I’m sure that many of you guys have heard this term before, “port”, but what exactly does it mean in the world of computers? Well, a dictionary definition is an endpoint to a connection but that doesn’t really help much, so let’s break it down! Picture This When most hear the word “ ”, many may think of a harbor, so let’s use that to help us visualize. port So let’s say that our harbor is our router, connections come in, and connections come out. Now imagine the ships coming in and out of our harbor as internet traffic. When a ship comes into our harbor, it will look for a specific place to dock, this specific place will represent our port number. One of the most common port is , which is the port for web traffic. So our ship is entering our harbor looking for it’s assigned docking location, 80, if that port is open, our ship will come and dock. Awesome, our connection was made, but what if I don’t want a ship to dock? Well, in that case, we use something called a to block certain ports. Our ship will approach our harbor and look for it’s assigned docking location, 80, but the port is blocked; the connection cannot be made and the shipping company, which represents the sender, might be notified depending on the . port 80 firewall protocol Protocols There is two type of protocols in the realm of the internet, TCP and UDP. TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol, which is the most commonly used protocol on the internet. TCP will guarantee that all the packets are sent to the recipient by numbering them and sending them in order while the recipient will make sure that all of the packets are there, if it’s not, then the recipient will send a response to the sender and the sender will send all of those packets again to make sure they are all received. On the other hand, UDP doesn’t make sure all of those packets are sent, but it will just keep sending them. The sender will only send the packets and will not wait for the recipient to send a response back, meaning there is a chance that some data can get lost in this transmission. So why would people choose this protocol? Speed. There are some applications where speed matters more than reliability, such as online games or live broadcasts. Now we know what the protocols are, but how can we picture them to have a better understanding of them? Well, let’s say that our packets are shipping containers and the entire shipment is what’s being transmitted. Let’s picture a ship unloading its containers, each container is numbered, is being taken off in order, and after every container is unloaded, inventory is taken to make sure that containers are getting unloaded in the correct order. If those containers are not unloaded in the correct order or a container is missing, the ship will be unloaded again to make sure no errors are made. As for , a ship will be unloaded as quickly as possible. If a container was not unloaded and left on the ship, the ship will leave and will not come back. A beginner’s guide to ports.

At certain points in your Haskell development, you might plateau. This can happen to people at many stages, including right at the start. You get used to certain patterns in the language, and it’s hard to know where to go next. This is our first article on how to break out of these plateaus. Specifically, we’ll look at breaking out of a beginner’s plateau. To jump past the simple language constructs, you need to learn how to organize your Haskell code and incorporate other people’s code. Of course, you can’t make this jump if you’ve never started! Download our for some tools on starting out with Haskell. And read our for some more details on the basic language mechanics. Beginners Checklist Liftoff Series Organizing Your Project When I started writing my first Haskell project, it felt like I was trying to hold together steel beams with Elmer’s glue. I installed all my packages system-wide and only tested my code with GHCI and the command. This limited the development of the project and made it hard for me to incorporate anything new. runghc Generally, you’ll either be building a library for other people to use, or an executable program. And you want to be able to organize everything involved in that so you can coherently run and test what you’ve created. To do this, you need to learn one of the package management tools for Haskell. The oldest system in common use is Cabal. Cabal allows you to install Haskell packages. It also allows you to organize your project, install executables, and run tests with ease. Check out the for more information on using Cabal on its own. user guide Cabal has some gotchas though. So if you’re a beginner, I strongly recommend using . Stack adds another layer on top of Cabal, and it simplifies many of Cabal’s difficulties. To learn more about Stack, you can take our free ! Stack Stack mini-course With either of these, there are three main takeaways. You should declare all your dependencies in 1–2 files. The final product of your project, should be explicitly declared in your file. Finally, you should be able to run all your tests with a single command. .cabal Hackage Stack and Cabal both make it easy to bring in dependencies. But how do you know what other libraries you can use, and what their functions are? The main source of Haskell libraries is . You should get used to the idea of googling Haskell functions, and finding the package you need on Hackage. Once you’ve found a function you want to use, you should get used to this pattern: Hackage What module is this function is? What package is that module part of? Add this package to your file and import the module into your code. .cabal Compile your code, make sure it works Sometimes, you’ll need code that isn’t on Hackage (Github, for instance). Stack has some special ways for you to incorporate that code. You’ll need an entry in the file instead of just the file. stack.yaml .cabal Hackage Gotchas While we’re discussing Hackage, there are some gotchas you should be aware of when perusing Haskell documentation. First, it’s important to keep an eye on the version of the package you’re using. On many occasions, I’ve found a discrepancy between the type I had in my program and the type in the documentation. Typically, I would google the package name, and get a link to the documentation for the . And types can sometimes change between versions, so that will definitely cause problems! wrong version A useful command is . It will show the version number for every package you are currently using. Then compare that number for your package to what is at the top of the Hackage page. If they don’t match, click the button in the top right. This will take you to the list of versions, where you can find the one you’re actually using! stack list-dependencies contents Another gotcha can occur when you know a function name and want to find it on Hackage. You’ll import it via a generic sounding module name. And then you’ll go to the documentation for that module and find that all you have is a list of re-exported modules. This can be frustrating, especially when those modules in turn re-export other modules. You have to do a full depth first search to try to find the function you’re after. In this situation, you’ll want help from some other tools. Hoogle and Hayoo Hackage does have a search function. But I’ve often had better luck with and . Both of these are search engines written for finding things on Hackage. They’ll both help you track down the actual module a function comes from. Hoogle Hayoo Hayoo especially does a good job with operators. Oftentimes, a simple google search will help you find a function with a normal sounding name (e.g. ). But Google searches are bad at finding special characters. But if you enter the specific operator in Hayoo, you have a great chance of finding the module you’re looking for! split Using Types My last piece of documentation related advice is to learn to use types. In truth, the type of a function is the most important piece of information you need. You can generally bring up GHCI and get the type of an expression. But oftentimes you’ll only see a type synonym that is not understandable. Also, you won’t be able to see the ways in which you can create something of a particular type. If the code and documentation are well organized, you can almost always do this on Hackage. This can help guide your development process so you can fill in missing holes. Making the Jump: Advancing Past Beginner Haskell

We have all seen them before, they look a bit like this: . That’s the hex code for the color red. However, what exactly does it mean? #ff0000 Hexadecimal Most of us have heard of binary before, but what about hexadecimal? Hexadecimal, sometimes known as ‘hex’ or ‘base 16’ is an alternative to binary, which is ‘base 2’. Hexadecimal can be used to store numbers. So how does it work? The Basics There are 16 possible characters in hexadecimal, they include 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E and F. Each character represents an integer from zero to fifteen. Now that we know what each of the characters mean, let’s start converting integers into hexadecimal. So let’s convert the number 2,087 into hexadecimal. Some Examples Let’s first start off by dividing 2,087 by 16. That should get us a result of 130 with a remainder of 7. According to our chart from above, 7 is also in hexadecimal, so now we need to set aside and divide 130 by 16. Our answer is 8 with a remainder of 2. On our chart, 2 is , so set that to the side and we need to divide 8 by 16. This will get us 0 with a remainder of 8, which translate to in hex. So we have our 3 results which are 7, 2 and 8. We will put them together in reverse order to get our hexadecimal value which means that 2,087 is . 0x is there to symbolize that it is a hex value. ‘7’ ‘7’ ‘2’ ‘8’ ‘0x827’ Let’s try another, this time we will try the number 255. First we need to divide 255 by 16. That will get us 15 with a remainder of 15. Now we take the remainder and line it up to our chart. 15 translate to , so we can save for later. Now we need to divide 15 by 16, which will get us 0 with a remainder of 15. We know that 15 translates to , which makes our result . ‘F’ ‘F’ ‘F’ ‘0xFF’ Color Codes Hex color codes usually look something like this: , but what does this mean? Well, let’s break it down! #ff0000 RGB RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue. These colors are the primary colors of light. An RBG value might look like this: . At first this may not look like much, but if we take a closer look, the first number represents red, second number represents green, and the third number represents blue. The values in those spots can range anywhere from 0, all the way up to 255. Let’s try to make some colors! rgb(255, 0, 0) With light, red and blue makes magenta, so let’s try to make a magenta color with RGB. So to get a bright magenta color, let’s set both blue and red to their maximum value of 255. So we have: , which gives us a color like this: rgb(255, 0, 255) rgb(255, 0, 255) But what if we wanted it to be a bit lighter, like a more pinkish color? How do we do that? White in RBG is , all the colors combined. So how about we try changing to ? We get the result of a light pink. rgb(255, 255, 255) rgb(255, 0, 255) rgb(255, 150, 255) rgb(255, 150, 255) So how about a darker color? So we can have a dark pink? In RGB, black is , so let’s bring our values closer to that. So let’s try . With that, I got this: rgb(0, 0, 0) rgb(150, 0, 150) rgb(150, 0, 150) Hex Colors Now that we have a good understanding of RGB, we can understand how hex colors work. A hex color will look something like this, . But what does this mean? Let’s combine what we know about RBG and Hexadecimal to figure it out. We know that 0xFF is 255 in hexadecimal, and 255 is the maximum value for RGB. If we see what #ff0000 is, we can see that it is a bright red color: #ff0000 #ff0000 What we can find out is that translate to . Let’s try to get our magenta color again, we know that it is , so let’s see what gets us. #ff0000 rgb(255, 0, 0) rgb(255, 0, 255) #ff00ff #ff00ff Awesome! We got our magenta color, now let’s try to get our lighter color again, but this time in hex. Our light magenta in RGB is rgb(255, 150, 255), so if we convert 150 into hex, 150 divided by 16 is 9 with a remainder of 6. 9 divided by 16 is 0 with a remainder of 9, making our hexadecimal value . The result is our hex color of #ff96ff, and when we see the result of that, we get our light magenta. ‘0x96’ #ff96ff Conclusion After reading this, you are able to understand how the hex colors work, how the first two characters are for the red, the next two for green, and the next two for blue for RGB colors. Hex colors, how do they work?

Computers. They just seem to be about everywhere now. As you look around, you can see many things that are considered computers. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a computer as . For example, you are reading this on a computer right now, maybe you watched some TV, and even the food you ate most likely originated from a factory with machines controlled by, guess what, a computer. Now, what does all of this have to do with ‘the job of the ’? Well, allow me to get to that. “a programmable usually electronic device that can store, retrieve, and process data” future Computers are Replacing Us We see this a lot and we might not know it. When we go to the grocery store, most grocery stores have a self-checkout line, where you do the job of the cashier, by yourself. That used to all be done by hand. You also see kiosks everywhere now, which does a job that a human once did. While we might not see this, factories are turning to robots, to get things done for faster, and a whole lot cheaper, as a result, many people are being left in the dust and out of a job. What I mentioned is just the tip of the iceberg, there are many more jobs that were replaced by computers, but being future forward, let’s think about jobs that might not be around within a few years. For example, public transportation. Not all of us take a train or a bus to work/school but besides the point, you need someone to drive that bus. We currently see companies like Waymo, which is Google’s self driving car project, with the goal to make self driving cars affordable and available to all. With this in the near future it wont be long until bus drivers, train engineers, taxi drivers, or operators of other popular forms of public transportation obsolete. Job of the Future So I just mentioned all this information, but what does this mean? Well as you noticed, the one thing that they all have in common is that they are all controlled by computers. Like any other computer, it is useless without software. Creating great software is the job of a computer programmer, software engineer, or whatever you’d like to call them. However, they all share the same common goal. Becoming a Developer Computer is very easy to understand, and it is just as easy to write. For example, look at this line of JavaScript: programming console.log(“Hello World”); Now what exactly does that code do? Well it logs to the console, “Hello World”. Now how does one go from an app that says “Hello World” to say an app like Facebook or Twitter? The easiest way to describe computer programing is just a bunch of logic. If this is true, then do this, otherwise, do that. This is done in an ‘if-else’ statement. if (2 + 2 === 4) {console.log(“It’s true”);} else {console.log(“It’s false”);} While these if-else statements aren’t too hard to do, what if you want some practice? A good way I believe to learn the basics is a tool called Scratch. While Scratch might seem like just a little game used by children, it is a great way to learn the basics of computer programming and learning the logic behind it. While Scratch can’t make you anything that is too advanced, I still highly recommend it. Check it out . here From Zero, to Hero So you just learned the basics and you now understand the logic behind computer programming, so now what’s next? Now is time to get some action, to start building you first application in the language of your choice. A fairly popular one is Python, however, you can do other languages like Swift for iOS, Java for Android and other devices, or if you like web development JavaScript. I personally started with PHP. To learn, there are multiple ways to learn, you can take a course, watch YouTube videos, or even figure things out yourself if you are up to the challenge. Udemy Most people, tend to go for the courses, and one of the best places to find courses is a site called Udemy. I’ve used Udemy a few times before and you can find quite a few courses on there. I don’t really have any recommendations but search for and wonderful courses will show up. Check out Udemy . “learn [your desired programming language]” here Pluralsight Another option for online courses is Pluralsight, which many friends have recommended to me. They offer a 10-day free trial, but if you are signed up with Microsoft Imagine, you can get a 90-day free trial. If that’s the case, then take a look around, some community colleges offer courses that you can take, sometimes for free, to learn computer programming. While these are some ways that most people do it, this is not the way that I learned how to code.
