As I enter my third year of leading an entirely virtual company, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I’ve seen virtual environments impact employee morale. After the initial shock and uncertainty of going virtual in March 2020, many team members shared how much they appreciated the flexibility of a virtual office environment. However, as the months wore on, I saw what’s been : people were working longer hours, and some were suffering from burnout. No sooner was a team member done with one item than they moved on to the next. Work had been reduced to a series of Zoom calls, Slack messages, emails, and to do’s. widely documented To combat this, my co-founder Bruno Van Tuykom and I quickly did more to try to bring fun and team building to the virtual workplace — from company get-togethers to 1:1 virtual chats. Even with these efforts, I felt something was missing. Slowly, we came to realize that simply having more time off, or more virtual social time is only part of the answer. A crucial aspect of getting back a feeling of fulfillment and connection that can be lost in a virtual environment was being more intentional about celebrating successes. In an office, getting together to celebrate a win — bringing on new customers, signing new partnerships, launching new products — was natural. You might go out for lunch, get a drink after work, or just see each other in person and offer congratulations. Early on, we even had a  bell to ring in each new user (which was quickly retired for obvious reasons). When you’re working virtually, just sending a few celebration emojis in Slack before moving on to the next task doesn’t cut it. I’ve found that being more intentional around virtual celebrations has boosted employee morale, and made everyone more excited about the work we do. If you’re looking for ideas for being more creative or intentional about celebrating successes and milestones, here are a few of my favorites: Getting the Whole Team Involved in Positive Feedback No matter how busy we all are, during our weekly meetings we set aside time to offer specific, positive feedback or a note of appreciation about the work done by individual team members that we coined team shoutouts. We open shoutouts up to the whole team, so anyone can give recognition to each other. Planning Thematic Celebrations When you get a big initiative over the line, a thematic celebration can be in order. For instance, when we launched Spanish language telehealth services last year, our team celebrated with a company-wide, online salsa class, along with Spanish trivia. Finding Meaningful Ways to Recognize Anniversaries and Birthdays Too often, I see managers hold events for team members who are leaving, rather than celebrate those who are celebrating years of successes working at the company. For work anniversaries, we will send a personalized note and a small gift to team members. When it comes to birthdays, you can find creative ways to go beyond the virtual greeting card. For each team member’s birthday, we give the person who had the most recent birthday a small budget to get a gift for the next person. We’d had team members buy things like audio books and arts and crafts kits to add a bit of personalization to each gift. Celebrating Important Moments in Time Celebrations don’t have to be limited to company successes or holidays. You can also look for ways to get your team more involved in recognizing important moments in time. For instance, during Black History Month, we gave each team member a small budget to donate towards a non-profit from a list that our team members curated including supporting Black mental health, maternal health for Black mothers, and supporting Black women in STEM. This was a way for the team to learn about the work of these non-profits, and feel like they could more easily support these organizations. We also did something similar to celebrate Pride Month last year by providing a budget to team members to donate to organizations supporting the LGBTQ community.

On 20th of February 2021 at CodeChem we organized the third Virtual Open Day, which many of us will remember for a long time. It was challenging, fun and exciting. Unfortunately, due to the COVID situation we had to hold the event online. That limited us to display the chemistry that's present in our company. But we still managed to pull it off. The event was attended by more than 150 young people ready to give their best. We rolled up our sleeves, prepared a hundred virtual machines, and created a lot of discord channels. We were motivated and impressed by the number of applicants. Why Open Day is so important to us? Open Day is not just important to us, it's the most important event of the year for CodeChem. During it, we get to meet interesting people, smart students, and folks full of ambition. We get to hang out with them, teach them, but also allow them to teach us too. Everyone has a unique set of qualities. These are the goals of the event: . It's always a pleasure to meet young people who are hungry for knowledge, not afraid of new challenges and who are interested in technology. Right? Meeting smart people . A sneak peek from Open Day First, we started with a presentation about our company. It was short because there were over 150 candidates. We had to divide them into two batches because the time was limited. Then, the next 3 hours were intended for the workshop. The candidates were divided into software and embedded teams. Each team consisted of two candidates and one mentor. During which the candidates were given a task. The idea behind ​​this concept is to think together and help each other. The mentors helped them achieve that easily. The problem solving process was not easy at all. But it was a good way to show off their skills so we can test their knowledge. The candidates saw it as great challenge but they didn't give up. Kudos to them. Spatial computing is beginning the slow crawl to maturity. You could view a home on your computer, running around a space using the same drag and drop technology that Google Maps used to let us explore the world. Thanks to head mounted displays, those 360 walkthroughs are now even more immersive, and because 360 cameras have gotten so cheap and easy to use, every realtor can and should be adding a 360 walkthrough to their listings. 360 walkthrough isn’t new Because the cost of entry is so low, 360 walkthroughs are still a smart place to start, but this technology is quickly being overshadowed. There’s no real sense of immersion, since your point of view is limited to wherever the camera was initially placed; viewers don’t have the freedom to walk around, putting themselves in corners or experiencing the room from any angles the camera didn’t capture. We doubt this technology will survive more than five years, though for now the cost of hardware for alternative options will keep it afloat. #2. Lightfield Volume Capture Speaking of alternative options — we’re a little obsessed with light field volume capture at Hammer & Tusk, but it’s hard not to be. These cameras capture 360 video with 6 degrees of freedom, which means they can reproduce a location in photorealistic detail, and then let a person wander through that space. While creating video with this technology is still in the “so many hurdles to overcome” camp, the great news is that still pictures are ready for their mainstream debut. There are a ton of companies working on this hardware, but none that we know of specializing specifically in adapting it for real estate. It’s a wide open playing field. #3. Building in a Virtual World Getting to consumers is a huge part of real estate, but what about creating buildings in the first place? If you’ve ever seen someone painstakingly hand-paint 400 tiny fake trees to put on the outside of an architectural model, you know the discipline is rife for disruption. Enter software like Vividly, which lets you create life-sized 3D models of real estate. Walk through your creations, share them with colleagues or clients, and even convert existing 3D models from traditional architectural software. The world is your oyster! #4. Remodelling the Future Okay, so you’ve bought a house, but now you want to see what it would look like with granite countertops instead of marble; or maybe you want to knock down that wall into the kitchen and create a pass-through. If that’s the future you’re imagining, you’re not alone! So many people are entering this space that it’s hard to call out just one or two. will be taking on remodelling thanks to Apple’s ARKit, which will improve the quality and ease-of-use of previous offerings that IKEA has tested over the years. IKEA is a less proprietary company; no matter which construction company you’re using, or where you’re getting your fixtures, Cadsoft will create 3D renderings and provide them for viewing in a headset or on your computer. VR viewings avoids the mobile-first issue of realism, but adds on the headache of needing the right hardware, which is solved by the backup plan of computer mockups. Cadsoft The upside of this technology is that you don’t have to try to picture how a remodel will look; the downside being that you still need some imagination to turn these digital creations into their life-life alternatives. #5. The CAVE This technology is not technically being used for real estate today, but it has huge potential for future use-cases. CAVE is an open-source software system paired with projector hardware that primarily exists in university research settings. Think of it has a modern Holodeck — a large room whose walls are actually rear-projection screens or flat panel displays. The images on the walls are controlled by the motion of the person inside the CAVE, allowing a sense of real immersion as the room moves realistically along with the user. The applications for real estate are incredible. Imagine going to your realtor’s office, and instead of driving around the city to thirty showings, you could walk into the CAVE and see every home from there. You would walk around a pre-filmed environment, check out the layout, even peer into cupboards! As long as a camera captured it, you could view it. The strength of this technology is the ‘teleportation’ factor, and the ability to have more than one person experiencing the virtual environment at the same time. Downsides are that you’re still restricting to four walls and a small space, so things like moving up and down stairs will never feel entirely real. Plus, these setups require motion-capture technology and head-mounted displays, so comfort and setup would be a concern in a commercial environment.
