In this interview for the "Behind the Startup" series, Ishan Pandey talks to Eric Parker, co-founder of Giddy, a startup focused on making DeFi (decentralized finance) accessible to everyone. Eric shares his personal journey and what led him to co-found Giddy, the challenges they faced during the ideation phase and the factors that differentiate their platform from other crypto wallets on the market. Giddy co-founder Eric Parker talks about the personal journey that led to the creation of Giddy Ishan Pandey: Hi Eric Parker. Great to have you here for our "Behind the Startup" series. Can you share with us a little about your personal journey and what led you to co-found Giddy? Eric Parker: First off, I’m a huge nerd. My background is in Computer Science, so my career has been spent writing apps for all kinds of tech companies. I love tinkering with code and computers, which led me to my first experiment with Bitcoin mining in 2012. I’m one of the many who let a hard drive go to the landfill with old private keys on it. Whoops. Tough lesson to learn, but that led me to building Ethereum miners with my brother Ethan, and eventually to DeFi. I was absolutely enthralled by the idea that we could write code and deploy apps to the blockchain. I got hooked and couldn’t put it down, which led to yet another startup idea for my brother and I. Ishan Pandey: What inspired you and your brother Ethan to start Giddy? Can you walk us through the journey from ideation to launch? Eric Parker:  So, I’m just living my life being a massive nerd and loving DeFi when I met someone who needed crypto help. They got some money stuck on the Binance Smart Chain (bad contract migration) so I helped them un-stuck a significant dollar amount. Turns out this person was a tech investor, which got us talking about solving the usability problem of DeFi on a massive scale. It’s just too hard for most normal people to do. We wanted to make it fast, easy, secure, and fun for everyone,  so we raised money based on that plan and here we are! Ishan Pandey: Giddy aims to make DeFi accessible to everyone. How does your platform achieve this goal, and what makes it stand out from other crypto wallets on the market? Eric Parker:  World-class user experience, and a focus on decentralized technology. Can you talk about the importance of UX/UI design in the crypto industry, and how it impacts user adoption? Eric Parker:  First of all, thank you for the compliment! We think about UI/UX all the time. Technology is only as useful as it is usable. UI/UX is all about a human quickly and easily solving a real-world problem using tech. So many crypto projects are miraculous feats of decentralized technology but are largely inaccessible due to the burden of DIY private key wallets, fiat-crypto interactions, multiple chains, obtuse tooling, and so on. I believe DeFi has the potential to offer financial freedom to more people around the world, and if we’re going to accomplish that, it must be done in a way that everyone can access. Otherwise we’ve got this beautiful but untouchable creation that we can’t put into the hands of those who need it most. Ishan Pandey: Security is a critical concern for anyone using a crypto wallet. How does Giddy ensure the safety of its users' assets and data? Eric Parker:  Security in crypto hinges upon management of the private key. We want people to stop writing their private key on sticky notes and also not have to stamp it into metal plates and bury it in their walls at home. Ready for some technical terms? Multi-party computation and threshold share security. MPC for wallet recovery and TSS for private key security. Our users are not required to write down a private key. They log in with Apple, Google, or email and we break up their private key into multiple factors such as a backup password, google authenticator, sms, and phone biometrics. With Giddy, your raw private key is never stored in a database, never placed in cloud storage, and never even crosses the internet. Instead the private key is represented by a TSS algorithm and the app uses your backup factors to recompose the key locally on your device whenever you need to sign a transaction. And all of this magic happens as fast as you can enter your device’s PIN or do a biometric scan, so it remains very safe and very usable. Ishan Pandey: Can you tell us about any notable achievements or milestones that Giddy has reached so far, and how they reflect your vision for the company? Eric Parker: A few noteworthy things: ● Giddy Token launched April 2022, it’s a utility token that supports one-tap staking ● Launched fully working app on Polygon Network ● On-ramp with Coinbase, Sardine, Ramp, Transak available ● Auto-compound rewards with Aave, Balancer, Curve, Gains Network Pools ● Onboarded thousands into DeFi with zero previous crypto experience, including at least one 83-year old grandmother who is currently staking in Curve All of these accomplishments represent an enormous amount of hard work from the dedicated team at Giddy to bring our vision of mass DeFi adoption to life. And there’s so much more coming this year! Ishan Pandey: The recent FTX debacle has caused quite a stir in the industry. What are your thoughts on this, and how do you see this impacting the development of web3 technology and the formal economy? Eric Parker:  FTX was a human failure, not a crypto failure. Too much money was being controlled by a small group of people with conflicted interests and no oversight or proper regulatory burden. FTX put billions of dollars at risk that never should have been accessible for risk exposure in the first place. Ishan Pandey: Blockchain technology has been largely unregulated. What are your thoughts on regulating blockchain, and how do you think this will impact the industry as a whole? Eric Parker:  In my view, regulation has two primary objectives. Protect consumers, and encourage economic growth. Good regulation should help consumers spot a bad actor by making it clear what the good ones look like. Good regulation should also provide a framework for the honest builder to set up shop and provide a service to users. Crypto regulation is especially challenging because the subject matter is so technical. That’s why I think leaders in the crypto industry should be working with regulators to offer guidance on what good crypto regulation should look like. We’ve had leaders in the crypto space doing this important work for years already, and I think we’re only benefited from more builders getting involved. Giddy is headquartered in Utah and we have actively been working with the state to push forward smart, fair, and effective regulation. Things like an MTL carve out for non-custodial wallet providers, a DAO legal entity with ability to redact founding team names, and state-sponsored network validation. Let’s work together with our government leaders to provide education and guidance on this subject before politicians with conflicted interests make it difficult for the space to thrive. Your bitcoin assets may be kept secure and easily accessed with the help of a cryptocurrency wallet. Since there is no physical token associated with cryptocurrency like cash, it is a relatively immaterial type of value storage. Just a bunch of code that lives on a different, larger blockchain. How Wallets Work What do you receive for your money when you invest in Bitcoin (BTC)? Public and private keys are needed to conduct transactions on the Bitcoin network. Consider the public key the equivalent of a bank account number in that you may offer it to anybody without fear of their gaining access to your money. Since you don't have access to the private keys for your cryptocurrency wallet while storing it on a centralized exchange, you do not own your cryptocurrency. This occurs because the private keys are kept in an exchange. You may get access to these wallets by participating in such exchanges. Still, your account might instantly be compromised if the exchange is hacked, assaulted, or anything else. In addition, there's always the risk that your money may go missing for good. Consequently, you realize that you can't get your coins without the corresponding keys. But what are these keys? The system will check your public key whenever you join a network to see whether you've already registered an account. It functions similarly to an email address in that it is where others may send you bitcoin. The seed phrase used to generate your 64-character private key consists of 12 words. It is the same as your account's password in all practical senses. It may be used to sign transactions and prove ownership of the corresponding public key pair. Regarding crypto wallets, there are multiple options a user can choose. In a perfect world, you'd have the freedom to choose the mode that's most compatible with your usual cryptographic workflow. However, you should refrain from using an electronic payment system whenever feasible. The Types Of Wallets (or cold wallets) are encrypted physical wallets. These wallets can be connected to online wallets like MetaMask for interacting with decentralized applications (dapps) and NFT marketplace sites like OpenSea. Hardware wallets The term " " describes a suite of applications that users may install on a mobile device. Remember that a mobile app that supports Bitcoin storage does not mean it does not perform the functions of a custodian. You should download the Exodus or Atomic mobile app to set up a mobile wallet. mobile wallet are digital wallets that run on computers and may be installed directly from the desktop. The private keys to your digital wallet are stored locally on your computer, making it accessible even when disconnected from the internet. Keep in mind that desktop wallets are often more advanced than mobile wallets, with a wider range of features and technological complexity. These additions may provide users greater leeway in how and when they sign contracts and help them maintain a higher degree of anonymity. Desktop Wallets Paper wallets are another option, but this is outdated, with secure mobile or hardware wallets being a better choice. is a wallet funded by Huobi, that enables users to store, buy, and exchange cryptocurrencies and also provides a cloud wallet with multi-chain support. Supported cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, USDT, Solana, and XRP, with 50 cryptocurrencies supported. The wallet has integrated fiat on-ramps with third-party providers, including Mercuryo, Banxa, Xanpool, and Simplex. iToken This way users can buy crypto with fiat currencies including USD, EUR, and GBP. The wallet also integrates with third-party providers, such as Transak, Wyre, and Ramp.Network to provide more ways for fiat payment access. Also, like aggregator platforms, iToken offers real-time data, for new traders who want to learn more about the current market. For the NFT Data function, in particular, users can keep track of the different columns of data they need and choose the field they are interested in to create an NFT Data poster right away and share it with others. The wallet aims to better the login layer of Web3 navigation and exploration by adding more services from the NFT marketplace, fiat off-ramps, social connection features, and much more. It will give people a platform and tools that are easier to use and automatically work with Web3 services. Conclusion Crypto wallets enable the storage of cryptocurrencies, with users being able to recieve and send crypto. There are different wallet types, with non-custodial wallets giving users access to their private keys, while centralized wallets (usually found one exchanges) control the keys, while enabling the user to still send and recieve crypto.

Crypto Wallets in 2022 and Why They're Important

I’ve been buying coins for a couple of years now, I’ve tried nearly all the popular fiat-to-crypto exchanges out there, and it takes so much time and dedication to find the service that ticks all the boxes. I decided to finally make a complete list of platforms where I can get crypto in exchange for fiat. FYI: As for Coinbase&Binance, although they are definitely trading-friendly, I wouldn’t want to keep my assets there, because I am very worried about all the security and centralization staff. If you don’t want to end up in the “ ” situation, you need to pay extra for withdrawing to the non-custodial wallet. not your keys, not your coins We all know how annoying this can get, so I prefer using less mainstream exchanges to get crypto transferred directly to my wallet. These exchange fees mentioned were compared to Kraken once. I used something around $200 on each platform. Simplex Exchange Fees Review Simplex does make sure that your crypto purchases are smooth and simple. Once you go to their website, you’ll see a big inviting button “Buy Crypto” and you have no choice but to follow it. After clicking the button, the service warns you that you will be redirected to their partner’s website to finalize the purchase. I had $200 to play around with and entered the amount in the corresponding field. The service wasn’t too transparent about the fees it collects: neither the exchange rate nor its commission fees were disclosed. Forced to calculate the rates myself, I noted the total spent amount and what I actually received, compared it to Kraken’s rate, and turned out that the Simplex exchange rate is 16% higher than the market’s. As for verification, it was an easy one. I only had to send a photo of my passport, no selfie needed, enter my address and phone number. Curiously enough, Simplex didn’t even ask for my email. Six minutes later I received the money. However, I received slightly less than I was expecting. My only guess is that while they were checking my documents, the exchange rate fluctuated. Exchange fee: 17% Moonpay Exchange Fees Review The interface and a really smooth buying process add few points to the service. I’ve been asked to provide an address, passport photo, and a selfie – a pretty standard KYC procedure. While I was completing my last step, it turned out that the initial sum that I was planning on spending was higher because of the fees that they’ve added. So instead of paying $200, I had to pay $211.65. Fifteen minutes later I received the coins in my wallet, but they were still in the pending status for 15 minutes more.
