How to Create a Blog using Golang

After getting fed up with React, SPAs, and Javascript around 2021 I decided to re-write my webpage in Rust, after which on how to build a simple blog entirely with Rust. It ended up becoming one of my most popular articles and for good reason; Rust is exciting, fun to write, and blazingly fast. After a while though, I started to feel frustrated with the development process for adding new features to my site: the feedback loop was simply too long. I wrote an article I've always been interested in solo entrepreneurship and technology. But, as I'm getting older, I realize that I might have been more interested in trying out new technologies. Great for learning and growing as an engineer, bad for shipping projects, and starting to see that sweet MRR grow. I decided to re-re-write my site once again, this time in Go for multiple reasons: I write Go for a living Simple language, with a decent type system and fast performance Blazingly fast compile times In this post, I will show how you can create your blog using . I'll assume you're familiar with Go, and know how to configure a router/database/server, and so on. How to Build a Blog with Go

In this blog post, you will learn how to build a complete open-source solution for extracting and shipping traces, metrics, and logs, and correlating between them. The solution proposed uses open-source tools: Grafana, Prometheus, Tempo, and Loki as an observability backend stack, and Odigos as an observability control plane. Theory If you are new to observability, or just interested in the difference between monitoring and observability we recommend watching by the creator of OpenTelemetry. In short, distributed traces, metrics, and logs, with the ability to correlate one signal to another, are the best practice for debugging production issues when working with microservices-based applications. This is exactly what we are going to achieve for our demo application. this short video There is no need to learn any new technologies in order to implement and enjoy observability. With some basic Kubernetes commands — you are ready to get started. Solution Overview We are going to deploy 3 different systems on our Kubernetes cluster: — we will use a microservices-based application written in Java and Python. (for example applications with more programming languages and more complex architecture, use the example from the Odigos ) Target application getting started guide — we are going to use the following applications to store and analyze our observability data: - Grafana: for dashboards and visualization of the data - Prometheus: for storage of metrics data - Loki: for storage of logs data - Tempo: for storage of distributed tracing data Observability backend — we will use Odigos for automatic instrumentation of our applications (automatic extraction of traces, metrics, and logs), collectors deployment, and configuration. Observability control plane Prerequisites The following tools are required to run this tutorial: to run a local Kubernetes cluster with Docker container nodes. Kind to run commands against Kubernetes clusters. Kubernetes CLI (kubectl) to install Odigos and the observability backend using helm charts. Helm CLI Creating the Kubernetes cluster Create a new local Kubernetes cluster, by running the following command: kind create cluster Installing Target Applications We will install a fork of , an example of a bank application created by Google. We use a modified version without any instrumentation code to demonstrate how Odigos automatically collects observability data from the application. bank-of-athnos Deploy the application using the following command: kubectl apply -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/keyval-dev/bank-of-athnos/main/release/kubernetes-manifests.yaml Installing Observability Backend As there is currently no one database that can store traces, logs, and metrics, we will deploy three different databases alongside Grafana as a visualization tool. The following helm chart deploy Tempo (traces database), Prometheus (metrics database), and Loki (logs database) as well as a preconfigured Grafana instance with those databases as data sources. Install the helm chart by executing: helm install --repo https://keyval-dev.github.io/charts observability oss-observability --namespace observability --create-namespace Connecting Everything Together Using Odigos Now that our test application is running, our observability databases are deployed and ready to receive data, the last piece of the puzzle is to extract and ship logs, metrics, and traces from our applications to the observability databases. The simplest and easiest way to do it is by using Odigos- a control plane for observability data. Install Odigos via the helm chart by executing the following commands: helm repo add odigos https://keyval-dev.github.io/odigos-charts/
helm install my-odigos odigos/odigos --namespace odigos-system --create-namespace After all the pods in the namespace are running, open the Odigos UI by running the following command: odigos-system kubectl port-forward svc/odigos-ui 3000:3000 -n odigos-system And navigate to to access the UI. http://localhost:3000 Selecting Applications There are two ways to select which applications Odigos should instrument: Opt out (recommended): Instrument everything, including every new application that will be deployed going forward. Users can still manually mark applications that should not be instrumented Opt In: Only instrument the applications selected manually by the user. For this tutorial, we recommend choosing the opt out mode. Choosing Destinations The next step is to tell Odigos how to reach the three databases that we deployed earlier. Add the following three destinations: Tempo : tempo (you can choose any name you would like) Name : URL http://observability-tempo.observability Prometheus In order to add another destination, select Destinations from the sidebar and click Add New Destination : prometheus Name : URL http://observability-prometheus-server.observability Loki : loki Name : URL http://observability-loki.observability Exploring The Data Wait a few seconds for Odigos to finish deploying the required collectors and instrument the target applications. You can monitor the progress by running kubectl get pods -w Wait for all the pods to be in state (especially notice the transaction service application which has a slow startup time). Running The last step is to explore our observability data in Grafana. We can now see and correlate metrics to traces to logs in order to dive deeply into how our application behaves. Connecting to Grafana Port forward to your Grafana instance by running: kubectl port-forward svc/observability-grafana -n observability 3000:80 And navigating to http://localhost:3000 Enter admin as the username For the password enter the output of the following command: kubectl get secret -n observability observability-grafana -o jsonpath=”{.data.admin-password}” | base64 --decode Service Graph Let’s start by viewing a service graph of our microservices application: Go to the Explore from the sidebar Select Tempo as data source Choose the Service Graph tab Run the query Metrics Now let’s view some metrics. Click on the contacts node from the service graph and choose Request rate A graph similar to the following should be presented: There are many more metrics that Odigos collect and can be queried easily from the Prometheus data source, check out for the full list. this document Traces Click on the contacts application again in the Service Graph but this time choose Request Histogram. In order to correlate metrics to traces, we will use a feature called exemplars. To show exemplars: Open the options menu Turn on exemplars Notice that the histogram is now added with green diamonds. Hover over one of the added points and click . A trace similar to the following should be presented: Query With Tempo In this trace, you can see exactly how much time each part of the entire request took. Digging into one of the sections will show additional information such as database queries. Logs To further investigate specific actions you can simply query the relevant logs by pressing on the small document icon. Press on the document icon next to the balance reader to show the relevant logs: Summary We have shown how easy it is to extract and ship logs, traces, and metrics using only open-source solutions. In addition, we were also able to generate traces, metrics, and logs from an application within minutes. We now also have the ability to correlate between the different signals: We correlated metrics to traces and traces to logs. We now have all the needed data to quickly detect and fix production issues in our target applications. What’s Next? Notice that the observability backend that we installed is not suited for production usage. For high volumes of data, it is recommended to persist those databases to cloud storage like S3 or use a managed offering. Also Published here

How to Build Your Own Observability Platform on Kubernettes

Bodybuilders obsess over obscure muscles that nobody has even heard of. Most gym bros are happy with 6-pack abs. But Bodybuilders? No. They’ve got to have an 8-pack (genetics permitting) with some razor-sharp serratus anterior on the side. They’ll spend two hours a week working out a muscle that most people think is a bone! Every muscle counts. Every muscle is an important part of the final masterpiece. So why isn’t anybody talking about the masseter? That’s the meaty muscle on the side of your jaw. The one Brad Pitt is famous for. There are more articles, videos, and information about getting deep cuts in your hamstrings than there are about building your jawline! How many people see your hamstrings compared to your face? One for every hundred? One for every thousand? I think I know why. It’s because people don’t think there’s anything you can do about your jawline: “Sure, you can lose weight- but that’s about it. You can’t change your genetics.” I get so annoyed when I hear that. You are a Bodybuilder. Your job is to build muscle and deny your genetics. Having a strong jawline is mainly due to having developed masseter muscles. It’s a muscle, and it can be grown just like any other. There’s just not a lot of information on how. Do Those Rubber “Jawline Exercisers” Work? You’ve probably seen the rise of jawline exercisers over the years. You may have even tried them. In any case, these rubber squash ball-type things are popping up all over everybody’s Instagram feeds. Do they work? Not in my own personal experience. But there are before and after photos floating that show mixed results. I don’t doubt that they give your face a workout… just not the type of workout that you actually want. The problem is: it’s not a natural movement. Our jaw structures weren’t designed to bite down with our incisor teeth repeatedly with our mouth wide open- that’s essentially the range of motion these things simulate. It places a lot of stress on the jaw hinge and will ultimately lead to TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint). Not only that- it doesn’t even train the right muscle! Chewing with your mouth wide open like that puts more stress on the temporalis muscle than it does on the masseter. The temporalis is higher up on the side of your head, and not particularly “aesthetically pleasing”. You don’t exactly want to build it, because it contributes to a “round face” look. You want to solely emphasize the masseter. It’s stimulated when your teeth are closer together and you’re chewing and grinding something like tough meat. That’s the motion you want to repeatedly simulate to stress the masseter into growing. The temporalis muscle on the side of your head is NOT a muscle you want to grow! The SAFE Jawline Workout That Actually Works Believe it or not, chewing gum is a great way to improve your jawline. It’s a natural movement (just like chewing food) and you don’t have to dedicate part of your day to do it. You can chew gum while you’re working, driving, or training. Apart from actually being effective, it’s a far more convenient way to work out your jaw muscles than any rubber tool. But obviously chewing gum doesn’t provide much of a workout. You could chew for hours and hardly stress your muscles. It’s like trying to build muscle by running a marathon. You’ve got to add weight and increase the resistance. You’ve got to chew a harder type of gum. Natural tree resins and saps are the best you’ll find. , for example, is 10x harder than regular gum. It’s sugar and calorie-free. And it’s 100% natural. It’s literally a sap picked from a tree on the Greek island Chios. It’s had wars fought over it and it was even once more valuable gold- but that’s another story. Mastic gum 10x harder means 10x more resistance for your masseter. It turns the chewing movement from cardio to a power lift. I’ve seen firsthand how effective it can be. And I’ve yet to hear of anyone complaining of TMJ or a clicking jaw. It seems to be safe and there hasn’t been a backlash against it from the Orthodontics community like there was with the other jawline exercisers. If you want to work out your “sexiest” muscle, then chewing mastic gum is a good bet. It’s one I’m taking, and I’ve seen newbie gains even though I’ve been lifting for 10 years. That seems to be common because it’s a muscle most people haven’t trained before. Get Lean & Stay Lean Just because you’ve built the muscle, doesn’t mean you can see the muscle- you know that. You’ve got to cut after a bulk in order to see the definition. Same for your jawline. Chewing mastic gum (or whatever hard gum you like) will build mass in your masseter. The next step is to get lean so that all your hard work is visible. It’s worthless having a strong, muscular jawline if it’s covered in fat and invisible. How you do that is up to you. I don’t have any new innovative tips or concoctions to help. What works for me might not work for you. All I know is every time I get lean I get compliments on how defined my face is. And every time, I make a mental note that I should stay lean forever… but then I get keen to build muscle and bulk again. It’s a crazy, endless cycle. But even if you’re not too concerned with improving your jawline- don’t forget that losing weight is the best thing you can do to improve your entire appearance. Period. Conclusion Building and sculpting the jawline is still in the experimental phase. It’s not like building barn-door lats where everyone knows to Deadlift, Row and Pull-up. I think many of the current jaw exercisers will be revealed to be dangerous for the jaw joint in the long run. Perhaps chewing hard gum will be too. But if you want to build your jaw muscles, I’m betting that it’s at least a lot safer than anything else. It’s already proven to be more effective.
