By all means, this is not the kind of venture a fractured world economy with low time preference, such as ours, can handle. This is not like launching a start-up in your garage to profit from quick user aggregation in the next ten months. This needs big planning by big multinational corporations supported by multiple governments. The level of dedication would be as big as with the ITER nuclear fusion project. And the risk would be just as big. With ITER, we risk ending up with running costs of billions of dollars that only return millions of dollars worth of energy profit. With a solar parking business, the energy is worth trillions of dollars, alright, but it may fry your investment to Kingdom come if you do not navigate well the treachery that is being in outer space while so close to the sun. I got introduced to the concept of todo lists early in my career. The idea sounded simple and interesting, so I decided to give it a try. I started putting everything on my mind into a to-do list. It worked well initially. After all, I had only a few responsibilities. So, putting them on a piece of paper and marking each one as I progressed didn’t require much planning and effort. I would glance at the list at the beginning of each day and tackle each task one by one. Todo lists worked like a magic formula—writing tasks down ensured I didn’t miss anything, knowing I had it all in one place led to less stress and anxiety, and the best part was the feeling of satisfaction from seeing those tick marks on my todo list which I believe kept me happy and motivated. As I grew in my career, five tasks on my to-do list turned into 20, 30, 40…and so on. Different types of responsibilities with different expectations, both at work and at home, were overwhelming. So, I kept adding everything to my to-do list, and before I knew it, it was crammed with more things than I could accomplish. A long list of things to do made it harder to pick something meaningful and valuable and get started on it. I would stare at the endless list, pick tasks at random, and try to do as much as I could during the day. But in spite of working long hours, I felt defeated at the end of the day—my work was less impactful and more exhausting, and I still had a ton of things on my to-do list that kept crying for my attention. Not accomplishing as much as I expected to was demotivating at first. But I wasn’t ready to give up. I knew the problem wasn’t my to-do list but my process. So I decided to try a bunch of different strategies—some worked, others didn’t. Here are the five practices to put your to-do list to best use based on my experience. But dumping everything from your mind to the list is just a start. Simply writing everything down won’t help you stay productive. To make the most of this to-do list, you need to turn it from a bunch of meaningless line items to a more meaningful action-oriented list. Creating a to-do list does not mean you have to tick every single item on it. You need to declutter and organize it in a way that makes it easy to spot and get started on more impactful work. Your task list isn’t a tool for getting everything done. Rather, it’s a tool that will ensure you get the right things done. Group 4: A useful practice when doing this activity is to color code tasks—use a different color for each group. One look at the to-do list, and you’ll get a snapshot of how your tasks are spread—do you have a long list of inconsequential activities? Is a large part of your to-do list focused on important future-looking activities or reacting to the urgent? Are you saving time by delegating enough, or are you too afraid to let go? With your to-do list organized, it’s now ready for some action. Make it actionable The hard part is over. You have a well-organized to-do list, which makes it easy to plan and prioritize. A to-do list is not only meant to decide today’s tasks but also to schedule what you need to do in the future. To act on your todo list, go through each group created in the step above and do this: Strike off everything in group 4. Beam with pride, for you just saved yourself a tremendous amount of time. Let's put all that saved time to good use. Delegate everything in group 3. Allocate a small amount of time for coordination and follow-ups. Just because you’re not doing it yourself does not mean this work will take you zero time. Order tasks in group 2 by importance and interest. Take the top 5 tasks with the highest score on the importance and interest scale and mark them for you to tackle first. If you have to eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first. This is another way of saying that if you have two important tasks before you, start with the biggest, hardest, and most important task first. — Brian Tracy, Eat That Frog Order tasks in group 1 by urgency and mark the top 2-5 tasks for you to work on today based on their complexity and effort required. A clear list of action items is good to get started, but it’s not enough to ensure you make the best use of your time and get things done. Which slots on your calendar are filled with activities that can be delegated to others? Spot them on your calendar and remove, reassign or reschedule to create space for activities from group 1 and group 2. If you’re not in the habit of using a calendar to schedule and plan your tasks, don’t worry. You can get started now. Scheduling tasks in advance makes it easy to get started, as you no longer have to decide what to do next or wait for the inspiration to strike. You can initiate the intended response by simply acting on your plan. Planning ahead and time-boxing your tasks by putting them on your calendar has some major advantages: You don’t have to decide at the last moment, which often leads to indecision and waste of time. You can plan and prioritize important work over easy or urgent tasks. Gives you a sense of control over your time. Keeps you calm and focused as it prevents you from panicking on not knowing what to do next. More brain cycles are available to focus on the task at hand. You’re less likely to waste all your time in meetings by blocking important work upfront. Gives you an opportunity to do work that you have been procrastinating and putting off for a long time. You can also use a calendar to block time for repetitive tasks, checking emails, responding to messages, etc. Once your mind tunes to using specific time blocks for these activities, you’re less likely to be distracted by them during your most productive hours. You must create a foundational schedule that adds structure and intentionality to your days and weeks. Hello everyone, my name is Vlad, and I have created my own IT startup with just $100. I have always wanted to test my abilities and prove to myself what I am capable of. I wanted to see if I could go from creating an idea, designing the UI/UX, and developing the frontend and backend, to launching the product and marketing it. To provide some context, let me briefly describe my background. At the age of 14, I became fascinated with web development because I had a Counter-Strike team, and we needed a website to register for tournaments. As I maintained the website, I also delved into the art of using Photoshop. I began monetizing the site and explored ways to promote it. Moving forward, I attended university where I extensively wrote code in languages such as C++, Python, and C#. I developed my own neural networks, programmed robots, and tackled algorithms and data structures. During that time, I and my friends co-founded an event startup that helped users stay updated on schedules, changes, and notable speakers. I was responsible for UI/UX design and frontend development. It was during that period that I studied my first design methodologies: Google Material Design Guidelines and Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines. For my thesis, I worked on a project that involved fitting furniture using augmented reality on Swift. Later on, my partners and I established a 40-person IT outsourcing company where I served as the CTO and kept pace with technology stacks across JS, TypeScript, React, Vue, PHP, Python, Node.js, and React Native. With all the experience I had accumulated, I was eager to apply it to creating my own product. Choosing an Idea The plan was to create a product that: Would be beneficial for business owners. Could distribute itself without requiring my time and effort. Would have a monthly subscription (as extensive research indicates that this model is the most viable). Could be developed without external investments, utilizing only my own resources. Two ideas were considered: Developing a mobile application for Android and iOS. However, I discarded this idea immediately as the mobile app market is highly saturated. To achieve success, one needs to offer a truly exceptional product that surpasses enterprise competitors or secure significant investments. Developing applications for SaaS marketplaces such as Ecwid and Shopify. These platforms enable users to create an online store with just a few clicks, without any programming knowledge. I chose to pursue the development of applications for marketplaces because I already had experience in this field, albeit as a frontend developer and architect. Previously, I had created a smart assistant that enhanced the functionality of stores on both the Ecwid and Shopify platforms. Creation of the Idea I began researching what was popular at that time among users and what generated traffic for owners of online stores. The answer was obvious: social media. The success of a brand depends on its popularity in social networks and various business metrics, such as GMV, CMR, CM, and CLV. I realized that small business owners spent a lot of time managing their social media accounts, while medium-sized business owners invested a considerable amount of money and effort in hiring SMM specialists. To conduct research, I explored the app stores of Ecwid and Shopify. I found that there were similar applications available in Shopify, and in order to surpass the competition, I would need to create something genuinely superior and invest substantial resources so that merchants would choose my solution. I decided against that idea because I didn’t want to dive into video content creation or use neural networks for generating textual content. My goal was to develop a basic functionality that could solve real business problems. So, I turned to the Ecwid app store and discovered that there were hardly any competitors in the social media category. This was a win — merchants were seeking assistance with their social media management, and this is where they were waiting for a solution. Designing There are numerous insightful books written about project planning and design that can aid in designing one’s own project. However, after many years of working in IT, I have developed my own design principles that are quite simple and allow for quick design of small and medium-scale projects. All you need is a pen and a notebook. Start by listing the Actors that will be present in the system. Describe the functionality for each actor in the form of a list. Based on the functionality, design the layouts (this can be done in a notebook). Let’s delve into the design process using the example of an Instagram Autopost application. Actors in My Project — shop owner Merchant — a potential buyer on Instagram User The Functionality of Each Actor Prototyping In light of the information provided, it’s clear that I will be developing an administrative panel for merchants integrated with Ecwid, along with a post-publication service. The application will comprise the following key components: : This serves as an informative landing page where users can view their connected Instagram accounts and a list of their marketing campaigns. Dashboard Page : The first page users encounter after installing the application. Here, we provide a brief explanation of how to connect their Instagram account and configure their settings. Connect Instagram Page : This page features a form that allows users to input textual descriptions, set posting frequency, specify whether promotional codes need to be generated, select product categories from which items will be extracted, and view a post preview. Create/Edit Campaign : A helpful widget designed to guide users through the application’s processes and functionalities, facilitating their understanding of its operation. Tutorials Widget Armed with a pen and paper, I’ve sketched out a preliminary layout for these pages. Having a visual representation at hand greatly aids in the development of the application. It simplifies the design of both the frontend and the backend components and informs the database structure. This approach has proven valuable to me on numerous occasions. Welcome Page This is the first page users encounter, and our aim is to provide a comprehensive step-by-step guide on what they need to do. The page features a concise information block, simple graphics, and a single button for the primary action: connecting their account to the application. Additionally, we’ve included an onboarding widget on this page. Its purpose is to explain the process in detail. Let’s break down the elements of this crucial introductory page: : At the top of the page, you’ll find an information block. This block provides users with a quick overview of what they can expect and the benefits of connecting their account to our application. Information Block : To enhance user understanding, we’ve incorporated straightforward graphics. These visuals offer a visual representation of the steps they’ll be taking. Visual Aids : Prominently placed beneath the information block there is the main action button. Its purpose is clear — users click here to begin the process of connecting their account to our application. Action Button : To make the onboarding process as smooth as possible, we’ve integrated an onboarding widget. This widget serves as a virtual guide, walking users through each step they need to follow. It simplifies the entire process and ensures that users feel confident about proceeding. Onboarding Widget Dashboard Page The Dashboard page serves as the central hub for merchants, providing them with a comprehensive overview of our application’s functionality while ensuring timely updates on any issues and offering valuable activity statistics. Let’s break down the key components of this page: : In the first block, users can easily check the status of their connected account. If an account’s token has expired or if there are access configuration problems, this section will display the real-time status along with a description of the issue. Account Status : This block displays a list of connected Facebook pages or Instagram accounts. For each page, it indicates whether the application has access and whether there are any posting issues. This information helps users manage their social media presence effectively. Connected Pages : An essential aspect of successful posting is aligning with the store’s time zone. Users can view their current time zone in this block and have the option to adjust it to the time zone preferred. For instance, a store owner in London may see 21:00 GMT+1, while in New York it’s 16:00 GMT-4. This feature ensures posts are scheduled at the optimal times for their audience. Time Zone Management : The Campaign block is a pivotal component, offering users insights into their ongoing campaigns. Users can quickly check which campaigns are active, their status, the destination page for posting, and initiate quick actions to start or stop campaigns. Additionally, users can access the campaign creation and editing forms directly from this section. Campaign Overview The Dashboard page is designed to empower merchants with a clear understanding of their application’s performance and control over their marketing campaigns. By presenting crucial information in an accessible format, it streamlines the user experience and facilitates efficient management of their online presence. Create/Edit Campaign The campaign creation and editing page with its abundance of forms and fields can appear daunting to those not well-versed in its intricacies. To streamline the user experience, we’ve organized the page into logical blocks, introduced helpful tooltips for each section, and included a post-preview feature. Let’s dive into the various elements of this page: : Recognizing the need for dynamic and engaging content to prevent user fatigue and potential unsubscribes, we’ve implemented a solution that randomly selects templates from pre-defined text options. 1) Variations for Textual Descriptions The “Add Template” button allows users to add text variations, each represented by a number for easy selection. In the text editor, users can insert constants like {{PRODUCT_LINK}} to automate links to products. A quick-access “Insert Constant” button provides easy access to essential variables, such as product name, product link, product description, and price. : To enhance user comprehension of how their changes affect the appearance of the post, we’ve introduced a “Preview” block that replicates the design of Facebook and Instagram posts. 2) Preview Block Changes made to the active template in Block 1 automatically update the text in the preview. For instance, if a user includes {{PRODUCT_LINK}} in their message, they’ll see the final link in the preview. The post displays the product image, and if the user has enabled discount generation, the promotion code will be superimposed on the image. Switching the posting account in Block #5 will also update the account name in the preview. : This block allows users to personalize campaigns and add distinctive features. For example, users can assign unique names to their campaigns and select categories for posting. 3) Campaign Details : Users can specify the day of the week and time for post-publication in this section. 4) Scheduling Block : In this block, users can choose the account where the post will be published. 5) Account Selection : Users have the option to activate or deactivate campaigns. This feature is especially useful when users want to schedule campaigns in advance or pause ongoing ones. 6) Campaign Activation Checkbox : We provide a modal window with all site categories that will participate in the campaign. These categories are the source of randomly selected products for posting. 7) Modal Window with Categories : Unfortunately, this block is not reflected in the mockups but was added later. Here, users can configure discount and promotion code generation, which can be inserted into the text and overlaid on the product image. 8) Promotion Codes Block By structuring the campaign creation and editing page in this manner, we aim to simplify the process for users, providing clarity and control over their marketing efforts. With logical organization, helpful tooltips, and a real-time preview, we empower users to craft engaging campaigns effortlessly. Design Design development can be divided into 2 parts: Design of the merchant’s administrative panel App card design, advertising promotions, and app icon Admin Panel I did not develop the design of the administrative part, as I will be satisfied with the prototype that we developed earlier. Ecwid API has its own CSS framework, and all I need to do is create a grid and insert ready-made components into it. In addition to simple components, the Ecwid API also has complex components, similar to the following: If you are developing your own product that does not have its own CSS framework, you can use the open-source framework. This framework is known by many and has a large base of components and its own grid. Bootstrap Brand Identity Development Okay, let’s move on to the second part, which is the development of our own style. Yes, I have decided to develop it myself without outsourcing the services of a designer. I could have hired a designer, but I wanted to leave a part of myself in this, as it will be the first point of contact for my users with this application. The first thing the platform for hosting the application requires is a logo. I had an idea of placing the Instagram logo in the center, around which likes, people, and money revolve in their own orbits. The concept of the application is that Instagram is a whole world for businessmen, where millions of people want to learn about your product and use it as soon as possible. This is how the logo came about. It was very helpful for me to have Ecwid’s system of rules and guidelines for creating my logo. I believe that rules and specific frameworks simplify the task by reducing the possible variations of element placement and color usage. App Page In any app marketplace, the top priority is screenshots showcasing the functionality of the application. However, having just functionality is no longer enough. CARNEY, Circuit Judge: Microsoft Corporation appeals from orders of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York denying its motion to quash a warrant (“Warrant”) issued under § 2703 of the Stored Communications Act (“SCA” or the “Act”), 18 U.S.C. §§ 2701 et seq., and holding Microsoft in contempt of court for refusing to execute the Warrant on the government’s behalf.  The Warrant directed Microsoft to seize and produce the contents of an e‐mail account that it maintains for a customer who uses the company’s electronic communications services.  A United States magistrate judge (Francis, M.J.) issued the Warrant on the government’s application, having found probable cause to believe that the account was being used in furtherance of narcotics trafficking.  The Warrant was then served on Microsoft at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft produced its customer’s non‐content information to the government, as directed.  That data was stored in the United States.  But Microsoft ascertained that, to comply fully with the Warrant, it would need to access customer content that it stores and maintains in Ireland and to import that data into the United States for delivery to federal authorities.  It declined to do so.  Instead, it moved to quash the Warrant.  The magistrate judge, affirmed by the District Court (Preska, C.J.), denied the motion to quash and, in due course, the District Court held Microsoft in civil contempt for its failure. Microsoft and the government dispute the nature and reach of the Warrant that the Act authorized and the extent of Microsoft’s obligations under the instrument.  For its part, Microsoft emphasizes Congress’s use in the Act of the term “warrant” to identify the authorized instrument.  Warrants traditionally carry territorial limitations:   United States law enforcement officers may be directed by a court‐issued warrant to seize items at locations in the United States and in United States‐controlled areas, see Fed. R. Crim. P. 41(b), but their authority generally does not extend further. The government, on the other hand, characterizes the dispute as merely about “compelled disclosure,” regardless of the label appearing on the instrument.  It maintains that “similar to a subpoena, [an SCA warrant] requir[es] the recipient to deliver records, physical objects, and other materials to the government” no matter where those documents are located, so long as they are subject to the recipient’s custody or control.  Gov’t Br. at 6.  It relies on a collection of court rulings construing properly‐ served subpoenas as imposing that broad obligation to produce without regard to a document’s location.  E.g., Marc Rich & Co., A.G. v. United States, 707 F.2d 663 (2d Cir. 1983). For the reasons that follow, we think that Microsoft has the better of the argument.  When, in 1986, Congress passed the Stored Communications Act as part of the broader Electronic Communications Privacy Act, its aim was to protect user privacy in the context of new technology that required a user’s interaction with a service provider.  Neither explicitly nor implicitly does the statute envision the application of its warrant provisions overseas.  Three decades ago, international boundaries were not so routinely crossed as they are today, when service providers rely on worldwide networks of hardware to satisfy users’ 21st–century demands for access and speed and their related, evolving expectations of privacy. Rather, in keeping with the pressing needs of the day, Congress focused on providing basic safeguards for the privacy of domestic users.  Accordingly, we think it employed the term “warrant” in the Act to require pre‐disclosure scrutiny of the requested search and seizure by a neutral third party, and thereby to afford heightened privacy protection in the United States.  It did not abandon the instrument’s territorial limitations and other constitutional requirements.  The application of the Act that the government proposes ― interpreting “warrant” to require a service provider to retrieve material from beyond the borders of the United States ―would require us to disregard the presumption against extraterritoriality that the Supreme Court re‐stated and emphasized in Morrison v. National Australian Bank Ltd., 561 U.S. 247 (2010) and, just recently, in RJR Nabisco, Inc. v. European Cmty., 579 U.S. __, 2016 WL 3369423 (June 20, 2016).  We are not at liberty to do so. Long gone is the time when everybody wanted a website; today, everybody wants a mobile app. We receive lots of emails from potential clients asking us to convert their websites to iPhone or Android mobile apps. If you’re thinking about jumping on the mobile path, let’s look at turning a website into a mobile app from three perspectives: business, user, and platform. Business - What Do You Need an App For? There are a lot of examples of businesses that started as a website and got into mobile a bit later: Dropbox, Airbnb, Google Docs, the Guardian -- the list goes on and on. Why do you think they made this decision? ...Hmm... because mobile devices are rapidly overpopulating the planet! We’ve been hearing this for years, ever since they started shipping Ericsson phones with Symbian OS. But the real reason is not “devices.” The real reason is users. Website, email, SMS, mobile app, kiosk, customer service, phone calls. All these things are simply channels that companies use to interact with customers. Customers don’t think of these as “channels.” But they do care about their experience with a company. If their experience is bad or is not seamless across platforms, then the customer is likely to go elsewhere. Developing a cross-channel user experience is the reason why brick-and-mortar companies get first into the web, and then into mobile and tablet apps. It’s up to you to decide how exactly you want the cross-channel user experience to be implemented across platforms. You may encapsulate all your website features in a mobile app, or let an app perform a limited number of functions. Sometimes, mobile apps may even provide functionality that a website doesn’t. It doesn’t really matter whether an app is a direct translation of a website or not. What matters is creating a seamless user experience. Every platform or channel has different rules that need to be followed – whether you develop a product from scratch or turn an existing website into an iPhone app. Platform-specific knowledge combined with development experience and business expertise are the three ingredients needed to craft a seamless user experience. Even if you already have a responsive website (WordPress, Joomla, custom-made, hard-coded HTML 5, etc.), we suggest that you forget about it; a native mobile app is an entirely different product. The cost of turning a website into a native app can be rather high given the variety of features that websites typically provide. More to the point, wrapping an entire website into an app is risky because you can’t predict whether users will actually like your finished product. We prefer starting with an app that does a few things well, and then gradually adding more features. The idea of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is to quickly develop a functional prototype that includes a minimum number of features – the core functionality - and then launch it on the market and evaluate the concept. It lets clients save time and money, and, most importantly, lets clients elaborate on further developments based on what they learn from users. It defines the most essential features to be included in an MVP within the first week of work. This is called the project planning stage. This pre-production stage is about getting an understanding of the product, its users, and its key functionality, as well as understanding the technologies needed for its development. User – How to Achieve Seamless UX Native apps have a very distinct look and feel. Therefore, the UX of a mobile app should be completely different from a website’s UX. Keep it simple and intuitive, don’t ignore the platform, provide context, make a good first impression, and pay attention to the brand values. These are some of the fundamental UX design principles that we focus on while ensuring a consistent and beautiful visual language across the product. From our experience, the biggest challenge for website owners is to switch to a mobile way of thinking. Therefore, I have decided to highlight some of the most common user expectations that distinguish mobile from the web: Consistency across screen sizes It’s obviously hard to accommodate the whole website on a small screen. Roughly speaking, 4-5 features on a website will equal 5-10 screens on a mobile device. This is another reason why I suggest picking out only the key features and dumping the rest, at least in an app’s early versions. Simple navigation Interactions on a website are usually complicated. “Complicated” is absolutely not what you want in a mobile app. When we convert a website into an app, we let the mobile-first philosophy lead the process. In other words, I designed each page with a clear orientation and simple navigation so that a user doesn’t feel lost. There is nothing users hate more than wasting their time trying to reach a destination. Instant gratification With mobile, users expected immediate gratification. In a mobile app, users get in, accomplish something, and get out. If they press a button, they get a reward, so to speak. Instant gratification is the only way to keep users engaged and an app running. Users become less motivated to use an app as its complication increases. The longer it takes a page to load, the more clicks there are between screens, and the more fields a user needs to fill out, the less motivated a user will become. For example, the web version of one of our current projects has a pretty sophisticated car search with lots of filters. If we didn’t simplify it for mobile, the user would’ve had to spend a lifetime trying to make use of all of the filters. Instead, we chose only the three most significant – brand, style, and price – thus achieving the slickest possible user experience. Platform – How to Turn a Website Into an App Since web and native mobile platforms have very few things in common, the question you should be asking isn’t “How can I convert web to mobile?” but rather “How can I develop a mobile app with the best user experience?” As opposed to websites or mobile web, native apps have a lot of advantages that you can use to take your business to the next level. One of the biggest advantages of mobile apps is the ability to connect to a device’s services and hardware components. We can access address books, pictures, cameras, and microphones. We can also use a device’s compass, accelerometers, gyroscope, and GPS to define location, positioning, motion, and orientation. A mobile device, unlike the web, is a part of a user’s lifestyle and is designed for frequent use. That’s why data caching and offline capabilities are particularly important. While data caching is a must for any app, accessing an app’s content in offline mode cannot always be possible because it implies storing resources locally and utilizing the computing power and memory of the device. If you already have a server, we can pull the data from your website into an app, but only if the server is optimized for mobile. Sometimes, a backend even needs to be developed from scratch (if it’s outdated). A mobile app usually works against a server layer through JSON APIs, while websites typically use HTML format. Certain functionality - like payments, for example - requires using a third-party service that processes transactions through a server. On the web, payment functionality is implemented differently. Mobile platforms also offer possibilities for user engagement that websites often do not. These include push notifications, gamification features, and location-based actions, all developed natively. Mobile is also a great avenue for innovation given the speed at which technology is developing. From iBeacons to Apple Pay to Bitcoin and augmented reality, the possibilities of mobile platforms are endless. However, the sooner you come to the app community, the better it is for your business and customer to bring you more leads, or else someone else will acquire your customer.

He could not really care for me, I thought, for if he did the storm would rather have made him come even if I had not expected him, than, as it did, prevent a promised visit. He would well know that this drear sky and gloomy rain would load my spirit almost to madness: if the weather had been fine I should not have regretted his absence as heavily as I necessarily must shut up in this miserable cottage with no companions but my own wretched thoughts. If he were truly my friend he would have calculated all this; and let me now calculate this boasted friendship, and discover its real worth. He got over his grief for Elinor, and the country became dull to him, so he was glad to find even me for amusement; and when he does not know what else to do he passes his lazy hours here, and calls this friendship—It is true that his presence is a consolation to me, and that his words are sweet, and, when he will he can pour forth thoughts that win me from despair. His words are sweet,—and so, truly, is the honey of the bee, but the bee has a sting, and unkindness is a worse smart that that received from an insect’s venom. I will put him to the proof. He says all hope is dead to him, and I know that it is dead to me, so we are both equally fitted for death. Let me try if he will die with me; and as I fear to die alone, if he will accompany me to cheer me, and thus he can shew himself my friend in the only manner my misery will permit. It was madness I believe, but I so worked myself up to this idea that I could think of nothing else. If he dies with me it is well, and there will be an end of two miserable beings; and if he will not, then will I scoff at his friendship and drink the poison before him to shame his cowardice. I planned the whole scene with an earnest heart and franticly set my soul on this project. I procured Laudanum and placing it in two glasses on the table, filled my room with flowers and decorated the last scene of my tragedy with the nicest care. As the hour for his coming approached my heart softened and I wept; not that I gave up my plan, but even when resolved the mind must undergo several revolutions of feeling before it can drink its death. Now all was ready and Woodville came. I received him at the door of my cottage and leading him solemnly into the room, I said: “My friend, I wish to die. I am quite weary of enduring the misery which hourly I do endure, and I will throw it off. What slave will not, if he may, escape from his chains? Look, I weep: for more than two years I have never enjoyed one moment free from anguish. I have often desired to die; but I am a very coward. It is hard for one so young who was once so happy as I was; voluntarily to divest themselves of all sensation and to go alone to the dreary grave; I dare not. I must die, yet my fear chills me; I pause and shudder and then for months I endure my excess of wretchedness. But now the time is come when I may quit life, I have a friend who will not refuse to accompany me in this dark journey; such is my request: earnestly do I entreat and implore you to die with me. Then we shall find Elinor and what I have lost. Look, I am prepared; there is the death draught, let us drink it together and willingly & joyfully quit this hated round of daily life. sic “You turn from me; yet before you deny me reflect, Woodville, how sweet it were to cast off the load of tears and misery under which we now labour: and surely we shall find light after we have passed the dark valley. That drink will plunge us in a sweet slumber, and when we awaken what joy will be ours to find all our sorrows and fears past. ; aye, a very little patience; for, look, there is the key of our prison; we hold it in our own hands, and are we more debased than slaves to cast it away and give ourselves up to voluntary bondage? Even now if we had courage we might be free. Behold, my cheek is flushed with pleasure at the imagination of death; all that we love are dead. Come, give me your hand, one look of joyous sympathy and we will go together and seek them; a lulling journey; where our arrival will bring bliss and our waking be that of angels. Do you delay? Are you a coward, Woodville? Oh fie! Cast off this blank look of human melancholy. Oh! that I had words to express the luxury of death that I might win you. I tell you we are no longer miserable mortals; we are about to become Gods; spirits free and happy as gods. What fool on a bleak shore, seeing a flowery isle on the other side with his lost love beckoning to him from it would pause because the wave is dark and turbid? A little patience, and all will be over “What if some little payne the passage haveThat makes frayle flesh to fear the bitter wave?Is not short payne well borne that brings long ease,And lays the soul to sleep in quiet grave? “Do you mark my words; I have learned the language of despair: I have it all by heart, for I am Despair; and a strange being am I, joyous, triumphant Despair. But those words are false, for the wave may be dark but it is not bitter. We lie down, and close our eyes with a gentle good night, and when we wake, we are free. Come then, no more delay, thou tardy one! Behold the pleasant potion! Look, I am a spirit of good, and not a human maid that invites thee, and with winning accents, (oh, that they would win thee!) says, Come and drink.” As I spoke I fixed my eyes upon his countenance, and his exquisite beauty, the heavenly compassion that beamed from his eyes, his gentle yet earnest look of deprecation and wonder even before he spoke wrought a change in my high strained feelings taking from me all the sterness of despair and filling me only with the softest grief. I saw his eyes humid also as he took both my hands in his; and sitting down near me, he said: “This is a sad deed to which you would lead me, dearest friend, and your woe must indeed be deep that could fill you with these unhappy thoughts. You long for death and yet you fear it and wish me to be your companion. But I have less courage than you and even thus accompanied I dare not die. Listen to me, and then reflect if you ought to win me to your project, even if with the over-bearing eloquence of despair you could make black death so inviting that the fair heaven should appear darkness. Listen I entreat you to the words of one who has himself nurtured desperate thoughts, and longed with impatient desire for death, but who has at length trampled the phantom under foot, and crushed his sting. Come, as you have played Despair with me I will play the part of Una with you and bring you hurtless from his dark cavern. Listen to me, and let yourself be softened by words in which no selfish passion lingers. “We know not what all this wide world means; its strange mixture of good and evil. But we have been placed here and bid live and hope. I know not what we are to hope; but there is some good beyond us that we must seek; and that is our earthly task. If misfortune come against us we must fight with her; we must cast her aside, and still go on to find out that which it is our nature to desire. Whether this prospect of future good be the preparation for another existence I know not; or whether that it is merely that we, as workmen in God’s vineyard, must lend a hand to smooth the way for our posterity. If it indeed be that; if the efforts of the virtuous now, are to make the future inhabitants of this fair world more happy; if the labours of those who cast aside selfishness, and try to know the truth of things, are to free the men of ages, now far distant but which will one day come, from the burthen under which those who now live groan, and like you weep bitterly; if they free them but from one of what are now the necessary evils of life, truly I will not fail but will with my whole soul aid the work. From my youth I have said, I will be virtuous; I will dedicate my life for the good of others; I will do my best to extirpate evil and if the spirit who protects ill should so influence circumstances that I should suffer through my endeavour, yet while there is hope and hope there ever must be, of success, cheerfully do I gird myself to my task. “I have powers; my countrymen think well of them. Do you think I sow my seed in the barren air, & have no end in what I do? Believe me, I will never desert life untill this last hope is torn from my bosom, that in some way my labours may form a link in the chain of gold with which we ought all to strive to drag Happiness from where she sits enthroned above the clouds, now far beyond our reach, to inhabit the earth with us. Let us suppose that Socrates, or Shakespear, or Rousseau had been seized with despair and died in youth when they were as young as I am; do you think that we and all the world should not have lost incalculable improvement in our good feelings and our happiness thro’ their destruction. I am not like one of these; they influenced millions: but if I can influence but a hundred, but ten, but one solitary individual, so as in any way to lead him from ill to good, that will be a joy to repay me for all my sufferings, though they were a million times multiplied; and that hope will support me to bear them. “And those who do not work for posterity; or working, as may be my case, will not be known by it; yet they, believe me, have also their duties. You grieve because you are unhappy; it is happiness you seek but you despair of obtaining it. But if you can bestow happiness on another; if you can give one other person only one hour of joy ought you not to live to do it? And every one has it in their power to do that. The inhabitants of this world suffer so much pain. In crowded cities, among cultivated plains, or on the desart mountains, pain is thickly sown, and if we can tear up but one of these noxious weeds, or more, if in its stead we can sow one seed of corn, or plant one fair flower, let that be motive sufficient against suicide. Let us not desert our task while there is the slightest hope that we may in a future day do this. “Indeed I dare not die. I have a mother whose support and hope I am. I have a friend who loves me as his life, and in whose breast I should infix a mortal sting if I ungratefully left him. So I will not die. Nor shall you, my friend; cheer up; cease to weep, I entreat you. Are you not young, and fair, and good? Why should you despair? Or if you must for yourself, why for others? If you can never be happy, can you never bestow happiness? Oh! believe me, if you beheld on lips pale with grief one smile of joy and gratitude, and knew that you were parent of that smile, and that without you it had never been, you would feel so pure and warm a happiness that you would wish to live for ever again and again to enjoy the same pleasure. “Come, I see that you have already cast aside the sad thoughts you before franticly indulged. Look in that mirror; when I came your brow was contracted, your eyes deep sunk in your head, your lips quivering; your hands trembled violently when I took them; but now all is tranquil and soft. You are grieved and there is grief in the expression of your countenance but it is gentle and sweet. You allow me to throw away this cursed drink; you smile; oh, Congratulate me, hope is triumphant, and I have done some good.” These words are shadowy as I repeat them but they were indeed words of fire and produced a warm hope in me (I, miserable wretch, to hope!) that tingled like pleasure in my veins. He did not leave me for many hours; not until he had improved the spark that he had kindled, and with an angelic hand fostered the return of somthing that seemed like joy. He left me but I still was calm, and after I had saluted the starry sky and dewy earth with eyes of love and a contented good night, I slept sweetly, visited by dreams, the first of pleasure I had had for many long months. But this was only a momentary relief and my old habits of feeling returned; for I was doomed while in life to grieve, and to the natural sorrow of my father’s death and its most terrific cause, immagination added a tenfold weight of woe. I believed myself to be polluted by the unnatural love I had inspired, and that I was a creature cursed and set apart by nature. I thought that like another Cain, I had a mark set on my forehead to shew mankind that there was a barrier between me and they . Woodville had told me that there was in my countenance an expression as if I belonged to another world; so he had seen that sign: and there it lay a gloomy mark to tell the world that there was that within my soul that no silence could render sufficiently obscure. Why when fate drove me to become this outcast from human feeling; this monster with whom none might mingle in converse and love; why had she not from that fatal and most accursed moment, shrouded me in thick mists and placed real darkness between me and my fellows so that I might never more be seen?, [ ] and as I passed, like a murky cloud loaded with blight, they might only perceive me by the cold chill I should cast upon them; telling them, how truly, that something unholy was near? Then I should have lived upon this dreary heath unvisited, and blasting none by my unhallowed gaze. Alas! I verily believe that if the near prospect of death did not dull and soften my bitter feelings, if for a few months longer I had continued to live as I then lived, strong in body, but my soul corrupted to its core by a deadly cancer, if day after day I had dwelt on these dreadful sentiments I should have become mad, and should have fancied myself a living pestilence: so horrible to my own solitary thoughts did this form, this voice, and all this wretched self appear; for had it not been the source of guilt that wants a name? sic sic This was superstition. I did not feel thus franticly when first I knew that the holy name of father was become a curse to me: but my lonely life inspired me with wild thoughts; and then when I saw Woodville & day after day he tried to win my confidence and I never dared give words to my dark tale, I was impressed more strongly with the withering fear that I was in truth a marked creature, a pariah, only fit for death.
