With gas prices skyrocketing, the search for savings has become increasingly urgent. Apps that save you money on gas may offer some help, but how much help—and for whom—turns out to be far from clear. What’s less clear is how exactly the app has chosen to reward those customers, and who benefits the most. How Does the App Work? When you open the Upside app, it pulls up a map and a list of offers from participating gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores. For each gas station, the app shows you a price per gallon. To be clear, that’s not necessarily the price you’ll pay at the pump but rather the effective price after weighing in whatever cash-back offer is being promoted. You also might not see your local low-priced gas station on the app, since Upside only partners with select stations. Once you find a gas station to fill up, you can “claim” the offer in the app. You have to use a debit or credit card to pay—not cash or EBT. Otherwise, you won’t receive the cash-back reward. After you pay the full posted price at the pump, you can either submit a photo of your receipt or use the “Check In” feature. The promotional reward will then be added to your balance in the app. According to , the company and the merchant split some combination of the cost of the promotion. materials on Upside’s website You can then cash out your earnings to your bank or trade them in for digital gift cards to places like Applebee’s or Amazon. Some of these deals require that you’ve accrued at least $10 in cash-back rewards, and for cashing out smaller amounts to your bank and PayPal, so you might have to use the app several times to hit the minimum. When Ron Walter, a gig worker who runs a blog called , signed up for the Upside app last year, he said it took some getting used to. It’s unclear, ultimately, who gets the bigger deals and who doesn’t. And the company’s CEO, Kinnier, has said different things in different forums about how the algorithm works. Kinnier told The Markup through an email from a corporate spokesperson in mid-April that the app has earned users a total of $200 million in cash back and merchants $350 million in “new, incremental” profit. But a major part of how much you might get depends on the data the app collects about your behavior. Upside comes up with discounts for each user based on anonymized data like customers’ “card numbers, location, timestamps, ticket sizes, and more,” according to . company documents Beyond data about you, Kinnier told The Markup, other factors, like nearby gas stations’ sign prices and data about the merchants, also contribute to promotions. Kinnier said in the April email to The Markup that the full list of factors used to calculate promotions that people are offered is proprietary and not shared with users. Some of the promotional materials on the app’s website suggest that loyalty to certain gas stations plays a big part—but in the opposite way from what you may expect from a rewards program. In an undated featured on the app’s website called “The Power of Personalization: How Does Treating Customers Differently Maximize Profit?” white paper Kinnier wrote that “most loyalty programs cannibalize the merchant’s profit by offering promotions on things the loyal customer was going to buy anyway,” explaining that it’s more profitable to offer bigger discounts to infrequent or new customers. “If your loyal user starts using GetUpside and we can’t increase their purchases at your site … their offers will go to zero,” a said. “While we hate to lose a user, we are willing to do so if the customer is already buying all their purchases from your business.” FAQ previously posted on the company’s website But when The Markup contacted Upside in mid-April, Kinnier had a very different message. Kinnear said, “Users are always able to earn cash back at our participating locations.” After The Markup asked for additional clarification, he responded through a corporate spokesperson that the FAQ on the company’s website stating that loyal users stop receiving discounts was inaccurate and the company would correct it. It has since been changed. “They’re telling the gas stations, ‘Don’t worry. We’re not going to take away your high-paying customers. We will bring more price-sensitive customers by adding to your business, not subtracting from it,’ ” said Marshall Steinbaum, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Utah. “You can basically price-discriminate through that mechanism.” Ultimately, Upside’s pricing data is not public, nor is its algorithm, so it’s not possible to determine who actually gets deals and who doesn’t. Does Upside Sell My Data? Upside shares only enough data with its partners to confirm a transaction, so that users can get their rewards, Kinnier told The Markup in the email, adding that “​​each user has a uniquely generated identifier to learn more about their behavior without jeopardizing their privacy.” No user information is shared externally, and Upside doesn’t sell data, Kinnier said. Garphil Julien, a research associate at Open Markets Institutes, said that it appears what Upside could do with its personalized promotions is charge customers the maximum price they’re willing to pay. Shoppers struggled to push their overloaded carts, stocking up for Armageddon. Ryan’s Cadillac sat idling in the No Stopping zone. Sitting next to him was Bobby, his muscle turning to fat but still good-looking enough for his role as wingman. Behind Ryan sat Steve, grateful for the Cadillac’s rear leg room. The curb-side rear door opened and the last of the four ‘Messketeers’ took his seat. Of the four, Dave was the nerd, able to play football and score decent grades, and thus the least of the group. “Slick ride, Ryan,” Dave announced. “Are you going to have to take it back?” Bobby answered for Ryan. “Maybe. Maybe not. Depends on whether that meteor hits.” “Asteroid,” Dave corrected. “Not meteor.” “It won’t hit,” Ryan added. “They never do.” “What if it does?” Steve asked. “What if this is the last weekend?” “We squeeze a lifetime into it,” Bobby said. The Last 3 Days (05): Even Armageddon Has an Upside

DynamoDB can be hard to grasp if you come from the relational database world — but the benefits for serverless apps are too good to ignore. In the path to serverless, one of the hardest parts has been getting to grips with DynamoDB, the mysterious Amazon NoSQL database that’s so simple to learn it takes six months to master. It’s a beguiling, frustrating, wondrous tool that alternately has me crying with joy or yelling obscenities at my mouse. I’ve worked all my career with various relational databases, so it’s been to hard to walk away from baked-in patterns and practices and try to think about data in a completely different way. I’ve read many pieces about , , and if you try it, . But we stuck with it and found it was essential for our serverless data needs. how it wasn’t for everyone possibly isn’t for anyone you’ll end up switching back to RDS Credit: https://dzone.com/articles/cloud-data-services-sprawl-its-complicated Why not just use RDS? There are a few reasons why relational databases and serverless don’t mix so well. First, if your function scales up dramatically — and it can, that’s the whole point — classic databases aren’t typically designed to handle large numbers of new connections appearing. Back in the good ol’ days of when we had servers, these connections were shared by many end-users since the middle layer might use a single connection per server. This isn’t necessarily the case in the FaaS world, where your provider can spin up new instances of your function as needed and you might more connections appearing than you expected. Second, database connections use ‘keep alive’ pings to, well, keep the connection alive — but your Lambda function freezes when it’s not in use so this stops. To the database, this looks like the connection has gone away when it stops responding. In using RDS, you’re forcing a connection method that natively just doesn’t work well with Lambda. Third, relational databases don’t scale automatically. Many have phenomenal architectures and ways to handle scaling but it’s not automatic. If you’re in the business of building scalable web/mobile apps, you can spend much more time managing a database that you might think. DynamoDB is a truly managed option when the design is right, and you’ll really appreciate this if you’re coding an app where the usage is spiking. Still, RDS usage is probably fine for low-use serverless apps but if you have any potential to scale up quickly, it’s all a little tenuous, compared with the drop-in “it works” world of DynamoDB. It’s possible that Aurora Serverless may bridge this gap when it gets out of technical preview, but so far there’s no indication that the interaction will be different. High availability and consistent performance are the top two features, and these are achieved at the cost of ‘traditional’ database properties such as consistency and transaction support. original DynamoDB paper As a result, DynamoDB shines when providing data support in serverless apps where the data needs are separated by user — user profiles, shopping carts, private collections of items. Your users can access and update these items at practically unlimited scale and your only choke point will be the throughput allocated on a table (which itself is auto-scalable). If you’re planning to launch a web or mobile app with potentially rapid growth, DynamoDB’s primary design features will serve you well. You don’t have to worry about managing connections, scaling or latency — it will, for the most part, ‘just work’. Still you have to be careful where users are accessing common data, even in simple cases— lookup tables or counters, for example — since the partitioning and throughput model can cause some unexpected side-effects. The World’s Fastest Primer on DynamoDB. DynamoDB is designed to give you very consistent performance in an almost maintenance-free way if you create the tables properly, so it’s a natural fit for serverless apps (yet surprisingly hard to get right): Compared to relational databases: tables are tables, records are items and fields are attributes. An attribute can be a flat or nested JSON structure. Each item can have different attributes but no attributes can be a zero-length string. The size of the table is potentially unlimited but access patterns are important to make that work well (the ‘hot key’ problem). You can change or update any data except the partition and sorts keys, and your choice of those keys is a critical design choice. The keys form a hash that you need to ensure is randomly accessed throughout your data set, ideally. You pay for throughput (RCUs/WCUs) and storage space used. When you query on an item, the size of the item matters since you’ll be charged for the whole thing (even if you filter out or return a subset of the data). Local Secondary Indexes must use the original partition key (but different sort key) and must be defined when the table is created. They also share the table’s throughput (often forgotten). Global Secondary Indexes can be created later on a new hash key but use their own throughput. Hashes do not have to be unique. The naming is unhelpful and neither index works the way you would expect. There are no traditional SQL query operators like sum, average or count, no group by clauses. Mostly it’s (projections) (tables) where (partition ID, sort key and filters). And then the rest is up to you. select something from somewhere some condition is satisfied Consistency is something you pay for if you really need it. Without it, you might find a query returns stale data if an update happened. In many cases this doesn’t matter but you wouldn’t want to run a banking app this way. just Some query patterns work really well — shopping carts, for example. You have a single item in a carts table mapped to a user ID, containing a nested JSON list of items in the cart. It’s great because it will scale easily, the lookup will be blazingly fast and the eventual consistency model shines in this kind of use case. Even some classic relational database patterns are fairly obvious — like returning a list of orders for a customer. Here you simply make the customerId the partition key, the orderId the sort key, and you can quickly pull the list of orders. But… if you want to know how many orders or the average size of an order… well, we can’t do . In fact we can’t even tell you the total number of items in the table without a table scan or an insanity-induced counter system. Welcome to the upside-down world of DynamoDB. that Think of your DynamoDB table as a filing cabinet Coming from relational databases, I love tables and believe they can solve most of the world’s ills (well almost). But what DynamoDB calls a table doesn’t seem much like a table — it doesn’t have columns, required values (beyond the keys) and the indexing behavior reveals it’s not much like a table. I think it’s more like a filing cabinet. Imagine this: DynamoDB is run by the world’s fastest librarian — Alice — who bends the laws of physics and the Dewey Decimal System, capable of finding and organizing your data in a dependably snappy way. When you create a table, you tell the librarian two things — an ID (partition) and a range (sort key) — and she sets up some space for you. A DynamoDB table is a filing cabinet where the partition key highlights which drawer to search, and the sort key refers to the number of files in that drawer. The file itself can contain many documents or nothing. But critically when the librarian comes back with your files, she doesn’t look inside, peek at the data or even care what’s there. The size of the drawer is limited (10GB), and can only be opened and closed so fast (3000 RCUs/1000WCUs) of the number of files. If you go over these limits, Alice will find you another drawer. But once you have more than a single drawer, you will shrink back to one drawer. regardless never Alice will always find space for your information but is motivated by charging you for the combined weight of all the files brought back for each of your requests. The librarian does not care if the files contain things you didn’t want. If you tell your librarian from the outset that you need another index, you’ll be given an LSI — this has the same partition key (drawer) but allows you to put more than one label on each file. This is why the LSI uses the same throughput resources as the main table, because it’s part of that table. But once you have an allocated filing cabinet, what happens when you ask Alice for another index? You’ve already been set up so the librarian does the next best thing — she finds you another filing cabinet that contains a read-only duplicate of some of the items in the main drawer. This is why GSIs use additional resources outside of the table, and why you cannot update items retrieved via a GSI. It’s a brave new world. For our team, learning serverless apps has been about discovering the right tools for the job. DynamoDB has provided a critical piece in allowing consistent performance and reliable scaling in customer-facing data access, but there is a significant learning curve in getting the design right.

The upside down world of DynamoDB

HT is the Huobi Token. It’s the BNB for Binance’s biggest competitor. They do similar things, share some similar purpose, but HT’s market cap is over 10 times smaller whilst Huobi’s average daily volume is typically around 50% of Binance’s — there’s a huge discrepancy. If you’ve been following their moves, you would have noticed that Huobi have been making very similar moves to Binance, from launching their own token, to creating their own incubator. Where they differ though, is their aggressive overseas expansion. Huobi have recently launched a native Korean exchange and have plans to introduce KRW pairs on the exchange in the next few months and in June will launch Huobi Japan with plans to offer JPY pairs soon after. Following on from this, they have been preparing for some time to enter the US market with a US-only version of Huobi, biding their time and working closely with regulators to have the opportunity to be one of the few reputable exchanges to offer real USD pairings to US citizens. Now, if their goals come to fruition, and they are offering token pairs on Huobi Pro, KRW pairs on Huobi KR, USD pairs on Huobi US, and JPY pairs on Huobi JP (Japan has the largest Bitcoin volume in the world, contrary to popular belief) there’s no telling how big they can get and how high HT can soar. HADAX is Huobi’s new decentralised exchange. It is ‘autonomous’, in that all tokens listed are chosen for by the community, by voting for tokens using HT. The top 3 tokens get listed, and if you have voted for one of them, you receive an airdropped reward for that currency AND you’re still refunded your HT at the end of the voting round. What’s unique about this is that there are ways to earn money from it simply by holding and voting, similar to microtasks. There are project popping up like Gems and Earn.com which pay users for microtasks, and even entire websites/communities built up around finding airdrops, well HT in a way does this too. Voting for winning projects on HADAX can act as an extra revenue stream from the rewards granted to the voters who back winning projects. This is a function inbuilt into the voting system, and the rewards are determined by the team when they put themselves up for voting. Additionally, HT is used for trading fee discounts and insurance. As displayed above, instead of burning their tokens like Binance does, Huobi will buy back HT on the open market commensurate to their profits and add the bought tokens to a ‘User Protection Fund’ to act as an insurance in the event of any security mishaps, and as such, buying HT is a way of insuring your own assets (if you store them on the exchange). The market buys from Huobi as a result of this policy will also add to the potential price appreciation for the token in addition to the airdropped rewards from successful HADAX voting. Comparing the price of BNB with HT and then comparing their respective trade volumes, it’s clear that HT is currently very undervalued. What’s more is that Kucoin’s equivalent, KCS, has double the market cap of HT despite Huobi’s volume being 32 times larger than Kucoin’s. It’s clear that the Huobi token has a lot of growing to do. I remember when Binance was first introduced in June last year and I was told about BNB — I had no idea how big it could get. I definitely am not planning to make the same mistake twice. When you invest, you find projects that will likely grow and succeed, then buy their tokens, stake those tokens for passive income, delegate them for rewards, or deposit them into liquidity pools for a portion of fees and perhaps incentives from using them. When you do this, it’s like earning dividends or interest and recycling the profits back into the market to compound month after month, like a snowball. You can also leverage your tokens in other ways, for example, to buy land or items in a metaverse, participate in play-to-earn games, mint NFTs, become a validator, run a node, and participate in the communities that grow around the tokens. Both make money in different ways You can do well with either approach, but you need to pick one. What drives success in one approach will drive failure in the other. For example, as an investor, you will lock up your tokens for weeks or months for passive rewards and income. Free crypto! That’s terrible if you’re a trader. It defeats the whole point! You don’t want to keep the tokens. You want to sell them as soon as possible! On the other hand, when you lock up your tokens, you have to accept all the volatility that comes your way. You have to sit through big upswings and downswings. Some altcoins will go up or down 50% in a week, sometimes in a day. When you need to sell, it may not be on your terms. As a trader, you will buy after prices go up and sell after prices drop. That may fly in the face of the adage, “buy low, sell high,” but that is not a trading strategy. When you trade, you may buy high to sell higher or sell low and then short the market. As one trader put it, you play for the middle of the field, not the red zone. This makes no sense for an investor. The whole point is to build a position before the market turns so that you can capture limitless upside. Traders can't expose their capital like that. They need to wait until there's less upside because they need clarity about the market's direction. In other words, you can't trade and invest with the same money. Pick one. Options abound Some people split their portfolios into a separate trading account and investment account. Others take an investor’s approach but try to time their entries and exits. Imagine discovering an investment that goes up 50% on average each year with occasional big drops that you can buy for even further gains. Would you buy it? No. What if that asset went up 10% on average each year? Would you buy it? Yes. Chances are, you already have. I’m talking about Bitcoin. You pay a high price for a cheery consensus That may sound weird. Stupid, even. Who would turn down a 50% opportunity in exchange for a 10% opportunity? The US stock market only gives you 7% annualized. I agree. Yet, that’s what people do when they buy Bitcoin during bull markets like today’s. They don’t buy Bitcoin for $16,000, $32,000, $48,000, or $64,000. Instead, they buy it for $80,000 or more. They heard some people got ridiculously rich with Bitcoin and think they can do it, too. Two years ago, maybe. That was during the depths of a wretched crypto bear market. Now? One Bitcoin is worth more than the average US worker’s annual salary. Bitcoin’s market cap is almost $2 trillion. Most people can’t afford to buy enough Bitcoin to get rich, and those who already have Bitcoin don’t have enough upside to see the massive multiples necessary to retire their bloodlines. A letdown, if you want it to be You won’t find such realistic expectations on social media or the email solicitations you get from other crypto gurus. Some tell you “banana zone will send prices to the moon” and “S2F” predicts a $500,000 bitcoin in 2025. Others admit the chance to get rich with Bitcoin has passed, but tell you you need to buy smaller cryptos with bloated market caps and massive selling from insiders. Nobody will pay $2,500 for a newsletter subscription or spend 50 hours reading investment blogs for a 50% annualized return, even though that beats most traders and every professional fund manager. They’ll gladly pay as much or more for five altcoin picks that will make you $5 million or a secret strategy to make a quick fortune. Only one outcome is realistic, but you pay more for the fantasy. Cryptocurrency is a marathon masquerading as a sprint. They sell you on the sprint, but the real gains come from the marathon. Your best bet This is not what you're supposed to believe. Consensus opinion told you to buy above $50,000 in 2021, sell at $40,000 in 2022, and buy again at $32,000 in 2023. With that approach, a $50,000 investment would have grown to $75,000 by July 2024. That’s a 50% return in three years! Way better than the S&P 500's 16% return over that time. At today’s price of $90,000, you’re at 60% gains. Boom! You still come out way ahead of the S&P 500’s 25% return to date. Feels great, right? Your best financial advisors can barely beat the stock market. You crushed them. You gained 60% in three years! Fun fact: If you had bought Bitcoin blindly, on a fixed schedule, in a fixed amount, regardless of circumstances, you would have bought at an average price of roughly $40,000 for a 123% gain. Virtually all industries can benefit from artificial intelligence (AI), but few see improvements as meaningful as healthcare. While medical AI faces considerable obstacles, it’s hard to ignore its potential. Applications in chronic disease management are particularly noteworthy. Roughly 129 million people in the U.S. have a chronic health condition. Despite many of these diseases being treatable, they’re also behind five of the 10 most common causes of death. This insight into the future helps patients and doctors understand the situation so they can better decide how to treat the condition. These predictions become increasingly reliable as AI gathers additional data. Personalized Healthcare Once treatment begins, AI can improve health outcomes by tailoring care plans to individual patients.
