The electrification of the car industry is still in its baby years, and yet we should already be thinking of what will happen in a few years, when millions of electric vehicles (EVs) start getting retired. In 2021, EV sales more than doubled to 6.6 million, representing close to 9% of the global car market and more than tripling their market share from two years earlier [ ]. Assuming that the average lifespan of an EV battery pack is 10 to 15 years, we will soon start seeing the first electric cars getting retired. 1 Considering that EV batteries —like any other battery— degrade slowly over time instead of suddenly failing, it’s reasonable to think that those EVs retiring soon will still have batteries that can hold some percentage of their original charge capacity. However, many customers will not want a car that can only hold, say, 60% of its original charge capacity. Finding a sustainable solution for this situation will be critical for the successful global transition to electric vehicles and its long-term sustainability. Fortunately, there are multiple possible solutions, even though none of them are easy to implement. Let’s take a look at the top 3 possible futures for an EV battery. 1. Recycle its materials EV batteries are composed of valuable minerals like lithium and cobalt, which come with their own environmental challenges, especially for the local communities where they get mined. For example, lithium is primarily extracted from Australia and South America, but this process requires using billions of gallons of water a year with a dire environmental effect. Cobalt reserves found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are being mined by workers who experience labor abuses [ ]. 2 Recycling old batteries seems at first glance like the most reasonable solution, because it would help reduce the industry’s dependency on new virgin materials. However, recycling an EV battery pack is costly due to its hazardous complexity; the process starts by shredding the batteries, and then by breaking them down further with heat or chemicals until the different materials are properly separated. A startup founded by a former Tesla executive, Redwood Materials, is going this route, and they already got the attention of car manufacturers like Ford [ ]. A Canadian battery resource recovery company, Li-Cycle, is following suit with GM [ ]. 3 4 Other companies, like Ascend Elements, are trying to go one step further, transforming retired lithium-ion batteries into a better product: batteries that charge faster and last longer. Instead of using high-temperature furnaces to smelt metals and separate the materials, this company has patented a new process that shreds batteries multiple times until it creates a fine powder they call “black mass”; this powder is then used to create new battery cathodes that have a 30% longer lifecycle [ ]. 5 Their ultimate goal is to create a circular battery economy, where mining new materials is not necessary. In this scenario, EV battery manufacturers buy all their required materials from recycling companies, and then sell the new battery packs to the car manufacturers. Then, car manufacturers take the retired batteries that were sold years before back to the recycling centers, and the cycle starts again. Nonetheless, this model requires economic incentives to ensure that costs are kept below the costs of mining, and even though that's not today's case, many hope that the economies of scale will fix this. 2. Find a new purpose Given the inherent challenges of the recycling process described earlier, an alternative approach might have a more immediate application: repurposing old EV battery packs to build energy storage systems. These can support large power stations by contributing towards grid stabilisation and even help with supply reconstruction following a power station outage. Mercedes-Benz has started doing this with a new venture, Mercedes-Benz Energy [ ], and they are not alone. Startups like RePurpose Energy, Smartville Energy and ReJoule have received funding from the California Energy Commission Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) funding pool [ ]. 6 7 Battery storage systems can be used to directly balance the intermittency of wind and solar generation in a world that is working to transition consumption to renewable energy sources. A system like this can also be used short-term to store energy when electricity is cheaper, and then discharge it during peak hours, reducing customer load on existing power plants. One of the biggest challenges of building these storage systems is data. Battery manufacturer, cathode material, battery condition, and usage history are all critical data points for the potential secondary market. The Global Battery Alliance has proposed a “Battery Passport”, endorsed during the 2021 G7 Leaders’ Meeting; a platform for securely sharing information and data across the industry value chain [ ]. 8 3. Store and wait Understandably, the used EV battery market is still full of uncertainty, so a final, cheaper but disappointing alternative to this whole problem is to store old batteries in warehouses, waiting for the future to come. Spiers New Technologies, recently acquired by Cox Automotive, is a company attempting to do a little bit of everything: disassemble, fix, refurbish, recycle and store old EV battery packs. A recent Wired article described how their warehouse in Oklahoma City contains towers of retired EV batteries [ ]. The article mentions in an interview with Dirk Spiers, CEO & founder of the company, that “they’re still figuring out the plan for many of the batteries in that warehouse, but he believes that in the end, they’ll be viewed as an opportunity, not waste.” 9 A report by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from July 2021 [ ] analyzed the impacts of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries going into the municipal solid waste management process, which showed a growing amount of fires in these storage facilities primarily caused by issues with small consumer devices like cell phones, tablets or laptops. 10 The risk of fires will only increase as more batteries get stored, waiting for a significant change in the recycling/repurposing space. Conclusion EVs are projected to account for 45 percent of the U.S. market in 2035, up from a forecast of 32 percent in 2030 [ ]. In its plans to cut CO2 emissions over the next few years, the European Union proposed a ban on the sale of new internal combustion engine cars from 2035 [ ]. 11 12 Abandoning fossil fuels and internal combustion engine cars in favor of electric vehicles cannot happen fast enough; it's an exciting greener future that will hopefully come alongside a move to renewable energy sources. My hope is that with regulation across the world slowly moving towards that electrified future, the battery recycling market will spark with innovation in the coming years. I also understand that this post might be hard to read by many passionate founders invested in security token products but, hopefully, the arguments are pragmatic enough that help provide a better perspective about the immediate future of the security token market. The series A crunch is a phenomenon that occurs in fast-growing, and often overhyped, markets when there is a misalignment between the capital available for seed rounds, the value captured by startups in the market and the capital pools available for series A financing. From a market dynamics perspective, a series A crunch results on a large number of startups raising angel or seed rounds but not delivering enough value to make it to a series A. Graphically, the series A crunch looks similar to the following: Conceptually, a series A crunch is the consequence of relatively easy access to early stage capital in a market that is developing faster than its venture investing pools. Any series A crunch typically results in a large percentage of startups going out of business and a small number of well capitalized companies leading the charge into the next phase of the market that will then produce more startups. Series A Crunch and Security Tokens In the context of security tokens, a series A crunch seems inevitable. With the exception of a few well capitalized companies, most security token startups raised small funding rounds 10–12 months ago which means they are entering the next phase of their funding cycle. Unfortunately, the access to series A capital in the security token space is still very limited and the technological foundation of the space still very immature. That seems like the perfect storm for a series A crunch. In case you are still skeptical, let’s go a bit deeper and explore some of the key market dynamics that are conspiring towards a series A crunch in the security token space. Below, I listed 10 arguments that justify the thesis of a security token series A crunch: 1. Excepting tier1 funds like Andreessen-Horowitz or Union Square Ventures, most VC funds haven’t incorporated security tokens as part of their investment thesis and are waiting for the market to develop a bit more before placing bets. Most Venture Funds Haven’t Developed a Thesis About Security Tokens: 2. The crypto-boom of 2017 made it relatively easy for security token startups to raise angel or seed rounds but not enough for a series A. Security Token Startups Capitalized in a Healthy 2017 Crypto Climate: 3. The segment of the investment community that is super bullish on crypto such as the crypto hedge funds have vastly underperformed in the current market and are experiencing a capital crunch themselves. Crypto Venture and Hedge Funds are Underperforming: 4. I think the optimism within the security token startup community doesn’t correlate with the realities of the market. Every data point in the space indicates that the security token market might take a few long years to achieve any level of mainstream adoption. The Security Tokens Market is Likely to Take Years to go Mainstream: 5. Without any interest of criticism any specific project, I think we can all agree that most security tokens issued until now haven’t been great. There is a lot of expectations around the trading of tokens like Science and Blockchain Capital so hopefully that will contribute towards the momentum in the market. There Haven’t Been Many Great Security Token Projects: 6. Technology stocks are experiencing a fairly decent correction with about 80% of the tech sector trading at an average 10% down from their 52-week highs. Bearish sentiment in public tech market typically translates into a conservative tech venture investing climate. Public Technology Market Corrections: 7. The massive drop in the value of cryptocurrencies is contributing to the skepticism of the venture community. Crypto Market Bloodbath: 8. An integral component of the security token market such as exchanges is taking some time to materialize causing most investors to adopt a wait-and-see strategy. Security Token Exchanges are Taking a Long Time to Launch: 9. Most security token platforms in the market haven’t injected clear crypto economics into their products or don’t even have a token. Token economics has been one of the most attractive factors for venture investors deploying capital into crypto and blockchain startups. The absence of that factor contributes towards the financial skepticism of most venture groups. Lack of Crypto-Economics: 10. From a venture investor perspective, there is only a handful of security token startups that have delivered enough value to justify a series A investment. Excepting vehicles like stable coins, most monetization in the space has been on a project-by-project basics which is relatively hard to scale. Until recurrent and scalable revenue models start becoming more viable for security tokens, most venture investors might remain on the sidelines. More Stablecoins and Utility Tokens: Based on the current funding raised by security token startups, I think is pretty likely that the next phase of the market will be led by a very small number of companies that are well capitalized to wait for the development of the space and build the correct infrastructure building blocks. After that, we should see a reemergence of new security token startups that tackle new areas of the market. Only a Handful of Startups Survive to the Next Phase of the Market: Making predictions about markets has never been my forte and not something I particularly enjoy doing. The confluence of events in the security token market is making a series A crunch looks like a very likely phenomenon. While painful in the short term, the correction might remove a lot of the noise in the security token space and catalyst the best projects into the next phase of the market. Among other activities, the team is working on developing a heuristic test to identify asymptomatic, pre-symptomatic and mild cases of the virus, which would otherwise go undetected. It seeks to find new innovative ways for simple testing that each and every one of us can administer on our own. Recent studies conducted in China and Italy indicate that 40 to 60% of the COVID-19 carriers were asymptomatic. However, low levels of oxygen in their blood proved to be one indicator or the virus. Unaware that they were infected, these carriers were surely passing the virus along to others. They could have received early indications by checking the levels of oxygen in their blood, which could have allowed them to isolate themselves until they were able to be formally tested. Quoting the head of this research, Myriam Bocobza: “A large percentage of the Coronavirus infected population may suffer from silent hypoxemia, or hypoxemia without dyspnea. We can now estimate that 30 to 50% of the positive coronavirus carriers did not feel any symptoms, so they kept wandering around infecting more people. We found out that many smartphones and smartwatch devices enable you to test your own blood oxygen levels”. Identifying the right kind of devices We discovered that smart devices carrying the SpO2 sensor are able to conduct the blood-oxygen test. Remote work undoubtedly has its shortcomings, though these can be mitigated once you get a grip on things. Probably the most commonly cited issue is the isolation factor. It is easy to feel cooped up in your home and lonely since your colleagues are often on the other side of the world. This is a big problem that can tank contentment, creativity, and productivity quickly. We solve this with frequent video calls, voice chat rooms and, now and then, virtual afterwork socials where everyone orders themselves a pizza or two and hops on a group video chat to socialize and have a good time. There are, as you might imagine, many major advantages to remote work. It is great to roll out of bed a quarter of an hour before work, work from the comfort of your own home, have your own kitchen, be able to wear whatever you like, and not have to take a long journey every morning – often cramped into some form of public transport vehicle with a group of strangers – to get to an equally cramped office bumping elbows with your colleagues. These are all things that we have been bragging about for years now to all of our “conventional job” friends. However, it was not until now, when the world is gripped with fear over the rapid spread of Coronavirus and people are being prompted to work from home wherever possible, that the health benefits of remote work were really highlighted. With a fully decentralized workforce, none of our team members have to risk contamination from exposure to large groups of unknown persons in enclosed spaces like the bus, trains, the underground, offices or canteens. There is no need to touch the handles of shared bathrooms and doors in public spaces. There is no need to trust that the workers cooking your canteen lunch and breathing on your food don’t have a sniffle that they are writing off as a hangover symptom. In other words, as well as being decentralized, we are trust minimized – with a near negligible need to depend on others for our own health and safety. It is incredibly important for companies to take care of their workers, especially in this time of a global pandemic. Many employers are taking the wheel and finding ways to reorganize their businesses to facilitate remote work; either just as a short term solution or for the long haul. We strongly support these employers and the governments across the world that have encouraged employers and workers to move towards remote work at this time. With the advantages of remote work becoming increasingly clear, we look forward to seeing a future free from oppressive office jobs and with healthy, happy workers staying safe and enjoying their careers. Now that so many corporations have allowed their employees to work from home due to the current crisis, workers and businesses alike will be able to clearly see the many advantages to remote work. For workers, it is all of the things mentioned above – flexible hours, creature comforts, safety, mental health, convenience and so on. For employers, advantages include reduced overheads (office hire, electricity, computers, physical space health and safety, etcetera), a happier workforce and, often, improved output from employees. We expect that many employees will never want to go back to working from their offices leading to an increase in people looking for remote work opportunities and an increase in the number of online entrepreneurs. Equally, many enterprises may realize that they would prefer to employ a distributed team due to the many advantages associated. RELATED WORK The University of Rochester Multi-Modal Music Performance Dataset (URMP) [1] is a dataset with 44 Multi-instrument video recordings of classical music pieces. Each instrument present in a piece was recorded separately, both with video and high-quality audio with a stand-alone microphone, in order to have ground-truth individual tracks. Although playing separately, the instruments were coordinated by using a conducting video with a pianist playing in order to set the common timing for the different players. After synchronization, the audio of the individual videos was replaced by the high-quality audio of the microphone and then different recordings were assembled to create the mixture: the individual high-quality audio recordings were added up to create the audio mixture and the visual content was composited in a single video with a common background where all players were arranged at the same level from left to right. For each piece, the dataset provides the musical score in MIDI format, the high-quality individual instrument audio recordings and the videos of the assembled pieces. The instruments present in the dataset, shown in Figure 1, are common instruments in chamber orchestras. In spite of all its good characteristics, it is a small dataset and thus not appropriate for training deep learning architectures. Two other datasets of audio-visual recordings of musical instruments performances have been presented recently: Music [23] and MusicES [31]. Music consists of 536 recordings of solos and 149 videos of duets across 11 categories: accordion, acoustic guitar, cello, clarinet, erhu, flute, saxophone, trumpet, tuba, violin and xylophone. This dataset was gathered by querying YouTube. MusicES [31] is an extension of MUSIC to around the triple of its original size with approximately 1475 recordings but spread in 9 categories instead: accordion, guitar, cello, flute, saxophone, trumpet, tuba, violin and xylophone. There are 7 common categories in MUSIC and Solos: violin, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and tuba. The common categories between MusicES and Solos are 6 (the former ones except clarinet). Solos and MusicES are complementary. There is only an small intersection of 5% between both, which means both datasets can be combined into a bigger one. We can find in the literature several examples which show the utility of audio-visual datasets. The Sound of Pixels [23] performs audio source separation generating audio spectral components which are further smartly selected by using visual features coming from the video stream to obtain separated sources. This idea was further extended in [20] in order to separate the different sounds present in the mixture in a recursive way. At each stage, the system separates the most salient source from the ones remaining in the mixture. The Sound of Motions [19] uses dense trajectories obtained from optical flow to condition audio source separation, being able even to separate same-instrument mixtures. Visual conditioning is also used in [18] to separate different instruments; during training, a classification loss is used on the separated sounds to enforce object consistency and a co-separation loss forces the estimated individual sounds to produce the original mixtures once reassembled. In [17], the authors developed an energy-based method which minimizes a Non-Negative Matrix Factorization term with an activation matrix which is forced to be aligned to a matrix containing per-source motion information. This motion matrix contains the average magnitude velocities of the clustered motion trajectories in each player bounding box. Recent works show the rising use of skeletons in audiovisual tasks. In Audio to body dynamics [29] authors show it is possible to predict skeletons reproducing the movements of players playing instruments such as piano or violin. Skeletons have proven to be useful for establishing audio-visual correspondences, such as body or finger motion with note onsets or pitch fluctuations, in chamber music performances [21]. A recent work [32] tackles the source separation problem in a similar to Sound of Motions [19] but replacing the dense trajectories by skeleton information. Music consists of 536 recordings of solos and 149 videos of duets across 11 categories: accordion, acoustic guitar, cello, clarinet, erhu, flute, saxophone, trumpet, tuba, violin and xylophone. This dataset was gathered by querying YouTube. MusicES [31] is an extension of MUSIC to around the triple of its original size with approximately 1475 recordings but spread in 9 categories instead: accordion, guitar, cello, flute, saxophone, trumpet, tuba, violin and xylophone. There are 7 common categories in MUSIC and Solos: violin, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and tuba. The common categories between MusicES and Solos are 6 (the former ones except clarinet). Solos and MusicES are complementary. There is only an small intersection of 5% between both, which means both datasets can be combined into a bigger one. We can find in the literature several examples which show the utility of audio-visual datasets. The Sound of Pixels [23] performs audio source separation generating audio spectral components which are further smartly selected by using visual features coming from the video stream to obtain separated sources. This idea was further extended in [20] in order to separate the different sounds present in the mixture in a recursive way. At each stage, the system separates the most salient source from the ones remaining in the mixture. The Sound of Motions [19] uses dense trajectories obtained from optical flow to condition audio source separation, being able even to separate same-instrument mixtures. Visual conditioning is also used in [18] to separate different instruments; during training, a classification loss is used on the separated sounds to enforce object consistency and a co-separation loss forces the estimated individual sounds to produce the original mixtures once reassembled. In [17], the authors developed an energy-based method which minimizes a Non-Negative Matrix Factorization term with an activation matrix which is forced to be aligned to a matrix containing per-source motion information. This motion matrix contains the average magnitude velocities of the clustered motion trajectories in each player bounding box. Recent works show the rising use of skeletons in audiovisual tasks. In Audio to body dynamics [29] authors show it is possible to predict skeletons reproducing the movements of players playing instruments such as piano or violin. Skeletons have proven to be useful for establishing audio-visual correspondences, such as body or finger motion with note onsets or pitch fluctuations, in chamber music performances [21]. A recent work [32] tackles the source separation problem in a similar to Sound of Motions [19] but replacing the dense trajectories by skeleton information. We live in a world where powerful technological forces such as AI and blockchain are not only shaping our digital destiny but also redefining the boundaries of innovation. A prime example on our radar is DePIN (short for Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network), an amalgam of web3 ecosystems offering cost-effective solutions to the everyday challenges faced by humans. DePIN empowers a more democratic future for computing power through a vast global network where everyone can participate in a resource-sharing economy. As a peer-to-peer infrastructure, it unlocks efficient distribution of computing resources and allows users to earn rewards for their contributions. This innovation seeks to bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds through blockchain technology. There have been different groundbreaking DePIN projects such as StorX Network, Drife, Helium Network, Healthblocks, Smartpoints, Airweave, etc. Drife, for example, is not only poised to take Uber and Lyft out of business but it is also set to disrupt the transportation sector. The emergence of DePIN has paved the way for innovators to create cost-effective solutions to the inefficiencies and limitations of the existing critical infrastructure such as transportation, water supply, energy, communication systems, financial services, healthcare, and defense. Most especially, it is set to eliminate centralization and encourage decentralized ownership of these critical services. As an independent researcher, I find DePIN projects fascinating enough to be studied individually. In this article, we explore Aten Krotos (aka Suraj Venkat) and Arthava’s works on  Zero-knowledge Artificial General Intelligence(ZkAGI), an open-source AI project built on DePIN. Leveraging Zero-Knowledge and DePIN, the duo proposed ZkAGI to tackle the privacy concerns in AI. What Are Zero-Knowledge Proofs(ZKPs)? Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZkPs)are a cryptographic technique that allows one party (the prover) to convince another party (the verifier) that they possess a specific piece of information, without revealing the information itself. In a zero-knowledge system, a prover convinces a verifier they hold a secret without revealing it, using a special proof and verification key. This relatively new field  has become a cornerstone of privacy in the cryptocurrency world, reinventing how sensitive data or information is shared without it being revealed. Since the keypoint about ZK is to share data while preserving privacy, the team made a strong case for extending Zero-knowledge  use case to Artificial Intelligence(AI) within the DePIN ecosystem. As an open-source DePIN project, ZkAGI seeks to tackle the challenge of privacy in AI by combining two cutting-edge technologies: Zero Knowledge (ZK) and Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN). This innovative approach highlights the need for secure and private AI computation on a cost-effective platform. The choice for DePIN is justified by the fact that it offers efficient and scalable AI computation and significantly lowers the cost compared to what traditional AI platforms offer. By leveraging Zynapse, the goal is to help “ developers and enterprises unlock the full potential of AI while ensuring the privacy of their data”. CONCLUSION Performance is an aspect that should always be taken into account when creating Lambda functions, especially if you plan to combine them with Java. Once the performance improvements offered by these approaches for using Java with AWS Lambda have been quantified. It is evident that Java can be used competitively with AWS Lambda without the need to resort to runtimes like Node.js or Python (which usually report better performance). Having tested various combinations of proposed strategies and demonstrated that the performance is similar to what can be achieved with the use of GraalVM, we recommend avoiding its usage. We consider it essential to profile the Java functions to select the optimal memory configuration and using AWS SDK v2. From there, optionally, the next step is to the rest of the techniques to achieve one of the proposed combinations. Additionally, following the general best practices such as initializing connections outside the handler or reduce the bundle size, among others, also contribute to optimizing Java functions. The optimization strategies we propose are not the only ones available, there are many other techniques that can similarly yield excellent results. It is important to highlight that the process of optimizing a function is linear in terms of difficulty. In other words, it’s relatively easy to obtain a significant improvement, but if you want to squeeze out the maximum performance, the process requires trial and error and greater effort. It’s also important to highlight that the percentage of improvement offered by each approach depends on the specific use case in which they are applied.
