A lot of  women are in this technology because they see the power it has and its ability to transform industries and solve problems. Not being allowed to travel, go to conferences and meet in person has meant that online interaction and communities have become more valuable. I've seen crypto trading groups (women-focused) attract a lot of newbies, and definitely much noisier than they were during the crypto winter, but those building the rails, the founders, the policy-makers, they're shaping the future and are in it for the long haul and our community is largely made up of those women. I would love to say the toxic bro-culture of crypto has disappeared, but there's still an element of that about, and I guess we'll really see when we can go to conferences in person again. Bridget Greenwood May 13, 2021, 6:53 AM Akasha Rose in regards to what can be done more to support women in the emerging tech sector here are some areas: Make the women in your organisations visible, and let them have a platform to share their insights and experience internally and externally. Don't attend a panel if it's a manel (men only) and if you hold panels, make sure you never hold manels. There are female experts in the space, find them. History has a bad habit of writing women, people of colour, LGBTQ out of the history books. Let's make sure we don't continue this Hidden Figures approach. At events make sure there is an inclusion policy and the event works consciously at creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. Women are often a small percentage of attendees, so make sure they can easily connect with one another ( a simple Telegram group for women as they register, or show an interest in the event, so they can connect, ask questions beforehand, and then easily meet up at the event) will go a long way. Work hard on your hiring processes to make sure you use language that is inclusive, there are tools out there to help you with the language. This site is a quick way to check whether a job advert has the kind of subtle linguistic gender-coding that has this discouraging effect. Check out for good examples of how roles are advertised and the information shared about the company as well as the role. People often recruit from their network, so if your network isn't diverse, your recruiting pool won't be, either. If that's the case, find and approach groups and networks that do have access to the female talent, like The Bigger Pie, Women in Blockchain International Impact Group, Women in Blockchain, Ada's List etc. If you hire for diversity but don't have an inclusive culture, your talent won't stay. Work on your culture. Make sure you don't fall foul of the gender pay gap. Have parental leave policies. The pandemic has been very damaging in a multitude of ways, but remote and flexible working has been forced upon us all, let this be something we foster and embrace. Focusing on hiring the best talent, not the talent closest to our offices, and working in time frames that allow great work to be delivered, and life to be better managed. A poor work-life balance is a major reason women leave tech. Learn how to be a good ally to women, call out bad behaviour when you see it. Give women a voice and listen to them, it's amazing the value you'll discover. Being inclusive in one area will allow you to open up a culture to inclusivity across the spectrum. This will foster a psychologically safe space for your team, and that's where creativity, innovation and magic happens. We need to see more female-led startups get the funding they need. Women get just 2.3% of global VC funding, down from 2.9% pre-pandemic. Having female-led companies does wonders for gender inclusion across senior positions and provides role models for the pipeline of up and coming talent. Above all, truly understand why diversity and inclusion is something worth doing & how having more experiences at the design, development and deployment tables will help you to shape better solutions for your customers, foster more engaged communities, create more innovation & drive more revenue and increase profits. What can companies do to help even out the playing field?" See above. We must remember also that it's not a case of fixing the women. There's an often quoted statistic that a woman won't apply for a job unless she ticks all of the required skills and experience (or at least 80% of them) and that a man will apply if they have just 20%, or in another way, a man will apply for a role 2 years before they're ready for it and a woman 2 years after they're ready. Imagine 4 years in emerging tech, what gets built in that time. So make sure you use language that is inviting for these people. As Keir Finlow-Bates said, if you have a cv that's exactly the same, but one is from a man and the other a woman. It's most likely the man has fallen into his career choice and path, but a woman has actively chosen hers and overcomes challenges that the man didn't have to. Based on that assumption, who would you prefer to hire? If the boy's network is still the best way to hear about roles, and get your foot in the door, then actively work to create inclusive networks. Actively go out to the networks where female talent are comfortable and hang out and become allies. Mentor women. Advocate for women. Recommend women. Create opportunities for women to connect with peers at the work place. If you don't have women, or only one or two women in your firm, reach out to other companies and communities for these women to have a number of ways to feel supported and part of a more gender balanced ecosystem, at least until such time as your company has that internally. Having a marketing strategy sounds like something basic that all companies should have. Yet, several don’t because they believe that marketing activities are the strategy. Engaging in marketing activities is not the same as having a comprehensive marketing plan. If there is no strategy directing tactics, then they are just random acts of marketing that cost precious resources and don’t drive long-term results. Without a solid foundation to build off of, companies often make even worse decisions later to try and make up for it. It's quite simple: . At tech start-ups, in particular, limited resources are usually first put into the product or engineering leaving marketing with what feels like few choices. That doesn’t mean that the company should be random in its marketing. Many start-ups face major growth challenges such as plateauing new user sign-ups and/or revenue. When working with limited resources, it is essential to learn and practice the most efficient and cost-effective way to grow the company. avoid building a marketing strategy now and end up in a precarious situation later In this article, I will go over some important considerations in building a marketing strategy and the nuances of a developer marketing strategy for software platforms. What is a “random act of marketing”? In the words of Karen Hayward, from her book “ ”, growth will not occur by implementing a slew of random activities. Stop Random Acts of Marketing: Deliberate and Practical Growth Strategies for Mid-Market CEOs Anything random is: Made, done, happening, or chosen without method or conscious decision. Lacking a definite plan, purpose, or pattern. Without definite aim, direction rule or method. Note: I recommend this book to any marketer despite its title targeting mid-market CEOs. Once you have a plan, then tactical execution has a direction and a purpose. It seems odd that any CEO of a start-up would expect to go from zero customers to enough to provide a solid stream of revenue, without a plan. Yet, I’ve seen the mentality “if you build it, they will come” which prevents strategy building from taking place. If you have a new software platform that you want developers to use, you can’t expect them to use it just because it's “good”. A user base won’t appear out of thin air. If you want sustainable growth, you need a plan. Many companies believe that they can solve growth problems by allocating their limited resources to ads or agencies. Regardless of what the marketing budget is, it doesn’t make sense to spend it on ads without having a plan for them. Ads aren’t guaranteed to produce long-term results and don’t work when the strategy hasn’t addressed brand awareness, recognition and credibility first. Monetization The business model of a public blockchain classifieds board will need to be different from that of Ebay and company. First, there is the decentralization angle. Existing platforms need to maintain their own servers. A decentralized platform is maintained by its users, so the cost of running the core platform drops to zero for the platform owner. Then there is the front end, the website or interface that gives access to the platform. Here there are many options. The platform owners can restrict access and force everyone to use their interface, charging a fee. The platform owners can also decide to open access (Power to the People!) and let anyone build interfaces to the platform. Or the owners could decide any approach in the middle of those extremes. Business leaders with more vision than I will know how to monetize this. All I see is that this is different from the status quo and probably profitable. Furthermore, there is the automation and payments angle. Some things can be very and traded in a classifieds board. Tokenized assets are easily transferred in a blockchain. Highly complex payment methods can be easily implemented in a blockchain. effectively tokenized I’m just smelling a business opportunity here. A classifieds board with no running costs can easily be implemented, with complex payment paths included in each transaction. I’m sure someone will come up with an idea about what to use this for. After selling his previous company for over $900 million, David Karandish is now building Jane.ai, an AI-native knowledge management platform to make company intelligence accessible in the simplest way possible What’s your background, and what are you working on? I’m David Karandish — CEO of , an enterprise artificial intelligence software company. We’re building an AI-native knowledge management platform to make all company intelligence accessible in the simplest possible way — via natural language. Before founding Jane.ai, I was the CEO of Answers Corporation. My business partner Chris Sims and I started the parent company of Answers in 2006 and sold the company to a private equity firm in 2014 for north of $900 million. Jane.ai I received a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a second major in entrepreneurship from Washington University in St. Louis. I live in STL with my wife and our 3 daughters, 1 son, and zero cats. What does your company do, and who uses it? Jane makes company information accessible by integrating with apps, mining intel from docs, and learning tacit knowledge — giving team members instant access to all the information they need to excel in their work. Jane is unique because it is used by an entire team to gain near instant access to the information they need. We have customers in verticals such as financial services and education, and departments like HR and IT. In the last two years, we’ve had hundreds of thousands of questions go through our system. We started with 6 people on January 1, 2017, and now have around 60 team members — and we’re still hiring! What motivated you to get started with your company? I came up with the idea for Jane because I was tired of how many emails I had to send or people I had to ask to get even a simple piece of information like, “When did we last adjust a team member’s compensation?” I was frustrated that Netflix knew more about my preferences than the software we used at work. I knew there had to be a better way. I saw the rise of platforms like Siri and Alexa in the consumer space and suspected that a similar concept could succeed in the workplace. When we started the company, our goal was to sign our first paying client within 6 months — or pull the plug and move onto the next idea. We ended up signing our first client at month 5, day 30. I’m of the belief that if you can convince people to engage in the unnatural act of opening up their wallet and paying you for your service, then that’s a good gauge for validation. After a successful exit from Answers.com, I had a never-ending list of ideas I wanted to pursue. Starting Jane.ai was the one idea that I knew I’d always regret if I didn’t try. Before launching Jane, I had worked in the tech sector for over 17 years, in SaaS and online advertising and got to dust off my CS degree. If Jane.ai hadn’t succeeded, my next idea was a fast-casual Indian food restaurant. Maybe for another day… What went into building the initial product? Initially, we built a prototype. The first version of Jane existed as a chatbot within Slack. You ask Jane a question, she comes back to you with an answer. We then started adding app integrations — weather, email, maps — the most commonly used services. From there, we started grouping the sources of all company intelligence into three buckets: apps, documents and people. For apps, we built more integrations, an internal API and are now developing an external dev platform for clients to build apps on top of Jane. With documents, we’ve developed some tech to read the contents of a document and add it to our knowledge base. Our knowledge base has been our breakout hit — storing the information in an organization that doesn’t have a home in either apps or documents. All of this required us putting together a stellar development team. Specifically, a team that can balance both speed and scale. We bootstrapped the company to get started. We subsequently raised a Series A round and are wrapping up our Series B. The company is about 2 ½ years old today. How have you attracted users and grown your company? To date, we’ve taken a syncretic approach to customer acquisition. Initially, we started out on the “friends and family” plan, meeting with a lot of companies through the YPO (Young Presidents Organization) Network. We then began building out a geographically distributed sales team and a centralized marketing team. Within marketing, we split between “analog” or traditional marketing (events, trade shows, PR, etc.) and “digital” (SEO, LinkedIn, Email, etc.). We are now adding a third angle with a newly formed strategic partnerships group within the company. What’s fascinating is the power of these channels working together. Someone may have seen a LinkedIn video, read an email and attended a tradeshow before getting the full demo experience. These channels continue to build off of one another and multiply their effectiveness. What’s your business model, and how have you grown your revenue? Our business model is Software as a Service with the majority of our clients on multi-year contracts. It sounds intuitive, but our revenue growth is directly tied to our ability to get qualified leads and demonstrate our product in action. My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs on this point would be to focus on your target customer and what the characteristics of that customer are. What are your goals for the future? Our mission is to help teams do their best work. We believe we can accomplish our mission by being the AI-native knowledge management platform for enterprise companies. The way we get there is by building the best product for our customers that meets their needs — being customer-centric is key to how we are building the company. What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced and obstacles you’ve overcome? If you had to start over, what would you do differently? If I had a Delorean and could go back in time, I would tell my 2017 self that enterprise companies haven’t adopted chat platforms (e.g., Slack, Skype) at the same rate that small and midmarket companies have. Therefore, in the enterprise, it’s important to give our users multiple modalities of accessing their knowledge. yet Have you found anything particularly helpful or advantageous? At my previous job, my inbox was bursting at the seams and I would be getting pinged every couple of minutes, making it impossible to focus during work or relax outside of work. So, I started practicing an “email Sabbath.” Once a week, usually from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon, I don’t check my email (or Slack). I give myself 24 hours where I can unplug and be refreshed. It’s a wonderful time to connect with family, read a book, take a nap, get some fresh air — whatever, as long as it’s rejuvenating and will get me centered for the week ahead. Unlike the traditional market, Crypto is the wild wild west of all trading assets. There is no denying the market are highly manipulated. A few Whales can create a wave and take all for a ride. So what can you do about it? Join the whales? Do you have that much money or will they trust you to inform you when and which coin they are planning to pump? How can you trust someone else with your hard earn money? The solution! Ignore the noise and focus on the price. There is a little known fact about tsunamis. Before a tsunami comes and floods the beach and the inland, the beach water level first starts to . reside If you can be informed when the beach water is residing abnormally that's your early sign for the coming tsunami. The reason I compare tsunami with crypto pump is that there is always some sign that all pump indicate. The question is to find those indicators and then tracking those indicators to know when the pump tsunami is coming. For the first part, Volume always precedes Price, Always with a capital “A” Price need the buyers to rise, buyers need sellers to buy from, Seller needs a better price for their asset hence they increase the price, …. story repeats itself till the end of the price pump. The reason volume is especially high when a pump is about to happen is because the buyer is buying at whatever price the market as to offer. Once all coin from one price is sold the buyer start buying the next price level. Whats make Volume critical is the rate of volume increase in a lower time frame like 5 Minutes or 30 Minutes candle. Second part, Price change, more precisely the rate of change of price is very important to understand. 1% change is 1 Day nothing much, 1% change in 1 Hour might be interesting 1% change in 1 Minute is abnormal Enough of texts, let me show you some examples The price increase following the Volume increase. The above example is DOCK/USDT, where the volume jumps almost 20X in just 2 candles of 30 Minutes. These were a pump created or nature but the volume and price are facts. 9X Volume followed by 30% Price increase Another example of LEND/BTC shows the same abnormal volume increase followed by price jump. You can do it your self, just go to Binance or any exchange and see the coin with the most price increase. Just go to the 30 Minute and 5 Minute candle chart and you will notice a huge Volume spike before the price started to jump. The big question is how do I know when this happens, I and you can’t sit and monitor every coin out there every 5 or 30 minutes for 24/7.
