The year 2017 will probably go down as the year home automation finally went mainstream. Each time I walk into our local Best Buy, numerous people are standing around the home automation section, and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. The first thing you will learn about home automation is there is a lot to learn, but, you can still have much fun upgrading your home. This past year I spent much time researching and updating our house to make our life easier. I started small, and every month I added something. If you are looking to get started in home automation, or maybe just a gift for that geeky family member this holiday season, this article will help you get started and give you some ideas. Start With Your Network Home automation does not work without having a vast home network. It all starts from there. Think of your home network as the foundation for home automation. You need one that will: cover your entire home allow for many devices to be connected will enable you to grow and expand for the future The best upgrade I did for my house this year is replaced my aging Asus WiFI router with a new type of wireless network called a “ .” A mesh network auto configures and routes traffic as needed and can even select the best protocol for each device. Also, they are easily extendable. Need more space upstairs? Add a new mesh point. mesh network I went with the pictured above. It comes with the router (the white box) and two mesh points. The mesh points plug directly into the wall, and so they can be located throughout the home to give you the best coverage. Need more coverage? Buy more mesh points. Unless you have a substantial home, this out-of-the-box system will provide you excellent coverage. I even have full WiFI signal strength out to our mailbox. Here is a sample setup. Amplifi HD (High Density) mesh router Sample home setup While I highly recommend Amplifi’s system for ease of use and simple setup, there are others you might want to consider the or . These would be the top three choices I would recommend. However, I love Amplifi’s built-in LED screen directly on the router. Their phone app puts the power of your network right in your hands and allows you to monitor usage, turn devices off (go to bed kids!), port forward, and even schedule times devices can use the Internet. Google Wifi Netgear Orbi Pick a Hub Now that we have a good foundation to get started with home automation we need to learn about hubs. These devices control the components you have installed (door locks, garage door opener, etc.). My suggestion is to start with a hub first, then buy one or two add-ons and gradually grow over time. Here is the downside to home automation: there isn’t a standard. Everyone is using different protocols. Let’s say you want to start simple with a light switch or replace your front door lock. The hub you choose needs to know how to control each component. This is where the hub comes in. To confuse matters even more, various manufacturers products only work with their hub like Phillip Hues, Lutron Caseta, etc. NOTE: You can choose Apple’s HomeKit as the protocol you are going to use. You can just use your phone to control your devices, and there is no hub required. However, if you want to automate things really (turn the lights outside on at 7:00 PM) then you still need an Apple TV or iPad to configure and control everything, There are three significant players today in the home automation space when it comes to hubs: , , and . At some point, you are probably going to want to own two out of the three of these. Samsung’s SmartThings and WINK are essentially direct competitors to each other. Each supports different protocols and will control various components. Each has an app that runs on your phone that allows you to setup and controls your devices. The constant need to check if your hub even endorses a device is where home automation starts to get a little tricky. Ultimately, the hub you select determines the various accessories you can acquire. Today, there is no getting around that. Samsung SmartThings WINK Logitech’s Harmony Hub That leaves us with Logitech’s Harmony Hub. Bear with me as this may get a little confusing. A lot of the things that SmartThings and WINK can control, so can Harmony Hub. However, primarily the strength of the Harmony Hub is its ties to multimedia devices, which SmartThings nor WINK can control. If you have many multimedia devices, chances are over the years you might have owned a or seen them in the stores. Now your iPhone (as pictured below) can control your multimedia components as well as additional items. Logitech Harmony remote iPhone Harmony Hub App As you can see from above, my setup gives me one app to control lots of devices. It can even read the devices from SmartThings or WINK and offer them up in one interface as well. If you are starting out with home automation, my recommendation is to get the Logitech Harmony Hub. Logitech also offers an extender hub that supports ZigBee®, Z-Wave™, and Z-Wave Plus compatible devices with your existing Harmony Hub. This will open up more items. However, the extender hub is expensive. For the same money or even less you can get a SmartThings hub and open a whole new world of devices you can acquire. When it comes to actual home automation though, SmartThings and WINK offer a lot more in regards to customizing events. Thus, why I said earlier, you will probably want to own two out of the three hubs eventually. Here is a screenshot of the types of things you can do with SmartThings automation. Of the two, it is the most robust. SmartThings App offers lots of customization to automate your home Of course, you can leverage (if this then that) with all three hubs. Things get cool when you start to leverage IFTTT. Imagine , and your lights come on at home because you are leaving work late for example. The possibilities begin to become endless. IFTTT sending a text message Confused yet? I know, this stuff can be when starting out. Let’s keep it simple though, get the Harmony Hub first because it can control more than just locks and sensors. It can control your home theater system as well. While not as robust at automating things as SmartThings or WINK, it is still a must-have in my book. Door Locks, Switches, and Sensors Once you have a hub picked out, it is time to purchase a few items for your home. I started with door locks and garage door opener. Mainly so I could let some friends in the house while I was out of town. Maybe you want to turn the lights on while you are away for security purposes. No matter the case, pick something easy you can install yourself that will add some immediate value. Door Locks Kwikset 910 For door locks, I chose the that was compatible with my SmartThings hub. It supports “Smart Key” technology which allows one to quickly re-key the lock with any Kwikset key. No need to call a locksmith ever again if you want to change the locks on your home. There are others available by and . All of them are easy to install and configure, and even integrate with devices like which we will cover later. Kwikset 910 Z-Wave Schlage Yale Amazon Echo Switches or Light Bulbs Lutron Switches Before you go out and buy the Phillip Hues light bulbs, please allow me to stop you before you head out the door. The absolute quickest and easiest thing to do is buy the Phillips light bulbs. However, don’t, unless you live in an apartment. They are a hack in my opinion and here’s why. If you put a Phillips Hue light bulb in your house and someone turns the switch off at the wall, guess what? You cannot turn the light back on. It defeats the whole purpose. Instead, replace your switches on the wall. Then you can control any light bulb or device connected to the switch and use any light bulbs you find on sale. The leader in switches, which also comes in a variety of colors to match your home, is . Lutron also sells blinds that will raise and lower. As we start to add things on, our automation can begin to get a little more sophisticated. Automation can be created like “Movie Night” which automatically lock all the doors and turn off the lights. Lutron Caseta Sensors There are multiple sensors to consider. Motion is probably one of the first ones most people think of when it comes to security. However, there are lots more these days. They include: motion sensors water sensors (great for water heaters) power sensors multipurpose sensors (doors, windows) weather stations soil moisture sensors (know when to water your flowers or get an alert) Of all the components, these are probably the cheapest if you are getting started on a budget. However, they are also some of the most useful when combined with automation in SmartThings or IFTTT. For example, have you ever done laundry and left the clothes in the washer or dryer? A power sensor can remind you the clothes in the machine are done and now need to go to the dryer. Alternatively, imagine you put a motion sensor in your bedroom. If you get up between the hours of midnight and 6:00 AM you can set your lights to automatically raise up 10% to light the way to the bathroom and then automatically turn off after you leave. Voice Control Amazon Echo I have mentioned “Alexa” earlier. The Echo is a device that has a speaker and gets its commands through voice interaction. I cannot even begin to cover all the things an Echo can do, but, when added to your home network, it can interact and control your smart home devices. It can also put things on your calendar, remember grocery items, and even set timers and alarms. Amazon’s Echo Some people are worried about privacy but I for one love the convenience factor the Echo provides. “Alexa, watch TV,” “Alexa, play XBox,” “Alexa, turn off Xbox” are just a few examples that are within your reach with a Logitech Harmony Hub and an Amazon Echo. Of course, there are other manufacturers like who are investing in the same technology. There are differences in the things each can do. In my experience, Google’s devices are smarter at random questions, but Amazon’s is more connected. Meaning I find the Echo to work with just about everything. Even Apple has entered the market with their . Echo’s start as low as $49 and there are always deals on them (buy three get one free) so it makes it easy to get started. Google HomePod Cameras (Indoor and Outdoor) and Security Security is a big concern with many, and we see many options in 2017. Wireless and cloud-based cameras are all the rage and to be honest none of them are perfect. They either cost too much to start with, cost too much monthly, or just don’t have all the features everyone wants. Here are a few options: (indoor/outdoor) Nest (indoor) Amazon’s CloudCam Logitech just released the new (indoor/outdoor) Circle 2.0 (indoor/outdoor) Arlo If you thought hubs were confusing, they are nothing compared to the endless options when it comes to cameras. Not only do you have to buy the hardware but then you have to figure out the cost of all the different plans. If you are serious about security, call a professional and have them install a fully monitored security system. There is no replacement today that I’d thoroughly trust other than a professionally installed system. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, then I would recommend the Arlo system. It is entirely wireless but offers a base station where a hard drive can store data locally. Their cameras are fully wireless and can be mounted anywhere. Just be aware there have been issues with the motion sensors on the Arlo’s capturing video at crucial times. Again, nothing beats a professionally installed outdoor system. Amazon Show makes a great baby monitor However, for indoor uses, these cameras add much value to your home. Have a newborn? Then look into getting an and combine it with either the Logitech Circle 2.0 or Amazon’s cloud-based camera mentioned earlier. You will have an instant baby monitor and can drop in anytime to listen in, or just watch from the living room while the baby sleeps. Alternatively, maybe your newborn is that new puppy. Either way, you will be covered. Amazon Show Other Items But wait, there’s more. We have not even talked about thermostats, sprinklers and garage door openers. I saved these to last because there are fewer choices in each category. Here are some recommendations. Thermostats Honey Lyric Thermostat If you have ever gotten up out of bed during the middle of the night to adjust the thermostat due to the weather changing, you may want to put this item higher up on your list. They have gotten pretty smart with geo-fence location (that means they know when you are at home or away) and can ultimately save you money in the long run. Also, they support auto temperatures where you can set it and forget about it. As of right now, there are two I would recommend: the and the . Both look great on the wall and have similar features. I chose the Lyric because of the SmartThings hub and Harmony hub integration. There are plenty of YouTube videos comparing the two. Just remember it needs to integrate and play nicely with other things. Nest Lyric by Honeywell Sprinklers Rachio Sprinkler iPhone App I will be honest; sprinklers scare me. They just pop out of the ground at random and squirt water and then disappear. It is like they never existed. So weird. This past summer, after much research, I installed . Of all the upgrades I have done, this one has saved me the most money. Rachio has some pretty impressive algorithms that automatically calculate when to water your yard based on the type of soil, incline, and the nearby weather station you have entered. Of course, if you have a personal weather station things get even more accurate. Rachio’s eight-zone sprinkler controller Remember the days of having to turn off the sprinkler when it rained? Gone. Worried about over watering your yard? Gone. Within the first few months of owning Rachio’s controller it paid for itself in all the water, it did not use due to all of the rain we had. It took about 20 minutes to install on the wall and then another hour of measuring the zones in the yard and testing everything out. Recently I was out of town and had a sprinkler head replaced. My yard guy texted me and asked me to turn the sprinklers on so he could find it (see, I told you they were scary) and replace it. I was over 2,000 miles away and opened the app and turned on the front yard. A few minutes later he texted back all set. Garage Door Opener There is nothing magical about garage door openers, and there aren’t that many choices. However, when you are away and need to get someone into your garage, they are a must-have. I have a . You will have to look up your unit and then investigate which one it supports based on the hub you have chosen. Linear GoControl Most of them work by attaching a sensor to the door that has a gyroscope in it. As the garage door moves, one way it is closed, the other way it is open. You can combine a sensor from SmartThings (if that is the hub you have chosen) and place it in your car. When the vehicle shows up the garage door opens, when it leaves, the garage door closes. Personally, I find this a new level of lazy, I mean, how hard is it to push a button in your car? But hey, let’s automate all the things. Wireless Speakers Sonos Play:5 Wireless Speaker Last, but not least are a new breed of speakers called wireless speakers. Of everything in automating your home, these high fidelity creatures are the most expensive by far. One speaker can cost as much as $700. However, just like everything else, start small. Buy one, then another, then another. and are the two top manufacturers in this space today led primarily by Sonos. The way they work is you buy a speaker and put it into a room. Then buy another speaker and put it in another place. Then you can connect your living room and all the other rooms in your house to play the same song at the same time. Great for party tricks for sure. They sound amazing and work with pretty much any and every type of music you want from Pandora, Spotify to Apple Music. Did I mention they sound amazing? Sonos Bose Sonos Soundbar However, they also work as a home theater. The goes in front of your TV and connects to the optical cable coming out of the TV. That is it, one wire. You join the rest of your speakers it to your WiFI network using the Sonos app and the speakers you have selected all sync and play whatever is coming out of your TV. Whether it connects to an , , , Cable, , or . You can start with just one speaker, the Playbar, and then expand to 5.1 theater sound as you go by adding a sub and then surround speakers. Did I mention they sound amazing? Playbar by Sonos Apple TV Roku Firestick XBox PlayStation But I have speakers, why do I need these again? Here is the upside. Remember those colossal home theater receivers by manufacturers like Denon and Onkyo? Wires running everywhere? Well, they are not needed now. As long as you have a power outlet, you can set a speaker there now (no more wires). Of all the devices I have added I use these the most. Working at home I’m streaming Spotify to the speakers from my Mac. Phone rings, pause the music, answer, hang up, resume playing. To add the home automation piece with our speakers, we leverage our Harmony Hub along with a Harmony Remote combined with the Amazon Echo. The Harmony Hub can control all of your multimedia devices as mentioned earlier and even run something called “Activities.” Activities are how you control what happens when you want to play Xbox for example. They carry out the steps needed to play Xbox: turn the tv on, set TV to the HDMI 2 port, turn on Sonos speakers, and turn on XBox. Now it just takes a voice command, “Alexa, play Xbox.” As you add more things to your home, more automation scenarios become a reality. New scenes become possible once you have installed wall switches, blinds, a garage door opener, and door locks, “Alexa, movie night.” All of your multimedia devices turn on, the blinds lower, the garage door closes, the lights dim, and all of your doors lock. Speaking a command like that and having magic happen sounds like science fiction I am sure. It is not that hard though. So start small, and by this time next year, you will stop worrying about watering your yard, turning off lights when you go to bed and even touching a remote. They are so 2016. A System… Complex Systems The macrosystems around us (energy, health, food, water) are grand in their scale and interrelated at levels that we are still trying to grasp. Despite our little but growing understanding of complex systems, we know that two things happen when they change: 1. The changes are nonlinear and the effects are oftentimes exponential 2. The changes affect more than the individual system we are studying Agriculture is a system that we know how to deal with since we understand the convergence of its inputs such as seed, land, soil quality, water, human capital etc. In , Donella Meadows calls ‘ . The elements (land, seed, water), interconnections (we plant the seeds, we water the seeds, there is a cycle of death before growth, harvest etc.) and the purpose (to feed people with the harvest) are all clear in agriculture. As we’ve industrialized, i.e. made changes to the complex agricultural system, we’ve seen the effects in the other complex systems like the job market, health (diseases from inorganic foods), weather (droughts) at the same time as we’ve seen the benefits. But we have come to realize the interconnectedness of the agricultural system with everything else we pay attention to. Thinking in Systems: A Primer a system an interconnected set of elements coherently organized in a way that achieves something . . . consisting of three parts: elements, interconnections, and a function or purpose The Utility System The utility is on the cusp of change, faster than the industry is prepared for or it has ever had to deal with. The utility that delivers our electricity has always favored stability over agility. This has enabled the utility to provide you and I power in a stable, safe and reliable way. There was a time when we valued that unconditionally. We had a contract, both physical and implied, that the utility would supply us with electricity when we needed it and we would pay for that electricity when we got the bill. The government, through policy and regulation, helped to maintain that contract. Things were fine. But that is changing. The utility now has competition from Tesla, Google and telecom companies. The pace of this change is partly due to ; smart meters, sensors, the (IoT and IIoT) and intelligent machines in our homes and buildings means there is more two-way flow of information. rapid digitization (another complex system that is having non-linear and exponential effects on other complex systems) Internet of Things The utility is also seeing changes due to competition from the construction industry who are bucking convention and constructing buildings in ways that totally remove the need for a utility’s services. A residential example is the (image below), and on the city scale . They are changing the concept of a distant and separate utility provider by incorporating all utility services (water, telecoms and power) as part of the embedded within their buildings.. This is playing out in the form of the connected home. The connected home is simply a network that enables the operations and interconnections of multiple devices and products in the home. In laymen’s terms, it’s a home that is computerized. It’s a Jetsons home. Traditional classifications of the devices in the home and use cases for connected devices (connected toothbrush anyone?) miss that consumers want just the basic things in their homes. The devices and their interoperability is currently packaged as networking, media, entertainment, energy usage and efficiency etc. What these terms miss is that the consumer does not talk in terms of ‘I want my home networked’. Rather, the average consumer will say ‘Is the home alarm on?’ as they go to bed. It’s the feeling of safety and security in their abode that they desire. Google Home, Nest Protect, Amazon Echo, Ring, August Lock, Leeo, Sonos, Plum, Sevenhugs, Canary, KamarQ, Sentry, Pwety, Latch, Wigwag, Edyn, Ivee, Rachio, Ecovent, Nanit, There, Beddit etc. The list of products that are vying for space in your connected home grows each day. Some absolutely pointless. Actually, most actually pointless. There is no empathy embedded in these products. Just business models. Note: one of those products up there does not exist. But you wouldn’t have known if I didn’t mention it. There are that many random products in the market today. he connected home is truly, and should really just be, a home that provides safety, comfort and convenience to the homeowner through the use of technology Long Term Systems Thinking If we agree the sum of these individual separated parts never equals the whole, why do we still focus on breaking things down into their component parts to get a better understanding of situations, companies and systems? Because we are focused on the short term. Analysis, which is really reductionism, robs us of our ability to critically think about whole systems. The companies building connected products for the home are missing the whole in pursuit of the ‘one’ thing they have to sell. And it’s further eroding the consumer’s ability to consider the bigger picture, especially with the complex and ambiguous systems that we’ve explored above, since it’s the easy thing to do. The signs suggest we won’t be doing much better in our near-term decision and policy making either. So what’s a possible solution? Big Bang Disruption Larry Downes and Paul Nunes, in their book, suggest that ‘ ’ differ from more traditional innovations not just in degree, but in kind. These disruptions are more inventive, better integrated with other services and products (for example taking a platform instead of a product approach) and that these disruptions take advantage of the customer’s access to more information about the product and their ability to share and contribute to the utilization of that product. This sounds exactly like some of the technologies that will be discussed later in this article and most especially sounds like the current state with Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), which I will not discuss in much detail. The changes caused by the big bang disruption might not be full replacements, as there will still be a need for a generation source, but the disruption might come in the form of engagement with the physical assets — e.g. a user managing their Powerwall electricity usage with the aid of . Big Bang Disruptions Artificial Intelligence and selling excess power through the blockchain How do big bang disruptions happen? They tend to follow a path of 1. : where the work is going on outside of the current constraints, e.g. regulatory, of the incumbents. Unencumbered development by the disruptor 2. : where the traditional product life cycle is shortened. The adoption curve looks different from the traditional early adopter, early majority, late majority to laggard curve. The new adoption path looks more like a straight line which heads up and then drops off once the market is saturated. Unconstrained growth 3. : unlike the stepwise strategic approach of the incumbent, an approach that would normally work, the disruptor tends to take a more undisciplined approach to product development. This enables the disruptor to bypass the more traditional approach of picking one of lower cost, constant innovation or customized offerings and try to implement all three strategies from the launch of their product; a better performing product customized to the customer need and sold at a lower price. This causes strategic confusion for the incumbent, or in our case the utility, who does not know how to respond to this competitive threat. Undisciplined strategy The Antifragile Utility: Recognizing The Disruption. Since the utility is my main focus, and since the work of the utility is now converging with the sustainable built environment movement, how do we get back to the system approach to thinking about the future of this industry? And in particular, directing our utilities and resources a little bit more (shall we say) towards a long-term focus? It’s actually quite simple. It’s by the utilities becoming , or a concept I’m calling it the anti-fragile grid. Like the natural systems it mimics, a sustainable farm is always a polyculture and depends on the synergies between its various components from soil microbes to animals. learning organizations Tesla Model S: A platform, not just a product : The main news about Autonomous EVs is the amount of electricity they’ll consume — . What the pundits miss is the anti-fragile system capacity that comes as a result of many autonomous vehicles operating and gathering data, data that becomes valuable for improving the whole system. This concept is called . In laymen’s terms; every autonomous vehicle that is driving thousands of the miles on the road is gaining knowledge, through machine learning, that improves the collective knowledge of every autonomous vehicle out there. When one autonomous vehicle experiences a shock, say an accident, even though the vehicle might have a little damage, the collective whole (the autonomous vehicle knowledge database) learns and improves. One vehicle, a node in the system, might have failed, but the whole system (adaptive system) has grown stronger from the shock to that node. Now replace the ‘autonomous vehicle’ node in the transport system with a ‘Tesla roadster/Tesla Powerwall/Solarcity panel’ node on an anti-fragile grid. The same antifragility can be achieved, where a shock to one Tesla/Solarcity node does not cause the whole system, or electric grid, to fail. In fact, the whole grid learns from the failure of that node and grows stronger by learning to allocate resources dynamically. Borrowing from the transportation industry (Tesla in particular) 2,701 terawatt-hours, or an 8 percent increase to global annual electricity demand by 2040 swarming Another part of this change should be in the utility’s approach to building capacity. Due to a design flaw in the utility system, the industry currently overbuilds. Generation projections are made years in advance to cater to expected customer demand and a best guesstimate about what utility costs and subsequent customer rates will be for electricity during peak periods in the future. While this is long-term thinking, it takes 5–6 years to plan and build a power plant, missing all the signals required when you are thinking in systems. This is siloed thinking focused on just the business requirements of the utility. Instead, the utility can benefit by that enables all the product providers (that long list at the start of this article) to provide system , while using the utility’s platform. The way the platform works is that, like agriculture, it forces the utility to focus on the purpose of the system; to enable the consumer to live comfortably and safely in their homes using energy. becoming a platform provider flexibility Connected Water Quality product/platform with ‘Clean Water’ As the Purpose (Image: Axis Design) Until there is a clear role for the utility (and whatever it chooses as its product) within this converging new system, consumers will continue to lose. The utility industry is about to get its lunch eaten by the most unexpected of competitors, as it is the nature of big bang disruptions, because of this unwillingness to think well beyond its current fat balance sheet. Heeding this warning and doing something about it now will determine the long term (and even midterm) existence of most of the utilities that we see around us today. Your thoughts? As a freelancer, I saw many limitations with the third-party freelancing platforms interacting between me and my clients. Thank you for having me! As a leading Product Manager at InDrive, a global ride-hailing service, I’m passionate about making transportation more accessible and efficient. With experience in the tech industry, surpassing more than five years, I’ve spearheaded product launches across 17 countries, impacting the lives of millions of users. Recently, I was honored to serve as a jury member for a 2023 Globee Women in Business Awards and the AI for Humanity Hackathon organized by Burning Heroes. As of 2024, I lead a talented team developing international ride-hailing services at InDrive, collaborating with colleagues from over 15 countries to ensure a seamless experience for riders and drivers worldwide. In particular, I specialize in optimizing driver-sender matches, creating solutions for users to make better deals within our platform, and using the latest cutting-edge technology, such as machine learning and economic principles. Such an approach enhances customer experience and platform efficiency – a win-win for everyone. Why did you choose this field in the first place? I’ve always been fascinated by technology’s potential to solve real-world problems and, most importantly, improve people’s lives. Plus, the fast-paced nature of tech keeps things exciting for me, with new challenges and opportunities to learn emerging technologies. In other words, the field offers a constant learning curve. Besides that, I'm particularly drawn to the collaborative culture where knowledge is shared openly within the tech community. This allows me to create solutions practically for every industry — medicine, AI, real estate — that can impact millions of people worldwide, which truly motivates me. What tech are you most excited/passionate about right now and why? While large language models (LLM) are the most anticipated development, several other technological advancements capture my interest. Here are a few areas I find particularly promising: New technologies, such as advanced biosensors and generic testing, tremendous possibilities for detecting severe diseases like cancer and autoimmune disorders at earlier stages. Additionally, the growing role of big data and its practical interpretation from medical scans (MRI and CT) can lead to better diagnoses, personalized treatment plans, and improved preventative care. In fact, several innovative startups are working in this direction, and I'm eager to see their progress. Healthcare advancements: offer Fully automating back-office processes through AI would benefit tech companies, manufacturers, and other industries. While it may seem ordinary, solving this narrow problem could have a massive impact on industry and enterprises’ efficiency and productivity. AI-powered enterprise automation: Platforms allowing users to create websites without coding are changing how people access technology creation. Recently, an AI tool code and communicated as a software engineer! Just imagine building mobile apps, data dashboards, or even simple workflow tools—all without writing a single line of code. These no-code tools and numerous pilot engineering tools are slowly transforming the landscape, empowering people, and reducing production costs in the digital world. Future of transportation: What tech are you most worried about right now and why? One primary concern about generative AI is the potential misuse of personal data to train these models. Although data privacy regulations are strengthening globally, there’s a lingering suspicion that corporations can still misuse personal data to gain an unfair advantage in the market. This raises a crucial question: Are these regulations compelling, and can the non-tech person understand them? What are your hobbies and interests outside of tech? I enjoy various activities that challenge me mentally and physically in my spare time. Take, for instance, tennis. It is a great way to hone my focus and develop a winning mindset. Its practice also taught me the importance of teamwork and effective conflict resolution. At the same time, psychology is another area I’m passionate about. Currently, I’m delving into Jungian Analysis, which helps me communicate with platform users unbiasedly and glean deeper insights from our conversations. This knowledge and my understanding of cultural differences foster greater empathy — a crucial skill when working on a product used in over twenty countries. I find it helpful to take conversation pauses, ask thoughtful questions, and practice active listening to bridge cultural gaps. Let's talk about breaking the glass ceiling. What were the biggest challenges you faced as a woman in tech, and how did you deal with them? Undoubtedly, the glass ceiling in tech remains a persistent issue, and statistics paint a clear picture – men significantly outnumber women. For instance, women for 25.3% of Google’s new tech hiring in 2023, compared to 20.8% in 2018. At the same time, Microsoft’s workforce to 33.1% in 2023, up from 29.2% in 2018. Other companies, such as Facebook and Apple, showed similar trends. The numbers reveal a stark reality: only one in three women work in the , compared to management, consulting, legal, or finance. accounted rose tech sector Several factors contribute to this disparity. For example, societal expectations can differ for men and women, with women often taking on greater childcare and household responsibilities. Additionally, tech can feel like a male-dominated environment, lacking role models for female leadership and fostering unconscious bias against women leading times in a traditionally masculine style. To navigate these challenges, I choose teams with inclusive cultures and actively support other women in tech. Practically speaking, I am an active participant in communities like Women in Tech that offer invaluable support networks where we can share experiences, empower each other, and curb any misogyny. Though a topic of debate, positive discrimination holds potential in the current landscape. When equally qualified candidates exist, a diverse slate can highlight potential unconscious bias within homogenous environments. The most significant challenge is ascending the corporate ladder within a male-dominated hierarchy. While some advise leveraging charisma to stand out, a more sustainable approach lies in achieving goals through shared objectives and mutual respect. Focusing solely on gender differences can reinforce bias. In contrast, a business-oriented approach fosters collaboration and paves the way for advancement. Any questionable misogynistic story/situation you faced/handled and you want to share with the HackerNoon Fam? While I may not have personally faced misogyny, it's essential to acknowledge that these situations still exist. We've all likely witnessed or heard about them. That's why standing with those who challenge inequality and fight for a more inclusive space is crucial. What's your biggest achievement that you're really proud of? One of my most significant achievements was leading the launch of intercity delivery product, which is now the leader of the mobility market in its country. It resulted in 47.4 million monthly active users by 2023. I managed five teams with numerous stakeholders and oversaw all aspects of the project, from product research to market assessment to financial planning. The product went live in over 100 cities nationwide within several months. In your opinion, why do we see this huge gender gap in the tech industry, and how can we reduce it? As mentioned earlier, the significant gender gap in tech stems from societal expectations and the industry's current culture. To bridge this gap, we need a two-pronged approach. First, we need to cultivate a more inclusive culture within tech. Initiatives like mentorship programs and fostering diverse hiring practices can help. Second, we need to address societal expectations. Normalizing women in tech and providing them with the support they need to balance work and life can create a more equitable future for the industry. Who is your tech idol? Why? Tech is full of inspiring figures, and a few people who stand out for me are Julie Zhuo, Lenny Rachitski, and Paul Graham. Julie's journey from intern to VP of design at Facebook, especially as a minority woman, is a powerful testament to her talent and perseverance. Her recent article on navigating company politics completely changed my perspective on workplace conflicts and empowered me to be more constructive. Sharing valuable insights while in leadership demonstrates her commitment to giving back and helping countless professionals. Lenny Rachitski's insightful product management blog and interviews with industry leaders offer a goldmine of knowledge for anyone in the field. His ability to spark discussions relevant to global communities makes his work exceptionally valuable. I deeply appreciate his contributions - these insights from experienced professionals are invaluable in the market. Finally, Paul Graham's writing on is a constant source of motivation. I often revisit it for inspiration. great work Do you have any advice for aspiring girls who want to join the field? Make sure your passion for this field is the driving force behind your decision. It can be challenging without support, so I recommend building a strong community around you. Look for mentors, participate in online forums, or attend industry events to connect with others. Get real-world experience through volunteering or internships related to your field. The stronger your network and the more you learn, the more opportunities will come. However, it's essential to find something you enjoy. Remember, your career path is yours to define. Don't be afraid to explore and change course if needed. The literature review shows that most works are interested in text in structured languages like English, French, Arabic, etc. However, few works deal with dialects, mainly the Algerian one, which is known for its complexity and variety. To fill in the gap, we propose in this paper a complete NLP approach to detect hate speech in the Algerian dialect. We built an annotated corpus of more than 13,5K documents, which is used to evaluate various deep learning architectures. The obtained results are very promising, where the most accurate was the DzaraShield . Looking ahead, there is significant potential to enhance inference speed, particularly for the Dziribert-based and multilingual models. While this project primarily focused on Arabic characters, our next step will be to address the dialect when written in Latin characters. Embracing both Arabic and Latin characters will more accurately capture the nuances of the written Algerian dialect.
