In that time, we’ve significantly expanded our offering through partnerships with some of the biggest names in travel, including Expedia and KAYAK. Our accommodation selection multiplied to over 2.2 million properties, and we introduced flights with 600+ airlines as well as 410,000+ activities, with a total of over 3 million travel products now available on Travala.com. Our team has also more than doubled in size to accommodate our growth, with hires across all departments from the management team to security, developers, marketing, and customer support. All of these developments have culminated in tremendous growth in customers, bookings, and revenue, with our gross revenue growing from less than $1 million in Q1 2020 to over $22 million in Q1 2024. Ishan Pandey: During our last discussion, you highlighted some pivotal adjustments made at Travala.com in response to the pandemic. Looking at the current times, how has your business model or strategy changed to align with the new dynamics of the travel industry? Juan Otero: From the rise of domestic travel to the influx of digital nomads across the globe, the pandemic has prompted the emergence of many new trends that look likely to continue well into the future. Where we once might’ve promoted a weekend away, we’re now encouraging longer, more immersive experiences through marketing, exclusive mobile-only deals on stays, and by offering an average of 16% savings on hotels after booking a flight. One of the often overlooked developments in recent years has been the rapid emergence of metasearch engines. With shifting behaviours in how savvy travellers search for, compare, and book travel, we recognised the importance of these metasearch engines—which have quickly gained market share when it comes to the discovery phase of travel—and became the first crypto-friendly online travel agency to be listed on leading metasearch engines KAYAK and Google Hotels, alongside incumbents in the travel industry. Ishan Pandey: Cryptocurrencies have seen substantial growth in value and popularity since we last talked. How is Travala.com planning to capitalise on this trend? Are there new strategies or technologies you're implementing? Juan Otero: We’ve honed our web3 strategy by partnering with projects to promote cross-community growth and leverage the power of highly engaged web3 audiences. As a result, we now have over 100 cryptocurrency payment options and frequently conduct campaigns with partners to promote the ability to travel with crypto on Travala.com. From leading web3 events like TOKEN2049 and Paris Blockchain Week to traditional brands interested in expanding their audience—such as Marriott International and the Catalan Tourist Board—we’re leveraging our position as the bridge between the world of traditional travel and the web3 space to continue underscoring our reputation as the leading crypto-native travel booking service. As approximately 75% of our bookings are purchased with crypto, we experience a strong correlation between a crypto bull market and high booking volume on our platform, given the additional value available for travellers to derive from their crypto assets in dollar-value terms.

TRAVELING IN ICELAND here CHAPTER X - TRAVELING IN ICELAND It ought, one would have thought, to have been night, even in the sixty-fifth parallel of latitude; but still the nocturnal illumination did not surprise me. For in Iceland, during the months of June and July, the sun never sets. The temperature, however, was very much lower than I expected. I was cold, but even that did not affect me so much as ravenous hunger. Welcome indeed, therefore, was the hut which hospitably opened its doors to us. It was merely the house of a peasant, but in the matter of hospitality, it was worthy of being the palace of a king. As we alighted at the door the master of the house came forward, held out his hand, and without any further ceremony, signaled to us to follow him. We followed him, for to accompany him was impossible. A long, narrow, gloomy passage led into the interior of this habitation, made from beams roughly squared by the ax. This passage gave ingress to every room. The chambers were four in number—the kitchen, the workshop, where the weaving was carried on, the general sleeping chamber of the family, and the best room, to which strangers were especially invited. My uncle, whose lofty stature had not been taken into consideration when the house was built, contrived to knock his head against the beams of the roof. We were introduced into our chamber, a kind of large room with a hard earthen floor, and lighted by a window, the panes of which were made of a sort of parchment from the intestines of sheep—very far from transparent. The bedding was composed of dry hay thrown into two long red wooden boxes, ornamented with sentences painted in Icelandic. I really had no idea that we should be made so comfortable. There was one objection to the house, and that was, the very powerful odor of dried fish, of macerated meat, and of sour milk, which three fragrances combined did not at all suit my olfactory nerves. As soon as we had freed ourselves from our heavy traveling costume, the voice of our host was heard calling to us to come into the kitchen, the only room in which the Icelanders ever make any fire, no matter how cold it may be. My uncle, nothing loath, hastened to obey this hospitable and friendly invitation. I followed. The kitchen chimney was made on an antique model. A large stone standing in the middle of the room was the fireplace; above, in the roof, was a hole for the smoke to pass through. This apartment was kitchen, parlor and dining room all in one. On our entrance, our worthy host, as if he had not seen us before, advanced ceremoniously, uttered a word which means "be happy," and then kissed both of us on the cheek. His wife followed, pronounced the same word, with the same ceremonial, then the husband and wife, placing their right hands upon their hearts, bowed profoundly. This excellent Icelandic woman was the mother of nineteen children, who, little and big, rolled, crawled, and walked about in the midst of volumes of smoke arising from the angular fireplace in the middle of the room. Every now and then I could see a fresh white head, and a slightly melancholy expression of countenance, peering at me through the vapor. Both my uncle and myself, however, were very friendly with the whole party, and before we were aware of it, there were three or four of these little ones on our shoulders, as many on our boxes, and the rest hanging about our legs. Those who could speak kept crying out saellvertu in every possible and impossible key. Those who did not speak only made all the more noise. This concert was interrupted by the announcement of supper. At this moment our worthy guide, the eider-duck hunter, came in after seeing to the feeding and stabling of the horses—which consisted in letting them loose to browse on the stunted green of the Icelandic prairies. There was little for them to eat, but moss and some very dry and innutritious grass; next day they were ready before the door, some time before we were. "Welcome," said Hans. Then tranquilly, with the air of an automaton, without any more expression in one kiss than another, he embraced the host and hostess and their nineteen children. As soon as the meal was over, the children disappeared, whilst the grown people sat around the fireplace, on which was placed turf, heather, cow dung and dried fish-bones. As soon as everybody was sufficiently warm, a general dispersion took place, all retiring to their respective couches. Our hostess offered to pull off our stockings and trousers, according to the custom of the country, but as we graciously declined to be so honored, she left us to our bed of dry fodder. Next day, at five in the morning, we took our leave of these hospitable peasants. My uncle had great difficulty in making them accept a sufficient and proper remuneration. Hans then gave the signal to start. We had scarcely got a hundred yards from Gardar, when the character of the country changed. The soil began to be marshy and boggy, and less favorable to progress. To the right, the range of mountains was prolonged indefinitely like a great system of natural fortifications, of which we skirted the glacis. That evening, after fording the Alfa and the Heta, two rivers rich in trout and pike, we were compelled to pass the night in a deserted house, worthy of being haunted by all the fays of Scandinavian mythology. The King of Cold had taken up his residence there, and made us feel his presence all night. The following day was remarkable by its lack of any particular incidents. Always the same damp and swampy soil; the same dreary uniformity; the same sad and monotonous aspect of scenery. Traveling the world while working is THE dream. For a long time now I hear people in my professional and personal surrounding talking about their wish to become a digital nomad. But so far none of them ever did. I want to encourage you to try it, if you feel like this could be right for you. Don’t be scared, it’s so easy! Who I am I’m Dominik from Germany and I founded my cloud telephony company a couple of years ago. I work in Berlin and have a small team of great people in my office there. Last year when summer turned into autumn I decided to get away and booked a flight to Thailand. I would love to share my experiences, how I prepared and chose my destination, how I got started in Thailand and what my daily life looks like. Hopefully I can inspire you to give the idea of becoming a digital nomad another thought. Why I’m able to run my company while traveling With my kind of work I don’t need to be physically in a specific place. In my business you can work from anywhere, as long as you have a good internet connection, a laptop and a phone. Also, the digital infrastructure is crucial for organizing, updating and communicating. As we are selling to companies, we are of course using this tool for our internal interactions as well. It’s a very convenient way to communicate reliably, no matter where you are. Beside that, we as a team are organizing our work a lot with online tools like YouTrack, Trello and Wire. So right from the start, my work never tied me to a physical office. Now that I’m working remotely, I’m not using more applications than before, I’m just using them with higher intensity. cloud telephony systems Running a company while traveling is even easier if you are a freelancer or working alone without a team, because you don’t have any responsibility towards other people. I’m in the lucky position though, that I have very supportive, reliable and responsible people working with me - so I didn’t need to worry about leaving them. Trying to make something new work, while just having started traveling, especially if you have a team that relies on you, will be hard and might even interrupt your daily business. Better to prepare as much as possible in advance. How I chose my destination When I was thinking about which country to choose as my first destination I was looking at three things: Low cost of living, good weather and great food - Thailand ticks all the boxes. I did some research especially on a platform called which was a great help. On this website you have all kinds of cities all around the world with ratings in different categories, which might be crucial for your decision on which country to work in. nomadlist When I explained my plan to work in Thailand to people, they often told me that I’m probably just going to work 24/7 and have a bad internet connection, but they couldn’t be more wrong. How I prepared for leaving After I booked the flight I felt relieved that I made the decision and the plan became suddenly pretty real. I researched topics like visa and vaccines and actually had very little preparation to do. Because I don’t have to be physically present in the office to do my work, there weren’t a lot of big changes. I had one-on-one talks with all my workmates to make sure that everybody feels good about me leaving and knows what to do. For me, the biggest task was to let go mentally and give my team more responsibility and power in decision-making than they have had before. As mentioned above, implementing certain tools for communication and organisation with your team before leaving will help immensely and take off a lot of the stress in the early days of settling in to your new environment. My start in Thailand Suddenly the day came and I got on the plane, escaping Germany’s cold weather with a smile on my face, excited where this journey will take me and if everything will turn out the way I had planned. I didn’t really have any expectations, so I felt really positive. The first few days in Bangkok I mostly explored the city, cured my jet lag and allowed myself to work only a couple of hours a day. I met a group of people who were also here to work and got inspired by them to go to Chiang Mai. This decision was the perfect choice, I ended up staying there for a long time. How I organized my work and life After arriving in Chiang Mai, the first thing I was looking for was a coworking space. That was really easy, as the digital nomad community there is huge and supportive. After checking out some spaces I found the perfect coworking and coliving space through a Facebook group. You get a desk, a meal per day, drinks, a coconut and a more than perfect internet connection. As an extra you can also use the swimming pool and attend yoga classes. The difficulties of the work and life balance Suddenly there is this big community around me, all working, exchanging and socializing. As there is so much distraction, at the beginning it was challenging to have a good work and life balance. For the start I made myself a plan for the week, scheduled my work time and my free time and tried to stick to that as much as possible. I do love my work but it was surprisingly difficult for me to sit down and work, while knowing that other people were enjoying their free time in the sun. Anyway the plan helped me a lot and I got comfortable with my work routine. I definitely recommend setting and tracking goals for each week or month and allocating fixed time slots for work and freetime and sticking to this plan. What a typical working day looks like Germany is 6 hours behind Thailand, so with that in mind I usually sleep as long as I want because it makes more sense to start late. After waking up, I have a big breakfast and enjoy the weather outside, starting work around 10:30 am. I work 2,5 hours until I have my lunch break with the other people who are working besides me. After that I go back to my desk until around 6 pm and then shut down my laptop and have a good time. Like this I don’t have a 40-hour week and that was definitely part of the plan. In the evenings I either attend one of the many community events or just hang out with some people. On the weekend I learned to stay completely away from work, but rather go on trips with the others around Chiang Mai. Anyway I’m always reachable for my team, also during the night, for emergencies. Even though I am working less hours, the environment and weather motivate me to give my very best at work. I am more efficient, achieving more in less time and therefore can enjoy my free time even more because I really feel like I deserve it. The community It’s inspirational and distracting at the same time to have so many new people around you. You want to get to know everybody and often find yourself in hour long interesting talks but you still also have to get your work done. The perfect socializing time is definitely in the evening. There are a lot of meetups that are mostly self-organized by digital nomads and some are organized by the coworking space itself. Usually you can choose between two different kinds of events in the evening, either for socializing or to gain knowledge. The first one is self-explaining, the second ones are mostly workshops from people in the digital nomad scene, who talk about digital business topics, like marketing or coding. You can get lots of inspiration and even free content through those events. The community here consists mostly of people like me: white men in their mid thirties. Most of them are freelancers and independent of any team or other people. A lot of them are in the coding business, which is an area of work that is easy for digital nomads. Besides coding, there are a lot of people in marketing, design and other digital jobs. What you need to be able to work while traveling It’s really not complicated! You basically just need three things to become a digital nomad: First you need to want it. With that I mean that you really have to like the kind of way of living and working. Get an idea of the lifestyle that’s close to reality, before deciding. Second, you need the right infrastructure. Most importantly you need to be independent of a physical place and have the right tools on your hand. If you don’t have this infrastructure yet, maybe it’s possible for you to get there though. Last but not least you have to be good at self-organizing and flexibility. If you’re not used to working completely self-organized it can be tough to motivate yourself at the beginning and be disciplined enough not to get distracted. But there are a lot of strategies that can help. Flexibility is also an important trait to have, especially, if there is time difference to your clients or workmates. YOU can work while traveling! If you came this far I guess you are also interested in working while traveling. If you are already thinking about it, I would say just do it. If you want it and you have the infrastructure, flexibility and self-organization to do so - then just book your flight and this becomes your reality. Also keep in mind: You can always just try it for a couple of weeks or months - there is always a way back, if you don’t feel like it wasn’t the right choice for you. But if you don’t try - you will never know and always wonder!

How I Run My Company While Traveling
