Americans <a href="https://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2016/article/the-life-of-american-workers-in-1915.htm" target="_blank">walked everywhere</a>, including multiple weekly trips to local food merchants — grocers, butchers, fruit and seafood markets. There, they payed outrageous prices to sustain a diet based largely on <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/02/america-in-1915/462360/" target="_blank">cold cereal and lard</a>.
