Scapin' The most important aspect of my and my co-founder's, Joachim's, backgrounds is our passion for gaming. From the first Nintendo side-scroller to the massive 3d worlds of today, we have both spent time in virtual worlds and become fascinated by the moments that are not only about achieving a high score but also about spending time connecting with others! It's funny because the Stockholm start-up scene is not massive, but Joachim and I had never met. We both left our previous roles and were looking for our next thing. Two years ago, we were introduced, and 30 minutes into our first conversation, we started talking about gaming and the Metaverse. That turned into a 3-hour discussion about what The Metaverse could mean for online socializing. We talked for a few months until we landed on initial value proposition. Of course, the product shape-shifted as we built and learned from user interviews and early prototypes. Scapin's But the high-level idea of a Metaverse-enabled communication experience has remained the same. What Are Your Thoughts About the Metaverse, and What Opportunities Do You See in It? I generally think about the Metaverse as an initiative to improve the time we spend online. As a result, we will see more and more digital consumer and business experiences enter the Metaverse. Simplifying quite a lot, I keep my eye on three developments that enable this shift. Experiences moving from Digital to Virtual, which will happen across all platforms, including mobile. Economics and ownership moving from centralized to decentralized, supporting a healthier creator economy and user ownership. Creativity moving from advanced to simple, AI-assisted tools that anyone can use to create something magical. There are great Metaverse projects out there, and many are based on a philosophy and long-term vision that we share! With , we see an opportunity to accelerate the adoption of Metaverse experiences by reimagining an experience that is familiar to all of us, but hasn't quite been captured naturally in a virtual setting; chatting and hanging out. Scapin' What Are Your Thoughts About Building Connections in the Metaverse? Where Do You See It Going? Hanging out with friends in person is entertainment. There is no reason why this should not be the case online. The Metaverse not only enables communication as entertainment but opens the door to social experiences we have never experienced before! The simplest of social interactions can become our most memorable moments - like an off-the-cuff joke that makes the whole room crack up. Today's digital communication, from crowded video calls to sets of emojis or stickers, does not capture this at all. UGC Is an Inseparable Part of Scapin’. What Do You Think Is the Main Driver for Creators to Create Experiences on Scapin’? We think about two forms of UGC. We want to open to the existing ecosystem of talented creators, including artists and developers. Scapin' It's important to say that even though you can build and outfit your avatars today, we want to build a communication experience for the Metaverse at large, not just our platform. Scapin' We're inspired by all kinds of avatars, digital fashion, and built worlds, and we see as the communication app that brings them to life - and together. Interoperability is one of the aspects that excites us most about the Metaverse, and it will benefit the experience long-term. Scapin' Scapin' Better creator economics will give more high-quality and diverse content to benefit the entire ecosystem. The other form comes from users of the app. We're already experimenting with what's essentially a 3D selfie production studio that enables users to create content never before seen. We are also rolling out the virtual 3D equivalent of sending video messages. We want to ensure that all users can add their own flavor to the communication experience. This includes AI-powered outfits and environments or simply hosting a fun conversation game! It's a blend of the novel as well as the fundamentally familiar. What are your thoughts about fashion in the Metaverse in general? Famous brands are making moves, and small creator fashion brands are taking the Metaverse by storm. Where do you see it going? People are inherent creators. Since we’ve all been spending so much time online, virtual identities have naturally opened up new avenues of self-expression. So it's a given that we will invest in these online identities, including fashion. Great content will strengthen our communication experience, and we want to work with anyone that contributes to this. However, what excites us about the Metaverse is the potential to surface creativity from all corners of the world. We would love to see a completely new and diverse creator class emerge with the Metaverse, which has previously been limited by geography, lack of tools, or protective gatekeepers. To see a mega brand like acquire is awesome, but we're more excited about the small creators that will give a run for their money. (No pun intended!) Nike RTFKT Nike What Is the Future of Scapin’? We have built a familiar core experience open to anyone as a foundation. Scapin' And introducing user ownership, porting pre-existing virtual identities and content, and enabling creator contribution (including artists, developers, and users) are all in the stars for . Scapin' It's impossible to predict exactly what kinds of new experiences will emerge. One of the most fun examples I have heard of is a space in (a Chinese metaverse app), where people come together as avatars and simulate couples fighting. What if I told you that cross-platform app development may not be a universally smart business decision, after all? And creating a carbon copy of a successful Windows app for Mac? Yeah, a bit myopic also, if you ask me. Mac traders deserve better, or more specifically — they deserve “different”. My name is , I am a Product Manager for – the makers of a popular “swiss multitool” trading platform for Windows.  Let me tell you the story of how we skipped on the obvious decision and built something our audience was actually excited about. Sergii Alekseev Tiger.Trade Confirming a gap in the market It all started a few months ago when our company reached a point where expansion started to look like the next logical step. At that point, we had a vague sense that there was a demand for a macOS-based trading terminal. There was even a portion of our users who ran the Tiger.Trade Windows terminal on their Macs, with varying degrees of success and overheating. But that fact alone did not convince us that we should simply reproduce what we already had for a different OS. We decided to take a closer look at the niche before we initiated development. Here’s what we found: There are no UI/UX-friendly terminals for macOS. None! Mac users are forced to combine multiple apps to trade Existing platforms have no professional “DOM” / “level 2” to trade futures as a scalper The conclusion? The current offering is scarce, bad-looking, and has limited functionality. Our research confirmed that there was a gap in the market we were capable of filling. But we’ve decided to go a little further with our market scaping. So, Mac users. What are they like? One in ten desktop/laptop users is a proud owner of a Mac. What do we know about this distinct audience? We know that Apple users are generally design-savvy. They are also more likely to have disposable income and to be early adopters of new trends and technologies. We can see it by the wildfire that Revolut and Robinhood were for the iOS and macOS crowd. And yet, when we took a closer look at the Fintech product lineup for Mac, we found neo-banks, investment platforms and stock trading apps, but one element was distinctly missing. Can you guess what it was? A Crypto trading terminal for Mac That’s right. In 2021 if you had a Macbook, disposable income and an acute interest in all things Blockchain, your options would be limited to pretty much a bunch of web-based exchanges. “But what’s wrong with web exchanges? Does everything need to be an app?” – you might ask. The answer is simple. A standalone application is a way more secure solution than a web page, which could be vulnerable to phishing attacks, malware and other types of fraud. I spend most of my time inside the browser console and while I love the power and expressiveness of the development tools, they are often overkill for what I want. I also like having a consistent JavaScript Console interface that is available from anywhere, not just inside the browser. For example, there are times when I want to use JavaScript outside the browser to automate Window’s Office Applications or script or use the browser in conjunction with native applications like SQL Server to perform some data tasks that are just not available inside the browser sandbox. One common use case I have frequently is to scrape some data from a web page and insert it into a native application like Microsoft Excel for further data analysis. Node.js While each of the environments listed in the title have there own console environments and REPL’s, I have found the command line interfaces limited in terms of integration with the host Operating System. Most operate inside a sandbox that makes perfect sense for the casual user but really restricts the capabilities I want as a power user or system’s engineer. Another use for this console is during presentations or live coding sessions when you want to demonstrate ideas quickly. I use it frequently to prototype ideas and to validate features available in the browser or the underlying OS. My Universal JavaScript Console is based on the terrific work done by Remy Sharp _jsconsole - Web based console - for presentations and workshops_github.com remy/jsconsole I took Remy’s excellent console and extended it with a few features that allow me to host the console in multiple environments. In this mode, you basically inject the Console inside an existing Web Page and it acquires the context of the page so you can script the contents of the page just as you would if you opened the browser development tools. However, unlike the browser console, which is sandboxed via the web site settings, the Universal Console provides a great deal more power in terms of bringing in existing libraries into an existing web page and/or via extended network capabilities, like WebSockets or cross domain XMHttpRequest calls. This is accomplished via the use of a Bookmarklet, which you can access via the command. Simple drag the Bookmarklet from the help page to your browser Bookmarks and it becomes available from any web site. :help To illustrate this functionality, we are going to navigate to and into this page so we can script it’s contents. For this example, we are going to use the Console and one of my favourite Libraries (ALASQL) to get a list of all the new’s links on the HackerNews web site and export those to Excel. However, there are a lost of scenarios where Electron, NW.js as well as Node.js fall short in terms of native Window’s functionality, in particular, COM Automation and specifically Microsoft Office integration. Most businesses still run Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, etc and I wanted a way to script these applications using my favourite language, JavaScript. While the Window’s Developer Ecosystem has a ton of ways to build and extend Office Applications, they usually require a ton of dependencies and skills in using C# or Visual Studio, which in my case is overkill if I just want to do something quick and easy. This also removes additional engineering bandwidth and ensures that the metrics are measured in an objective manner. The solution I will be discussing a simple solution that can work for most use cases - transform the device specific logs to an uniform representation. I am also the first author patent holder in this area - Standardizing analysis metrics across multiple devices. I will not be discussing low level details of the solution but the high level details. Implementations relate to generating standardized metrics from device specific metrics that are generated during an interaction between a user and an automated assistant. The solution consists of the following steps: Identify the metrics that are agnostic of the form factor - these are core metrics for the conversational AI agent in question.

Left unaddressed, the digital divide not only imperils efforts to build a strong digital ecosystem, but also threatens to increase income inequality and instability in emerging economies. The digital divide disproportionately affects women and other marginalized groups. For example, 80 percent of women in low-income countries do not use the Internet. [4] As the world has increasingly digitalized, countries around the world are grappling with how to approach the digital economy in a way that takes advantages of its benefits, addresses its risks, and expands its reach to more people. In this article, we will be delving into the ethics of using and algorithms in social media, examining how they help personalize content, potentially leading to bias and echo chambers, and the future of AI in social media platforms. AI A Brief History of Algorithms and Their Increasing Use Cases in Social Media ‘An algorithm is a series of instructions designed to solve specific problems, perform tasks, or make decisions’ [2]. In social media, these instructions govern user experiences such as content ranking, filtering, and personalization, typically based on trends for different consumer groups. This allows you as the user to find content that will interest you much faster, as it is likely to appear on For You Pages without you having to search for it. Algorithms haven’t always been used in social media. It was in 2009 that Tumblr and Facebook introduced ranking metrics and personalized feeds. In 2012, more followed suit. Facebook upped its algorithmic use in its news feed and introduced sponsored content [3]. began a “semi-structured feed,” and YouTube introduced a ranking algorithm, prioritizing watch time over quantity [4]. Since then, algorithms’ roles in such social media have only continued to increase. By 2015, machine learning was starting to play a role in sorting and filtering algorithms, underpinned by developments in Big Data efforts. 2016’s political events like the Trump election and Brexit referendum (and a pivotal year in the Cambridge Analytica scandal) then brought to public attention some of the ethical dilemmas surrounding such heavy and increasing use of algorithms and user data collection in social media. LinkedIn These days, AI-powered algorithms are built so precisely they recommend content based on your specific previous interactions on the platform, with growing user data allowing social media companies to eliminate a significant majority of any guesswork. Documentaries like The Social Dilemma [5] and The Great Hack [6] give some insight into just how engineered some of these algorithms are, often with the end goal of keeping a user on their platform for longer and driving interaction with the platform. While increased user interaction means more data for social media companies to collect, tweak, and repeat this process, this goal does not take into consideration what’s best for the user and wider society with regard to social media consumption. Ethical Issues Stemming from Algorithmic Bias Algorithms can perpetuate harmful biases, and in the context of social media, this often manifests as the reinforcement of stereotypes and limited exposure to diverse viewpoints. Culminated over time, this can fuel discrimination, polarise electorates, and even contribute to extremism and right-wing/autocratic populism, which exploit societal divisions. At a low level of impact, examples of algorithmic bias could include job postings for certain industries, e.g., LinkedIn being shown more to men than women, because the training data sets the algorithms were modeled on predict that more men are likely to work in those roles. While this doesn’t necessarily have an immediately obvious harmful impact, it creates a negative feedback loop that works against society’s goals to improve equality and representation across workplaces and specific industries. In this way, gender bias is perpetuated as a result of algorithmic bias by limiting opportunities for women to see those ads. Now, to delve deeper into the higher-level implications of algorithmic bias, we will examine the 2016 Trump election as a case study. Case Study: How Algorithms Affected Polarization/Echo Chambers in Trump 2016 Election Throughout the course of the 2016 US presidential election, research has shown that algorithms may have exacerbated political polarization by amplifying echo chambers and limiting the electorate’s exposure to diverse viewpoints. Many think it was this mechanism that allowed Trumpism to run rampant and also why so few people predicted his victory [7], as these dynamics were not fully understood nor visible during the election period. Even on social media, therefore, it seems true that ‘birds of a feather flock together’ [8]. Algorithms tailor content to align with users' preferences, shielding them from opposing views and opinions, and creating ‘filter bubbles’. In turn, some individuals within these filter bubbles continue the positive reinforcement of their views by further isolating themselves within digital environments where their beliefs and opinions are echoed and even more so reinforced. These are called ‘echo chambers’. Essentially, social media fosters an environment in which we all ingest such extremely personalized news and content feeds that we become blind to others’ differing perspectives. Currently, it is not clear from research whether social media only serves as a platform allowing echo chambers to emerge or whether its use of algorithms goes so far as to play a role in creating these echo chambers[8]. The 2016 Trump win shows how social media companies’ agendas can have widespread consequences affecting millions of people, which, while unintended, are still hugely impactful and also unethical. We know that social media algorithms are designed to maximize user engagement and retention by serving content tailored to individual preferences. Now, though, we also see how this applies even to political conversations, leveraging users’ political leanings and vulnerabilities. Who knows how the election would have played out if algorithms weren’t impacting people’s personal political beliefs? And how does this affect democracy and political stability? If people are not aware of these manipulations, can the outcomes be considered fair and valid? The Future of AI in Social Media The role of algorithms and AI in social media is only continuing to evolve alongside our innovations within those fields. From AI-generated content to AI-powered algorithms allowing the precision we touched on earlier, the ethical challenges that come with its integration into social media will similarly need to be increasingly considered. This needs to start with addressing algorithmic biases and promoting algorithmic transparency in social media platforms. Future policy considerations and regulations will play a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of AI use in social media. There is already growing attention being given to the need for algorithmic regulation and protection from the harm these invisible biases can cause, especially in the US. So far, initiatives include[9]: The “Algorithmic Accountability Act of 2022” The “Eliminating Bias in Algorithmic Systems Act of 2023” The “AI Bill of Rights” While there are more frameworks currently being drawn up in the proposal stages, there is still insufficient regulation of such powerful technologies when we consider the impact they already have. Language models (LMs) represent a highly versatile category of technology, processing text inputs to generate textual outputs. Contemporary research has illuminated that this adaptable text-to-text framework can be harnessed to address a myriad of tasks without necessitating task-specific adjustments (i.e., absent fine-tuning or architectural changes) through the use of prompting methods to enable precise zero and few-shot inference. In essence, LMs are initially trained on extensive, unlabelled text corpora (guided by a language modeling objective), after which the LMs are directed via textual prompts to resolve specific problems, thereby allowing the pre-trained model to be efficiently repurposed for varied applications. Despite the immense promise of LMs as task-neutral foundation models, initial endeavours to apply pre-trained LMs to downstream tasks (e.g., GPT and GPT-2 [4, 5]) encountered significant challenges. This overview will explore how recent advancements have improved upon these preliminary efforts, leading to LMs that deliver significantly enhanced task-neutral performance. A critical discovery in this research trajectory is the enhanced capability of LMs as they are scaled up. (from [1] and [2]) More detailed examination reveals that large LMs (LLMs) are (i) more sample-efficient compared to their smaller counterparts and (ii) exhibit greater proficiency in task-neutral transfer to downstream applications. Notably, the performance of these LLMs demonstrates predictable patterns relative to various parameters (e.g., model scale and training data volume). This empirical evidence has culminated in the development of GPT-3, a colossal LLM with 175 billion parameters, which not only surpasses its predecessors in task-neutral performance but also exceeds contemporary, supervised deep learning approaches in certain domains. Key concepts necessary for understanding LMs have been discussed in my previous posts, including the language modeling objective, the architecture of decoder-only transformer models, and their integration to forge robust foundation models. Background I will offer a succinct overview of these concepts here, while also delineating a few additional notions pertinent to comprehending LLMs like GPT-3. Modern LMs utilize standard pre-training methods to tackle a broad spectrum of tasks without subsequent modifications (i.e., no architectural adjustments, fine-tuning, etc.). Employing a voluminous corpus of unlabelled text, we pre-train our LM with a language modeling objective that (i) extracts a text sample from our corpus and (ii) attempts to predict the succeeding word. This represents a form of self-supervised learning, where the correct next word can always be verified by examining the data in our corpus. Language modeling at a glance Modern LMs employ decoder-only transformer architectures, which apply a series of layers that include masked self-attention and forward transformations to the input. Masked self-attention, as opposed to bidirectional self-attention, precludes the model from 'peeking ahead' in a sequence to predict the subsequent word. Architecture Beyond these decoder-only layers, the LM architecture encompasses embedding layers that store vectors for all potential tokens within a predefined vocabulary size. Through these embedding layers, raw text is transformed into a matrix that the model can process, achieved by: Tokenizing raw text into discrete tokens (i.e., words or sub-words), Retrieving the corresponding embedding vector for each token, Concatenating these token embeddings to form a matrix or sequence of token vectors, Integrating position (and other) embeddings to each token vector. By pre-training LMs over expansive text corpora, we obtain models capable of accurately predicting the next token within a given token sequence. However, to utilize these models for language understanding tasks such as sentence classification and language translation, we do not modify the LM. Instead, we leverage the model’s inherent generic text-to-text input-output structure by supplying textual "prompts," such as: Adaptation “Translate this sentence to English: <sentence> =>”
“Summarize the following document: <document> =>”. With these problem-solving prompts, a proficient LM should yield a textual sequence that addresses the query effectively. For scenarios requiring a selection from a predetermined set of responses (e.g., multiple choice or classification), the LM can be used to assess the likelihood of generating each potential response and select the most probable outcome. The essence of modern LLMs lies in utilizing language model pre-training as a mechanism to develop generic foundation models capable of resolving diverse challenges without the need for adaptation or fine-tuning. While previous LMs like GPT and GPT-2 [4, 5] demonstrated inferior performance relative to tailored or supervised language understanding methods, this learning paradigm holds considerable promise and—as evidenced by GPT-3—can yield impressive results when the underlying LM is substantially enlarged. For clarity, a power law is mathematically expressed as follows. In this equation, x and y represent the variables under examination, while a and p influence the power law's shape and dynamics. When this power law (with a = 1, p = 0.5, and 0 < x, y < 1) is graphed, converting both axes to a logarithmic scale reveals a distinct linear trend, characteristic of power laws. Power laws describe how one variable scales as a power of another. Our discussions will include an inverse version of a power law, represented as: This equation employs a negative exponent for p, producing a graph where one variable decreases as the other increases. In our analysis of LMs, we observe that the LM loss decreases in accordance with a power law across various dimensions, such as model or dataset size. Additional Useful Concepts In addition to the foundational principles of language modeling, there are several ancillary concepts that will be beneficial to understand moving forward. The primary focus of the papers discussed in this overview is on scaling models like GPT and GPT-2 [4, 5]. As models grow in complexity, training them becomes increasingly challenging due to heightened computational and memory demands. Distributed training methods, which utilize additional hardware resources (e.g., more servers/GPUs), facilitate the scalability of large training operations. Distributed Training There are various strategies for distributing the training workload of neural networks. One such strategy is data parallel training, which involves: Taking a large mini-batch, Dividing it into smaller sub-batches, Performing computations for each sub-batch in parallel across different GPUs, Consolidating the results from each GPU to update the central model. This method enhances training efficiency by parallelizing computations across multiple GPUs. Alternatively, model-parallel training divides the model itself across several GPUs. For instance, each layer—or even sub-components of each layer—might be allocated to different GPUs. This distribution allows the forward pass of the training process to occur across multiple devices, enabling the training of larger models and potentially improving efficiency through sophisticated pipelining and parallelization. For the purposes of this overview, it is important to recognize that leveraging multiple GPUs can make training of large language models (LLMs) more manageable and efficient. Data and model parallel training represent popular techniques in distributed training. There are numerous other strategies and considerations in this field that significantly enhance practical outcomes in deep learning. Utilizing large batches in data parallel training is generally advantageous for computational efficiency. However, excessively large batches may impair model performance and escalate computational costs, requiring more hardware. This phenomenon of diminishing returns becomes evident beyond a certain batch size; see below. Critical Batch Size (from [3]) Research has empirically determined the 'critical batch size', a metric that estimates the optimal batch size across various applications. Beyond this critical size, performance gains and computational efficiency start to diminish. As we will explore, some research adopts this critical batch size as a standard for efficient resource utilization during training. Language models generate text sequences in response to prompts through an autoregressive process, predicting each subsequent word based on the previous context. The simplest method continuously selects the most likely next word, but this approach may not yield the optimal overall sequence. Beam Search Beam search offers an alternative: instead of choosing the single most probable next word, it selects the top-k most probable options at each step, maintaining a list of potential sequences. At the conclusion of the generation process, the most likely overall sequence from this list is selected. This method provides a more effective approximation of the best sequence by considering multiple potential continuations at each step, thereby enhancing the quality of the generated text. Key Insights and Strategic Implications The foundational goal of GPT models was to develop universal language models capable of addressing a broad spectrum of tasks without necessitating task-specific tuning. This ambition is grounded in the premise that a profound comprehension of language modeling—specifically, the prediction of subsequent words in sequences—can be extrapolated to a variety of applications. Initially, models such as GPT and GPT-2 did not meet these expectations, delivering subpar performance in task-agnostic settings compared to supervised models. However, this overview has demonstrated that amplifying the scale of these language models (LMs) is an effective strategy for achieving high-performance, task-agnostic language understanding capabilities. This approach culminated in the conceptualization and deployment of GPT-3, an enormously scaled language model (approximately 100 times larger than GPT-2) that significantly outstrips the task-agnostic performance of its predecessors. The principle of scaling—enhancing model performance through the augmentation of model size, data volume, and computational resources—has been pivotal. Empirical data suggest that to optimize the efficacy of language model training, it is critical to substantially expand the model's dimensions while moderately increasing the dataset and batch size used during pre-training. This results in models that not only exhibit greater sample efficiency but also improve performance in accordance with power laws related to model size, data volume, and computational investment.
