Why Joseph Weizenbaum built ELIZA does not appear to be much of a mystery; Isn’t the answer just as simple as Pamela McCorduck put it in Machines Who Think[33]: “[...] Weizenbaum got interested in language. Ed Feigenbaum introduced him to [...] Kenneth Colby, a psychiatrist who had [...] turned to computers as a possible way of gaining new insights into neurotic behavior. [...] In 1963, Weizenbaum went to MIT, [where] he designed a program that would answer [simple questions]. It was a short, tricky program, based on sleight of hand, and it led Weizenbaum to ask himself some very serious questions about mystification and the computer [...]. [If] you could do a simple question-answering machine, why not a complicated one? How different would complexity make such a machine? Could you seem to have complex responses based on simple rules? [...] Weizenbaum drove into work many a morning with his neighbor Victor Yngve, who had developed the COMIT language, for pattern matching. If you were going to play around with matching patterns, why not the patterns in English words and sentences? ELIZA was the result. ELIZA was intended to simulate—or caricature, as Weizenbaum himself suggests—the conversation between a Rogerian psychoanalyst and a patient, with the machine in the role of analyst.” The reason that Weizenbaum gives McCorduck for choosing the Rogerian setting was the simplicity of creating an “illusion of mutual understanding”: “What I mean here is the cocktail party conversation. Someone says something to you that you really don’t fully understand, but because of the context and lots of other things, you are in fact able to give a response which appears appropriate, and in fact the conversation continues for quite a long time. We do it all the time, not only at cocktail parties. Indeed, I think it’s a very necessary mechanism, because we can’t, even in serious discussion, probe to the limit of possible understanding. [...] That’s necessary. It’s not cheating.”[33, pp. 251–253] When Weizenbaum was looking for a context where he could carry on that sort of illusion, he needed one where ignorance would not destroy the illusion of understanding: “For example [he goes on], in the psychiatric interview the psychiatrist says, tell me about the fishing fleet in San Francisco. One doesn’t say, “Look, he’s a smart man—how come he doesn’t know about the fishing fleet in San Francisco?” What he really wants to hear is what the patient has to say about it. [...]”[33, pp. 251–253] [italics as in the original] However, as mentioned above, the title of Weizenbaum’s 1966 paper belies – or at least complexifies – the post hoc account he gave McCorduck. The title of the paper is not “ELIZA – A Computer Program that Simulates or Caricatures the conversation between a Rogerian psychoanalyst and a patient.” but rather: “ELIZA – A Computer Program For the Study of Natural Language Communication Between Man And Machine”.[47] This, and other features of that paper that I go into below, as well as a recently discovered manuscript signed in Weizenbaum’s own hand[2], suggest that ELIZA was not, as quoted by McCorduck “intended to simulate—or caricature [...] the conversation between a Rogerian psychoanalyst and a patient”, but rather that it was intended, just as the title of the paper says, as a platform for research in [human]-machine communication. To understand the details of this misinterpretation, we need to understand the context in which ELIZA appeared, and how ELIZA came it into the public eye. Author:

We intuit that the fundamental structure of dark matter/energy is the space-time quanta. Previous studies suggested that a minimal length of measurements forms a dark matter candidate [74]. There is an interesting observation about the 24-cell. All permutations of vertices in 24-cell are given by factorial 24! = 6.2044 x 1023 which is quite close to the Avogadro number (6.0221 x 1023) which determines the "approximate" number of nucleons per gram of matter based on thermodynamical and statistical computations. The relative error between the two values is around 2.9%. This may shed light on the geometric meaning of the mole unit. The number of observable stars in the universe is between 102 to 1023! [75, 76] which is again close to the number predicted by 24-cell. According to the interpretation of creating a mass of space-time quanta by vanishing uncertainty, the minimal length is expected to correspond to the electroweak length scale at which masses are created. Therefore, the minimal length is determined from the measured Higgs mass (~ 125.35 GeV/c%) [76] and substituting it in Eq. (9) that implies a minimal length as follows: K LI～10-18m This would give the length scale at which uncertainty vanishes to form a mass of space-time quanta. In that sense, we reinterpret the Higgs mechanism as a state in which the uncertainty vanishes to form the mass of space-time quanta. The electroweak length scale determines the unique length of the 24-cell. The effective minimal length has been interpreted recently as a charge radius of scattering for every physical particle [77]. Recent studies show that the minimum measurable charge radius measured so far is around 10-18 for the neutrinos, Higgs, W-bosons, and Z-boson, [76, 78, 79] which is consistent with our interpretations. One notice that the permutations of the 16-cell that forms the gluons part of the 24-cell are equal to factorial 8! and the permutation of tesseract that represents Higgs, photon, W, Z, quarks, and leptons is given by factorial 16!. Based on our model, the 16-cell represents the Planck scale and the tesseract represents the electroweak scale. The multiplications of their permutations (8!16! = 8.4360689 × 1017) may explain the scale ratio between the Planck scale and the electroweak scale. The measured scale ratio between the Planck scale and the electroweak scale is approximately 1017. This may imply a quantum computational explanation of the hierarchy in nature. ProPublica Heather Vogell this week alleging that a company that makes price-setting software for Renters filed a lawsuit apartments and nine of the nation’s biggest property managers formed a cartel to artificially inflate rents in violation of federal law. The lawsuit was filed days after raising concerns that the software, sold by Texas-based RealPage, is potentially pushing rent prices above competitive levels, facilitating price fixing or both. ProPublica published an investigation The proposed class-action lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in San Diego. In an email, a RealPage representative said that the company “strongly denies the allegations and will vigorously defend against the lawsuit.” She declined to comment further, saying the company does not comment on pending litigation. The nine property managers named in the lawsuit did not respond immediately to a request for comment. They included some of the nation’s largest landlords, such as Greystar, Lincoln Property Company, Equity Residential, Mid-America Apartment Communities and FPI Management — which together manage hundreds of thousands of apartments. Four of the five renters named in the suit were Greystar tenants. A fifth rented from Security Properties. Their apartments were located in San Diego, San Francisco and two Washington state cities, Redmond and Everett. The lawsuit accused the property managers and RealPage of forming “a cartel to artificially inflate the price of and artificially decrease the supply and output of multifamily residential real estate leases from competitive levels.” RealPage’s software uses an algorithm to churn through a trove of data each night to suggest daily prices for available rental units. The software uses not only information about the apartment being priced and the property where it is located, but also private data on what nearby competitors are charging in rents. The software considers actual rents paid to those rivals — not just what they are advertising, the company told ProPublica. ProPublica’s investigation found that the software’s design and reach have raised questions among experts about whether it is helping the country’s biggest landlords indirectly coordinate pricing — potentially in violation of federal law. In one neighborhood in downtown Seattle, ProPublica found, 70% of more than 9,000 apartments were controlled by just 10 property managers, who all used RealPage pricing software in at least some of their buildings. RealPage told ProPublica that the company “uses aggregated market data from a variety of sources in a legally compliant manner.” The company also said that landlords who use employees to manually set prices “typically” conduct phone surveys to check competitors’ rents, which the company says could result in anti-competitive behavior. “RealPage’s revenue management solutions prioritize a property’s own internal supply/demand dynamics over external factors such as competitors’ rents,” said, “and therefore help eliminate the risk of collusion that could occur with manual pricing.” a company statement The lawsuit said that RealPage’s software helps stagger lease renewals to artificially smooth out natural imbalances in supply and demand, which discourages landlords from undercutting pricing achieved by the cartel. Property managers “thus held vacant rental units unoccupied for periods of time (rejecting the historical adage to keep the ‘heads in the beds’) to ensure that, collectively, there is not one period in which the market faces an oversupply of residential real estate properties for lease, keeping prices higher,” it said. Such staggering helped the group avoid “a race to the bottom” on rents, the lawsuit said. RealPage brags that clients — who agree to provide RealPage real-time access to sensitive and nonpublic data — experience “rental rate improvements, year over year, between 5% and 12% in every market,” the lawsuit said. RealPage encourages property companies to have daily calls with a RealPage pricing adviser and discourages deviating from the rent price suggested by the software, the lawsuit said. The lawsuit was filed by four law firms and a nonprofit, Justice Catalyst Law, dedicated to developing cases and legal strategies that advance economic and social justice. Gary Smith Jr., one of the lawyers involved, said the investigation into the case had been going on for more than a year. “Today’s lawsuit plausibly alleges that Lessors of rental units have coordinated to drive rents up to unprecedented levels, exacerbating the nation’s affordable housing crisis,” Smith said in a media release. RealPage counts some of the largest property managers in the country among its clients. Many favor cities where rent has been rising rapidly, according to a ProPublica analysis of five of the country’s top 10 property managers as of 2020. All five use RealPage pricing software in at least some buildings, and together they control thousands of apartments in metro areas such as Denver; Nashville, Tennessee; Atlanta and Seattle, where rents for a typical two-bedroom apartment rose 30% or more between 2014 and 2019. Greystar and FPI Management each control hundreds of buildings in metro areas where rents have risen steeply in recent years. And Equity Residential, Lincoln Property Company and Mid-America Apartment Communities each manage dozens of buildings in high-growth markets. RealPage’s clients may gravitate toward high rent-growth markets for several reasons. For instance, tenants in those areas will bear more rent hikes and so offer an opportunity to landlords to make more money.
