Today, perhaps more so than ever, anything Elon Musk touches appears to become instantly newsworthy. The same sentiment certainly applies to Musk’s ambitious satellite broadband project, . Slated for a future IPO, it seems that the company that’s operated by SpaceX has undergone significant growth in a matter of months - leaving investors guessing at the scale of the stock market debut that’s on the way. Starlink Only at the beginning of the year, it seemed like Starlink’s subscriber growth was slowing down, paving the way for potential problems when the company’s eventual IPO landed. To break the numbers down, between January 2021 and January 2022, SpaceX added an average of 11,000 new Starlink subscribers per month. Despite this, growth slowed to around 5,000 subscribers between November 2021 and January 2022, with the total number of subscribers growing from 140,000 to 145,000 within this time frame. Given that SpaceX was intent on reaching 500,000 total global subscribers by the middle of 2022, it seemed as though Starlink was underperforming the company’s expectations. As Musk continually spoke of and tweeted about the importance of freedom of speech throughout the platform, it became increasingly clear that the purchase represented something of a passion project for the man who shot to fame as the co-founder and CEO of Tesla. But what does the move mean for another of Musk’s fledgling ventures, Starlink? Twitter for a generous $44 billion Musk has harbored some lofty ambitions across his companies, and perhaps none have the potential to be more impactful for the world than Starlink, which promises to deliver comprehensive broadband internet coverage via a constellation of satellites operated by SpaceX. However, the purchase of Twitter has dominated news cycles since the shock takeover attempt took place. Given the company’s stock market performance since going public, it’s fair to say that Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) will require plenty of attention in order to become a consistently profitable venture. As we can see from Twitter’s price over the past 12 months, the stock has undergone a 23.55% decline in value, owing in no small part to mass investor sell-offs as inflation began to reach record-breaking levels in the second half of 2021. The internet is not perfect. It can be censored, surveilled, and controlled by a few private corporations or governments. However, there have been projects that have attempted to correct this and others that are laying the groundwork for achieving it. When we talk about decentralizing the internet, we usually only think about the layers of software, but we often forget about the infrastructure itself. In the end, no matter how decentralized your blockchain and your Dapps are, to access them you have to go through an ISP. One of the most famous attempts to decentralize the internet infrastructure was . It was an app for mobile devices that allowed people to communicate without an ISP connection or cellular service by using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals. The app became popular in Hong Kong during the Umbrella Movement protests in 2014, when it helped protesters communicate with each other without being monitored by authorities. FireChat Another example is - a project for building decentralized satellite networks for connecting rural areas to the Internet without relying on expensive ground infrastructure or government subsidies. Even though Starlink is centralized by being owned by a private entity, this project is paving the way of what a decentralized internet infrastructure could be. Starlink Another point in favor of Starlink is that is owned by a freedom and decentralization advocate that we all know, Elon Musk. Elon's recent purchase of Twitter was driven by his desire to make the platform open-source and decentralized. This has shown that he is a true advocate for freedom and decentralization. Thus, we could expect Starlink to be the project that will decentralize the internet on a global scale, or at least set the groundwork for new, truly open and free alternatives that might be driven by a DAO. On the other hand, we have FireChat, an app that enables people to chat without using the internet, cell towers, or wifi. It uses bluetooth and wifi to connect devices. The idea behind it was to create a chatroom for people who don't have access to a data plan or internet connection. It has been used by protestors in Hong Kong, who were protesting the proposed bill that would have allowed extradition of suspects from Hong Kong to mainland China. They used FireChat as a way of organizing protests and communicating with each other while avoiding being monitored by the Chinese government. The way in which FireChat works is by creating a peer-to-peer mesh of devices and it uses the chips and technology available in the mobile devices we already have. A peer-to-peer mesh networking means that it does not rely on centralized servers to provide or relay network traffic, so it can work in a lot of different situations when there is no ISP or we want to avoid connecting to one. WiFi, 5G, the internet itself, and other advancements or concepts like FireChat show that we are getting closer to more affordable ways of decentralizing the internet. I see the decentralized internet in a similar light as the idea of decentralization in general. There are many applications that can be built on top of a decentralized platform, such as government itself or better solutions to day-to-day necessities of humanity that are currently being provided by private entities for profit. With a really decentralized infrastructure, we can have all those solutions in a democratic and decentralized way.

From FireChat to Starlink: The Best Attempts to Decentralize the Internet

Recently, SpaceX launched Starlink in Portugal. So, naturally, our CTO got one for Altar as soon as the pre-orders opened. A couple of weeks ago, the sleek satellite dish finally arrived. In no time at all, Claudio and a couple of devs from the team had unboxed it and set it up in the garden outside our offices. Fast forward to today, and he's had the opportunity to use Starlink, as well as run some tests. Here's the full rundown of those tests, in Claudio's words, starting with his initial impressions Starlink Unboxing & First Impressions Inside the large grey Starlink packaging, you’ll find: The Starlink, motorised, satellite dish – connected to a 30-meter (100 foot) Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) cable A metal tripod stand A power adaptor A small metal Wi-Fi Router with its own PoE cable. The initial set-up was incredibly simple: Click the dish into the tripod mount, plug the PoE cables from both the router and the dish into the power adaptor, plug it into the wall socket, download the app and you’re ready to go. The hardware is well designed, especially the metal Wi-Fi router, which looks like it’s been freshly carved out of a Cybertruck. The dish itself is plastic mounted on a metal pole. The PoE cable is permanently attached to the dish. I feel this last part is worth noting – without a way to easily detach the PoE cable from the dish, you could face having to replace the whole dish if the cable gets damaged. To run it out of your house you’re looking at either drilling a hole in the wall or permanently leaving a window open as the cable is quite thick (7mm) and includes an even thicker ferrite bead (19mm). The app is also well designed, with the consistent UX you would expect from a company like SpaceX. The seamless setup continues here with no login requirements – keeping the experience truly “plug and play”. This brings me to the crux of this article, the internet tests. Starlink Setup & Internet Tests To cut a long story short, Starlink offers a moderately fast, if somewhat inconsistent, broadband connection – under the right circumstances. I initially set up Starlink in the garden outside our offices. Despite the fact there were no obstructions directly above the dish, the garden is located in the centre of the building, and is surrounded on all sides. This was enough of an obstruction to mean that I wasn’t able to connect to the internet using Starlink (after 30 minutes of adjusting the dish positioning). It’s worth noting here, however, that Starlink’s value proposition is not for inner-city use. Rather, its goal is to bring high-speed internet to rural areas. So, I packed Starlink back up, popped it in the back of my car and headed home to run some further tests. I set Starlink up in my garden initially, 5 meters away from the house. Despite it being much more of an open space vs. the office, the height of my house (~7 meters) still obstructed the satellite dishes view. So, once I had run all the intended tests, I moved Starlink to an open field with no obstructions and repeated my tests. Aside from the placement of the dish (garden/obstructed & field/unobstructed) I kept all other aspects of the testing parameters the same. Here are the results: Testing Information SpaceX Services, Inc. ISP: 217.65.138.***. External IP address: Access to 1700 Starlink satellites orbiting at 550km of altitude, operating downlinks between 10.7Ghz and 29.1GHz. 2m Distance between Device (Android 11 Smartphone) and Access Point WiFi: -62dBm  (Good) RSSI: -80dBm (Good) Noise: using the Native Android Application. Method used: Ookla SpeedTest A Speed Test estimates the available capacity of the network between the client and the server. The throughput of the tests depends on the distance between the 2 endpoints (Round Trip Time), meaning the closest server will give the most accurate results. The Ookla app automatically chose my server. Per the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Recommendation, I executed the tests at randomly selected times throughout the day (including peak and offpeak time). Test #1: Throughput (Downstream, Upstream) Using the Native Ookla Application, I took 31 measurements at random intervals over two days against the fastest nearby server (automatically selected by the Ookla app). Here are the throughput results for both the obstructed and unobstructed conditions: Once I had completed the throughput tests, I moved on to test Latency & Timeouts. Test #2: Latency & Timeouts For this test, I carried out a continuous measurement over 260 mins. The goal here was to measure the number of timeouts that occur under both the obstructed and unobstructed scenarios. In the obstructed scenario (in my garden, 5 meters from my ~7 meters tall house) I observed 576 timeouts over the 260-minute test. Meaning, there was the chance of an outage every minute: In contrast, in the unobstructed scenario (open field) I observed 47 timeouts over the 260-minute test. Now, the chance of an outage had reduced to once every ~5 minutes: Key Takeaways There are no two ways about it, for optimal connection, where you position the dish is paramount. In an unobstructed scenario, I had no problem working using Starlink. I was able to keep a database connection most of the time, whilst streaming Spotify, downloading files and browsing the internet. In an obstructed scenario, however, it was almost unusable for work. There were simply too many outages. My connection was interrupted too often, my database connection was unstable and I often had to refresh web pages and wait before they would work. That being said, for normal smartphone usage, there were no noticeable differences between the obstructed and unobstructed scenarios. By “normal smartphone usage” I mean music/video streaming and using social media/chat apps). In terms of power consumption, Starlink runs at about 100W – although this can vary if the dishes motors are active. I haven’t observed any overheating or thermal issues with any of the kit parts and the dish seems to sit at a comfortable 23ºC – 25ºC when in use. Is Starlink a True Competitor to Rural Cable Broadband? In rural areas with a good internet infrastructure (basic fibre optic for example), Starlink can’t compete at this time. In areas where minimum cable broadband connections are unstable, however, is where Starlink starts to compete. The other bonus of Starlink is the fact it doesn’t come with a contract. Therefore, if you’re heading to a rural area temporarily (where a 24-month contract wouldn’t be worth it)  then it may be work installing a Starlink kit. After all, once you’ve bought the kit it’s yours, and although you can’t resell it, if you don’t end up using it, it could make a nice (if very expensive) coffee table. Wrapping Up Starlink is a remarkable feat of engineering and SpaceX’s ability to turn it into a consumer product is impressive. That being said, traditional cable companies won’t be overthrown by Starlink any time soon. Firstly, it carries a hefty price tag. The equipment costs €500 plus an added monthly service fee of €99 here in Portugal. It’s a lot to pay for, in the best-case scenario, the reasonable broadband speeds with inconsistent connectivity and large swings in latency that Starlink offers. Perhaps this will change as SpaceX launches more satellites. We may well see it work better when surrounded by tall trees or buildings, but that remains to be seen. However, I do believe that the traditional telecom companies should take note of Starlink. The execution of the product and the hype and excitement of a democratised internet connection should serve as a warning. A warning that people don’t want to be tied down to a 24-month contract just to get a decent internet connection – and that disruption is coming. When I first came to know about Starlink, an internet service that will take the world by storm, I was unsure why we need it. I felt Elon Musk is trying to create an ecosystem at layer so he can overtake the so-called os/app layer ecosystem by Google and Apple, and become the lord of data. That could be true, but the fact is Starlink is really going to disrupt the internet because it is faster and readily available. the physical SpaceX plans to host around 42,000 Starlink satellites in space to bring its internet service to not only every corner of the world but to airplanes, RVs, and other remote locations. Starlink only managed to send its 27th batch of satellites. These satellites were launched into low earth orbit (LEO) using the Falcon 9 rocket. The company uses Falcon 9 rockets to send 60 satellites in a batch and now has satellites in space, ready to function. The most recent batch of 60 satellites was sent last Sunday, on May 10, completing a record tenth liftoff of the reused Falcon 9 rocket. It was the eleventh Starlink mission of this year. over 1442 SpaceX has made much progress. The company has started signing up beta testers and has already across the US, UK, and Canada. After spending $500 for the equipment that includes a flat dish and antenna, and $99 per month for service, he's now experiencing over 100 MB of download speed and upto 25 MB of upload speed. According to Rendel, his previous internet service provider wasn't even close. After being able to host zoom meetings and watch movies, Rendel , "This is a game-changer. It makes me feel like I'm part of civilization again." said Beta-testers are a speed of 200Mbps, and 150Mbps even in areas of Canada. According to Elon Musk, users will enjoy up to 300Mbps by year end. This will be a huge advantage over traditional submarine cables as these cables have a refractive index of 1.5 approximately. 500km 20ms Currently, the fastest Hibernia transatlantic direct cable between New York and London has a latency of . Starlink having lower latency makes it ideal for online gaming, video calling, and time-sensitive financial operations. Starlink can theoretically achieve latency as low as 5ms. 60ms A senior engineer at SpaceX, Kate Rice, had a little something to say as well. In the live stream of one of the missions, she said, "As we launch more satellites, install more ground stations and improve our networking software, data speed, latency and uptime will all improve dramatically." Starlink: Risks and Reviews The company says that the current 500,000 registrations are easily manageable, and the $99 deposits are refundable if the service does not work. The company believes the number though is manageable but solving the network congestion would be a problem once we get into serving millions of users. While it looks like it is all planned out and going well for Starlink, many industry analysts had different opinions about the future of Starlink. , "Like any network, Starlink is going to enjoy rave reviews while it is underutilized. However, it will be challenged with the same congestion issues as their peers once they grow their base." Jim Patterson stated This is what John Byrne, a telecom analyst at global data, had to say about the new service, "There will always be early Starlink adopters who think that anything from Elon Musk is cool. But it's hard to see the satellite trajectory keeping pace with the improvements coming with cellular." While these concerns do make sense, with Elon Musk's success in the past, he is keen on bringing Starlink to its destination as well. SpaceX is preparing to deliver high-speed internet to the world by sending about 30 thousand satellites into the Earth's orbit. Elon Musk's company started work on this project in 2018, the project cost is estimated to be around $10 billion
. America's private space company SpaceX succeeded in bringing 61 satellites to the Earth's lower orbit. The satellites were sent into space via a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Center in Florida on Saturday. These include 58 Starlink Satellites and 3 Skysat Satellites. US-based businessman Elon Musk's company is building a StarLink satellite network to provide high-speed Internet to the world. SpaceX and Planet Lab together raised the cost of this launch. Three satellites of Planet Lab have also been sent to Orbit. Its SkySat satellites provide live updates of selected locations on Earth. Through them, photos of selected places can be taken 12 times in 24 hours, so that events can be monitored there. Starlink is the next-generation satellite network. What is SpaceX's Starlink Project? - A Brief Summary

By developing Roadster first, then Model S and X, and eventually to more affordable Mode 3, we were able to concentrate our R&D resources on solving the toughest problem early on. So my plan for Starlink will follow similar patterns and basically consists of: master plan for Tesla Create the first Starlink terminal for professionals, which would necessarily be a bit bulky and expensive to use Use that money to build a consumer terminal that can be installed on people’s rooftop and offer competitive broadband rates Use that money to build a low cost and high volume mobile phone (StarPhone) Build out an interstellar communication system that will support Mars and beyond Starlink’s initial plan starts with professional users such as government, military, oil & gas, and shipping fleets. But recently I see signs the second step “consumer home Internet access” can come much earlier and might even be concurrent with the professional customers. There are a few reasons behind this. We learned quite a few lessons from previous unsuccessful attempts by Iridium and GlobalStar. Their satellite deployment was too slow, constellation too sparse, customer acquisition too narrowly focused on the professional market, and they lost the narrow window of opportunity to compete against land based cellular carriers. This time around, technology and economics have both improved. Our SpaceX rockets have slashed the price of launching by more than half: . Our Starlink Satellites are designed for mass production and much cheaper. And we reduced the complexity of our user terminal by initially focusing on a pizza box sized device instead of handheld phones. $150M for a maxed out Falcon Heavy compared to our closest competitor at $400M However, the economy of satellite to consumer Internet service is far from proven: the window of opportunity is still narrow, the deployment cycle is still quite long and somewhat unpredictable, and the mobile carriers are racing ahead with 5G on earth. So what will we do? Fast and furious deployment We have a boatload of satellites to launch, 12,000 (with possible later extension to 42,000), and we have to be fast. By clever engineering, we can fit 60 satellites into each Falcon 9 launch vehicle and we plan to launch as often as every 4 weeks. Once our Starship is ready, we can launch as many as 400 satellites at a time. Back on earth, our SolarCity team will be able to install customer terminals on their rooftop. If installed together with Tesla solar panels, we can achieve energy positive for the entire Starlink system since all our satellites are solar powered. Offer a better service to the under-connected Starlink will be able to provide a first class Internet service to the developing world where a large portion of the world population is not yet connected. And everyone on the planet can enjoy the same level of high speed Internet service at roughly the same cost regardless of where they live. Sharing I mentioned ridesharing in our of Tesla, but we will go a step further for Starlink. We will soon start a refundable deposit program in order to secure your user terminal and early access to the service. Better still, that deposit will make you not only a user of the Starlink service but also an owner of the Starlink project. Your deposit will be used to fund the satellite launches and build-out of the Starlink constellation. Master Plan, Part Deux In addition, your rooftop terminal can serve as the local hub to provide Internet service to your neighbors and you can make money while you sleep. In a way we are enabling you to become a mini Internet Service Provider, just like you can resell your surplus Solar energy back to the electricity grid. Every Starlink user’s terminals will be able to connect in a mesh to each other using laser or high frequency radio waves, so the constellation is both in the sky and on earth. And we bought a good brand name for it, EarthLink, from a now defunct ISP company. My friend Jack at Twitter has been a fan of decentralization and we are exploring new ways their team’s learnings can be applicable to Starlink. To Mars and beyond We skipped the StarPhone part, since it is purely a miniaturization effort. But Mars is clearly in our oversized vision. We are already testing the laser link between v1.0 Starlink satellites to form a mesh network, which will pave the groundwork for our Mars expedition. We envision a continuous flow of passenger and cargo spaceships (named StarFleet), as well as many intermediate drone space stations between earth and Mars (named SpaceBarge) to form an Interstella mesh network. This will enable our Mars pioneers to be always connected between the planetary colonies. And my hope is that, after successfully colonized Mars, you and I will be even more appreciative of earth and use the technology we learned from Mars to make earth a even better home. Unlike the late summer of 2023, when I still felt a sense of optimism from people amid Ukraine’s counteroffensive, I now saw the great pain and sorrow among many Ukrainian soldiers on the frontline. Even if Ukraine were to prevail on the battlefield, would it be a true victory if the greatest Ukrainians who died fighting for a free Ukraine were no longer there to see it? Many soldiers often spoke of the need to continue the fight to avenge their fallen brothers. Ukraine’s future liberation will have been paid with the greatest price: the blood of some of the bravest human beings I have ever met in my life. Ever since the Western media hype surrounding Ukraine’s counteroffensive subsided after the summer of 2023, followed by US aid to Ukraine being stalled in Congress and then the fall of Avdiivka, I have personally seen interest wane from both the American public and the Ukrainian diaspora in the US. Chatter about Ukraine on different volunteer channels to which I belong is getting rarer by the day. This is likely because the most committed volunteers work directly with units now, while others have simply lost interest. When times are most difficult, we must be more vocal and work harder than ever. We cannot rest or let adverse circumstances dispirit us. The soldiers on the frontline have no choice but to fight, and they cannot rest, so people abroad who can make a difference must step up. What greater power and value can one achieve than supplying soldiers with life-saving equipment? My close friends Alina Holovko and Oleksandr Dovhal and I – all three of whom also volunteered with me in Bakhmut while the city was under active Russian siege – continued our work of helping Ukrainian soldiers. Over the years since the full-scale invasion, we have delivered dozens of drones, generators, Starlinks, and medical supplies, among other critical needs. Drones: Eyes in the Sky When I go to Ukraine, upon arriving at the front, I always deliver personal gifts of drones to soldiers. At times, some friends will help purchase drones. Most recently, a close friend from South America bought a $2,000+ DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone, which I took with me. As a South American who previously lived in Ukraine, where some of Russia’s early atrocities occurred at the start of the full-scale invasion, he is more patriotic about Ukraine than many Ukrainians I’ve met in the Ukrainian diaspora abroad. With several pieces of luggage packed with drones, I made my way to Dnipro via train from Poland, changing trains three times over two days of travel. I spent time with drone units on the frontline in both Donetsk Oblast and Zaporizhzhia Oblast. For each unit I visited, I delivered either a DJI Mavic 3 drone or a new attack drone. I later received a message from one soldier that their senior commander was “happy like a little boy” when he saw the new model of attack drone I had given them, as they previously only had older models. The importance of individuals and volunteers sourcing drones for soldiers can’t be understated. A senior Ukrainian military official recently said that Ukraine was holding off Russian advances with “crowdfunded drones” that are primarily being sourced by volunteers and military units themselves. Vasyl Shyshola, a commander in an aerial reconnaissance unit from the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade, also pointed out that it is a necessity for units to have social media. Shyshola said, “If you want to source more drones from people on the internet, having a high-quality social media channel is vital.” The more engaging content that soldiers can capture on the battlefield, such as first-person view (FPV) drones blowing up Russian positions or heavy armor, the more visibility it gets – and, ultimately, donations will flow to buy more drones. Danilo Makarov, a drone pilot from the 108th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, told me that you can no longer fight a battle without having a drone above. The drones that operate in the sky give commanders a complete battlefield view and can guide their men from an aerial perspective. Without a drone above to warn soldiers of enemy movements or to help guide an assault, the soldier is a “dead man walking.” Kostyantyn Mynailenko, a commander of an aerial reconnaissance unit in the Liut (“Fury”) Brigade, said, “We are on the frontline 24/7, and we must have a permanent feed from the front streaming from our drones. The drone visuals must never end.” Liut Brigade The first drone unit that I spent time with was the Liut Brigade, an assault brigade of the National Police of Ukraine. Following Russia’s first invasion in 2014, Ukraine transformed its loyal local police, militias, and volunteers from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts (regions) into special-purpose units, specializing in assault operations. The majority of the men from Liut to whom I spoke were former police officers or police special forces. As Russia advanced into their home regions, they left the occupied territories to fight for Ukraine. I had a chance to sit down with Kostyantyn Mynailenko for an interview at his unit’s base near the front in Donetsk Oblast. Kostyantyn had been fighting in the Ukrainian army for several years before the full-scale invasion. Originally from Sieverodonetsk, which is now occupied by Russia, he took his family at the start of the invasion and evacuated them to safety, but came right back to the fight. “On the opening night of the invasion, we had some Russians roll into the city in heavy armor and we quickly were able to take them prisoners.” Our interview was often interrupted due to a constant stream of phone calls, as emergencies required urgent response on the frontline. I tried asking a variety of questions to elicit any encouraging news from him. The other men in the unit would occasionally add to the conversation, but their faces did not lie and the tone in their voices was all-permeating. It was visible that the war had taken a great toll on them. Although the men of the Liut Brigade have lost many close friends and loved ones throughout the war, their sense of loss and outrage is not confined to their comrades. They speak of Russia’s brutal assault tactics, which require the Ukrainians to gun down waves of Russian soldiers that charge at their positions in meat-grinding warfare. When asked about morale in the Ukrainian army, Kostyantyn looked up at me and said, with sadness in his voice, “We’ve lost many, many guys.” He said that he is not impacted by the news in the West or by what is going on with US aid. “I don’t follow the news closely; it doesn’t interest me that much. I am on the front, and I have my guys to be worried about every day. They have a stable supply chain sourced directly from China. We have to order our Chinese drones from Europe indirectly and then bring them to Ukraine.” He also spoke of the need for some sort of victory to motivate the Ukrainian soldiers. When we first came up with our “big idea” back in 2017, my partner Mike Wagner and I didn’t know how much impact it would have. The idea was simple enough: We wanted to develop a virtual appliance that could discover, provision, and maintain servers from any manufacturer. By 2020, that vision became a reality with the launch of our flagship platform, which we built entirely on open-source technologies. That strategy was working well from the start. Well enough, I should say. We knew we could improve our metal-as-a-service software appliance if we could just find a way to boost performance, ensure higher system uptime, and streamline the architecture. The only way to do that, we realized, was to replace the Linux operating system and KVM virtual machine solution with something that would give us those benefits. What we did know was that we wanted to continue with our strategy of utilizing open source—and ideally tied to a very permissive license and open governance model. That would give us more flexibility as our roadmap unfolded and enable extensive use and modification without stringent (or murky) conditions. Taking the plunge After our due diligence, we transitioned to the Unix-like open source FreeBSD operating system, along with the BSD hypervisor Bhyve. We liked that the FreeBSD project had off-the-shelf capabilities within a single distribution, and had plenty of mission-critical enterprise use cases (Netflix and Sony being two of the most well-known). Together with existing technologies like the Redfish standard, the new and improved platform we’d built (called Mojo) was ready to really take off. With FreeBSD and bhyve fully in place, we were now able to add edge data center provisioning to the platform, which helps discover, configure, and provision bare metal servers and storage within a data center and at the edge. It works really well with another new technology (PhotoISP, which I’ll discuss in a moment) to manage geographically distributed bare metal assets. These open-source changes to our infrastructure proved to be the silver bullet we were looking for. More organizations began to contact us, and we started landing some really interesting use cases, including Major League Baseball. Before the 2021 season, MLB was looking for a way to move from VMware to a containerized environment across 30 data centers. In a nutshell, they needed a way to quickly process 15 different input sources to track all the player and team statistics generated during a game. By more quickly provisioning servers, that data could be quickly gathered at the edge and uploaded into Google Cloud. The Mojo platform, backed by an evolved open-source strategy, helped streamline MLB’s deployment pipelines (cutting deployment time in half). It also simplified the provisioning and management of MLB’s bare metal edge sites and made it really easy to provision Anthos, BIOS, firmware, OS patches, and upgrades. They also saw big performance gains for their GPU-enabled apps and more optimized CI/CD pipelines. Expanding a vision backed by open source Albert Einstein once said that necessity is the mother of all invention. My family lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and when COVID hit, word spread quickly that several teachers and students were unable to stream their classes because they had insufficient rural broadband access. Mike and I brainstormed about how we could help, and we immediately recognized how Mojo, paired with a reliable and secure CPE, could solve the problem. That led development of the Photon ISP platform, which delivers routing, firewall, and QoS through the open-source FreeBSD operating system. It also monitors IDS/IPS for wireless and fixed fiber networks and ensures uninterrupted 4G/5G and Starlink failover as a hedge to wireless ISP services. Today, the Photon ISP platform has 50 rural customers, and that number continues to grow. And its uptime is unparalleled; we have FreeBSD CPEs that have been running for more than a year without issue. Speeds have been very consistent, streaming content has been reliable, and there has been almost zero latency. We’re still pushing the limits of what we can do with our optimized open-source infrastructure. Next, we plan to finish moving the remainder of the stack to FreeBSD once a viable OCI-compliant stack becomes available. In the meantime, we still use Linux within Bhyve virtual machines for a few of our services. Simply put, the strategic shift to open-source FreeBSD and Bhyve for our platforms has catalyzed innovation and customer growth. The success with MLB—cutting deployment times and improving performance—is a great example of how the right open-source pieces can have an outsized impact while being far more flexible (not to mention cost-efficient!) than proprietary alternatives. NASA and SpaceX have both been hit with setbacks this month. Astrobotic Technology, a Pittsburgh-based company with a $108 million contract from NASA, has abandoned plans for a soft landing on the moon with its Peregrine Mission One lunar lander after the lander experienced critical propellant loss due to a fuel leak shortly after liftoff, making the scheduled moon landing on Feb. 23 impossible. This setback is a disappointment for NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, which aims to reduce the cost of lunar lander development and comes at a time when NASA is facing delays in returning astronauts to the moon. At the same time, SpaceX has been forced to scrub its launch of a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station due to weather concerns. The Falcon 9 is being launched to deploy a batch of 23 Starlink internet satellites. In addition, SpaceX lost its last Starship after it exploded in midair due to what founder Elon Musk said was the venting of extraneous liquid oxygen. SpaceX’s massive, reusable Starship rocket conducted two test flights in 2023, the first in April and a second in November, and company representatives now say the third such mission could come as soon as Feb. 2024. These incidents demonstrate that even in 2024, mankind’s effort to conquer space through space technology is still wrought with difficulties and challenges. They serve as poignant reminders of the formidable technical and logistical challenges involved in everything from launches to lunar landings. Despite the tremendous progress made in space exploration, rocket launches and lunar missions continue to demand meticulous planning, cutting-edge technology, and unwavering precision to ensure a safe and successful journey to the moon's surface. The legacy of the Apollo program lives on as a testament to human ingenuity and determination, inspiring future generations to tackle the ongoing complexities of lunar exploration. Landing humans on the moon during NASA's Apollo program in the late 60s and 70s was a remarkable feat, especially considering that the computers used at the time possessed significantly less processing power than our smartphones. Despite the advancements in technology over the past five decades, successfully launching rockets as well as landing on the moon remains an extraordinarily challenging endeavor. When SpaceX transports Starship to the launchpad later this year for its third trial, a crucial aspect of testing will involve assessing the spacecraft's capability to transfer super-chilled rocket fuel while in space. NASA has placed its reliance on SpaceX to transport astronauts to the lunar surface as part of the Artemis III and IV moon missions, for which SpaceX holds a $4.2 billion contract. To achieve this mission, SpaceX must first master the complex process of refueling a Starship while it is in low-Earth orbit, subsequent to its initial launch from Earth. This challenging procedure is referred to as "cryogenic propellant transfer" and has never been attempted before in the conditions of microgravity. During SpaceX’s media teleconference last week, this topic was discussed as well. In 2021, NASA selected Starship as its crewed lander for Artemis 3 — the vehicle that will carry two astronauts to the surface of the moon and then back up to lunar orbit once their stay is complete. But because rockets and spacecraft burn through most of their fuel while escaping Earth's deep gravity well, a massive vehicle like Starship would need to be refueled in orbit before continuing to the moon. The efforts by NASA and SpaceX to achieve perfection is laudable as we seek to extend our influence beyond the bonds of Earth and establish a human presence on the Moon and eventually Mars.
