Articulating the vision of a 3D immersive virtual world often involves breaking down the complex meaning of the metaverse.  To fully understand what it is, it's helpful to talk to innovators that are pushing the boundaries of technology in the metaverse space. My unyielding curiosity led me to , the co-founder and CEO of SuperWorld – a virtual world mapped onto the physical world– where users can create, discover and monetize content (3D, 2D, audio) in augmented reality. Hrish Lotlikar Through SuperWorld, Hrish is helping to shape what Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg once described as the future of the internet. Hrish and I recently sat down to discuss the metaverse and his vision of a digital world built on top of it. Read on! 1. Hrish, can you tell us about your background in technology and web 3? My career has spanned experience on Wall Street, in Silicon Valley, and in Hollywood, with many years spent living and working internationally, and my background has uniquely prepared me for our mission at SuperWorld. I started my career in management consulting and worked on Wall Street at UBS Investment Bank and HSBC Securities in New York, starting off in real estate investment banking. I didn’t know at the time that I would help create the category of the virtual real estate covering the real world, but life is funny that way. I definitely was well prepared by my “physical world” real estate experience. Afterward, I became a Vice President at Spencer Trask Ventures, an early-stage technology venture capital fund in New York and then a founding Managing Partner of Eastlabs, an early-stage technology VC fund based in Kyiv, Ukraine.  I was an early employee in my first BD role at Toptal, a talent marketplace backed by a16z, which is now one of the leading companies in the space. I co-founded Rogue Initiative Studios, a Hollywood entertainment studio (partnered with Hollywood director Michael Bay) focused on feature film, TV, gaming and immersive experiences. This experience has given me insight into the intersection of technology and entertainment, which is highly relevant in the Web3 space, where immersive experiences, gaming and entertainment are major use cases for the metaverse and blockchain technology. 2. You were rated by ReadWrite as one of the most influential people in The Metaverse in 2021. How excited were you to share that honor with Mike Winkleman(Beeple)and others? I was truly honored to be recognized as one of the most influential people in The Metaverse by ReadWrite, alongside other notable figures such as Beeple, Neal Stephenson, Matthew Ball, Phil Rosedale, Tim Sweeney, Sebastien Borget, Cathy Hackl and others. The Metaverse is an emerging and rapidly growing industry, and it's exciting to be a part of this transformative moment in history. To be recognized for the work that we're doing at SuperWorld and the impact that we're making in this space is truly humbling. It's an exciting time to be involved in the Web3 space, and I'm looking forward to continuing to drive innovation and growth in The Metaverse and beyond. 3. What is the metaverse all about? I think the significance of the metaverse is that it brings together our physical life with our virtual life enabling us to do things in the physical world and receive virtual benefits from that activity, or vice versa, doing virtual activities that unlock physical experiences. I am an advocate of the open metaverse where interoperability between virtual worlds is paramount and also the utilization of web3 technology that enables anyone to own the virtual space around them and the digital content they are creating. Alphabet, Meta and Microsoft are three of the biggest technology giants that have invested heavily in the metaverse project. Is the metaverse a new tech race? While Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft are indeed investing heavily in the metaverse project, it is not necessarily a new tech race. The concept of the metaverse has been around for years, and it has been explored in various forms in science fiction and video games. However, with the advancements in mixed reality technology, web3 and AI, it has become more feasible to create a shared virtual environment where people can interact with each other, have the ability to own these spaces and the content created. It’s also worth noting that the metaverse is not a winner-takes-all market. There are multiple metaverse platforms, and different platforms could cater to different audiences and use cases. So, while there is competition among these tech giants to establish themselves as key players in the metaverse space, it is not a zero-sum game. 5. Can you tell us about SuperWorld and your role in co-founding it? SuperWorld is the virtual world mapped onto the real world, allowing users to create, discover and monetize content (3D, 2D, audio) in augmented reality. SuperWorld's virtual real estate platform allows users to buy virtual plots of land anywhere in the world, activate monetization and become a key stakeholder on our platform in those real-world locations. SuperWorld’s mission is to enhance people’s real lives and to leverage metaverse technologies (immersive tech, web3 and AI) to improve the physical world and benefit humanity. The idea came to my co-founder Max Woon and me in 2017, after we saw the massive success of Pokemon Go and thought about how we could empower anyone to be able to create, discover and monetize content in real-world locations on Earth. We also integrated web3 technology to enable anyone to own the digital content they are creating and to be able to own the geospatial locations around them. As co-founder & CEO of SuperWorld, my role has been to drive the vision and strategy of the company while also working closely with our team to build a platform that can provide value to users, brands, and organizations alike. I'm proud of what we've accomplished so far, with new users and partners joining us every day. SuperWorld is passionate about creating a metaverse that is accessible to everyone, and that allows people to interact with the world and each other in new and meaningful ways. I believe that our platform has the potential to transform the way we think about virtual and physical space, and I'm excited to help create SuperWorld into the gateway into the metaverse for the mainstream. 6. One key element of AR is its potential to usher in a "phygital" economy. How long will it take to get there? AR has a bright outlook as we can already see early signs of the emergence of a “phygital” economy. For instance, retailers are already using AR to enhance the shopping experience by allowing customers to try on virtual fashion (Nike, Adidas, Gucci, Warby Parker, to name a few) or preview products in their own homes (Amazon, IKEA, Target, etc.). With AR glasses becoming more accessible and advanced, we can expect to see an increasing number of industries embracing the use of AR to create innovative and engaging experiences for their customers and employees.  These use cases are already here and I expect over the next few years, AR will be commonplace as part of the phygital economy. 7. What are the opportunities that the metaverse will usher in for millions of people across the world? The metaverse is expected to bring numerous new opportunities for people across the world to interact, work, learn and play. It will create new forms of social interaction, allowing people to interact with each other in new and immersive ways. They can also form communities and participate in social activities that were previously impossible or limited by physical barriers.  The metaverse will bring people’s physical lives and virtual lives together. The metaverse will allow people to work and learn in virtual environments that are more engaging and interactive than traditional settings. This could be particularly beneficial for people in remote or underserved areas.  In SuperWorld, we are enabling content to be added to physical locations in the real world, thereby ameliorating our physical experiences as well. The metaverse will enable people to buy and sell virtual goods, services, and experiences, opening up new economic opportunities for individuals and businesses and also unlocking opportunities in the real world. And finally, the metaverse could potentially provide greater accessibility for people with disabilities, allowing them to participate in social activities, work, and entertainment in ways that may not be possible in the physical world. 8. Is the metaverse here to stay? Yes, there are a variety of inflection points that have made the timing ripe for the metaverse. Major tech companies, such as Facebook (now Meta), Microsoft, Google, Niantic, Unity, and Epic have made significant investments in the development of metaverse platforms, infrastructure, and technologies. The gaming industry has already embraced virtual worlds and online multiplayer experiences, with games like Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft serving as early examples of metaverse-like environments. The rapid advancement of technologies such as VR, AR, 5G, and edge computing is expected to enable richer, more immersive experiences in the metaverse. Decentralized blockchain-based technologies, like non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and decentralized finance (DeFi), are increasingly being integrated into the metaverse, allowing for new forms of digital ownership and financial transactions. 9. What is the problem with the metaverse? The metaverse's lack of inclusivity can be a significant problem, as it can perpetuate real-world biases and discrimination, creating a virtual space that mirrors the inequalities present in society. This can have serious consequences for individuals and communities, leading to feelings of isolation, marginalization, and discrimination. Our mission at SuperWorld is to build a better world and we want to create a platform that is accessible and inclusive for all. In the , we have seen how to ensure the high availability of Distributed Systems. previous article Taking as an example the Cache, we created two replicas of service clusters, however, we didn’t discuss how we would optimally access these clusters in such a way that we don’t load any of the clusters too much, and at the same time, take advantage of high-availability and essential consistency that we created. Round Robin is the answer. The Problem Statement Having two cache clusters gives us data replication and data consistency. However, a logical question arises, how do we send requests to them when we want to retrieve value from the cache? The simple solution would be to ask one service cluster (for example, cluster A), and only in case of failure, ask cluster B. This approach is presented in Figure 1: But in this case, cluster A may be overloaded, and cluster B would not be used most of the time. So this isn’t a solution. The second way of handling it would be a random calling of services. These may be a reasonable solution in some cases, but randomness in Distributed Systems adds even more problems, making it even more unstable and hard to monitor. And here, the Round Robin algorithm comes into play. This approach is shown in Figure 2: Round Robin Algorithm Round Robin (or shortly RR) is an algorithm for sharing computational resources between processes. In the computer, we have only some CPU cores that can execute programs. These programs are usually split into a bunch of processes that need access to the CPU to execute their instructions. At every moment, a CPU core can execute a single process, however, if the CPU would execute processes sequentially, then running more programs at the same time would be impossible. To make the running of more programs in parallel possible, the computer uses Context Switches. A Context Switch is a phenomenon of moving from one running thread (or process) to another; even if the execution of the first didn’t end up. The first process is put on hold, while the second one is started or continues execution from the last instruction executed. Round Robin uses a context switch to move constantly from one process to another by giving a constant amount of time on the CPU to each process till it finishes executing. New processes added to the queue processes are getting processing time too when their time comes. Instead, use an URL or a file from your device Round Robin For Load Balancing Round Robin can be used in Distributed Systems too. Usually, it is used for load balancing. When the system has more replicas of the service (as in our case with caches) a system of balancing the load in this service is needed. While the Load Balancing in the Round Robin initial formulation the processes are changed with services, while the CPU time is changed with requests. To better understand it, suppose we have two services, A and B. The first request would be done to service A. The wheel is turning, and the next request goes to Service B. And then again to Service A, and so on. NOTE: During our implementation, we are going to do an additional check request to another service in case of the failure to one, to save the property of replication that we have in our Caches. We have often discussed the costs of web-data and how it can . This is what Return On Investment (ROI) is all about. This framework has helped over our past years of dealing with, building, and selling web-data in various industries. Understanding Web-Data ROI Return on Investment (ROI) is a simple and popular performance metric for a project or an investment. As its name suggests, it’s the ratio (expressed in percentage) of Returns (benefits generated by the investment) over Investments (costs linked to it). The upside of ROI lies in it being straightforward and easy to understand. The downside is it tends to oversimplify things, but it still provides an excellent first glance at the overall economic viability of a project. Returns represent the share of profits that are or web-data. Investments should include the project's total cost of ownership (TCO), not just the cost of external data. referable to enabled by While ROI is interesting, it is also valuable to look at the formula the other way: Determine the cost range needed to achieve a given result (benefits obtained with web data) with a desired or target ROI in mind. The share between these elements changes too much, case by case We have no cost benchmarks by these categories So we need to simplify this further, splitting between External Spending Internal Spending We use the Opimas research on web scraping, which allocates a global average estimate of approx 75% of the costs being internal (2022 data) and 25% external (pure data costs, in a broad sense). Understanding Web Data Returns Let’s be frank: No one can scientifically predict what will happen just because you use web data in your company. But there is one thing we can do: We can clearly define our expectations for the project based on similar activities we have done in the past, or others have done. Using this top-down approach, we identify the range of acceptable returns we are willing to achieve. And we do this by asking this simple question: What’s in it for me? “ ” “ ” Is this figure compatible with previous activities on pricing? Is this compatible with what we see in the market? How much should I reasonably expect dynamic pricing to help improve the bottom line? 1%? 10%? 20%? A fair answer will set a solid baseline for a proper ROI evaluation. And the answer depends on where in the process you are using web-data. From our experience, there are three main use cases: . Web-Data to build new services When data is used to create new services that deliver clearly identifiable new revenue streams. It wouldn’t be unfair for many businesses to consider the entire revenue stream of the new product as enabled by web-data. Example: For a 10M$ revenue web-data SaaS company with 1M$ in profits, returns enabled by web-data can be up to the entire 1M$ profit pool (10% of revenue). Seeking a 10X ROI, only a 100k$ TCO in web-data investment that can fit, which implies (25% of external costs) approximately 25k$ for data only. Web-Data to improve what already exists. This happens when we already have a product or service and want to enhance its performance using web data. We may want to price our products better, faster, or discount them only when needed, drive better trade-marketing negotiations, or have a faster product lifecycle development. Improving product performance can be harder to track ex-ante (meaning before you do the project) to the bottom line. A cautious approach suggests to use a single-digit percentage of current profits, as a proxy for expected returns. Example: A 1B$ brand, with 10% EBIT (100M$), a 5% profit uplift due to web-data adoption for price optimization, translated into a 5M$ expected return (0.5% of revenue). When they seek a 10X ROI, a 500k$ TCO in the project, 125k$ in pure data expenses. Web-Data to monitor the strategic alignment of operations. These typically are strategic, nonrecurrent projects of strategic planning or investor relations communications. They have a weaker direct relation with end results and should be treated as such. Estimating returns for strategic monitoring is far-fetched. There are intrinsic challenges to attributing returns directly to the general administration activity. In our models we use below-single digit attribution percentages. Example: A publicly listed online retailer with 1B$ in revenue, and 5% EBIT (50M$), can rarely allocate more than 0.1% of its results as a return for use of web-data in their strategic planning or 50k$ return (0.005% of revenue). With a 3X ROI (let’s give it a lower ROI for this activity), only a 16.7K$ TCO can do, implying a theoretical 4.1k$ expense in data. Conclusions Although the framework for web-data ROI contains many variables that have very wide ranges and need to be adjusted by company size, we have found in our own experience that they provide a pretty good ballpark for where the transactions for data will land. While the expected returns for a project are under little control, the attention should be on reducing the data costs, as we are promoting at Data Boutique. By depositing into these pools, they are effectively providing funding to DeFi projects, and in exchange, they receive a portion of the fees generated by the project as the yield on their investment. The Mechanics of Yield Farming Let’s dive deeper. The process of yield farming is facilitated by smart contracts, self-executing agreements written in code and stored on the blockchain network. These smart contracts automate the marketplace where users can lend, borrow, and exchange tokens. When an investor deposits their assets into a liquidity pool, it becomes available for other users to borrow and trade on automated market maker (AMM) platforms. The borrowed liquidity can potentially generate profits for the borrower if the value of the coin they trade with it changes. The interest charged on the borrowed liquidity is split between the depositors as interest and the protocol, which keeps a portion as trading fees. The returns an individual earns depend on the amount invested and the specific protocol rules. For example, is a positive-sum protocol that converts borrower's deposited collateral into an interest-bearing version (ibToken) through staking in a separate protocol. The ibToken generates yield, which is harvested daily and distributed to both borrowers and lenders. Lenders receive yield in-kind and borrowers in the yield token. For those new to farming, the protocol is a great starting point– users benefit from high, stable yields with low risks.
