Tokens & Token Standards: Understanding the Basics The best (and perhaps the simplest) definition of a token, in the context of the crypto world, is a cryptocurrency that is created, managed, and distributed on a blockchain-based technology (in this case, Ethereum). It often has a market value and some utility, making it a valued possession. A token standard, as you may have already guessed by now, is a set of rules that command a token's design, behavior, and other attributes. And of course, like any other standard, it needs to be widely adopted for it to be accepted as a standard. These token standards help developers build applications and execute various other implementations. But why are these important? Now, here’s the important thing: when millions of users try and build their own tokens on top of a smart contract on Ethereum, it might be a bit difficult to keep track of all the different ways of code implementation. Token standards help streamline this by laying one common ground for developers working on similar tokens while leaving enough room for personalization, ensuring that the smart contracts remain compatible with existing decentralized exchanges despite the new additions. Thus, players didn’t come to Web3 games to play and enjoy but to participate in a speculative frenzy over token prices. The absence of high-level graphics, compelling characters, and a fun community experience contributed to the steady decline of blockchain gaming. Is there a way out for the Web3 gaming sector in 2023? How do you think the industry can recover without harming general users? Yes, I’m hopeful that the Web3 gaming industry can come back with a bang if they follow a robust multi-pronged strategy. The key is to capitalize on the fundamental principles of blockchain technology to ensure better protection for common users. On one hand, developers have to focus on building games with interesting plots and graphically-rich gameplay. Rather than focussing only on tokenomics, Web3 gaming studios must ensure that they offer an AAA gaming experience to players. Of course, affordable and fast infra is ideal for NFT games. This reality, combined with all the advances yet to come for Arbitrum, makes this L2 fertile ground for a web3 gaming boom. Additionally, projects like have already done much to bring the foundations of a teeming NFT scene to Arbitrum, so the fun looks like it’s just getting started here. This dynamic paves the way to modding, which in turn allows players to actively choose how to want to enjoy and experience their games of choice. There has been lots of interesting work on this front lately. For example, in recent months we’ve seen , , and introduce new on-chain game engines. These are the bloomings of a new field, and the possibilities are wide open here at the moment. Curio Lattice Adam Cochran 8) No-token Games Practically every NFT game to date has embraced ERC20 tokens in some form or fashion. The most popular approaches we’ve seen so far have revolved around single-token or dual-token models. The latter splits out governance and utility matters across separate ERC20s, while the former tries to handle all its needs with just one token. I think this is a fascinating approach that can lead to funner and more balanced games. Toward that end, I’ve put together a wishlist — 8 rising themes in the NFT gaming sector that I (and maybe soon you too) want to see more of in 2023. Let’s dive in! -WMP 8 web3 gaming themes for 2023 🕹️ 1) Deeper, richer gameplay One reason people love games so much? They allow us to test and hone our skills. Nowhere is this truer than in games that have lots of , i.e. they offer a rich variety of tactical and strategic gameplay possibilities. Anything from Chess to Hearthstone are examples here. depth The NFT gaming ecosystem is growing faster than ever now, but to date many of its early titles have felt “flat” in lacking much to do and thus offering players little in the way of tests of skill. One project working in the right direction here right now is Axie Infinity. In April 2022, Axie creators Sky Mavis unveiled , an optimized version of their original tactical card battler game that introduced card updates, a charms and runes crafting system, and real-time combat. As you can see from the tweet above, these new elements allow players to enjoy a of depth with unique, custom-tailored playing styles. Axie Infinity: Origins lot Of course, Axie Infinity: Origins is still a work in progress itself, but I hope to see more projects following its lead in “going deep” in 2023. If you’re interested in learning more about this game in particular, check out its basics . in this Sky Mavis guide 2) New mobile releases A decent smartphone is more affordable than a computer or a gaming console, so mobile games are great for accessibility. One thing I’ve always really enjoyed about Axie Infinity was how you could play it on Android devices (with iOS support coming soon, too), and there’s no doubt we’re going to see more NFT games emulating this approach going forward as mobile gaming activity keeps rising to new heights. One project I’m watching on this front right now is . Treeverse A mobile MMORPG built on Ethereum and headed up by and Loopify, Treeverse is currently in limited pre-alpha testing. However the early videos from this testing reveals the makings of a game that not only looks pretty but also looks downright fun in my opinion. Endless Clouds Bringing fun to more people, and more people into the empowering applications of crypto, is the lodestar for mobile NFT games. I’m really interested to see how Treeverse and other mobile titles like it progress accordingly. 3) Gasless gaming Games with lots of on-chain elements can come with lots of transactions and wallet signatures. Lots of transactions and wallet signatures = poor user experience. As such, a new NFT game that’s demonstrating how to provide gasless UX is , an on-chain adventure game built on Polygon. The project uses a that allows Pirate Nation to cover transactions behind the scenes so players don’t have to pay for gas or sign any transactions mid-game. Pirate Nation game wallet system Here’s hoping other web3 games start experiment with this superior UX approach, too! 4) The Arbitrum gaming invasion Arbitrum has been the largest and most popular layer-two (L2) Ethereum scaling solution for a while now. Of course, affordable and fast infra is ideal for NFT games. This reality, combined with all the advances yet to come for Arbitrum, makes this L2 fertile ground for a web3 gaming boom. Additionally, projects like have already done much to bring the foundations of a teeming NFT scene to Arbitrum, so the fun looks like it’s just getting started here. That’s true for a title like , a free-to-play RPG that just had an explosive launch and is poised to bring considerable activity to Arbitrum going forward. This is just a taste of what’s to come for this L2, I think. Treasure DAO literally The Beacon 5) More tournaments The thrill of competition, the glory of skillful wins, the gain of achievements and rewards, and that sense of belonging to a community of passionate peers. are the reasons why players find tournaments so exciting. These So when it comes to NFT games, tournaments are absolutely a great way to offer players fun and compelling experiences on a rolling basis, and I’d love to see more of them accordingly. One project that I think is nailing the tournament approach currently is , which lets players build fantasy decks and then register for a variety of different competitions whenever they’d like. Yes please! Sorare: NBA 6) Flexible crypto-native designs Sometimes when NFT games push out updates, the game creators will temporarily pause their contract(s) and players will have to unstake or migrate their gaming assets. This isn’t great UX, right. One game that’s tackling this problem right now is , which is set to launch in April 2023. It’s doing so with the flexible and modular smart contract approach that allows NFT games (among other use cases) to readily extend and update their projects. I’m all in favor of seeing more of this practical approach in the space. Shattered EON Diamond Standard 7) More on-chain game engine experiments By “on-chain game engine,” I mean a series of smart contracts that are created to power a game’s backend indefinitely on a blockchain like Ethereum. On-chain game engines are interesting because they allow third-party creators to openly build new experiences around and on top of NFT games. This dynamic paves the way to modding, which in turn allows players to actively choose how to want to enjoy and experience their games of choice. There has been lots of interesting work on this front lately. For example, in recent months we’ve seen introduce new on-chain game engines. These are the bloomings of a new field, and the possibilities are wide open here at the moment. Curio, Lattice, and Adam Cochran 8) No-token games Practically every NFT game to date has embraced ERC20 tokens in some form or fashion. The most popular approaches we’ve seen so far have revolved around single-token or dual-token models. The latter splits out governance and utility matters across separate ERC20s, while the former tries to handle all its needs with just one token. Both these approaches can face major issues, which 0xKepler, one of the great minds in web3 gaming in my opinion, lays out excellently in this thread: As way to avoid these issues, 0xKepler proposes the creation of a that would rely on “off-chain currency + NFTs for value accrual.” no-token model The idea is that players could “mint NFTs against their off-chain currency,” which would mitigate direct fiat exchanges and thus lessen the financial motivations that when unchecked. I think this is a fascinating approach that can lead to funner and more balanced games. I’ll be excited if we start seeing more projects put this strategy into action, because we definitely need more experimentation in this regard. can wreck an NFT game The future of fun awaits 👾 If you’re into NFTs and you’re also a gamer, it’s an incredibly exciting time to be on the ground in the NFT ecosystem. The NFT games scene is still fairly primordial, yes, but in observing here one gets the sense right now that a corner is being turned. Important strides are being made. Where there was once only a few simple NFT game efforts, there are now such titles in various stages of development and with varying complexity levels. many Indeed, the possibilities and the tech are opening up. The gameplay is getting richer, the UX is getting better, our collective infra and collective knowledge are improving in all directions. We’re still far from solving everything in this sector, that’s for sure, but my hope and forecast as an avid gamer and NFTer is we’ll see no shortage of NFT gaming projects continuing to make significant advances in 2023! Be it Web2 or Web3, technology should connect people and offer benefits by interacting with other computers (on-chain events) and the natural world (augmented reality), especially when it comes to gaming. Web3 gaming should be fun and safe Games define us, make us wiser and more street-smart, calm us down, bring us together as a community and sometimes, stress us. Above all, a fun and safe gaming experience are of the utmost importance to all gaming experiences! Crypto use in games today has made games challenging to understand and extremely risky for gamers. Especially for Web3 gaming, it shouldn’t involve financing to prevent it from becoming another decentralized finance (DeFi) or trading product. Any in-game monetary actions in free-to-play games should be simple and understandable. A little look into Web3/blockchain games What’s the Web3 gaming scene, also known as blockchain gaming, like today? In one sentence — it’s grown 2,000% from 2021 to 2022 ( ). as reported by DappRadar Around 800k everyday gamers make 18 million transactions daily, according to . In addition, “ ” in quarter 1 of 2022, meaning “2022 investments will be 150% higher than last year”. Footprint Analytics blockchain-based game companies fundraised $2.5 billion Some of the most adopted Web3/blockchain games with active daily users doing thousands of on-chain activities include: Gala Games platform with multiple games on Ethereum The Sandbox Game on Ethereum/Polygon (promising) Splinterlands (Wax/Hive) Trickshot Blitz (Flow), Benji Bananas and Planet IX on Polygon Tiny World (BNB) Axie Infinity (Ethereum/Ronin) MarsColony on Harmony Tank Wars Zone on Fantom STEPN on Solana There are also promising games like Blockstars, Alpha League Racing on Solana, and Project Nebula on ICON. That said, I’d like to point out that Web3 games don’t all have to run on-chain. It’s great if they do, but this is far from the requirements. Some games have specific on-chain activities from gameplay proofs, achievements and having part of the gameplay on-chain. Some others use Web3 avatar support or skins that are often imported/exported just once and verified from time to time, all while no gameplay happens on the chain. We’ll soon see more metaverse projects and massive multiplayer online games (MMO) that will use Web3 and keep their gameplay classical. Web3 and gaming Web3 is like a new database layer — a new way to store specific data and allow customers to interact with it in much more ways than used to be possible previously. It’s almost like a new form of API! With the rise of Web3, we have a fantastic opportunity to use this technological advancement to create a positive impact on the gaming world, allowing more transparency, ownership and an experience that players drive. On the other hand, issues need to be resolved to give users the fun and safe experience they deserve, which brings us to 3 main problems in Web3 games today. Three main problems in Web3 games today User onboarding User onboarding for Web3 games right now is an absolute mess. From requesting players’ wallet information to long ‘know your customer’ (KYC) forms that users don’t understand, the chaos begins from registration. While specific platforms like Wax, ICON, Obyte, etc., have their approaches, there’s been (thankfully) several initiatives to mitigate user onboarding issues, for example: Metamask unifying , along with Coinbase Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) wallets Blocknative’s Web3-Onboard library Opera and its Crypto Browser In addition, many new initiatives are starting from Metamask + Epic + GOG and , who are all pushing forward to solve the user onboarding issue. Superb Game onboarding, no matter the web it’s in, should be simple, seamless and secure, e.g., secure single sign-on (SSO) two-factor authentication (2FA) protection. Users shouldn’t have to duplicate their KYC or personal details each time they want to play a new Web3 game. To allow players to enjoy games further, they shouldn’t have to create wallets or share wallet information upfront. In many instances, users don’t usually need to interact with their wallets. Hence, instead of having wallet information as an onboarding barrier, users could be informed about both custodial and non-custodial wallets or have wallets created for them as part of the registration flow. An example case that worked well was and its easy process of buying NFTs and setting up wallets. Reddit As user onboarding can be a complicated process for game developers, this is where Web3 game portals and networks, like us — , come into play. Game providers and portals can help with simple, safe and secure user onboarding so that gamers can simply enjoy their games and game developers can leverage the latest technology. Superb Game assets and transactions Unfortunately, another bad dream somewhat looms right after the nightmare of registration and onboarding: “Where do I get my ‘SuperDuper’ game token and game NFT that’s needed to play?” This brings us to the second problem of Web3 games today: the difficulty of game assets and transactions, namely, how to obtain game assets to start playing new games and perform game transactions with other players. Obtaining game assets should be accessible. Games must be fun, educational and relaxing experiences. If they allow social interactions, such as massive(ly) multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG), that’s even better. Players want to enjoy games, collect items, feel involved, participate in the community and be valuable gamers. They don’t want to spend forever trying to figure out how to start playing a new game, whichever web it’s in. As such, games should enable easy access and purchase of game assets, especially during the onboarding process, so players can start playing almost immediately. Transaction of game assets with other players should be seamless Currently, there is a lack of good platforms for players to quickly and seamlessly trade game assets or perform in-game transactions, e.g., sending item X to a friend or creating a gift. As a result, users have to go into marketplaces, e.g., NFT marketplaces like Opensea, Rarible, Sorare, SolSea, Magic Eden and MakersPlace, which aren’t very user-friendly for such transactions. These are issues that Superb is aiming to solve via our SDKs for game developers. We want to connect and enable smooth onboarding with automated integration and setup of game assets, like a starter package that gets easily transferred to the user’s account for purchased games or game assets. Within this setup, purchasing a game or game asset will be as simple as e-commerce orders are today, regardless of the payment system — a single click toward conversion. In addition, we strive to make it easy for game transactions within our Web3 game portal by enabling easy, seamless and safe transfers via username handles so users can easily transact and exchange game assets with each other. Security and Trust While there are thousands of Web3 games right now and more games (e.g., AAA games) upcoming, there’s currently a slight . This, unfortunately, brings about the possibility of thieves, scammers, fraudsters and other bad people who want to get rich by taking advantage of others’ ignorance or extorting accounts and other assets from gamers. As technology evolves, gold diggers or projects built on wrong attitudes or bad principles may subsequently affect gamers negatively. lack of security and regulation Here’s where gaming portals and networks can come in: to provide a robust platform for stimulating trust. From underpinning decentralized credit scores to prediction markets, NFTs will play an increasingly pivotal role in reenvisioning and actualizing DeFi’s full potential. Why’s that, you ask? Scroll down to find out the answer. What Does Binance's Acquisition of FTX Mean for Web3 Gaming? The first rule of the bear market is to survive. And FTX broke that rule. Here's a quick recap: SBF (founder of FTX) implied on Twitter that CZ (founder of Binance) wasn't allowed to come to the US. Then a story leaked in CoinDesk showing FTX's balance sheet. Surprise, surprise - it didn't look good. Most of FTX's money was locked in different tokens tied to SBF (FTT, SOL, SRM.) Based on that story, CZ tweeted that Binance will dump $2 billion worth of FTT tokens on the open market. FTT is FTX's token used for trading fees. People started withdrawing from FTX, and the company paused the withdrawals. CZ announced that Binance is buying FTX to "save them." (Binance is buying all of their businesses except FTX US.) But the deal is not done. It's nonbinding, so Binance can pull out. And this is where we are now - the largest crypto exchange buying its biggest competitor. But we are here to talk about web3 gaming, and this deal could have big implications for the space. That's because FTX has invested a ton into the industry: They've their own gaming division that helps companies launch tokens and offer support for NFTs. FTX bought a gaming studio - Good Luck Games, that launched a battle card game, Storybook Brawl. They have a lot of money in Solana, one of the most active blockchains when it comes to gaming. FTX signed the largest esports naming rights deal ever with TSM, rebranding them to TSM FTX. They also sponsored the North American League of Legends Tournament (LCS.) FTX launched its $2 billion investment arm, FTX Ventures, which invested in Yuga Labs, Doodles, and Faraway (creators of Mini Royale.) And it's not clear what will happen to all of these initiatives going forward. Of all of them, only the FTX Gaming division is part of FTX US. The remaining partnerships and initiatives were signed with FTX, making them a part of the Binance deal. While Binance hasn't been as active when it comes to partnership, they're also big supporters of web3 gaming. They launched a $200 million fund with Animoca Brands to support the industry. So with Binance looking to acquire FTX, how is this going to affect web3 gaming? It's bad news for Solana - FTX was a huge investor in the Solana ecosystem, but Binance has its own chain (BNB.) It's likely that they will prioritize it instead of supporting a direct competitor. As a result, games on Solana might suffer. There won't be more reckless spending by FTX. Binance has always been more reserved when it comes to partnerships. The gaming initiatives might be in good hands, given Binance's commitment to web3 gaming. NFTs are Showing What the Future of Entertainment Will Look Like The best example of that is the Bored Apes Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection. The project became a wild success, getting celebrities like Steph Curry, Jimmy Fallon, and Eminem on board. The NFTs acted as a ticket to exclusive events like an NYC event that had a performance from Chris Rock. The project got popular not because of a traditional marketing campaign but because each holder rocked their PFP on Twitter. The Metaverse is Coming Teenagers' screen time has doubled during the pandemic. And with TikTok, YouTube shorts, and Roblox, there are more types of online social interactions than ever before. But Gen Z is not a simple passive consumer of content. They're also creating content, and it reflects in Gen Z's personal relationships.
