Focus . So why are we spending money to display multiple things simultaneously? If my email or social media feeds are available at a glance, then I’ll check them constantly. This isn’t just unnecessary, it’s . In a world of endless distractions, being able to focus on a single task for an extended period is a seriously valuable skill. Humans can only focus on one thing at a time counter-productive Deep work is becoming increasingly hard in our distraction filled economy, yet also becoming increasingly important and rare. Distractions stay out of sight, and thus, out of mind. Does this look like a place to focus on a task? Use software to make moving and resizing windows easier. My solution? . The Large Display Paradox Just use a single reasonably-sized monitor Even with handy window management software, multiple monitors present a problem: If I have two monitors, the content isn’t directly in front of me. I have to turn my head either right or left (particularly annoying when walking on a treadmill desk, as I often do — see pic below). I could place one monitor directly in front of me, but then the second monitor is even farther to the side — making it clearly a second-class citizen. This again leads to moving whatever I’m working on to the middle screen. As Barry Schwartz explores in “ ”, decision fatigue is a real problem. Sometimes, more is less. The Paradox of Choice “Choice has made us not freer but more paralyzed, not happier but more dissatisfied.” With a single screen, I eliminate decisions. Virtual Desktops For the Win Both Mac and Windows support virtual desktops now. On my Mac, I can 3 finger swipe to quickly switch between multiple virtual desktops. This takes less than a second and it doesn’t require me to turn my head and refocus my eyes on content in a different spot. But I don’t waste cycles on this arrangement either. The far left virtual desktop is always my browser, the one to the right is my editor. . A three finger swipe instantly switches between them — in no more time than it would take to turn my head and look at a separate monitor. As a side note, if you’re on a Mac, be sure to disable auto rearrange: Same Workflow When Remote I often work remote in coffee houses, libraries, public parks, outside on the deck, and on planes. I take ( ) everywhere. Since I work on a single screen at home, my workflow isn’t impacted when I’m away from my desk. I just keep using virtual desktops to get things done. my 15" MacBook Pro review Last week I enjoyed working from the beach without any impact to my normal workflow. When I had multiple monitors, I had to rearrange my windows every time I undocked my machine. Now there’s no friction when I undock. All windows remain maximized, and they remain in the same position on my virtual desktops. It’s like having an unlimited set of virtual monitors, that are always in the same position, wherever I work. My Preferred Monitor for Getting Things Done I prefer using a single 24" 4K. Why 24"? Because if you want to get actual work done, bigger isn’t necessarily better. 24" is large enough to display a single application full-screen. And it’s large enough to display two apps side-by-side in the rare instances that I truly need to see two things (I use on Mac and simply hit Win+arrow on Windows). However, 24" is small enough that you can maximize all applications without needing to move your head or eyes much to see the screen edges. Remember, maximize all the things. Maximized = focused. simultaneously BetterTouchTool Here’s my current set up: Dell 2415q on Ergotron Monitor Arm. Walking on a treadmill keeps me focused, fit, and awake during the day. I no longer struggle with comfy-chair-induced drowsiness. The treadmill rolls out of the way when I’m tired and ready to sit. Why 4K? High DPI reduces fatigue. Text is much crisper. And prices are finally reasonable, so if you don’t own a high DPI display yet, buy one. And a 24" 4K has more dots per inch than larger 4K screens, so it’s crisper. Any MacBook Pro built in the last few years can push a 4K display at 60hz over DisplayPort. Many recent Windows laptops can do so as well. So why do so many workers demand multiple monitors? After taking this photo, I literally hid my Windows machine behind the lectern because I was concerned I wouldn’t be taken seriously in a room of JavaScript developers who were running 99% Macs. Up until this point, I considered Macs to be a silly waste of money. But after this experience, I decided to purchase my first Mac to understand what, if anything, I was missing. Codemash 2015: PC And Angular. Codemash 2016: Mac and React. Seasons change! So Why Do Devs Run Macs? Here’s what I’ve found: Bash I prefer the Bash command line to Window’s alternatives like Powershell. Yes, you can run Bash on Windows, but obviously the filesystem underneath isn’t the same, so it’s ultimately not the same native experience. If you spend much time on the command line, a Unix-oriented OS is a win. The Unix philosophy of small composable tools never goes out of style. Hardware Quality The MBP is the nicest laptop hardware I’ve found. While there are many impressive Windows laptops, none I’ve tried quite match the build quality of a MBP. The force touch trackpad is a luxury I’d never want to leave. Mac screens handle glare better than the mirror-like touch-enabled screens on most of today’s PCs. This is a win for outdoor coding and working in the car. And the thermal qualities of the Mac’s aluminum chassis combined with the efficiency of macOS means Apple laptops often run cooler than equivalent PCs. Battery Life MacOS is more efficient than Windows, so battery life tends to rival the best Windows laptops. Reliable DPI Scaling DPI scaling is flawless on Mac. This is still not so on Windows 10, where some of my favorite apps have yet to add support. 4k on a Mac just plain works. Managed Ecosystem = Reliability Apple only supports macOS on a small list of devices that they alone create. In contrast, Windows must support literally 1000’s of devices that Microsoft didn’t create. This tends to make the Windows experience less consistent. Apple’s model typically leads to a more cohesive, efficient, and reliable experience (though admittedly are concerning). my issues with the brand new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar Long-term Support I know many people happily running old Apple machines on the latest version of macOS. That’s harder to do on Windows. For example, Lenovo never released an updated Windows 10 compatible video driver for my 3 year old Yoga 2 Pro. Windows laptop manufacturers often produce a device and then ignore ongoing driver upgrades and bug fixes. Apple’s small manicured hardware ecosystem helps assure long-term driver support. That said, it’s great to see Microsoft expanding their — it’s likely to enjoy the same long-term support as today’s Mac devices. Surface line Peripherals Superb peripherals like the provide rich gestures that mimic the MBP’s trackpad. This means I have the same powerful experience when docked as on the go. Thunderbolt supports daisy chaining displays. The new MacBook Pro boasts a compelling story: Dual 4K displays via a single cable. Why Do Developers Run Macs?

A developer’s take on the new 2016 Macbook Pro vs the 2015 Macbook Pro I purchased the new Macbook Pro (MBP for short, below) with Touch Bar one week ago. I chose the maxed out “standard” model for $2,799 at the local Apple store: 15" i7/2.7/16gb/512gb. I also own an early 2015 13" Macbook Pro with i5/2.9/16gb/512gb, so I’ll compare the two below. As a side note, there are many excellent Windows machines out there too, but . for a variety of reasons, many developers are loyal to Macs The Good: . It’s notably brighter, which is wonderful for outdoor work. The reduced bezel size is also a nice touch. While other specs may trump it, the rich colors and brightness combined with it’s low glare make it one of the best displays out there for real world use. Superb screen As expected, the i7 combined with the much faster SSD makes this machine very responsive. I was happy with my 13" i5, but the new MBP is notably faster. Nearly every interaction is smooth and immediate. This is a really luxurious way to interact with a device. It’s seriously fast. One extreme example: An npm install that took 2 minutes on the 13" i5 required only 1:05 on the new 15" i7. It’s fast and luxurious. I open the lid, tap it, and start immediately. Just like an iPhone…except when it doesn’t work. See below. TouchID is mostly great. The 15" feels the same weight as my 2015 13". And due to packaging improvements, its footprint is quite reasonable. I’ve had no issues using the 15" in coach on flights this week. I use this on my lap and it feels as natural as my 13". I‘m a fan of 13" laptops, but this 15" is compact and light enough to change my mind. And in benchmarks, it’s returning better battery life than comparable new 13" models due to the much larger battery. The size and weight is wow. Early 2015 13" on top of new 15" Despite running an i7, its typical running temp is comparable to my i5 13". Like my 13", the fan virtually never runs during normal work. The temperature varies between cool and barely warm under my normal browsing and coding work. See below for the story on heavy loads. Cool and silent under light loads. I didn’t care about laptop speakers until now. These are actually good enough to use! Who knew that was possible? I’m reaching for my headphones less because the sound is sufficient for casual listening. Given, my beloved sound much better, but shows and casual background music on the new MBP are quite enjoyable. The improvement over my 2015 13" is almost like moving to a bluetooth speaker. Bravo Apple! Impressive speakers. QC35 headphones The Bad: This sounds odd, but it’s unnecessarily large. The size leads occasional palm rejection issues, which means the mouse occasionally jumps around and even accidental clicks from my palm occasionally occur. I never once had this issue on my 2015 model. Nor did I ever wish for a larger trackpad — I’m only using a small portion of this thing. Hopefully software updates can iron out these rare, but annoying issues. Edit: A recent software update has resolved this. As a side note, the finish is also noticably less slick than my 2015. I can hear my fingers glides across it. Edit: The surface has gotten slicker with continued use and I no longer notice this issue much. But my 2015s Trackpad was still a bit smoother. The trackpad is big. too The trackpad on the old 13" was big enough. The machine reports 9 hours of battery remaining immediately after I’ve started up, yet consistently falls short of that number. I get 4–8 hours per charge. My typical use this week has been web browsing, coding in , occasional music streaming, bluetooth headphones and trackpad, and medium brightness. That is respectable for a 15" laptop with these specs, but notably short of Apple’s “Up to 10 hours” claim. Edit: After 3 months, I’m getting around 6 hours when browsing, coding, and working in office. Life is highly dependent on screen brightness. I’d get around 7 hours on my old 13. Battery life is okay, but short of expectations. VSCode When I first purchased, I was multi-tasking by installing multiple apps, downloading many GB of data on Dropbox, and so on. This taxed the system hard and it was very hot, with fans running (albeit quietly). During this period I had multiple wifi connectivity issues, (though these admittedly could have been from my router since I’ve had no issues while traveling). I was concerned about the temperature, but after the initial set up, it has been a cool operator. Edit: It’s virtually always cool now. Only exception is when I render video. Hot under heavy loads. . On day one, the wifi disconnected five times in four hours. Thankfully, since then, Wifi has been rock solid while traveling, despite that concerning first day. Bluetooth failed to pair many devices at first. After pairing, Bluetooth continues to drop connections occasionally. Edit: I isolated the issue to a single old bluetooth keyboard that also has connectivity issues with my 2015 Mac, so likely not the new Mac to blame. Bugs Touch ID often isn’t provided as an option when I open the lid. When I am prompted, it occasionally doesn’t respond at all. When connected to an external monitor, I am typically forced to open the lid and login via touch ID — the password field literally isn’t provided as an option. Edit: Turns out the password field isn’t displayed, but if I start typing it shows up. Spotlight has frozen more than once, requiring a reboot. Activity monitor was regularly crashing, but has recently stopped doing so. And the aforementioned palm rejection issues mean the cursor occasionally jumps to another part of the screen. Needless to say, for a nearly $3,000 machine, this list is hard to accept. So much so that I’m seriously considering returning the machine. The bright side is everything above can potentially be resolved by future software updates. The Maybe: I did not buy this device for the touch bar. I was completely indifferent to the feature. But fear not developers, . The provided functions work well. Changing brightness and volume via the bar is slick. It’s a single touch motion that feels natural. Thoughtful shortcuts when doing screenshots are appreciated. Man page shortcuts display when in the terminal. And try working with photos in the Photos app. That’s when the power really clicked for me. The touch bar shows promise. you can set the traditional F keys to always show for any app Nice touch: Playback controls with scrubbing when you load youtube.com I appreciate the ability to customize a row of keys to my tastes. For now, , but the story here is only going to get better as software developers find new ways to harness its power for macros and complex interactions. I believe most pro users who know keyboard shortcuts are unlikely to reach for the touch bar much I find the keys as easy to use as physical buttons. I could never hit the F keys without looking anyway, and the escape key remains easy to hit without looking. . Despite all the drama, I’m happily working in vim**.** No complaints. You can even tap the blank touch bar area to the left of the escape key and it will register As an owner of a touch screen Windows PC, I understand why Apple isn’t embracing touch screen PCs. I virtually never reach for the screen on my Yoga laptop. The click targets are too small and it’s faster to use the keyboard. Apple is right — you can’t simply add touch to a UI designed for a mouse. In contrast, the touchbar is a customizable keyboard. Despite its currently limited use cases, touch bar is likely to be a big win in the future. I may grow to enjoy it. It’s certainly better than the Macbook’s with a bit more travel and a more sturdy feel. But I currently prefer the 2015 keyboard. The new keyboard feels too shallow for my taste, and I prefer the “softer” feel of the 2015 keyboard when bottoming out the keys. I’m learning to simply type lighter on this new keyboard, but I currently prefer keyboards that I can mash without feeling punished. Make sure to try this out at length in the store. The keyboard is good, if not great. I purchased Apple’s multimedia adapter and it works flawlessly. I’m running a 4K display over HDMI and it looks wonderful. However, I’ve already reached for multiple USB devices only to realize I need to plug in an adapter. This is an ongoing annoyance, so I’ve purchased a few . There are some compelling available as well. Dongle life. USB-C to USB-A adapters USB-C docks Finally, there is an advantage to going USB-C: I enjoy being able to plug in power from either side. It effectively makes the cord longer and avoids awkward and ugly cord routing issues. I miss magsafe, but there are already aftermarket solutions available. Bottom line The next year or two will be a more compelling time to upgrade. I expect to see 32GB of RAM, more efficient modern processors, improved battery life, broad industry-wide USB-C support and docks, an OLED screen, and richer support for touch bar in MacOS apps. A Week with the new Macbook Pro with Touch Bar

React .14 introduced a simpler way to define components called stateless functional components. These components use plain JavaScript functions. Here’s the before and after in ES6: 27 lines vs 21 lines isn’t the big story… Also, note that the nested `sayHi` function on the right should admittedly be avoided for performance reasons. See comments for why. The differences above may seem subtle at first glance, but cutting the noise is a win. big Here’s why. **No Class Needed**Frankly, I think . But I do agree that plain functions are generally preferable, and eliminating the class related cruft like extends and the constructor in the example above are a nice win. the drama around ES6 classes is overblown As you can see above, the stateless component is just a function. Thus, all the annoying and confusing quirks with Javascript’s keyword are avoided. The entire component becomes easier to understand without the keyword. Just compare the click handler in each approach: No this Keyword this this onClick={this.sayHi.bind(this)}>Say Hi</a>onClick={sayHi}>Say Hi</a> Note that the bind keyword isn’t necessary for the stateless component. Dumping classes eliminates the need for calling bind to pass the context around. Given how confusing JavaScript’s keyword is to many developers, avoiding it is a nice win. this this Oh, as a side note, there are five different ways to handle binding in React. . Here’s a short post on the merits of each approach **Enforced Best Practices**Stateless functional components are useful for . Presentational components focus on the UI rather than behavior, so it’s important to avoid using state in presentational components. Instead, . Stateless functional components don’t support state or lifecycle methods. Why? Because it protects from laziness. dumb/presentational components state should be managed by higher-level “container” components, or via Flux/Redux/etc This is a good thing. See, it’s always tempting to add state to a presentational component when you’re in a hurry. It’s a quick way to hack in a feature. Since stateless functional components don’t support local state, you can’t easily hack in some state in a moment of laziness. Thus, stateless functional components programatically enforce keeping the component pure. You’re forced to put state management where it belongs: in higher level container components. **High Signal-to-Noise Ratio**As you can see in the image above, stateless functional components require less typing. This translates less noise. As I discuss in “ ”, great code maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio. The 27 line component became 21 lines, a ~20% reduction. You can go a step further on simple components. With a single line return statement, you can omit the return and curly braces. If you do this and also use ES6 destructuring on props, the result is nearly all signal: Writing Code for Humans It’s a function that takes a parameter and returns markup. Nice. Seriously, could this feasibly be any cleaner? If you destructure your props in ES6 as I did in the example above, then all the data you use is now specified as a simple function argument. This means you also get improved code completion/intellisense support compared to class-based components. Code Completion/Intellisense We all know . When you use ES6 destructuring with your stateless components, the argument list clearly conveys your component’s dependencies. Thus, it’s easy to spot components that need attention. In this case, you can either break up the component or rethink the data structures you’re passing around. Sometimes a long list of props can be easily resolved by passing an object instead. But if the props aren’t logically related enough to justify a single object, then it’s likely time to refactor the component into multiple separate components. Bloated Components and Poor Data Structures Are Easily Spotted a function that takes a lot of parameters is a code smell **Easy to Understand**As we’ve just seen, when you see a stateless functional component, you know it’s simply a function that takes props and spits out HTML. Even if it contains a lot of markup and nested functions inside the render, it’s conceptually simple. It’s a pure function. This leads to the next big win… **Easy to Test**Since it’s a pure function, your assertions are very straightforward: Given these values for props, I expect it to return this markup. So for the example HelloWorld component, I can assert that when the render function is called with the value of ‘Cory’ for props.name, it returns a div with ‘Hi Cory’ inside. With React’s stateless functional components, each component can be easily tested in isolation. No mocking, state manipulation, special libraries, or tricky test harnesses are needed. Finally, stateless functional components may soon offer improved performance as well. Since there’s no state or lifecycle methods to worry about, the React team plans to avoid unnecessary checks and memory allocations in future releases. Performance : With React 16.6+, you can declare “pure” functional components via . And with Hooks in 16.7, functional components transpile smaller too. Update React.memo Even today, functional components transpile down to less code than class components, which means functional components = smaller bundles: Class components compile down to at least 20 lines of code. The equalivent functional component requires only 6 lines of code. Result? Smaller bundles. Improved performance with superior syntax, testability, and readability? Sign me up! Any downsides? Yep. NOTE: They loved our product but also informed us that a WordPress security solution has never before appeared on AppSumo. To be honest, it made us nervous. There was no way of knowing how Sumolings would react to a product like ours. So we kept our hopes low, really low — as we said earlier, we expected our sales to max out at 500 deals. It really made us hesitant. Moreover, we didn’t like the idea of giving away our $259 yearly Business Plan at a throwaway price of $49 for LIFETIME! In the end, we settled on seeing how things would play out and took a leap of faith. Pre-Launch Hustle 28th February — that’s when we were told the AppSumo-MalCare deal page would go live. And we only had a week to prepare. A week is a little too less to prepare for launch on a platform like AppSumo. We had heard people taking up to a month just to prepare. Saying that we were a bit scared is an understatement. Keeping our fears in check, our tiny team of 13 people huddled into a small room and brainstormed for hours at length. In the end, a battle plan was drawn to take on the AppSumo Goliath. We had our priorities straight and started hustling to prepare for the AppSumo promotion: 1. Customer On-Boarding Experience Imagine being really impressed by a product, buying it and then constantly getting 404’s. The excitement is quickly replaced by annoyance! We knew once the deal page goes live, hundreds of customers will sign up onto our system simultaneously. This could cause the system to fail and hinder the onboarding process. Having a seamless onboarding process is significant because it will lead to customer satisfaction. With this in mind, the first thing that we did was ramp up our onboarding experiences (i.e. sign up, add sites, installing the plugin, etc.) for new users. 2. Support for All Ideally, customers want a good product combined with good support. Having built a good product, we wanted to provide the best customer support to new MalCare users as well as potential buyers. The AppSumo promotion runs for only 2 weeks, and during that time, literally, thousands of questions pour in from all corners of the universe. Being a small team of 13 people, the prospect of answering thousands of people was daunting. But we knew that providing awesome support will help us overcome any shortcomings in other areas. Moreover, we were looking forward to any feedback on the product or the documentation that would be possible if only we were doing proper support duties. Thus we settled on providing responsive support to everyone who reaches out to us. We figured out a way to provide support round the clock by dividing our small team of 13 into 6 groups. As a result, 2 people were on support duty for 4 hours each day. 3. Creating Supporting Collaterals Using a new product can be a bit of hassle. Having the right documents in place can make things easier for the customer. Earlier we spoke of providing support to thousands of new customers. Thanks to the effort we put into creating collaterals, whenever needed, the support personnel were able to point customers to the right documentation. It helped fast-track the process and enabled us to handle more customers with the same responsiveness. In a very short span of time, we created 3 types of documents: i. Pre-Deal Documents The documents explained how to use the product efficiently. Help documents with videos covering 53 questions and answers. An exhaustive FAQ, covering all queries about our product. It helps customers gain a better understanding of MalCare’s usability. FAQ covered 119 questions and answers. ii. Deal Documents We created — (38 questions and answers) and with videos. The FAQ page offered a better understanding of the deal and the product. And the Help Doc covered specifically how to redeem the deal codes. Help Documentations and FAQs specific to this deal AppSumo-MalCare Deal FAQ Page AppSumo Stackable Deal Help Doc Another extremely important internal document we created was the . In the first few days, we noticed a pattern in questions. Essentially, many Sumolings were asking the same kind of questions. By creating a common answer to those common questions, we were able to not only answer on time, but it also ensured that the team wasn’t giving conflicting answers. Common Question & Answer sheet iii. Post-Deal Documents Feedbacks, no matter how harsh, are essential for the growth of a product. Once the deal was over, we went back to the general Help Documents and FAQs. Thanks to the feedback, we were able to identify shortcomings in the documents. We set about making these documents better. The Maddening First Three Days of Launch You can very well imagine how our hearts were pumping when the went live on February 28th. The first three days were the most intense and also a very draining experience. Here’s a glimpse of what took place in those initial days. deal page 1. Support Was An Emotional Roller Coaster As soon as the page went live, a floodgate to queries opened. Questions started pouring in like a violent waterfall. With the documents ready, we had the tools to tackle the questions but the pace was too much to keep up with. Despite facing hurdles, onwards we moved. We ended up supporting over 4000 new and potential customers. That’s more than one year worth of support in 2 just weeks! Support was an emotionally intense journey but we managed to answer most of the people and help them out in any way we could. Chatter on Facebook Groups Sent Us Back to the Drawing Board Over the past eight years, AppSumo has managed to build an incredible community who are very active and vocal. Some of those lessons are as follows: 1. Bad Reviews Do Good Every product has its shortcomings. Even with that knowledge, being told that our product lacks a certain feature or isn’t good enough, hurts. A lot. For a number of Sumolings MalCare didn’t live up to their expectations and they were very vocal about it. But at the end, we learned that bad reviews are not the end of the world. If anything, it tells us there’s room for improvement. By choosing to take bad reviews positively, we were able to see a number of ways we could improve the product in the future. 2. Ride on Reputation When buying anything online, one is always sceptical about new relatively unknown products. Fear of little-known businesses who are giving away services at a throwaway price is common. Which is why some potential customers reached out to our support personals enquiring the company’s past and it’s future plans.
