In the presentation below, Brenda Loya, Co-Founder and CEO at Tellor leads a presentation on building a decentralized Consumer Price Index (CPI) and how the blockchain could introduce transparency and responsibility into government policies. https://youtu.be/J7ztH4YA730?embedable=true Below is a glossary of key concepts mentioned during Brenda’s talk, intended as a supplement to her video presentation. ABOUT TELLOR Tellor is a blockchain oracle protocol that puts off-chain data onchain in a way that is decentralized, permissionless, and censorship-resistant. Tellor was built to handle  any data type and ensures that data can be provided and checked by anyone. Tellor was launched in 2019 and its native token, $TRB, is used for payment, data reporter staking, and dispute compensation. DECENTRALISED NETWORKS While oracles focus on the methods of bringing off-chain data onchain, the next frontier would be improving off-chain data with open decentralized networks and the transparency they inherently offer. These networks, characterized by their decentralized nature, distribute control and information across a network of participants or nodes, reducing reliance on a central authority. Decentralized networks not only foster greater security but also ensure a higher degree of trust and openness in the validation and verification processes of off-chain data. CONSUMER PRICE INDEX (CPI) The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a crucial economic indicator that reflects inflation or deflation in an economy by measuring changes in the average prices of specific goods and services consumed by households over time. It is calculated using a weighted average approach where a representative sample of goods and services is selected and each item is assigned a weight based on its share of total consumer spending. Price data for these items are collected regularly and then weighted and combined to produce the CPI. The CPI provides insights into the level of inflation, which is crucial for monetary policy and fiscal planning. Central banks, governments, and businesses also use CPI data to adjust interest rates, pensions and tax brackets, and wages. However, calculating the CPI can be complex due to changing consumer preferences, technological advancements, and the inclusion of new goods and services. The CPI has also faced three long-standing criticisms over the years: Substitution Delays in including new things Unmeasured or poorly measured changes in quality However, a more recently identified and significant issue, surpassing the problems of data collection and quality adjustments, is centralization and the lack of transparency. This is where open, decentralized networks can make a big difference by bringing about major improvements to the index. Specific details of the US CPI and how it is being calculated can be found . here OUTLIER DEFINITION An outlier is a data point that significantly deviates from the overall pattern of a dataset. In the context of oracle data reporting, an outlier refers to a data point that significantly differs from the rest of the dataset. It can be an unusually high or low value that stands out when compared to the majority of the data. Identifying outliers in Oracle data reporting is important for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of reports and analyses. Outliers can sometimes indicate errors in data entry, or measurement issues, or they may represent meaningful insights or anomalies that need further investigation. Managing outliers is a common practice in data analysis to ensure the quality and validity of the reported information. OUTLIER DETECTION Outlier detection refers to the process of identifying and managing data points that deviate significantly from the expected values reported by data providers. It involves employing statistical methods, machine learning algorithms, or consensus mechanisms to prevent these outliers from disproportionately influencing the final aggregated data. Striking the right balance between filtering out genuine outliers and preserving accurate data can be challenging as overly aggressive outlier detection algorithms might incorrectly identify valid data as outliers. Median aggregation and threshold-based checks are some of the common outlier detection mechanisms. DATA AGGREGATION Data aggregation is the process of collecting data from various sources to generate precise information for integration into smart contracts and blockchain systems. The techniques employed for aggregation include averaging, median computation, and weighted voting. The choice of aggregation method depends on the specific application and underlying protocol design. In oracle networks, data aggregation is a necessary step to bridging off-chain data sources and on-chain executions while retaining the accuracy and credibility of the data. Striving for greatness is an admirable mission. I look up to the people around me who plan their careers, stick to a schedule, and undertake gratifying personal projects or work their way through rigorous fitness regimens. In many ways, this is the point of life – to continue creating, improving, excelling, learning, and discovering. If we aren't progressing, what are we doing? If we aren't challenging ourselves, it's all too easy to grow stagnant. But there's a temptation to view growing and learning as a series of milestones. Maybe you view progression as finishing a big project at work. Perhaps you only feel satisfied when you've mastered the next weight on your deadlift. I'm starting to realize – as many people do throughout their journey of self-discovery – that growth isn't always about completing something. It's not exclusive to meeting a goal, hitting a milestone, or mastering a skill. You can grow through everyday activities that speak to your soul, too. Picking up a sketchbook for a couple of hours; taking a stroll along the shoreline; listening to a new album; spending Sunday afternoons in the local community garden; these activities don't have an end goal, but they can be as enriching as any professional or personal accomplishment. Today we're going to look at this contrast through the lens of Telic vs Atelic activities. You'll soon know exactly what I mean by "all work and no play"! Let's talk about it. What are Telic and Atelic Activities? We've learned a lot from the great philosophers of the past, one of these great thinkers being Aristotle. In 'Metaphysics,' he made a distinction between . Kinetic or 'telic' activities always have a destination in sight; the Greek word 'telos' refers to an end goal, implying that the activity is terminal. kinesis and energeia For example – if you decide you're going to learn an instrument, the end goal is to be able to play that instrument well. If you're writing an autobiography, the end goal is to finish and publish it. If you have a large client project to complete, the end goal is to deliver it and move on to the next task. An energetic or 'atelic' action is something you can't really exhaust. Spending time in nature doesn't have an end date. Writing daily journal entries can be done every morning, and you'll never run out of things to say because it's an open-ended mindfulness practice. There are a few confusing cases; for instance, if you can play a guitar every day and never run out of tabs to learn, isn't that atelic? Here I would say it depends on your intention. If you're trying to gain guitar-playing skills and get better at it, it's probably telic. If you've already learned how to play and you're enjoying a daily habit of strumming for five minutes each morning before work, that's atelic. It's all about the tangible end goal (or lack thereof). Why Make the Distinction? Like most of my newsletter topics, I came across these terms – telic and atelic – while reading. Philosopher Kieran Setiya published in 2018; it's a deep-thinking book about finding purpose and satisfaction in the second half of life, and it particularly focuses on midlife crises. Midlife: A Philosophical Guide Setiya talks about his own midlife crisis, which he experienced at age 35. It was as though life suddenly lost all meaning. It felt like a series of pointless accomplishments and filled him with intense dread. What Setiya encountered (though he wrote about it in much more detail than I will here) is something called : the feeling of boredom and dissatisfaction that comes from a lack of meaning, purpose, or occupation. He was faced with the futility of life. ennui We’ll come back to Setiya. Schopenhauer's Pessimistic Views In the 19th century, German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer shook things up with his theories of an irrational universe. You might've heard of Schopenhauer – he for being quite pessimistic. has a reputation He believed that life is an endless cycle of suffering and striving, where even joyful activities bring pain. We can never really gain satisfaction, because it's fleeting; after a certain point, our accomplishments and achievements start to become meaningless. To be honest, I think we all play with these ideas throughout our lives. Everything ends, so what's the point? We're just going through the motions until we reach the inevitable conclusion. But I found it interesting to read Setiya's book and hear his solution to Schopenhauer's problem. He suggests that if you view life as a series of goals and accomplishments, you're naturally going to feel dissatisfied by the temporary nature of those accomplishments. This is where telic and atelic activities become relevant to the conversation. Investing in Timeless Tasks "In pursuing a goal, you are trying to exhaust your interaction with something good, as if you were to make friends for the sake of saying goodbye." This is how Setiya introduces the idea of telic vs. atelic activities; he points out that goals with a destination in sight are often short-lived. Particularly in the first 20 or 30 years of life, it's easier to reach destination after destination without feeling a sense of meaninglessness. At a certain point, though, we tend to feel the weight of the endless striving – which is what Setiya felt at age 35. So, where do we turn? Setiya suggests recognizing and embracing a different means of fulfillment in atelic activities. He recommends “a switch in focus from the value of getting there to the value of being on the way.” The Merit of Atelic Living Unless we're mad scientist workaholics, most of us have a decent mix of telic and atelic activities in our lives. It's just natural. Do you keep a journal? Do you spend time with family? Do you take weekend trips? Do you watch documentaries or read books? Is there a particular walking track you take each day after work? Do you lay on a blanket to watch the stars when there's a meteor shower incoming? Is there a particular topic you're fascinated by and like to research? Are there any hobbies that you dip into every once in a while, just for the sake of it? These are all atelic activities. They don't have an end goal, and they don't necessarily require us to 'do' anything; we can simply be present. We can enjoy them without feeling like we need to get something out of them or move on quickly so that we can reach the next destination. ...But I'm Already Doing It! Like I said, you're probably already engaging in a bunch of atelic activities. A lot of us do – it's just that we haven't recognized them as such, because they don't necessarily contribute to our resume or help us reach a milestone. What you're trying to do instead is shift which activities – telic or atelic – you see as most important. Societal norms and the way we're raised typically demand that we focus on telic activities and view them as the most meaningful. Atelic activities can bring us just as much (if not more) value in terms of learning, growth, and satisfaction. If we can't learn to find fulfillment in the menial activities with no end, no destination, and no goal, then we'll struggle to wrestle with those Schopenhauerian feelings of futility. You are not defined by your measurable accomplishments. Life shouldn't just be a series of "I finished that – what's next?" It's great to have goals and ambitions. It's not so great to view these as the only means of growth and satisfaction. Embracing Atelic Life Are you experiencing anything close to a midlife crisis? Maybe you're consumed by thoughts about life and existence or concerned that you should've done more, been more, or achieved more. My first response would be to recommend Setiya's book, but in terms of actionable steps, I can't emphasize this idea of atelic living enough. Look at your life and really identify those everyday, menial activities that you find joy in. Acknowledge the way they make you feel. Accept that if your entire life went by without another measurable accomplishment, you could still find deep meaning and satisfaction in goal-free activities. Inspiration List: Atelic Activities If you're having trouble identifying the atelic activities in your life, I thought it might help to draw up a list of ideas. Here's what I came up with: Finding a nourishing recipe you've never tried before and cooking it/eating it mindfully Taking a walk without listening to music or podcasts Spending an hour in the garden watering plants, pulling weeds, picking flowers Drawing, painting, or coloring Taking a yoga class and focusing on the breath rather than the poses Writing a stream of consciousness in your journal without censoring your thoughts Sitting quietly for 10 minutes with no distractions to observe your thoughts and feelings Reading a book that has nothing to do with work, school, or career goals (i.e., something just for fun) Watching sunsets or sunrises Listening to an entire album from start to finish Can you think of any more? I'd love to hear your ideas in the comments! Wrap Up Atelic activities don't have a destination. They don't typically lead to accomplishments, and they're not necessarily measurable. But that doesn't mean they can't be just as meaningful and enriching as telic activities – if not more so. Striking a balance between work-like goals and soulful goal-free activities is one of my top priorities these days; I know what it feels like to be consumed by the cycle of achievement and ambition. I think it's crucial to recognize that there are other ways to grow. There can be joy in everyday activities, too – even if it doesn't look like productivity or progress on a resume. Every passenger waved his hand to the land so longed for after the tedious voyage, which had not been exempt from painful accidents. Every telescope was directed towards this first specimen of the American continent, and each saw it under a different aspect. The Yankee beheld in it his mother-land; the Southerner regarded these northern lands with a kind of scorn, the scorn of the conquered for the conqueror; the Canadian looked upon it as a man who had only one step to take to call himself a citizen of the Union; the Californian in his mind’s eye traversed the plains of the Far West, and crossing the Rocky Mountains had already set foot on their inexhaustible mines. Saša Milić is uniquely placed to compare oracle networks objectively. On top of being a software engineer and data scientist, Saša is also a co-founder of API3. While she no longer works full-time at any network, Saša has worked closely with various oracle projects in the last few years; during her presentation at the Blockchain Oracle Summit, Saša shared “a smattering of hot takes” about some of the more widely used oracle networks in the space today – including Chainlink, UMA, Tellor, Nest and BAND. According to DeFi Pulse (at the time of presentation), 15 of the top 20 DeFi protocols by Total Value Locked (TVL) use Chainlink, making the network a cornerstone of the DeFi Ecosystem. Chainlink Chainlink works through a decentralized network of nodes that collect data from reliable sources and aggregate the results on-chain. Chainlink refers to this as “t ” because each oracle network, node operator, and the data source is selected in a decentralized way. hree layers of decentralization According to Chainlink, this in the network. eliminates any single point of failure Chainlink, established in 2017, is well-known for consistently providing reliable price data. Chainlink currently caters to the larger part of the DeFi ecosystem, with a majority of the top DeFi projects using their oracle services. Some projects using Chainlink price feeds include , , and . Aave Compound Synthetix Out of all the oracle projects currently on the market, Chainlink seems to be investing the most in cryptography research. According to Saša, almost half of the team at are qualified cryptographers. Chainlink has also integrated two Cornell projects, and . Town Crier is a system that connects smart contracts to external data from trusted websites while also ensuring the confidentiality of the data. Chainlink Labs Town Crier DECO DECO uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify off-chain data while maintaining full data privacy. Chainlink’s whitepapers were also co-authored by well-known cryptographer and Cornell Tech professor Ari Juels who is now the Chief Scientist at Chainlink Labs. Since Saša’s talk at BOS22 in June, Chainlink has that staking will be live later this year. Staking will provide the network with more crypto-economic security, as stakers will initially be tasked with identifying and reporting node operators that fail to meet predetermined standards. For more information on LINK staking, read . announced this article UMA Oracle Review At , security is formalized in an economic guarantee around the cost of corrupting an oracle through their Data Verification Mechanism (DVM). The way these economic guarantee works is based on the idea that every oracle has a minimum price needed to become corrupted. In most cases, this is the price needed to take control of 51% of the voting tokens and is called the Cost of Corruption (CoC). UMA On the other side of the CoC is the potential (PfC). This is the maximum amount of money that can be gained from corrupting an oracle. Therefore, if CoC is kept above PfC, there would be no economic incentive for someone to corrupt the oracle. UMA is designed to measure the PfC of all the contracts in their system, then keep CoC above that number through a series of token buybacks triggered when necessary – more information . Profit from Corruption can be found here UMA also employs the concept of the “Optimistic Oracle” based on their . In essence, when a contract requests data – the “requestor” – anyone can propose an answer – the “proposer.” dispute resolution model The proposer needs to post a bond together with their data. Anyone else can verify that data and raise a dispute to UMA’s DVM if the data is incorrect – the disputer. If no one disputes that data within a set amount of time, the proposer’s bond is released back to them, and they are paid a pre-agreed fee. Because disputes are economically incentivized, a lack of disputes can be seen as verification that a piece of data is true. This mechanism is what makes UMA an ‘optimistic’ oracle. Tellor Oracle Review was one of the earlier projects to talk about (OEV). Simply put, OEV is the potential profit a party could earn by being in the position to update the oracle. Similar in principle to Miner Extractable Value (MEV), if only one party is allowed to update an oracle, they would be in a unique position to take advantage of the difference in prices before they make the update. Tellor Oracle Extractable Value For example, if party A has control of the ETH/USD price feed updates on a certain exchange, then that party can make trades before updating the prices since they know which way the price is going. Tellor approached this potential problem by building an oracle protocol that is truly decentralized, allowing anyone to be a data provider. Their protocol takes advantage of OEV as a means of making payments to oracle data providers rather than using gas fees. A more in-depth explanation of OEV can be found in written by Nicholas Fett, CTO of Tellor. this article Tellor has also been integrated as a fallback oracle in the Liquity protocol’s , which is significant given the effort that the team at Liquity has put into oracle research and their top position on the list. dual-oracle system DeFi Safety Conversely, Tellor’s dispute resolution system has a natural paradox. The system works by paying people to dispute incorrect data. If they raise their dispute successfully, they are paid in Tribute (TRB), Tellor’s native token. The presence of disputers, therefore, works to discourage false reports in the first place. However, since disputers profit from reporting faulty data, discouraging false reports would decrease the demand for disputers since no faulty reports mean no one can profit from disputing. This, in turn, leads to no one watching the data to dispute its accuracy, which then creates more opportunities for false reports. This, as Saša notes, is not a problem unique to Tellor but is common in optimistic oracle systems. Nest Oracle Review is currently only used for price feeds, and miners provide the data for these prices. Nest When miners report a price, they have to put up the same amount of money that they are reporting. This means that if they indicate the wrong price, it creates an opportunity for someone to take advantage of the difference between the reported and actual prices to make a profit.
