Fintech is all the rage now. The fintech industry has experienced an extraordinary surge in recent years, with the number of startups globally surpassing 26,000. This exponential growth signifies a remarkable increase from approximately 12,000 fintech startups just a couple of years ago in 2019. The rapid expansion of this sector highlights the immense interest and innovation happening in the intersection of finance and technology. These numbers not only demonstrate the attractiveness of fintech as a lucrative field but also the potential it holds for transforming and reshaping the financial landscape on a global scale. With such an abundance of fintech startups emerging worldwide, the industry is poised for further disruption and advancements in the years to come. Yet, when you look around and see so many fintech companies out there that have fewer than 10% of their staff in IT or even completely outsource the technology function to agencies, you may think to yourself, “These guys are not fintech. They’re just fin.” What Determines a Technology Company First and Foremost? What establishes a company as primarily a technology company, and how can this be recognized? Evaluate whether technology plays a central role in the company’s competitive advantage. If the company differentiates itself through technological innovation, research, and development, or proprietary technology, it signifies a strong technology focus. The distinction also lies in staffing: how much of your staff is developing software versus fulfilling other functions, like compliance. If you want to be a fintech company, make it a point to maintain at least 40% of staff expenses on IT. Of course, there are certain functions that will inevitably need to be delegated and outsourced. Nobody wants to reinvent the wheel; nor do you need to. Outsourcing vs. Internal Development One remarkable aspect of working in fintech nowadays is the extensive emphasis on collaborating and integrating with various service providers. There’s a word that is being overused in every fintech-related talk and at every conference – “ecosystem” – but it’s true that fintechs are very much about integration with other providers. You have to build in-house, sure, but you also need to build relationships with banking partners. Speaking about this to other fintech founders, we inevitably come to the same conclusion: one of the most important (and early) strategic decisions that founders make is what kind of tech to focus on developing internally vs. what to outsource. This will more or less determine the business you form as a founder. Let me share with you an example. Our UK fintech startup focuses on a business-substance type of compliance and outsources everything that has to do with UBOs and documents. Silverbird Silverbird doesn’t want to develop its own accounting system, even if it makes sense for it financially because accounting is a commodity. At the same time, it builds a lot in-house and hires a lot of IT engineers from around the world. When I was doing e-commerce and building my previous company Wikimart, we were very much an IT-first company from the get-go. We invested heavily in functions such as SEO, marketing, or software for working with B2B vendors. But as much as we wanted to be a “hands-on marketplace,” we didn’t make our own WMS (warehouse management system). There was no need for us to do so because we found many cheap providers on the market with whom to integrate. If a significant portion of employees are engineers, software developers, data scientists, or technology specialists, it indicates a technology-centric organization. The Right Balance of “Fin” and “Tech” When fintech founders talk about their business model, one idea invariably pops up: the reduction of IT costs as the company grows. But this is not a given. If you’re a true fintech, you have both parts of the business to maintain – your compliance team and your engineers building the product. There can be a 10-20% deviation, but more or less, every employee in your team will fall under one or the other umbrella. 5 Nintendo Switch Mario Games That Your Kids Are Sure to Love

Here's a crazy stat for you. Did you know that salespeople spend than they do actually selling things? I'm not even joking – 22 percent of the time is spent on sales, 23 percent on admin, 12 percent on order processing, and 10 percent on planning. more time on admin Oh, and only 6 percent on lunch breaks. Too bad about that last one. To me, it feels like all of these things should be taking the backseat to selling – but alas, that's not the world we live in. Or is it? In 2022, we've got software tools and gadgets for just about anything we could possibly ask. Whether it's customer management, scheduling, or even something as small as a digital business card, there's an app for that. (And more recently, there's an AI for that, too. Machine learning is being used more and more in sales to automate the busywork and free up time for selling. But that's a story for later in the article.) The point is, there are ways to be more efficient with your time – you just need to know where to look. So without further ado, here are five tips on how to be a more efficient salesperson. Get ready to spend more time selling and less time shredding! 1. Find Leads Faster Way back in June 2021, I spoke to Yoni Tserruya, co-founder and CEO of Lusha. Clean Your Data If you're running a team of salespeople, chances are, they're spending between 20 and 30 percent of their day selling your product or service. The rest is administrative work. There's just one problem with that; you're not decreasing the time spent on data sorting, you're just transferring the work onto yourself. So, how can you speed up the data cleaning process? It may or may not surprise you to hear that artificial intelligence is our best solution to date. There are now AI-powered sales tools specifically designed for lead prioritization – and as author Victor Antonio noted in his book, Sales Ex Machina, tools like this can . erase human error What if you could feed a vast and complex data sheet into a machine, and have it come out the other side as a clean, organized list of leads? That's exactly what these tools are designed to do – and they're only going to become more common (and more necessary) as time goes on. Eat Your Frogs Early “Top performers organize their day into distinct time blocks dedicated to specific activities, concentrating their focus and eliminating distractions within those blocks." - Jeb Blount I quote Jeb here for a couple of reasons: one, because I've personally found this to be true, and two, because it's such a simple yet overlooked strategy. (Oh, and a third reason – Jeb is the most quotable salesman on the planet. But that's just my opinion.) If you've ever read some of the prominent studies around multitasking, like the one , you'll know that switching between tasks comes at an enormous cost to our productivity. discussed here Here's why: multitasking is a myth. When you 'juggle two things at once', you're really just switching between them at a rapid pace. But all that mental energy takes a toll, and you wind up spending more time overall on both tasks. Switching from a phone call to writing emails to catching up on client paperwork is only going to prolong the amount of time you spend on administrative tasks – which is why I recommend that you eat your frogs early (the frogs in question being your administrative work.) Set aside the first block of your day to handle every single admin-related task you can think of. That way, you'll stay one-track-minded until it's time to switch over to cold calling or meeting with clients. 4. Automate Your Cold Emails Whether we like it or not, emails remain a prominent sales strategy. It's just unfortunate that they're such a time suck. For a while now, we've had access to tools that make the process easier. MailChimp, Constant Contact, and HubSpot Sales are just a few of the more popular ones. But what if I told you there's a way to automate your cold email process even further? Tools like Phrasee and Lyne.ai use split testing data to determine which of your emails have the best chance of getting opened, and using that info, they craft emails for you that are more likely to get responses. Sometimes I can't believe we live in a world where this is possible. It's insane, and it's great news for us salespeople. 5. Keep Your CRM Up-To-Date Customer relationship management tools are super helpful for keeping all your info in one spot. They quickly become a pain in the rear, though, when you're pressed for time and can't continually update client profiles. The answer? Use integrations. Make the movement of data between platforms so seamless that you hardly know it's happening. Some of the best integrations to use, depending on your needs: Call logging. Set up your CRM with a platform like LiiD so that every time a sales call is made or received, it's automatically logged in your CRM. Emails. Integrate your CRM into Outlook or Gmail so that you can automatically log emails and have them appear in your CRM, as well as easily access customer data while you're crafting emails. Social media. Automate posts and outreach by integrating your CRM with Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn. Data and surveys. If you use services like Type Form and Survey Monkey to collect customer data and feedback, integrate them with your CRM so you can automatically populate fields. Team communication. You can connect your Slack to most CRMs to prevent switching between tabs and reduce the risk of forgetting to update your CRM with important customer info. These only scratch the surface, by the way. Do some research and see what other integrations might be helpful for you and your team – there's a whole world of possibilities out there. Web3 is about to disrupt a bunch of industries that mostly have no clue what’s about to happen… but it’s no guarantee that it will be as decentralized as advertised. So far blockchain technology has had a mixed record of decentralization. All old-school hodlers can look at the ability of besieged Ukrainians to raise funds from around the world and rightfully pat themselves on the back. And the Russian freelance coders who've been dodging taxes by getting paid in crypto for the past five years now seem suddenly prescient as the Ruble collapses in value overnight. But the quiet and rapid adoption of blockchain to decrease currency exchange & money transfer costs and streamline supply chains has largely been implemented by banks and mainstream companies, who have not passed the savings on to customers. As any company with a fiduciary responsibility to shareholders would do, they’ve used the technology to reduce their expenses while billing customers the same amounts as they did before. You can expect more of this as__ __ and banks experiment further with crypto. If you have any doubt about where this is going, just look at the management of Goldman Sachs-backed Circle and it’s clear that centralized traditional finance is already fully on board with crypto. clearinghouses team and board members But what about DeFi? That’s decentralized… Certainly, Web3 optimists can look at the boom in DeFi over the past few years and point to the obvious increase in the  adoption of peer-to-peer lending and borrowing outside of traditional banks as a key achievement. This is from an awareness and adoption standpoint – and even from a technological and UX advancement standpoint; but are these staked crypto loans being used by people in your neighborhood to open a new pizza joint? Or pay for a kid’s college education? No. They are mainly used by crypto daytraders to increase their leverage on speculative trades with other crypto daytraders. The infrastructure has been built for wider, decentralized adoption, but the actual users of the system are the same crypto insiders, technophiles, decentralization idealists and speculators that were there before. If your mom still doesn’t get it, it’s not mainstream and any crypto idealist needs to be realistic about this. We’ve been here before That is not to say that Web3 can’t or won’t be decentralized. It’s merely a modest warning that it will require the purposeful adoption of some technologies over others to guide the eventual adoption of blockchain technology by mainstream audiences. For those old enough to remember, Web1 and Web2 were both envisioned to be utopian knowledge-sharing revolutions that would free people from the constraints of large corporations, media and governments as well. Craigslist and Wikipedia are the surviving species from these early idealist eras… and sites like Github are probably their Web2 descendants. But we all know what happened. In a space with no regulation, the deep-seated caveman instincts of humans were freed of constraining Enlightenment ideas such as – and even ancient religious constraints such as Monopolies thrived, throttling smaller companies. Bullies shouted down disagreeing viewpoints, stalking and threatening dissenters. “human equality” “treat others how you want to be treated.” Racists and pedophiles created forums to amplify their obsessions. The desperate and the dishonest were empowered to extort any person or company they could outwit with almost no repercussion and a low likelihood of being caught or stopped.  And a sociopath who founded his company by stealing it from the people who hired him to do the coding became the owner of the most powerful publishing and communications platform that has ever existed… with predictable results. What’s at stake All I’m saying is this. Facebook has changed its name to Meta – which, aside from being a lame rebranding tactic after years of bad press, is also a clear indication of Zuckerberg’s intent to own the metaverse like a real-world James Halliday. And how does one monetize the metaverse? Digital products and NFTs are already growing exponentially within gaming. If NFTs are the future medium of exchange within immersive or virtual worlds, it is very clear that Big Tech has no intention of sitting on the sidelines while decentralized versions of marketplaces, virtual worlds and content licensing platforms form organically. Even now, the biggest NFT marketplace in the world, OpenSea is a private company, not a DAO. The NFT creators who have driven its exponential growth – widely marketed as proof of the coming Web3 wave – have as much power over its governance as the musicians on Spotify have. And if there were any doubt left, according to Uphold’s Unboxed newsletter, “Meta's total fee for sales made through the Meta Quest Store… [is a] whopping 47.5% all-in, after including hardware platform fees and partner Horizon Worlds' sizable taste.” Compare that to OpenSea’s 2.5% take – or even Apple’s App Store 30% cut and you can see Zuck is not playing around here. And why should anyone expect Spotify or YouTube or Getty Images or any other content licensing & monetization platform to do nothing while a decentralized version of its marketplace forms and drains away their customers and artists? Just as video game makers are realizing that they can make their own interoperable NFT products that can be ported between games without needing ImmutableX or anyone else, we should expect that other platforms ripe for NFT disruption will likewise discover that they can get all the benefits of the NFT economy without decentralizing anything. like Sega Consciously building decentralization into Web3 Okay, enough of the dark side. Believe it or not, I’m not at all pessimistic about decentralization, but the time to impact how this ecosystem develops is now. For a short time, the technology is still too insular to have been adopted yet, which means there is time for the Web3 idealists, visionaries, technologists and yes, even the hustler-speculators to shape how it develops. There are some key nascent technologies in the space that deserve your attention… not just for their potential speculative value, but for the type of Web3 that could exist if we decide we want it to. Projects are built to be decentralized and to truly shift platform ownership, profit-sharing and governance to the users and value-creators of the platform. This is not at all anywhere close to a comprehensive list. I have a day job and kids so I can’t spend all day researching this stuff, but you should – and add anything you think is worth checking out as well. The point is that non-crypto dollars and people will flock to existing marketplaces and products with followings. So it’s important to support projects that are decentralized before the gates fly open and everyone just ends up in Facebook3 because that’s where everyone else seemed to be. Octopus Network Yes, I am submitting this article to the Octopus Network writing contest – which is why I first heard about this project (point for you Octopus marketing team!). BUT, it’s a great project – very much like Polkadot or ImmutableX in that it aims for making interoperability a normal part of the crypto sphere since I think we can all agree non-crypto people are not that interested in what token does what and just want applications that are simple to use. What makes it particularly interesting is that it is built to be something like an incubator for Web3 startups. Everything they’ve built is about reducing the startup capital required to bootstrap a new company – making it possible to rent instead of build all of the expensive proof-of-stake/work security that makes the blockchain valuable and scale it as needed. Contrast this to the current method of spending millions of dollars to build, launch and gain enough adoption of a new token for it to have any real security or liquidity and you can see that this throws the doors wide open to a LOT more scrappy entrepreneurs with crazy and/or visionary ideas. My one tip is to skip the website, which I found baffling and jargon-packed (I’m not an engineer, just a crypto marketer & UX person), and . It spells out in plain English what the vision is and why they built it. (Sorry - point taken back from the Octopus marketing team). read the white paper (built in the Octopus Network - Near protocol) DEIP The NFT space is awash in hyperbole about the creator economy… but so far most of what I’ve seen are really expensive animated gifs. Clearly, I’m not the target audience. This is why I find DEIP so interesting. It is aimed squarely at disrupting the IP, licensing, and rights management industry by creating a drag-and-drop marketplace for copyrights, trademarks as well as other non-tangible assets with real-world value (ie: actual copyrights, not an animated gif of a cat). This could not only disrupt the massive rent-seeking industry of IP attorneys, licensing agents, talent managers, and creative artist agents as well as Web2 content marketplaces but make the barrier to entry for unknown talents extremely low as well. This could drive an explosive creative marketplace of talented nobodies getting royalties and licensing deals. You could imagine whole product licensing, stock video, image and sound marketplaces and even decentralized streaming networks being built on top of something like this (someday). has a good explainer. This medium post (on Ethereum) Immutable X A competitor to Octopus that has built a Layer 2 onto Ethereum to address the high gas fees and other technical issues that are barriers to entry for new businesses. To be clear, while there are some voting rights with their token, this is not the fully decentralized web3 idealist project that Octopus, Solana or Cardano are. However, its technology and service offerings, much like Octopus’ are built around helping Web3 companies launch. The main upside here is that it’s built on Ethereum which has a much larger audience built-in than other protocols…. I guess the whole point of interoperable systems is that they can exchange tokens easily so it’s unclear if this advantage will turn out to matter that much to future mainstream users. If you flip a light switch in the US or one in France you don’t really care whether it’s running on AC or DC power; you just care that somehow it works. The opportunities for digital product makers could be huge within the gaming space with this platform as part of its technology makes adding royalties to NFTs simple and it’s already got its own well-known NFT games. – and Audius Solana Audius, the Web3 competitor to Apple Music, Spotify, and other Web2 music streaming services is growing rapidly. It’s also truly decentralized, which has made it bump up against technical scaling issues within Ethereum, to the ultra-fast and very inexpensive Solana system. so it’s announced a move This is a great case study of how nascent Web3 companies that start within accelerator-like platforms can scale to compete with Web2 user experience as they grow. Solana may turn out to be the enterprise-grade version of Web3 infrastructure needed to compete at scale with the no-lag UX that users have come to expect from their apps. Avalanche One of the most exciting – and hyped – players in the space, AVA Labs, just raised to keep the Avalanche ecosystem growing rapidly. Another Ethereum competitor, Avalanche has attracted attention in the crypto developer space because it claims to be the fastest smart contract platform, that’s both eco-friendly and adaptable to the transaction volumes and speed common in current securities trading. a lot of money Its token model is fully non-custodial and is built to avoid winner-take-all fees as Bitcoin has and gas-per-transaction costs like Ethereum have. Although it currently doesn’t seem to have the supportive incubator-like system that both Octopus and Immutable have, for sophisticated and funded teams of pros this platform could truly replace incumbent financial systems if it lives up to the hype. and Cardano SingularityNET If you want to freak out about how fast things could get out of control, (and actually pretty much anything from Singularity) about their move to Cardano is a great place to start. Cardano positions itself as the most academically-accredited Ethereum competitor with verifiable security and environmental cred. They don’t talk about NFTs or games. They talk about the future of humanity… and how important it is to marry blockchain and AI before AI, which is currently controlled by a handful of people, runs the world (or at least the entire financial system). this post by SingularityNET Critical to this will be AI’s inevitable role in content moderation in the future. It’s clear what’s happening now is not working, and also clear that the stakes of getting content moderation wrong can foment , and . In this context, I think we’d all prefer decentralized AI content moderation governed by users to the centralized ones we have now. insurrections wars ethnic cleansing This enterprise-grade focus on decentralized technology is a critical part of any realistic plan to maintain anything more than a cosmetic version of democracy for the future and deserves support. Spectrum.AI While not a crypto company, independent AI companies like Spectrum Labs can act as a critical stepping stone to decentralized content moderation (see the bullet above for why this matters if you skimmed it). No one really trusts the current Web2 social media platforms to moderate content properly when their financial model is still built around driving engagement for ad views. They can hire as many ombudsmen and make as many Ted Talk speeches as they want, but until their revenue models are no longer built on keeping people scrolling as long as possible, you can count on algorithms that continue to promote content that makes people angry, self-righteous and outraged because it keeps them on the page longer than cute kitten posts do. By using tools, community platforms can begin to separate themselves from the conflict of interest inherent in policing their own platforms until a fully decentralized system emerges. Given the importance of this, and its immediate impact on daily headlines, there’s no time to wait for a perfect solution and companies like this can buy some time. science-driven third-party AI content moderation Rarify I just learned about this company that has just closed a to build a system of APIs to make it simple for non-crypto businesses to easily integrate NFTs (and potentially other blockchain products) into their existing businesses. If it works as advertised, this throws open the doors for Web2 companies to add NFT digital products into their existing eCommerce stores, games, marketplaces, etc without having to hire blockchain engineers. round of funding from Pantera An advancement like this could lead to the very rapid adoption of NFTs since Rarify figures out all of the crypto mechanics in the background so end users can just use their normal fiat-based credit cards as they’ve always done and not have to figure out how to buy crypto or research what a wallet is and how to set it up separately. There are (probably) thousands more great companies doing interesting things that, if adopted broadly, could help the transition to Web3 live up to its potential. These are just a few I’ve read about recently, but the point is not to start day trading these specific tokens but to build on, invest in or grow applications that reflect the values you want to see in the world 5 or 10 years from now. The current crypto community is, for better or worse, the early-adopter base whose attention and investment will help define which platforms get outside capital and mainstream user adoption in the next few years. The Cost of Data Breach Report, , finds that the average cost of damage among respondents (537 companies in 17 countries) reached $4.24 million - the highest cost in the last 17 years. published by IBM Of the total number of incidents, 44% involved the personal data of users. Leaks pose huge reputation and financial risks. It is hard to forget , which paid a record $5 billion fine for leaking users' private information. And Facebook is not alone - in the last year, , , , and other giants have joined the club. These companies were fined for violating the EU General Data Protection Regulation. the story of Facebook Amazon WhatsApp Vodafone You do not have to be a giant corporation to fear leaks or attacks just because you do not collect this much data. Data about an individual is the most valuable. IBM estimates that each lost record will cost the company $180 in 2021. This cost will only increase in the future. So you need to learn how to create a secure mobile application and avoid risks. Identifying whether your app is safe You can do the safety audit in several ways: Internal audit - conduct your own pen-test or analysis of the application's security; External audit - include cyber-security specialists in the audit. Security analysis and pen-testing are two different things. During a pen-test, the attacker attempts to find a vulnerability and exploit it to cause maximum damage. In the security analysis, the goal is to cover as many threats as possible using the most tools. Both tools, however, rely on the same requirements - the security standards. The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) is an independent, international, non-profit organization. OWASP compiles and publishes the top 10 vulnerabilities in digital products every year. OWASP As an open initiative, the project issues no certificates. Even so, OWASP is today the standard in cyber-security all over the world. In order to assess the safety of your product, you should use the top 10 OWASPs. External cyber-security experts also use these guidelines. Every three to four years, the rating is updated. Here's what it looked like in 2021: FamilyGo experience: detecting threats and fixing them Our security analysis of the mobile application will be used as an example to show what threats the scan can uncover and how they should be handled. FamilyGo The application includes a GPS tracker, messenger, task manager, SOS button, radio, and baby monitor. In a nutshell, it provides everything you need to communicate with loved ones and solve everyday problems: monitor the safety of children and stay in constant contact with relatives. No data is stored on the server, nor is it transferred to developers or third parties. Because all data is encrypted and stored on users' devices, only participants can access it. We want to create a completely secure space where loved ones can communicate without being invaded by strangers. E2E encryption based on Signal protocol protects the transmitted information. Information is transmitted via asymmetric encryption - a pair of public and private keys is generated for the sender and recipient, without which the correspondence cannot be decrypted. The private key is stored on the phone and is never shared. To get started, no phone number or other details are required. The application generates an anonymous login automatically after installation. Adding members to the chat is as simple as sending them an invitation code or scanning a QR code. How the Audit was Conducted An information security audit is essential to the project. We wanted to build an application that was as secure as possible. Thus, we decided to conduct a comprehensive analysis with the help of external experts. Android and iOS versions, as well as the API, have been tested. All work has been done using a "black box." This means the cyber-security experts did not have access to the application code. The audit revealed the following: 12 vulnerabilities in an Android application: 2 are high, 3 are medium, and 7 are low risk; 12 vulnerabilities in an iPhone application: one is high, 6 are medium, and 5 are low risk; the API used by the mobile application has 2 low-severity vulnerabilities. Taking a Breath This is where we pause to explain the meaning of these degrees of risk. Audits help both to identify vulnerabilities and to categorize them according to the level of risk they pose. OWASP defines three categories of vulnerability: high, medium, and low: High - Vulnerabilities can lead to remote access, the execution of arbitrary code by an attacker, and the disclosure of confidential information; Medium - Vulnerabilities have limited impact, but can be exploited to obtain sensitive information, which, when combined with other vulnerabilities, allows for remote access; Low - do not pose a direct threat, but can be utilized to collect information and develop attack vectors. Everything is simple in theory. The application is unsafe if a vulnerability exists, and the issue needs to be resolved. A high vulnerability is very bad, you must act immediately. Low - also not very good, but tolerable, can be reduced to some extent. In reality, the audit results are much more complicated. Vulnerabilities: causes, risks, and remedies OWASP classifier is somewhat like a "spherical cow in a vacuum". It is a great concept, but unreal. You can create a highly secure application by using the checklist above. The ideal patient, however, is a dead one. Be prepared that vulnerabilities from the checklist that are related to your application's architecture and business logic will not be regarded as vulnerabilities when you check it against OWASP. Let's say you have a food delivery application that OWASP says is insecure because it includes a 4-character pin code. Although in terms of common sense, who needs an 8-digit password to protect a list of favorite cheeses? The OWASP classifier found 12 vulnerabilities in the our application. Of these, only two were really serious and critical. Ten vulnerabilities could hardly be considered vulnerabilities: they either contradicted the business logic or could not be repaired conceptually. Two critical vulnerabilities: The password generation algorithm is insecure (medium risk). This vulnerability was associated with the generation of a random login value. We have changed the algorithm to completely prevent data repetition; Storage of sensitive data in local storage is insecure (high risk). Using this vulnerability, the auditors were able to access the database on the phone using the key that was stored in the RAM. We have fixed this problem by changing the mechanism and making it dynamic. Major Outcomes Here is a summary of what the audit found and what problems were corrected. The audit identified 12 vulnerabilities: one obsolete component - was not repairable; two superuser rights and ROM data - partially fixed; nine threats were completely fixed, despite the inconsistencies, redundancy, and apparent failure of these threats on our application. Why did we do that? Our team felt it was crucial to create a product that protects user data as much as possible. There is no 100% secure, unhackable application. When you pick up your phone or log on to your computer, the threat immediately appears. In this case, only the cost of hacking determines the level of security. The more difficult it is for an attacker to gain access to your data and the more expensive the attack, the more secure the application. When a super level is achieved, it is easier to take you captive and find out everything on your own than to break all the defense systems. In the light of our security analysis and the results of the study, we can proudly state that FamilyGo has nearly reached the point where hacking is pretty much meaningless - accessing user data is too expensive. Conclusion: A few tips for securing your app Tip #1 - increase your own expertise. As practice shows, an external audit may not always be relevant to your project. Train developers and help them improve their skills. Create internal checklists and standards before every release. Tip #2 - monitor the situation constantly. If a new function is implemented, immediately check whether it meets the requirements, if there is a memory leak. Check for updates to the operating system and libraries at least once a year. Tip #3 - don't neglect external evaluation. You shouldn't assume that the OWASP requirements don't correspond to reality at all, and you can do it on your own. In addition to looking at the product from the point of view of business logic, it is also necessary to consider it from an independent standpoint. A comprehensive audit can help you identify the shortcomings you might not have noticed otherwise. Tip #4 - get ready to invest. At least 30% of the budget should be allocated to the development of internal competencies, the hunt for security specialists, penetration tests, and analyses. Our own experience shows that security is indeed very expensive. When you work with the product, keep this in mind, because hackers can cause much more damage.

OWASP Audit: How to Make Sure Your App is Secure

We spend a large part of our life at work, and yet when it comes to making a decision “Is this the right company for me,” most of us rely only on our expert intuition without any solid data to back it up. Daniel Kahneman, a psychologist and economist notable for his work on the psychology of judgement and decision-making, says that our gut instinct alone can fail us when we make quick decisions based on our past experience as it’s a key source of noise. Instead he asks us to resist premature intuition “Intuition should not be banned, but it should be informed, disciplined and delayed.” Data or intuition alone can’t help you make the right decision. You need both data and intuition to make an informed decision. Think of it this way. When you meet a new person, how do you decide if it’s a relationship worth investing in or not? You probably look for signals that help you connect their identity to your identity. The relationship can’t get very far if the two are very far apart or if there’s something about the other person that does not match your value system. These signals provide valuable data points to form an opinion and you further rely on your intuition to guide you towards a specific decision. When it comes to your job though, do you apply the same level of due diligence? Companies are after all in some sense similar to people. You can think of a company as a group of people with a shared identity. Spend effort into knowing this identity as you would with any new person. Determine if it’s a relationship worth investing. No decision making framework can guarantee a successful outcome. You can never know for sure if you are making the right decision. Companies evolve. Leadership changes. Culture transforms. What was indeed a great choice a year back, may look like a terrible decision one year down the line. Knowing that you used the right framework to decide can help you move forward instead of ruminating about it later when the outcome does not match your expectations. And how can you make this decision? By learning to ask the right questions. You can catch early signs that can prevent you from investing in a wrong relationship. 6 steps to determine if a company is right for you 1. What do you care about? You first need to be clear about what really matters to you. This is really important. Because if you don’t know what you want, you can’t actively watch out for clues that can guide your decision-making. The question you need to ask yourself is “Why do I want to work at this company?” Are you looking for a bigger paycheck? Does the type of work you do or the kind of problems you get to solve matter to you? Do you want to work for a company where your work is appreciated? Grab a pen and a paper and stack rank how you value each at work - compensation, learning, environment, rewards/recognition, creativity/innovation, mission, role/impact, colleagues. You can add more items to this list. Don’t be vague about answering this question. Be crystal clear about your priorities. When you first sit down to ponder your goals for the future, remember to have your core values and life priorities handy as points of reference. As long as your values and priorities remain valid, they should be the compass for directing your goals. Otherwise, you set yourself up for a future of frustration and unhappiness - S.J. Scott To validate your thinking, invert your question and now ask yourself “What will make me miserable at this company if I don’t get it?” Something that will annoy you or bother you so much that you will consider leaving the organization. Inversion is a powerful mental model to explore the problem by thinking the opposite of what you seek. This form of reverse questioning can help you inquire your own assumptions, beliefs and in turn gain a better perspective to find answers to your original question with greater clarity and understanding. Repeat the stack ranking exercise above with this question in mind. If your reasons for working at the company match the “what makes me miserable” list, you are all set to move on to the next step. If not, you need to reconsider your priorities. 2. What are their strengths that seem attractive to you? Every company has something to offer of its own. It’s strengths. Do they have strengths that matter to you? What is it about them that makes the decision lucrative? Do they attract the best talent? Are they the market leaders in their segment? Are they known for their cutting edge technology? Do they offer the best compensation and perks? Are they known for being an employee friendly workplace? If nothing about their strengths attracts you, reconsider your choice or dig deeper to find the strength that catches your fancy. Their strength should be a powerful motivator for you to join this organization. 3. Are your priorities aligned with their values? Knowing how your values are aligned will help you determine if you will thrive at the company or barely survive. For example, if you value creativity and innovation, try to find out how the company empowers its employees. Do people feel safe to speak up and take risks? How are mistakes and failures handled? If you value teamwork, find out how the company handles bad behavior. One bad apple at the company may not represent company values. However, presence of more than one such person could be a sign that the company tolerates or even incentivizes such behavior. If you value learning and growth, find out if meeting deadlines is given more weightage than what people are learning on the job. Take your key priorities from step 1 and gather information aligned with those priorities. You won’t get everything in a single organization. What you really need to look for is an alignment of your top 2-3 priorities with what the company has to offer. 4. Can you live with the company’s flaws? Most of the time we are driven towards a company’s success, but fail to look at its flaws. No company is perfect. If there are strengths, there will be downsides too. If a company does a lot of things right, it will make mistakes too. A company that’s great in strategic planning may suck at execution. A company that’s known for great compensation may lead with a top-down culture. These flaws may not be visible to a person outside and will need a little bit of digging and work on your part. Look up ex-employees. Try to get their perspective. Do you have connections with current employees? Try to find out what they have to say. Explicitly ask them about the flaws. You shouldn’t go with one feedback. But if multiple people point out the same thing, in all likelihood that’s how things are. Now evaluate if this is something you can live with. Knowing this upfront not only helps you make the right decision, it will also help you be better prepared to deal with it later. Knowing it’s a conscious choice you made earlier will motivate you to move forward and apply constructive solutions to your problem instead of feeling frustrated by your situation and adopting destructive patterns of behavior later. 5. Does it align with your life? We don’t pay enough attention to the changes to our life that our job may demand. If you are required to travel three days a week, who will drop your kids to school on those days if you were the one taking care of it? What will happen to your plan to be home in time for dinner if your job requires you to attend meetings in the evenings? How will driving an extra hour each day fit with your goal to have a life which does not involve a stress filled commute? What happens to your plan to hit the gym in the morning when you need to have calls at the same time with the members of your team who are located all over the world. If you only try to focus on the professional goals while not thinking about the impact they have on your personal goals, especially when you truly care about these personal goals, you will be constantly conflicted and that won’t be good for your personal well-being. Work-life balance, work-life effectiveness, personal and professional satisfaction—or whatever you choose to call it—is not an entitlement or benefit. Your company cannot give it to you. You have to create it for yourself. You are personally responsible for living the best life you can - Matthew Kelly Carefully evaluate how your expectations from the job blend with other aspects of your life and the changes you will need to incorporate to make them work together. What challenges do you see? Do you have a plan that might work? 6. What does leadership at the company look like? Leadership at the company can give a sneak peek into the culture of the organization. Do some research on people who occupy leadership positions at the company. Look them up on platforms like LinkedIn. Speak to the people in your network who might have worked with them in the past. Try to collect as much data as you can about their leadership styles. Do you see a hiring pattern in terms of the kind of leaders being hired at the company? Do they demonstrate qualities that you would look for in a leader? Try to picture yourself working with them or being a part of their direction. Does it sound exciting or do you feel they don’t reflect your values? After collecting these signals, ask yourself this final question - In which direction is data guiding me and what does my intuition say? You can never be certain if you are making the right choice but by asking these questions, you can be prepared to make a better decision. Summary Deciding to join an organization is a huge commitment that requires careful evaluation to make the right decision. Organizations are like people. Use both data and intuition to make the right decision just like you would do with any relationship. Start with defining your priorities. Identify what matters to you and what can make you miserable at the organization if you don’t get it. Learn about the company's strengths. What about them attracts you? Try to align your top 2-3 priorities with what the company has to offer. No organization can give you everything. Make sure your top priorities are well aligned. Every company with its strengths has some flaws too. Dig to learn about these flaws and make sure you are willing to accept them. Evaluate how the expectations from the job align with your personal goals. You may need to make certain adjustments. Make sure you have a plan to make your work goals align with your personal goals. Understanding the kind of leadership that exists at the company can give you a sneak peek into the leadership at this organization. Make sure they demonstrate qualities you look for in a leader. Finally, combine all the data you have collected from the interview process and your network with your intuition to make a final decision. If not, what do you usually write about? I write a lot about Aavegotchi as you might have noticed from my profile. It’s hard not to for an amazing project like that. Other than that, I’ve written more factual pieces for a range of platforms, from NFT marketplaces to loan platforms, but these have been white-label. What is your usual writing routine like (if you have one?) I write when I’m not swamped with legal work. (If any of my bosses see this - no hate! I do like what I do.) I wake up early, around 6am, and find that I write the best in these quiet hours. I make myself a cup of iced coffee and just get to it. Being a writer in tech can be a challenge. It’s not often our main role, but an addition to another one. What is the biggest challenge you have when it comes to writing? Mainly it’s about finding the time to do it, and finding a way to frame what I write well. I find that framing takes the longest time to do, because I want to make sure what I write is accessible and can be easily understood. Software and systems are the backbone of most organizations. When an application fails or a system is breached, it can lead to dire loss and harm. While that may be stating the obvious, what isn’t always clear is how to protect assets as you develop and field new solutions. In our remote reality, the stakes have never been higher. As more organizations adapt and adopt AI and machine learning to compete and prosper, there’s an even greater need to adopt a ‘security as code’ philosophy to ensure security issues don’t derail your plans to scale new solutions. That’s what DevSecOps is all about: discovering and dealing with security concerns early in the software development process to avoid expensive fixes and risky outcomes. At Modzy, we want our software engineers (Dev), security experts (Sec), and operations team (Ops) in sync across the development lifecycle. So we embraced DevSecOps early and built our practice around the three tenets of information security: Confidentiality. Integrity. Availability. Here are five best practices that can make all the difference in your success. 1. Non-production environments should be considered ephemeral Practice makes perfect. Or more accurately, perfect practice makes perfect. By regularly re-paving our non-production environments, we gain a couple things. First, we practice deploying and configuring our entire stack from scratch on a regular basis, quickly identifying areas that we have yet to incorporate sufficient automation. Second, we clear out any cruft that is no longer relevant to ensure that we aren’t ignorantly reliant on something from past without any documentation. There is nothing more frustrating that promoting code to a new environment, only to find out it doesn’t work because something about that environment was slightly different than the environment it came from, and there’s no discernable reason why. Ultimately the goal is to ensure the Integrity of our applications. So we prove to ourselves on a regular basis that we know exactly what we are deploying by wiping everything out and re-deploying from scratch with what we believe is necessary to run our product. 2. Nothing should be promoted or deployed except by automation Similar to the previous best practice, this helps us ensure the Integrity of our product. Each promotion or deployment is done in a way that can be audited and does not rely on a human following a checklist perfectly every time. It also helps us preserve Confidentiality of our environments because humans no longer need privileged access to environments to do the deployments. If you’re doing your development in the Cloud, Confidentiality can be further preserved by using completely separate accounts for dev, test, and prod, further limiting the access that humans have to those environments. For us, this gave us the freedom to grant more access to people in our dev environment (because we can re-pave it regularly) and no access at all to our test and prod environments outside our DevOps staff and automation tools. 3. Practice defense in-depth You must take offensive and defensive action to truly protect your systems and secrets. Waiting until the tail end of development is risky business. It’s often costly and insufficient. Instead, increase your advantage by shifting your approach. Consider the implications along each step of the process and how adverse events during that step could compromise security later on. 4. Empower developers to be as self-sufficient as possible We love our developers. All the process and security constraints that we are talking about must be done in a way that does not adversely affect our development team’s ability to move fast, experiment and test new ideas, and ultimately develop features quickly. 5. Educate yourself and find inspiration When we were considering our own process, we were influenced by a number of sources. First, we drew from our own experiences, of things that went well or went poorly in the past. Next we asked present and former colleagues about their experiences. We also surveyed blog articles, conference talks, and other writings or presentations on the topic to try and benefit from others’ experiences. Personally, I always enjoy listening to talks from engineers at Netflix or Google or Amazon or others that have had to solve problems at a complexity and scale that I have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing myself. The hard-earned wisdom that is shared by those engineers can be invaluable, letting you learn from difficult challenges without having to experience the challenge yourself. We also drew inspiration from what some might consider to be an unlikely source. For the past few years, the US Air Force has been compiling a list of best practices and recommendations for implementing a robust DevSecOps practice and has published a . reference design While some aspects of the design are specific to the Defense Department, the recommendations to achieve a secure delivery process are widely applicable. They served as a great starting point for us as we considered our own process. Ultimately, the combination of bringing together your development, security, and operations teams and keeping discrete parts of your infrastructure separate and siloed are keys to establishing a strong DevSecOps practice for your organization.

I would be lying, if I did not acknowledge the "historical blame" lies mostly at the feet of developers for the belief coders are single points of failure. Too many software developers built ivory towers of code for the sake of job security. Too many businesses were held hostage to custom algorithms only a handful of people could decipher...perhaps only ONE person could! Your Developer is not a Single Point of Failure An answer on how to prevent this and not get taken advantage of by unprofessional or unethical developers launched many software development methodologies, design patterns, and project management careers. This blame drove most small and even medium-sized businesses to outsource development, integration and automation to consulting firms and contractors. An on-staff developer became a very expensive luxury for most businesses. There was just too much overhead to supporting development within the business. Nonetheless, the on-staff developer when properly engaged and managed still remains an incredible luxury. The synergies which are possible with on-staff development are marvelous. Nonetheless, properly managing a developer can be difficult. There are many things which can make management difficult, and the most damaging are unethical developers holding businesses hostage to their spaghetti code algorithms. However, in 2020 it is far too easy to prevent this from happening. What I wrote in " " details many of the other causes of the situation and most of them can be characterized as developer mismanagement. Your Developer is not a Single Point of Failure In any case, businesses moved on from this blamestorm. Businesses put the management of mercurial coders into the hands of others. Even honest and ethical developers who worked themselves into obsolescence realized many businesses could not support the need for endless development of new algorithms without the business case to do so. They went out and started tech consulting firms. Of course, this scenario solved all the problems too. No, it did not solve them! Automating businesses and writing code even for the low-code/no-code platforms is still happening. Things have gotten very very complicated in unexpected ways. The costly overhead of hosting an on-staff developer has been eliminated in many businesses, yes. Unfortunately, this has been replaced by costly outsourcing contracts to consulting firms and complex configurations and processes related to enterprise-level software packages. The long-term licensing and subscription costs of these low code/no-code platforms rather than owning the code is costly as well. Despite the complexity, there are some very simple actions to prevent a business from being held hostage to on-staff or outsourced developers.  One must understand the technologies involved, but only at a high level. Such understanding can be gleaned by asking the correct questions. What language is being used? What operating systems, platforms and/or clouds are being leveraged? How is your business' data being stored and backed up? Where is the source code and how does it get built and deployed to "production"? The business should be operating its own source code repository for all the source and configuration code the business requires to operate. Annually, but more often at first, an audit to make sure the source code builds and builds to deployable and functional software. The costs of test-driven development become more justified when such builds become complicated disasters which breaks production. Also, the business should be operating its own data backups and understand how to do a restore. There should be some redundancy of staff or contractors on these fronts to make sure the business is not held hostage to one individual's or firm's knowledge, be that code or configuration. There is no doubt the low code/no-code solutions have made significant in-roads into 21st-century businesses. Software and hardware have become sufficiently modular to allow for smart people to put together workflows without code. Once these workflows are hooked up, business can be done and profits banked. Often, there are gaps which are filled via sneaker net and an Excel CSV. With so many outsourcing firms and an excess of technology workers, this business model worked fairly well, but times have changed. These cloud platforms and ERP systems are development eco-systems unto themselves. Their arcane configurations become the tribal knowledge of some on-staff person OR the business is constantly hiring ERP consultants. Also, there always seems to be a need to build out the last 5-10% of some workflow automation or business process implementation with a little script or code to "duct tape" things together. The challenge now is to identify where there is "code" or configurations your business is dependent upon. This is one reason why the business needs some kind of related to tech issues and support.  Having a means you have a central location for all the "problems" or support calls happening internally. Even if you are opening support tickets with different vendors a central location for the business to see open tickets across systems and departments is an absolute necessity. This will help the business identify systems needing closer attention as well as possible "customizations" (in code or configuration) which require support. central tracking system ticketing system Finally, creating or refreshing the business' disaster recovery plans should reveal all that remains. A disaster recovery plan is essential in today's uncertain environment. A dependency on cloud technology helps mitigate this, but there can still be regional outages. Can the business easily rotate to another AWS region for example to keep critical business systems up? Can the business move cloud-based technologies to a different vendor? Can any of these systems be operated "off-cloud" or are they completely dependent upon large-scale connectivity? Creating a disaster recovery plan is probably the most difficult part of preventing the business from being held hostage to a developer, contracting firm, ERP vendor or cloud platform. Having the source code and doing periodic builds is vital. Having redundancy among staff or contractors to support the code, configuration and data also helps. However, it is the disaster recovery plan which will pay the most dividends. The disaster recovery plan can take some time to put together, but the work is very much worth it. The act of creating a "shadow version" of your business' workflows and systems will not only serve as insurance against fire, earthquake, unexpected cloud outages, but reveal the guts of the technical framework the business rests upon. During the disaster recovery plan, the business will need to identify back up developers, product owners and system specialists. If there is no "on-staff" back-up, hiring contracting firms on retainer is becoming more common.  Hiring another contracting firm to help disaster recovery analysis can make a lot of sense, though it will cost more money. Paying for the licensing to allow for a complete rotation of your business to a "shadow system" can reveal many unexpected costs as well. This is where having an on-staff developer can pay real dividends. The on-staff developer can serve as a repository for MUCH of this information. Earnest developers managed by earnest leadership will always deliver more than outside mercenaries. Unethical or poorly managed developers will not, whether they are on staff or not. The earnest developer will be transparent about where the source code is and how to build it. The earnest developer will understand the need for a disaster recovery plan and will help create the necessary redundancies. The truly earnest developer will even work with a contracting firm in these efforts.  The contracting firm can then act as the developer's backup in case of unexpected absence related to illness, injury or ... they just want a REAL vacation. I am terribly sorry, but it is the 21st century. This means "knowledge workers" are VITAL!!! Good "knowledge workers" are not stupid which may be the source of some friction between management and technical staff. If leadership treats knowledge workers poorly there can be consequences. This gave rise to so many contracting firms. Knowledge workers can build silos of technical knowledge holding the business hostage, but frankly so can contracting firms and enterprise platforms. Understanding the technical foundations of the enterprise and how it supports the business model is not optional in the 21st century. SOMEONE on-staff needs to have an overarching view of this landscape. They do not need to understand all the minutiae of the underlying technical framework, but they MUST understand how to create redundancies to buffer the business against change and disaster. All businesses in the 21st century are tied to some technical framework and implementation. Surely some businesses are SO simple, like running a taxi service, a big tech firm can encapsulate the entirety of the technical model and then just plug humans into their "matrix" of a business model.  A company like Uber or Lyft is a perfect example of this version of doing business in the 21st century. Nonetheless, most businesses still have "uniqueness" to their way of doing business. In fact, it is this uniqueness which can create a market advantage, but also the dreaded situation of having the business held hostage to ONE developer or contracting firm's technical silo. However, a ticketing system, adequate source control, annual build audits or better yet the creation of a disaster recovery plan makes it far more difficult for this terrible situation to occur. Do these things and the business will be stronger and more resilient to change. In addition, the business will be better engaged with its knowledge workers whether they are on staff or not. This synergy between leadership and technical personnel is incredibly powerful.
