Few franchises are as confusing as the X-Men franchise, but that doesn’t take away from how amazing the movies are (most of them anyway). The series has been going on since 2000, and most of their movies aren’t numbered, so it can be hard to know where to start or what entry comes next. So, to help with that, here are the X-men movies in order of release date. P.S. This list will only cover the core X-Men movies to make it less confusing for beginners. This means that only the movies that drive the main plot further will be included. So, the Deadpool movies, the New Mutants, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Logan won’t be included. Dark Phoenix 1. X-Men (2000) The X-Men had been popular for decades, especially in the 90s, and it culminated with them getting their first Hollywood movie in 2000. It starred a fairly unknown Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and seasoned acting veterans Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellan as Professor Xavier and Magneto. Through fate, the lonely wanderer Wolverine finds himself joining the X-Men and becoming a reluctant hero. There, he’ll team up with other heroes such as Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey. 2. X2 (2003) Mutant distrust is at an all-time high after a mutant attacks the White House, and unfortunately, the X-Men are caught in the crossfire. The main person leading the crusade against mutants is Colonel William Stryker, and he won’t stop until they’re all dead and buried. Separated and with their backs against the wall, the X-Men will have to turn to an old foe if they want to take down Stryker. But even though he hates mutants, Stryker seemingly has a past with them, specifically, with Wolverine. As the X-Men and Magneto work together to take down the Colonel, Wolverine has his own side mission: to discover how he and Stryker are connected. 3. X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) News breaks out that there is a serum that can take away one’s mutant powers, which, of course, catches the attention of all mutants, including Professor Xavier and his school of mutants, and Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants. Although the serum is optional for any mutant who wants it, Magneto and his Brotherhood are certain that this is only the beginning. That in the near future, mutants will be forced to take it. Lines are drawn within the mutant community, and they go to war with each other. In the middle of all this is a mutant child. He has the power to take away other mutants’ powers, and it was because of him that the serum was able to be made. As long as he’s alive, the serum will always be available, and so the X-Men take a last stand to protect him against Magneto. 4. X-Men: First Class (2011) Although we had seen the X-Men in three different movies before, we still didn’t know a ton about them such as how they were formed, why, and how Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr came to know each other. Well, X-Men: First Class answers all of those questions and some that you didn't even know you had. The first iteration of the X-Men come together to take down former Nazi Sebastian Shaw as he pulls the strings of the U.S. and the Soviet Union. His ultimate goal is for both countries to wage nuclear war against one another. Charles, Erik, and their rag-tag team of mutants do everything they can to stop him. 5. The Wolverine (2013) You might be wondering why the first and third Wolverine movies aren’t included on this list but the second one in the trilogy is. I know; it’s kind of a confusing thing to do. However, the other two movies can be watched in a vacuum; they give more insight into the Wolverine character, but they don’t necessarily have much to do with the X-Men team itself. The Wolverine movie is special in that it directly deals with the aftermath of X-Men: The Last Stand. And on top of that, it leads right into Days of Future Past. 6. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) The past and present clash in Days of Future Past. After everything they have fought for, the X-Men have failed, and their worst nightmare has come true. Mutants are persecuted, hunted down, and killed by robots called sentinels. It is a grim, apocalyptic time, but not all is lost. They have one shot to make things right, and the only man right for the job is Wolverine. He gets sent back in time to the 70s to stop the sentinels from ever being created. There, he’ll meet up with the younger versions of Professor Xavier, Magneto, Beast, and more as they fight to prevent that ugly future from happening. 7. X-Men Apocalypse (2016) The X-Men have saved the world from the Sentinels, but a new threat emerges. Maybe new isn’t the right word considering this person is from ancient Egypt. We’re talking about Apocalypse, one of the first mutants ever. He has awakened in the present, but he’s disappointed in the modern world and plans to restructure it in his image. It’s up to the X-Men to stop him, and who’s a part of the line-up? It’s a mix between veterans such as Beast and Raven along with newcomers Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Quicksilver. 8. X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) Jean Grey has always been one of the strongest X-Men, so it’s a good thing she’s on our side. However, after a mission goes awry, she awakens the Phoenix Force within her. With Jean becoming even stronger than she already was, it’s up to the X-Men to not only protect her from herself but from others such as Magneto. Technically, this isn’t the final film in the franchise as The New Mutants was released a year later, but that could be watched in a vacuum. However, the vast majority of these articles are either too "Hello World"-like or focus more on tools, while missing the key point — how to write unit tests that are useful and deliver the most value? TDD approach In this article, I'll share some best practices, which I believe will get your unit tests to the next level. This will be an example-driven article as in my view, this is the best way to explain things in programming. Cassie Cage The daughter of Earthrealm heroes, Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage, it was destiny for Cassie Cage to be a powerful fighter. Having a Special Forces officer as a mother, and being a descendant of ancient warriors really does wonders for someone’s fighting skills; with Cassie having the best skills of both of her parents. Following in the footsteps of her mother, Cassie also joined the Special Forces and has become the leader of the new generation of Mortal Kombat heroes. How strong she is has never been more clear than at the end of Mortal Kombat X when she has to go against the Elder God, Shinnok; an Elder God is one of the highest, most powerful beings in the Mortal Kombat universe. When it came down to the wire, Cassie had to fight Shinnok to save Earthrealm and won. This puts her on an elite list of fighters who have successfully beaten an Elder God, a list that includes her father and her best friend, Jacqui Briggs. 4. Kronika The most recent final boss of the series, Kronika is the Time Keeper of the Mortal Kombat timeline; meaning that the entire course of the universe is in her hands. This puts her above the status of an Elder God, and in fact, she is the mother of Shinnok and Cetrion, another Elder God. Kronika’s goal in Mortal Kombat is to restart the timeline to evenly balance the universe, so that good and bad battle each other forever. Controlling the timeline itself, Kronika sounds pretty strong. So, why isn’t she higher on this list of the strongest Mortal Kombat female characters? Because she doesn’t do anything spectacular. In a game about killing people, she killed no one. Although to be fair to Kronika, she did at least restart the timeline; only to be killed by Fire God Liu Kang. 3. D’vorah Although she isn’t a big boss in the Mortal Kombat games, D’vorah might as well be; considering that she has taken down numerous fighters. D’vorah is a humanoid insect who has appeared in the most recent Mortal Kombat games. What makes D’vorah stand out is that she isn’t evil just for the sake of being evil, everything she does is to ensure the survival of her hive; it doesn’t matter to her which side of the coin she’s on. Apart from the survival skills that she’s acquired for her and her race to survive, D’vorah is also a powerful fighter. She’s only been in two games, but the amount of long-standing Mortal Kombat characters she has killed is pretty high. Mileena, Baraka, and even Scorpion have died at the hands of D’vorah. Although Scorpion did beat her in a 1-1 fight, she snuck up on him and stabbed him with poison. 2. Kitana One of the most popular Mortal Kombat female characters, Kitana has been a powerful fighter since her introduction in Mortal Kombat 2. Kitana has fought for a long time to make Outworld a better place and to bring peace between Outworld and Earthrealm, often fighting against her sister Mileena to do so. She’s always equipped with her fans and has proven on more than one occasion to be a deadly fighter. In Mortal Kombat 11, she went head to head against her adopted father and the series’ biggest villain, Shao Kahn. In the end, she would kill Kahn, become ruler of Outworld, and successfully unite Outworld’s different species. Not many people can say that they have beaten Mortal Kombat’s big baddie, putting her in a tier alongside Liu Kang and Raiden. 1. Sindel Speaking of Kitana, this list would be incomplete without mentioning her mother, Sindel. Although her backstory is convoluted because of retcons, the one constant is that she’s always been a strong and unique fighter. With the ability to use banshee-like screams and her living hair, Sindel can stand toe to toe with any Mortal Kombat fighter. In Mortal Kombat (2011), she is revived to help Outworld invade Earthrealm, and she deserves the Outworld MVP award because she turned the tides of war fairly easily. Without breaking a sweat she killed Smoke, Stryker, Kabal, Jax, Cyber Sub-Zero, Jade, and Kitana. Eventually, she would be killed by Nightwolf, but he had to sacrifice himself for it to work. For the cherry on top, in Mortal Kombat 11, she would also defeat an Elder God; just in case killing eight characters wasn’t enough for you. The 5 Most Powerful Female Characters in Mortal Kombat

What if I told you The X-Men can make you a better software tester? Well they can’t but their supervillain, , can. William Stryker This article is all about how to improve your unit tests using mutation testing. There are several mutation testing frameworks but the framework I’ll be talking about is called , aptly named after the supervillain from X-Men who wants to kill all of the mutants. I’ve been using Stryker for over two years now, in those two years I’ve implemented Stryker on three large enterprise projects and given several presentations on the framework. Stryker Caution! I want to start this article with a warning, mutation testing is not for the faint of heart. At first, it’s tedious, time-consuming and often drags out the testing phase of development, often requiring developers to write even more unit tests. Why even bother with it? Because it is a foolproof way to ensure your unit tests are actually providing value. Every developer has seen a unit test that looks great but actually doesn’t test anything or simply exists to provide code coverage. These are the tests that mutation testing exposes. It’s the cherry on top for unit tests, the pick of destiny, any rockstar tester isn’t a true rockstar unless they have mutation testing checking their unit tests. Now that you’ve been warned let’s get into the details. Photo by on MAYANK D Unsplash What is Mutation Testing? The simple one sentence answer is . What does this mean? Mutation testing is done through a framework, like Stryker, that will mutate or change, specific parts of your code and check to see if that mutation causes a unit test to fail. If the mutant causes one of your existing unit tests to fail the mutant is considered “killed”. At the end of the mutation testing, a report is generated with a full list of killed and surviving mutants, similar to what you would see in a code coverage report using Jest or Jasmine. mutation testing is testing for your unit tests A Simple Example Let’s say you have some code that is generating a URL for an application. Hopefully, there is a unit test checking that URL path and ensuring it gets generated. The mutation testing framework would come in and mutate your endpoint to a null or empty string. What happens to your unit test? If it fails that’s good, it means your test is smart enough to know what the URL should be and the mutant will be considered killed. If your unit test doesn’t fail that means your unit test isn’t quite as good as you thought. The framework will list the mutant as survived and you’ll need to go back to the drawing board to write a better unit test. Below is an example of what a string mutation would do: String url = "deadpool.com"goTo(url) //mutated codeString url = ""goTo(url) Mutation Testing Frameworks is an open source mutation testing framework that has a very active development community. When I started using Stryker two years ago the framework was only available for JavaScript but it has continued to grow over the years and is now available for JavaScript, TypeScript, Scala, and C#. It has a CLI tool available for quick and easy setup and plays nicely with common testing frameworks like Jasmine and Jest. I have also used for Java, the mutation testing concept is the same but the framework is more console based. While each mutation testing framework may vary slightly the concept remains the same and the important thing is to just start using one. It can be difficult to kill certain mutants and having to rewrite unit tests is never fun. Over time the benefits are worth it though and just like anything in life the more you practice the faster the process will become. Pro’s Higher quality unit tests No more writing pointless tests that only serve to boost a metric (like code coverage) More confidence that your application is fully tested Fewer production defects More bugs caught Opportunity for developers to receive instant feedback on the quality of their unit tests Stryker runs in parallel so it can run very fast if the resources are available Con’s Adds an extra step in the development cycle Can take over an hour to run against a large codebase on a machine having four cores or less Configuration can be tricky to figure out if the CLI generated configuration doesn’t work for your project Conclusion Mutation testing still seems to be a rarity amongst developers but hopefully, this article has encouraged any developers reading to give it a shot. The setup may be slow and the first mutants may take a long time to kill but the more mutants killed the faster the process will become. Short of Wolverine offering unit testing tutoring, Stryker and mutation testing is as close as you can get to the X-Men improving your unit tests.

Improving your unit tests with help from the X-Men

Microsoft with the HoloLens promises to change our lives. The problem is that, in the field of technology, not always the good intentions have turned into successes. In this article, we try to understand how much HoloLens could change our habits. HoloLens is a PC-independent unit with an integrated holographic processor unit (HPU). The HPU manages the data collected by the many sensors lightening the load on the CPU and GPU. When we start looking around with Hololens, they constantly map the environment. The operating system is obviously Windows 10, so the start menu is the Start menu of the above system. To get the hologram of the Start menu we need to execute the gesture “Bloom”. To execute the Bloom we hold the punch and then open our hand (for basic principles of HoloLens let click ). here This is where the first perplexities begin. The Bloom is not always recognized by the system and it may happen that it is necessary to repeat it more than once. The Start menu is one of the few holograms that is not placed in relation to the environment. It follows the gaze. We can instead anchor the application windows, such as the browser, to a wall of the room we are in. You can run up to three applications simultaneously. Fixing windows to the wall is like having several virtual screens in various parts of the room. To click one of the Start menu items, place the cursor moving your head (“gaze”) and perform the gesture called “Air-tap”. This gesture is very intuitive because it simulates the use of touch screens. HoloLens allows you to bring an object displayed on a desktop PC outside the display. In this way, the object floats in the air and you can move it with the mouse in the real environment! Good is the ability to modify the design elements of a lamp or a car, overlaying them to the real product to test its impact. There are many interactions between users and holograms as well as between holograms and real environment. For example, you can create a robot and drive it into your room among the furniture. Moreover, you can create a ball that can bounce on the floor. We can also play a soccer game with the holograms that kick the balls on our table or on our floor (without the risk of breaking our ornaments!). You can take pictures of the environment as it appears in mixed reality. This feature has a great potential in prototyping. In fact, it is very useful to share experiences through photos or videos of what’s being created. The environment mapping of HoloLens can be useful to create apps. For example a 3D scanner app. HoloLens is able to create a 3D (not very accurate) model of our room by “looking at it”. This functionality is “spatial mapping”. Of course before to consider it as a 3D scanner there is a bit of road yet to go. There is also the ability to impart voice commands without the classic “Ehi Siri” or “Ok Google” addressing commands. HoloLens can also be used as a PC extension. For example, Holographic Workstation uses HoloLens to create 3D real-time financial data holograms. A three-level system allows traders to interact with large amounts of data in a 3D and 2D combined environment. The user can share information with other HoloLens holders. Interesting is the ability to use HoloLens even sitting at PC. This offering an integration with traditional tools. There are many design-oriented applications such as NASA Mars. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory uses Hololens to help scientists on the Mars projects. The images captured by Mars Curiosity Rover and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter are displayed on the HoloLens. It provides a mixed reality view where virtual objects can appear along with real ones, recreating the Martian setting in the room. Designers working on the next Mars rover use HoloLens to view their 3D plans in scale, before any real manufacturing. It’s very interesting the use of HoloLens for rover design. Coming back down to earth there are also applications for architectural design. An example is a planimetry you can extrude, rotate and scale to the desired size. You can enrich the models with a lot of information, images, and videos floating in the air. The models can be placed anywhere in the room and you can make selective viewing of some layers. You can ask for an overview as well as look at the interior of individual environments. You can enlarge the model until you find yourself inside. You can also make changes directly to the hologram. Anyone who has worked or works in the 3D field knows how uncomfortable is to manage a model on the traditional screen. Remaining in the field of architecture, we also find applications in interior design. For example, the user can see his new kitchen at the design stage. Moreover is possible to enter in the new virtual kitchen even overlaying it on the real kitchen. The user has the ability to change the furniture in the design, shape, and color. The user can also change the color of the walls, add or remove elements and decide their size. HoloLens can record the user’s experience. The application creates reports showing the parts on which the user has focused more and the parts that the user liked more (the “feeling”). In the same way, the user’s commentary words statistics (spoken during the experience) can be shown. This is an effective application for both design and marketing. Stryker uses HoloLens for the design of operating rooms. Physicians and nurses, with HoloLens, can preview how the operating room would be design. It permits to understand in advance any changes to make. In this way is possible to achieve the highest level of efficiency, comfort, and operation. There is another company, the ThyssenKrupp, which uses the HoloLens for the design of lifts for the disabled. These are examples of companies who strongly believe in HoloLens. Interesting is the use by Japan Airlines that uses HoloLens to train its mechanics. Exists an application for the performance analysis of PGA Tour golf tournament players. The golf course is displayed in 3D and you can ask for statistics of any tournament player in a specific hole. You can display the trajectories of individual shots and compare the various players. Who has never wanted to analyze the performance of the PGA tour participants? All joking aside it seems a very powerful tool for industry professionals. But I do not really know how much the use of HoloLens can be in this case an added value. Noteworthy is the use of HoloLens by Cirque du Soleil in the design of the show scenery. People in different parts of the world can work together in front of the same virtual stage. It is as if they are all in the same theater. An application that is the case of saying “spectacular” that can be used for other forms of entertainment as well. To conclude, it seems obvious that this is a technology at the dawn but with really important potentialities. Its success will depend greatly on the type of applications that will be developed. The current applications are in part fun toys and partly designed to provide the basis for future important applications. We hope that the futures HoloLens applications will revolutionize the world of current technologies.
