Low cost and high profit, they are great at informing and entertaining us. Meanwhile, however, in consequential ways they are beggaring those who provide the content and the users who consume that content. The top platforms are richly paid to channel advertising. To us. The Web has evolved into a massive, and massively profitable, advertising engine. As such, the Web now might be (and is becoming) seen as a form of de facto feudalism, digital imperialism, and digerati aristocracy. The attention of us billions of serfs is the product sold to advertisers. No coercion there. More like… seduction. Note, this critique does not imply a call for legislation or government regulation. Imagine how worse off America would be today if Congress and our regulators had effectively deported the headquarters of the big Web success stories, like Google, to Europe or the Pacific? The need for a savvy legal and regulatory environment is something that legislators, regulators, and the ethical actors within the industry (like Dixon) all agree upon. Yet Washington has thus far proved mostly thrown, acting like the primates upon encountering the monolith at the beginning of . 2001: a Space Odyssey We’re at the precipice of deporting Web3 and its associated power, prestige and wealth. That may be about to change. Snow’s seminal understand that the “physical scientists” (which would include software engineers, notwithstanding that software is, so to speak, metaphysical) among whom I count myself as a very lesser figure do not really understand the “literary intellectuals” (among whom I also count myself in a very minor way). The Two Cultures And The Scientific Revolution This misunderstanding causes a terrible disconnect. As Snow reported, in 1959: “They have a curious distorted image of each other. Their attitudes are so different that, even at the level of emotion, they can’t find much common ground.” This can be countered… if the blockchain thought leaders know how to adopt an effective approach. Challenges and Future Prospects One of the top challenges and bottlenecks that the StarkNet ecosystem may face is competition. Many other layer2 scaling solutions in the market are striving to compete with StarNet and they are more advantageous in some respects than StarkNet. Therefore, continuous innovation and improvements are needed to attract more developers and users. A second potential issue is the network effect. As StarkNet is a relatively new technology, it requires a significant influx of developers and users to establish a strong network effect. Effective marketing and promotion efforts are thus necessary. Another challenge that StarkNet faces is ensuring the sustainability of its ecosystem. With the emergence of competitors and technological advancements, StarkNet needs to continuously innovate and provide attractive features to maintain user loyalty and attractiveness. Additionally, StarkNet needs to establish solid relationships with developers and partners to foster ecosystem development and growth. For example, some projects are developing zkEVM on top of StarkNet, such as Warp and Kakarot, which is a showcase of the strengths of Cairo and StarkNet. Overall, we believe that StarkNet has greater potential in areas such as fully on-chain (FOC) games, contract wallets, cross-chain communication, and on-chain AI because its technical features and innovations bring critical advantages to these fields. , StarkNet’s high-performance and low-cost features make it an ideal choice. By bundling multiple L2 transactions into one transaction on Ethereum, StarkNet can distribute transaction costs among other transactions in the same batch, reducing costs. Definition of Key Terms 2.1. The Internet It is relevant and helpful to a discussion on Net Neutrality to understand exactly what the Internet is – and note that there is little substantive difference in these definitions: The Internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies. -Wikipedia An electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world —used with the except when being used attributively. - Merriam-Webster Dictionary The Internet is defined as a network of networks and there is no mention of hardware, network owner, or content provider. There is no single ruling body of the Internet. See Appendix A. In technical terms, we can say the Internet is by definition hardware, network, and content agnostic. These three ideas are fundamental to the internet to provide both forward and backward compatibility. The Internet does not care whether a given network uses fiber, copper or satellite. The Internet does not care whether a given user is using a Mac, PC, Smart Phone or an automated water sensor in a farmer’s field. And for purposes of prioritization, the Internet protocols treat all packets of a given type equally – regardless of content, source, or destination. This paper will use the following definition, which includes reference to the IP protocols that define the technical standards of the Internet: The Internet: A global system of public and private networks, a network of networks, which is hardware, network and content agnostic and based on the Internet Protocol Suite. 2.2. Net Neutrality And, of course the definition of Net Neutrality is seemingly fundamental to any discussion of Net Neutrality. Yet almost immediately we see variance in the definitions: Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers treat all data on the Internet equally, and not discriminate or charge differently by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication. - Wikipedia The idea, principle, or requirement that Internet service providers should or must treat all Internet data as the same regardless of its kind, source, or destination. - Merriam-Webster Dictionary In this researcher’s opinion, both these definitions seek to express similar ideals, but neither fully succeeds on a technical level. The Wiki definition includes a broad range of internet experiences that one might argue should not be included in a practical definition - like “user” or “method of communication.” Both these aspects are superfluous to a definition of Net Neutrality. By way of illustration, the current system already tiers costs based on the type of user (ex: corporate vs. consumer or private vs government) and it tiers costs based on things like satellite vs terrestrial communication methods. The Merriam-Webster definition hits much closer to the mark, however due to the technical nature of this discussion, I have changed the term “kind.” As discussed later, there is some prioritization of data on the internet based strictly on technical specifications of TCP/IP, and the use of the term “kind” may overlap with that discussion where the terms “type” and “kind” are often used interchangeably. Therefore, to avoid confusion, for purposes of this paper we will use the following modified definition of Net Neutrality (substituting “content” for “kind”): Net Neutrality: The idea, principle, or requirement that Internet service providers should or must treat all Internet data as the same regardless of its content, source, or destination. 2.5. Internet Society – ISOC The internet has grown organically, with standards that are open enough that anyone may participate, while being well defined enough that engineers can design hardware and software with confidence. Although there is no formal governing body of the Internet, the protocols that define the Internet are defined and agreed upon by an international consortium of groups, the largest of which is the Internet Society (ISOC). Within the ISOC and the other global standards groups are various open-membership advisory groups, standards groups, and definitive naming and allocation groups for things like domain names and IP addresses that require global consensus in order to operate correctly. See Appendix A. The group primarily responsible for establishing the technical standards of the Internet is the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) [9]. Net Neutrality, the Internet and the Internet Society

Much has been said lately about the wonders of Large Language Models (LLMs). Most of these accolades are deserved. Ask ChatGPT to describe the General Theory of Relativity and you will get a very good (and accurate) answer. However, at the end of the day ChatGPT is still a computer program (as are all other LLMs) that is blindly executing its instruction set. It understands the General Theory of Relativity no better than your favorite pet. Unfortunately, we use “human-like” words to describe the techniques engineers use to create them - for example, “machine learning” and “training.” This is misleading because an LLM does not have a mind like a human. There is a certain irony here - how can a non-thinking chatbot correctly summarize the findings of the smartest man to ever live? To understand this contradictory nature of LLMs, let’s explore them further in terms of Strengths, Weaknesses, and Dangers to see how we can use data, and a storage solution like MinIO, to exploit the first and mitigate the other two. These are techniques that every engineer should have in the back of their minds as they train, test and deploy LLMs for their organization. The Strength The strength of LLMs is that they are trained to understand the probability distribution of words in the training set used to create them. If the training set is sufficiently large (i.e. a corpus of Wikipedia articles or public code on GitHub), then the models will have a vocabulary and a corresponding probability distribution that will make their results appear as if they have a real-world understanding of the text they output. Let’s examine another example in more detail - this time from Philosophy. Ask ChatGPT the question, "What does ‘cogito, ergo sum’ mean and who wrote it?" and you will get something similar to the text below. "Cogito, ergo sum" is a Latin philosophical proposition that translates to "I think, therefore I am" in English. This statement is famously associated with René Descartes, a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist. Descartes expressed this idea in his work "Discourse on the Method," published in 1637. The phrase reflects Descartes' attempt to establish a foundational truth that cannot be doubted—the certainty of one's own existence as a thinking being. LLMs produce results like this using probability distributions. It works something like this, they start by looking at the text in the question and determine that the word “Cogito” has the highest probability of being the first word of the answer. From there, they look at the question and the first word of the answer to determine the word that has the highest probability of being next. This goes on and on until a special “end of answer” character is determined to be of the highest probability. This ability to generate a natural language response based on billions of probabilities is not something to be feared - rather, it is something that should be exploited for business value. The results get even better when you use modern techniques. For example, using techniques like Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and Fine-tuning, you can teach an LLM about your specific business. Achieving these human-like results will require data and your infrastructure will need a strong data storage solution. Not only can these next-token prediction capabilities be used to generate great text for your chatbot or marketing copy, but they can also be used to enable automated decision-making within your application. Given cleverly constructed prompts that contain a problem statement and information about APIs (“functions”) that can be called, an LLM’s understanding of language will enable it to generate an answer that explains what “function” should be called. For example, on a conversational weather app, a user could ask, “Do I need a rain jacket if I’m going to Fenway Park tonight?” With some clever prompting, an LLM could extract the location data from the query (Boston, MA) and can determine how a request to the Weather.com Precipitation API could be formulated. For a long time, the hardest part about building software was the interfacing between natural language and syntactic systems such as API calls. Now, ironically, that might be one of the simplest parts. Similar to text generation, the quality and reliability of LLM function-calling behavior can be aided with the use of fine-tuning and reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF). Now that we understand what LLMs are good at and why, let’s investigate what LLMs cannot do. The Weakness LLMs cannot think, understand or reason. This is the fundamental limitation of LLMs. Language models lack the ability to reason about a user's question. They are probability machines that produce a really good guess to a user’s question. No matter how good of a guess something is, it is still a guess and whatever creates these guesses will eventually produce something that is not true. In generative AI, this is known as a “Hallucination.” When trained correctly, hallucinations can be kept to a minimum. Fine-tuning and RAG also greatly cut down on hallucinations. The bottom line - to train a model correctly, fine-tune it and give it relevant context (RAG) requires data and the infrastructure to store it at scale and serve it in a performant manner. Let’s look at one more aspect of LLMs, which I’ll classify as a danger because it impacts our ability to test them. The Danger The most popular use of LLMs is Generative AI. Generative AI does not produce a specific answer that can be compared to a known result. This is in contrast to other AI use cases, which make a specific prediction that can be easily tested. It is straightforward to test models for image detection, categorization and regression. But how do you test LLMs used for generative AI in a way that is impartial, fact-faithful and scalable? How can you be sure that the complex answers LLMs generate are correct if you are not an expert yourself? Even if you are an expert, human reviewers can not be a part of the automated testing that occurs in a CI/CD pipeline. There are a few benchmarks in the industry that can help. GLUE (General Language Understanding Evaluation) is used to evaluate and measure the performance of LLMs. It consists of a set of tasks that assess the ability of models to process human language. SuperGLUE is an extension of the GLUE benchmark that introduces more challenging language tasks. These tasks involve coreference resolution, question answering and more complex linguistic phenomena. While the benchmarks above are helpful, a big part of the solution should be your own data collection. Consider logging all questions and answers and creating your own tests based on custom findings. This will also require a data infrastructure built to scale and perform. Conclusion There you have it. The strengths, weaknesses, and dangers of LLMs. If you want to exploit the first and mitigate the other two, then you will need data and a storage solution that can handle lots of it.

Analyzing the Pros, Cons, and Risks of LLMs

Over the past 7 years, I’ve had the opportunity to build onboarding for 3 . In this article, I outline the general approach that I worked out to improve onboarding. If you are just getting started with onboarding, this guide can help with breaking into it. mobile apps Why working on onboarding is cool To craft a strong onboarding, you should build a deep understanding of your product and how it brings value to customers. You build empathy for the product. By talking to customers both existing and new you step into their shoes and get perception of the problem the product solves. You build empathy for customers. their Working at the top of the funnel means that even small improvements in onboarding significantly affect all the following metrics, such as feature adoption, monetization, and retention. Your impact on business is huge. The first impression matters. If onboarding doesn’t bring new customers to their first moment, they leave (and hardly return ever again). Your impact on customers is also huge. a-ha! New customers don’t come out of nowhere. Some circumstances brought them to the product. Working with marketing to understand those circumstances gives you a bigger picture of the environment you operate in. You get a glimpse of life before the product. Hopefully, your product will have a steady flow of new customers. You either bring them to the moment during the very first session or not. You don’t have to wait weeks to measure that. It is very rewarding. You get feedback fast. a-ha! How to approach onboarding There are lots of questions you need to answer when you start working on onboarding. It is hard to pinpoint a specific order because they kind of enrich one another. Luckily, going through them is very fulfilling. What is the current goal of onboarding? How did this goal come about? How do you measure progress against the goal? Well, it’s a good set of questions when approaching any problem, not just onboarding. You want to understand what is the status quo and how a company wants to move it. How does the product retain customers? Forget about onboarding for a second. You want to know which product features are the most popular by measuring the share of all customer base using those features. You also want to know which of the features retain customers better by measuring what percentage of customers tried a feature once and then used it again over time. Popular features with the best retention rates represent the value that the product brings to customers. Unpopular features with high retention rates are potential gems that a company hasn’t yet realized its product hides. How do customers perceive value? Numbers give you a bigger picture of where your product excels. But you want to know what exactly is the benefit that customers get from your product. Preferably in their own words. I know of two ways to do it. You want people to walk you through the job that the product gets done for them. Ask how they first encountered the problem, how they solved it before discovering the product, what made them look for another solution, and what result they got from using the product. Customer interviews, in-person or over Zoom. Essentially, it is a qualitative method that strives to quantify product/market fit by asking But it’s the following questions that give you real insights. Product/Market fit survey by Sean Ellis. How would you feel if you could no longer use the product. uncovers how customers perceive the value they get from the product and what language they use to describe it. What is the primary benefit that you have received from the product? gives you a customer profile in customers’ words. What type of person do you think would benefit most from the product? Now that you know what features of your product retain customers and how customers perceive their value, it is time to take a step back and check whether the existing onboarding’s success metric matches that. Often, the effectiveness of onboarding is measured with conversion rates into registrations or subscriptions. While these metrics are important to business, they alone hardly predict whether a customer will stay with a product. Instead, you want your onboarding metric to be a strong indicator of future retention. How is the current onboarding doing? You have come a long way to understand how your product gets customers’ jobs done and what is the best way to measure it. It’s finally time to work on onboarding! But before reinventing the wheel, assess the existing onboarding against your findings. Are there any low-hanging fruits? Sometimes, simply removing superfluous steps will get you first wins. What should ideal onboarding look like? Simplifying onboarding will only get you this far. Achieving exponential growth might require rethinking the whole thing or parts of it from scratch. And it’s not always about making onboarding as quick and simple as possible. Often, you want new customers to provide you with personal data or preferences to enable the full experience afterward. Making sure customers understand how each step of the onboarding flow is bringing them closer to solving their problems is the key. Conclusion Every product is unique either in the problem it solves or in the customer segment it targets. There is no silver bullet for onboarding customers. Fortunately, if you went through all of the steps above you probably know about your product’s onboarding more than anyone else. Which makes you the best candidate to tackle the challenge! To wrap things up, remember onboarding doesn’t end with the first session. Each new feature might require its own onboarding tailored to a new context, completely different from that of a new customer.
