I will get to the core of this blog about my journey into the world of HyperVMs, but before that, it is essential to know how I even got to this point. The Challenge of High Throughput Soon after I heard about Nuklai, I started to research the project to see what all the hype was about. I was really blown away by Nuklai’s vision to empower every user by allowing them to sell their data to other entities, shifting the power from big businesses to the users themselves. It is a simple yet profound vision because, to achieve it, much had to be done not just at the application level but also at the infrastructure and blockchain protocol levels. When dealing with massive amounts of data daily, the blockchain must handle an immense load that no current platform has achieved yet. People talk about Transactions Per Second (TPS), but few know what it truly takes to achieve such high TPS at the blockchain level. Yes, there are blockchains out there with high throughput, but often, they are very hacky and not true Layer 1s. Usually, the approach is to scale horizontally by creating Layer 2s, Layer 3s, sidechains, and whatnot. These solutions feel like patchwork to me because if you introduce an additional layer to your blockchain, increasing the TPS seems more like an afterthought than something built from the ground up. This is where HyperVMs come into play. HyperVMs, Unlocking High-Performance Blockchains But, what is a HyperVM? It’s essentially a virtual machine (VM) built using the HyperSDK framework. To understand HyperSDK, we first need to understand Avalanche. According to their documentation, Avalanche is an open-source platform for building decentralized applications in one interoperable, decentralized, and highly scalable ecosystem. Powered by a uniquely powerful consensus mechanism, Avalanche is the first ecosystem designed to accommodate the scale of global finance, with near-instant transaction finality. The Avalanche consensus mechanism is ridiculously fast, with less than 2 seconds of finality, meaning your transaction is processed and verified almost instantly. Avalanche also allows you to create your own Layer 1 blockchain (or subnet), and the best part is you are not confined to an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) powered subnet. Despite its large developer community, the EVM is not lightweight and comes with a lot of baggage. Theoretically, you could build your own VM in any language you want, as Avalanche provides that freedom. However, it is also true that it is rather difficult and time-intensive to do from scratch. Even if you use Subnet EVM to get started, it is complex to keep it up-to-date as the core code changes frequently. You need to keep up with maintaining it, which can become resource-intensive. HyperSDK addresses this issue by making it faster, safer, and easier to launch your own optimized blockchain on an Avalanche subnet. It hides much of the complexity, allowing you to focus on making your project unique rather than worrying about transaction serialization efficiency or increasing transaction throughput. With HyperSDK, you can build your own blockchain runtime with 500-1000 lines of code and still process thousands of transactions per second without needing a large team of engineers. If you’ve been checking DeFi projects last year, I’m sure you’ve noticed that many projects are using a point system to reward and celebrate active users. Of course, this point-reward system helps to attract new users and make them active. And increase the main key metrics for any DeFi projects, such as TVL, trading volume, liquidity, etc. These point systems are designed to reward users for various activities within these metrics, such as staking, liquidity provision, and referrals, among others. Projects like EigenLayer and Blast utilize point systems as a marketing and strategic tool, which in turn helps in bootstrapping network activity and fostering community growth. So, in this article, let’s take a look at how and why DeFi projects can use point systems to grow. And in the end, I will take a look at a couple of examples. I think this article would be useful for both DeFi projects and DeFi degens, as understanding the motivation behind a project's campaigns and activities will help to build the right DeFi strategy and understand the project's status. This also will help to analyze data the right way so that you can see it on different platforms like CoinGecko, different DEX, and API-integrated tools. Why DeFi projects use point rewards systems: As we spoke earlier, DeFi projects use points as a marketing instrument to reward users in several strategic ways, enhancing user engagement, loyalty, and overall participation within their ecosystems. And here’s why: 1. Token Airdrop Preparation Most of the time, points mean share in the upcoming airdrop. At least, most of the users think so. Sometimes, airdrops are announced as preliminary, but most of the time, users don’t know how much they will finally get. That makes them intrigued and engaged. Some of the projects fuel it up with rumors that they spread among degen chats and influencers. Upcoming airdrop expectation works pretty well. 2. Incentivizing Specific Behaviors Points are awarded to users for engaging in desired activities such as trading, staking, or providing liquidity. This not only boosts platform activity but also helps maintain a healthy and liquid market. 3. Hype and Buzz One of the biggest parts of promotional strategies is to create buzz around the project. That means that even after airdrop is done and/or the user needs some actions, he will use this platform even without rewards. 6. Long-term Participation Points can be structured to reward long-term participation, discouraging users from abandoning the platform after receiving initial incentives. This can help maintain a stable and growing user base. 7. Enhancing User Experience through Gamification By incorporating game-like elements such as points, leaderboards, and achievement badges, DeFi projects can make the user experience more enjoyable and engaging. This gamification can lead to increased user retention and more active participation. 8. Regulatory Navigation In some jurisdictions, the regulatory status of tokens can be uncertain. By using points, DeFi projects can engage users and grow their ecosystems without immediately issuing tokens, thus navigating regulatory challenges more effectively. 9. Performance Metrics And, of course, besides the big and active community, DeFi projects need high performance. More users create higher key metrics like TVL, pool liquidity levels, and so on that new potential audiences can see via analytical tools and graphics. EigenLayer - This Ether restacking protocol awards points to users for restocking Ethereum or Liquid Staking Tokens (LSTs) within its ecosystem. These points may qualify users for potential airdrops and prioritize them in various protocol activities. Blast - a Layer 2 solution built on Ethereum, employs a point system that rewards users for staking ETH, using dApss, and participating in its referral program. The points accrued can significantly enhance user rewards, including eligibility for airdrops of BLAST tokens. Blur - As an NFT marketplace, Blur introduced a points system to reward users who list and bid on items, as well as those who lend their assets. Friend.Tech - A web3 social networking app that supplies points to users who interact with the platform. These points could potentially convert into tokens in the future. My advice is to check different projects that use the point system as a tool and check how they do it. They all have something in common, but at the same time, many projects use pretty unique point system design. The result is a reluctance to liquidate crypto assets, hesitation to engage with the crypto market, frequent errors in tax reporting, and a pervasive distrust between crypto participants and tax authorities. Despite improvements over time, this gap in understanding and trust continues to be a significant source of anxiety, especially for smaller investors in the crypto space. What trends or changes in the crypto market have increased the demand for robust crypto tax reporting tools? The demand for robust crypto tax reporting tools has surged due to several key trends in the crypto market. Firstly, the policy shift by neobanks, which began collecting tax information, has closed avenues previously used to obscure crypto income. This change significantly impacted the way users handle their crypto finances. Secondly, the wider adoption of cryptocurrencies has brought a larger group of people into the fold, many inexperienced in managing and reporting crypto-related taxes. Can you walk us through how the Nexo-Koinly integration works from a user's perspective? We've made the integration quick and easy to use. All a client has to do is click on the Koinly button at the top of their "Transactions" section. Then, they receive a pop-up informing them that an account with Koinly will be created, and Nexo will share their name, email address, and transaction history. It is very important for us that our clients are aware of what information we share with our partners before proceeding. If the user decides to proceed, an account is created in Koinly, and the system redirects them to the Koinly website. Koinly pulls the transaction history from Nexo and imports it into the account – it is seamless, so clients don't need to do anything. The client can generate tax reports from there through the new Koinly account. All reports are jurisdiction-specific (and we've got clients in 200+ jurisdictions), so our users can always generate the exact report they need. What impact do you foresee this collaboration's overall tax compliance among crypto investors? The collaboration between Nexo and Koinly aims to improve crypto investors' tax compliance significantly. Simplifying processes often increase usage; this integration does that for tax reporting. Historically, a segment of crypto users preferred not to cash out their assets, opting for solutions like Nexo's Instant Crypto Credit Lines for liquidity and we expect users to continue to opt for it. But with tax reporting made easier, we're proud to be making the option to cash out on your crypto easier and less daunting. This direct engagement is key in educating our users and addressing their concerns regarding crypto tax compliance. How do you see the demand for crypto tax solutions evolving? I'm an optimist and a strong believer in blockchain and crypto solutions, so I can only say that I think demand will grow with adoption. If we want jurisdictions to trust crypto users and accept this industry as a full-fledged part of the financial sector, they have to. From here, the next step in addressing the complexities of crypto taxation would be for governments to work with crypto companies and their tax partners. This would minimize end-user fees and greatly simplify the process for all parties involved (governments, consumers, crypto companies, crypto tax reporting intermediaries). Could you explain the basic psychology behind cashback incentives and how they tend to influence consumer spending habits? How do they compare with other financial incentives, such as discounts or loyalty points, in influencing consumer behavior? Cashback acts as a reward mechanism, especially effective in fintech and crypto industries, where it doubles as a savings tool. When consumers use cashback incentives, they save money on purchases through cashback while spending, enhancing the appeal of transactions. The impact here is twofold. Firstly, consumers feel they are getting more value for their money, as cashback effectively reduces the net cost of purchases. This perception of getting a deal increases the likelihood of further spending. Secondly, unlike direct discounts, cashback is credited into the consumer's account, subtly encouraging reinvestment or reuse within the same ecosystem and fostering ongoing engagement. However, cashback is a more short-term strategy. Our focus goes beyond this into more sustainable mechanisms like our loyalty program and Earn Crypto Interest product that provides longer-term wealth growth for our customers. This approach incentivizes immediate spending and aligns with long-term financial goals, resonating more deeply with consumers. How does the Nexo Card integrate cryptocurrency and traditional currency transactions? Can users seamlessly switch between the two? Yes, absolutely! It all works with a simple toggle in the app between Credit Mode and Debit Mode and by adjusting what spending priority you would like to have for all the assets in your account. When using Credit Mode, the client effectively uses Nexo's Instant Crypto Credit Lines. The required amount of crypto in their account is collateralized, and our systems automatically send the relevant amount of whichever traditional currency is requested to the client's desired bank account. In Debit mode, the mechanism is slightly different. When a client spends EURx, USDx, GBPx, BTC, ETH, or any other cryptocurrency, we instantly sell the needed balance of the relevant currency. Now, this sum reaches the merchant in whichever traditional currency is being spent. Swapping between these two modes can take a single tap and is instant. Clients can make one transaction using Credit mode and another in Debit mode a second apart if they wish. The same goes for switching between spending crypto and spending fiat in Debit Mode. Clients can adjust their spending priority on the go to spend BTC with one transaction and then revert to spending their euro-based balance in their next transaction moments later. While the Nexo Card is currently available only in the European Economic Area, we are working on showing its true potential through our planned product expansion soon. Here's why: First, our card could help with currency stability and conversion. It allows users to hold their funds in cryptocurrencies, which can be more stable than local currencies in some emerging markets. When making transactions, the crypto is converted to the local currency in real-time, providing a hedge against local currency volatility. This would be especially useful in countries like Argentina and Turkey, which we are looking into. Secondly, the Nexo Card is also handy in places with economic and political instability. Cryptocurrencies and crypto cards are considered a safer alternative in countries facing economic challenges or political instability. This is especially relevant in regions where political decisions might affect traditional financial systems. For instance, in Nov. 2023, Argentina raised taxes on USD purchases destined for savings or made with bank cards. The crypto card is a great alternative in such cases. In countries with strict capital controls, the card offers a way to circumvent these restrictions. For instance, Argentinians cannot buy more than $200 p.m. But with a tool like the Nexo Card, individuals can make international payments and access funds more freely and for the sums they want/need than through traditional banking systems. This is why we're looking to expand into regions beyond Europe regarding our card.
