There are many options today, each with unique capabilities. For agricultural and environmental analysis (what I do on a daily basis), two of the most commonly used satellite programs are Landsat and Sentinel. Each has been part of multiple missions with evolving sensors over the decades, offering increasingly rich data for various applications. Sentinel Sentinel-2, for example, is part of the European Copernicus program and specializes in multispectral imaging. As of now, there are three satellites in the Sentinel-2 series: Sentinel-2A, Sentinel-2B, and Sentinel-2C (the last one launched very recently, in September 2024, here). (Usually my first choice, as it can combine the best spatial, temporal and spectral resolutions). Landsat Landsat, managed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the National Land Imaging Program, has been active since the 1970s. Its most recent mission is Landsat-9, which, like its predecessors, provides multispectral imaging for a variety of uses. With so many satellite programs, it's essential to choose based on your specific project needs. Some satellites focus on particular regions of the planet, while others have more global objectives, which leads me to also include other less conventional options here (on the international scene). Brazilian Satellites: CBERS and Amazonia. If you're interested in national programs, Brazil offers two noteworthy options: CBERS (China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite): This Sino-Brazilian collaboration has launched several missions. The most recent, CBERS-4A, provides orbital-level multispectral imaging alongside earlier CBERS satellites with different sensors. Amazonia-1: Launched in 2021, this is Brazil's first entirely locally-developed satellite. While it offers multispectral imaging like the others, its spatial resolution is relatively lower. Its main goal is to monitor vast forested areas like the Amazon (as the name suggests). Future missions include Amazonia-1B and Amazonia-2. Of all the options above, I would say that the ideal scenario would be to use all available options to have the largest possible amount of imagery for your area. However, this approach raises at least two important questions to consider: What is the purpose of your analysis? (and whether a higher frequency of images is even necessary)
How will you handle processing so that all the different images are compatible for analysis? Where to Get Satellite Imagery Once you know your project's requirements and the sensors that meet them, there are several ways to access the data. The importance of reducing methane emissions is underestimated and understudied. Tracking methane emissions is hard due to gas leaking in many places along the long processing and distribution chain. Luckily, the newest technology allows us to track the emissions from space. Satellites armed with advanced sensors and AI are flagging invisible methane leaks that were once impossible to detect. In the era where cutting emissions is more urgent than ever, technology that exposes ‘super-emitter’ leaks from oil wells, gas pipelines, coal mines, and landfills is key to stopping climate change. Why Methane Matters? Why Methane Matters? Methane has a global warming potential higher than that of carbon dioxide on the 20-year scale. It traps heat more effectively than CO2, making it a main contributor to the short-term climate change effect. Moreover, like other greenhouse gases, methane accelerates the climate feedback loop, which in return releases more greenhouse gases. If CO2 is a slow buildup of warmth, methane is a sudden fever. If one CO2 molecule wraps Earth in a single blanket, one methane molecule is like throwing on 80 blankets. It breaks down in the atmosphere way faster than carbon dioxide, but is more harmful in the short term. That is why scientists see reducing methane emissions as the fastest way to slow down global warming. The problem is that methane is invisible and odorless. Leaks can go undetected for years and are related to many different industries, from oil and gas to decomposing trash in landfills. 20-year scale 80 blankets How Can Satellites “See” Methane? How Can Satellites “See” Methane? The issue with methane being transparent is that it cannot be discovered on a simple satellite image. However, imaging spectrometer sensors that are used in space measure what wavelengths of light are absorbed as the sunlight bounces off the Earth. Every gas has a unique light ‘fingerprint’. Methane absorbs sunlight in specific infrared bands that are invisible to our eyes but easily measured by a spectrometer. Thanks to spectrometers, satellites can detect methane by looking for the shadow of the infrared glow on the Earth below, which is specific for CH4. There is a broad range of sensors that can either analyze broad areas or zoom in on fine details, using them together helps create a more precise understanding of the location and size of methane plumes on Earth. Using AI to Contextualize the Data Using AI to Contextualize the Data Sensors from the satellites help create billions of data points every day, but it is Artificial Intelligence that helps understand that data. Machine learning models excel at pattern recognition in huge datasets. For methane detection, these models are trained to distinguish between the subtle signal of a plume from the background noise and from lookalike artifacts. There are multiple models that are trained depending on the data provided. One example is a two-step ML pipeline for Sentinel-5P data that first uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) to scan for anything plume-shaped, then a support vector machine (SVM) classifier double-checks those candidates to remove false detections. It proved extremely effective in 2021, discovering almost 3000 methane plumes around the world. Importantly, AI does this in almost real time, which is key in enforcing leak repairs. example Detecting the plumes is just the first step on the path to reducing emissions and tracking them. UN Environment Programme is one example of applying data and technology to create impact using the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS). It continuously tracks the data coming from the satellites and alerts governments and companies when a major plume is detected. Unfortunately, even though in a year, MARS sent 1200 alerts, only 12 were actioned on and fixed, meaning only 1% of all leaks were removed. This shows that while the technology has been rapidly improving, policy is lagging. As Inger Andersen (UNEP’s director) put it bluntly, governments and companies need to ‘stop paying lip service’ and start fixing the leaks when they are alerted. alerts governments Still, there are a few notable success stories. Many alerts were actioned, most notably in Algeria, Azerbaijan, Nigeria, and the U.S.. In certain countries, new regulations, such as a methane fee in the U.S., give companies strong financial incentives to use an alerting system and act on the leaks. Azerbaijan’s state oil company, for example, said it identified 400 leaks via satellite monitoring and is working to fix them. And globally, there’s a push to make all this data public. Certain nonprofit initiatives, such as the Climate TRACE coalition and Carbon Mapper data portal, are aggregating satellite emissions data and sharing it openly. In the ideal scenario, there would be radical transparency, where everyone can see who is emitting, which then puts pressure on the emitter to fix the issue. A good example is the situation in Turkmenistan in 2022. After satellite data revealed huge methane plumes, it turned out the country was the single largest source of super-emitter leaks. This news helped gather international assistance to fix its aging infrastructure. the Climate TRACE coalition and Carbon Mapper data portal Challenges Ahead Challenges Ahead As much as the progress in the areas is impressive, we are far from perfect technology. For example, satellites can’t see through thick clouds, which means methane detection needs clear skies. This makes the tracking especially hard in tropical and high-altitude areas. There is research being done on the ways satellite sensors can complement other techniques, such as on the ground sensors, but the perfect solution is not there yet. Other challenges, such as having enough satellites and 24/7 coverage of the entire Earth in a financially viable manner, are still waiting to be resolved. Finally, even with perfect technology, the final solution still requires boots on the ground work to fix the issues and AI cannot do that for us. These systems, like AWS’s Guard Duty, Microsoft’s Sentinel, or CrowdStrike, collect data from your VPC, storage spaces, DNS, and other cloud resources to analyze and identify any potentially dangerous activity. These systems integrate directly with your infrastructure (or the specific resource you want to protect), so you won't have to worry about manually tracking external threats on your cloud. 2. When software vendors discover security vulnerabilities in their products, they release patches that can create fixes to address the issue. These patches modify the actual code to eliminate security flaws, update your authentication, reduce excessive permissions, and improve how you handle data. In other words, they fix everything that needs to be fixed in your system. Automating these patches means setting up a system that automatically finds, downloads, and installs security fixes to your software, operating systems, and applications without manual intervention from your IT team. This reduces your vulnerability to attacks, as most successful cyber attacks target vulnerabilities that have yet to be patched. A prime example is the Log4J breach, which allowed attackers to steal customers’ credit card information and shut down production systems. Only that it's not. With the correct key, you can reverse the process and turn the ciphertext back to plain text. For example, these tools will check if a medical company follows the updated HIPAA standards, or if a finance company adheres to the PCI DSS. How? By monitoring. If you run a healthcare clinic that must comply with HIPAA, your compliance automation tool might detect that: A new cloud database was created without encryption enabled, which violates HIPAA's data protection requirements.

This reflects our attention to memory and energy efficiency. 8 Implications By developing a new model from scratch specifically for GPUs, and wielding a handful of key ocean-model-specific innovations, Oceananigans achieves 9.9 SYPD at 10 km resolution using less than 1% of the resources of current state of the art supercomputers. This achievement means that most climate model runs submitted to IPCC will be able use 10 km ocean models — precipitating a step change in the accuracy of climate prediction. precipitating a step change in the accuracy of climate prediction. At scales between 10–100 km, macroscale ocean turbulence exerts a key control on ocean carbon and heat uptake. However, attempts to accurately parameterize this key process in coarse resolution models have frustrated generations of oceanographers. The inadequacies of macroscale parameterizations are associated with major biases and uncertainty in climate predictions [33, 39]. At resolutions of 10 km, the need for macroscale turbulence parameterization is eliminated, and ocean simulations capture key ocean features such as sharp sea surface temperature gradients supporting the formation of marine stratus clouds above narrow eastern boundary currents like the California and Benguela Current [28], and changes in the meridional overturning circulation due to the effect of Antarctic meltwater on deep convection in austral winter [26]. Additionally, by achieving 0.95 SYPD at 1.7 km resolution, we pave the way for decadal ocean simulations of the ocean “submesoscale” — the ocean analogue to atmospheric weather — which exhibits hourly fluctuations, high spatial and seasonal variability, and which exerts a strong control on ocean air-sea fluxes, biological productivity and fish stocks [46]. The granularity and accuracy provided by 1.7 km resolution is further required to plan local mitigation strategies and predict local extreme events. Third, the unparalleled speed of execution and memory efficiency of Oceananigans allows global computations at never-before-seen sub-kilometer resolutions. The capacity for ultra-high-resolution simulations aligns with current advancements in resolution of ocean sampling platforms from satellites [32, 12] to fleets of floats and drones. While this wealth of data is likely to provide new insights and scientific knowledge about the nature of small scale processes, global high-resolution ocean simulations will be needed to explore their impact on global climate scales. Finally, our results pave the way for marked increase in energy efficiency of climate simulations. The very reason to develop climate models, as stated by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP), for example, is to provide the necessary information to effectively reduce emissions and mitigate the effects of global warming — while, counterproductively, the carbon footprint of climate simulations that contribute to CMIP increases rapidly.
