There's no sense in holding a live man's head in the fire—why, he'd scream the house down." "Ah!" said Poirot in a low voice. "Fool that I have been. Triple imbecile! You are a cleverer man than I am, Japp." Japp was rather taken aback by the compliment—Poirot being usually given to exclusive self praise. He reddened and muttered something about there being a lot of doubt about that. He led the way through the house to the room where the tragedy had occurred—Mr. Paynter's study. It was a wide, low room, with book-lined walls and big leather arm-chairs. Poirot looked across at once to the window which gave upon a gravelled terrace. "The window, it was unlatched?" he asked. "That's the whole point, of course. When the doctor left this room, he merely closed the door behind him. The next morning it was found locked. Who locked it? Mr. Paynter? Ah Ling declares that the window was closed and bolted. Dr. Quentin, on the other hand, has an impression that it was closed, but not fastened, but he won't swear either way. If he could, it would make a great difference. If the man was murdered, some one entered the room either through the door or the window—if through the door, it was an inside job; if through the window, it might have been any one. First thing when they had broken the door down, they flung the window open, and the housemaid who did it thinks that it wasn't fastened, but she's a precious bad witness—will remember anything you ask her to!" "What about the key?" "There you are again. It was on the floor among the wreckage of the door. Might have fallen from the keyhole, might have been dropped there by one of the people who entered, might have been slipped underneath the door from the outside." "In fact everything is 'might have been'?" "You've hit it, Moosior Poirot. That's just what it is." Poirot was looking round him, frowning unhappily. "I cannot see light," he murmured. Young Paynter and I have searched high and low, but can't find a trace of it—he must have hidden it away somewhere." Poirot's eyes were shining with the green light I knew so well. "How was it called, this book?" he asked. "The Hidden Hand in China, I think it was called." "Aha!" said Poirot, with almost a gasp. Then he said quickly, "Let me see the Chinaman, Ah Ling." The Chinaman was sent for and appeared, shuffling along, with his eyes cast down, and his pigtail swinging. His impassive face showed no trace of any kind of emotion. "Ah Ling," said Poirot, "are you sorry your master is dead?" "I welly sorry. He good master." "You know who kill him?" "I not know. I tell pleeceman if I know." The questions and answers went on. With the same impassive face, Ah Ling described how he had made the curry. The cook had had nothing to do with it, he declared, no hand had touched it but his own. I wondered if he saw where his admission was leading him. He stuck to it too, that the window to the garden was bolted that evening. If it was open in the morning, his master must have opened it himself. At last Poirot dismissed him. "That will do, Ah Ling." Just as the Chinaman had got to the door, Poirot recalled him. "And you know nothing, you say, of the Yellow Jasmine?" "No, what should I know?" "Nor yet of the sign that was written underneath it?" Poirot leant forward as he spoke, and quickly traced something on the dust of a little table. I was near enough to see it before he rubbed it out. A down stroke, a line at right angles, and then a second line down which completed a big 4. The effect on the Chinaman was electrical. For one moment his face was a mask of terror. Then, as suddenly, it was impassive again, and repeating his grave disclaimer, he withdrew. Japp departed in search of young Paynter, and Poirot and I were left alone together. "The Big Four, Hastings," cried Poirot. "Once again, the Big Four. Paynter was a great traveller. In his book there was doubtless some vital information concerning the doings of Number One, Li Chang Yen, the head and brains of the Big Four." "But who—how—" "Hush, here they come." Gerald Paynter was an amiable, rather weak-looking young man. He had a soft brown beard, and a peculiar flowing tie. He answered Poirot's questions readily enough. "I dined out with some neighbours of ours, the Wycherlys," he explained. "What time did I get home? Oh, about eleven. I had a latch-key, you know. All the servants had gone to bed, and I naturally thought my uncle had done the same. As a matter of fact, I did think I caught sight of that soft-footed Chinese beggar Ah Ling just whisking round the corner of the hall, but I fancy I was mistaken." "When did you last see your uncle, Mr. Paynter? I mean before you came to live with him." "Oh! not since I was a kid of ten. He and his brother (my father) quarrelled, you know." "But he found you again with very little trouble, did he not? In spite of all the years that had passed?" "Yes, it was quite a bit of luck my seeing the lawyer's advertisement." Poirot asked no more questions. Our next move was to visit Dr. Quentin. His story was substantially the same as he had told at the inquest, and he had little to add to it. He received us in his surgery, having just come to the end of his consulting patients. He seemed an intelligent man. A certain primness of manner went well with his pince-nez, but I fancied that he would be thoroughly modern in his methods. "I wish I could remember about the window," he said frankly. "But it's dangerous to think back, one becomes quite positive about something that never existed. That's psychology, isn't it, M. Poirot? You see, I've read all about your methods, and I may say I'm an enormous admirer of yours. No, I suppose it's pretty certain that the Chinaman put the powdered opium in the curry, but he'll never admit it, and we shall never know why. But holding a man down in a fire—that's not in keeping with our Chinese friend's character, it seems to me." I commented on this last point to Poirot as we walked down the main street of Market Handford. "Do you think he let a confederate in?" I asked. Someone commented on LinkedIn that the next big thing web3 startups need to focus on is creating a “ ” and it just triggered me the wrong way. minimum viable community I keep seeing people using this word like a child uttering a swear word for the first time and the parents hastily trying to stop it. Only their behavior delights the sprog and so they repeat it over and over, getting louder and louder, all the while everyone around them standing laughing as the parents crawl into a hole and die. Community the condition of sharing or having certain attitudes and interests in common. Customer a person who buys goods or services from a shop or business. Fandom the fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, etc. regarded collectively as a community or subculture. Cult a person or thing that is popular or fashionable among a particular group or section of society. I covered some of this before in but it’s clear it needs fucking repeating. Chapter 3 Definition — Community: a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. Or if you want to break it down, “a group of people living in the same place [echo chamber] or having a particular characteristic in common [being completely fucking gullible]”. I don’t understand posts that claim community, collaboration and co-opetition didn’t exist before web3. They have nothing to do with technology and everything to do with strategy and people. They existed, they always have. You are a customer of Starbucks. You don’t belong to a community. You don’t care about anyone else in that store when you order a latte. You are a customer of Mcdonald’s. You don’t belong to a community. You don’t care about anyone else in that restaurant when you order that burger. You can’t even call yourselves fans. Consumers don’t think how they feel. They don’t say what they think and they don’t do what they say.” — David Ogilvy In these examples, there’s a killer point that I don’t think a lot appreciate — habit. Habits drive a lot more behavior than people realize. When they see others form a habit it encourages a network effect. There’s also one more — blanket coverage. McDonald's and Starbucks are everywhere. There are hundreds of variations of Colgate toothpaste that are all the same just with different packaging and it’s a tactic to shut out other brands from being front of mind. You’re therefore being conditioned to form a habit around a choice you no longer have the freedom to make. You are just a customer with a habit you didn’t ask for. You’re not part of a community. You’re not part of a fandom. But you could argue that the conditioning you’ve experienced is nothing less than cult-like. Sounds a lot like the fever surrounding Bored Apes and Axie Infinity to me. Steve Jobs didn’t famously say “ ” for example and for good reason which I’ll explain below. So many investors have fallen foul of this community phenomenon by using it as a yardstick for the quality of the project. Morons. start with the community and work backward to the technology Let me regale you a tale of yore, precisely 20 years ago in fact. I owned a slightly modded Subaru Impreza Turbo. They were great cars, and it was in Sonic Blue, the same color as the UK P1 variant. I joined , a BBS forum for owners of all things Subaru, and set about learning everything I could about the cars, modifications, etc. Scoobynet I spent hours talking to people from all over the world. I bought secondhand parts from some to modify the car further. I posted about spotting other Scooby’s on the road so I could connect to them and say ‘hi’. We flashed our headlights at each other when we passed one another. We met up in groups and, well, just talked and had fun. Even when I had surgery for a back problem I loaned the car out to one of them whom I’d never met in real life to basically keep the car running tip-top instead of seizing up on the driveway. This is what a group of passionately random people do when they congregate over something they share a love for. Yes, it all sounds incredibly sad but this is community. We’ve existed for some time, odd that. Even in the games industry, as toxic as it can get, there are players who form genuine communities and bonds to the point they become lifelong friends. Harley Davidson is another such example where you don’t just own a product, you become part of one of the planet’s biggest communities much in the same way I did with my Subaru. And when one of them dies they mourn. And they all mourn collectively. You should be lucky to experience hundreds of Harleys thundering down the street to pay their last respects, tens of modified Subarus with that exhaust burble, or hundreds of players who log on and all travel to one location in the game to share their memories of a friend. They all make the headlines. Now let’s turn our attention to what Web3 is about and all this bullshit about community. Because it’s not community. It’s a cult. It’s easy to confuse the two, you’re sharing common interests but at the moment the difference is pretty obvious — web3 and everything it brings to the table is just fashionable for a lot of people without any real connection. You can tell instantly who is really a part of a community or just part of a cult every time to log into a Discord server. The talk is never about sharing personal stories or genuinely being interested in what’s going on with others — it’s about when the next NFT drop is, how best to pump the token, or how to create a pyramid scheme to make money from the next poor sap who can’t afford the buy-in. Owning a Discord server or a bunch of Twitter bots does not equate to a community, and yet so many naive investors fall for this trick. A community actively adds value to whatever it’s attached to, like a community of developers working on an open-source project to improve the software. How many so-called communities are actually just filled with passive lurkers who live vicariously through the actions of others? They cheer from the sidelines but never actively take part or have even bought into the service or project they’re fervently passionate about. Again, how many investors so desperate to have a windfall in Web3 have fallen for this as proof of market validation? How many hodlers will turn up at the funeral of Ape#34574.5 I wonder…fuck all is the most likely answer. Who’s going to care if Moonbird #2342 fell off her bike and broke her back? “Hey everyone, doctors think I’ll never walk again.” WAGMI! People in Web3 are almost like a new segmentation, they sit between being a customer and being the product. They are a byproduct of being part of a cult with the delusion of being a community. It’s not the minimum viable community you’re creating, it’s a minimum viable cult. And you can buy them cheap because a community will stick by you, cults just migrate from one fashionable lure to another for the promise of something better than the last. I’m being harsh of course but for good reason. You can’t even claim to be part of fandom for example because you pump and dump so fast you don’t even care whether a project lives or dies, or care enough to still be a fan years later and admit it. How many of us are still fans of defunct TV shows that passed into shadow long ago but we still talk about them, defend them, and yearn for just one more season or a reboot? ( ) yeah, I’m talking about Firefly lol How many of you will still talk about Mfers or some other shitty PFP project in 5 years time when it inevitably goes tits up and is worthless? “In 1.0, your community is IRL and based on things like where you were born, where you went to school, what sports team you supported, etc. In 2.0, your community was a URL, where you joined interest-based online groups across Facebook, Reddit, Discord, etc. In 3.0, the community is all about ownership. Being part of a community means you’re providing funding to run the community and gaining transparency and voting power.” Do you hear yourselves when you say this out loud? Do you think Starbucks is going to invite you to the next investors' call and ask your opinion just because you joined their new NFT rewards program? And do you finally recognize that Web2 brands using pseudo-web3 principles and technologies are still Web2?! Or are you all part of a cult that’s brainwashed you into thinking you’re really part of a community only to abandon you as soon as the grass turns a different shade of green on that next plot of land in The Sandbox? He was a very special kind of boy, forever at his book, and he happened once to get to the very tip top of his class. His mother was told of it, and when it came morning, she got up early and went to speak with the cook as follows: “Cook, you are to make a cake for Henry, who has been very good at school.” “With all my heart,” said the cook, and she made a cake. It was as big as—let me see—as big as the moon. It was stuffed with nuts, and raisins, and figs, and candied fruit peel, and over it all was an icing of sugar, thick, and smooth, and very white. And no sooner was the cake home from the baking than the cook put on her bonnet and carried it to the school. When Henry first saw it, he jumped up and down. He was not patient enough to wait for a knife, but he fell upon the cake tooth and nail. He ate and ate until school began, and after school was over he ate again with his might and main. At night he ate until bedtime, and he put the cake under his bolster when he went to bed and he waked and waked a dozen times that he might take a bite. But the next day when the dinner bell rang, Henry was not hungry, and was vexed to see how heartily the other children ate. His friends asked him if he would not play at cricket, tan, or kits. Ah! Henry could not; so they played without him, and Henry could scarcely stand upon his legs. He went and sat down in a corner, and the head master sent for the apothecary to come with all his phials of physic. After some days Henry was well again, but his mother said that she would never let him have another cake. Now there was another scholar in the same school, whose name was Francis. He had written his mother a very pretty letter without one misspelled word or blot, and so his mother, like the mother of Henry, sent him a great cake. Francis decided that he would not be so unwise as to follow the example of Henry, so he took the cake, which was so heavy that he could hardly lift it, and he watched to see that no one was looking, and he slipped up to his chamber and put the cake in his box under lock and key. Every day at play time he used to slip away from his companions, go upstairs on tiptoe, and cut off a tolerable slice of his cake which he would eat by himself. For a whole week did he keep this up, but alas—the cake was so exceedingly large! At last the cake grew dry, and quickly after it became moldy. Finally the maggots got into it, and Francis, with great reluctance, was obliged to throw it away. There was a third little gentleman who went to the same school as Henry and Francis, and his name was Gratian. One day his mother, whom he loved very dearly, sent him a cake because she also loved him. No sooner had it arrived than Gratian called his friends all about him, and said: “Come! Look at what my mother has sent me. You must, each one, have a piece.” So the children all got around the cake as bees resort to a flower, just blown, and Gratian divided the cake with a knife into as many pieces as he had invited boys, with one piece over, for himself. His own piece he said he would eat the next day, and he began playing games with the boys. But a very short time had passed, as they were playing, when a poor man who was carrying a fiddle came into the school yard. He had a very long, gray beard, and he was guided by a little dog who went before him, for the old man was blind. The children noticed how dexterous was the little dog in leading, and how he shook a bell which hung underneath his collar, as if to say: “Do not throw down or run against my master!” When the two had come into the yard, the old man sat down upon a stone, and said: “My dear little gentlemen, I will play you all the pretty tunes that I know, if you will give me leave.” The children wished for nothing half so much as to hear the music, so the old man put his violin in tune and then played over jigs and tunes that had been new in former times. But Gratian, who was standing close to him, noticed that while he played his jolliest airs, a tear would often roll down his cheeks. And Gratian asked him why he wept. “Because,” said the old man, “I am hungry. I have not any one in the world to feed me, or my faithful dog.” Then Gratian felt like crying, too, and he ran to fetch the cake which he had saved to eat himself. He brought it out with joy, and as he ran along he said: “Here, good man, here is some cake for you.” Then Gratian put the cake into the old man’s hands and he, laying down his fiddle, wiped his eyes and began to eat. At every piece he put into his mouth he gave a bit to his faithful little dog, who ate from his hand; and Gratian, standing by, had as much pleasure as if he had eaten the cake himself. Well, when they was all gone the king he asks Mary Jane how they was off for spare rooms, and she said she had one spare room, which would do for Uncle William, and she’d give her own room to Uncle Harvey, which was a little bigger, and she would turn into the room with her sisters and sleep on a cot; and up garret was a little cubby, with a pallet in it. The king said the cubby would do for his valley—meaning me. So Mary Jane took us up, and she showed them their rooms, which was plain but nice. She said she’d have her frocks and a lot of other traps took out of her room if they was in Uncle Harvey’s way, but he said they warn’t. The frocks was hung along the wall, and before them was a curtain made out of calico that hung down to the floor. There was an old hair trunk in one corner, and a guitar-box in another, and all sorts of little knickknacks and jimcracks around, like girls brisken up a room with. The king said it was all the more homely and more pleasanter for these fixings, and so don’t disturb them. The duke’s room was pretty small, but plenty good enough, and so was my cubby. That night they had a big supper, and all them men and women was there, and I stood behind the king and the duke’s chairs and waited on them, and the niggers waited on the rest. Mary Jane she set at the head of the table, with Susan alongside of her, and said how bad the biscuits was, and how mean the preserves was, and how ornery and tough the fried chickens was—and all that kind of rot, the way women always do for to force out compliments; and the people all knowed everything was tiptop, and said so—said “How do you get biscuits to brown so nice?” and “Where, for the land’s sake, did you get these amaz’n pickles?” and all that kind of humbug talky-talk, just the way people always does at a supper, you know. And when it was all done me and the hare-lip had supper in the kitchen off of the leavings, whilst the others was helping the niggers clean up the things. The hare-lip she got to pumping me about England, and blest if I didn’t think the ice was getting mighty thin sometimes. She says: “Did you ever see the king?” “Who? William Fourth? Well, I bet I have—he goes to our church.” I knowed he was dead years ago, but I never let on. So when I says he goes to our church, she says: “What—regular?” “Yes—regular. His pew’s right over opposite ourn—on t’other side the pulpit.” “I thought he lived in London?” “Well, he does. Where would he live?” “But I thought you lived in Sheffield?” I see I was up a stump. I had to let on to get choked with a chicken bone, so as to get time to think how to get down again. Then I says: “I mean he goes to our church regular when he’s in Sheffield. That’s only in the summer time, when he comes there to take the sea baths.” “Why, how you talk—Sheffield ain’t on the sea.” “Well, who said it was?” “Why, you did.” “I didn’t nuther.” “You did!” “I didn’t.” “You did.” “I never said nothing of the kind.” “Well, what did you say, then?” “Said he come to take the sea baths—that’s what I said.” “Well, then, how’s he going to take the sea baths if it ain’t on the sea?” “Looky here,” I says; “did you ever see any Congress-water?” “Yes.” “Well, did you have to go to Congress to get it?” “Why, no.” “Well, neither does William Fourth have to go to the sea to get a sea bath.” “How does he get it, then?” “Gets it the way people down here gets Congress-water—in barrels. There in the palace at Sheffield they’ve got furnaces, and he wants his water hot. They can’t bile that amount of water away off there at the sea. They haven’t got no conveniences for it.” “Oh, I see, now. You might a said that in the first place and saved time.” When she said that I see I was out of the woods again, and so I was comfortable and glad. Next, she says: “Do you go to church, too?” “Yes—regular.” “Where do you set?” “Why, in our pew.” “Whose pew?” “Why, ourn—your Uncle Harvey’s.” “His’n? What does he want with a pew?” “Wants it to set in. What did you reckon he wanted with it?” “Why, I thought he’d be in the pulpit.” Rot him, I forgot he was a preacher. I see I was up a stump again, so I played another chicken bone and got another think. Then I says: “Blame it, do you suppose there ain’t but one preacher to a church?” “Why, what do they want with more?” “What!—to preach before a king? I never did see such a girl as you. They don’t have no less than seventeen.” “Seventeen! My land! Why, I wouldn’t set out such a string as that, not if I never got to glory. It must take ’em a week.” “Shucks, they don’t all of ’em preach the same day—only one of ’em.” “Well, then, what does the rest of ’em do?” “Oh, nothing much. She says: “Honest injun, now, hain’t you been telling me a lot of lies?” “Honest injun,” says I. “None of it at all?” “None of it at all. Not a lie in it,” says I. “Lay your hand on this book and say it.” I see it warn’t nothing but a dictionary, so I laid my hand on it and said it. So then she looked a little better satisfied, and says: “Well, then, I’ll believe some of it; but I hope to gracious if I’ll believe the rest.” “What is it you won’t believe, Joe?” says Mary Jane, stepping in with Susan behind her. “It ain’t right nor kind for you to talk so to him, and him a stranger and so far from his people. How would you like to be treated so?” “That’s always your way, Maim—always sailing in to help somebody before they’re hurt. I hain’t done nothing to him. He’s told some stretchers, I reckon, and I said I wouldn’t swallow it all; and that’s every bit and grain I did say. I reckon he can stand a little thing like that, can’t he?” “I don’t care whether ’twas little or whether ’twas big; he’s here in our house and a stranger, and it wasn’t good of you to say it. If you was in his place it would make you feel ashamed; and so you oughtn’t to say a thing to another person that will make them feel ashamed.” “Why, Mam, he said—” “It don’t make no difference what he said—that ain’t the thing. So she hollered. “All right, then,” says the other girls; “you just ask his pardon.” She done it, too; and she done it beautiful. She done it so beautiful it was good to hear; and I wished I could tell her a thousand lies, so she could do it again. I says to myself, this is another one that I’m letting him rob her of her money. And when she got through they all jest laid theirselves out to make me feel at home and know I was amongst friends. I felt so ornery and low down and mean that I says to myself, my mind’s made up; I’ll hive that money for them or bust. So then I lit out—for bed, I said, meaning some time or another. When I got by myself I went to thinking the thing over. I says to myself, shall I go to that doctor, private, and blow on these frauds? No—that won’t do. He might tell who told him; then the king and the duke would make it warm for me. Shall I go, private, and tell Mary Jane? No—I dasn’t do it. Her face would give them a hint, sure; they’ve got the money, and they’d slide right out and get away with it. If she was to fetch in help I’d get mixed up in the business before it was done with, I judge. No; there ain’t no good way but one. I got to steal that money, somehow; and I got to steal it some way that they won’t suspicion that I done it. They’ve got a good thing here, and they ain’t a-going to leave till they’ve played this family and this town for all they’re worth, so I’ll find a chance time enough. I’ll steal it and hide it; and by and by, when I’m away down the river, I’ll write a letter and tell Mary Jane where it’s hid. But I better hive it tonight if I can, because the doctor maybe hasn’t let up as much as he lets on he has; he might scare them out of here yet. So, thinks I, I’ll go and search them rooms. Upstairs the hall was dark, but I found the duke’s room, and started to paw around it with my hands; but I recollected it wouldn’t be much like the king to let anybody else take care of that money but his own self; so then I went to his room and begun to paw around there. But I see I couldn’t do nothing without a candle, and I dasn’t light one, of course. So I judged I’d got to do the other thing—lay for them and eavesdrop. About that time I hears their footsteps coming, and was going to skip under the bed; I reached for it, but it wasn’t where I thought it would be; but I touched the curtain that hid Mary Jane’s frocks, so I jumped in behind that and snuggled in amongst the gowns, and stood there perfectly still. They come in and shut the door; and the first thing the duke done was to get down and look under the bed. Then I was glad I hadn’t found the bed when I wanted it. And yet, you know, it’s kind of natural to hide under the bed when you are up to anything private. They sets down then, and the king says: “Well, what is it? And cut it middlin’ short, because it’s better for us to be down there a-whoopin’ up the mournin’ than up here givin’ ’em a chance to talk us over.” “Well, this is it, Capet. I ain’t easy; I ain’t comfortable. That doctor lays on my mind. I wanted to know your plans. I’ve got a notion, and I think it’s a sound one.” “What is it, duke?” “That we better glide out of this before three in the morning, and clip it down the river with what we’ve got. Specially, seeing we got it so easy—given back to us, flung at our heads, as you may say, when of course we allowed to have to steal it back. I’m for knocking off and lighting out.” That made me feel pretty bad. About an hour or two ago it would a been a little different, but now it made me feel bad and disappointed, The king rips out and says: “What! And not sell out the rest o’ the property? Here is a short list of some great tools I've discovered over the past year. macOS Only Free Apps - Workflows, snippets, macOS spotlight on steroids. I previously used , another excellent Spotlight alternative. There are , but they want to get it right on macOS first. Raycast Alfred plans to create a version for Linux and Windows - A better date app for macOS. I also love that you can have clocks for different timezones. I have a UTC clock which is super helpful when working on a remote team with colleagues all over the planet. Dato - VSCode style autocomplete in your terminal. It's more than that, but this is one of the first big things they've released. Fig Paid Apps - For managing your menu bar. I used to use , but with the notch in newer MacBook Pros, Bartender made the menubar more usable when dealing with lots of menubar icons. Bartender Vanilla - Helps me prevent my Logitech webcam from losing focus. I also use it for zooming in on my webcam. Webcam Settings - All I can say about CleanMyMac X is it has so many great tools for keeping your Mac running in tip-top shape. CleanMyMac X - For better screenshots and screen recordings. I've found this super useful, and the UX is great. And to top it off, there is a great editor to modify your images. Cleanshot X OS Agnostic - A customizable cross shell prompt. Over 200 services are available through Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS Lambda, on the other hand, continues to stand out for a variety of reasons. With the help of this AWS Lambda lesson, you will be able to better understand the service and determine whether it will meet your computing requirements. During this session, we’ll go through what AWS Lambda actually is, how it works, how it compares to EC2, use cases, benefits, limits, and other details. What Exactly Is AWS Lambda? AWS Lambda is the AWS platform’s event-driven serverless computing solution. Event-driven functions are those that automatically do computations in response to triggers, which are various inputs. However, the AWS Lambda ecosystem goes well beyond what is commonly referred to as “functions as a service” (FaaS). Later on, we’ll talk more about event-driven functions. Lambda’s serverless computing allows programmers to focus on writing and executing code rather than on administration. These activities include, for example, ordering server resources from a cloud provider, keeping servers in tip-top shape, manually adjusting RAM, CPU, and memory resources, and patching security holes. With AWS, your developers don’t have to worry about a thing. As a result, they’ll be able to focus on building code that provides smooth service delivery for your clients. The only thing your programmers have to do is send their code to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and have it deployed for the use cases you specify. For the purposes of developing and running cloud-based operations quickly and cost-effectively, think of AWS Lambda as a completely managed service that eliminates the need to purchase, maintain, or replace any hardware. Or the money and time it would take to hire qualified personnel to handle all of the necessary maintenance tasks. Lambda’s low cost is due in large part to the fact that it makes use of serverless architecture to cut down on unnecessary cloud spending. Is AWS Lambda A Serverless Computing Platform? No. For AWS clients, Lambda is a critical part of serverless technology. Here’s how it’s accomplished: To implement the serverless architecture, you’ll require a complex stack of components. The LAMP stack is a popular architecture since it calls for the following things: Linux OS HTTP server Apache Management of relational databases with MySQL PHP The following is a more detailed stack for a web application: Service for storing and retrieving data from a database Service that acts as an HTTP gateway Service for computing Because it’s built on AWS, Lambda is available to anyone. Although serverless computing is a cost-effective technique for running your operations in the cloud, this is not the case. The serverless architecture has two key advantages: Payment is based on the number of requests Lambda has served, as well as the amount of time it takes AWS to serve those requests. You don’t have to pay anything upfront, unlike most other architectures that charge for running in the background without doing anything for the user. Autoscaling – The service scales up and down automatically. In times of increased demand, it raises computing resources like CPU, RAM, and memory. However, when there is little activity on the servers, some of those services are turned down. When your machine is idle, it can automatically scale from 0 to almost infinite, and then return to 0. AWS Lambda: How It Works? Lambda, AWS’s serverless computing platform of choice, gives developers a powerful tool for building and running cloud-based applications of any complexity. It also interfaces with other AWS web services smoothly so you have all the tools you need to build large-scale cloud apps while also keeping them secure and adaptable at the same time. Other AWS services that you may require are the following: management of databases Creating an app Make a copy of everything and then restore it Hosting a website. E-commerce Big data analytics Chatbots Broadcasting There are currently over 200 AWS services available, and more will be added in the near future. Unlike other services on AWS, Lambda runs your code automatically in response to a variety of events coming from both inside and outside the AWS ecosystem. The reason this matter is because it’s how Lambda functions are called, and those functions perform exactly what you want them to do, regardless of how big they are. AWS Languages and Runtime Support Python js Ruby Java Go C# – .NET Core PowerShell As well as creating functions using the AWS UI, Lambda lets you create them locally and then publish them to AWS. To create Lambda Functions, AWS provides a default blueprint template. Benefits of AWS Lambda Pay per use AWS Lambda costs you based on how much you use it. It relies on the computational power of your function and the amount of network traffic it generates. Scalability As you asked, AWS Lambda generates an instance of your function. It’s also quite scalable. As a result, you can alter it whenever you wish. Serverless Technology You don’t have to worry about the server once you’ve launched your function on AWS Lambda. AWS manages everything for you. AWS Product Integration AWS Lambda offers interaction with other AWS services like S3, API Gateway, DynamoDB, and others, which you may use with your lambda function. CloudWatch for monitoring Logs may be readily added to your AWS Lambda function and filtered on Cloud Watch. On cloud watch, you may also track performance in real-time. Rapid Growth You only need to develop your logic and deploy it to run and execute because it is serverless. In some languages, you may even create/edit your function right in your browser and deploy it fast in the event of an error. Event-Driven Because AWS Lambda is event-driven, your code will only run when it is needed. When someone uploads a file to an S3 bucket and that event is triggered, for example, or when something is processed and you want to send an alert notification or email. AWS Lambda Limitations Package Dimensions The compressed bundle is limited to 50MB, and the uncompressed package is limited to 250MB. Timeout Any function can have a maximum timeout of 900 seconds or 15 minutes. As a result, it would be ineffective in long processes. Execution limit At the account level, the concurrent execution limit is 1000. Start with a cold start The first call to AWS Lambda takes some time to process. Memory It lets you choose from 128MB to 3008MB of RAM for your purpose, with 64MB increments. Cost It is cost-effective for simple activities performed infrequently. However, if you want to use it for a high-volume application, it may cost more than AWS EC2. Conclusion Every technology, as we all know, has its advantages and disadvantages. The usefulness of an application to the customer determines its importance and worth. It is beneficial and cost-effective for small applications, but it may be prohibitively expensive for high-volume applications due to its serverless nature. A Better Introduction to AWS Lambda

If you are tech worker right now, you are in demand. If you are considering moving on to another position, you are going to want to prepare. Of course, you need to burnish your resume and reach out to your LinkedIn network for endorsements. Such things are a given, but if you really want to be a TOUGH negotiator, then certain things must be so. Get your ducks in a row. If you want to be a tough negotiator on your own behalf, you need more than attitude. Some people are quite good at "creating attitude". These  are the great salespeople. What they feel internally is not easily readable on their faces. In fact, they are able to create trust through their facial expressions and mannerisms. These are the special people who can sell sawdust to lumber mills. Frankly, most tech people do not have these kind of skills. This is why you have to prepare to be a tough negotiator. If you want to turn a tech worker, a knowledge worker or logical thinker into a TOUGH negotiator, they have to believe.  Their strong logic circuits make it difficult to "bluff", so they must be in a good position to negotiate well. If you can get these three things in order, you WILL be a tough negotiator. Below are the three most important things you must get in order to be a tough negotiator. Of course, if you have the sales skills to "spin the web", then these are simply nice to haves. However, for me these three things made me a very very tough negotiator. I knew what I wanted and I was going to get it from this employer or the next one. I was determined to get what I wanted. Those with Apserger's Syndrome don't always do a good job across the negotiating table, but I found the secret ingredients which made me a very tough negotiator. #1 Have an employable skill I think this is the most important requirement. If you do not have a skill that is in demand, then you don’t have much negotiating power. I am not saying you have to go to college, though it would likely help make you more employable. I did not get my bachelor’s until very late in my career, but I had coding skills. In any case, you MUST have a skill that businesses covet and will pay money for. If you are a janitor or an administrative assistant or mail room clerk, it is fairly difficult to negotiate anything other than please hire me. In my case, I was a programmer/software engineer/DBA…a full stack developer is what they call me these days. I can do it all, soup to nuts, which also means that I am not necessarily an expert in any one of those things. Still for smaller companies having someone that can wear many different tech hats has its utility in the 21st century, so I have some leverage. Other tech workers with good leverage are security engineers, DevOps, cloud developers. They are all in big demand. Another skillset might be graphic artists. Those who can turn people’s visions into reality are special as are sound technicians in an ever more musical society. And not to leave out blue collar skills, I think journeymen and higher electricians might also have sufficient leverage to pull this off. Any skillset that is in demand is fine, but you MUST, MUST have a skill you can shop. Without it, you are just hoping the hiring manager likes you and you get hired. #2 Keep yourself financially sound You must always be negotiating from a position of strength. In America, strength is defined by having enough money to say, "No." If you are in financial straits or even on a very tight budget, it can be difficult to negotiate anything. Financial hardship is all-consuming. Gaining the aforementioned employable skills is difficult, and I list it as #1, because you have nothing to bargain without skills. However, I don’t think it is as difficult as pulling off financial stability when you are not coming from that place. Depending on where you start economically in this nation, it can take a while before you achieve this state of affairs. You don’t have to be rich, but having a buffer is very much required. If you have to take the first job that comes along, it is hard to negotiate. If you are in such tight financial circumstances that you MUST make a certain number AND that number is the tip top of the pay scale for your skill set, again its hard to negotiate. You will be negotiating hard on money at the beginning of your career and employers can leverage that to their benefit, knowing you NEED the money. When you come in negotiating other aspects of your employment besides salary, you are implicitly saying that your financial house is in order. It’s very, very important to “signal” to moneyed power that you don’t NEED their money. The playing field becomes much more even when you are trading a skill for the money. You are entering into a bargain with moneyed power. You are providing a service and they are paying. There is a clear understanding that if you do not provide the service and/or they no longer need the service, the bargain is over. These days though you are in demand even if someone just showed you the door. There are a lot rich people out there who CAN’T code. #3 Figure out what you want This is very important. It is #3 because this is the luxury of choice which most people do not have. You do not even get to seriously consider #3 until the first two are settled. You need to figure out what you want from the job. Do you want more money? Do you want more responsibility? Do you want better work/life balance? You need to determine what is exactly you are looking for from the next job. If it is money, you are looking for, then have a bottom line number. You have to be clear in your own mind what it is you want from the next job. For me, I was mostly looking for better work/life balance after I had reached a certain salary. I often would negotiate a four ten hour day work week. I would take Wednesdays off and walk my children to elementary school. Honestly, if you want to be a tough negotiator, then become a parent. Now you are negotiating not for what YOU WANT, but what your children NEED.   Once you have children, you see certain things about life with great clarity. Many aspects of life are less clear when there are not tiny individuals dependent upon you successfully navigating this crazy world. The fact is the kids need you to get wins. Their need is what drove me to play hard ball at the negotiating table. They made sure I got what I thought they needed. It motivated me to push back in ways difficult to fathom without the little ones requiring support. Of course, this is not really a requirement to have a family, just a suggestion. Personally, it was not until I was a parent that I really started showing some backbone. I had been doing OK across the negotiating table, but it was only later I became really tough...IMO  I needed parenting inspiration to give me the extra boldness required to negotiate hard with moneyed power. However, if you have the first two nailed, then take some time to figure out the third. It is an absolute MUST to know what you personally want from the next job. Good luck!

You will be speaking to a lot of people, so make sure you know what you want them to remember about you. Focus on what sets you apart and try to keep it fun — people always remember banter over facts. Also, bring throat lozenges or mints — you’ll be doing a lot of talking. Pitch- – Make sure you beforehand! You will need it when registering (either at the venue or the airport). Registration is mandatory for all attendees. App download the app — I’d advise some antibacterial hand gel as you’ll be shaking hands with a lot of people, who will also be in contact with a lot of people. Cold/flu season is in the air, and you want to stay in tip top health. Medication in Lisbon is very expensive, so it might be a good idea to bring some cold/flu tablets and tissues just in case. Hygiene — For those who didn’t go to Web Summit last year, you probably aren’t prepared for how big the actual venue is. Whatever you’re imagining, double it! So if there is one thing you do, make sure you wear comfortable shoes. Shoes — Make sure you pick out the talks you want attend, booths you want to visit and outline what you hope to achieve. Downloading the will make it easier to manage your schedule. The app has a great map of the venue, making it easier to move between talks. Try to get to the event early, so you can get your bearings beforehand. Agenda app — Arrange 1-on-1 meetings via the with the key people you want to speak to. As Web Summit has an amazing Night Summit, why not arrange to go for dinner, or meet them at one of the night events. Alternatively, you could arrange breakfast/lunch at some of Lisbon’s local cafes. Meetings app — You will need lots of cards! Make sure you jot down brief bullet points on the back of each card (location, interests, and areas for collaboration). And keep a small with you, so you can keep track of your conversations. Cards business notebook — Bring water, or a refillable water bottle, and snacks. It’ll be a long day, and even though lots of booths have food, it’s usually sugar filled treats which will leave you feeling lethargic, and the food trucks always have long queues. Nourishment — The average temperature is around 18°C (63°F), but can drop to about 11°C (52°F) in the evening (bring a jacket). During WS17, it’s set to be , so I’d suggest bringing some SPF. There’s usually a nice clickbait title involving the name of a famous Forbes Rich List. So we’re going to go ahead and try to write one of these articles. Let’s pick a and create a clickbait title. We’ll include some unhealthy habits just to make sure it sounds credible. 1. Never sleep You’ve got no time to sleep if you want to be a billionaire. Sleep is for the weak. Who cares about biological necessities when you could be making like Bill Gates! Did you know that he only sleeps for 2 hours a day? That’s a . money fact 2.
