Things that I saw in person In one of the coffee shops where I worked, there was an employee who had been with the company for many years. She mastered all the opening and closing procedures of the store, knew how to prepare all the drinks and snacks on the menu, and had also worked in other franchised stores of the company. In this coffee shop, we worked in three shifts: opening, intermediate and closing. The coffee shop was in a shopping mall, opening before the stores and closing at 11 PM during the week and midnight on weekends. This employee had a son who was about 7 or 8 years old, and she was the only one responsible for him because the father had disappeared or something like that. She had a sister who, when necessary, would pick up the boy from school and take him home until she got off work. One day, she told me that her son’s teacher was very concerned because he was always tired in class, sleepy, and inattentive. The teacher asked her to pay attention to his sleep schedule. The problem was that the boy could only sleep when his mother got home. He stayed awake waiting to do his homework and spend some time with her. Although she had asked him not to wait for her, he said he needed help with his homework and couldn’t sleep until she arrived. She was very sad because she didn’t know what to do, especially since the following week she would have to work the night shift again. So, I suggested that we talk to the bosses, who were responsible for making the schedules, and proposed swapping shifts with her so that she would always have the morning shift and I the night shift. I lived just three minutes from the mall, and my wife also worked late, so it wouldn’t be a problem for me. In fact, I would be happy to help. We talked to the bosses, explained the situation, and requested the shift change. They said that, unfortunately, they couldn’t change it because the shifts had to be rotating to be “fair” to everyone. In another restaurant where I worked for about six months, we had three bosses who took turns in command. Each was very, very different from the other, and I remember one day in particular when one of the more irritable bosses was in charge of the store. Clearly, he wasn’t having a good day. From what I understood of the situation, the pasta machine had jammed, and according to him, it was because one of the cooks hadn’t put enough milk in the dough. He simply threw a box of milk in her face. I clearly remember seeing that woman, black and strong, all soaked in milk, with tears in her eyes. She didn’t quit because she couldn’t; she had a child to raise. There was another case where the restaurant owner was quite sadistic with the employees. When someone resigned and gave the one-month notice, he made that person’s life a living hell, assigning the worst tasks, at the worst times, and humiliating them in front of others in the most cruel way possible. And of course, there was that other incident where a boss pushed me because I was arranging the refrigerator with my shirt sleeves rolled up. He had previously warned me that I shouldn’t leave my tattoos visible to customers, even though the restaurant was still closed and there were no customers. Things that I saw online I’ve seen many reports on Medium, LinkedIn, and YouTube from people working in the tech sector, mainly, talking openly about how they feel purposeless in their remote, well-paid jobs with flexible hours, good work-life balance, company stock options, annual bonuses, and even office toys… Not to mention the free coffee and snacks. Just a small parenthesis: the coffee in the coffee shops where I worked wasn’t free for employees. These people have talked about how they want to work in a place that gives them more purpose in life, such as in a supermarket as shelf stockers. They really believe that these jobs are stress-free, but guess what: work is not stress-free. Let’s take the example of someone who quits everything to work in a supermarket. This was the case that recently appeared on my timeline. Work in the market is also divided and rotating shifts, to be “fair” to everyone. This means you won’t have time to organize yourself to take a course, practice a sport, or even pick up or drop off your kids at school at the same time, because you won’t have a fixed routine. Your weekly organization will need to be done according to the rotation of shifts, which means you can forget about medium-term commitments. Additionally, you rarely earn more than the minimum wage, have to deal with cleaning the supermarket (yes, it’s not just the cleaning team that cleans, everyone cleans), and you have to control what leaves the stock first and the order of expiration dates on the shelves. And all this while customers are on top of you, wanting to grab the items you just placed, often literally over your head, as if you didn’t exist, as if you were just an obstacle to the product. I find it very difficult to understand how this job, as dignified and necessary as it is, can bring purpose to someone who previously had all the freedom, money, and benefits I mentioned before. The intersection I believe people have this out-of-touch thinking because, for the most part, they have never worked in other areas. They don’t know that when the restaurant closes, the employees have to stay there for at least another hour cleaning and restocking everything for the next day. I currently work at a tech company as a software engineer, and most of my colleagues have never had another job besides IT. They often complain that they don’t have enough freedom, even though we don’t experience micromanagement, and we have paid days off and many other perks. Many believe they would be happier doing something “simpler”. And I think that’s where the problem lies: work should not be your main source of happiness. It’s not work that brings purpose to life. Work is there to support you, so that you can provide what you and your family need to live, so that you can make choices. Money may not bring happiness, but the lack of it to the point of not being able to put food on the table brings a lot of unhappiness, that I can guarantee. My thoughts I really like what the character Tina from the series The Bear says in episode 6 of the third season: “ I’ll clean a dish. I’ll wash a floor. I’ll sell some bullshit. I gotta cover this ass, right? Just look, I don’t need to be inspired. I don’t need to be impassioned. I don’t need to make magic. I don’t need to save the world, you know? Most people will need to work for the rest of their lives, so if you’re unhappy and can make a change, do it (“unfortunately, most people can’t”)! Today, I have freedom, a job I enjoy doing, and the peace of knowing that I can provide everything my family needs. I didn’t change because I needed more purpose, I changed because I needed better living conditions. People with great positions, salaries, and benefits want to abandon their fields to do something with more meaning, with purpose, with impact on the world, maybe… Without realizing that the only purpose of work is to enrich the boss. In case it wasn’t clear, the purpose of work is to generate wealth for the company, not to create a life of happiness for you. Happiness and purpose change from person to person. For my former co-workers, the purpose was to take care of their children. For others, it may be helping their parents, spending more time with friends, traveling, playing an instrument, or sleeping 8 hours a night in a warm bed. Work wasn’t THE PURPOSE; it was a means to get there. So, don’t romanticize other people’s professions so much, and try to see your work with a bit more optimism. There are good days, bad days, some days you are able to be successful, some days you are not, some days it is your turn, some days it’s not. That’s what sports is about. Panpsychism: Quantum Superposition and Entanglement or Qubits without Cells?

In a few short weeks, I will be leaving my job as Director of Engineering "in the industry" and starting a new one as a high school Computer Science and Cybersecurity Instructor. I am equal parts excited and scared shitless—or some other type of scared that is more professional... like.... panicked poopless... concernedly constipated?—so I have been calling this transition my Big Scary Thing™️. Because it is big and scary, but it's also something that excites me and deserves my respect (or at least the capitalization of a proper noun). While I will be teaching at the high school level, what makes this opportunity especially exciting is the focus. The program I have joined is a public career and technical education center specifically for high school students that offers a particularly unique value proposition: For 3 hours a day, Junior and Senior high school students who apply to the program leave their home schools in order to receive a tuition-free education in a trade or career of their interest or choice. From dental assisting to cosmetology to airplane maintenance to graphic design to (you guessed it) computer science and cybersecurity, students have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to kickstart their futures. As a former student of the exact same program I am taking over (albeit a program I went through 20 years ago), I am deeply grateful that something like it even exists and provides a huge range of career paths for students who may not be able to afford or attend college due to that tricky thing called "life circumstances." The fact that it exists at all is a blessing, and I am honored to be a part of it. To anyone who knows me, a mid-career shift from working as an engineering leader "in-industry" to teaching at the public high school level is probably not all that surprising; mentorship and coaching are the things that I have enjoyed the most in my leadership roles—at this point in my life, they are just about the only things I enjoy in those roles anymore—and a not-insignificant amount of my personal time over the last few years has been dedicated to volunteering with various STEM and Computer Science programs within the state of Colorado. That said, in many ways, this isn't a new chapter in my life, but an entirely new book. For the first time in my career, I will be working solely for the betterment of others, rather than myself or my employer. I believe in the life-changing possibilities a background in computing offers because college isn't in everyone's future, but a financially secure life can be. It is a profound responsibility; one that I won't be taking lightly. As the new instructor, my goals for the program are going to primarily be career readiness. While it looks good on college applications—and I get to offer college credit to boot—my primary goal will be inspiring a passion for computing, while simultaneously driving industry certifications and internships. My hope is to give my students an opportunity to build their resumes before they even get their high school diplomas. It's going to be a lot to take in, and I know that I will be learning just as much as I am teaching, so I intend to document this (potentially insane) journey from Professional Nerd to Teacher of Professional Nerds. From lesson plans to lessons learned, I hope to build a platform both on and off HackerNoon to help others who are considering making a similar leap of faith in their own careers. It's going to be a journey, and I'm excited to bring the world along with me on it. To anyone who knows me, a mid-career shift from working as an engineering leader "in-industry" to teaching at the public high school level is probably not all that surprising; mentorship and coaching are the things that I have enjoyed the most in my leadership roles—at this point in my life, they are just about the only things I enjoy in those roles anymore—and a not-insignificant amount of my personal time over the last few years has been dedicated to volunteering with various STEM and Computer Science programs within the state of Colorado. only That said, in many ways, this isn't a new chapter in my life, but an entirely new book. For the first time in my career, I will be working solely for the betterment of others, rather than myself or my employer. I believe in the life-changing possibilities a background in computing offers because college isn't in everyone's future, but a financially secure life can be. can It is a profound responsibility; one that I won't be taking lightly. As the new instructor, my goals for the program are going to primarily be career readiness. While it looks good on college applications—and I get to offer college credit to boot—my primary goal will be inspiring a passion for computing, while simultaneously driving industry certifications and internships. My hope is to give my students an opportunity to build their resumes before they even get their high school diplomas. It's going to be a lot to take in, and I know that I will be learning just as much as I am teaching, so I intend to document this (potentially insane) journey from Professional Nerd to Teacher of Professional Nerds . From lesson plans to lessons learned, I hope to build a platform both on and off HackerNoon to help others who are considering making a similar leap of faith in their own careers. Among many innovations there is a very intriguing topic that has been in trend these days of “Quantum AI” . It promises to revolutionize how we process information and solve complex problems. Quantum AI leverages these quantum principles to enhance the capabilities of AI. Therefore, to understand the concept of Quantum AI, we need to understand Quantum mechanics first. What is Quantum Mechanics? Traditional computers that we use nowadays are based on the concept of bits, which can take a value of 0 or 1 based on the requirements. The operations involved are primarily based out of OR, AND, or NOT gates. Whereas, this basic foundation changes when it comes to quantum mechanics, which uses Quantum Bits (qubits). The difference is that qubits can hold 0, 1, or both 0 and 1 at the same time until they are measured. Qubits use a physical property of superposition. Taking an example of flipping a coin, in classic computer it takes a value of heads or tails. Whereas in quantum mechanics, its value can be heads or tails until you observe it. Quantum mechanics works on three basic concepts: Superposition

Tunneling Superposition Superposition allows a qubit to be in multiple states simultaneously. Superposition is crucial because it allows quantum computers to process a vast amount of information simultaneously. A perfect example here is of Schrödinger's Cat. Imagine a cat being placed in a sealed box with a radioactive atom, Geiger counter, a vial of poison, and a hammer. If the Geiger counter detects radiation (which depends on the random decay of the atom), it triggers the hammer to break the vial, releasing the poison and killing the cat. Quantum mechanics suggests that until one is opened and observed, the atom is in a superposition of being decayed or not being decayed. A similar concept holds for the cat as well. Until we open the box, the cat could be dead or alive. Entanglement If two particles are interconnected, in classical physics, they carry properties of each other as long as they are in connection with each other. As the distance between the particles increases, their interconnected properties start fading. Opposite of this happens in quantum mechanics, no matter how far away the particles are from each other, one of the particle can directly influence the star of other particle. To simplify, if one measures the state of one particle, one automatically knows the state of another particle regardless of the distance between them. This instantaneous correlation occurs because the particles share a combined quantum state. Tunneling It is a phenomenon in quantum mechanics where a particle can pass through a barrier that it classically shouldn't be able to cross. A simple example is a ball rolling up a hill. In the classical case, if the ball does not contain enough energy to climb up the hill, it will roll back. Whereas, if this is created in quantum mechanics, the ball has the probability of traveling through the tunnel and will reach the other side of the hill even if it does not have enough energy. Basics of Quantum Artificial Intelligence: Qubits

Decoding my dive into the IBM Quantum Challenge 2024 Greetings from the sunny shores of Durban! Having just braved the IBM Quantum Challenge 2024 & still harboring a serious case of quantum fever, I‘m here to spill the Qiskit Kool-Aid on the good, the not-so-bad and the downright mind-blowing. While the focus this year was broader, the last time I took part was IBM Quantum Challenge Africa 2021, which was all about tackling issues that hit close to home. Teaming up with Wits University, the IBM Research Lab in South Africa developed a challenge that targeted real-world African problems with crop logistics in Agriculture, Financial optimization and quantum Drug discovery. It was all about empowering us as African problem-solvers with the skills and knowledge to leverage the power of quantum computing for our communities. 2K24 & I’m levelling up my Quantum IQ: Lets be honest, quantum computing can feel like its spoken in a language only qubits understand. Going into this challenge, I was a solid 5 outta 10 on the quantum knowledge scale. By the end? Lets just say I graduated to a confident 6😉 The challenge wasn’t just informative, it made these mind-bending concepts feel tangible. So, Challenge Accepted (with a few Nitpicks) the whole experience gets a thumbs up from me - a solid 10 outta 10. The content was dense (think brain food buffet) but the learning curve never really felt like a sheer cliff. Our real-time forum for troubleshooting was epic, all of our challenge parties in different corners of the globe, not forgetting our Dev humor keeping us sane. Tools that stole the show this challenge came loaded with some seriously cool tools, and a few that deserve special recognition: Qiskit Code Assistant This code-whisperer was a godsend, suggesting optimizations and catching errors like a quantum ninja, in the Beta version! And being the first ones to try him out! t’was super cool to be able to do that!
Qiskit Serverless This auto backend selection had me deploying quantum tasks like a pro. Plus, the seamless integration and potential for parallel workflows? Quantum Devs, rejoice! A small caveat: more documentation on custom backend integration would be thee cherry on top.
AI Transpiler This one showed promise, but had a few hiccups with a shopping list of errors (think gremlins in the lab) 🥴
Circuit Knitting Toolbox more like untangling the Quantum yarn, this lab showed me how to break down complex circuits into bite-sized pieces.
VQC & Error Mitigation building a Variational Quantum Classifier, this was a such a cool lab. This lab threw me into the heart of practical quantum machine learning.
Scaling VQC to 50+ Qubits had me taking Quantum leaps & bounds, pushing both hardware and my understanding of quantum simulations to the limit. It wasn’t  just about building a bigger classifier, this was a glimpse into the future. These last 10 days have certainly been a game changer for quantum engineers and I have come out with so much new knowledge. Major props to the Team of Developers for the crystal clear instructions & the encouragement. Imagine bouncing ideas off fellow quantum Devs/engineers, it was a perfect blend of theory, practice and future-focused challenges - now that’s how we conquer collaboratively. For my setup, I primarily tested my Labs locally before running them in the Cloud, giving me the flexibility to switch environments. Sure, there were a few code-based hiccups, but nothing a little debugging couldn’t fix. Each lab built upon the previous one, creating a beautiful symphony of learning. Some Advice to Sharpen your Quantum Sword Before diving in, brush up on the basics, online courses are great places to start.
Practice makes perfect, find platforms that offer tutorials and playgrounds to experiment with quantum circuits.

Recently, a growing rumor has taken hold of social networks: Saudi Arabia has ended the petrodollar system. Accounts on X, which follow news from the BRICS countries, are having a field day announcing the death of the petrodollar. According to these X accounts, a 50-year-old agreement between Saudi Arabia and America has expired. This agreement obliged Saudi Arabia to denominate its oil in dollars. Henceforth, Saudi Arabia would be free to sell its oil in RMB, Euros, Yen, or Yuan and no longer exclusively in US dollars. Some then went even further, saying that the death of the petrodollar would benefit Bitcoin. For some, everything is supposed to benefit Bitcoin despite common sense... These same influencers found a shortcut by announcing that this would promote the emergence of Bitcoin as the world's reserve currency. Rather than let the influencers dictate what you should think on the subject, I thought it was essential to take stock of the issue so that you can form your own opinion. That's what the Bitcoin revolution is all about: Don't Trust, Verify. I'll give you some arguments that you can incorporate into your thought process, and then you can decide for yourself! To begin with, you need to understand that there has never been such an agreement between Saudi Arabia and America. The petrodollar did emerge in 1974, three short years after the end of the Bretton Woods Agreement, but there is no written agreement. The U.S. dollar is not backed by Saudi kings or oil but rather by the fact that U.S. Treasury bonds are the most liquid market in the world. An agreement between Saudi Arabia and America has nothing to do with that. On the other hand, if the BRICS governments want to break away from the US dollar, they're not going to do it with press releases. Nor can they do so by choosing to denominate their oil in anything other than US dollars. That would have no impact. Denomination doesn't matter; what matters is what's held in cash balances. To weaken the US dollar, governments can only choose to put their cash reserves into assets other than US Treasury bills. The problem boils down to that phrase you've been hearing for decades about the US dollar: There Is No Alternative. You may be more familiar with the acronym TINA. The Euro is a dollar to which you add European risk. China doesn't have an open capital market for foreign governments to hold its bonds, unlike the US dollar. The other economies are too small. What's more, their monetary and fiscal policies are frequently worse than those applied in America. Gold is too expensive to move and verify. If governments wanted to move into gold, they would negotiate and work out authorization mechanisms instead of issuing meaningless press releases. Such a gold switch could only take place if governments were to return to a gold standard, but this is not the path being followed, as all countries are statist. A move towards gold would, however, open their eyes to an obvious reality. To challenge the domination of the dollar king, we need to turn to Bitcoin. But the BRICS countries are still a long way off. As you can see, China, Russia, India, and Saudi Arabia have no desire to cede their monetary sovereignty to a neutral, apolitical system that belongs to the people. Bitcoin is synonymous with freedom in the broadest sense of the word, whether financial or personal. Do you think that the Chinese Communist Party wants to offer its people such freedom on a platter? For the Chinese Communist Party, freedom is synonymous with danger. The CCP has installed a society of mass surveillance in China over the past few years, and there's no question of turning back. On the contrary, the e-RMB is in an advanced testing phase and is the last missing piece in China's mass surveillance system. The idea that the BRICS countries are opting for Bitcoin together seems to me to be mistaken, but only time will tell. This is because we offered free version to test the market first. We are fully bootstrapped, not having millions to burn. Quickly implemented the pricing system and started to accept payment. 2 days after that, a glimmer of hope appeared, we got the 1st monthly subscription user! But alas, it was a false alert, the user made a mistake, he wanted to pay for an add-on in our product, not the core service. Got the money, but not the validation for the product. Self-doubt crept in like a relentless shadow. Considered pivot, discussed how to get new users. 4 days later - today - made a big update, fixed all the bugs early users complained, released the most-wanted features. Sent email to all users about the big updates 6 hours ago. Went for a walk. Came back home and... 1st yearly subscription user!!! Cannot believe my eyes! Yearly!? This feels good. Super, super good! Self-doubt is disappearing I know we still have a lot to go but this small step matters. It's a boost of confidence to our vision: To x10 human productivity and creativity. ✅ Big learning: Before trying to target new users, listen to current ones, do the things they need, then communicate it to them, show them you care. What IS this Chatbot Anyway? My AI chatbot: Top Content Bot, is a companion for anyone who is just getting started or wants to break into the world of content creation and influencing. This chatbot simplifies the process of developing social media strategies, content ideas, and tips to better capture one’s desired niche and shorten the learning curve for new creators. It’s easy to use and a resounding success when I ran tests to see if the bot was versatile enough to give niche advice while also being able to gently start beginners off on their content creation journeys. A video recording of the bot in use can be found here. Behind the Scenes: The Top Content Bot The creation of the bot was quite easy even though I don’t know how to code! Using Coze’s straightforward bot creation dashboard, I was able to create the Top Content Bot, integrating high-end APIs, workflows, and databases at the click of a button. There was also a YouTube tutorial video on Coze’s channel that made the already seamless process even easier with detailed explanations about each option offered and its effects on the bot’s eventual outcome. Initially, I used a prompt saying, “You are a content strategy and idea generation bot. Your job is to help me make great content by generating ideas for my videos, blogs and any other shared media”. Thanks to the tutorial video, I used the “Optimize” option which helped me detail exactly what I wanted the bot to do with written code, templates, and formats. From there, I added what databases my bot would draw knowledge from. I went with YouTube, Google Search, TikTok, and Chat GPT4. These databases are vast with the knowledge of user-influenced search engine prompts and video formats for the chatbot to draw inspiration from when serving users. I also added a voice assistant to read out its questions or answers in order to accommodate users with visibility impairments. Start To Finish To begin, I went to the ‘+’ sign on the top left of the Coze homepage. I entered the name of my bot and a short description, and I was taken to this page which allowed me to type in and optimize my prompt for the creation of the bot. I thought I was going to get confused for sure, but the Coze tutorial video was very helpful in clearing up any ambiguities. A Preview and debug section ensured that every step of the way, I could correct any discrepancies before publishing the AI agent. I’m very proud of how efficient this bot is after only one iteration. The chat box is responsive both in English and French, so it is available to more users looking for a way to easily tap into their creativity. I hope that this chatbot makes at least one content creator’s work a bit easier to stay on top of. In the future, I hope that this chat will be instrumental in developing content creators and helping them get into the game faster instead of wasting precious time doubting themselves or doing research and strategy that can be completed in minutes. I also hope future iterations of this bot will include storyboard generation and script writing optimization to enhance the quality of the content being created by target users. Conclusively, this was the easiest foray into no-code tech I have experienced. It has inspired me to try my hands at even more AI bot creation in the future.
