in supply chain management emerges as a critical component for businesses aiming to navigate the complexities of global logistics effectively. The multifaceted nature of modern supply chains, coupled with challenges such as disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and economic fluctuations, necessitates innovative solutions for achieving efficiency and resilience. The presented solution highlights AI's transformative role in streamlining supply chain managers' responsibilities and demonstrates the tangible benefits of AI and IP in supply chain logistics, showcasing a 5.76% average monthly cost savings, a 50% reduction in delivery time for some clusters. Its adaptability allows seamless adjustments, offering users access to a simulation studio, where they can execute various scenarios involving diverse items and quantities, facilitating a comparative analysis to determine optimal strategies for different situations. The World Wide Web, thank you Sir Tim, was conceived as a technology designed to be “ ” It has devolved from that into a (cyber)space of moated castles, Disneylandish . a powerful source for social change and individual creativity. cathedrals, not bazaars While very entertaining and very useful in many ways the hegemonic Web platforms present as artificial rather than organic, hierarchical rather than egalitarian. The Big Platforms are owned and managed by a handful of dominant, supervalued, companies. Prominent are Alphabet (Google’s parent) and Meta (Facebook’s parent). Low cost and high profit, they are great at informing and entertaining us. Meanwhile, however, in consequential ways they are beggaring those who provide the content and the users who consume that content. The top platforms are richly paid to channel advertising. To us. The Web has evolved into a massive, and massively profitable, advertising engine. As such, the Web now might be (and is becoming) seen as a form of de facto feudalism, digital imperialism, and digerati aristocracy. The attention of us billions of serfs is the product sold to advertisers. No coercion there. More like… seduction. Note, this critique does not imply a call for legislation or government regulation. Both tend to be blunt instruments that land much harder on startups than on the hegemons of the digital megaverse. It calls for transformation. Which will come, as always, , as Microsoft dethroned IBM, Google (partially) dethroned Microsoft, Facebook (partially) dethroned Google, Apple (partially) dethroned Facebook, and so forth. from more innovation How did we get here? Can we, and if so how can we, once again unleash the imprisoned lighting ( ) of the colonized Web to create a new golden age of innovation and equitable prosperity? h/t Emma Lazarus Enter the blockchain. First, though, who am I to judge? I am one of the few surviving Original Gangsters of the Supply Side/Reaganomics revolution. We, relentlessly mocked by the right (“voodoo economics”) and the left (“trickle-down economics”), got policies enacted that, over time , pushed the Dow from 814 (on that day in November 1979 that Reagan officially declared his candidacy for the presidency) to its current flirtation with 40,000. Our voodoo doubled real per capita GDP (from $30,000 to $60,000). It raised nominal American and world GDP by a factor of ten. Pretty good voodoo. That said, what’s the next act? The juice from the original equitable prosperity policy formula -- of stabilizing the dollar (slaying the inflation dragon for two generations and cutting the top marginal income tax rate from 70% to, initially, 28%) -- got wrung out around the time Bill Clinton left the building. I was and am enthusiastic about reducing counterproductively high marginal tax rates across-the-board. Yet much of what ensued in the name of supply-side during the 21st century is a cargo-cult version of supply-side’s successes of the ‘80s and ‘90s. The post-Reagan/Clinton grotesque caricature of authentic supply-side economics has left the economy limping for a generation. Cumulatively, over 20+ years, sub-par growth rates are crippling. They leave us with an economy, both national and personal, far lower than what consistent 3+% supply-side growth rates would have delivered over time. As , compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world.  A one or two percent differential compounded over 20 years makes a huge difference. Einstein probably never said Is there a new, plausible, way to re-ignite vibrant, widely shared, rising living standards? As Nobel Prize winner Paul Romer has pointed out, the secret sauce is innovation. Tech. Enter A16z’s , “a General Partner and has been at Andreessen Horowitz since 2012. He founded and leads a16z crypto, which invests in web3 technologies through four dedicated funds with more than $7 billion under management.” Chris Dixon Dixon has delivered a splendid new book . It lays out in clear, practical terms how the wild wild Web was lost. And how to set it right in such a way that everyone, including us serfs, can prosper. Read Write Own: Building the Next Era of the Internet As , prosperity is too important to be left to the economists. Enter Dixon. war is too important to be left to the generals How to restore sizzling, equitable, prosperity? The blockchain. The blockchain is a revolutionary form of software which, when more fully developed, portends to allow most of the value created by the community and by its cultural creatives to be enjoyed by the full community and its cultural creatives. Not (as now) exclusively, or at least primarily, by the corporate royalty and tech aristocracy. At long last, Dixon gives us a presentation of the blockchain and its properties imbued with an enthusiasm leavened with shrewd practical insight devoid of hype. Dixon is one of the Masters of the Digital Universe (as coder, entrepreneur, and investor). He knows whereof he writes and has written the first really great, comprehensive, book on the blockchain, . Read Write Own: Building the Next Era of the Internet Eureka! Dixon provides an overview in his introduction. He there provides us a World-Wide-Webb-telescopic-eye view of the three eras of the internet, of a new movement, of seeing the truth and determining the internet’s future. Part One, “Read Write”—treats the early internet, which was effectively read only, and Web2, allowing us surfers to write and post through websites, blogs, podcasts, social media and so forth. He explains why networks matter and lays out a trenchant taxonomy of the two dominant incumbent networks (protocol, like the internet and email, and corporate, such as Google and Facebook) and their properties. In Part Two, “Own,” Dixon then goes on to explain what blockchains are, what “tokens” are, and what the – radically great – properties of blockchain networks are… or could and can be. “Own” is a short word with huge implications. Ownership is what has been lost, and which can be restored via a (better) blockchain. In Part Three, “A New Era,” Dixon explains and explores the fundamentals of the business model, community-created software, and take rates (meaning the vigorish that the corporate network proprietors extract from their communities, a process he aptly calls “attract and extract”). He lays out how building networks with token incentives can dramatically change the way the world works for the better, making it more prosperous, cultured, and equitable. For the tantalizing promise of the blockchain to be realized we need smart policy that protects the public while not stifling innovation or exporting this cutting-edge tech, and the potentially trillions of associated dollars, to Berlin, Singapore or Zug. Imagine how worse off America would be today if Congress and our regulators had effectively deported the headquarters of the big Web success stories, like Google, to Europe or the Pacific? The need for a savvy legal and regulatory environment is something that legislators, regulators, and the ethical actors within the industry (like Dixon) all agree upon. Yet Washington has thus far proved mostly thrown, acting like the primates upon encountering the monolith at the beginning of . 2001: a Space Odyssey We’re at the precipice of deporting Web3 and its associated power, prestige and wealth. That may be about to change. The blockchain’s thought leaders are at long last gearing up to help guide the footsteps of the Washington elite back onto the Paths of Righteousness via smart policy, smart legislation, and smart regulation. Some very smart leaders of the blockchain ecosystem are now promising to , a modest investment in support a multi-billion dollar sector. invest $78M in lobbying and advocacy in 2024 The open question? Will they deploy their resources effectively? Or be taken in by the wily Beltway Bandits? What to do? Those of us who remember C.P. Snow’s seminal understand that the “physical scientists” (which would include software engineers, notwithstanding that software is, so to speak, metaphysical) among whom I count myself as a very lesser figure do not really understand the “literary intellectuals” (among whom I also count myself in a very minor way). The Two Cultures And The Scientific Revolution This misunderstanding causes a terrible disconnect. As Snow reported, in 1959: “They have a curious distorted image of each other. Their attitudes are so different that, even at the level of emotion, they can’t find much common ground.” This can be countered… if the blockchain thought leaders know how to adopt an effective approach. There is abundant potential common ground. Blah, blah, blah. There's this whole industry built on pimping out "gurus" promising secret keys to the magic kingdom. You'll pay some six-figure mastermind fee to sip bad coffee while some pay-to-speak “thought leader” on stage feeds you recycled platitudes. Here's the newsflash nobody wants to tell you: The fastest way to master something is to TEACH it. You think mentors got to where they are by sitting on their butts waiting for handouts? Hell no. They learned in the trenches, by DOING. They made mistakes, learned from them, and figured out how to do it better next time. Real wisdom isn't downloaded – it's forged in the fire. Teach it to Keep It Let's talk about brain science for a second. There's this thing called the "protégé effect." Turns out, when you EXPECT to teach something, you learn it on a deeper level. Why? Because it forces you to organize your thoughts, spot holes in your understanding, and break things down in a way that makes sense to someone else. You think those business influencers got all their knowledge overnight? Nope. They started out fumbling their way through, probably screwing things up just as much as the rest of us. This is the #1 excuse I hear every time. I call BS. Every single one of you has something valuable to share. The trick is that it might not be what you think. Maybe you just: Figured out this crazy productivity hack for squeezing an extra hour into your day. Took your dog through basic training without losing your mind. Mastered a killer 20-minute bodyweight workout. Found a budgeting app that finally stopped you from blowing all your cash every weekend Think that stuff's too basic? Wrong. For someone struggling with those things, your 'basic' skill is worth its weight in gold. Your secret is the starting point someone else is craving. What makes you valuable as a mentor isn't just knowledge, it's relatability. When a 'guru' is on some pedestal, that creates distance. People are afraid to ask the "dumb" questions. however, were just in those beginner shoes. You remember the suck, the confusion, the "why the hell can't I get this" vibes. That makes you approachable. You, The Overflow Effect Here's the part no one tells you about 'pouring into others': it creates this crazy energy loop that comes back to you tenfold. Think about it like this: Every time you invest in helping someone else, you: Solidify your own understanding. Build confidence like a damn muscle. Gain clarity about your own path. A one-page PDF cheat sheet that breaks down a complex process? Zoom Office hours every Friday afternoon? Pull people in from LinkedIn. Social media, baby. Tell your network you're open to helping a handful of folks with [your niche topic]. Let your enthusiasm for the subject shine through – that's how you attract like-minded people. Don't worry about looking fancy. People connect with real. Put it out there: Overcoming Your Inner Critic Guess what? Your brain's gonna freak out. Imposter syndrome will throw up roadblocks. You'll hear whispers like: "Who the hell am I to teach this?" "Everyone else knows this stuff already." "What if I give bad advice and look like an idiot?" Focus on being helpful, sincere, and open to learning your mentees. That humility builds trust like nothing else. You're dipping your toes, testing the waters, and evolving right along with the folks you're helping. Don't worry about having all the answers right this second. Be transparent about your journey. People love rooting for the underdog. Your scrappiness and genuine desire to help are your winning qualities. Now you’re wondering, ok - I’ll do it… but I’ve never done this before. No problem, here’s how to start. First Interactions: Set the Stage Your goal isn't to be some all-knowing sage. No, you're the supportive guide on the side – here to provide helpful signposts and cheer your mentees on. With that in mind, here's how to kick things off on the right foot: – Ditch the generic "What do you need help with?" That’s too damn open-ended, especially for newbies who likely don't know where to start. Instead, dive into the specifics: Ask Powerful Questions "What's your biggest pain point with [your niche] right now?" "What's one small win you'd love to achieve by the end of this week?" "What part of this process feels the most overwhelming/confusing?" These force focus and get them thinking strategically rather than flailing around in overwhelmed. – Beginners get obsessed with end results. They want to hit some arbitrary number or get that dream outcome NOW. Your job is to bring them back to Earth: Instead of: "How do I make $10k a month?" ask "What's one concrete thing you can do to move closer to that goal?" Focus on Actions, Not Outcomes today This creates manageable momentum and prevents paralysis. Progress is your real measure. – Let's get real: a lot of people are addicted to the struggle. Watch out for red flags like, "I don't have time," "This won't work for me," and "I've tried all that before." Your job is to call gentle BS. Don't be mean, but be firm: Challenge Excuses "If you found just 15 minutes a day, what could you chip away at?" "Great! What makes your situation different?" Deepti is the Founder and CEO of , an enterprise-level presentation partner for many Fortune 2000 companies. The Tech Panda Rajat Mishra Deepti Juturu Prezent Prezentium This dynamic duo has not only built a loving family over 15 years of marriage but has also nurtured two successful businesses side by side. “People tend to generalize a lot. But I think some of these generalizations are not necessarily true. I think we’ve been smart about how we do it as well,” says Deepti. I think you should really take the time to understand your spouse. Because the person you married or you’re with, she has some unique talents Rajat thinks it’s not that complicated when you apply mutual respect. “I think you should really take the time to understand your spouse. Because the person you married or you’re with, she has some unique talents. She’s great at so many things, which may not be the same as yours. She may not react to a situation exactly the way you do, but many times I think, we as men, we just take our perspective of the world and assume. You’ve got to genuinely respect what they bring to the table and build on that,” he says. Their story began in The Wharton School, where fate brought them together as interns at McKinsey. Rajat vividly recalls the moment he first saw Deepti, saying, “The moment I saw her, I said, ‘Okay, this is the girl I want in my life.'” A lot of times, we don’t even know what we’re capable of, because we come up with excuses in our mind before it even happens Fast forward 15 years, and they have built a life together, complete with two children. Despite dating for only six months before getting engaged and married, their relationship has flourished both personally and professionally. Companies as Children The couple’s entrepreneurial journey started when Deepti opened her company, turning draft presentations into masterpieces overnight. The company grew to serve a 100+ enterprise clients and also gathered valuable metadata. After some research, Rajat too quit his 7-figure job at Cisco, invested US$1 million of their own money, and founded Prezent.ai. They soon raised a US$4.3 million seed round, and snagged a US$20 million Series A right before the Ukraine crisis hit. They now serve 80+ Fortune 2000 companies. The way we take care of our kids is kind of how we take care of the companies as well Rajat describes their businesses as “our kids as well.” Drawing parallels between parenting and entrepreneurship, he explains, “The way we take care of our kids is kind of how we take care of the companies as well. There are days when we both say, ‘why are we doing this? Because business is a roller coaster.” Their approach is one of work-life integration rather than strict separation. Whether watching a ball game with the kids or cooking together, the couple seamlessly blends family and work responsibilities. Communication & Hacks One of the challenges they face is resolving disagreements, especially when they arise in the context of their businesses. Between the two companies, with 500 plus people and 90 plus enterprise accounts, there are bound to be issues. However, unlike colleagues who can go home after work and reflect, Rajat and Deepti must continue the conversation at home. “If you’re working with someone at work, and you have a disagreement or an issue, at five o’clock, you are done and then you have the night to think about it. But of course, for us, if we have a disagreement about one of the businesses, we still have to go back to each other and continue,” says Rajat. He says, in the end, it comes down to communication. To address this, they have implemented a few interesting rituals. For example, every day they have lunch together. “Every single day, we go to a restaurant and discuss what happened in the morning, for which both our calendars are blocked from 12.00 to 1.00 PM,” he informs. Values are markers for how to live your life. We feel like they will help our children make decisions as they grow up. So, we came up with courage, kindness, and learning as our three core values Another hack their son came up with is to ensure family time every day from 5.00 PM to 7.00 PM, during which, the couple cooks together after which they sit down as a family to talk or play board games. Another tactic they use is to maintain a calendar, where an argument about work or family entails a cross on that day, while a no-argument earns them a check mark. Another important aspect, says Deepti, is building the values in the family. Their values, including courage, kindness, and learning, serve as guiding principles both in their family and business lives. “Values are markers for how to live your life. We feel like they will help our children make decisions as they grow up. So, we came up with courage, kindness, and learning as our three core values.” Starting her company with a six-month-old child, Deepti embodied the value of courage and kindness. “When I left Genentech to start Prezentium, I was scared, but courage is doing it despite being scared. I also had a social mission, to help underprivileged children realize their potential,” she recalls. Keeping in sync with her goals, for every slide, Prezentium donates a dollar to a children’s charity. Prezent too has also pledged 1% of its equity to children’s causes. “This is important to us in terms of values and making sure that our kids live these values, as they’re thinking, as they’re growing up, and as they think about the decisions that they’re making as well,” she says. Another hack the couple makes use of is going for a walk. “We go for walks quite a bit,” Rajat informs. One of my friends once told me that a walk has two sides. On the walk from here to where you’re going, you be quiet and listen to the other person’s perspective. And then on the way back she can be quiet and then you can share.” Embracing Differences Despite being different in personality and work styles, Rajat and Deepti have learned to appreciate each other’s strengths. “Deepti and I interestingly are very different people. We are both introverts, but outside of that we are totally different. She is a strong feeler. I’m a strong thinker. She’s very organized and planned, and I’m more spontaneous,” Rajat acknowledges. In the end, because you love each other, you always look for the most generous explanation for why someone is behaving in that way “I am more detail oriented and Rajat is more a visionary. But we have learned that we are so different that we know what our sources of tension are,” says Deepti. Why working with your spouse can help, she says, is that there’s more empathy. “In the end, because you love each other, you always look for the most generous explanation for why someone is behaving in that way. Like I had the excuse of ‘Can I do it as a mom and run a successful business?’ So, I was almost going to take myself out of the game before I even tried. Disinformation Echo-Chambers on Facebook: Abstract & Intro

Data Collection and Preparation Recognizing that isolated bots might not represent the most critical issues on the platform, we opted to focus on coordinated activities to investigate disinformation campaigns within Facebook groups. We contend that these communities inherently function as echo chambers, where users intentionally join these Facebook groups to be exposed selectively to information that aligns with their beliefs and values. Hence, these communities offer an ideal context to delve into information dissemination dynamics. To explore this avenue, our study follows a three-step approach. Initially, we identified disinformation narratives circulating on Facebook by analyzing debunked content from two prominent fact-checking agencies in Brazil: Agência Lupa and Aos Fatos. Both organizations adhere to the transparency standards set by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), a coalition dedicated to upholding excellence in the fact-checking industry [69]. Our data collection spanned from January 2020 to June 2021, yielding a total of 2,860 items. We employed an algorithm to filter out debunks that did not include the term “vaccine” or related variations in their titles. This process yielded 250 debunks specifically addressing COVID-19 vaccines. Subsequently, we subjected these debunks to qualitative analysis, confirming that they were all false or misleading, and eliminating any that did not meet this criterion. Moving on to our second step, we extracted relevant data to locate these debunked posts within Facebook. We utilized academic access to CrowdTangle, an insights tool owned and operated by Meta since 2016. It is important to note that prior research has highlighted certain limitations of this tool, such as incomplete metrics and restricted access to fully public spaces on the broader Facebook or Instagram platforms. CrowdTangle only encompasses public groups with a certain user threshold, as opposed to the entire spectrum of groups [9,70,71]. In our search, we aimed to pinpoint sentences that could be readily identified and would not yield unrelated results. For instance, we refrained from using phrases such as "COVID-19 vaccines" or similar constructs that could encompass both disinformation and credible information. Our search criteria aligned with the timeframe of the debunks, spanning from January 2020 to June 2021. Through this process, we retrieved a total of 21,614 posts containing disinformation across 3,912 groups. Importantly, this data extraction was performed after Facebook’s public announcement that it had removed false content from its platform [72]. This announcement holds particular significance, as these posts should have been eradicated from the platform by that time, which could have hindered our study. Nevertheless, our findings reveal that this announcement was not fully realized, as many debunked posts persisted on the platform. This discrepancy suggests that the volume of such posts within Facebook public groups could be even more substantial. In our third phase, we proceeded to download all the identified posts. Due to data extraction limitations within the tool, we segmented the process into timeframes, later amalgamating the data into a unified dataset. This database underwent a process of duplicate removal based on post IDs, resulting in the elimination of 1,707 duplicated entries from our initial dataset. Consequently, our final dataset encompassed 19,457 distinct entries. 2.2. Data Analysis and Visualization In prior investigations of coordinated inauthentic behavior, researchers utilized estimated time thresholds to identify items shared in near-simultaneity over a short period. Similarly, a statistical metric was proposed to identify concurrent link sharing by assessing the interarrival time – the interval difference in seconds between successive shares of URLs [28]. However, we chose not to adopt these thresholds in our study for several reasons. Unlike previous studies that centered on URLs [9,28], our analysis seeks to identify CIB within textual and visual content. Moreover, our study focuses solely on coordinated acticities among nonhuman accounts, necessitating a more stringent approach. This threshold determination was guided by similar studies that calculated this value based on a subset of the 10% of URLs with the shortest time intervals between the first and second shares [9,28,54–56]. Our empirical tests demonstrated that the timeframe calculated from the shortest intervals of 10% of URLs could range from 30 seconds to a minute. Consequently, depending on the dataset in use, this threshold might extend to around one minute, a timeframe that could feasibly be performed by humans. Given these constraints, we undertook manual testing to ascertain a timeframe unlikely for consecutive human posting. Our tests indicated that this interval should be less than 30 seconds. We acknowledge that factors like internet speed and computing power might impact this performance. Nevertheless, we opted to adopt a threshold of 30 seconds between two posts, as it represented the minimum time required for consecutive posting. Our approach also considered a recursive 30-second timeframe, accounting for the possibility of repeated new posts within short intervals – a scenario unlikely to occur frequently. This approach allowed us to identify coordinated posts that were disseminated over an extended period. Considering these temporal criteria, our computational model assessed four elements to determine coordination between posts. First, the method analyzed the “message” field, encompassing the textual content of a Facebook post. Second, it scrutinized the “description” field, which provides textual information accompanying external URLs or images shared on Facebook thumbnails. For example, the description for the post in Figure 1 was “Uma catastrófica análise sobre as vacinas contra o vírus chinês: ‘Interferem diretamente no material genético’,” identical to the content in the thumbnail. Third, our methodology leveraged CrowdTangle’s computer vision algorithm to detect text within images and ascertain if these visual contents were disseminated through automated means. It is worth noting that prior research has highlighted that CrowdTangle’s computer vision capabilities for text recognition have been a recent development and are not without limitations 71. Lastly, our process examined whether multiple entities rapidly and consistently shared the same URL, which serves as another indicator of coordinated activity [9,28]. To visualize the coordinated behaviors among different Facebook groups more effectively, we constructed a graph =( , ), where each vertex V={ 1, 2, 3,…, n} represents a Facebook group, and the edges ={ 1, 2, 3,…,em} indicate the sharing of posts with signals of coordinated activity across these groups. This process was applied to the entire dataset, resulting in the creation of Figure 2. To implement this graph, we utilized the network analysis software Gephi[73], which allowed us to visually demonstrate the stronger connections between certain groups and the presence of structures that resemble “echo chambers.” The Louvain method was employed to identify network communities within this graph [74]. This community detection algorithm relies on modularity optimization, resulting in a fast process to generate clusters [75]. Through this technique, we could pinpoint closely linked Facebook groups that formed more significant echo chambers. The significant impact of technology on society, culture, and economy is undeniable. It has now become common to discuss technology together with innovation, as well as becoming a growing consideration for the government, the law, social initiatives, and families to contend with. How should we use technology for our benefit? What are the risks, and how do we manage them? How can we use technology to enhance our businesses? What safety measures do we need to take to protect our children from unwanted influence? What new possibilities in terms of careers and aspirations does technology make possible? There are some pioneering examples of technology initiatives within Africa. Wave (Fintech) has taken Africa by storm, Maraphones (Locally Manufactured Smartphone), BuXin (Electric Vehicle), Kids in Tech (robotics) and Fortizo Technologies (consumer electronics) are but a few of many other examples. Within the Gambia itself, you see people solving a whole range of social problems with technology (you can hear more about it in ). this video In this article, we will dive deeper into the possibilities that exist for young Gambia, full of innovative and energetic minds who seek better opportunities and environments to thrive, to technologically advance their nations, and to contribute their innovative solutions to the global landscape. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE? WHAT NEW REALITIES AND SOLUTIONS CAN BE CREATED THROUGH THE POWER OF TECHNOLOGY? The Gambia is in dire need of a change in the status quo. Most of the methods and processes of doing business and more are quite antiquated. Take, for instance, the banking sector; we should have passed the point where people have to queue for long hours just to withdraw money. Change should be initiated in the financial realm, as well as many other areas, and this necessary evolution is possible mainly through the transformative power of technology. Opening up new ways of doing business, creating new lifestyles, and interacting with each other: Until now, many within Africa may have felt limited by the skills, knowledge, and resources available within the country and, to some extent, lost hope or the ability to look to the sky and dream big. However, with the increasing access to technology and the access to information that comes with it, Gambians have new opportunities at their fingertips. With time, this allows us to dream bigger and imagine new realities for our prospects and lives. Opening up the imagination and sense of empowerment through technology: Technology wields the power of solving some of the most pressing problems in the Gambia, illegal migration included. We can create innovative solutions to these problems and then communicate and take action to solve them without the need to leave our homes. This is the power of technology. That isn’t to say that you should aim to rely on technology and never leave home, but when there is no other option (due to safety and accessibility issues), technology plays a key role in empowering people to make a difference. On a lighter note, boredom, suppressed ambitions, and depression can be resolved with virtual gaming experiences, or furthermore, other extended reality tools can aid youth to vividly live their dream lives and make income by gaming professionally. A means of pulling us out of our boredom and suppressed ambitions into a world of possibilities: Although one of the smallest countries in Africa, The Gambia has the potential to be a pioneering hub of digital innovation. Like Cuba is known globally for its expert doctors, Gambia can champion its skills in technology and enterprise. The country is 65% under 25, many of whom are self-starters from a young age. The economy is, in bulk, self-employed rather than in jobs, with a large percentage of the population working in agriculture. This is a fertile breeding ground for the next generation of technology innovators solving some of the most pressing global problems in agriculture, urbanization, and youth unemployment. Putting the Gambia on the global map: HOW CAN WE MAKE THESE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES HAPPEN IN THE GAMBIA? HOW SOON CAN IT HAPPEN? An open-source approach to skills development is perfect for developing the technology ecosystem in a place like The Gambia. There is a sincere desire to grow and learn within the country, and a willingness to share and support each other is an integral part of the culture. This creates the perfect environment for a robust open-source culture to flourish - where skills and opportunities are resources that can be exchanged and traded between people and organizations for economic growth. In recent years, young Gambians have been able to access information, resources, and support from around the globe - courses in technical skills, online mentoring from professionals in other countries, and countless examples to inspire innovation. Creating an open-source network, sharing skills, resources, and opportunities: There are a plethora of courses now available to Gambians through which they can acquire the relevant technical skills to create extraordinary innovations. The University of Applied Science Engineering and Technology features an innovation lab, one of the many great institutions in the Gambia, granting young minds the opportunity to create disruptive solutions and out-of-the-box conceptions. Technical training is a means of creating higher IQs, mental training, and sharper attention to detail. The bridge between potential and performance is training, and although there is a lot already available, there are significant gaps that need to be filled. Changing what is possible, what opportunities are available to young Gambians: The Gambia needs more research labs that delve into cutting-edge technology like robotics, AI, and other advanced technology areas if we are to majorly contribute to the rapid technological advancement happening all over the world, and expose Gambians to the possibilities of technology for the country. We can start imagining smart cities and artificially intelligent traffic systems that are integrated with self-driving cars through IoT, holographic technology, and customized learning through AI. Creating spaces and places for young, innovative minds to thrive and imagine: New realities emerge on the technological horizon at a rate that sometimes seems too fast-paced for developing nations like The Gambia to keep up with. Nonetheless, history has proven and continues to prove that this is not the case. Africans continue to amaze more developed nations with the novel ideas they invent. From the biological AI revolution by Nana Kofi Quaky in Ghana to the IoT waste management systems in Kenya, it is clear that Africa has a lot in store for the global technological community. This future, although sophisticated,  is one that preserves rather than harms or destroys the planet. The introduction of electric vehicle (EV) technology is ironclad proof that there is a big appetite for more green alternatives to technology. With EV, Fairphones, and other green technology our future is looking both safe and nourishing, so we can preserve the beauty of the Smiling Coast and help it to thrive for generations. Recognizing the potential and power that already exists for us to make these realities now: What does Gambia want their future to look like? How can technology aid the creation of that future? Use words in their proper sense. Write, not "His apparent guilt justified his friends in disowning him," but "his evident guilt." "Conscious" and "aware," "unnatural" and "supernatural," "transpire" and "occur," "circumstance" and "event," "reverse" and "converse," "eliminate" and "elicit," are often confused together. This rule forbids the use of the same word in different senses. "It is in my power to refuse your request, and since I have power to do this, I may lawfully do it." Here the second "power" is used for "authority." This rule also forbids the slovenly use of "nice," "awfully," "delicious," "glorious," &c. See (2). 2. Avoid exaggerations. "The boundless plains in the heart of the empire furnished inexhaustible supplies of corn, that would have almost sufficed for twice the population." Here "inexhaustible" is inconsistent with what follows. The words "unprecedented," "incalculable," "very," and "stupendous" are often used in the same loose way. 3. Avoid useless circumlocution and "fine writing." "Her Majesty here partook of lunch." Write "lunched." "Partook of" implies sharing, and is incorrect as well as lengthy. So, do not use "apex" for "top," "species" for "kind," "individual" for "man," "assist" for "help," &c. [5] 4. Be careful how you use the following words: "not … and," "any," "only," "not … or," "that." See below, "Or." And. —"I am not bound to receive any messenger that you send."

Use "every" or "a single." —(1) "I do not intend to help you, because you are my enemy &c." ought to mean (2), "I intend not to help you, and my reason for not helping you is, because you are my enemy." But it is often wrongly used to mean (3), "I intend to help you, not because you are my enemy (but because you are poor, blind, &c.)." In the latter case, not ought to be separated from intend. By distinctly marking the limits to which the influence of not extends, the ambiguity may be removed. Any. Not. is often used ambiguously for alone. "The rest help me to revenge myself; you only advise me to wait." This ought to mean, "you only advise, instead of helping;" but in similar sentences "you only" is often used for "you alone." But see 21. Only —When "or" is preceded by a negative, as "I do not want butter or honey," "or" ought not, strictly speaking, to be used like "and," nor like "nor." The strict use of "not … or" would be as follows:— Or. "You say you don't want both butter and honey—you want butter or honey; I, on the contrary, do not want butter or honey—I want them both." Practically, however, this meaning is so rare, that "I don't want butter or honey" is regularly used for "I want neither butter nor honey." But where there is the slightest danger of ambiguity, it is desirable to use nor. The same ambiguity attends "not … and." "I do not see Thomas and John" is commonly used for "I see neither Thomas nor John;" but it might mean, "I do not see them both—I see only one of them." —The different uses of "that" produce much ambiguity, e.g. "I am so much surprised by this statement that I am desirous of resigning, that I scarcely know what reply to make." Here it is impossible to tell, till one has read past "resigning," whether the first "that" depends upon "so" or "statement." Write: "The statement that I am desirous of resigning surprises me so much that I scarcely know &c." That. 4 a. Be careful in the use of ambiguous words, e.g. "certain." "Certain" is often used for "some," as in "Independently of his earnings, he has a certain property," where the meaning might be "unfailing." Under this head may be mentioned the double use of words, such as "left" in the same form and sound, but different in meaning. Even where there is no obscurity, the juxtaposition of the same word twice used in two senses is inelegant, e.g. (Bain), "He turned to the left and left the room." I have known the following slovenly sentence misunderstood: "Our object is that, with the aid of practice, we may sometime arrive at the point where we think eloquence in its most praiseworthy form to lie." "To lie" has been supposed to mean "to deceive." (For "which" see 8.) The ambiguity arising from the use of he applying to different persons is well known. 5. Be careful how you use "he," "it," "they," "these," &c. "He told his friend that if he did not feel better in half an hour he thought he had better return." See (6) for remedy. Much ambiguity is also caused by excessive use of such phrases as in this way, of this sort, &c. "God, foreseeing the disorders of human nature, has given us certain passions and affections which arise from, or whose objects are, these disorders. Of this sort are fear, resentment, compassion." Repeat the noun: "Among these passions and affections are fear &c." Two distinct uses of it may be noted. It, when referring to something that precedes, may be called "retrospective;" but when to something that follows, "prospective." In "Avoid indiscriminate charity: it is a crime," "it" is retrospective.[6] In "It is a crime to give indiscriminately," "it" is prospective. The prospective "it," if productive of ambiguity, can often be omitted by using the infinitive as a subject: "To give indiscriminately is a crime." Speeches in the third person afford a particular, though very common case, of the general ambiguity mentioned in (5). Instead of "He told his friend that if he did not feel better &c.," write "He said to his friend, 'If, I (or you) don't feel better &c.'" 6. Report a speech in the First, not the Third Person, where necessary to avoid ambiguity. Thus, where Essex is asking Sir Robert Cecil that Francis Bacon may be appointed Attorney-General, the dialogue is (as it almost always is in Lord Macaulay's writings) in the First Person, except where it becomes tedious and uninteresting so as to require condensation, and then it drops into the Third Person: 6 a. Sometimes, where the writer cannot know the exact words, or where the exact words are unimportant, or lengthy and uninteresting, the Third Person is preferable. "Sir Robert had nothing to say but that he thought his own abilities equal to the place which he hoped to obtain, and that his father's long services deserved such a mark of gratitude from the Queen." —Even when a speech is reported in the third person, "that" need not always be inserted before the dependent verb. Thus, instead of "He said that he took it ill that his promises were not believed," we may write, "'He took it ill,' he said, 'that &c.'" This gives a little more life, and sometimes more clearness also. 6 b. Omission of "that" in a speech reported in the Third Person. 7. When you use a Participle, as "walking," implying "when," "while," "though," "that," make it clear by the context what is implied. "Republics, in the first instance, are never desired for their own sakes. I do not think they will finally be desired at all, unaccompanied by courtly graces and good breeding." Here there is a little doubt whether the meaning is "since they are, or, if they are, unaccompanied." —"Men walking (that walk, or when they walk) on ice sometimes fall." That or when. It is better to use "men walking" to mean "men when they walk." If the relative is meant, use "men that walk," instead of the participle. (1) "While he was } Walking on { (1) the road, } he fell." (2) "Because he was } { (2) the ice, } When the participle precedes the subject, it generally implies a cause: "Seeing this, he retired." Otherwise it generally has its proper participial meaning, e.g. "He retired, keeping his face towards us." If there is any ambiguity, write "on seeing,"—"at the same time, or while, keeping." (1) "Though he was} {(1) he nevertheless stood
} { his ground." (2) "Since he was } Struck with terror, {(2) he rapidly retreated." (3) "If he is } {(3) he will soon retreat.” 8. When using the Relative Pronoun, use "who" and "which" where the meaning is "and he, it, &c.," "for he, it, &c." In other cases use "that," if euphony allows. "I heard this from the inspector, who (and he) heard it from the guard that travelled with the train." "Fetch me (all) the books that lie on the table, and also the pamphlets, which (and these) you will find on the floor." An adherence to this rule would remove much ambiguity. Thus: "There was a public-house next door, which was a great nuisance," means "and this (i.e. the fact of its being next door) was a great nuisance;" whereas that would have meant "Next door was a public-house that (i.e. the public-house) was a great nuisance." Thus, in the first example above, "inspector" is complete in itself, and "who" introduces a new fact about him; "guard" is incomplete, and requires "that travelled with the train" to complete the meaning. "Who," "which," &c. introduce a new fact about the antecedent, whereas "that" introduces something without which the antecedent is incomplete or undefined. It is not, and cannot be, maintained that this rule, though observed in Elizabethan English, is observed by our best modern authors. (Probably a general impression that "that" cannot be used to refer to persons has assisted "who" in supplanting "that" as a relative.) But the convenience of the rule is so great that beginners in composition may with advantage adhere to the rule. The following are some of the cases where who and which are mostly used, contrary to the rule, instead of that. — Exceptions: (a) When the antecedent is defined, e.g. by a possessive case, modern English uses who instead of that. It is rare, though it would be useful,[7] to say "His English friends that had not seen him" for "the English friends, or those of his English friends, that had not seen him." (b) That sounds ill when separated from its verb and from its antecedents, and emphasized by isolation: "There are many persons that, though unscrupulous, are commonly good-tempered, and that, if not strongly incited by self-interest, are ready for the most part to think of the interest of their neighbours." Shakespeare frequently uses who after that when the relative is repeated. See "Shakespearian Grammar," par. 260. (c) If the antecedent is qualified by that, the relative must not be that. Besides other considerations, the repetition is disagreeable. Addison ridicules such language as "That remark that I made yesterday is not that that I said that I regretted that I had made." (d) That cannot be preceded by a preposition, and hence throws the preposition to the end. "This is the rule that I adhere to." This is perfectly good English, though sometimes unnecessarily avoided. But, with some prepositions, the construction is harsh and objectionable, e.g. "This is the mark that I jumped beyond," "Such were the prejudices that he rose above." The reason is that some of these disyllabic prepositions are used as adverbs, and, when separated from their nouns, give one the impression that they are used as adverbs. (e) After pronominal adjectives used for personal pronouns, modern English prefers who. "There are many, others, several, those, who can testify &c." (f) After that used as a conjunction there is sometimes a dislike to use that as a relative. See (c). 9. Do not use redundant "and" before "which."[8] "I gave him a very interesting book for a present, and which cost me five shillings." In short sentences the absurdity is evident, but in long sentences it is less evident, and very common. "A petition was presented for rescinding that portion of the bye-laws which permits application of public money to support sectarian schools over which ratepayers have no control, this being a violation of the principle of civil and religious liberty, and which the memorialists believe would provoke a determined and conscientious resistance." Here which ought grammatically to refer to "portion" or "schools." But it seems intended to refer to "violation." Omit "and," or repeat "a violation" before "which," or turn the sentence otherwise. 10. Equivalents for Relative. —"Men thirsting (for 'men that thirst') for revenge are not indifferent to plunder." The objection to the participle is that here, as often, it creates a little ambiguity. The above sentence may mean, "men, when they thirst," or "though they thirst," as well as "men that thirst." Often however there is no ambiguity: "I have documents proving this conclusively." (a) Participle. —Instead of "He was the first that entered" you can write "to enter;" for "He is not a man who will act dishonestly," "to act." This equivalent cannot often be used. (b) Infinitive. can sometimes be used for "by which," "in which," so as to avoid a harsh repetition of "which." "The means whereby this may be effected." But this use is somewhat antiquated. (c) Whereby, wherein, &c., —"The man that does not care for music is to be pitied" can be written (though not so forcibly), "If a man does not care for music, he is to be pitied." It is in long sentences that this equivalent will be found most useful. (d) If. —"He did his best, which was all that could be expected," can be written, "and this was all that, &c." (e) And this. —"Let me repeat that which[9] you ought to know, that that which is worth doing is worth doing well." "Let me repeat, what you ought to know, that what is worth doing is worth doing well." (f) What. —It is sometimes thought ungrammatical to omit the relative, as in "The man (that) you speak of." On the contrary, that when an object (not when a subject) may be omitted, wherever the antecedent and the subject of the relative sentence are brought into juxtaposition by the omission. (g) Omission of Relative. This is particularly useful after a negative: "He said that he would not even hear me, which I confess I had expected." Here the meaning may be, "I had expected that he would," or "that he would not, hear me." Write, "a refusal, or, a favour, that I confess I had expected." See (38). 10 a'. Repeat the Antecedent in some new form, where there is any ambiguity. —This is a most important rule. Instead of "I have neither the necessaries of life nor the means of procuring them," write (if you can with truth), "I have not a crust of bread, nor a penny to buy one." 11. Use particular for general terms. CAUTION.—There is a danger in this use. The meaning is vividly expressed but sometimes may be exaggerated or imperfect. Crust of bread may be an exaggeration; on the other hand, if the speaker is destitute not only of bread, but also of shelter and clothing, then crust of bread is an imperfect expression of the meaning. In philosophy and science, where the language ought very often to be inclusive and brief, general and not particular terms must be used. The disadvantage of the use of Verbal Nouns is this, that, unless they are immediately preceded by prepositions, they are sometimes liable to be confounded with participles. The following is an instance of an excessive use of Verbal Nouns: 11 a. Avoid Verbal Nouns where Verbs can be used instead. "The pretended confession of the secretary was only collusion to lay the jealousies of the king's favouring popery, which still hung upon him, notwithstanding his writing on the Revelation, and affecting to enter on all occasions into controversy, asserting in particular that the Pope was Antichrist." Write "notwithstanding that he wrote and affected &c." 12. Use a particular Person instead of a class. "What is the splendour of the greatest monarch compared with the beauty of a flower?" "What is the splendour of Solomon compared with the beauty of a daisy?" Under this head may come the forcible use of Noun for Adjective: "This fortress is weakness itself." An excess of this use is lengthy and pedantically bombastic, e.g., the following paraphrase for "in every British colony:"—"under Indian palm-groves, amid Australian gum-trees, in the shadow of African mimosas, and beneath Canadian pines." 13. Use Metaphor instead of literal statement. "The ship ploughs the sea" is clearer than "the ship cleaves the sea," and shorter than "the ship cleaves the sea as a plough cleaves the land." Of course there are some subjects for which Metaphor should not be used. See (14 a) and (14 b). 14. Do not confuse Metaphor. "In a moment the thunderbolt was upon them, deluging their country with invaders." The following is attributed to Sir Boyle Roche: "Mr. Speaker, I smell a rat, I see him brewing in the air; but, mark me, I shall yet nip him in the bud." Some words, once metaphorical, have ceased to be so regarded. Hence many good writers say "under these circumstances" instead of "in these circumstances."
