Why is Roblox Special? 

The most popular game/platform in the world shows us how some of the darkest chapters of labor history can easily repeat themselves in virtual reality. British YouTuber blew the lid off of a long-simmering controversy surrounding Roblox, creator of one of the world’s most popular video games — or “platforms,” or “universes,” or whatever else it may be dubbed for the sake of legal expediencies. In 2021, Smith posted on his channel that attracted nearly two million views. This was followed by an attempt by at the beginning of this year to silence him. Rather than remove the first video, Smith and his team continued their investigation, uncovering even more lurid details about Roblox’s operations. The has since been viewed 7 million times. According to Smith, Roblox is working to turn back the clock on child and labor protections as well as to undercut antitrust laws. Worse, this strategy is symptomatic of the behavior of the tech sector as a whole. If he’s right, then Roblox may well be the harbinger of the kind of venal exploitation that will fester on the newly heralded “metaverse.” The two videos, which each deserve to be viewed themselves, paint a rapacious vision of Roblox. To begin with, the multiplayer platform draws on a core base of players aged 9 to 15: the premise is that children are coming together to make games for other children to play. To this end, Roblox offers free development tools and hosting. But Roblox’s games are not called “games” — they are “experiences.” This word game is used in order to avoid legal problems that would arise by placing Roblox (itself nominally a game) in other game stores. The reclassification maneuver has proven to be so successful that Roblox has grown into the most popular game in the US and Europe: there are 200 million monthly players and over 20 million hosted “experiences.” Compare these numbers to those of the video game distribution service Steam, which had 134 million monthly active users in 2021 and only 55,000 hosted games. However, while Steam takes a 30 percent commission from developers’ earnings, Roblox takes a staggering 75.5 percent, although that number is only the tip of the moneymaking juggernaut. In reality, Roblox is profiting at every turn. Their intuitive development tools do not require advanced development skills, but they don’t foster the development of any transferable skills either. Through a combination of marketing, summer camps, internships, and the ambiance of the game itself, players are immersed immediately in the virtual capitalism of the platform. The in-game currency is called Robux, and it is traded between players for in-game assets. For each transaction on the platform, Roblox takes an additional 30 percent commission. This is a closed economic system. It is impossible to promote your own product because Robox doesn’t allow for browsing games outside of a list of the most popular. Developers are left to either seek outside promotion or pay the platform itself for advertising by bidding in an auction (with Robux, no less). Aspiring developers are given an opportunity to form a development team with other players, paying them in Robux for their labor. Keep in mind, all of this has been set up for minors. When it comes to sucking up real bucks, Roblox is remarkably efficient: it reports that only 17 cents out of the dollar escapes its clutches. Aside from the strong incentive to reinvest in in-platform marketing, Roblox also disincentivizes withdrawals in other ways. To begin with, one needs a $5 monthly “premium” subscription to be able to withdraw funds, and then to do that you need to have a minimum balance of 100,000 Robux. And get this: Roblox sells 100,000 Robux for US $1,000, but buys them for only $350. When Roblox is challenged about these practices, its defense is that the company is not profitable. But, when Roblox went public on the stock market in 2021, it was valued at $41 billion, putting it just below and ahead of Electronic Arts, which means the company is worth seven times more than the game-developing giant Ubisoft. Nintendo Meanwhile, Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki’s net worth has been estimated at around $8.3 billion. As Smith points out, looking like it is losing money is the way that Roblox has rocketed to its current niche. Being listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021 may have marked the company’s arrival in the gaming market, but Roblox had already set up shop in the “metaverse” via its very own stock exchange of in-game assets bought and sold for in-game currency. This has led to some speculation that Robux may eventually make the leap to cryptocurrency. Last February (2022), the reported in that Roblox has a leg up on competitors in the race to monetize the metaverse. Citing a successful partnership with skateboarding lifestyle brand Vans, the article observes that “it’s easy to see how other brands will recognize the value in having a presence in the metaverse, and Roblox should be able to show it has the experience and success in hosting those brands.” Motley Fool Does Roblox Have a Plan to Win the Metaverse? Meanwhile, our understanding of this so-called “metaverse” is evolving rapidly. In a recent , Eric Ravenscraft noted that “the term doesn’t really refer to any one specific type of technology, but rather a broad (and often speculative) shift in how we interact with technology.” Maybe it isn’t a matter of Roblox “winning” the metaverse, then, but of helping to define it. Wired article When Facebook, Inc., changed its name last year to Platforms, Inc., it was to bring “the metaverse to life and help people connect.” The emerging metaverse, the company explained, “will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world.” Last week, Meta’s president of Global Affairs, realizing that this didn’t sound reassuring, : “There won’t be a Meta-run metaverse, just as there isn’t a ‘Microsoft internet’ or ‘Google internet’ today…. It isn’t a single piece of cloth, but a patchwork quilt.” Just what the metaverse will be in terms of aesthetics and technology is still unknown. But what is certain is that it will place an immense concentration of power into a few hands. And that suggests that some of the darkest chapters in labor history may be making a comeback. If platform capitalism is the economic term for these practices, then we can logically assume that the “metaverse” is going to serve as the candy-coating that will make such blatant inequity culturally and ethically palatable. The Social Dilemma Meanwhile, in April 2022, IT services consultant Accenture held with 150,000 new employees donning VR headsets. This is only the beginning. Perhaps, like Roblox, future corporations will pay their employees in company scrip worth 17 cents to the dollar. Or else children and other vulnerable populations, strapped into VR headsets, will be exploited for their cheap labor. In my recent conversation with Zach Letter, founder of Wonder Works, we discussed just that- the business and marketing of Roblox games. Wonder Works is an influencer studio that has created hits such as Overlook Bay and Traitor! Those two alone have had over 200 million plays alone. games Let’s jump in. Below is an edited transcript of the full interview. To start, I would to love to hear about how you got started with Wonder Works. I’ve had a very untraditional background when it comes to gaming. When I was a small child, I loved video games. My first gaming memory is playing Conan the Barbarian on the . But when I came to being an adult and having a career, I was fortunate enough to find YouTube really early. I started producing gaming videos and content in 2007 and turned that into a career for the better part of a decade. I amassed a few million subscribers and did over a billion views across all my channels. NES Then I met my wife, and in 2018, she wanted to start her influencer journey. She was doing a few things prior to 2018, but she started looking at Roblox and said, “Wow, this platform’s huge, and it seems really diverse, and I think I can build something with the IP that already exists there.” So she built a massive audience in just two short years. She has 10 million+ followers across all her social platforms. She’s done over a billion views as well. During her rise to success, I noticed she would have like 70k people watching a live stream. And I’m like, wow, you can command a lot of people to go do good, check things out. You can introduce them to new IPs and franchises. I’m like, maybe we should make our own game, and it’s something we could do in partnership with your audience, and they can be part of the process. And so, in 2019, we founded Wonder Works with that idea in mind, using social media to build a presence for a studio where the studio itself is an influencer in a way. I’ve never heard anyone describe a game studio as an influencer. Can you explain that? Wonder Works has a few unique approaches to user acquisition. I’ll start with how we acquired users on our first IP, Overlook Bay. I designed the experience from the ground up, and then a small team helped develop it. Just a team of two: one programmer and one environmental artist. We were kind of like guys in the garage trying to make our first product and see if people enjoyed it. When we were making it, we knew it was going to take us seven or eight months to produce. And we thought, okay, how are we going to market this game? Obviously, the low-hanging fruit was to use Megan’s brand and push as many people to it as we can. It’s about utilizing viral design, viral tactics to acquire users. But we were really new to making games. We love video games, but we didn’t know like what people really wanted on Roblox. We didn’t want to put Megan on the line, pushing millions of people to this game if it wasn’t ready. We decided to make a virtual influencer or a VTuber called Honey the Unicorn. And this was a character that existed in Megan’s universe and only appeared in Megan’s videos. Spoiler, I was Honey the Unicorn. We decided to make an animated face cam that we would put through Adobe, and we were going to give it a unique voice, a bedroom, a personality, and a webcam that it would then record gaming videos on. And our plan was that it would play games that were of the same genre as Overlook Bay on Roblox. Every audience member that they acquired would potentially be a player of Overlook Bay. And in just a few short months, they gained nearly three-quarters of a million subscribers, and we were doing millions of views every single month. And within two months of Overlook’s release, we gave Honey the Unicorn early access. He was doing demos and playthroughs, getting audience feedback, and he became part of our development team. Getting all these people watching all these videos and giving their feedback was so helpful to the design process. Because of this, we had over 1 million favorites on Overlook Bay before its release. There was so much attention across the entire Roblox community that we decided to release the game in paid access. And we sold 1.2 million copies at 25 cents each in two weeks. Within four weeks of release, we dropped it to free-to-play and had over 90k CCU and 26 million unique users. So that’s how we think of us as . It’s about utilizing viral design and viral tactics to acquire users. We never pay to acquire a user at Wonder Works. That’s something we really pride ourselves on. influencers We figure out how we can make content that’s organic enough to catch an influencer’s eye. How can our icon and our title speak to an influence when they’re scrolling through a page of hundreds of games? How else do you catch a YouTuber’s attention with your games? We have a network of hybrid casual experiences that have somewhat replayability. They’re not totally hypercasual, but we release one to two of those experiences every single week. To date, we have released six of them since late February. We’ve done nearly 100M visits on those, but over 100M views off-platform as well across those six titles. And one has nearly 50M on its own. And that’s not counting TikTok or YouTube Shorts. If we count those, it’s tens if not hundreds of millions more. It’s also about having an antagonist on the icon that’s a little bit disturbing, maybe not super appealing Let’s say we’re building a platformer. It needs to have a narrative and story to really appeal to YouTubers. You need to set them up with something. The dilemma of a YouTuber is having to produce daily content. They’ll say things like, “What am I doing today? I need something. I’ve been playing the same game for X months or X amount of years. Is there anything new that could help me out?” Our strategy with the HyperCatz network is we’re going to release two games a week for you. That should be a minimum of two videos out of your seven. And when we service LiveOps to these games as we have more in the network, we’re hoping that we can take up your full seven-day calendar. It’s also about having an antagonist on the icon that’s a little bit disturbing and maybe not super appealing. We’ve had some success with that, for example, Escape Your Evil Stepmom. We made her look a little bit ugly, a little bit robotic, and a little bit dead in the eyes. And kids were like, okay, I’m scared of her, but I wanna see what’s going on. We also really take a Mr. Beast approach to how we design these games. It’s about having a story that you can have a sense of completion in a session. And also, a lot of content nowadays doesn’t have you stay on one thing for too long. If you watch Mr. Beast’s videos, there’s a cut every three seconds, if not less. He’s never keeping your gaze on something for more than just a few seconds. And when we were designing our platformers, a lot of these 10-minute experiences have like 45 stages. It’s like the video basically make themselves. We’ve noticed YouTubers doing literally a playthrough of these experiences and then not editing them and then getting three million views on a video. What are your thoughts on the 29% developer cut on Roblox? One thing I always say to their defense with their take is that we never have to think about the backend. We never have to think about servers. Our game could have one player or one million CCUs, and our cost structure wouldn’t change a penny. So I think when it comes to developing games with broad appeal, it’s going to have a lot of users. We don’t have to think about things like: Are we going to have our servers crashing? Are we going to have to back up data? What are we doing with the players’ data? bears all of that responsibility for us. And I think that’s a decent trade. Roblox What’s the roadmap ahead for the Wonder Works team? Our goal this year is to have over 100 million monthly active users across our HyperCatz network and our flagship IPs. We’re moving towards that. We’re nearly 40 million monthly active right now. And we’re going to continue to expand to other platforms such as Fortnite. We’re actually releasing three Fortnite experiences this summer, along with probably 15-20 Roblox experiences as well. Our ultimate goal at Wonder Works is we want to create IP that could be the next , to create that forever game. Create something that can stand the test of time, go to franchise, go to direct-to-consumer retail, and series too on streaming platforms and services. The metaverse as a concept is more popular than ever. Thanks to the push from huge companies such as Meta, more people are getting engrossed with the idea of living virtual lives in a virtual world. This push has brought with it massive platforms like The Sandbox, an online collection of games and setpieces built on blockchain technology. However, The Sandbox is far from the first platform to provide these features in the first place. Many people are probably much more familiar with , known for its thousands of user-created games and hangout spaces. The many comparisons that can be made between the two must surely lead to a battle of The Sandbox vs. Roblox in the minds of metaverse enthusiasts. Roblox Which one will serve as a prime example of the future of gaming? Comparing The Sandbox and The Roblox This comparison will focus solely on what is offered by each platform. Features like profitability won’t be considered due to the volatile nature of cryptocurrency, but monetization and community aspects of The Sandbox (Season 3) and Roblox will be considered. Ease of Access The Sandbox is a platform built around cryptocurrency and the blockchain. As a result, the process of creating an account is somewhat more involved than Roblox. , a virtual wallet must be linked to the account during creation. This is because many features found within are built around NFTs and cryptocurrency, both of which would become unavailable to players otherwise. This ties into its monetization aspects at the cost of its ease of access. Anyone without these wallets, from children to adults unable to sign up for them, will be unable to use The Sandbox without outside help. One can see Roblox as a precursor to the metaverse, and while it’s not as deeply integrated with the concept as The Sandbox is, it’s undeniably much more accessible. Monetization and Community A prime point of contention in The Sandbox’s favor is how involved it is with monetization. While it’s a bit more difficult to enter than Roblox is, its play-to-earn model allows pretty much anyone to start earning genuine cash simply by visiting worlds and completing quests. This is reflected in its community of crypto enthusiasts. While smaller than Roblox’s community, The Sandbox has hundreds of fans looking to create and share robust experiences with others. The barriers to entry make for a group that’s more tightly-knit, making The Sandbox a very welcoming place for those creators unhappy with Roblox’s policies. Roblox’s greatest strengths — its ease-of-access and large community — are also its greatest weaknesses. Because it’s extremely easy for anyone to join, people from all ages are using Roblox to this day. This includes children, which means prior verifications are required for those wishing to start earning money. It’s also much more difficult to actually earn anything on Roblox, as many prizes are only usable within the game worlds themselves. This large community has also faced controversies in the past, from to . At worst. It’s extremely unlikely that these issues will appear in The Sandbox anytime soon, and it makes a strong case for why greater barriers to entry might be a good thing. the exploitation of young developers the exposure of sexual content to kids Overall Content Despite ease of access, monetization, and potential controversies, most players will look to these platforms based on the simple desires of entering new worlds and playing many different games. The Sandbox is still in its Alpha phase, and unfortunately that fact is made very apparent during gameplay. Many official worlds have only simple text-based quests, and the “combat” found within is nearly nonexistent. Every world also shares the same blocky style, from buildings and structures to characters and weapons. There isn’t much variety to be found in The Sandbox even when exploring some of the more obscure worlds within. There’s the very likely possibility that it will evolve over time, as even Roblox was stuck with a certain style at first, but it still has a long way to go before that happens. In terms of variety and content, Roblox once again takes the cake. Not only are there literally millions of different experiences on the platform, but the variety they boast is immense. Art styles, objectives, and even entire game genres are represented in hundreds of different ways. It makes sense that Roblox has such an incredible amount of content, having first released over 15 years ago, but it doesn’t change the fact that this content only continues to grow. Anyone is guaranteed to find something they’ll enjoy in Roblox whereas only a specific group of people will find themselves interested in The Sandbox. Final Thoughts on The Sandbox vs. Roblox Roblox is the clear winner here when purely considering gaming aspects. shares many features and qualities with Roblox, and in time it could very well become even more popular and beloved. But if metaverse games and experiences want to lay claim to the future of gaming, they’ll need to put heavier focus on making their experiences fun and varied rather than focusing wholly on monetization and crypto-based technology. Somewhere they try to maintain polite communication, forbid the exchange of adult content, and block access to users under 13 - the same age limit is set on Roblox itself. Somewhere, on the contrary, chaos reigns. Dialogues are full of racism and other types of hate, and administrators don't particularly monitor participants' behaviors. The creators of some Condo games also do not strive to monitor user behavior. Roblox surprised us with stories about in-game political intrigues, record growth rates, and digital product prices that are not typical for children's games. However, Roblox has been around for more than 15 years, and it has experienced such a short but bright splash of attention only recently. For many years, the platform manages to anticipate global trends. For example, it was possible to create your worlds in it even before Minecraft came out. And many years before the announcements of Meta and investments in the Epic Games meta world, Roblox introduced a working prototype of this concept. So soon, the platform may become more relevant than ever. Let's find out how Roblox works, what are the reasons for its rapid growth, and how its creators see the meta-universe of the future. Roblox - beginning The first versions of Roblox were developed at the beginning of the century by computer scientist David Baszucki. He always wanted to be an entrepreneur. After graduating from university in the late 1980s, he founded Knowledge Revolution and started creating educational software for the Macintosh. Even if all you wanted was to get into Ghosts 'n Goblins as fast as possible, you still needed to pick up a few commands. And the C-64 shipped with the BASIC manual. What if while you were unboxing your shiny new iPad, the first thing you picked up was a 200-page book on Swift and Objective-C. I bet a big chunk of this generation of software developers were accidental coders. And the booming game industry in the Nordics (where I live) likely owes a lot to these old machines. Then we entered the dark ages of the late 90s and the first decades of the 2000s. At this time, when you inspected someone's TV setup, all you found were Nintendos, Playstations and X-Boxes, completely useless with their user-friendly interfaces and their read-only cartridges and CDs. If you wanted to code on these machines (which was great), you already needed a degree in computer science and the patience to ply through guides on homebrew hacking. If you happened to be the weird kid that got a PC (or were forced by your parents), you should consider yourself lucky. But even then, the step to get into coding was not obvious. Another thing, at this time, games (which was the likely ambition for the aspiring coders) were getting good. The graphics were fantastic (thanks to all the old C-64 coders now working day and night at the fancy game studios). The 2D blocky Italian plumber had been replaced by huge immersive 3D worlds filled with hundreds of beautifully animated characters. Anything you happened to create (if you had the skills and drive to pick up programming) would likely look pretty embarrassing in comparison and certainly not something that got you any nerd street cred (some might argue that this was the time of early web with HTML and Javascript playing the sort of the same role, but is that really coding?). Fast forward to about 2016 when a sort of awkward but charming game creation system called Roblox (created by and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006) started to gain popularity. I know that it has faced criticism for marketing microtransactions to young children, but I’m talking primarily about Roblox Studio. David Baszucki Roblox allows players to create their own games using its proprietary engine, Roblox Studio, which other users can then play. The tool shares much of its DNA with existing professional game engines but at a much simpler level. Lua is the programming language of choice, and it bears a lot of resemblance to BASIC but with more modern software development concepts. Most games produced using Roblox Studio are developed by minors, and 20 million games a year are produced using it. It has never been easier for a kid to get into serious programming. YouTube is littered with videos and tutorials on pretty much every Roblox concept you can imagine. And from the most unexpected sources as well -  while trying to learn the engine, I’ve found myself repeatedly watching videos by 8-year olds on how to do Tween animation or custom Camera scripts. But I would argue that the most crucial aspect that is often overlooked is that the general quality of Roblox games is pretty bad, which is great! It means that the difference between what my eldest son and I are creating together is not too far from that trendy crazy tycoon game, “ ” or pet simulator of the time. Making a new game does not seem insurmountable since it is not expected to be a AAA title. obby I don’t think I can overstate the importance of this! Spending time writing games with my kids is amazing, and seeing how fast their skills develop is something I couldn’t possibly have imagined 35 years ago. There are always more things locked behind Robux, some games are straight-up unfair and do you really want to start a new tycoon game from scratch again? Using Roblox Hacks: 3 Things to Keep in Mind If you’ve taken the risk and installed a hack, following the instructions given, you’ll be able to alter your games to varying degrees. The hack tested for this article had a simple GUI that did indeed work as intended. 1. Read that hack’s instructions and follow them to the tee. Some technical knowledge may be required Reading the instructions for some of the more dangerous hacks shows that a degree of technical knowledge is required to use them. They need a way to load .lua scripts to alter the way the game works and to allow you to hack. It’s not something that most people would know about and lacking the knowledge is likely to make everything much harder. 2. Be prepared for a potential account ban Naturally, players will be able to report you for hacking and there will be plenty of evidence if they do so. Therefore, you shouldn’t really consider hacking if you’re worried about losing your account. Unfortunately, if you’re hoping to use hacks to get ahead in specific games, you’re mostly out of luck. Finding hacks for specific games was difficult and the one I found was the aforementioned Lumber Tycoon one. The hacks that you do get access to aren’t particularly helpful in most games outside of invulnerability helping in survival games. 3. Aimbots work, but aimbotters are easy to spot You might be tempted to aimbot in a game like this There are a few aimbots for some of , if you want to use them. These hacks will basically lock on to your targets for you, ensuring that every shot will hit with perfect accuracy. Roblox’s shooting games They aren’t new and experienced players would probably be able to tell if you’re using it. They are pretty easy to notice and you’ll want to be careful if you actually choose to use it. Final thoughts on using Roblox hacks Is it worth hacking Roblox? Probably not, unless you think that running a not-insignificant risk of installing malware onto your computer or getting your account banned for scant rewards at best is worthwhile. Flying and invulnerability is cool and all, but it won’t really help you get that far ahead in most games without getting you banned. Also, Roblox is constantly getting updated, meaning that hacks will need to be updated as well to work, posing yet another problem.
