The most popular game/platform in the world shows us how some of the darkest chapters of labor history can easily repeat themselves in virtual reality. British YouTuber blew the lid off of a long-simmering controversy surrounding Roblox, creator of one of the world’s most popular video games — or “platforms,” or “universes,” or whatever else it may be dubbed for the sake of legal expediencies. In 2021, Smith posted on his channel that attracted nearly two million views. This was followed by an attempt by at the beginning of this year to silence him. Rather than remove the first video, Smith and his team continued their investigation, uncovering even more lurid details about Roblox’s operations. The has since been viewed 7 million times. According to Smith, Roblox is working to turn back the clock on child and labor protections as well as to undercut antitrust laws. Worse, this strategy is symptomatic of the behavior of the tech sector as a whole. If he’s right, then Roblox may well be the harbinger of the kind of venal exploitation that will fester on the newly heralded “metaverse.” The two videos, which each deserve to be viewed themselves, paint a rapacious vision of Roblox. To begin with, the multiplayer platform draws on a core base of players aged 9 to 15: the premise is that children are coming together to make games for other children to play. To this end, Roblox offers free development tools and hosting. But Roblox’s games are not called “games” — they are “experiences.” This word game is used in order to avoid legal problems that would arise by placing Roblox (itself nominally a game) in other game stores. The reclassification maneuver has proven to be so successful that Roblox has grown into the most popular game in the US and Europe: there are 200 million monthly players and over 20 million hosted “experiences.” Compare these numbers to those of the video game distribution service Steam, which had 134 million monthly active users in 2021 and only 55,000 hosted games. However, while Steam takes a 30 percent commission from developers’ earnings, Roblox takes a staggering 75.5 percent, although that number is only the tip of the moneymaking juggernaut. In reality, Roblox is profiting at every turn. Their intuitive development tools do not require advanced development skills, but they don’t foster the development of any transferable skills either. Through a combination of marketing, summer camps, internships, and the ambiance of the game itself, players are immersed immediately in the virtual capitalism of the platform. The in-game currency is called Robux, and it is traded between players for in-game assets. For each transaction on the platform, Roblox takes an additional 30 percent commission. This is a closed economic system. It is impossible to promote your own product because Robox doesn’t allow for browsing games outside of a list of the most popular. Developers are left to either seek outside promotion or pay the platform itself for advertising by bidding in an auction (with Robux, no less). Aspiring developers are given an opportunity to form a development team with other players, paying them in Robux for their labor. Keep in mind, all of this has been set up for minors. When it comes to sucking up real bucks, Roblox is remarkably efficient: it reports that only 17 cents out of the dollar escapes its clutches. Aside from the strong incentive to reinvest in in-platform marketing, Roblox also disincentivizes withdrawals in other ways. To begin with, one needs a $5 monthly “premium” subscription to be able to withdraw funds, and then to do that you need to have a minimum balance of 100,000 Robux. And get this: Roblox sells 100,000 Robux for US $1,000, but buys them for only $350. When Roblox is challenged about these practices, its defense is that the company is not profitable. But, when Roblox went public on the stock market in 2021, it was valued at $41 billion, putting it just below and ahead of Electronic Arts, which means the company is worth seven times more than the game-developing giant Ubisoft. Nintendo Meanwhile, Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki’s net worth has been estimated at around $8.3 billion. As Smith points out, looking like it is losing money is the way that Roblox has rocketed to its current niche. This has led to some speculation that Robux may eventually make the leap to cryptocurrency. But what is certain is that it will place an immense concentration of power into a few hands. And that suggests that some of the darkest chapters in labor history may be making a comeback. In my recent conversation with Zach Letter, founder of Wonder Works, we discussed just that- the business and marketing of Roblox games. Wonder Works is an influencer studio that has created hits such as Overlook Bay and Traitor! Those two alone have had over 200 million plays alone. games Let’s jump in. Below is an edited transcript of the full interview. To start, I would to love to hear about how you got started with Wonder Works. I’ve had a very untraditional background when it comes to gaming. When I was a small child, I loved video games. My first gaming memory is playing Conan the Barbarian on the . But when I came to being an adult and having a career, I was fortunate enough to find YouTube really early. I started producing gaming videos and content in 2007 and turned that into a career for the better part of a decade. I amassed a few million subscribers and did over a billion views across all my channels. NES Then I met my wife, and in 2018, she wanted to start her influencer journey. She was doing a few things prior to 2018, but she started looking at Roblox and said, “Wow, this platform’s huge, and it seems really diverse, and I think I can build something with the IP that already exists there.” So she built a massive audience in just two short years. She has 10 million+ followers across all her social platforms. She’s done over a billion views as well. During her rise to success, I noticed she would have like 70k people watching a live stream. And I’m like, wow, you can command a lot of people to go do good, check things out. You can introduce them to new IPs and franchises. I’m like, maybe we should make our own game, and it’s something we could do in partnership with your audience, and they can be part of the process. And so, in 2019, we founded Wonder Works with that idea in mind, using social media to build a presence for a studio where the studio itself is an influencer in a way. I’ve never heard anyone describe a game studio as an influencer. Can you explain that? Wonder Works has a few unique approaches to user acquisition. I’ll start with how we acquired users on our first IP, Overlook Bay. I designed the experience from the ground up, and then a small team helped develop it. Just a team of two: one programmer and one environmental artist. We were kind of like guys in the garage trying to make our first product and see if people enjoyed it. When we were making it, we knew it was going to take us seven or eight months to produce. And we thought, okay, how are we going to market this game? Obviously, the low-hanging fruit was to use Megan’s brand and push as many people to it as we can. It’s about utilizing viral design, viral tactics to acquire users. But we were really new to making games. We love video games, but we didn’t know like what people really wanted on Roblox. We didn’t want to put Megan on the line, pushing millions of people to this game if it wasn’t ready. We decided to make a virtual influencer or a VTuber called Honey the Unicorn. And this was a character that existed in Megan’s universe and only appeared in Megan’s videos. Spoiler, I was Honey the Unicorn. We decided to make an animated face cam that we would put through Adobe, and we were going to give it a unique voice, a bedroom, a personality, and a webcam that it would then record gaming videos on. And our plan was that it would play games that were of the same genre as Overlook Bay on Roblox. Every audience member that they acquired would potentially be a player of Overlook Bay. And in just a few short months, they gained nearly three-quarters of a million subscribers, and we were doing millions of views every single month. And within two months of Overlook’s release, we gave Honey the Unicorn early access. He was doing demos and playthroughs, getting audience feedback, and he became part of our development team. Getting all these people watching all these videos and giving their feedback was so helpful to the design process. Because of this, we had over 1 million favorites on Overlook Bay before its release. There was so much attention across the entire Roblox community that we decided to release the game in paid access. And we sold 1.2 million copies at 25 cents each in two weeks. Within four weeks of release, we dropped it to free-to-play and had over 90k CCU and 26 million unique users. So that’s how we think of us as . It’s about utilizing viral design and viral tactics to acquire users. We never pay to acquire a user at Wonder Works. That’s something we really pride ourselves on. influencers We figure out how we can make content that’s organic enough to catch an influencer’s eye. How can our icon and our title speak to an influence when they’re scrolling through a page of hundreds of games? How else do you catch a YouTuber’s attention with your games? We have a network of hybrid casual experiences that have somewhat replayability. They’re not totally hypercasual, but we release one to two of those experiences every single week. To date, we have released six of them since late February. We’ve done nearly 100M visits on those, but over 100M views off-platform as well across those six titles. And one has nearly 50M on its own. And that’s not counting TikTok or YouTube Shorts. If we count those, it’s tens if not hundreds of millions more. It’s also about having an antagonist on the icon that’s a little bit disturbing, maybe not super appealing Let’s say we’re building a platformer. It needs to have a narrative and story to really appeal to YouTubers. You need to set them up with something. The dilemma of a YouTuber is having to produce daily content. They’ll say things like, “What am I doing today? I need something. I’ve been playing the same game for X months or X amount of years. Is there anything new that could help me out?” Our strategy with the HyperCatz network is we’re going to release two games a week for you. That should be a minimum of two videos out of your seven. And when we service LiveOps to these games as we have more in the network, we’re hoping that we can take up your full seven-day calendar. It’s also about having an antagonist on the icon that’s a little bit disturbing and maybe not super appealing. We’ve had some success with that, for example, Escape Your Evil Stepmom. We made her look a little bit ugly, a little bit robotic, and a little bit dead in the eyes. And kids were like, okay, I’m scared of her, but I wanna see what’s going on. We also really take a Mr. Beast approach to how we design these games. It’s about having a story that you can have a sense of completion in a session. And also, a lot of content nowadays doesn’t have you stay on one thing for too long. If you watch Mr. Beast’s videos, there’s a cut every three seconds, if not less. He’s never keeping your gaze on something for more than just a few seconds. And when we were designing our platformers, a lot of these 10-minute experiences have like 45 stages. It’s like the video basically make themselves. We’ve noticed YouTubers doing literally a playthrough of these experiences and then not editing them and then getting three million views on a video. What are your thoughts on the 29% developer cut on Roblox? One thing I always say to their defense with their take is that we never have to think about the backend. We never have to think about servers. Our game could have one player or one million CCUs, and our cost structure wouldn’t change a penny. So I think when it comes to developing games with broad appeal, it’s going to have a lot of users. We don’t have to think about things like: Are we going to have our servers crashing? Are we going to have to back up data? What are we doing with the players’ data? bears all of that responsibility for us. And I think that’s a decent trade. Roblox What’s the roadmap ahead for the Wonder Works team? Our goal this year is to have over 100 million monthly active users across our HyperCatz network and our flagship IPs. We’re moving towards that. We’re nearly 40 million monthly active right now. And we’re going to continue to expand to other platforms such as Fortnite. We’re actually releasing three Fortnite experiences this summer, along with probably 15-20 Roblox experiences as well. Our ultimate goal at Wonder Works is we want to create IP that could be the next , to create that forever game. Create something that can stand the test of time, go to franchise, go to direct-to-consumer retail, and series too on streaming platforms and services. Roblox Which one will serve as a prime example of the future of gaming? Comparing The Sandbox and The Roblox This comparison will focus solely on what is offered by each platform. Features like profitability won’t be considered due to the volatile nature of cryptocurrency, but monetization and community aspects of The Sandbox (Season 3) and Roblox will be considered. It makes sense that Roblox has such an incredible amount of content, having first released over 15 years ago, but it doesn’t change the fact that this content only continues to grow. Anyone is guaranteed to find something they’ll enjoy in Roblox whereas only a specific group of people will find themselves interested in The Sandbox. And even these lucky ones get pennies. Introduction to Roblox Roblox platform appeared in 2004, and for 18 years, it has become trendy. By April 2022, it had attracted more than 200 million people worldwide. For example, more than half of teenagers in the U.S. use Roblox. By installing Roblox, users get access to millions of games in different genres and free tools that are easy to learn. To find more about Roblox, you can read my article “ ”. The Multiverse of Madness: How Roblox Works The platform exists due to the author's games, so the platform managers are interested in users' creativity. And Roblox's target audience is children who want to create content for their peers. The vice-president of marketing confirms this. The strategy has paid off. Now, Roblox is more expensive than Ubisoft and Electronic Arts. Roblox attracts users not only with its free tools: the platform also does not charge for game hosting and moderation. However, all this does not bring money to the service, but rather the opposite. The platform earns money on a different basis: content monetization, for which the service has a lot of possibilities. It's impossible to play Roblox without making other gamers richer. The user will still want (or have to) buy something, whether game passes or cosmetic items. But after creating the first game, teenagers encounter unobvious obstacles. Trick economy Most underage developers do not get any income from their games. There are several reasons for this. First of all, Roblox does not help promote new games for free. The user sees only a few hundred popular titles in the Discovery tab, while their total number exceeds 20 million. The chance that your game will be noticed is almost zero. In addition, the app does not allow you to sort games by recent release or the names of new users, which would help newcomers in the promotion. Roblox has an Up-and-Coming section, but even there, the user sees games with several thousand users. The Learn and Explore section, where games with a few players are placed, helps a little, but there are no more than a couple of dozens of them. There is a way out of this situation. The user only needs to purchase advertising on the platform for in-game currency - Robux. It can be earned in games or purchased for real money. However, even this expenditure does not guarantee anything. The fact is that in Roblox, users participate in an auction for promotion. Considering that 400 Robux costs $5, it's not hard to imagine how much revenue the service authors get from gamers' attempts to get the general audience. I can compare this process to trying to record a viral video on TikTok or create a popular meme. The user has to hit a specific target audience (usually children), come up with the proper gameplay, and don't miss a promotion. The chance of missing is very high, and hundreds of competitors do not sleep. But even if the lucky player manages to make an exciting game and attract the public with advertising, they can still end up with nothing. Roblox takes a commission on each transaction, and the user gets the rest in Robux. The minimum threshold for converting them into real currency is 100 000 Robux (about a thousand dollars). Of course, most users don't manage to earn that 100 000 Robux even after spending money on advertising and a $5 premium subscription, which is required for withdrawal. The threshold seems incredibly high when compared to other games. For example, the authors of MMORPG Entropia Universe and Second Life allow you to withdraw amounts starting from $100 and $10, respectively. But the user will remain a loser even if he accumulates the required amount. They buy and sell currency at different rates. If a player wants to buy 100 000 Robux, he will have to spend more than $1000. However, if he withdraws that amount, he will earn only $350. R15 is far more customizable than its R6 counterpart due to having fifteen customizable body parts compared to the others six and thus is usually the more popular avatar type amongst players. Fourteen proved to be community administrators. And 3 of them even confirmed their age with documents. The atmosphere on these servers varies. Somewhere they try to maintain polite communication, forbid the exchange of adult content, and block access to users under 13 - the same age limit is set on Roblox itself. Somewhere, on the contrary, chaos reigns. Dialogues are full of racism and other types of hate, and administrators don't particularly monitor participants' behaviors. The creators of some Condo games also do not strive to monitor user behavior. For example, the 15-year-old owner of a Condo game and a Discord server with 3,500 members admitted in a conversation with Fast Company that he begs girls for explicit photos and then sells them. Discord does not verify the age of users when they register, so it's effortless for such communities to hide from moderation. Roblox surprised us with stories about in-game political intrigues, record growth rates, and digital product prices that are not typical for children's games. However, Roblox has been around for more than 15 years, and it has experienced such a short but bright splash of attention only recently. Within each land block, the virtual space is subdivided into 100 land units, where individual buildings and environments are based. A group of land units is known as an “estate”. Each bit country is represented by a small block in the Continuum with a unique coordinate. This block represents the essence of the community and is home to all of the content within that individual metaverse. The land units within each one can be independently owned, bought and sold on third-party marketplaces, represented by an NFT. Within each land unit, the owner (landlord) is able to build assets, sell products and services, display NFTs and host events - pretty much anything they can think of, in fact. Bit.Country is a fully decentralized metaverse which means landlords have complete freedom to customize their land units. They can use predetermined block themes provided by Bit.Country or by third-party developers, then decide on the features and images, style of the ground and walls of the buildings, the size and shape of the block and much more. The idea is that each block should be based on a topic, with whatever content is built inside corresponding to that topic. To acquire a new block and start building, budding landlords will have to purchase it at an auction. Fast forward to about 2016 when a sort of awkward but charming game creation system called Roblox (created by and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006) started to gain popularity. I know that it has faced criticism for marketing microtransactions to young children, but I’m talking primarily about Roblox Studio. David Baszucki Roblox allows players to create their own games using its proprietary engine, Roblox Studio, which other users can then play. The tool shares much of its DNA with existing professional game engines but at a much simpler level. Lua is the programming language of choice, and it bears a lot of resemblance to BASIC but with more modern software development concepts. But I would argue that the most crucial aspect that is often overlooked is that the general quality of Roblox games is pretty bad, which is great! Roman Entertainment incorporated mechanics like leaning to create a tactical atmosphere for the game which all but falls apart when the SCPs are released. It’s in the title and it’s in the game. Each level has its own SCP that will have its own strengths and weaknesses that you’ll need to figure out and deal with. It is in these moments where Task Force becomes a scary Roblox game. Specter by Lithium Labs Specter is a cooperative experience that has four players investigating one of many maps for clues to discover the identity of a supernatural entity in the area. It forces players to work in a team by forcing each person to carry one part of a larger toolkit necessary to identify and evade the computer-controlled entity chasing them down. The game is kept tense by forcing players to walk incredibly slowly and limiting visibility in the dark maps to what a flashlight can illuminate. With movement so slow and with visibility so limited, it’s easy to get snuck up on by the monster and, once it’s on you, escape is extremely difficult. Play it here 5. Probably not, unless you think that running a not-insignificant risk of installing malware onto your computer or getting your account banned for scant rewards at best is worthwhile. Flying and invulnerability is cool and all, but it won’t really help you get that far ahead in most games without getting you banned. Also, Roblox is constantly getting updated, meaning that hacks will need to be updated as well to work, posing yet another problem.
