With Bumper now operational on Arbitrum, we can access real data, allowing us to aggregate and interpret position information and protocol performance. This shift from simulated to real data provides tangible validation of Bumper’s performance, especially in light of recent market fluctuations caused by the announcement. Bitcoin ETF ‍ TLDR; Bitcoin saw a 17% drop during the ETF announcement period Bumper-hedged position premiums cost an average of 0.1% of position size (5% annualized) This cost was 96% cheaper than observed put options premiums (via Deribit) for equivalent positions Bumper users saw, on average, a 9% price drop over the period of their hedge position. But the value of their position only dropped 1% as they were protected at a 99% floor. ‍ BTC ETF Announcement Impact The long-anticipated approval of a Bitcoin ETF by the SEC created significant speculation and volatility in the crypto market. On 11 January 2024, the SEC finally approved multiple spot Bitcoin ETF filings after a little commotion caused by a ‘hacked’ X account announcement. In our pre-announcement , we discussed two strategies for hedging wBTC with Bumper, recognizing the uncertainty as an opportune moment for crypto holders to safeguard their assets against potential losses. Trading Chat Livestream ‍ Bumpering your assets As it turned out, opening a hedging position with Bumper proved a very wise trading decision, as the subsequent drop in Bitcoin's value justified the need for such risk management tools. Before the official announcement, Bitcoin surged to nearly $48,000, settling to just above $46,000 post-ETF approval. Despite expectations of increased mainstream capital, Bitcoin hovered around $43,000 before falling closer to $41,000. The market volatility triggered nearly $20 million in liquidations, with the majority stemming from long positions. Over the seven days following the high, Bitcoin’s price fell 17%, placing Bumper Taker positions opened at the high and with a price floor above 85% in a position to claim USDT. Thereby outperforming the market and either rebuying at the lower price or strategizing their next move. ‍ Protocol Performance Throughout this period, the protocol remained solvent with a stable TVL, excluding any deposits and closures. As the leading crypto options exchange, we used Deribit to compare premiums for equivalent positions. On 11 Jan 2024, there were 23 Put Options sold at a 7-day term and 99% floor level. For these positions on Deribit, the average annualized premia was 148%, with a minimum of 131% and a maximum of 160%. When comparing Deribit to Bumper, the premium for buying an equivalent Put Option would have been 2,883% (yes, nearly three thousand percent!) more expensive or better said as Bumper was 96% cheaper! ‍ Position Cost Summary With solid indicative numbers flowing through, it’s important to acknowledge that the protocol is still in its early days on Arbitrum mainnet and will continue to receive technical refinement to ensure a balance between competitive premiums for Takers and attractive yields for Makers. However, the compelling numbers strongly suggest that Bumper not only offers a novel approach to trading downside volatility but also proves to be a cost-effective solution compared to the cheapest market competitor out there. ‍ Future Opportunities Bumper's performance as a robust risk management tool positions it favorably for increased future use. The Opinions domain is focused on generating diverse, realistic pieces about one’s opinions on eating vegetables and plant-based foods - the diversity measure is based on the sentiment of opinions on this topic (e.g. shown in example texts in the Figure 2 overview). For the Stories domain, the topic is about a short story, containing two characters: a spy, and a politician. The diversity of stories is evaluated using a variety of measures based on AI Feedback, with the main ones being: Stories - Genre (Romance vs Horror) (1D archive), Stories - Ending (Happy vs Tragic) (1D archive), and Stories - Genre and Ending (2D archive). These domains capture the strengths and limitations of all methods, ranging from simple (Opinions) to challenging (Stories - Genre and Ending). We show in Figure 1 that the 2D domain is challenging, yet QDAIF still outperforms the baseline in filling the archive with diverse, high-quality stories. The AI feedback prompts are outlined in Appendix A.23. To assess the performance of methods in creative writing generation, we compute QD scores (Pugh et al., 2016), a standard metric used to measure the quality-diversity of the discovered corpus of texts. A QD score is defined as the sum of the highest quality values found in each bin. To understand the alignment between AI and human feedback for practical applications in QDAIF, we conducted a human evaluation study on selected elite samples from each method (chosen from the median QD score run out of 5 random seed runs). Using a Likert scale (Allen & Seaman, 2007) for quality assessment, we evaluate the capability of each method to produce a collection of diverse, high-quality texts. To do so we calculate a “human” QD score, defined as the sum of quality scores given for all diversity categories identified by the annotator within the set. Furthermore, to understand how closely AI feedback aligns with human perspectives on subjective evaluation, we measured the agreement rates between human annotators and AI and between two human annotators. Details of the human study are specified in Appendix A.1, demonstrating the validity and advantages of AI feedback in generating human-like feedback on subjective quality and diversity measures. Evaluation. 4.2 COMPARISONS BETWEEN QDAIF AND BASELINES To evaluate the strengths and limitations of QDAIF in generating high-quality and diverse creative writing texts, we compared our method against the following baseline methods: • Fixed-Few-Shot: Use a fixed few-shot prompt (cf. Appendix A.21) to sample many completions for creative domain texts (i.e. no iterative search). • Shuffling-Few-Shot: Shuffle the in-context examples of Fixed-Few-Shot prompt, before sampling the completion from this prompt. • Random-Search: Create a prompt pool of examples (initialized from examples in Appendix A.21), add all completions from few-shot prompting to the pool, and choose fewshot examples from the growing pool (without pool size limit). • LMX, Quality-Only: Maintain a pool as in Random-Search, but only up to 100 highestquality completions (as evaluated by AI Feedback) are kept in the pool (i.e. iterative search focused only on quality). Single-objective LMX as in Meyerson et al. (2023). We choose a variety of baselines, some highlighting representative alternative approaches (e.g. fewshot prompting), and ablations of QDAIF, to validate our algorithmic choices. For example, FixedFew-Shot and Shuffling-Few-Shot enable the generation of different texts (relying on stochastic sampling), while being constrained to the output distribution of the fixed set of in-context examples. Random-Search and LMX, Quality-Only are methods where the (prompt) pool of examples that we can sample from grows in size, starting from an initial pool. In contrast to QDAIF, RandomSearch is limited by the lack of constraints in the prompt pool, especially in maintaining the quality of the growing pool through evaluation. LMX, Quality-Only adds a quality-based evaluation step with AI feedback that optimizes the quality of texts in the pool over time to contain only texts with high quality scores, but is not designed to encourage diversity in texts in comparison to QDAIF. For each domain and baseline described above, we recorded runs for 2000 iterations, repeated with 5 different random seeds. To enable comparisons with baselines, AI feedback is used to compute the quality and diversity measures for all iteration outputs. Similar to QDAIF, the baseline methods use hand-written examples in Appendix A.21, either in a fixed prompt or as the initial prompt pool. We report results comparing the QD score performance for the different methods of generating creative writing texts in Figure 3. We computed the mean, and the bootstrapped 95% confidence intervals (CI) from 100k resamples, across 5 random seeds of runs. We noticed that QDAIF achieves significantly better QD scores than all baseline methods in Opinions and Stories. The broader range of texts generated by QDAIF is also evident qualitatively. For example, in the Stories - Genre and Ending domain, while the baseline methods deliver straightforward and more predictable stories of how the spy "pulled out a knife and stabbed [the politician] to death", QDAIF generates a more dramatic story of how the spy "transformed into the monster and killed everyone". Random-Search is the worst-performing method overall, with significantly lower QD score performance in Opinions and Stories - Genre compared to the best-performing baselines. Interestingly, LMX, Quality-Only does not significantly outperform the methods using a fixed population prompt pool (Fixed-Few-Shot and Shuffling-Few-Shot). On Stories - Genre, LMX, Quality-Only is often weaker than Fixed-Few-Shot and Shuffling-Few-Shot. The results show that single-objective optimization cannot guide the search for diverse, high-quality texts alone. Furthermore, we found that QDAIF outperforms other (diversity-seeking baselines), as well as extensions of those baselines with quality filters, becoming more similar to QDAIF (cf. Appendix A.8). Performance Comparison. We report the results of the human study comparing QDAIF and baseline samples in Table 1. We observe that compared to baselines, QDAIF is competitive with or better at discovering diverse, high-quality texts in Opinions and Stories according to human feedback. QDAIF sets also showed high agreement between humans and AI feedback on the diversity categories of presented texts, as well as between two annotators, competitive with Fixed-Few-Shot. Although the average perceived quality of texts is better from Fixed-Few-Shot, this is not enough for bringing high-quality examples for different niches of outputs (i.e. higher QD score). Furthermore, Shuffling-Few-Shot demonstrates even lower human evaluation scores, despite the use of the same fixed set of hand-written seeds, indicating lower robustness due to the use of different ordering of few-shot examples. Prior work hints at the sensitivity of LMs to few-shot prompt ordering, with task-solving capabilities varying significantly due to this ordering (Lu et al., 2021). The gap in human-evaluated performance between Fixed-Few-Shot and Shuffling-Few-Shot indicates that reliance on fixed prompts is less likely to enable reliable search, in contrast to the robustness shown by QDAIF. Additionally, Random-Search and LMX, Quality-Only obtained even lower human evaluation scores, even though the methods either explore different prompts or optimize for the quality of texts. We provide a detailed discussion (for baseline methods) on findings from the subjective study of the discovered texts in Appendix A.15, as well as the qualitative behavior of the text search over time in Appendix A.16. Through guided evolutionary search, QDAIF surpasses all baseline methods in terms of computed QD score performance, and is competitive (or better) compared to baselines, according to human evaluation. Human Feedback Evaluation. 4.3 EXTENSIONS TO AI FEEDBACK AND MUTATION MODEL In addition to experiments with QDAIF described in previous sections, we investigated the effects on the performance due to variations of the method. We used larger versions of the LMX models (30B and 70B) for mutation, and compared it to the performance of the 13B model (default). While no relationship was found between model size and QD score, quality ratings from human feedback improved with outputs from larger models (described in detail in Appendix A.3). LMX Model Size. We compared the performance of QDAIF on the Stories - Genre domain when we prompted our AI feedback model for diversity measures given 2-shot, 4-shot, and 8-shot prompts. Using a higher number of few-shots led to improvements in human quality ratings of texts. Further discussion and results are highlighted in Appendix A.4. Few-Shot AI Feedback. Ideally, QDAIF would be simpler if it could be run without seed examples (e.g. requesting a story from an instruction-following LM). We investigated the potential of QDAIF when the solution population is initialized from zero-shot prompted generations, and evolved using LMX. Initial results on Opinions and Stories along with prior work discussion are shown in Appendix A.5, highlighting comparable performance in terms of QD score, with divergence observed in alignment with human preferences. We also find that QDAIF, in these domains, is robust to the mechanism of generating variation. Appendix A.6 describes an alternative mutation method (based on a more gradual few-shot replacement operation) that is more effective in some circumstances, although in general offers comparable performance. We provide a detailed discussion (for QDAIF methods) on findings from the subjective study of the discovered texts in Appendix A.13, as well as the qualitative behavior of the text search over time in Appendix A.14. Varying Initialization and Mutation Method. There may be many ways of leveraging LMs to generate variation (including finetuning models; see Appendix A.11), and this is an exciting avenue of future research. 4.4 EVOLVING SOLUTIONS THROUGH INSTRUCTION GUIDANCE This experiment explores scaling up QDAIF to a more capable model, GPT-4 (OpenAI, 2023), in the challenging task of generating poetry, highlighting how QDAIF will benefit from advances in model capabilities. The aim of the Poetry domain is to produce high-quality poems with varying genres and emotional tones, unrestricted by topic. Here, the MAP-Elites archive has two axes of diversity: genre and tone, and they are delineated using categorical labels. The genre axis has the labels "haiku", "sonnet", "ballad", "limerick", and "hymn", while the tone axis has the labels of "happy", "dark", "mysterious", "romantic", and "reflective". We created a new mutation operator, LMX-rewrite, for this domain, that leverages instruction-following to tell a model to translate a parent poem into an offspring with different diversity characteristics. To generate a new solution, we prompt GPT-4 to rewrite the selected poem into an inspired, different poem: Inspired by this poem, write a new poem of very high, award winning quality with a different poetic genre (format and form) and tone compared to the poem above. We used GPT-4 to determine the genre and tone of a poem and rate its quality. For quality, we prompt GPT-4 to Rate the quality of the above poem on a scale from 1 to 10. To determine the diversity attributes, we prompt GPT-4 to determine which genre or tone is the poem closest to. For example, to determine genre, we ask GPT-4: What genre is this poem closest to from the following list: ["haiku", "sonnet", "ballad", "limerick", "hymn"]? Appendix A.30 shows the full prompts and setup. We observed high consistency in GPT-4’s responses; across multiple LM calls, quality ratings for the same poem fluctuated by no more than a single point. We show qualitative examples of poems with their AI feedback evaluations in Appendix A.19. In this setup, all methods are run for 200 iterations, and QDAIF is benchmarked against the baseline, Random-Poems, as well as an ablation method, Fixed Seed Rewrite. Random-Poems simply generates 200 random poems. Fixed Seed Rewrite rewrites only the seed poem in Appendix A.30, without evolutionary search. We found that QDAIF achieves a higher QD score of 130 (CI: 118 - 145) in comparison to RandomPoems with 76 (CI: 67 - 85) and Fixed Seed Rewrite with 99 (CI: 72 - 117). We observed a similar trend (with a wider performance gap between QDAIF and other methods) when we used GPT-3.5-Turbo for the generation step instead of GPT-4 while keeping GPT-4 as the evaluator (cf. Appendix A.17). QDAIF was shown to have greater QD score performance than the other methods according to the Mann-Whitney U Test (p ≤ 0.05). Still, QDAIF with LMX-rewrite fails to discover solutions in some bins (e.g. limericks). For this, we can adapt QDAIF by adding guidance on the desired (randomly chosen) genre and tone for rewriting (LMX-guided). The performance of this method of QDAIF is on par with a Targeted-Poems approach (generating high-quality poems of randomly chosen genre and tone per step) in terms of QD score, and even better when using an older version of GPT-4 (cf. Appendix A.17). Furthermore, we found that the rewriting step is useful for generating poems that can meaningfully preserve inspiration from parent poems, enabling users to control with more nuance the outcomes of search, through approximating the iterative refinement typical of human creative processes (Stanley et al., 2017) (see Appendix A.18). Figure 4 highlights the potential of QDAIF with GPT-4, especially in controlling a set of solutions subjectively aligned with AI feedback labels. QDAIF is even demonstrated for practical applicability to a domain outside of creative writing, for solving coding problems (cf. Appendix A.20). Overall, results highlight that diversity suffers when prompting models without explicit diversity guidance (Renda et al., 2023; Friedrich et al., 2023; Kirk et al., 2023), and that evolution with a rewriting mutation operator can lead to more human-influenceable, diverse, and high-quality solutions. The Sergeant, satisfied Bobby was restrained once more, said, “I’ll get a zip-tie.” “Get a bunch,” Ryan answered. He held the service revolver pointed at Becky’s head. He took note of all present and smiled. Everyone froze in place, except Jack, who ducked behind a lawn chair. Bobby pushed Nick away and regained his feet. Personally, I’ve got stuck frequently on questions starting with “tell me about the case in your experience when…” Immediately after such a question, a monkey started singing in my head, and I could remember nothing like I’ve got no experience at all. Sounds familiar? In this article, I’ll tell you how I have successfully overcome this situation preparing myself a complete list of cases to talk about. Following my path, you’ll easily end up with your own set of cases and be ready to rock on your next job interview. I’ve analyzed my experience both as an applicant and as an interviewer, a number of articles and discussion threads on the Internet, and came up with a list of questions that covers 80% of interview discussions about your previous experience. If you think them through, it will be really hard to surprise you during the interview. My suggestion is to prepare answers for these questions and be ready to swap them around adjusting to the actual discussion. You can even write the answers down and revise them from time to time. It will be much easier, more effective, and less stressful than answering everything from scratch. 1. Your Background in 3 Minutes Everything starts with a general discussion about your experience. You can think of it as an elevator pitch where the project you are pitching is you. This is one of the most important parts as it creates your initial impression. My list has the following options to consider: Make it brief. Try to fit your speech into 3 minutes so that you have enough time for the interview itself. This is only an ice cracker. Indicate your major accomplishments in each company. You are trying to sell yourself, not just telling your story. Try to leave hooks for the prepared cases in your speech, as it frames the context for the whole discussion. Let further questions flow from it. Indicate reasons for leaving each company in a few words. In this case, you won’t need to discuss it further. Be sure to reflect on your development as a professional. Your experience and accomplishments should be like pieces of a puzzle presenting your best traits in a couple of minutes. Rehearse it a couple of times. You should express confidence and calm. 2. Successes You Are Proud Of Now, let’s dive into cases. Success case is a must-have one, I don’t think I need to explain why. What I suggest to prepare here: Think big and try to find an example of some major accomplishment. The fresher the better, interviewers prefer to discuss recent cases as they are probably more relevant to interviewers’ needs. Explain the reason you’ve selected this exact case. It can showcase what motivates and inspires you. It would be just perfect if your success case reflects at least something from the following list of cases: data interaction, user research, team leadership, stakeholder management, or tough decisions. That’s how you can kill two birds with one stone. 3. Lessons Learned From Failure This one is even more popular than the success case. But remember that you don’t have to put all your dirty clothes out and repent for your sins. Even your failure should showcase your best features, so: Again think big. Try to stay on the positive trek, and look for a case where everything ended OK, but could have been much better. Indicate how you have fixed the situation and what you have learned from it, even if you were not asked about it. 4. Data Interpretation Ability As a product manager, you are expected to deal with data. Almost every company tries to check your ability to analyze data, run AB-testing, interpret statistics, etc. The best you can do is to include data interpretation in success and failure cases. However, in order to be 100% safe, you can also have a separate case in your pocket. Think about the following: Numbers were questionable, but you managed to deal with it and found the truth. There were way too many data sources and you were capable of understanding what was going on. You’ve checked your hypothesis with the help of sophisticated metrics. And don’t forget to use real numbers anywhere you can. Otherwise, you are risking sounding ungrounded and shallow. 5. User Research and Insights The next must-have for a PM is to be user-oriented when making product decisions. Try to include user research, customer development interviews, or any other user interaction in your cases. Unexpected Situations This one shouldn’t be hard as the PM's life consists of unexpected situations. Prepare the case where everything didn’t go according to plan, and explain how easily you dealt with it. Again, think of something big and fresh. 8. Team Leadership Now, it’s time to focus on the team and your leadership skills. Showcase the situation where you spearheaded the project and lead the team to success. If it was not initially intended to be led by you – it would be just perfect! 9. Conflict Resolution When it comes to people management, you should also prepare an example of a conflict situation that you were able to resolve successfully. As you don’t want to appear confrontational, think about the case where you were involved but you weren’t the reason for the conflict. I’d rather avoid speaking about intense situations which can make you emotional. Try to select a case where you can present every side of the conflict without extra judgments. 10. Tough Deadlines and Resources Another useful example is a case where you had to deliver some results with tough deadlines and limited resources. Almost every business wants to have managers who can save time and money –– showcase your ability to do that. 11. Strengths and Weaknesses Now, let’s touch on a couple of generic questions starting with your strengths and weaknesses. Or your drivers and limitations. Or your superpowers and pain points. Here are my thoughts on it: 3 is a great number, try to come up with a list of 3 drivers and 3 limitations. Less is not so convincing, while more is hard to perceive. Try to make these lists versatile: one thing about the product work, another about the teamwork, and one more about your personality, for example. Remember to focus on the positive parts. If you speak about your pain points, specify how you deal with them. Even your weaknesses should showcase your strengths. 12. What Are You Looking For in a New Job? This question is very important even if no one asks you about it during the interview. Not only because your interviewers should check whether what you are looking for correlates with their expectations. But you also should be able to test whether the company can give you what you want. That’s why try to answer as honestly as possible when it comes to what  you expect from your future job. And be ready to present it briefly within 3 bullet points. 13*. Bonus: How to Make Your Favorite Product Better? Bonus part. I don’t know why, but I was asked this question at least once at each round of my job search: 10 years ago, 7 years ago, 5 years ago, and now. That’s why I suggest you have an answer to it: what is your favorite product and how can you make it better? You can adjust the answer for each company to connect with the actual industry and the company’s values. Apple released its fiscal Q1 2023 financial results on Feb. 2, and it was one of the least impressive quarters for the business in recent memory. For the first time in close to four years, Apple's quarterly revenues declined. The report shows that the company just experienced its largest decline since 2016 and its first decline since 2019. Products revenue was $96.4 billion, down 8% from last year, Mac revenue was $7.7 billion, down 29% year over year, and overall revenue was down more than 5% year over year. This was in part due to the company's failure to match sales from the same quarter last year across the majority of its hardware segments and production setbacks in China that limited its capacity to deliver its flagship iPhones - iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max according to Apple’s CEO, Tom Cook statement in the call. Explaining the reasons for the downturn, CEO Tim Cook mentioned three things, A challenging foreign exchange environment Covid-19 related constraints Difficult macroeconomic climate However, the iPad and services, which include products like Apple Music and TV+, iCloud, and AppleCare, were the two areas of the company that did experience growth. Services saw an increase of 6.4% to $20.77 billion, while iPad sales increased by 29.66% to $9.4 billion. Despite the business's overall difficulties in China, CFO Luca Maestri notes that the company nonetheless achieved records for services revenue in Greater China during the December quarter and for all of the Americas, Europe, and the rest of Asia Pacific. “We now have more than 935 million paid subscriptions across the services on our platform, up more than 150 million during the last 12 months alone and nearly four times what we had just five years ago,” CFO Luca Maestri said in the earring call that the holiday shopping season was a period purchases made using one of its service products hit an all-time high “And we continue to increase the reach and improve the quality of our offerings. For instance, Apple Pay is now available to millions of merchants in nearly 70 countries and regions. And we saw a record-breaking number of purchases made using Apple Pay globally during the holiday shopping season.” Cloud services, payment services, music, and the App Store and AppleCare all established quarterly sales records in the company's December quarter. The company also had an all-time high across all geographic segments in its installed base and Lucas mentioned two reasons for this performance, one was that the company encountered substantial supply restrictions during the December quarter the previous year, whereas this year, they had enough supply to meet demand. Secondly, during the quarter, they introduced a new iPad and the iPad Pro with the M2 chip. Apple didn't offer any revenue guidance for the current quarter, which ends in March, according to Lucas, the macroeconomic uncertainty around the world is the reason for the lack of clarity. Although the company provided some information about performance expectations, the revenue trend for the March quarter will be comparable to that of the December quarter, according to Maestri, While services are slated to expand, sales of the Mac and iPad are expected to drop by double digits from the comparable period last year, and sales of the iPhone are anticipated to decline less in the March quarter than in the December quarter. Cook also stated that the company intends to further integrate AI into its product line. In response to a question from Wells Fargo securities analyst Aaron Rakers about the role of AI in the company’s strategy, he said: “It is a major focus of ours. It's incredible in terms of how it can enrich customers' lives…we see an enormous potential in this space to affect virtually everything we do. It's obviously a horizontal technology, not a vertical one. And so it will affect every product in every service that we have.”

A LIGHT SHINES ON MY WAY The year came round to Christmas-time, and I had been at home above two months. I had seen Agnes frequently. However loud the general voice might be in giving me encouragement, and however fervent the emotions and endeavours to which it roused me, I heard her lightest word of praise as I heard nothing else. At least once a week, and sometimes oftener, I rode over there, and passed the evening. I usually rode back at night; for the old unhappy sense was always hovering about me now—most sorrowfully when I left her—and I was glad to be up and out, rather than wandering over the past in weary wakefulness or miserable dreams. I wore away the longest part of many wild sad nights, in those rides; reviving, as I went, the thoughts that had occupied me in my long absence. Or, if I were to say rather that I listened to the echoes of those thoughts, I should better express the truth. They spoke to me from afar off. I had put them at a distance, and accepted my inevitable place. When I read to Agnes what I wrote; when I saw her listening face; moved her to smiles or tears; and heard her cordial voice so earnest on the shadowy events of that imaginative world in which I lived; I thought what a fate mine might have been—but only thought so, as I had thought after I was married to Dora, what I could have wished my wife to be. My duty to Agnes, who loved me with a love, which, if I disquieted, I wronged most selfishly and poorly, and could never restore; my matured assurance that I, who had worked out my own destiny, and won what I had impetuously set my heart on, had no right to murmur, and must bear; comprised what I felt and what I had learned. But I loved her: and now it even became some consolation to me, vaguely to conceive a distant day when I might blamelessly avow it; when all this should be over; when I could say ‘Agnes, so it was when I came home; and now I am old, and I never have loved since!’ She did not once show me any change in herself. What she always had been to me, she still was; wholly unaltered. Between my aunt and me there had been something, in this connexion, since the night of my return, which I cannot call a restraint, or an avoidance of the subject, so much as an implied understanding that we thought of it together, but did not shape our thoughts into words. When, according to our old custom, we sat before the fire at night, we often fell into this train; as naturally, and as consciously to each other, as if we had unreservedly said so. But we preserved an unbroken silence. I believed that she had read, or partly read, my thoughts that night; and that she fully comprehended why I gave mine no more distinct expression. This Christmas-time being come, and Agnes having reposed no new confidence in me, a doubt that had several times arisen in my mind—whether she could have that perception of the true state of my breast, which restrained her with the apprehension of giving me pain—began to oppress me heavily. If that were so, my sacrifice was nothing; my plainest obligation to her unfulfilled; and every poor action I had shrunk from, I was hourly doing. I resolved to set this right beyond all doubt;—if such a barrier were between us, to break it down at once with a determined hand. It was—what lasting reason have I to remember it!—a cold, harsh, winter day. There had been snow, some hours before; and it lay, not deep, but hard-frozen on the ground. Out at sea, beyond my window, the wind blew ruggedly from the north. I had been thinking of it, sweeping over those mountain wastes of snow in Switzerland, then inaccessible to any human foot; and had been speculating which was the lonelier, those solitary regions, or a deserted ocean. ‘Riding today, Trot?’ said my aunt, putting her head in at the door. ‘Yes,’ said I, ‘I am going over to Canterbury. It’s a good day for a ride.’ ‘I hope your horse may think so too,’ said my aunt; ‘but at present he is holding down his head and his ears, standing before the door there, as if he thought his stable preferable.’ My aunt, I may observe, allowed my horse on the forbidden ground, but had not at all relented towards the donkeys. ‘He will be fresh enough, presently!’ said I. ‘The ride will do his master good, at all events,’ observed my aunt, glancing at the papers on my table. ‘Ah, child, you pass a good many hours here! I never thought, when I used to read books, what work it was to write them.’ ‘It’s work enough to read them, sometimes,’ I returned. ‘As to the writing, it has its own charms, aunt.’ ‘Ah! I see!’ said my aunt. ‘Ambition, love of approbation, sympathy, and much more, I suppose? Well: go along with you!’ ‘Do you know anything more,’ said I, standing composedly before her—she had patted me on the shoulder, and sat down in my chair—‘of that attachment of Agnes?’ She looked up in my face a little while, before replying: ‘I think I do, Trot.’ ‘Are you confirmed in your impression?’ I inquired. ‘I think I am, Trot.’ She looked so steadfastly at me: with a kind of doubt, or pity, or suspense in her affection: that I summoned the stronger determination to show her a perfectly cheerful face. ‘And what is more, Trot—’ said my aunt. ‘Yes!’ ‘I think Agnes is going to be married.’ ‘God bless her!’ said I, cheerfully. ‘God bless her!’ said my aunt, ‘and her husband too!’ I echoed it, parted from my aunt, and went lightly downstairs, mounted, and rode away. There was greater reason than before to do what I had resolved to do. How well I recollect the wintry ride! The frozen particles of ice, brushed from the blades of grass by the wind, and borne across my face; the hard clatter of the horse’s hoofs, beating a tune upon the ground; the stiff-tilled soil; the snowdrift, lightly eddying in the chalk-pit as the breeze ruffled it; the smoking team with the waggon of old hay, stopping to breathe on the hill-top, and shaking their bells musically; the whitened slopes and sweeps of Down-land lying against the dark sky, as if they were drawn on a huge slate! I found Agnes alone. The little girls had gone to their own homes now, and she was alone by the fire, reading. She put down her book on seeing me come in; and having welcomed me as usual, took her work-basket and sat in one of the old-fashioned windows. I sat beside her on the window-seat, and we talked of what I was doing, and when it would be done, and of the progress I had made since my last visit. Agnes was very cheerful; and laughingly predicted that I should soon become too famous to be talked to, on such subjects. ‘So I make the most of the present time, you see,’ said Agnes, ‘and talk to you while I may.’ As I looked at her beautiful face, observant of her work, she raised her mild clear eyes, and saw that I was looking at her. ‘You are thoughtful today, Trotwood!’ ‘Agnes, shall I tell you what about? I came to tell you.’ She put aside her work, as she was used to do when we were seriously discussing anything; and gave me her whole attention. ‘My dear Agnes, do you doubt my being true to you?’ ‘No!’ she answered, with a look of astonishment. ‘Do you doubt my being what I always have been to you?’ ‘No!’ she answered, as before. ‘Do you remember that I tried to tell you, when I came home, what a debt of gratitude I owed you, dearest Agnes, and how fervently I felt towards you?’ ‘I remember it,’ she said, gently, ‘very well.’ ‘You have a secret,’ said I. ‘Let me share it, Agnes.’ She cast down her eyes, and trembled. ‘I could hardly fail to know, even if I had not heard—but from other lips than yours, Agnes, which seems strange—that there is someone upon whom you have bestowed the treasure of your love. Do not shut me out of what concerns your happiness so nearly! If you can trust me, as you say you can, and as I know you may, let me be your friend, your brother, in this matter, of all others!’ With an appealing, almost a reproachful, glance, she rose from the window; and hurrying across the room as if without knowing where, put her hands before her face, and burst into such tears as smote me to the heart. And yet they awakened something in me, bringing promise to my heart. Without my knowing why, these tears allied themselves with the quietly sad smile which was so fixed in my remembrance, and shook me more with hope than fear or sorrow. ‘Agnes! Sister! Dearest! What have I done?’ ‘Let me go away, Trotwood. I am not well. I am not myself. I will speak to you by and by—another time. I will write to you. Don’t speak to me now. Don’t! don’t!’ I sought to recollect what she had said, when I had spoken to her on that former night, of her affection needing no return. It seemed a very world that I must search through in a moment. ‘Agnes, I cannot bear to see you so, and think that I have been the cause. My dearest girl, dearer to me than anything in life, if you are unhappy, let me share your unhappiness. If you are in need of help or counsel, let me try to give it to you. If you have indeed a burden on your heart, let me try to lighten it. For whom do I live now, Agnes, if it is not for you!’ ‘Oh, spare me! I am not myself! Another time!’ was all I could distinguish. Was it a selfish error that was leading me away? Or, having once a clue to hope, was there something opening to me that I had not dared to think of? ‘I must say more. I cannot let you leave me so! For Heaven’s sake, Agnes, let us not mistake each other after all these years, and all that has come and gone with them! I must speak plainly. If you have any lingering thought that I could envy the happiness you will confer; that I could not resign you to a dearer protector, of your own choosing; that I could not, from my removed place, be a contented witness of your joy; dismiss it, for I don’t deserve it! I have not suffered quite in vain. You have not taught me quite in vain. There is no alloy of self in what I feel for you.’ She was quiet now. In a little time, she turned her pale face towards me, and said in a low voice, broken here and there, but very clear: ‘I owe it to your pure friendship for me, Trotwood—which, indeed, I do not doubt—to tell you, you are mistaken. I can do no more. If I have sometimes, in the course of years, wanted help and counsel, they have come to me. If I have sometimes been unhappy, the feeling has passed away. If I have ever had a burden on my heart, it has been lightened for me. If I have any secret, it is—no new one; and is—not what you suppose. I cannot reveal it, or divide it. It has long been mine, and must remain mine.’ ‘Agnes! Stay! A moment!’ She was going away, but I detained her. I clasped my arm about her waist. ‘In the course of years!’ ‘It is not a new one!’ New thoughts and hopes were whirling through my mind, and all the colours of my life were changing. ‘Dearest Agnes! Whom I so respect and honour—whom I so devotedly love! When I came here today, I thought that nothing could have wrested this confession from me. I thought I could have kept it in my bosom all our lives, till we were old. But, Agnes, if I have indeed any new-born hope that I may ever call you something more than Sister, widely different from Sister!—’ Her tears fell fast; but they were not like those she had lately shed, and I saw my hope brighten in them. ‘Agnes! Ever my guide, and best support! If you had been more mindful of yourself, and less of me, when we grew up here together, I think my heedless fancy never would have wandered from you. But you were so much better than I, so necessary to me in every boyish hope and disappointment, that to have you to confide in, and rely upon in everything, became a second nature, supplanting for the time the first and greater one of loving you as I do!’ Still weeping, but not sadly—joyfully! And clasped in my arms as she had never been, as I had thought she never was to be! ‘When I loved Dora—fondly, Agnes, as you know—’ ‘Yes!’ she cried, earnestly. ‘I am glad to know it!’ ‘When I loved her—even then, my love would have been incomplete, without your sympathy. I had it, and it was perfected. And when I lost her, Agnes, what should I have been without you, still!’ Closer in my arms, nearer to my heart, her trembling hand upon my shoulder, her sweet eyes shining through her tears, on mine! ‘I went away, dear Agnes, loving you. I stayed away, loving you. I returned home, loving you!’ And now, I tried to tell her of the struggle I had had, and the conclusion I had come to. I tried to lay my mind before her, truly, and entirely. I tried to show her how I had hoped I had come into the better knowledge of myself and of her; how I had resigned myself to what that better knowledge brought; and how I had come there, even that day, in my fidelity to this. I could not discover whether my aunt, in her last short conversation with me, had fallen on a pious fraud, or had really mistaken the state of my mind. It was quite enough, she said, that she had told me Agnes was going to be married; and that I now knew better than anyone how true it was. We were married within a fortnight. Traddles and Sophy, and Doctor and Mrs. Strong, were the only guests at our quiet wedding. We left them full of joy; and drove away together. What’s our greatest concern about work? We may not think about it consciously, but it drives all our actions at work. How can I do great work to get noticed, rewarded, recognized, and appreciated? Not rewarded in a monetary sense, but knowing that your work makes a difference, it adds value to others, people count on you, they respect and value your advice, or your actions move the organization forward. Knowing that your work is impactful is more rewarding than any material benefits or words of praise. In other words, we all think about “How can I truly stand out?” No one heads to work thinking I am going to do mediocre work today and then head home and binge-watch Netflix. Ok, maybe a few. But, most of us don’t. People who care about doing great work take pride in what they do. They like to make an impact and they do not work to simply earn a livelihood. Their work adds deeper meaning and purpose to their life. Yet, those who are really good at what they do, don’t necessarily stand out. Look around you. Do people you admire and appreciate at work the best and brightest in their line of work? Is there something about their behavior that makes you like them more than others? What qualities do they possess? Who’s more valuable? The developer who can churn out 1000 lines of perfect code in an hour or the one who goes out of their way to fix a critical bug in production and saves the company thousands of dollars in lost revenue and customer trust. A leader with extraordinary technical prowess or one who takes a genuine interest in your growth. A person who gives you critical feedback to help you improve because they care or the one who says nice things only to make you feel good. Being good at what you do is only a necessary condition, it’s not sufficient. What’s missing from the equation are the powerful behaviors that can make you truly stand out. Meeting deadlines and achieving set goals does not qualify for extraordinary work or make others value you. It’s business as usual. What matters is how you operate, how you interact with others, or how you look beyond the outcomes to generate value. You do not need to go out of your way to get noticed. You only need to adopt a set of simple behaviors that can make you effective in everything you do. Over the years, I noticed 8 behaviors over and over again that made people influential, impactful and drove them forward. Adopting these behaviors and practicing them will bring about the biggest positive change in your work life. 8 powerful behaviors to stand out at work 1. Orient towards action Pointing out flaws in what’s not working and what’s not so good is easy. Those who do that speak up to establish their smartness. They may think they are adding value, but really all they do is annoy others. It’s the ones who roll up their sleeves, who grab opportunities, who take risks, who put out fires, or who actually go out and fix the problem that grabs everyone’s attention. They don’t let bureaucratic nonsense or processes be an excuse for inaction. They find ways to actually make things happen. While others are still deliberating, they turn their deliberation into action. Their willingness to get the ball rolling and to get things moving shows a clear bias for action. Chuck Close, painter, artist and photographer once said “Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself.” Since 95 percent of the people are imitators and only 5 percent initiators, people are persuaded more by the actions of others than by any proof we can offer - Robert B. Cialdini Get past your fears. Get things done. Have a strong bias for action even in the face of uncertainty. It will make you highly recognized at work and grow faster than your peers. 2. Stay intentional, yet flexible People who define their own measure of success at work take their growth into their own hands. By knowing what it is that they want, they are quick to grab the right opportunities. They make the best use of every situation and do not let distractions eat away into their mental energy and time. When facing challenges and setbacks, it keeps them intentional, gives them direction and guides their actions. Being intentional about work also keeps them flexible to adjust to changes around them. They don’t act delusional. They are responsive to twists and turns. When things don’t work out the way they imagined, they find ways to move forward instead of being stuck with their bad decision. There is no limit to what you can learn once you see yourself as a scientist in your own lab. The important thing is not where you were or where you are but where you want to get. Get a clear fix on where you want to go - David Schwartz Be deliberate about your future while staying real about it. Define what it is you want to achieve. What kind of work do you want to do? What skills do you need to build? What do you want to learn? Use that as the compass to align all your actions. Once you do that, you will automatically stand out and be way ahead of others who are simply working hard and getting stressed, but not really moving forward since they fail to align their goals to their actions. 3. Make space for positivity There are so many things that can be upsetting about work - mean coworkers, office politics, lack of growth, blame games, people-pleasing, or favoritism. Those who refuse to be bogged down by their environment are more productive and better performers. Instead of finding excuses as to why they can’t do something, they choose to spend their mental energy and time in finding solutions. They choose to get rid of negativity to make space for positive things in their life. The best way to deal with negativity is to observe it, without reaction and without judgment. Then consciously label each negative feeling and replace it with positive, compassionate, and solution-based thoughts...By digging beneath what seems like a mountain of quibbles, details, and logistics, labels help to uncover and identify the primary emotion driving almost all of your behavior, the emotion that, once acknowledged, seems to miraculously solve everything else - Chris Voss You will come across people from different backgrounds, aspirations, personalities, and motives. Some will inspire you and others can cause you frustration. Don’t let their negativity bring you down or affect you personally. Don’t let them define who you are or prevent you from achieving your goals. Acknowledge the negative and diffuse it by adopting positive thinking. 4. Invest in building skills for the future There can be many reasons for working hard and feeling like you are putting in a lot of effort but not really making progress. Keeping busy, but not really learning. Real progress doesn’t come from simply acquiring knowledge, it requires putting it into practice. People who stand out, look for opportunities to expand their knowledge. Little by little, they invest in areas that may not directly fall into their current job description but are essential to their progress in the future. By consistently investing in learning and practicing, they acquire far superior knowledge than what their job requires them to do. No doubt they are more valued, highly sought, and better prepared to handle higher-level responsibilities at work. When you don’t know something, learn it. When you need help, ask for it. Find time to learn new valuable skills and look for opportunities to practice them. Don’t wait for others to give you work that will make you stand out. Find ways to create your own learning experiences. 5. Take genuine interest in others No one has ever succeeded alone. You need support from the people in your network because essentially people want to work with the people they like. Success depends heavily on how we approach our interactions with other people. Every time we interact with another person at work, we have a choice to make: do we try to claim as much value as we can, or contribute value without worrying about what we receive in return? - Adam Grant People who stand out take time to build their network. They connect and build meaningful relationships at work by showing interest in other people’s work - How do you do it? What challenges do you face? Taking a genuine interest in what others have to say is a guaranteed way to form important connections at work. Keeping an open eye to what other people need and finding ways to help them out is another great strategy to add value and earn other people’s respect. An important skill while interacting with others is the ability to listen well. By listening well to others, they establish a better understanding of what the other person values and learns about their personal style. Now, when they need support with a project or an idea, they can present information in a way that makes the other person more receptive. More and more opportunities land their way as the people in their network vouch for them and their work. They support them and seek them out when they need someone they can trust. If you want to stand out, take time to build genuine connections at work. People in the network not only inspire, but they can also influence your thinking and guide you along the way. And maybe, just maybe if your idea connects with them personally, they can be your biggest brand ambassadors helping you spread the word. 6. Don’t settle for good enough, be exceptional People who stand out, don’t do things half-heartedly or bare minimum only to tick an item off their to-do list. They try to be exceptional in everything they do. They question how things are always done and find new ways to do it. They try to go beyond the task and look for ways to generate additional value. Got a routine task, let’s find ways to automate it. Found a solution to a problem, let’s document it so others can benefit from it. Know how to do something, take up the challenge to try a new approach. They continuously push boundaries because they know real growth only lies outside their comfort zone. They build their critical thinking skills by questioning their own assumptions and conclusions. They aren’t afraid to make mistakes, because mistakes signal growth or as Seth Godin writes - When the tough parts come along, the rejection and the slog and the unfair bad breaks, it makes sense to welcome them. Instead of cursing or fearing the down moments, understand that they mean you’ve chosen reality, not some unsustainable fantasy. It means that you’re doing worthwhile, difficult work, not merely amusing yourself And on this path to becoming exceptional, they stay away from arrogance. They practice confident humility which Adam Grant describes in Think Again as “having faith in our capability while appreciating that we may not have the right solution or even be addressing the right problem. That gives us enough doubt to reexamine our old knowledge and enough confidence to pursue new insights.” They are confident in their ability to make the right decision while acknowledging that they need others to do it right. They know what they don’t know and have trust in what they do. They have faith in their strengths, while also being aware of their weaknesses. They accept when they don’t have the required knowledge, but show enough confidence in their ability to acquire that knowledge. If you want to stand out, invest in continuous improvement and challenge yourself to be a little better each day. Don’t accept good enough, strive for excellence. 7. Consider obstacles and failures as opportunities Instead of feeling helpless when they face a setback and refusing to act with a fear of failure, people who stand out feel in control of their life by considering every setback as a temporary event in their life. Failures and setbacks do disappoint them for a while, but they don’t let it define them. They consider obstacles as opportunities to learn something new. Struggle gives them the signal that they are moving in the right direction, that they are learning and growing. You will come across obstacles in life—fair and unfair. And you will discover, time and time again, that what matters most is not what these obstacles are but how we see them, how we react to them, and whether we keep our composure. You will learn that this reaction determines how successful we will be in overcoming—or possibly thriving because of—them. Where one person sees a crisis, another can see opportunity. Where one is blinded by success, another sees reality with ruthless objectivity. Where one loses control of emotions, another can remain calm. Desperation, despair, fear, powerlessness—these reactions are functions of our perceptions. They are honest in their interaction with others. And they are honest with themselves. When they give critical feedback to others, people appreciate it because they know it comes from a place of care. They don’t pretend to know something and express their uncertainty by saying “I don’t know.” They share their mistakes and valuable lessons with others which encourages them to be open too. Most importantly, they look after themselves. They do not let excuses like lack of time or too much work stop them from prioritizing their health. They make space and time for exercising, planning out healthy meals, or whatever it is that they need to do to have a healthy mind and body. Because it’s only by staying healthy they can produce their best work. Have honest and open conversations with people at work. Stay true to your values and invest time in achieving a healthy state of mind and body. Summary Simply doing great work is not enough. You need to adopt powerful behaviors to stand out at work. Show bias for action. Solve problems, make decisions, and take risks to move forward. Stay intentional yet flexible with your goals. Know what you want and be prepared to change course if the situation demands. When dealing with negativity, choose to stay with the positive. Don’t let negativity bring you down. Shine at Work: 8 Tips to Get Noticed

Hey Hackers! I’m Mike Shine, and I’m a technical writer at Good Words LLC. First of all, a huge thank you to the HackerNoon community and staff for nominating me for a 2021 Noonies award! Hackernoon Contributor of the Year - Health Read on to learn more about me and what I do! 1. What do you do and why do you do it? (tell us your story) I’m about one year into a fairly significant career pivot from education to tech. Ever since I was 17, I have wanted to be a teacher. And so I was – I earned a Bachelor’s degree in music education, a Master’s degree in educational leadership, and I proudly taught in public schools for over five years. Around the beginning of COVID, there was some turbulence in my personal life, and I began to feel trapped. Even though I loved (and still love) teaching, I found myself wanting to move in a different direction with my career. I always had an interest in technology, and so I enrolled in a coding BootCamp in hopes that it would launch my new career as a software engineer. Instead of pursuing software engineering, I ended up in the technical writing field, which is engineering-adjacent and still involved in the software development lifecycle. I enjoy expanding my technical knowledge and skill set as widely as my interests reach! 2. Tell us more about the things you create / write / manage / build! As a technical writer, my job is to write technical documentation such as release notes, UI text, help articles, and learning modules for internal and external stakeholders. In my current contract role, I write external documentation for Salesforce’s Mobile Publisher product, which builds, brands, and deploys mobile apps for external customers. This is my second contract with Salesforce; previously, I wrote internal documentation for the Core Infrastructure team. I like working as a writer in tech because I am responsible for making complex technical concepts and products accessible to users; without good documentation, new tech will not be adopted, regardless of how innovative or groundbreaking it is. 3. How did you end up on your current career path? Do you like it? Before moving into the world of tech, I was a public school band teacher. I’m still very passionate about music education and the U.S. public education system more generally. My tech journey began when I participated in a coding bootcamp in late 2020. Although I learned a lot during the experience and gained a passion and curiosity for software development, I didn’t feel like becoming a software engineer was the right path for me. From there, I stumbled into the world of technical writing, which felt like a good mix of things I enjoy. In technical writing, I can combine my knowledge and interest in technology with my experience and passion for education to create documentation and learning materials that help users understand, use, and leverage new technologies. 4. What tech are you most excited or passionate about right now and why? It’s not a single new technology, but of all the tech innovations we’ve seen in recent times, I think that the strides that have been made in the realm of assistive technology give me the most hope. Keyboards, screen readers, alt text, and more have grown more robust in recent years, and even commonplace functionality like voice-created reminders have become a necessary aid for folks like me who struggle with focus. Although there is much more room for continued improvement and innovation, I am hopeful that technology can help create a more equitable society. My own focus tends to be on the disparity of opportunity within the United States’ public education system, but any technological innovations that can help disenfranchised people or people with disabilities are valuable and worthwhile. 5. What tech are you most worried about right now and why? Zuck. No, but seriously, I am gravely concerned about the degree of influence that large tech companies have on global society and the population. Many large tech companies have earned (and rightly so) the distrust of their users, especially with regard to their data collection and privacy practices. Technology grows much more quickly than the laws that are meant to regulate it, and if companies aren’t compelled to act ethically for the sake of their users, they have proven time and time again that their bottom line will remain the driving force behind their decision-making process. 6. If we gave you 10 million dollars to invest in something today, what would you invest in and why? Probably cryptocurrency. Although I am one of the many people who don’t fully understand crypto (Wait, NOTHING objectively has value? The value of the currency is entirely subjective? ), I certainly wish I had paid closer attention to my buddy from college who was bullish on crypto back in, like, 2012 or 2013. (Marty, if you’re reading this, cheers to you, my friend!) mind blown gif 7. What are you currently learning? Although I am not a professional software engineer, I am still interested in coding and website building as a hobby. I have some measure of knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but the next programming language I want to tackle is C. C is ~50 years old, and the fact that it’s still being used with some frequency around the world is proof of its staying power and relevance. I’m also in the planning stages of turning my grandfather’s thorough research into our family’s history into a website. I’m exploring tools like GoJS to figure out what the best path forward is. If anyone reading this has experience with this, I’d welcome some advice! :) 8. What’s the best advice you’ve ever given someone? This is a tough question to answer because we never really know the depth of our impact on others, except on the rare occasion that they tell us. I would say advice that I tend to give often that resonates with people is “be true to yourself.” It may sound generic and uninspired, but I think that most unhappy people are unhappy because they take jobs and do things that don’t align with the person they are at their core. The people you love and care about want you to be the best version of yourself, and you should want that for yourself too! So, find out what fulfills you on a core level and work towards doing that as often as you can, possibly even as a career or job. 9. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? This is also a very hard question to answer. I’ve been fortunate beyond measure to have had the support of outstanding mentors in nearly every stage of my life and career who have selflessly devoted their time and efforts to me. I’ve received great advice from so many people that have shaped both my personal and career growth. I don’t think I can isolate a single best piece of advice.
