How to Create a Springboot Project

In this article, we'll explain how to create a CI/CD workflow for a SpringBoot Application deployed to Kubernetes using Skaffold. It is a known fact that developing applications with Kubernetes is cumbersome. That is the reason there is an ecosystem being developed around it so that developers can focus on what matters most to them i.e. writing code. On that note, in this article, I will be covering another tool Skaffold developed by . Google So what exactly is Skaffold? Skaffold handles the workflow for building, pushing and deploying your application. What problem it is trying to solve? As I said earlier developing applications with Kubernetes is not such an easy task and that’s where Skaffold comes into play as it eases the development and deployment of your applications running on Kubernetes. It manages the entire workflow and you get instant feedback while developing and deploying your application locally or on a remote Kubernetes cluster. Following are some of the benefits of using Skaffold. Lightweight It’s is a client-side utility only so there is no cluster set up or anything to maintain. Easy to share It’s very easy to share among your team members as you only need to do the following to get started. git clone
skaffold run Ease of development To get your application containerized even locally you have to do a lot of things. For your local development, you might be doing something like building, pushing, and then deploying your application on Kubernetes. And there are a different set of commands (docker blah, kubectl blah blah, etc.) and the tools you use for each of these phases of your workflow. With Skaffold you just have one magical command skaffold run or skaffold dev and you are golden. This doesn't mean you don't have a dependency on those tools that require you to build and deploy applications to Kubernetes. It's just that development is a lot easier when you just run a single command. OK. Enough theory let’s get started. Anatomy of the SpringBoot Application In this tutorial, I will be using a SpringBoot application which when accessed via /states REST endpoint shows Indian states and their capitals. Now, I am creating an ecommerce app. I wanted to deploy it for free in AWS and explore Devops more. AWS is perfect for that, as most of the popular sites like Netflix, Linkedin, Facebook all use it, as it is best for scaling for billions of people. Let’s get started. A few years ago at an agile demo a stakeholder made a special appearance. The team was closing in on a minimum viable product. The demonstration focused on sound effects and animations. The team revealed a configurable animation board to demo the effects quickly. The experiences were easy to launch consecutively; isolated and variably configured. The animation board did not depend on the larger system but the intention was to tie each animation in later. While the team demoed, the stakeholder asked if the animation board could be evaluated for further experimentation. With this feedback the team noted the value and quickly wrote down what to explore next. Of course, this wasn’t the first time the team used the technique. Other similar discoveries were made during previous demos. The team was aware the feature isolation and containment was incredibly powerful both for their demos and for product value. unrealized For us as engineers, naming things is really hard. Harder still is how to communicate things. To the above story, there exists no vocabulary to describe the effort of execution. There is no description for the iterative containment orchestration in . software engineering So this is what I am to propose, a definition to describe the unique execution with its benefits and drawbacks. Developing and demoing in containment is an example of what I call the . springboard pattern Let’s describe what the pattern is. What Is The Springboard Pattern? There are many approaches based on neural networks, where an ANN using huge amount of images learned to recognize the type of given scene (for example, a kitchen, a bedroom, etc.). For this case several datasets are available. One example is [11], but it does not specify locations, so this and similar datasets are not usable for our task. However, our classification problem is different. We want to train an ANN able to recognize a particular location (for example “Springfield-EverGreenTerrace-742- floor2-bathroom”), which can me recorded by camera from many angles (typically, some object can be occluded by other objects from some angles). One approach using ANN to solve this task is described in [1], there convolutional networks were used. The difference to our approach is on the one hand in the extraction and usage of video images, on the other hand in types of ANN layers. Another approach is described in [4]. The authors propose a high-level image representation, called Object Bank, where an image is represented as a scale-invariant response map of a large number of pre-trained generic object detectors. Leveraging on the Object Bank representation, good performances on high level visual recognition tasks can be achieved with simple off-the-shelf classifiers such as logistic regression and linear SVM. There are many approaches based on neural networks, where an ANN using huge amount of images learned to recognize the type of given scene (for example, a kitchen, a bedroom, etc.). For this case several datasets are available. One example is [11], but it does not specify locations, so this and similar datasets are not usable for our task. However, our classification problem is different. We want to train an ANN able to recognize a particular location (for example “Springfield-EverGreenTerrace-742- floor2-bathroom”), which can me recorded by camera from many angles (typically, some object can be occluded by other objects from some angles). One approach using ANN to solve this task is described in [1], there convolutional networks were used. The difference to our approach is on the one hand in the extraction and usage of video images, on the other hand in types of ANN layers. Another approach is described in [4]. The authors propose a high-level image representation, called Object Bank, where an image is represented as a scale-invariant response map of a large number of pre-trained generic object detectors. Leveraging on the Object Bank representation, good performances on high level visual recognition tasks can be achieved with simple off-the-shelf classifiers such as logistic regression and linear SVM. Video Scene Location Recognition Using AI: ANN-Based Scene Classification

Hey Hackers! It’s Jose here. I’ll be taking over Tech What the Heck this week while Sheharyar is out. So, get strapped in because we have a lot to talk about. Adobe vs the U.S. If you’ve ever used Adobe, you know that their products are good but their subscription method is god awful. It’s too expensive, especially for freelance beginners and hobbyists. $60 a month is just too much for people who are either doing it for fun or don’t have enough experience to get paying gigs. If you want to make the argument that Adobe is for professionals and you should only start using it when you’re years into your freelance career, then okay; I’ll concede that point. However, my other problem with Adobe’s subscription is far more serious: It’s extremely predatory. And I’m not the only one who thinks so; Uncle Sam does too. Adobe recently got sued by the U.S. government for harming consumers with their subscription model and their cancellation method. Here’s an excerpt from the complaint filed against the company: “For years, Adobe has harmed consumers by enrolling them in its default, most lucrative subscription plan without clearly disclosing important plan terms. Adobe fails to adequately disclose to consumers that by signing up for the “Annual, Paid Monthly” subscription plan (“APM plan”), they are agreeing to a year-long commitment and a hefty early termination fee (“ETF”) that can amount to hundreds of dollars. Adobe clearly discloses the ETF only when subscribers attempt to cancel, turning the stealth ETF into a powerful retention tool that by trapping consumers in subscriptions they no longer want. During enrollment, Adobe hides material terms of its APM plan in fine print and behind optional textboxes and hyperlinks, providing disclosures that are designed to go unnoticed and that most consumers never see. Adobe then deters cancellations by employing an onerous and complicated cancellation process. As part of this convoluted process, Adobe ambushes subscribers with the previously obscured ETF when they attempt to cancel. Through these practices, Adobe has violated federal laws designed to protect consumers.” To break it down for you, the U.S. government is alleging that Adobe is hiding secret fees and only springing them up on their customers when they try to cancel their subscriptions. They’re specifically talking about Adobe’s “annual, paid monthly” subscription plan; which is supposed to be the cheapest of the three plans. If you look at the screenshot above, you will notice that it says a fee will apply if you try to cancel it after 14 days. Any normal person would look at that and go “Oh, the fee couldn’t be more than a couple dozen dollars.” But nope. People hoping to cancel their subscriptions have to pay “50 percent of their remaining annual subscription,” according to Ars Technica. Here’s a more in-depth look at how much you would owe if you chose the “annual, paid monthly” plan and tried to cancel it. A subscription that is supposed to be only $60 a month could cost you over $200 to cancel. But the fees are one thing; another thing the U.S. government is accusing Adobe of is making the cancellation process too complicated. In fact, they have an entire section in the complaint they filed titled “Adobe’s Unlawful Cancellation Practices.” Here are some excerpts from it that immediately caught my attention. “Locating and clicking on a “Cancel your plan” button does not result in cancellation. Instead, after users have clicked “Cancel your plan,” Adobe has forced them to undergo a convoluted process requiring several additional steps, some of which were wholly unnecessary to complete cancellation.” “Additionally, consumers have had to navigate through several web pages, pop-ups, and offers designed for retention.” “Many subscribers attempting to cancel via phone or chat have been subjected to a time-consuming and burdensome process.” Although this all seems damning, Adobe won’t take it lying down. Dana Rao, Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Chief Trust Officer of Adobe, said in a statement: “Subscription services are convenient, flexible and cost effective to allow users to choose the plan that best fits their needs, timeline and budget. Our priority is to always ensure our customers have a positive experience. We are transparent with the terms and conditions of our subscription agreements and have a simple cancellation process. Anyone else tired of being shackled to a desk between the hours of 9 and 5 on a beautiful day? More and more lately, I've been wanting to take meetings outside in the fresh air. Sure, I can pop some earbuds in and wander around the neighborhood on my phone, but that's hardly conducive to productive note-taking or interacting with screen shares (not to mention the unnecessary mobile data usage). The problem with outdoor computing—as most of you probably know—is the damned glare from the sun. Can't exactly call it working when you can't see the screen to begin with. So, what is a slowly-lapsing-indoorsman to do? Brighten Up Don't get too attached to your brightness settings. Crank that baby up to 11. It won't make much difference (imagine shining a flashlight at a spotlight), but it'll help a lot more than it will hurt. Go Into the Light Say goodbye to dark mode. I've tried (believe me, I have tried), but dark mode is nigh impossible to see on a bright day. I promise, though, light mode isn't nearly as blinding in the sun as it is in that cave you call an office. Seek Some Shade Unless you're rocking an e-ink laptop display, your screen will never overpower the burning ball of sky fire we call The Sun. Amazon has a bunch of laptop-ready shades for this purpose, but if you'd rather not look like a total dork, just sit under a canopy or something (which will make you less likely to need to wear sunglasses too, which won't help the whole "seeing the screen" problem). Mind the Leaf Blowers It's springtime, soon to be summertime, so the gas-powered lawn care cartel is in full force. This carries two problems: You won't be able to hear anyone in video calls.
Nobody will be able to hear you. It's hard to solve for #2, but for #1, get yourself a good pair of noise-canceling headphones. You won't have to wear them all the time (that's hardly comfortable), but it's good to have them on hand for when your neighbor decides to mow his lawn for the third time this week. Anything Else? These are the things that have worked for me so far, but I'm honestly not entirely satisfied. I haven't solved the problem of power (extension cords, maybe?), nor do I have particularly good wifi coverage in my backyard (solvable); and what if I want to work at a park?
