, our upcoming game, is set to introduce a new map, the Festival Map. Nearly Friendly Tribes This map is the second in our series, following the first map, , which had a lot of hiding spots. the Parking Lot Although we were happy with the parking lot map, we already intended to provide players with more options and variety, so we began creating the Festival Map. The Festival Map was inspired by music festivals from around the world. We aimed to create a map that captured the essence of these festivals, where people worldwide gather to celebrate and enjoy music. We focused on creating a vibrant and exciting environment for players that reflected the cultural diversity of the tribes in our game. Each team spawns on opposite sides of the map, with one near the stage and the other near a wooden hut on the opposite side of the map. The map is set at night, and numerous lights illuminate it. The map's pinnacle is the massive stage on one side, similar to those seen at most music festivals but versatile enough to serve as a stage for every music genre for the current and future game characters. The stage offers the player a significant advantage and a clear shot at the enemy spawn, but it is also a high-risk, high-reward location since players are most expected there. The open area in the middle of the map is where we anticipate the most action. Although it is an open area, there are a few objects like rocks, but not enough to be a good hiding place. This design choice discourages camping and helps the game be more fast-paced. On each side of the open space, there are also small wooden huts with small medic kits that provide a little HP restoration. To enhance the overall map experience, we drew inspiration from real-world music festivals, as previously mentioned, to create the ambiance of a live music event outside of big cities. The surrounding mountains, trees, and bushes provide a natural and scenic backdrop to the gameplay, compensating for the lack of hiding places in the map's center. The Festival Map offers players a unique and exciting gameplay experience that reflects the game world's cultural diversity and vibrancy. Wrapping Up Finally, the Festival Map is a one-of-a-kind addition to Nearly Friendly Tribes that promises an exciting and challenging gaming experience. The map captures the essence of the game's main theme with its emphasis on cultural diversity and live music events. Depending on the topic, an article can take from two hours to 20-30 hours of researching, writing, editing, and formatting. I do this work across weeks as I have multiple drafts opened at any moment (for example, now I have around 35 current drafts). These drafts grow organically. Whenever I come around to an interesting concept, I either note it in a specific draft or open a new one. I read most of the articles from and to absorb good habits about writing. What suits me best is to do a little bit of work every day. I have drafts with tens of pages (anything from 30 to 50 pages) of unedited content, with a melange of Romanian and English, as I added my ideas and research notes from previous weeks. Every time, with no exception, when I open these heavy drafts, I sigh and tell myself: why do I even bother? What original thoughts can come out of this? In time, I learned to see these distorting questions as my cue to simply start working and as a challenge to condense the complex knowledge from those drafts into eight or ten minutes worth of reading. Meet the Writer Roxana Murariu: "We Craft our Identities Based on our Tribes"

I make no pretence that I am a generalist and get bored quickly. I have written before about how this sometimes makes you feel left out, or worse, an idiot who has wasted their life. I want to explore this topic in more detail, and that of ‘tech tribes’, that I feel it relates to. Outsiders no more I think it’s accurate to say that many of us working in tech, at least those of us who have been for some time, grew up as outsiders to the mainstream. For many years our choice of interest and work was generally regarded as the domain of awkward ‘nerds’, when ‘nerd’ was a term of vitriol. In the past few years us ‘awkward nerds’ have been increasingly joined by those who would have been put off by this image. In an ultimate twist of irony, likely some of those who used to make our lives hell when we were younger. This is because the tech sector is booming, technology is king, it’s largely profitable, pays well and never stops demanding talent. In short, (for the time being) we won. And the previous winners want in on the game of those they called ‘losers’ before. A lot of these points could do with further explanation, dissection and analysis, but that’s not the place of this post and maybe not me. What I want to focus on is how this has affected us. Tech Tribes We may choose to deny it, but breaking into tribes, gangs, teams, clubs or groups (along whatever divisions) is human nature. As intelligent people we think we don’t do it, but we do, and we try to make excuses and intellectual arguments for what is basically joining a gang. It’s a defense mechanism, we felt isolated and different as youth, so forming into strongly identifying groups gives a strength in numbers that is comforting. Peruse a forum or reddit thread or sit in a room of tech enthusiasts and you will see it. My Linux distribution is better than yours, because… My text editor is better than yours, because… Your choice of programming language is dumb, because… And these are tame examples, at the extreme end these attitudes have manifested into controversies like gamergate and the general denigration of minorities in the tech world. We like to pretend that these arguments are justified and backed by reasoned, informed experience or knowledge. Sometimes they may be, but most of the time it’s plain and simple posturing. A modern equivalent of squaring up your chest to a rival. This is all fine in principle, as I say, it’s human nature. If you care so much about something to get involved in such a heated discussion, then good on you, most of the time. When it’s not OK is how you treat people who don’t share this opinion. There are those who will have an equally strong opinion that is contrary or different and will either never associate ‘with the likes of you’ or will enjoy the challenge of trying to change your opinion. But it does not excuse treating someone badly because they don’t share an opinion with you. More subtle than this is the way people who don’t care, or are more pragmatic are treated. At the more ‘geeky’ conferences (such as FOSDEM) you see this all the time, groups swarming off to their tribe of choice to seek a bit of self-congratulatory confidence boosting. When you’re asked which tribe you identify with and you don’t identify with any because you have a more broad range of interests, it can be isolating and lonely. When everyone vanishes off to their ‘project x’ dinner or drinks that you knew nothing about, but might have had something to contribute to, it feels a lot like those cold dark playgrounds of your youth all over again. Having a general interest in lots of things amongst some more extreme tech people is often seen as a bad thing. Surely you must have an opinion, you can’t have a balanced view of everything, come down on the side of something! Maybe I am indecisive, in fact I am. Maybe I fear committing myself to any one thing and use it as an excuse to flit from project to project. But there are a lot of people like me, especially beginners who haven’t formed an opinion yet. Alienating them from day one is not a sustainable approach to project growth. To these same groups it can also come across as snobbery or over confident and as success grows in the tech world, these attitudes are increasing. Not only do we think we are right, we feel we have increasing evidence to prove it. Lonely Chinchilla Cultural Differences I am trying hard to not make this post sound like a rant because I sometimes feel left out. In every situation when I have experienced these attitudes or been ignored, I try to step back, take a balanced and objective look at things and keep being friendly. But you know what, generally being the one who approaches people, instigates conversations and tries to engage with others gets exhausting. I have noticed some cultural differences between European events and events in the USA and Australia. Especially at events in the USA, where I was rarely left alone in a room of strangers for longer than 5 minutes before someone would approach me and introduce me into their circle. At European events I can stand in a room alone for an hour and few will make a move to greet you. It’s hard to say whether relationships made at European events may end up being more meaningful over US events. That’s a difficult theory to test. On the flip side, I find that US attendees at events are far more geared towards personalities, expecting you to have heard of someone they mention. Maybe this is just a different method of forming ‘gangs’ amongst groups. So What? I’m not sure what my conclusion or outcome to this post is. Despite being offended by many attendees at events, I am trying to remain open minded and positive on this issue. I guess all I am asking/saying is that when someone approaches you who doesn’t have an opinion you share, be courteous. They are trying to understand why you have formed your opinion and why you are passionate about something. Help them understand it, but don’t cast judgement on why they haven’t formed the same opinion (yet). When you see someone struggling to fit in, remember those times in your life when you were rejected or ignored and how you felt. It wasn’t great was it? And finally, remember that treating someone nicely might help them agree with (or at least see) your opinion and welcome a new contributor into your community. Nigeria! Giant of Africa, as she is fondly called. It is the most populous black country in the world, with over 200 million people, a teeming youth population, and . That's about 100 million, mostly tech-savvy young people all over the internet struggling to wrest some money from the famed riches of cyberspace. It's no wonder the country is well known for internet fraud, with a world-famous fraudster from Nigeria named Hushpuppi recently jailed by the US government for swindling numerous Americans off millions of hard-earned dollars. While internet fraud has cast a bad light on Nigerians online, this single story must not be allowed to take root, however, because Nigerians have also found ingenious ways to use the internet constructively with world-reaching effects. over 50% aged from 15 to 60 years For example, are well recognized in the content creation industry with many well-know ones like Mark Angel, Emmanuela, Sabinus etc. having millions of followers from around the world whom they routinely entertain. Nigerian music has also dominated the global space in recent years, with the internet playing a critical role in this rise. Nigerian music has dominated Africa since the 2010s, but recently, Nigerian artists like Burna Boy, Rhema, and Ckay have released colossal global hit songs like Last Last, Calm down, and Love Nwantiti, respectively, reaching hundreds of millions and even billions of streams. This was only made possible through online streaming and video platforms like Spotify, YouTube, and TikTok. Nigerian comedians A relatively recent technology known as cryptocurrency has hit the internet, and Nigerians have not been left behind. The country was in crypto adoption around the world. This, of course, can be traced back to the country's relatively backward financial system, with Nigeria recording numerous economic crises over the years. happened just before the 2023 elections in the country, where the Nigerian Naira was not even available for people to withdraw. Basically, there was little cash in circulation, and protests erupted in Banks, with people demanding to withdraw the money they had deposited so they could handle day-to-day expenses. This cash shortage lasted for several weeks, and millions of Nigerians began adopting alternative financial systems for Nigerian banks. Through this crisis, a little-known Crypto trader in the country known as would rise to fame and fortune by introducing an app for financial transactions that completely circumvented the Nigerian banking system. Blord would also go on to introduce a crypto exchange company called Blord Group in the country to convert cryptocurrency to Naira. Many Nigerians adopted Cryptocurrency during this financial crisis. recently ranked second A particularly crazy financial crisis Blord What you should know about Nigeria is that even though it is a very gifted country with lots of natural and human resources, it is run by a very corrupt government with notable ethnic biases. This has created widespread poverty in the country, with most of the gigantic 200 million people in the country left to fend for themselves anyhow they can. But the youths have taken up Agency as autonomous individuals battling against classist and ethnic divides, plus a corrupt, powerful government with dictatorial tendencies to create comfortable lives for themselves as sovereign entities who would not meekly surrender to a British-imposed country that seems determined to keep them down. This Nigerian dream has united beautifully with the vision of cryptocurrency, which basically serves as a democratized financial system that will create a level playing field for anyone around the world to make money. This article dives deeper into the possible role of autonomy, Crypto, and DAOs in getting Nigerians out of poverty. Tribalism and Classism in the Nigerian Government Nigeria is a multi-ethnic country with about 250 different ethnic groups. However, there are three main ethnic groups by population: the Hausa-Fulani in the Northwest, the Yoruba in the South West, and the Igbo in the South East. These three ethnic groups have dominated the government of the country since it gained independence from the British in 1960. However, was fought in 1967, with the Igbo of the Eastern region trying to break away from the country due to an ethnic crisis. The Igbo lost the war and have never produced a president to date, with the Mostly Muslim Hausa Fulani dominating the government at that time. Hence, there's a lot of ethnic discrimination in Nigerian politics with the Igbo, who number up to 40 million, and other Christian groups, with tens of millions of people mostly kept away from the presidency of what is supposed to be a democratic country. This discrimination in government has far-reaching economic impacts as the government of the day often favors their region in resource distribution. So, Nigerian Christians are often at a political disadvantage. a bloody civil war Classism is another major factor in Nigerian politics, with the mega-rich corrupting the voting system with their money and routinely rigging elections to maintain their hold on power and maltreat the poor (who are the majority) however they see fit. Hence, poor people in Nigeria who bear the brunt of the suffering hardly have a way to fix the country since their votes may not even count. This has led to a lot of crime around the country, with fraudsters, kidnappers, cultists, and sex workers being rampant. Nigerian Government Versus Autonomy The , through a federal system like the American government with executive, legislative, and Judiciary, does not practice true federalism. Simply put, the executive, who is led by the president, is too powerful, and through widespread corruption, they can control the lawmakers and judiciary, who are supposed to checkmate their excesses. This is also true for the state and local governments, who are often arm-twisted into doing the will of the federal government because the federal government has overall control of resources in the country. Hence, the Nigerian government is often anti-autonomy! Nigerian government Many groups have risen in the country to demand more autonomy and resource control at the regional level, but the federal government usually puts them down by force. This is mostly against the will of the people who always find ways to fight against the tyrannical control of the federal government. Basically, Nigerians want more autonomy to utilize their resources for a better life, as the federal government doesn't seem capable of delivering basic amenities like good roads, running water, and electricity. This has remained a constant cause of conflict in the country, with many lives lost. Nigerian Government Versus Wealthy Citizens As with any tyrannical system, the government in Nigeria seems determined to keep the people poor; hence, they are unable to fight for their rights. This is more rampant in the North, where despite hundreds of millions of Naira being allocated to education yearly. [Nigerian minimum wage](https://nigerian minimum wage), as at the time of this writing, is a meager 30,000 Naira (about $22) for a full month. That's way below the minimum wage in most countries and has made Nigeria a poor country for about a hundred years of its existence now. This is, of course, a deliberate act of corrupt politicians who prefer to cart away huge sums of money from budget allocations while leaving the people to fight for scraps. Hence, the people are kept poor and uneducated, so they can't really do much against these wealthy leaders who keep impoverishing them. A wealthy, educated population will, of course, be quite difficult to swindle as you please. millions of children are out of school Nigerian Government Versus the Internet During the Coronavirus crisis, Nigerians were locked up at home like others around the world, and palliatives released by international groups to ease the suffering of Nigerians were hoarded in several warehouses instead of being distributed to the people. Also, police personnel in the SARS unit went on a rampage, harassing tech-savvy Nigerian youths who were making money from the internet as fraudsters without much investigation. Nigerian youths responded by protesting on Twitter using hashtags and proceeded to coordinate themselves and break the curfew into a real Nationwide Street protest that came to be known as the #endsars protest. Millions of Nigerian youths took to the streets around the country and gained global coverage. Also, secessionist groups like , who were clamoring to break away from Nigeria, used online platforms like Facebook and Twitter to gather and communicate with millions of followers. The Nigerian government then effectively responded by banning Twitter in the country but soon canceled the ban after it failed, as citizens were using VPN apps to circumvent the ban. Hence, the Nigerian government has tyrannically tried to suppress the internet in Nigeria without regard for the millions of people who have found employment online. IPOB Nigerian Government Versus Crypto Expectedly, the Nigerian government has not reacted very well to Cryptocurrency technology in the country, though the people have welcomed the decentralized finance system with open arms. in the country as the government tries very hard to clamp down on global crypto agencies like Binance. Even the earlier mentioned millionaire crypto trader in the country (Blord) was arrested and charged with internet fraud even though he was able to come out victorious. The government predictably hates Crypto as they can't really control it. They complain that terrorists and fraudsters use Crypto for financial transactions though they've not really done much about the corrupt politicians who use the actual banking system in the country to loot Country funds. Crypto has created jobs for many Nigerian youths who work online as crypto traders, forex traders, software developers, writers, content creators, etc., and earn decent wages from foreign customers. Crypto has been banned, unbanned, and banned again The Role of Autonomy, Cryptocurrency, and Daos in Potentially Lifting Nigerians From Poverty With the country divided between several tribes and two major religions (Christianity and Islam), tribal and religious sentiments have often been used by malicious politicians to keep Nigerians fighting against each other and refuse to unite in fighting against the corrupt leaders who are the real problem. Tribal and religious crises often mar Nigerian elections to the benefit of politicians who capitalize on such crises to rig elections and discriminate in government. Also, leaders who steal often defend their tribesmen from anybody who may try to prosecute them. This is a huge problem in the country, with many jobs and industries often being based on tribe instead of qualification. Autonomy: To solve this fundamental problem, Nigerians must start thinking of themselves first as individuals instead of as members of a tribe or religion. They must prioritize their welfare as citizens in voting and making other electoral and job related decisions in order to get competent leaders and office holders who will transform the country. Regional autonomy must be prioritized over the current seemingly unworkable "federal system" which has only created much infighting. Autonomy is critical to the development of Nigeria! When Satoshi Nakamoto released Bitcoin, he was trying to create a decentralized financial system that would make financial opportunities fairly available to everyone around the world instead of to just a few members of the elite class who capitalized on the unfair legacy centralized system to get ahead of the rest of the population. Such a system is sorely needed in Nigeria, where inequality is even worse from widespread poverty and illiteracy. Many Nigerians use mobile phones, and with a little knowledge of Cryptocurrency, they can invest and get out of poverty without having to depend on a government that doesn't really seem to care about them. Cryptocurrency: Cryptocurrency could be the best opportunity for Nigerians to benefit from the financial system. Many Nigerians have never really experienced a free and fair election in their lifetime. This is due to widespread electoral malpractice that seems to have become the norm. Just like Twitter, which provides a global voice for the Nigerian people, which the government cannot forcefully shut down, DAOs will provide an even more decentralized platform for Nigerians to unite, organize, plan, and execute digital infrastructure for the good of the country. DAOs will allow Nigerians to practice democracy and governance in a free and safe virtual environment for education and networking purposes. Also, DAOs will allow Nigerians to influence the development of Web 3 to enable the developers to come up with software that is better suited to the Nigerian environment. DAOs: DAOs will provide a more sophisticated, unstoppable cyber voice for Nigerians around the world. Conclusion Nigerians have been held down by a corrupt, tyrannical government that seemingly would prefer to keep the people divided, poor, and uneducated. However, the Web 3 vision of democratizing the Internet and financial system is in complete opposition to such a system. With crypto concepts like autonomy, individualism, and sovereignty encapsulated in DAOs, Nigerians have a global technological movement they can leverage to come out of the country's economic crisis. is a groundbreaking DAO technology that Nigerians (and anyone around the world) can use to opt out of a corrupt leadership system that doesn't really represent them. I had the opportunity to sit down with 8an, co-founder of /Reach, for a discussion about /Reach’s mission to help fix Crypto Twitter. /Reach, Q1: Can you tell us about yourself and your route to web3? My background started in consumer goods. I started my career at Rocket Internet as a Global Venture Developer, where we would launch day-one revenue-generating businesses in Europe and Emerging markets within 90 days from conception. After having gone the entrepreneurial route, namely as a founding team member of Numan (which grew to be the largest digital men’s health clinic in Europe), I founded Particle, a real-world assets on-chain fractionalization protocol focused on fine art. We famously tokenised Banksy’s $13M Love is in the Air in January 2022. I’ve been passively investing in Bitcoin since 2014, but I became more active in 2017 and then more ingrained in the community in 2021, like a lot of people. Q2: When Elon Musk bought Twitter a year ago, he promised to fix its bot problem once and for all. Do you think it is a herculean task to beat Twitter bots? It’s definitely not easy, but as with everything, recognising that there is a problem is a big first step. I think it's very much doable, especially with Musk's approach, which is to essentially make it economically deterrent for bots to exist - a similar approach to what /Reach is doing to those seeking to abuse or game the system. The goal, in the long run, is to make it unviable for a bot or exploiter ecosystem to exist. Q3: You have rightly pointed out that Crypto Twitter has a massive bot problem. Can you tell us how serious this problem is? Reportedly, up to 10% of X’s user base are bots. How deep this problem goes, we’ll only know once Musk reveals the extent of the issue as he has promised. What I can say is that within Crypto Twitter, it definitely is something everyone--from project owners, community leaders, artists, and individuals--sees as detrimental to their efforts. Q4: What can you tell us about the founding of /Reach, and how do you intend to tackle this problem? Attention and reach are the greatest challenges for brands, community builders, artists, and projects to crack. The X algorithm is broken, and Musk’s Ads Revenue Sharing program has fallen short of properly remunerating accounts for their reach. The “pay influencers” model is broken too - pseudo/low-value engagement doesn't help bring true visibility to comms that need to be promoted – with unfair and opaque pricing structures. Lastly, in an effort to maintain integrity on their profiles, even a brand’s greatest champions are reluctant to show support. Many aren’t even aware of which pieces of content would be most impactful for them to share. To elaborate further: Modern online tribes and communities, from gaming servers to Web3 projects, have become advertising-resistant, disregarding messages even from Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs). Traditional advertising struggles to infiltrate these tight-knit digital circles authentically. Reputable Web2 brands, despite having considerable media budgets, have yet to effectively access these communities and tribes in a manner that feels genuine and is welcomed. The outsider perception of brands is a significant barrier. Acceptance within these communities hinges on genuine endorsement from active, core tribe members. We approach this problem by harnessing the very ethos of Web3 in having the participants in a network equally participate in its success. The strategies we employ include the promotion of content, products, and services within active, fervent communities across diverse platforms – Web3, gaming, sports, and gambling, among others – organically and unobtrusively; overcoming the ‘Outsider Stigma’: Navigating through the walls of advertising resistance by enabling promotions through trusted, native voices within each tribe or community; and delivering a win-win scenario, allowing communities to monetize their user base while brands authentically connect with fresh, engaged audiences. Q5: What role does Twitter play in keeping the crypto community active? Why is Twitter the platform with the most crypto users? Twitter is our open forum and our playground, it is extremely important in the crypto community. It’s supported, of course, by Discord, Telegram, and WeChat, but Twitter’s model of short, bite-size news-esque delivered content is perfect for the fast-paced nature of Crypto. Q6: What are some of the strategies employed by /Reach in combating Crypto’s Twitter bot problem? We won’t be able to fully solve X’s bot problem alone, but we will be able to make sure it does not affect the spend creators put through the /Reach protocol. The /Reach protocol incentivizes both quality engagement and volume of engagement –both necessary in the success of visibility and fostering high caliber conversations and reach. We’ve implemented purpose-built, AI-powered, dynamic algorithms to power this effort. It is this quality engagement involving real people with authentic opinions that is our greatest weapon against bots on Twitter. Q7: From the information I have, you seem to have collected together a group of very impressive backers. Can you tell us a little bit about them and how you work with them? All of them are users of the /Reach protocol throughout the beta phase. The product and its results spoke for itself and they wanted to get involved. Many of the big names we speak to regularly to get their advice and perspective within the realm of their expertise. Q8: What are the next steps for /Reach after your launch? Grow the /Reach audience. We have already signed two deals with major communities to start using the /Reach protocol and have a pipeline of over 20 conversations at varying degrees of the sales cycle. The goal is to grow to an audience of more than 1,000,000 users within three months of launch.

Every crypto hype cycle so far has been defined by narratives. Usually, these narratives anchor on some kind of utility of talk about what's coming next. This post provides some predictions about what the narratives for the upcoming hype cycle can (or maybe should) look like. We are barreling toward the end of another year. And that can only mean one thing. It’s almost “year-in-review” and “the year ahead” report time. As predictable and somewhat formulaic as the publication of these reports is, I do like reading a whole bunch of takes on where the market has been and where we are headed. In review, 2023 hit differently for a lot of reasons. On the back of several big scandals and massive fraud, has gone through a massive identity crisis. Before 2023, it felt exciting to work in crypto. Like you were out on the frontier, nurturing a new technology with world-changing possibilities. crypto Then, several high-profile projects fell apart, big names in the industry got thrown in jail, and lots of people lost a lot of money because it turned out a big part of the dream was too good to be true. Give people open money systems, and one of the first things they will do is amass a scammy empire built on fake coins, too much leverage, bad math, or some combination of the three. The result of the past year or more — against the backdrop of tell-all books and increased scrutiny across the board — is that a lot of people have become disenchanted with the space and moved on to new opportunities and new frontiers (by which I mostly mean AI). But, despite the downward pressure and tough market conditions, there is still a lot of activity and reason for an optimistic outlook, like maybe a sea change is happening. At a very high level, over the past few weeks, we’ve already been getting a glimpse of the big picture stuff. Generally, the old heads have been dusting off the socials and posting hype charts about the 1-2 combo of the pending Bitcoin ETF and the upcoming Bitcoin halving. The bullishness of the Bitcoin ETF approval centers on the idea that institutional money — including some of the trillions of dollars handled by financial advisors and family offices will find its way into crypto via traditional retirement and investment products. Currently, the SEC is deciding whether or not to approve a Bitcoin ETF because there are continued concerns about things like market manipulation, etc. The ETF hype is not new, and in the past, the SEC has rejected dozens of similar proposals. Nevertheless, many market watchers feel like there is pent-up demand, and a lot of people are saying that an approval will bring a lot of liquidity to the space. Another reason for the change in tune is that the next Bitcoin halving is right around the corner. By design, the Bitcoin halving happens every four years, with Olympic-like timing. Right now, because of the way works, the amount of Bitcoin issued as a reward for mining a new block (which happens every ten minutes or so) will be reduced from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC sometime in April 2024. Bitcoin’s block reward system The halving is part of Bitcoin’s pre-determined issuance schedule. The regular reductions in block reward create built-in scarcity, which, combined with increased demand overtime, results in the upward price movement dynamic that bitcoin is known for. Both of these market-driving forces are focused on bitcoin, but historically, when the price of bitcoin moves, the rest of the crypto market follows. Another factor underpinning the reformulation of the hype cycle is that free markets can be brutal, but they can also be efficient. In some regards, the self-regulatory mechanism of the crypto-free market flushed out the bad actors or the projects that were vaporware. If there is a silver lining to crypto’s comeuppance, it’s that the projects and protocols and people that remain had a strong enough foundation to survive through a series of worst-case scenarios. In a lot of ways, this past year was a test of how resilient decentralized systems really are. Now the question is: Where does this all go from here? Predictions about what kinds of new narratives will emerge Beyond speculation | Pivot from the aspirational to utility Every hype cycle so far has been defined by a trend that helps bring new people into the market. After the first halving, the big thing was just making it easier for everyday retail consumers and investors to buy, sell, and hold Bitcoin and other cryptos. This is when a lot of the big-name exchanges and wallet services launched, or at least the idea of having centralized exchanges to facilitate ease of use took hold. The next hype cycle was largely fueled by the initial coin offering craze, where new crypto projects with massive valuations seemed to be launching every day. Most of the projects were overvalued and were built on a flimsy whitepaper and little else. Eventually, died, taking a lot of investor money and market attention with it. The last hype cycle was largely fueled by speculation around the idea of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the idea that we were all going to move to the metaverse. the ICO boom For good measure, there was also excitement and massive amounts of money flowing into other kinds of tech, such as algorithmically-back stablecoins (such as the Terra Luna project, which collapsed in May 2022, erasing about $50 billion of value with it and was a main trigger of the crypto market wipeout events of 2023). Undoubtedly, there will be a focal point of the upcoming hype cycle. It will be interesting to see how this time is the same or different and what will anchor the main narratives. Likely, everyday investors are skeptical of crypto markets and products. But as overall utility and ease of use increases, maybe the focal point moves past pure speculation, and instead, people start to understand crypto as an alternative to the traditional financial system — and one that offers efficiency made possible by digitally-native technology. Crypto-based services like payroll, easy to use , or super cheap payment apps will go a long way to make crypto feel useful for everyday activities. Eventually, for most people, crypto protocols are like wiring that is hidden from view, but helps to power useful tech that works better than anything that’s come before. DeFi On-chain is the new online | Visibility and accountability help maturity The accessibility and overall ease of use of on-chain data has got to be one of the biggest developments since the last hype cycle. Now, there are a number of ways to query on-chain data and to view things like transactions, asset movements, or overall use and activity. This visibility helps everyone to understand better which projects are actually useful and useable and which ones don’t have active user bases. User-centric analytics help everyone better understand crypto uses, and the sense of public accountability will likely become more important following the massive fraud and other sketchy behavior of last year. As more and more real-world data move on-chain, the analytics will become increasingly robust, further driving an understanding of how various protocols, apps, and products are solving problems and driving a more digitally-native experience. | End the days of tribes Era of composability Since the beginning, crypto has been dominated by tribes. There’s probably some kind of psychological reason why humans have to develop groups of fierce proponents and advocates in order to get new ideas off the group at scale. We’ve seen these echoes before in other corners of life. Crypto’s big personalities are also a product of the internet. In the early days, crypto was internet money for internet people. But that edgy-ness needs to be dull for digital assets to start to make more sense for more people. In time, maybe the tech makes the tribe irrelevant. One word that seems to be becoming more and more popular across crypto is composability. The basic idea is that a well-designed protocol or app should be composable or customizable in a way that it can work and be useful across a range of systems. The most useful internet will be a network of networks, with little friction and little cost to move between protocols to achieve the best and most efficient objectives. The tribes might have served a purpose, and maybe they filled a void of marketing for projects like Bitcoin in the early days. But over time, decentralized becomes more like the rails that new systems run. Sometimes, those rails will intersect. Sometimes, they will overlap. And sometimes, they will go off into unknown and unexplored directions. It’s likely that tribalism becomes less important and is replaced by how well a protocol or app can work across multiple protocols and ecosystems. Bitcoin is its own thing | An asset with its own place on the space-time continuum This might seem to counter the previous point, which just underscored how distinctions will become less important over time. But even still, it’s an important distinction. There will be new kinds of protocols that are built within the crypto ethos, and there will be a tremendous amount of value created and captured. And as more time goes on, it will become increasingly obvious that Bitcoin is a one-of-a-kind asset. It exists because it created a way to transfer value over the internet without the need for intermediaries. But there are a lot of other factors that make Bitcoin unique, including the simplicity and elegance of the Bitcoin protocol, its founding story, the way (or fairness) of its launch, its early network effects, its first mover advantage, and even the timing that can never really be replicated or repeated in the exact same way. The next hype cycle, with all its various inputs and offshoots, likely reinforces that there will never be another kind of network with all of the attributes of Bitcoin. Inevitability of digitally-native money In the early days of the Industrial Revolution, as machines started to replace labor done by hand, people who practiced trades found themselves out of work. Their jobs were lost to mechanization. This didn’t happen all at once, and it didn’t happen without a lot of upheaval, to the point where there were movements of people literally raging against the machines. And then governments passed laws (and executed people) for raging against the machines. There are some parallels between what’s happening today — and the ongoing digital transformation. Right now, people are scared. People are losing their jobs to technologies like ChatGPT, and all of the prosperity and cushiness of the information age feels like it’s at risk. In a lot of ways, crypto began as a protest movement. Bitcoin was born on the back end of the financial crisis of 2008. But somewhere along the way, the protest part got dulled by the get rich quick schemers. The future of crypto will echo its protest past, which focused on issues of empowerment and user-centric ideals of privacy and security. As the digital future unfolds, two things will become more obvious: That old systems based on bureaucracies and analog technologies won’t be able to keep up with the real-time pace of transactions and interactions. And that digital technologies can create a more level baseline to build from, but only if the systems are accessible. This all means that by design, future systems need to be permissionless or open; otherwise, we run the risk of just rebuilding new versions of the old gated, wonky systems. 2024 and beyond So, as the year ends and the industry looks behind and ahead, there will likely be a lot of processing. Undoubtedly, the next hype cycle brings new ideas and new ways of understanding what crypto is and why it is useful.
