Comprehensive List of Banks Using Blockchain Technology One of the industries which have been the most opposed to blockchain technology is the finance industry, but specifically banks. Initially, they saw the concept of blockchain as direct competition, actively removing the control they have over the funds and accounts of their customers. However, major players in the finance industry have increasingly begun to warm up to blockchain. Financial institutions and other major companies are inherently slow in adopting any new technology, but have actually been exploring various use cases for some time now. So let’s take a look at which institutes have already implemented the change or are looking into it as we speak. According to CEBNet in early 2019, of the 26 publicly listed banks in China, 12 have already adopted blockchain technology for various use cases within their systems. These banks vary from state owned ones like the Bank of China, China Construction Bank and the Agriculture Bank of China, to privately owned ones, including China Merchants bank. This is just China, before the strong public drive for blockchain adoption in late 2019, but the sentiment remains positive throughout the rest of the world. ALFA Bank from Russia, Yes Bank from India, UOB (United Overseas Bank) from Singapore, CommonWealth Bank from Australia, and LatiPay from New Zealand are a few banks that have collaborated with a US based blockchain company. The Federal Bank from India & Lulu Exchange have partnered with a Bengaluru based fin-tech company. Axis Bank, RAK Bank, & Standard Charter Bank have connected with another blockchain network. Kotak Bank, which enables blockchain based trade finance operation, partnered with Deloitte & JP Morgan Singapore. Other use-cases within the financial sector which have been developed include simplying and speeding up cross-border payments, improving trading accuracy, reliability and shorter settlement processes. Smart contracts have created benefits with the processing of transactions by removing the need of the middle man, as well as being used to develop loyalty and rewards systems. Last year, the crypto job market felt different, but overall it was a good different. 2019 was characterized by a volatile cryptocurrency market, a succession of high-profile layoffs, but also the creation of new blockchain jobs, the growth of Decentralized Finance, and increased awareness of Bitcoin. Cryptocurrency Layoffs There were high-profile layoffs at cryptocurrency companies that began at the end of 2018 and continued throughout 2019. The reasons cited for the layoffs were regulatory concerns, market conditions, and the need to streamline operations to refocus on profitability. ConsenSys, a blockchain venture production studio, announced a strategy shift to streamline its business, which led to a 13 percent reduction in its team. Steemit, a blockchain-based social media platform, laid off 70 percent of its staff, and Shapeshift, a digital asset exchange, reduced the size of its team by a third. In November 2019, New York-based blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis laid off 39 employees, about 20 percent of its workforce, and Circle reported layoffs in May and a new round in December. At the end of December, , a custodial bitcoin wallet provider, shut down operations in response to the EU’s Fifth Anti-Money Laundering Directive (5AMLD) that comes into effect on 10th January 2020. The 5AMLD introduces stricter regulatory controls across more sectors, including cryptocurrencies. Several other European firms have shut down in response to the new Directive. LinkedIn’s report is an interesting data point, but it does not reflect the overall state of the blockchain and crypto hiring market. Shivdeep Dhaliwal Ripple’s Marcus Treacher”, “Banks Need ‘Hybrid Approach to Blockchain Technology’: Are Stefan Thomas and Marcus Treacher’s predictions of hybrid blockchains a hint that Ripple may be offering a hybrid blockchain solution to their clients in the near future? Dr W. Scott Stornetta’s work from 1991–1997 predated blockchain and is based on the premise that a generated hash from a private network needs decentralised public verification. This by definition is hybrid blockchain. Private networks provide the first small step for an enterprise to embrace blockchain technology. Hybrid Blockchain: The best of both chains

Track your trades I first heard about Bitcoin back in 2011 and spent some time reading about it. I found it interesting but never considered investing in it. Again in 2013 I had a discussion with a friend about working on a startup related to Cryptocurrencies. We did some preliminary research and then dropped the idea as the regulations were not clear in India about cryptocurrencies. I did think of investing some amount in Bitcoin but was not very comfortable with all the money being tied to a Private Key which I could end up misplacing somewhere. I had not heard of any Bitcoin exchanges back then and so I let go off my chance to get into Bitcoin Bandwagon when the price of Bitcoin was around 100 USD. I finally invested in Bitcoin in June 2017. The Adhoc process and the trouble tracking One of the first learnings you have when entering cryptocurrency markets is that Bitcoin is just the tip of the iceberg there are many alt-coins. You do some research and realise there are different Exchanges and you will need to have accounts in these different exchanges to trade different alt coins. So you create accounts in different exchanges only to realise that you cannot transfer your Bitcoin/Ether to ICOs for you to get new coins that are not yet traded on any exchanges. So in a short span of time you end up with accounts in 10+exchanges, an offline wallet for Bitcoin and an offline wallet for Ether. And if you prefer to keep your alt-coins in offline wallets then you will have one many more offline wallets. Hitting the road block and the search for perfect cryptocurrency portfolio manager Very soon you will realise that keeping track of all your cryptocurrency investments is not an easy job and it cannot be done by making entries in your spreadsheet. I hit a similar roadblock around 2 months ago. I did some google searches and read up on various cryptocurrency portfolios. After some digging up I came across . I spent some time digging around their portfolio web app and I was convinced that this portfolio should be sufficient for the next two years. Since there was a limit of 200 trades on the free account I went ahead and bought the one year membership. I have found a couple of features that I use frequently and helps me sleep better that I have a handle on all my cryptocurrency investments. Everybody who is building businesses using cryptocurrencies or around cryptocurrencies should follow this approach to promote their adoption. Cointracking Entering/Tracking your trades The first step to track your portfolio is to make sure that all the purchases, withdrawals and trades are exported from any exchange/wallet you use are imported into Cointracking App. This can be done in three ways Enter manually, Import from Exchanges or automatically via the API if your exchange supports it. I had to use a combination of all these three to keep my portfolio upto date. Manual Entry for my balances from Steemit Imports from exchanges Automatic Imports through API Wallet Imports Sync from my Ether Wallet Address (Using this primarily for ICOs) I have ordered and will need to check how to sync with it once it arrives. Ledger Nano Manual Entries Make sure to enter all the relevant details. Remember to enter all the optional data as well as it can save you when you are trying to delete the trades or edit them. Trade Group helps your group one kind of trades and give details comments to remember later why you had to do a manual entry. Follow this diligently and you will thank me later. Exchange Imports In my case CEX didn’t have an API and hence I had to go with exchange import option. Cointracking does a cool job of letting you know what kind of transactions are supported by the export provided by the exchanges. Keep an eye on this. Some exchanges doesn’t provide you details about deposits and withdrawals. This can have an effect on your summaries. You might need to keep track of those and create manual entries for those to keep your Dashboard upto date. You need not worry about the duplicate imports as each trade has a unique tradeId and based on it Coin tracking will import only the new trades. Automated API Imports Cointracking gives you the details of the supported actions in the API import. Be careful if you are using the API for syncing your trades. I would suggest enabling the APIs in the exchanges only after enabling the Two Factor Authentication(2FA) and make sure that you only enable the read access in the API. When I was trying to enable the API for Binance I realised that they have all or none access. So your API will either have both Read and Trade access or none. When I saw the API integration screen of Binance I could see the bold read warning message from Cointracking saying that they do not save the API secret key as it has trading access as well. This was good sign for me and my confidence in Cointracking increased after this incident. It is still foolish that Binance doesn’t have access restrictions on their API. Wallet Imports I have never been comfortable with Offline wallets as I fear that I will miss my private keys :P I have always held back on creating one as there is no way to regain the stash if you loose your private keys. But I had to create one for ether as I wanted to participate in a couple of ICOs. As you can see from the pic Cointracking has support for Electrum and Exodus imports. I hope going forward they will add support for more wallets. It also has support for monitoring your Bitcoin, Altcoin and Eth addresses meaning it can track the transfers from wallets and it also has a nifty feature of sending out a notification to you when a transaction happens from your wallet. I think that is very handy. The Dashboard Once you have all the integrations set up and imports done you should have dashboard which gives you a overall idea of your portfolio and current holdings. You can also customize your dashboard and choose three different templates for the dashboards as shown in the image. I think we need to have a few more options and we should ideally be able to select each and every widget we want in our dashboard and be able to save it as a new template. But however the current dashboards is good enough and I don’t want to complain :) Timeline is one that caught my attention. It gives you a nice grahical view of important milestones in your journey and gives you a feeling of dejavu. Reports There are various reports provided by Cointracking. I majorly use the following reports. Trade List Use this report to make sure that all your trades are present. Whenever I do a trade I check the next day to make sure that it is there. I am more of a HODLer and hence it is not a problem. Balance by Exchanges This gives you a quick idea of how your stash is distributed across the exchanges. When something is amiss or transactions seem to be missing, this view can give you a quick idea about which trades are missing. Fees This is something that most people miss out. If you are an active trader keep an eye on this as this number can raise quickly and you wouldn’t even notice. Most of the people do the mistake of not considering this when doing their profit/loss calculations. Read this post to know the Irony of trading on Centralised Exchanges Realised Gains If you have bought a stash of a particular coin at low price and have been selling them at every high, it becomes very difficult for you to identify what are you profits over the time. Also at times you will feel like knowing the answer to the question “If I sell the remaining part of my stash will I make a profit, loss or break even”. If you have been in that situation before then the Realised and Unrealised Gains report can give you very good insights. Similarly if you have bought at different prices to average out then this report can give you the average purchase price of a coin. Taxes Yes you will need to pay your taxes on Cryptocurrencies gains. I am not sure if many are thinking about this right now but this can be a Herculean task. Looks like has you covered here as well. With ability to configure various parameters for your tax reports I think this can come handy. Track your cryptocurrency trades and portfolio

Hyperledger Composer architecture Welcome, to part two of the “Choosing private blockchain tech” series ( ). In each article we implement a simple use case to give an overview of what an existing technology does and how it can be useful in businesses. part1 is here Originally, this article was meant to be about Hyperledger Fabric, but after learning about Hyperledger Composer, it became clear that it would be beneficial to write about it first. This will allow us to get a higher-level view of what type of business applications can be built on top of Hyperledger Fabric blockchain and make it easier to understand the purpose of Fabric itself. The business use case Let’s start with the artificially simple use case from the finance industry defined in . Here are the parties in this scenario: part1 makes investment decisions (trades). Non-custodial means they don’t actually hold a client’s money. Instead, after a trade is executed they send directions to a custodian that moves the money appropriately. Non-custodial asset manager (hedge fund): : Usually a large and trusted finance institution that holds a client’s money and executes transfers on behalf of the hedge fund. A custodian needs to know about each trade to distribute payments to counterparties. Custodian : Invests into the hedge fund. Each client needs to view trades in their own account, but not other clients’ accounts. Client(s) Let’s see how we can use Hyperledger Composer to define all participants in this scenario and enable them to share appropriate information. What is Hyperledger Composer? Hyperledger Composer is a higher-level toolset and framework made to quickly build and run applications on top of Hyperledger Fabric blockchain. If Fabric is network-level, Composer is application-level. It allows us to define the data model, business logic and access control lists for an application that can be deployed and executed inside of a . Users of such applications don’t have to run a local node and can interact with a remote node through an RPC or HTTP REST if needed. Fabric channel Composer comes with a nice which allows users to prototype applications in browser without setting up a local network. We’ll use the playground to implement and test our use case. In a future article, we will export the resulting ‘business network definition’ and deploy to a real Hyperledger Fabric blockchain. web playground Solution The full code of the solution can be found . Bellow we’ll see how to configure each piece step-by-step using the . here Composer Playground 1. Create network Select ‘Deploy a new business network’ and fill out the required info. In my case, the name of the network is ‘hedge-fund-network’ and admin card name is admin@hedge-fund-network. Select the ‘empty-business-network’ template and hit Deploy. This will create an empty business network and an admin identity that has full control over it. After the business network is created we can connect to it by pressing ‘Connect Now’. 2. Configure object model Composer has its own object modeling language that is very straightforward and easy to use. There are 4 types of resources that can be defined: . Things that are being tracked in the application. In our case we track Lots — traded blocks of securities. Assets Entities that interact with the network. Each has their own permissions. Participants. are sent to update an asset or a participant as well as to execute a custom-defined logic. Transactions can be emitted from the transaction logic and subscribed to by participants. Events Now, let’s create a model file named ‘org.acme.mynetwork.cto’ and add the following code. the left. Update How to test in Playground Now that we have the complete definition of our application, we can test it using the Composer Playground Test module (click at the top). Test 1. Create participants First, let’s seed our application with some participants. We can create 2 clients: a custodian and a trader. 2. Create identities for each participant In order to be able to interact with the business network a participant needs an associated identity. Identities can be created in the ID registry (open the user dropdown on the top right). We’ll create an identity for each participant by specifying its name and pointing to an instance of the participant created in the previous step. At a minimum, we need 4 identities: 2 clients, 1 trader, and 1 custodian. 3. Login as Trader We can now login using the newly created identities by clicking “Use now” next to each identity in the list. First, we login as a trader and create a new Lot that doesn’t belong to any client (client ID is null). Then, we assign the ownership of this lot to client 1 via a Trade transaction. Now, let’s create one more lot and assign it to client 2 via another Trade. 4. Login as Client Then, we’ll login as client 1 and client 2 to check if we can see our Lots. Client 1 lots Client 2 lots As you can see, each client sees only lots that they have ownership of and they are not aware of trades for other clients. 5. Login as Custodian Let’s login as a custodian to check that we can view all trades. Indeed, both trades are visible, as you can see below. Custodian can also view history of all trades: Note on decentralization Keep in mind that when a transaction is broadcasted to the Hyperledger Fabric network, each configured peer is independently executing the custom transaction processing logic which ensures the correctness of the blockchain update. That’s a major architectural difference and — in many cases — an advantage over the traditional centralized, client-server approach. In the traditional approach a single organization would be responsible for managing the data and exposing it to other participants, forcing others to trust it and making it a potential single point of failure. In the blockchain approach, each peer is responsible for managing and reconciling their own copy of the data. This makes the entire network more resilient and decentralized. However, it is not completely simple to configure. There are additional privacy implications to consider since the data is now hosted in many places which creates a potentially larger threat surface. Conclusion Hopefully this has given you a better understanding of what Hyperledger Composer is and how it can be useful in sharing information and keeping track of assets and other concepts among multiple participants.
