Tally operates completely on its own, gathering image data and analyzing it to notify store staff about out-of-stock products or incorrect pricing. Future outlook, limitations, and one grand question Currently, most computer vision applications still need to be fed data externally to provide value. The next big step will be the widespread adoption of vision-enabled robots that can train themselves. As soon as this major shift happens, we will see more machines replacing humans, operating and learning on their own. However, as we entrust machines to make ever more complex decisions, we will inevitably face the ‘black box’ problem of AI. Even the ones who design sophisticated systems for autonomous cars can’t often connect the dots between AI’s reasoning and its actions in each particular case. And when it comes to safety, we better understand the inner workings of AI to maintain control. A few fatal accidents have already been enough to question the technology and raise many public concerns. The ultimate question of ‘Do I need computer vision for my business’ is probably too broad and too early to answer. Companies are yet to publicize their projects’ ROIs for us to make conclusions. On the other hand, business leaders need to keep their ears to the ground as computer vision-focused startups continue to receive rounds of six-figure funding.

How Computer Vision is Taking Over Manufacturing and Retail

Let’s take a closer, albeit speculative, look at possible ways in which these, so revolutions fundamental to a better world imagined by many of us and the economists, might happen. While other definitions of “better worlds” are possible, that is something left for a different discussion. Where could a single entrepreneur driven by passion and a vision enter the market with simple products and drive to much larger scale over twenty years or so? Remember that twenty years ago in 1997 Google didn’t exist, and neither did Facebook. Media had not felt the push of Facebook, Youtube, Twitter. Amazon was very nascent and not yet starting to reinvent retail. Apple was under traditional “proper management” struggling to survive, while Uber, AirBnB, Pinterest were not even glimmers. Phones were made by traditional institutions like Motorola and Nokia, the mobile phone as we know it did not exist, and the Motorola and Nokia phones were mostly used for “talking.” There was no “app for that”. I was personally ridiculed when I suggested then that the Internet should not be ATM protocols but rather TCP/IP. In fact, Juniper Networks was the only company committed to building TCP/IP Internet protocols for the public Internet (No, Cisco was building routers for the Internet but had bought an ATM protocol company that would be their public Internet network play). Going further back through my career, in 1985 the idea of a computer in every home was considered absurd, grandma using email in 1990 was thought ridiculous, and the Internet was a crazy idea and never going to be an important public network in 1995. Change happens but is not credible until after the fact. Retrospective predictability by pundits is common, but until large change happens one sees mostly skepticism. I have hence come to believe in the power of ideas driven by entrepreneurial energy by almost foolish, somewhat naive entrepreneurs, by those who didn’t know what could not be done. Almost no major change is driven by institutions that one would expect to have power to cause that change! Did Walmart innovate retail or Amazon? Did Boeing/Lockheed innovate space or SpaceX? Did GM innovate cars or Tesla and Waymo? Did Youtube/Netflix/Facebook/Twitter innovate media or NBC? Is there any area where a major innovation came from an institution? What are the non-governmental components of GDP that can be re-imagined/reinvented with an entrepreneurial rather than a policy/legislative/regulatory approach? Apple reminded everyone that Netflix has plenty of company in New Hollywood And this is why Apple's victory matters: Old Hollywood really now has an industry to fear, not just Netflix. It's a wealthy and powerful industry siphoning off talent from Old Hollywood and distributing its own films on its own terms. Slowly but surely, Apple has been making its mark on the entertainment world notably with the wildly successful , which put Apple on the map as an entertainment brand. To be sure, Apple did not make – Apple spent $25 million for the distribution rights for the movie. But even still, goes down as a Best Picture win for Apple, and now is noting that “Apple TV+ is Hollywood’s most intriguing streaming service.” It’s also interesting to note that the commercial run of CODA peaked at about 100 theaters. As ’s Dade Hayes wrote, “With about $1.2 million in box office, it is the clearest statement yet by a streaming entity about theaters being immaterial to Oscar success.” Ted Lasso CODA CODA Fortune Deadline Apple’s success happens at a time when the Oscars are in transition from the ultimate arbiter of Old Hollywood success to one of many yardsticks by which New Hollywood is critically measured. TV ratings for the Academy Awards have declined since 2000. Although ratings for the 2022 telecast improved over the all-time low set in 2021, ratings are still far below what they once were. Meanwhile, ticket sales for motion pictures shown in theaters have been on the decline since before Covid-19. Traditionally, the Oscars have honored movies that are produced and distributed the Old Hollywood way: in theaters. The ceremony itself is a big-tent moment designed to stop everyone in their tracks, gather around a TV screen, and pay homage to the power of Old Hollywood. But audiences and viewing habits have changed. We don’t wait around for big-tent moments. We gobble up content on demand. We don’t plan our evenings around movies scheduled by movie theaters based on their timetables. We live in the world that New Hollywood has created for us; art and entertainment personalized to our fragmented tastes thanks to a right-brain/left-brain combination of: AI-based audience measurement tools that anticipate what we want. The human judgment of creatives who have fled Old Hollywood to find the artistic freedom that streaming companies promise (even if they don’t always deliver on that promise). We dine on a New Hollywood buffet of movies created by and for streaming platforms, and limited series such as , , and . And those limited series are blurring the lines between movies and TV with strong production values and sophisticated plots and character development unrestrained by the conventions of network television. Squid Game The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel The Mandalorian There was a time when Old Hollywood movies bestowed power and cultural importance on “real” stars. Television was considered second-tier. But arguably HBO changed all that by unleashing a remarkable run of prestigious shows such as , which challenged and surpassed motion pictures for artistic merit and popularity. Streaming companies learned from HBO that the small screen could generate great art and popular entertainment – quiet, thoughtful movies such as and dramatic limited series such as . Anya Taylor-Joy’s acting in and Olivia Colman’s performance in were not just “good as far as TV goes” – they were as good or better than anything Old Hollywood could offer on the big screen. With Apple’s victory at the 2022 Oscars, Increasingly, New Hollywood has nothing left to prove to Old Hollywood (except to investors). How will the Oscars adapt to New Hollywood’s reign?
