Many years ago when I was in my teens, I lived in a small Kentucky, USA town and one of my requirements in school was to learn Spanish. I enjoyed learning this new language, but I became discouraged. I struggled to understand the point of learning Spanish. A much younger me thought, "Why? No one here speaks Spanish... And I won't have the money or ability to travel in the near future or maybe even at all...." I think I voiced this to my 10th grade Spanish teacher, Susan Stucker, who tried to encourage me. She found a way for me to participate at little cost in a two week student exchange living with a host family in the northern suburbs of Madrid.\ “Estoy harta de tu queja.” I vaguely remember her saying this. “I am tired of your complaining.” My talkative teacher arranged for me to go on this trip. I never thought I would be going to Spain, but she found some unknown funds from generous donors. Suddenly, I was on an airplane to Spain with her and 5 or 6 other students.\ I was a good student and rather than being someone whose comportment my teacher worried about, she was encouraging me to be less uptight. \ “Try the sangria.”\ I know she thought this experience would change my life, but I don’t think she knew when that would happen. \ My Spanish was just a little better at the time than the other students. I remember being a human dictionary for them (a teen Google Translate of sorts) when they wanted to tell a shopkeeper what flavor of candy or ice cream they wanted. “Fresa.”   “Strawberry”\ I remember the smell of fried sardines the mother of my host family made. It was so delicious! And I recall the pounds I gained from the rich chorizo and chocolates she packed for me to take in a sack lunch. Though our student budget was slim, we did go into the urban areas of Madrid once or twice to see the Prado Museum and Fountain of Cibeles. I remember having very little pocket money. I did not buy any souvenirs. I was able to buy a Spanish chocolate candy bar to bring back home for a “best” friend who was disappointed when she saw it. “You got me a chocolate bar from Spain? That’s it?”\ I was not a hardy traveler and it took me a while to get over the strenuous emotional changes that happen sometimes with international travel. Wanderlust lay dormant for decades, but ultimately, I decided to travel again. My experiences led me to return to Spain this year. I have been studying Spanish part time and online for the past 2 years. My ability to understand and even speak Spanish has increased some. I have a greater appreciation for learning this and any language as well as the cultures of the Spanish speaking world. While I am far from fluent in Spanish even with continued study, I am improving and I greatly appreciate my high school teacher, Susan Stucker, for her encouragement and for broadening my worldview at an early age. I was worried about going on this trip but it was not because I did not want to go. I was experiencing a fear of leaving my comfort zone. My short trip with a tour group took me again to the northern suburbs of Spain and to the Prado Museum, but I also traveled to a few other cities and experienced a Spain much different than the one from my youth. Though it was not on the itinerary, someone on my trip convinced me to go with her and others to a bullfight. This would not have been something I chose to do ordinarily, but I tried to go into this experience with an open mind and see what I could learn. I got a ticket for the bullfight but because we had waited until the last minute to get seating, there were no seats together. I bought a seat far away from the others. As I tried to climb the stadium steps to my seat, I asked other spectators along the way for help finding my spot. I did sit in the wrong place (awkward as ever) and had to be notified by my neighbors. Ultimately, I found a spot to sit on the concrete and I watched the bullfight respectfully and peacefully, taking occasional pictures like a tourist, and speaking whatever garbled Spanish I knew with my kind neighbors to either side. I won’t pretend I know much about the history or actual meaning of bullfighting. I also can’t comment on the animal safety aspects of this because I don’t know much about that. I tried to show respect for the cultural event and come to the stadium with a beginner’s mind. With these caveats in mind, I just want to share what I felt internally and what I learned about confidence from the bullfight. The bullfight occurs in a large arena in a stadium. This arena seemed to me like a metaphor for life. Death likely occurs in the arena and comes for someone. There is a living being that will not get out of the arena alive. Will it be the bull? Will it be the matador? There are more humans in the arena that work together to stack the deck against the bull. It's not fair? Life isn’t fair. The circumstances that bring the bull and the matador to the arena are governed by chance as well. Both the matadors and the bull have the potential to kill each other in the arena. I found that I could not look away. The reason I could not look away was that I felt connected to the bull and matador in their actions to relive what I felt were the lessons of the arena, the lessons of life. In the arena, the matadors must distract the bull from hurting them and also actively seek the bull’s death. I was told that the bull must be naive to the ways of bullfighting to participate. During the process, the matador leads with confidence and hides whatever fear he might have of the bull’s size, aggression and ferocity. There is a potential for severe disability and even death if the bull harms the matador, but it is crucial that the matadors never break character. They work as a team to distract, confuse and wound the bull. The matadors play to an audience of hundreds drawing all eyes to them in a spectacle who bellow “Olé" in a pleased fashion if they are doing well. The 5 rules of the matador:

The bull is a tremendously strong and dangerous animal that I was told was bred to be aggressive. During the course of the bullfight, the matadors confuse and wound the bull several times. I tried to learn from the experience so that their sacrifices would teach me something. What I learned about confidence from this experience was so valuable to me. We are all dancing a dance of mindset when we are trying to be confident. We don’t want to show the enemy our fears so that we can vanquish them. Whether it's facing a micromanaging boss or an ex that hates your guts and is sashaying with their new girlfriend in your direction, there are people with whom and times at which it's important to show how unafraid you are. The bravado protects you more than actually not feeling afraid. Being genuine and vulnerable has its place, but so does hiding your flaws and exhibiting confidence like a shiny coat of armor. My trip to Spain was short, but what I learned from my experiences might last a long time.  I don't think my high school Spanish teacher would have expected that I would learn my Spanish lessons decades later. They are life lessons instead. I don’t think she expected her good deed to help me get to Spain for the student exchange would have this effect. But then again, neither did I. This application required users to have an active Facebook account with at least ten friends to be able to participate in the study. As a cover story, participants were told that the study would support the development of a Face-detection algorithm for a Facebook application that can automatically tag people in pictures and their task is to train this algorithm. Prior to logging on Facebook, the participants were asked to list the names of three of their friends with whom they have the most online interactions. After training phase, the app measured the repeated measures dependent variable: participants’ tendency to use the tagging feature for tagging themselves (or each of these three friends) in their own (or in each of these three friends’) photos. Figure 2 shows the experimental setup. To make sure that participants understood the purported workings of the app, their first task was to test the readability of the following note: “This is a free application being developed by university researchers. It can automatically tag users or users’ friends with high accuracy. Should the app make a mistake, users can still remove the tags.” A short survey asked a number of comprehension questions about this note. Participants who answered these questions incorrectly had to read the note and answer the questions again. This procedure ensured that all participants clearly understood the context of the application. Participants then entered the “training” phase of the application, in which they were asked to tag the people in four researcher-provided photos based on a key with the faces of individuals in the photo. This task was purportedly the main task for participants as it serves the cover story (i.e., training the application). Figure 3 shows the first training page. After training the application, participants started the “correction” phase of the study. In this phase, the app would display photos that were ostensibly tagged by the algorithm asking participants to correct any mistakes in the tags. All the photos were pre-tagged correctly so that participants do not have to make any corrections. The goal of the “correction” phase was to demonstrate the high accuracy of the tagging algorithm, thereby countering any potential fears about the possibility of the algorithm tagging users incorrectly. Training and correction phases were parts of the cover story, as the app told participants their main task would be training the algorithm. Participants did not know that the main task is their tagging decision. After this general training phase, the app provided participants with a scenario where they had to make a privacy decision (tag or not) relevant to each of their friends’ names they listed before, where it measured the disclosure decision. 4.2 Dependent Variables: Tagging Decisions and Privacy Concerns Participants finally entered the “decision” phase, where they were given a chance to use the tagging feature for themselves. In this stage, the app thanked participants for training the algorithm and, as a token of appreciation, offered them a chance to use the app for their own photos. The experimental manipulations in terms of default, framing, and justification messages (see “Manipulations” below) were applied here as between subjects manipulations. In a prequestionnaire, a survey asked participants to enter the names of three Facebook friends that they regularly interact with; in the decision phase the app showed participants a decision page for each of these three friends. The decision page would claim that the algorithm had “identified” a) a number of previously unseen photos of the user on the friend’s page, and b) a number of previously unseen photos of the friend on the user’s page (in reality, the number of “identified” photos was a random number between five and fifteen). Participants were offered the choice to tag themselves, as well as the choice to tag their friend in these photos (see Figure 4). This resulted in six decisions (two tagging decisions for each of the three friends) per participant. The results of a pilot study suggest that these six decisions hold credible ecological validity. In the pilot study, the disclosure scenario was more intrusive; instead of providing the tagging option only for three listed friends, the app inquired participants if they want to tag all of their friends in all of their own photos and tag themselves in all of their friends’ photos. Out of 50 participants, no one agreed to use the tagging feature. Everyone rejecting the tagging across different framing, defaults, and justification manipulations means that participants perceived the app as real. After this pilot, the app designers adopted a less intrusive scenario to proceed with their study. Privacy concerns is the second dependent variable of our interest. The dataset includes a reduced version of the IUIPC [48] dimension of general concerns with 3 items. This reduced version is validated and used in the previous studies [40]. We used the sum score of this scale for measuring privacy concerns (Cronbach’s α = 0.790). All the items were measured on a 5-point agreeableness Likert scale: – Compared to others, I am more sensitive about the way online companies handle my personal information. – To me, it is the most important thing to keep my privacy intact from online companies. – I am concerned about threats to my personal privacy today. We standardized the scale (grand mean = 0, SD = 1) in our analyses. 4.3 Independent Variables: Manipulations Similar to most existing studies on framing and default effects, this experiment combined a default manipulation (accept vs. reject) with a framing manipulation (positive vs. negative). Table 1 shows this 2x2 design. In addition to framing and defaults, the app involves a justification manipulation which adds a “justification message” to the decision scenario. Literature studies two common types of justification messages: normative [27] and rationale-based [66] justifications. For the sake of robustness, the experiment includes both types of justifications, each with both a positive and a negative valence. Therefore, the justifications manipulation consists of two normative justifications (positive—showing high popularity for the app, and negative—showing low popularity for the app), two rationale-based justifications (positive—discussing pros of using the app, and negative—discussing cons of using the app), and a condition without any justification (as a neutral baseline): Note: 3% of our study participants use the tagging feature. – Negative descriptive normative justification: Note: 97% of our study participants use the tagging feature. – Positive descriptive normative justification: Note: Autotagged photos will show up on the Facebook walls of the tagged friends, where their friends can see them. Beware that they may not want others (parents, boss) to see some of these photos, because they could be embarrassing! – Negative rationale-based justification: Note: Autotagged photos will show up on the Facebook walls of the tagged friends, where their friends can see them. This will strengthen your friendship and let your friends relive the good times they had with you! – Positive rationale-based justification: No justification given. (This condition was treated as a baseline control for the model) – None: All of the experimental manipulations were between subjects. An example condition is shown in Figure 4. 4.4 Participant Recruitment This study was approved by an institutional review board. After excluding those who failed an attentioncheck question, we were left with 44 older adults and 169 young adults. These participants were recruited through MTurk and Figure-eight crowd-sourcing platforms. There were not significant demographic differences between the participants across these platforms. Each participant received $1.30 (U.S. Dollars) as their participation incentive. The app required participants to have an active Facebook account with at least ten friends to participate in the study. Participants were debriefed after the study and were informed that the app was not real and that it did not actually tag any of their or their friends’ photos. As is customary in studies that involve deception, they were given the option to be removed from the data without influencing their incentives. No participants chose to do so. 4.5 Data Analysis Approach Our first dependant variable (decision) was a binary variable with “accept to tag” coded as 1 and “reject to tag” coded as 0. Each participant responded to six disclosure scenarios: three scenarios on whether they wanted to tag themselves in each of their three friends’ photos and three scenarios on whether they wanted to tag each of their three friends in their own photos. Therefore, we constructed a multilevel path model with a random intercept to account for repeated measures per participant and a binary dependent variable. Our path model enabled us to treat privacy concerns as both an independent variable (by regressing tagging decision on it) and a dependent variable (by regressing it on study manipulations). The framing and default manipulations were dummy-coded where positive framing or opt-out defaults were coded as “0.5” and negative framing or opt-in defaults were coded as “−0.5”. To analyze justification messages, we first conducted an overall chi-square omnibus test to study their overall effect among the 5 conditions. Then we ran planned contrasts, including a contrast testing the effect of justification valence (positive justifications vs. negative justifications) to study H4 and H7. The other contrasts tested the effect of any justification (no vs. any), the effect of the type of justification (rationale-based vs. normative), and the interaction between justification type and valence). Our analyses were carried out in Mplus v7.4. As the sample was imbalanced (44 older adults and 169 young adults), we used MLR, a maximum likelihood estimation with robust standard errors in our analyses [59]. Captain America and a few other heroes were extremely against this while Iron Man and his side were in favor. The two sides can’t see eye-to-eye and clash in epic fashion. 2. Doctor Strange (2016) After an accident leaves him with shaky hands, Doctor Stephen Strange’s days as a surgeon are over forever. However, what happens next no one could expect as Strange then begins his journey to be a sorcerer. First, he only does so for selfish reasons. But the more time he spends training, the more he realizes that he wasn’t meant to be a rich and selfish surgeon; he was meant to be the Sorcerer Supreme. In simpler terms, he was destined to be a superhero. 3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) Jumping from the mystical side of the MCU to the cosmic one, everyone’s favorite rag-tag team of mischiefs returns for a second adventure. In the first movie, it’s heavily implied that Peter’s father is an important figure and somebody we’ll one day get to see. Well, in Vol. 2, we finally meet the mysterious man. And nothing is ever the same for the Guardians of the Galaxy. But beyond that, we get to meet the interesting Mantis, flesh out more of Gamora and Nebula’s relationship, and get to know another side of Rocket. 4. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) It was a long time coming, but it finally happened. One of the most popular superhero characters of all time finally got his own movie in the MCU. After making his debut in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man goes back to living a “regular” life as a teenager in Brooklyn. As regular as can be when you’re a superhero that is. But he quickly realizes that he won’t just be nabbing purse snatchers and petty thieves. He’ll have to deal with his own supervillain in the form of the Vulture. Even though he’s already gone toe-to-toe with some of the Avengers, this may be his biggest challenge yet. 5. Thor: Ragnarok (2017) Although this was the third movie for Thor, it felt like a fresh beginning. This version of Thor was more silly and comedic, and although future installments played too much into this, he was perfect in Thor: Ragnarok. In fact, everything about this movie is amazing. After their sister returns, Thor and his brother Loki find themselves in a strange new world that they can’t seem to escape of. That doesn’t matter though because they need to figure out a plan quickly before their sister destroys all of Asgard. Luck is on their side, however, as two allies are also stranded on the strange planet. Together, the 4 of them do everything they can to stop Hela. 6. Avengers: Infinity War (2018) Since his small teaser at the end of the first Avengers movie, Thanos had been built up as the final boss of the Avengers. A bigger threat than they could ever dream of. And in Infinity War, we find out if they’re up to the task. Still reeling from the prior events of Civil War, the Avengers (alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy) fight the Mad Titan before he can reclaim all of the Infinity Stones. Because it’s just not Earth that is being threatened but the entire universe. 7. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) While the Avengers are fighting for their lives, Ant-Man and the Wasp have their own mini (ha) adventure in San Francisco. The Wasp’s mom, Janet van Dyne, is stuck in the Quantum Realm after she shrunk too small. Decades later, Ant-Man and the Wasp believe they have the power and know-how to bring her back. Unfortunately, it won’t be an easy journey. Along the way, they’ll have to deal with both Sonny Burch and Ghost, 2 opponents who have their own agendas. 8. Captain Marvel (2019) Captain Marvel was released toward the tail-end of Phase 3, but it actually takes place before most of the other movies in the MCU. It follows a mysterious Kree soldier who suffers from memory loss. As more of her memories get uncovered, she has to ask herself, “Who can she trust?”  This question itself opens up doors and reveals secrets she never thought possible and allows her to become Captain Marvel. 9. Avengers: Endgame (2019) This was it. The culmination of the 21 movies that came before it. The Avengers once again have to come together and join forces to fight Thanos for a second and hopefully final time. But a lot has changed since they last encountered him, and many of the Avengers have changed (some for better and some for worse). None of that matters, however, because the stakes are higher than ever, and only the Avengers can make everything right. Although there was one more movie in Phase 3, Avengers: Endgame seemed to be a fitting conclusion to the saga. 10. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) Even though Peter Parker isn’t finished with high school, he’s had enough adventure and excitement for a lifetime. But the hits keep on coming for Spidey. On a school trip to Europe, he’ll come across other superpowered beings such as the Elementals and Mysterio who will turn his life upside down. And if that wasn’t enough, he still has to deal with being a teenager: getting bullied, having girl problems, and having a love-sick best friend. My name is Daria Leshchenko; I am the CEO and Managing Partner at SupportYourApp — a Support-as-a-Service company that provides technical and customer support to global startups and businesses. I am also a co-founder of our two spinoff companies — Label Your Data — which deals with data labeling for AI and ML, and Outstaff Your Team, which takes care of the outstaffing services for global tech businesses. In whatever time I can spare, I love doing sports (squash, for example, is my latest activity of choice), studying (management, coaching, latest technologies — whatever it is, I’m in), and traveling. For example, I have just returned from Lisbon, where I attended this year’s Web Summit. Interesting! What was your latest Hackernoon Top story about? The latest one that made it to the HackerNoon TOP list was “Founders, Do You Have a Plan for the End of the World?”. My team and I kept on working and developing through COVID-19, lockdowns, and every other crisis global businesses faced over the last decade. In the article, I wanted to share my thoughts and experiences on withstanding even the biggest shakes and turmoils. I think it is especially important now when the world around us is so unstable and uncertain. Do you usually write on similar topics? If not, what do you usually write about? I usually write about the challenges that I have as a founder, mistakes I have made earlier in my career, advice I would love to share with others, and so on. Something that is near and dear to my heart. I believe this is the best approach for any writer. Great! What is your usual writing routine like (if you have one?) As soon as I narrow the topic down, I just start writing and perfecting the text to make sure it is as engaging as it can be. I also make it as short as I can because I like to be on point and precise. Why waste time writing 10 words, when a thought can be expressed in 5? This is my golden rule of writing. Being a writer in tech can be a challenge. It’s not often our main role, but an addition to another one. What is the biggest challenge you have when it comes to writing? I would say time is my biggest constraint. Writing helps me structure my thoughts and experiences. Almost relive it. And I hope every piece I write helps someone make the correct decision or find the right solutions. As every top-tier and C-suite manager knows, our schedules can get quite hectic, so time is a crucial factor in our ability to share our knowledge with our peers and teams. What is the next thing you hope to achieve in your career? The next step for SupportYourApp and me (because, in my mind, we are inseparable) is implementing more AI solutions into our support services. We also keep on adding more value to our core services and offering complex solutions. The progress we are seeing now is not going to slow down, so it is important for businesses and leaders to not follow it, but actually get ahead of it. I would love to concentrate my attention on creating an ecosystem that will unite people and technology. That is something we have already been doing, but as time and progress go by, I think we need to dive deeper and deeper into the process. The business world sees a slowdown, so I would like to keep the pace up even despite the economic crisis the world is facing right now. I want us to keep on growing despite it all. Wow, that’s admirable. Now, something more casual: What is your guilty pleasure of choice? Interesting question. Now that I think about it, if something brings me pleasure, I do not feel guilty about it. It is as simple as that. So, I guess I can say I don’t have one. Do you have a non-tech-related hobby? If yes, what is it? Sports and reading. These are something my team and I share — a lot of us love running, doing yoga, and generally taking care of ourselves. Only in 2023, we took part in two races in our hometown of Kyiv and our Colombian team took part in the Intercontinental Cali 10K De La Luz run. I run and play squash. It keeps my head clear and relaxes me. As for reading — my team and I are on our 11th book of the year right now. In 2023, we tackled books like The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro (which is my favorite this year) and Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update by Donella H. Lets Teleport Benjamin Franklin Around Using Vue JS

I dream of hiking from Munich to Venice and trekking across the beautiful Alps. But as I still have to live my everyday life, my journey has to consist of multiple stages, with weeks, months, or even years between each adventure. That is okay, as it’s more about the journey than the destination. However, I always wanted a way to visually retrace these paths, to see how far I’ve come and how close I am to my goal. I wanted a way to celebrate the progress I’ve made and to motivate myself to take the journey further. Fortunately, many outdoor and sports apps, like Adidas Running, Komoot, Strava, and others, graciously allow us to export our activities as GPX files. However, there’s nowhere to go with those GPX files. That is where and come into play. I recently stumbled upon Folium, a powerful Python library for creating interactive maps. It can easily incorporate geographic data, such as the GPX files, and allows for customization and exploration. Drawing upon the wealth of GPS data I’ve gathered, I started experimenting with Folium to craft a map that brings my outdoor excursions to life. Python Folium After some research and a lot of testing, I came up with that allows me to revisit my past outdoor activities: a map So, if you are anything like me and have a treasure trove of GPS data without any purpose, you may wonder how I got there. So, in this article, I will explain how to breathe life into your GPX files. Let’s embark on an expedition of exploration and mapping! Getting Started with Jupyter Notebook To begin this adventure, we’ll be using Jupyter Notebook. Why Jupyter Notebook? It’s a fantastic interactive computing environment that allows us to combine code, visualizations, and text, making it perfect for experimenting with our data and the Folium library. If you haven’t installed Jupyter Notebook yet, follow the instructions on their . Once installed, you can create a new Jupyter Notebook and get ready for your journey. official website Parsing GPX Files for Trail Data Next, we need the raw material for our map — the GPX files. is a widely used file format that stores location data, such as latitude, longitude, elevation, and time, making it ideal for tracking outdoor activities. GPX (GPS Exchange Format) If you’re an avid hiker, runner, cyclist, or skier, chances are you already have tracked various excursions using an outdoor or sports app. Plenty of those apps allow you to export your activities in GPX format. So gather those GPX files, and let’s get started! In our , we’ll use the gpxpy library to parse the GPX files and extract the essential trail data, such as latitude, longitude, elevation, speed, and distance. map We’ll use Foliums FeatureGroup concepts to group the trails based on their group name. That will allow us to show and hide certain activity groups later. Now, we’ll iterate through our parsed data and plot each trail on the map using Folium’s PolyLine and Marker objects. The PolyLine will represent the actual trail, while the Marker will act as a starting point for each activity. When you click on a marker, a popup will display relevant information about the corresponding trail. The DeFi ecosystem, which many hoped to shake the centralized traditional systems, caused many to become disillusioned in this direction. But is this disappointment justified? Despite this, many companies are actively developing DeFi tools, where the influence of the owners will be distributed by smart contracts. In my new interview, we'll chat with Flex co-founder Mark Feldman and learn more about Flex's decentralized cross-chain order book exchange. About FLEX: is a decentralized exchange with a limit order book, low latency, and guaranteed trade execution. It provides the same trading experience as Binance but implements an on-chain order book using distributed smart contracts and DeBots. FLEX Can you explain the concept of decentralization and how FLEX implements it in its exchange platform? Since FLEX is built on Everscale, it inherits all of its spectacular properties including decentralization. Everscale can afford a very large number of validator nodes even on a single shard level because it doesn’t get slower when more nodes are added as opposed to say BSC which is nothing more than a centralized version of Ethereum. To understand how Everscale does it, please read more about Everscale’s solution to a blockchain trilemma. The FLEX order book is a decentralized fully on-chain limit order book, and what it means is that each order is placed into a blockchain, and each trading client deals directly with the blockchain when executing an order. Even DEXes like Serum in reality have a centralized trading engine where all orders go into a queue and are processed sequentially which has nothing to do with centralization. Flex tech is truly unique and unmatched by nobody at this point. Could you highlight the key features that differentiate FLEX from other DEX's and platforms? Why users should switch current platforms for FLEX? To summarize the above, we can say that Flex is an ideal DEX because: It has an order book that can match the performance of literally any centralized exchange. Front running is impossible in Everscale. It’s decentralized beyond and above any DEX which doesn’t even come close to its speed. Its tech allows for security higher than bitcoin which has been mathematically proven. So Flex is very fast, very secure, and very reliable doing all of that fully on chain.  Flex is a Lamborgini compared to Toyota Prius which is what many recent DEXes on Ethereum are. Take DYDX for example. They have tried to use polygon which as you know is Ethereum layer 2 and got frustrated with that. Now, they are building their own blockchain because they have hit the dead-end with Ethereum-based tech. Other projects are building fast on-chain order books on layer 3! But these trades need to be settled eventually on Ethereum itself. This is like putting a supersonic jet into a container placed on a locomotive operated by a steam engine. What is the team behind FLEX? Can you tell us more about their experience? The tech team includes former math and programming championships winners while the business team includes former investment bankers and traders with decades of international experience. How does Flex address security concerns associated with decentralized exchanges and ensure the safety of user funds? Flex smart contracts are formally verified which is a process far superior to any typical security audit done by other exchanges. Like mentioned above, Everscale, in general, is far more secure compared to most blockchains, and Flex enjoys that as well. In terms of the actual storage of user funds, they are stored in cold wallets where users and users only control the keys. Are there any plans to introduce new features or improvements to the platform in the near future? Like the web version, lower gas expenses, etc.? A web version is already live. The web version of Flex GUI is currently available on and supports the Surf Wallet extension. We plan to support more wallets in the Web version. It is a requirement from Venom to support Venom Wallet to be deployed in the Venom testnet. trade.flexdex.fi We developed a new contract for Market Makers to minimize gas consumption on updating orders when following the Oracle price. It will be available in production after the next update of the DEX contracts. The following steps will likely be about some kind of bridge to other networks to broaden the user base and to add the most popular tokens to the traded pairs. It will also allow the addition of trusted stablecoins, which is a prerequisite for the margin trading and implementation of derivatives trading. This will position Flex as a multi-chain DEX with an Everscale backend. Are there any specific user requirements or prerequisites to start trading on Flex? What do they need to know before they start using your platform? All you need is an Ever Surf wallet and some funds in it in order to trade. If you don’t have any funds on Everscale, you can use Octus Bridge to transfer your crypto from one of the most popular layer 1s. Any current DEX user can figure it out. In your documentation, it was indicated about the role of DeBots. What is it? Can you elaborate on the role of DeBots in the Flex ecosystem? Have your plans changed to add this? DeBots is a middle-ware technology, which facilitates interaction of dApps with on-chain contracts. It can work without a specialized API for each dApp, as all the business logic can be implemented in a DeBot, which uses a general GraphQL API. Moreover, a simple dApp can be implemented as a DeBot without any front-end development and accessed via a public DeBot browser, e.g., Surf DeBot browser, which has the chat interface. Running DeBots in the Surf DeBot Browser has a major advantage in that it allows developers to implement their own business logic without any actions on the side of the Surf team and securely use the Surf Owner keys to sign transactions in dApps. The main disadvantage of the Surf DeBot Browser is that it's limited to the chat interface. At the same time, we want to pay attention that the DeBot technology is not equal to the chat interface. dApp developers may use DeBots within GUI as well. Historically, the official Flex GUI was developed with the DeBots under the hood, and Flex API & Flex SDK were added later to the Evercloud so that other developers could easily write bots and dApps to trade with DEX contracts. Currently, we still use DeBots in Flex GUI in such important flows as authorization and trading because it allows us to add new features and improvements much faster than they can be supported in the Flex API & SDK in Evercloud. Examples: In the desktop version of Flex GUI, we implemented Auth flow with delegation of funds, where the Flex Trader has different keys from the Wallet Owner keys. The Wallet Owner authorizes the Flex Trader and delegates his funds in the chat interface of the Surf DeBot Browser. This is an example of the Auth DeBot implemented in the chat interface for signing transactions with the Wallet Owner keys. In the web version of Flex GUI, there is no delegation of funds. The Flex Trader and the Wallet Owner are one person, and the Auth flow is much simpler as the Owner keys are stored in the Wallet extension and used for signing ALL transactions in Flex GUI. It is an example of the Auth DeBot implemented within GUI without referring to the chat interface. When users make orders in Flex GUI, they use the Trade DeBot under the hood even if they know nothing about it. It is also an example of using DeBots within GUI, both in the Desktop and Web versions. Could you tell us about your vision of DeFi? In your opinion, what is needed for the attitude towards it to change and justify the expectations placed on it? I’m absolutely convinced that it will be DeFi that will change the entire world forever both politically and economically. No army in the world and no government agency can effectively deal with decentralized finance which does not and will not comply with its agenda. Not even a very successful concerted CBDC effort even by a large group of countries can change this. Decentralization will eventually declare a crushing victory. DeFi will be at the forefront of all news in the coming years and it will be very interesting to watch. This future was predicted in the book which essentially invented crypto written in 1997, and I recommend it to everybody. It’s called “The Sovereign Individual.'' DeFi needs to be integrated with a real economy. We are working on it, and many people are working on it. Governments are working on it too. When we will see an oil trade done on a DEX and settled on a public blockchain this will mark the beginning of a new era. This will happen soon, very soon, much sooner than most people think. The old system will create a lot of damage when it collapses. There will be more wars and conflicts, but none of it will change the future in which DeFi technology will win. Do you support bridges with other blockchains like cross-chain DEX? I already mentioned Octus Bridge which will soon be integrated into Flex. With regards to cross-chain DEX, we have thought about it from the very beginning. This is in the works but I can’t say when it will be implemented right now. Do you have any plans to be integrated with Venom/TON or other blockchains? The answer is yes, and both are in the process. What are your plans for attracting liquidity on the FLEX platform? Liquidity on Flex depends very heavily on liquidity on Everscale, which in turn, depends on liquidity on all integrated and interconnected TVM layer 1s like Venom/TON/Gosh, etc. At the same time, we are working on attracting retail users pretty much like other DEXes do. The third line of attack on this is real-world, real economy-related use cases. We are working in different directions on this. One example is a dequity project that aims to tokenize Miami residential real estate. Other efforts include trading metals and even oil, but I can’t talk about these a lot until they become official. And we will get it done because now is the best time for it. What do you think about the future of the DeFi ecosystem? Will it down or go up? Up without a question, but it will relive many evolutions and incarnations going forward. What would you like to tell our readers? I’d like to end this interview by reiterating that we believe that Flex is the most important technology to change the financial system forever. CEXes can be controlled, their CEO can be thrown in jail, servers arrested, fiat rails closed, and so on. When it comes to DEXes nothing really can be done. Especially because real businesses all around the world are moving to accepting crypto. Crypto fiat rails soon will be a thing of the past. And of course, we are very excited to be part of that. We are not crypto-anarchists, and we are not against working with governments. I'm just saying that the technology that we have developed is truly transformational and should not be underestimated. Not everybody understands this today, but as time goes by, more and more people will. A SCRAP OF CURIOUS HISTORY here A SCRAP OF CURIOUS HISTORY Marion City, on the Mississippi River, in the State of Missouri—a village; time, 1845. La Bourboule-les-Bains, France—a village; time, the end of June, 1894. I was in the one village in that early time; I am in the other now. These times and places are sufficiently wide apart, yet today I have the strange sense of being thrust back into that Missourian village and of reliving certain stirring days that I lived there so long ago. Last Saturday night the life of the President of the French Republic was taken by an Italian assassin. Last night a mob surrounded our hotel, shouting, howling, singing the “Marseillaise,” and pelting our windows with sticks and stones; for we have Italian waiters, and the mob demanded that they be turned out of the house instantly—to be drubbed, and then driven out of the village. Everybody in the hotel remained up until far into the night, and experienced the several kinds of terror which one reads about in books which tell of night attacks by Italians and by French mobs: the growing roar of the oncoming crowd; the arrival, with rain of stones and a crash of glass; the withdrawal to rearrange plans—followed by a silence ominous, threatening, and harder to bear than even the active siege and the noise. The landlord and the two village policemen stood their ground, and at last the mob was persuaded to go away and leave our Italians in peace. Today four of the ringleaders have been sentenced to heavy punishment of a public sort—and are become local heroes, by consequence. That is the very mistake which was at first made in the Missourian village half a century ago. The mistake was repeated and repeated—just as France is doing in these latter months. In our village we had our Ravochals, our Henrys, our Vaillants; and in a humble way our Cesario—I hope I have spelled this name wrong. Fifty years ago we passed through, in all essentials, what France has been passing through during the past two or three years, in the matter of periodical frights, horrors, and shudderings. In several details the parallels are quaintly exact. In that day, for a man to speak out openly and proclaim himself an enemy of negro slavery was simply to proclaim himself a madman. For he was blaspheming against the holiest thing known to a Missourian, and could NOT be in his right mind. For a man to proclaim himself an anarchist in France, three years ago, was to proclaim himself a madman—he could not be in his right mind. Now the original old first blasphemer against any institution profoundly venerated by a community is quite sure to be in earnest; his followers and imitators may be humbugs and self-seekers, but he himself is sincere—his heart is in his protest. Robert Hardy was our first —awful name! He was a journeyman cooper, and worked in the big cooper-shop belonging to the great pork-packing establishment which was Marion City’s chief pride and sole source of prosperity. He was a New-Englander, a stranger. And, being a stranger, he was of course regarded as an inferior person—for that has been human nature from Adam down—and of course, also, he was made to feel unwelcome, for this is the ancient law with man and the other animals. Hardy was thirty years old, and a bachelor; pale, given to reverie and reading. He was reserved, and seemed to prefer the isolation which had fallen to his lot. He was treated to many side remarks by his fellows, but as he did not resent them it was decided that he was a coward. abolitionist All of a sudden he proclaimed himself an abolitionist—straight out and publicly! He said that negro slavery was a crime, an infamy. For a moment the town was paralyzed with astonishment; then it broke into a fury of rage and swarmed toward the cooper-shop to lynch Hardy. But the Methodist minister made a powerful speech to them and stayed their hands. He proved to them that Hardy was insane and not responsible for his words; that no man be sane and utter such words. could So Hardy was saved. Being insane, he was allowed to go on talking. He was found to be good entertainment. Several nights running he made abolition speeches in the open air, and all the town flocked to hear and laugh. He implored them to believe him sane and sincere, and have pity on the poor slaves, and take measures for the restoration of their stolen rights, or in no long time blood would flow—blood, blood, rivers of blood! It was great fun. But all of a sudden the aspect of things changed. A slave came flying from Palmyra, the county-seat, a few miles back, and was about to escape in a canoe to Illinois and freedom in the dull twilight of the approaching dawn, when the town constable seized him. Hardy happened along and tried to rescue the negro; there was a struggle, and the constable did not come out of it alive. Hardy crossed the river with the negro, and then came back to give himself up. All this took time, for the Mississippi is not a French brook, like the Seine, the Loire, and those other rivulets, but is a real river nearly a mile wide. The town was on hand in force by now, but the Methodist preacher and the sheriff had already made arrangements in the interest of order; so Hardy was surrounded by a strong guard and safely conveyed to the village calaboose in spite of all the effort of the mob to get hold of him. The reader will have begun to perceive that this Methodist minister was a prompt man; a prompt man, with active hands and a good headpiece. Williams was his name—Damon Williams; Damon Williams in public, Damnation Williams in private, because he was so powerful on that theme and so frequent. The excitement was prodigious. The constable was the first man who had ever been killed in the town. The event was by long odds the most imposing in the town’s history. It lifted the humble village into sudden importance; its name was in everybody’s mouth for twenty miles around. And so was the name of Robert Hardy—Robert Hardy, the stranger, the despised. In a day he was become the person of most consequence in the region, the only person talked about. As to those other coopers, they found their position curiously changed—they were important people, or unimportant, now, in proportion as to how large or how small had been their intercourse with the new celebrity. The two or three who had really been on a sort of familiar footing with him found themselves objects of admiring interest with the public and of envy with their shopmates. The village weekly journal had lately gone into new hands. The new man was an enterprising fellow, and he made the most of the tragedy. He issued an extra. Then he put up posters promising to devote his whole paper to matters connected with the great event—there would be a full and intensely interesting biography of the murderer, and even a portrait of him. He was as good as his word. He carved the portrait himself, on the back of a wooden type—and a terror it was to look at. It made a great commotion, for this was the first time the village paper had ever contained a picture. The village was very proud. The output of the paper was ten times as great as it had ever been before, yet every copy was sold. When the trial came on, people came from all the farms around, and from Hannibal, and Quincy, and even from Keokuk; and the court-house could hold only a fraction of the crowd that applied for admission. The trial was published in the village paper, with fresh and still more trying pictures of the accused. Hardy was convicted, and hanged—a mistake. People came from miles around to see the hanging; they brought cakes and cider, also the women and children, and made a picnic of the matter. It was the largest crowd the village had ever seen. The rope that hanged Hardy was eagerly bought up, in inch samples, for everybody wanted a memento of the memorable event. Martyrdom gilded with notoriety has its fascinations. Within one week afterward four young lightweights in the village proclaimed themselves abolitionists! In life Hardy had not been able to make a convert; everybody laughed at him; but nobody could laugh at his legacy. The four swaggered around with their slouch-hats pulled down over their faces, and hinted darkly at awful possibilities. The people were troubled and afraid, and showed it. And they were stunned, too; they could not understand it. “Abolitionist” had always been a term of shame and horror; yet here were four young men who were not only not ashamed to bear that name, but were grimly proud of it. Respectable young men they were, too—of good families, and brought up in the church. Ed Smith, the printer’s apprentice, nineteen, had been the head Sunday-school boy, and had once recited three thousand Bible verses without making a break. Dick Savage, twenty, the baker’s apprentice; Will Joyce, twenty-two, journeyman blacksmith; and Henry Taylor, twenty-four, tobacco-stemmer—were the other three. They were all of a sentimental cast; they were all romance-readers; they all wrote poetry, such as it was; they were all vain and foolish; but they had never before been suspected of having anything bad in them. They withdrew from society, and grew more and more mysterious and dreadful. They presently achieved the distinction of being denounced by names from the pulpit—which made an immense stir! This was grandeur, this was fame. They were envied by all the other young fellows now. This was natural. Their company grew—grew alarmingly. They took a name. It was a secret name, and was divulged to no outsider; publicly they were simply the abolitionists. They had pass-words, grips, and signs; they had secret meetings; their initiations were conducted with gloomy pomps and ceremonies, at midnight. They always spoke of Hardy as “the Martyr,” and every little while they moved through the principal street in procession—at midnight, black-robed, masked, to the measured tap of the solemn drum—on pilgrimage to the Martyr’s grave, where they went through with some majestic fooleries and swore vengeance upon his murderers. They gave previous notice of the pilgrimage by small posters, and warned everybody to keep indoors and darken all houses along the route, and leave the road empty. These warnings were obeyed, for there was a skull and crossbones at the top of the poster. When this kind of thing had been going on about eight weeks, a quite natural thing happened. A few men of character and grit woke up out of the nightmare of fear which had been stupefying their faculties, and began to discharge scorn and scoffings at themselves and the community for enduring this child’s-play; and at the same time they proposed to end it straightway. Everybody felt an uplift; life was breathed into their dead spirits; their courage rose and they began to feel like men again. This was on a Saturday. All day the new feeling grew and strengthened; it grew with a rush; it brought inspiration and cheer with it. Midnight saw a united community, full of zeal and pluck, and with a clearly defined and welcome piece of work in front of it. The best organizer and strongest and bitterest talker on that great Saturday was the Presbyterian clergyman who had denounced the original four from his pulpit—Rev. Hiram Fletcher—and he promised to use his pulpit in the public interest again now. On the morrow he had revelations to make, he said—secrets of the dreadful society. But the revelations were never made. At half past two in the morning the dead silence of the village was broken by a crashing explosion, and the town patrol saw the preacher’s house spring in a wreck of whirling fragments into the sky. The preacher was killed, together with a negro woman, his only slave and servant. The town was paralyzed again, and with reason. To struggle against a visible enemy is a thing worth while, and there is a plenty of men who stand always ready to undertake it; but to struggle against an invisible one—an invisible one who sneaks in and does his awful work in the dark and leaves no trace—that is another matter. That is a thing to make the bravest tremble and hold back. The cowed populace were afraid to go to the funeral. The man who was to have had a packed church to hear him expose and denounce the common enemy had but a handful to see him buried. The coroner’s jury had brought in a verdict of “death by the visitation of God,” for no witness came forward; if any existed they prudently kept out of the way. Nobody seemed sorry. Nobody wanted to see the terrible secret society provoked into the commission of further outrages. Everybody wanted the tragedy hushed up, ignored, forgotten, if possible. And so there was a bitter surprise and an unwelcome one when Will Joyce, the blacksmith’s journeyman, came out and proclaimed himself the assassin! Plainly he was not minded to be robbed of his glory. He made his proclamation, and stuck to it. Stuck to it, and insisted upon a trial. Here was an ominous thing; here was a new and peculiarly formidable terror, for a motive was revealed here which society could not hope to deal with successfully— , thirst for notoriety. If men were going to kill for notoriety’s sake, and to win the glory of newspaper renown, a big trial, and a showy execution, what possible invention of man could discourage or deter them? The town was in a sort of panic; it did not know what to do. vanity However, the grand jury had to take hold of the matter—it had no choice. It brought in a true bill, and presently the case went to the county court. The trial was a fine sensation. The prisoner was the principal witness for the prosecution. He gave a full account of the assassination; he furnished even the minutest particulars: how he deposited his keg of powder and laid his train—from the house to such-and-such a spot; how George Ronalds and Henry Hart came along just then, smoking, and he borrowed Hart’s cigar and fired the train with it, shouting, “Down with all slave-tyrants!” and how Hart and Ronalds made no effort to capture him, but ran away, and had never come forward to testify yet. But they had to testify now, and they did—and pitiful it was to see how reluctant they were, and how scared. The crowded house listened to Joyce’s fearful tale with a profound and breathless interest, and in a deep hush which was not broken till he broke it himself, in concluding, with a roaring repetition of his “Death to all slave-tyrants!”—which came so unexpectedly and so startlingly that it made everyone present catch his breath and gasp. The trial was put in the paper, with biography and large portrait, with other slanderous and insane pictures, and the edition sold beyond imagination. The execution of Joyce was a fine and picturesque thing. It drew a vast crowd. Good places in trees and seats on rail fences sold for half a dollar apiece; lemonade and gingerbread-stands had great prosperity. Joyce recited a furious and fantastic and denunciatory speech on the scaffold which had imposing passages of school-boy eloquence in it, and gave him a reputation on the spot as an orator, and his name, later, in the society’s records, of the “Martyr Orator.” He went to his death breathing slaughter and charging his society to “avenge his murder.” If he knew anything of human nature he knew that to plenty of young fellows present in that great crowd he was a grand hero—and enviably situated. He was hanged. It was a mistake. Within a month from his death the society which he had honored had twenty new members, some of them earnest, determined men. They did not court distinction in the same way, but they celebrated his martyrdom. The crime which had been obscure and despised had become lofty and glorified. Such things were happening all over the country. Wild-brained martyrdom was succeeded by uprising and organization. Then, in natural order, followed riot, insurrection, and the wrack and restitutions of war. It was bound to come, and it would naturally come in that way.
