Meet the Writer series So let’s start! Tell us a bit about yourself. For example, name, profession, and personal interests. Well, firstly, thank you for taking the time to feature me. I’ve been an avid reader of Hackernoon for some time now, and to graduate from writing articles to being interviewed is an absolute honor. My name… Scott D. Clary, adding the D because you can find me on social that way, and I don’t need to compete with the Olympic Swimmer Scott Clary. I’m a career sales and marketing exec. I’ve worked with large Fortune 500, early-stage startups, and everything in between. In my spare time, I write (duh), both for publications (like Hackernoon) and for my own newsletter, ROI Overload as well as host a podcast (Success Story), that’s part of the HubSpot Podcast Network. Basically, I create content, on any medium possible, that focuses on sales, marketing, business, startups and entrepreneurship. In my most recent 9-5, I worked as CRO at ExciteM, an early=stage startup focused on SaaS broadcast tech, which was recently acquired by Grass Valley. Interesting! What was your latest Hackernoon Top story about? My latest Hackernoon top story was about OnePlus, a startup that grew to compete with Samsung and Apple through product-focused growth, commitment to customers and a variety of highly effective, creative marketing strategies. I broke down their growth story and strategy that helped them gain traction against behemoths like Samsung and Apple. Do you usually write on similar topics? If not, what do you usually write about? I do usually write about similar topics. I love unpacking the stories, playbooks and strategies of high-growth companies that have “made it”. For me, a quick shortcut to career (or startup) success is learning from people who have done it before. When you look at the strategies of companies who have done it before, you can really expedite your learnings and hopefully increase the likelihood of trying and implementing things that have been proven to work before. Because I am an operator and work in companies that are trying to market, sell, scale and grow, I respect how hard it can be for someone trying to navigate all the different things you can potentially do to try and be successful at selling, building, scaling or growing whatever your widget, product, service or software is, so I try and make business a little “simpler” through the case studies I put together Great! What is your usual writing routine like (if you have one?) I do a lot, so for me, I need to time block and focus. If I don’t set time aside to research and write, I’ll get distracted by emails, calls, family, errands and everything else under the sun. This means that every Sunday I shut myself off from everything in the morning or afternoon and research and write. I spend about 4-6 hours total between researching and writing, completely devoid of all distractions (really trying to achieve flow state), and then I have a finished piece which I submit to Hackernoon, and also use as a script for a podcast episode, YouTube video and to act as a case study I can include in my weekly newsletter. Being a writer in tech can be a challenge. It’s not often our main role, but an addition to another one. What is the biggest challenge you have when it comes to writing? The biggest challenge I have with writing now is committing to doing it and time blocking time in my week to getting it done. It used to be the creativity required for writing, but I’ve learned that if you have a creativity problem, simply write more. When you sit down and do not let yourself get up until you’re finished writing, you’ll be shocked at how creative you get. So to get over any creativity issues aka writers block, force yourself to sit down and not allow yourself to get up or get distracted or check your phone until you have written. The first few drafts will be subpar, but after writing out all the bad ideas, you’ll stumble upon the good ideas, and then everything else will start to flow. What is the next thing you hope to achieve in your career? After my latest exit, I would like to grow my own personal brand and double down on growing my audience, newsletter subscriber base and podcast audience. I’ll always enjoy working as a growth operator in some capacity in high growth tech companies, however, I am a firm believer in the power of your personal brand, building an audience or tribe and doubling down on investing in your own name. I never want to stop helping companies scale, but as I have more career successes (exits and acquisitions), building a strong personal brand will only compliment whatever projects I want to take on or companies I want to align with. Wow, that’s admirable. Now, something more casual: What is your guilty pleasure of choice? I don’t know which direction I should take this, but I’ll go with the first thing that pops up in my mind. Pizza. I mean, it’s not the worst thing in the world, but after being locked down for 2 years, and not moving around that much… it definitely has its negatives when you enjoy it too much, Do you have a non-tech-related hobby? If yes, what is it? Most of my non-tech hobbies are sports hobbies. Like tooooons of sales people I know, (I’m not sure why this seems to be a trend), I played every sport under the sun growing up. Hockey, tennis, rugby, football, soccer, etc. Now, my non-tech hobbies involve playing some sort of sport (hockey is preferred),  going to the gym, or just being active in some way, shape or form. I’ve found that having some type of daily activity is the single most important hack to maintain energy levels, creativity, and mood when working hard at work, on a side hustle in an isolated, remote environment. What can the Hacker Noon community expect to read from you next? I haven’t decided what companies I’ll cover next. I usually start down the rabbit hole when researching my next company growth story / case study, by reading a founders’ origin story. If it piques my interest, and it’s a company that has achieved some measure of relative success, I’ll dive into the strategy they’ve used to grow and hopefully pull out some useful insights and actionable tactics for readers! Many people who I speak with about writing say that they don’t want to write, or that they aren’t great writers, or that they always run into writer’s block. I may not be Seth Godin, but I do know that whatever writing talent I’ve accrued over my career is only because I’ve practiced again, and again and again. It’s as simple as that. There is really no trick to writing better (of course there are courses you can take), but even if you take a course to expedite the learning process, there will never be a supplement for practice. And to quote Seth Godin, “People with writer’s block don’t have a problem typing. They have a problem living with bad writing, imperfect writing, writing that might expose something that they fear.”. So get out of your own head, realize everyone starts from level one, and just start writing.

He walked past Ryan’s car parked at the curb and turned towards the school’s entrance. He didn’t notice Jay, rolled-up uniform under his arm, exit the bus. “Nick,” Jay called after him. “Wait up.” Turning to Jay, Nick noticed Ryan and his friends climb out of the Cadillac, but otherwise paid them no mind. He raised the six-pack to show it off. “Hey, buddy. Thanks again for doing this.” They continued towards the entrance, when a hand landed on Jay’s shoulder and pulled him around. “Jay the rat,” Ryan sneered. “Payment time.” Bobby stepped in front of Nick as Ryan, Steve and Dave surround Jay. Ryan jabbed his finger in Jay’s chest. “Did you think I wouldn’t know it was you?” Jay held his ground. “What are you talking about?” Ryan shoved Jay hard, sending him into Steve, who pushed Jay back within reach of Ryan. “Hey,” Nick shouted. “Leave him alone.” Ryan glanced at Nick, but it is Bobby who responded. Bobby used his bulk to push Nick away. “Beat it.” Over Bobby’s shoulder, Nick repeated, “Let him be.” Bobby lunged at Nick, but Nick was quicker. He sprinted to the school entrance. Ryan shoved Jay a second time. “You ratted me out to Thurro. You cost me my job. So now you pay.” Steve and Dave each grabbed an arm; the uniform slipped to the sidewalk. “It wasn’t me.” Ryan delivered a solid punch to Jay’s stomach that would have felled him had he not been supported by Ryan’s friends. Jay’s chin dropped, but Ryan jerked it upwards so he could watch Jay’s eyes. “Jay, Jay. None of those women would have talked. They are happy to pay me to keep their jobs. No, it could only be you.” The sound of a door opening behind them went unnoticed. A teacher followed Nick out of the school. “Jay,” the teacher said, “You’re late. Get in here.” The Messketeers stepped away. Suddenly free, Jay picked up his uniform and jogged into the building. Bobby, Dave and Steve drifted back towards the car. Ryan and Nick made eye contact; Nick looked away first. 60:57:14 There was no sign of Jay as Nick handed his ticket to the teacher, seated once again at the table set across the gym doors decorated in tissue garlands in the school colours and rattling to the baseline of a dance tune. The teacher pulled the six-pack to his side of the table. “There’s punch inside.” “Just trying to avoid the family curse. Diabetes.” The teacher leaned down to gauge the fill levels. “Students have been known to sneak booze inside pop bottles.” Deadpan, Nick said, “Never occurred to me.” Without looking, the teacher selected a bottle, then paused to look at Nick. “So if I twist a cap?” They both heard the distinctive ’crack’ from the seal when a fresh bottle is opened. The teacher re-tightened the cap and pushed the six-pack over to Nick. “Enjoy.” Nick halted just inside the gym entrance, acclimating to the pulsing lights and the music volume. He ignored the crowded dance floor as he searched for Becky. Barry appeared next to him. “Finally. Is that it? How’d you get it through?” “Paperclip. Let’s do this.” Barry led Nick around the perimeter of the dance floor and past the tables spaced around the room, pointing out those waiting for their vodka. Those at the first table cheered as Nick walked up, making him cringe and look around to see if anyone noticed. Sitting quickly, he peeled a bottle from the rest and passed it over. He waited, smiling through the brief confusion caused by the snapping seal. Then he saw Becky standing by some folded bleachers, dancing in place as she sipped a paper cup of punch. She was looking at him. He peeled a second bottle from the harness and handed the rest to Barry. “Can you hand the rest of these out?” Barry scuttled off, leaving Nick to muster his courage. He walked over to Becky. “Hi, Becky. I didn’t expect to see you alone tonight.” Becky’s lips twisted. “Don’t ruin the night by mentioning Ryan,” she said. “He refused to come in to the dance, but he’ll pick me up when it’s over.” “Well, then. Can I spike your punch?” “With diet ginger ale?” Nick raised the bottle. “Vodka.” She held her cup out and he poured a generous measure. “Am I drinking alone?” She asked. “Be right back.” She watched as Nick nearly ran for his punch, saw him spill a good portion of it as he negotiated the crowd, and laughed when he stopped and considered returning to refill it, then dismissing the thought. He added vodka to his drink and rested the bottle on the bleacher. 60:42:57 Ryan braked late at a red light, terrifying a pair of elderly ladies crossing the street. A lone car approached from the opposite direction. When his laugh at the women’s terror subsided, he hit the steering wheel with his palm. “Well this is boring. We need to think of something epic.” Nervous laughter emanated from the back seat. Bobby pointed out the windshield. “Careful, Ryan. That’s a cop.” Ryan wasn’t listening. As soon as the light changed, the Cadillac leapt into motion. “We need somewhere I can try out the sports package without getting hassled. And I know just the place.” Steve’s head popped over the seat back. “Can we stop for beer first?” 59:57:31 The dance seemed louder, more raucous, forcing Nick and Becky to stand closer together. The bottle on the bleacher was more than half empty. He leaned closer still. “Break up with him, then.” She turned her face to answer him and found he was close enough that if either stretched even a little, they would kiss. She wondered what it would be like. “If I leave Ryan, my mother will suffer for it.” The song changed. “I love this tune,” Becky said. She reached for Nick’s hand and tugged him towards the dance floor. Nick took a last gulp of his drink and allowed himself to be lead into the throng of dancers. 59:56:14 “Woooooo-hoooooo!” Ryan wrenched the steering wheel hard to the left, sending the car into a dizzying spin. The others held on to whatever was handy to counter the G-forces and not spill their beers. Night was imminent, yet the stands of State University’s stadium were still visible in shades of shadow, dark at ground level but less so as the rows of chairs climbed towards the press boxes and alumni VIP suites. Ryan’s car slid to a stop at the 20-yard line, the end of a long spiral furrow cut into the manicured field. Others criss-crossed the grass. Ryan looked across the ruined field, gauging his handiwork, and nodded. “I didn’t deserve to lose my scholarship.” He drained his beer and tossed the bottle out the window. “Enough play. Let’s get Becky home then deal with Jay.” Shoving the gear shift into first, he planted the accelerator and dropped the clutch. The car lurched forward, tires throwing up clumps of turf. The Last 3 Days (06): The Value of Paperclips

If you are applying or have ever applied for a role in cybersecurity, you will easily agree that the experience has similarities to the 8th task of Asterix in ''The Twelve Tasks of Asterix'' movie by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. For those that haven’t seen the movie, in that particular task, Asterix and Obelix must obtain a particular permit from a very bureaucratic organisation only to discover that they will keep being redirected for other permits, as pre-requirements, for the one they really need, over, and over, and over, and over. One will not do! They will need many! (But in the end, they needed none) In cybersecurity, job candidates are expected to have certain well known certifications. This excludes most academic education (say what!). Without those certifications, applicants will be frowned upon and seen as if they would not be able to appreciate or understand what is communicated, the hardship involved or the level of details required to survive yet alone assist someone else in their survival. That of course will change once they obtain A, B and C certifications, or A38 for that matter…  most likely the same as those the hiring manager holds… as if only then, shall the candidate be able to see the world as it really is! Or at least as they think it is, or the one they are familiar with. Without A38, Asterix will not be called for an interview! Artificial Intelligence Yes, no interviews! Be it because an AI won’t find A38 while CV scanning and reject the application, or if the gatekeeper is a human recruiter, he or she not having the required knowledge as to infer if the job requirements could otherwise be met. As such, your CV will make the pile of those not suitable and you will get no rejection email, as if you are not worthy of the time spent sending it. Let’s look at another category, literature, which presumably ChatGPT should be good at because there should be plenty of text and references to learn about the literature. The implication there for the greater knowledge base of ChatGPT is that you could influence what it deems to be true if there’s enough of an *opinion* in its training data. Wrapping Up Like I said, there are almost 50,000 questions. Digging into each and every single one of them is not practical for a single post, but it is really interesting to try to intuit why ChatGPT is better or worse in various categories. In categories like brain-teasers, there’s much more logic than needs to be applied and combined to answer some of the questions. In other low-scoring categories like television and video games, my guess is that because the content itself is not in an indexable/consumable format, ChatGPT doesn’t have as much information about it. ChatGPT hasn’t played the games themselves or watched the television shows. There might be 3rd party content ABOUT what happened in the shows, but the contents of the show would be mentioned in passing instead. In high-scoring categories, the categories all tend to be for contents that have been documented in text long before we had audio, video, etc. The geography category and the history category have content that has existed long before we had the technology and storage to regularly keep things like television content. All that being said, 66% correctness is still pretty impressive given such a vast selection of topics. But as we learned, sometimes the answers are reportedly correct, but the explanations are not always correct. I don’t think ChatGPT or any large language model that we have right now is the strong AI or general AI that some articles want you to believe it is.
