Literally hundreds of apps have appeared seemingly overnight in the wake of ChatGPT, making it impossible to keep track of them all. But one worth keeping an eye on is , a workflow automation tool that operates in your browser. Bardeen.ai At first glance, Bardeen may look like just another automation tool elbowing its way into a very crowded space. Yet, it introduces a significant wrinkle: context, meaning it builds automations based on what’s open on your computer screen. It also uses AI to build automations for you - making it vastly faster than its competitors. Unlike other automation tools such as , Bardeen runs as an extension in the user’s browser, so users never have to switch windows to use it. And it reads the tabs open in the browser to build automations that are context aware. The 1970s brought more sophisticated tools, including enterprise resource planning systems and workflow management software, which automated everything from inventory tracking to customer service. The rise of the internet and cloud computing led to further innovation that unstuck automation and sent it flying across departments and geographies. But nothing has accelerated automation as much as artificial intelligence, particularly natural language processing and the advent of large language models like OpenAI’s GPT-4. For most repetitive, digital tasks, it’s only a matter of engineering to get an AI system to do it. Knowledge workers spend as much as 40% of their time on repetitive tasks, a significant waste of time and resources that could be better spent elsewhere. Yet, automation is still limited to large corporations or individuals with technical knowledge. As a result, adoption rates remain low. But Bardeen aims to make automation easy and accessible to everyone. Bardeen’s founders, Pascal Weinberger, CEO, and Artem Harutyunyan, CTO, formed the company in early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down much of the global economy. They named their company after John Bardeen, two-time Nobel Prize winner and co-inventor of the transistor. Weinberger is a self-taught computer programmer from Germany who dropped out of college and worked on a series of startups and projects before at Telefonica’s Barcelona-based skunkworks, Alpha Labs. leading the AI team Harutyunyan came out of Mesosphere, now , which builds orchestration software to control applications running across different hardware. D2iQ In many ways, Bardeen is also a kind of orchestration platform, allowing users to mix and match dozens of applications into a single workflow - Weinberger calls it a kind of ‘superglue’ that holds productivity apps together. The robotic process automation market is mature, with recognized dominant players. But Weinberger believes that the industry faces a slow decline because it lacks solutions for automating tasks with modern SaaS apps, such as Hootsuite and Hubspot. Meanwhile, newer automation solutions, such as Zapier and , are ‘trigger-based,’ designed to execute a series of actions in response to a trigger – when a website is updated for example. But these tools do not consider the user’s current context or real-time decision making. UiPath Weinberger and Harutyunyan aimed to provide contextual automations that were easy to build and did not require coding. Their first prototype met their own immediate needs: an automation that scraped personnel data from GitHub pages and wrote recruiting emails to software engineers. “We saw an opportunity between older robotic process automation and modern SaaS apps,” said Weinberger by phone. Indeed, creating an automation with Bardeen is faster and easier than most Saas apps. Mesosphere’s Leibert, who had left to start a venture capital firm, , led Bardeen’s seed round of3.5 million in February last year, which was followed, less than six months later, by it’s $15.3 million series A. Others in this category are trying to train generative models to automate tasks, which is very cost and time intensive and has yet to show results, whereas with Bardeen’s approach the generative AI is used to build and suggest an automation template to the user, who can then use the platform’s intuitive no-code builder to adjust it to their needs. When the same task has to be automated multiple times, the user then simply needs to click a button and the automation is triggered. That makes it an easy and reliable way to save time and remove friction from every knowledge worker's daily tasks. Combined, the features are like a for workplace productivity. The gathers the industry every year to present new products and initiatives (some of them never really getting to market). This year there have been several announcements both from telcos and Internet players like Google that are relevant in my ongoing . In particular I will focus on ; but also relevant aspects will be , jointly with Samsung’s SmartThings, and Google’s operator-specific functions in Google Assistant via their . Mobile Web Congress telco analysis for the Home Operating System space Telefonica’s announcements around their “Cognitive Intelligence” solution Aura Vodafone’s play in the Smart Home with V-Home Assistant Carrier Program Telefonica’s Aura: An assistant or a ‘skill’? Telefonica’s announcement is focused on their . Aura will allow the management of the operator services: mostly around billing or finding out the data left this month in your tariff, but in Spain it will also offer programming information for the operator TV offering. Other operators have announced assistants in the past, , but Telefonica’s Aura is already available in six of its markets. voice-enabled assistant called Aura like Orange’s Djingo To access this assistant, specific apps will be available in some countries like Argentina or UK, but in others like Germany or Chile the function will be available via Facebook Messenger or Google Assistant. To showcase Alexa is difficult not to mention their main delivery channel: the Echo devices. And that would have created confusion when Telefonica announced their own connected speaker: Movistar Home. Movistar Home: Telefónica’s Echo Show A surprising announcement was Telefónica launching their own device to support their Assistant, . the Movistar Home Again, other operators have announced smart speakers previously, like or , but Telefonica’s approach comes with a screen (which makes me think of another past attempt in Telefónica in the connected device space: the ). This makes the device be more similar to the and allows one of the Show’s main functionalities: video-calls. Orange’s Djingo Deutsche Telekom’s Hello Magenta O2 Joggler Amazon Echo Show, The product is not yet available (it is expected this fall), but with the information provided it looks like Movistar Home functions will include: The same “utility account management” functions available from Aura: check your operator bills, data consumption, ability to top-up, etc. TV content management, including turning the TV on, changing channels by voice and recording shows. Some Smart Home functions (with the single mention of turning lights on). Communications: calling and video-calling. Communications in Movistar Home Telefónica is trying to recapture one of their basic services (“calling”) through a new device, and the way Movistar Home is being presented as a reinvention of the fixed phone line resonates in an interesting way. The idea of having a smart speaker becoming a hands-free option for your fixed line is already covered by Amazon with their for the Echo speakers, but Movistar Home promises some interesting differential features: Echo Connect accesory Turn a regular ongoing voice call into a video-call. Move video-calls to the TV. Move an ongoing call from Movistar Home to the mobile. It is unclear how these specific features will work and I’m particularly interested in some open questions (how will video-calls be transferred to a mobile? Will it need a specific app or will be some device-limitation? Can I send the call to any mobile, or only one in range? How will devices be identified? Will there be a previous registration and will they be assigned a name?) but some of these capabilities, in the context of cross-family communications (grandparents video-calling grandkids, for instance) seem like an interesting revitalization of the traditional fixed phone line. Also, being able to trigger emergency calls using a voice command (plus additional alternatives if the device is open to provide its own accesory ecosystem) feels like something that can be very useful for the elderly if the Movistar Home will support it. The Smart Home question The information currently available does not help to understand to what extent Movistar Home will help to provide a control elements from the Smart Home. Yes, the videos show the device being used to turn on and off lights, but which devices are compatible? Will the Movistar Home include some sort of hub like the does? Or is the device only linked to some specific provider API (like )? Too many questions on what the strategy will be to expand the usage to more devices or to create a Smart Home strategy. Amazon Echo Plus the one for Philips Hue Users that already have some kind of smart devices will probably have a solution to control them already, so the advantage here for Movistar Home is unclear. And the drive to buy additional connected devices after a smart speaker acquisition is not a clear path. Amazon has faced the same issue, and that is why their , so that it can jumpstart users into the connected devices space . Echo Plus option, not only includes a Smart Home Hub but it also adds a Philips Hue bulb This is why I find quite interesting. Vodafone is providing a kit of devices (security cameras, smoke detectors, water leak sensors, smart lighting and smart heating) managed via a home hub (the ), an alarm system service and cloud storage for video security recordings. Vodafone’s play with V-Home Samsung SmartThings Wifi hub The Operator’s advantage This space, providing kits for the Smart Home and supporting them, is where I see the operators having an opportunity in the Home OS. Because operators like Vodafone and Telefónica not only provide a billing channel and connectivity to customers. They also have people trained to go to customers’ homes and install the connectivity and devices required for their fiber or DSL lines. So providing kits and support for their set-up and usage may be a key factor to break the adoption of the Smart Home in some markets. And mixing Telefonica’s Aura/Movistar Home approach with Vodafone’s V-Home we could see customers getting more value from an assistant-enabled speaker that allows them to manage their home environment with a connected thermostat and smart lighting that has also been provided and installed by their operator. This could work as a fidelization tool, as customers will become more cautious of changing provider if they are unclear on how this will affect how they control their home lights or temperature, and . open a path for operators to become the ultimate utility provider for their customers The Operator’s disadvantage But supporting it with an operator-specific device like the Movistar Home can make it harder to create this kind of ecosystem. Telefónica may launch soon in Spanish-speaking markets and Brazil, which can give them an advantage while Amazon or Google are still not selling their devices there. But they will eventually, and when Amazon lands in Spain it will come with their backing of already available and over 40 million devices worldwide for potential network effects. over 15,000 Alexa skills with applications and new associated devices. That doesn’t necesarily fit any of the target audiences for the developer’s app. provides an artificial segmentation It ( ). Amazon is trying to create said network effects with , and Movistar is aiming for the same thing with their video calling function… but in both cases it requires both parties in the communication to be part of the network. In Amazon case this can be solved by just buying an Echo device, but for the Movistar Home it will not only require buying a device but also being a Movistar customer. Other apps built for the device and dependent on netwok effects will suffer the same limitation. reduces opportunities for network effects if there is such a thing of network effects in the smart speaker market Alexa Calling and Messaging services On top of this, to get engagement a key element will be to provide good development programs and tools to create applications for the devices. Amazon has a . Will Telefónica be able to do something similar for Aura and the Movistar Home? developer program that rewards developers that build skills for their Alexa ecosystem All of this will be considered by a developer when they decide wether to create an application for Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Aura (and this is always a decision, because resources to develop applications are always limited), and an operator-centric offering will have a hard time in this context. Partner rather than compete So while I see Movistar Home as a great initiative to expand the awareness of the potential voice-control functions for operator services and a great initiative to evolve the fixed communications, I think this will prompt other operators (like Vodafone) to push generic devices through their channels and try to support similar functions leveraging those pre-existing ecosystems. I expect someone like Vodafone to start selling Amazon Echos and Google Homes, and provide access to their services via skills in those devices. But there is still an opportunity for operators if they can also become enablers of the Smart Home, and they can seriously influence the Home OS wars based on: Helping their customers to get and connect additional Smart Home devices, leveraging their home-installer workforce. Exclusivity or preferred partnerships approaches, that will give preference to one speaker or another. Ability to link their services and communication offering into these devices (that is, providing the turn call to video-call and move to TV functions but on top of any connected speaker). So we may end up seeing Telefonica’s Aura working on top of an Amazon Echo ( ) or a Google Home rather than just in the Movistar Home. But exposing these capabilities across more devices, and leveraging some of their exclusive advantages in the “last mile to the customer” can turn them into very relevant actors in the Home OS. which we sort of do today

Telco Operators want to fight in the Home OS Wars

The trend to bring communication services to multiple devices highlights a limitation that WhatsApp should address soon A couple of recent announcements/rumors have brought to my attention an acceleration of the “Multidevice trend”. In particular: , and one of the interesting pieces is that SIM-enabled version supports regular phone calls and SMS. In fact for which it highlights that Google has recently announced their Android Wear 2.0 version Verizon is launching a specific device “These smartwatches are always connected to your smartphone’s phone number, so texts and calls from the watch use that number, even if the smartphone isn’t with you. This makes it ok to leave your smartphone in the other room or go out for an errand without it and keep up with all your notifications. ” One number, multiple devices. On the rumor space, the expectation is that . both Amazon and Google are planning to enable regular phone calls support in their connected speaker products Both initiatives align quite well with a recent resurgence of this “One number, multiple devices.” approach to traditional communications. Telcos betting on multidevice operators traditionally saw the phone service and identity as something phisically tied to the SIM card, so the ability to bring the phone number to several devices was tied to and required the devices themselves to be SIM-enabled. Mobile MultiSIM service offerings This limitation has been overcome by some operators that have started — some quite recently — to provide access to the communication service across multiple devices without requiring a SIM Rogers in Canada, pioneered this space with their . They offer the ability to make and receive calls and texts across several devices and connectivity based on VoIP applications. It is curious to see that now that this is being followed by lots of other operators, . The justification is that native Wifi calling support appearing on more devices makes this offering no longer relevant. I personally disagree with this consideration, because — as I wrote in Medium some weeks ago — . However I don’t have numbers on how Rogers’ product was performing to make a proper assessment, and they have certainly done their own analysis to take this decision. OneNumber service launch in 2011 Rogers has decided to close down their service owning the customer experience is becoming increasingly critical , in which I have been quite involved personally, was , and from there expanded to other operators like or . TU Go follows a similar approach to OneNumber, but in this case not considering native capabilities in devices as an alternative, but . Telefónica’s TU/TU Go launched by O2 in 2013 VIVO in Brazil movistar in Argentina something that can complement the offering , but their non-SIM offering is limited to Apple devices, using iCloud as the way to propagate the phone identity across them. For other devices, like some tablets and Smartwatches, the solution uses a MultiSIM approach based on the SIM identity. AT&T launched NumberSync in 2015 Android , announced by the end of 2016, and in their case they are following a mixed approach — which I believe is the right one — based on providing apps and web capabilities to enable the capability in practically any available device, but then : Digits is the T-Mobile offering work with some partners to leverage some natives experiences DIGITS will run natively on Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, or Note5 purchased through T-Mobile. They already have DIGITS integrated directly into the devices right out of the box. No software download required To most people these concepts of extending the calling funtion beyond the phone, specially considering getting your calls on a watch, can bring, maybe fond, but definitely impractical memories: I end up doing this much more than I originally expected But to this I have two considerations: Don’t think about wearables: It is extremely useful that computers, tablets or Wifi speakers are able to work with your regular calls. For convenience, productivity or backup, having that ability helps overcome some limitations of the physical phone. What the heck, let’s think about wearables! I was skeptical of calls in a watch too, but I must confess that this is one of the capabilities that I have ended up using a lot on my Apple Watch. I though I would never need to do that, but answering an incoming call while you are doing some activity and your phone is around but not at hand is really convenient.
