Intel C++ compilers In this story, we unravel the layers of compiler magic that can transform your code into a high-performance masterpiece, requiring less manual intervention than you might think. For instance, my Skylake machine has 3 SIMD units: 1 AVX 512 and 2 AVX-2 units. Can I really do something with this knowledge??? The answer lies in strategic compiler flags. Experimenting with options such as “ ” and, more precisely, “ ” may allow us to harness the full potential of the machine’s capabilities and tailor optimizations for optimal performance. -xHost -xCORE-AVX512 Here is a quick description of what these flags are all about: -xHost: Specifies that the compiler should generate code optimized for the host machine’s highest instruction set. Goal: Takes advantage of the latest features and capabilities available on the hardware. It can give an amazing speedup on the target system. Key Features: While this flag optimizes for the host architecture, it might result in binaries that are not portable across different machines with varying instruction set architectures. Bow wahbah woobooyah? Bow wow?” he asked Bruno, severely. Of course Bruno understood all this, easily enough. All Fairies understand Doggee—-that is, Dog-language. But, as you may find it a little difficult, just at first, I had better put it into English for you. “Humans, I verily believe! A couple of stray Humans! What Dog do you belong to? What do you want?” “We don't belong to a Dog!” Bruno began, in Doggee. (“Peoples never belongs to Dogs!” he whispered to Sylvie.) But Sylvie hastily checked him, for fear of hurting the Mastiff's feelings. “Please, we want a little food, and a night's lodging—if there's room in the house,” she added timidly. Sylvie spoke Doggee very prettily: but I think it's almost better, for you, to give the conversation in English. “The house, indeed!” growled the Sentinel. “Have you never seen a Palace in your life? Come along with me! His Majesty must settle what's to be done with you.” They followed him through the entrance-hall, down a long passage, and into a magnificent Saloon, around which were grouped dogs of all sorts and sizes. Two splendid Blood-hounds were solemnly sitting up, one on each side of the crown-bearer. Two or three Bull-dogs—-whom I guessed to be the Body-Guard of the King—were waiting in grim silence: in fact the only voices at all plainly audible were those of two little dogs, who had mounted a settee, and were holding a lively discussion that looked very like a quarrel. “Lords and Ladies in Waiting, and various Court Officials,” our guide gruffly remarked, as he led us in. Of me the Courtiers took no notice whatever: but Sylvie and Bruno were the subject of many inquisitive looks, and many whispered remarks, of which I only distinctly caught one—made by a sly-looking Dachshund to his friend “Bah wooh wahyah hoobah Oobooh, hah bah?” (“She's not such a bad-looking Human, is she?”) Leaving the new arrivals in the centre of the Saloon, the Sentinel advanced to a door, at the further end of it, which bore an inscription, painted on it in Doggee, “Royal Kennel—scratch and Yell.” Before doing this, the Sentinel turned to the children, and said “Give me your names.” “We'd rather not!” Bruno exclaimed, pulling' Sylvie away from the door. “We want them ourselves. Come back, Sylvie! Come quick!” “Nonsense!” said Sylvie very decidedly: and gave their names in Doggee. Then the Sentinel scratched violently at the door, and gave a yell that made Bruno shiver from head to foot. “Hooyah wah!” said a deep voice inside. (That's Doggee for “Come in!”) “It's the King himself!” the Mastiff whispered in an awestruck tone. “Take off your wigs, and lay them humbly at his paws.” (What we should call “at his feet.”) Sylvie was just going to explain, very politely, that really they couldn't perform that ceremony, because their wigs wouldn't come off, when the door of the Royal Kennel opened, and an enormous Newfoundland Dog put his head out. “Bow wow?” was his first question. “When His Majesty speaks to you,” the Sentinel hastily whispered to Bruno, “you should prick up your ears!” Bruno looked doubtfully at Sylvie. “I'd rather not, please,” he said. “It would hurt.” {Image...The dog-king} “It doesn't hurt a bit!” the Sentinel said with some indignation. “Look! It's like this!” And he pricked up his ears like two railway signals. Sylvie gently explained matters. “I'm afraid we ca'n't manage it,” she said in a low voice. “I'm very sorry: but our ears haven't got the right—” she wanted to say “machinery” in Doggee: but she had forgotten the word, and could only think of “steam-engine.” The Sentinel repeated Sylvie's explanation to the King. “Can't prick up their ears without a steam-engine!” His Majesty exclaimed. “They must be curious creatures! I must have a look at them!” And he came out of his Kennel, and walked solemnly up to the children. What was the amazement—nor to say the horror of the whole assembly, when Sylvie actually patted His Majesty on the head, while Bruno seized his long ears and pretended to tie them together under his chin! The Sentinel groaned aloud: a beautiful Greyhound who appeared to be one of the Ladies in Waiting—fainted away: and all the other Courtiers hastily drew back, and left plenty of room for the huge Newfoundland to spring upon the audacious strangers, and tear them limb from limb. Only—he didn't. On the contrary his Majesty actually smiled so far as a Dog can smile—and (the other Dogs couldn't believe their eyes, but it was true, all the same) his Majesty wagged his tail! “Yah! Hooh hahwooh!” (that is “Well! I never!”) was the universal cry. His Majesty looked round him severely, and gave a slight growl, which produced instant silence. “Conduct my friends to the banqueting-hall!” he said, laying such an emphasis on “my friends” that several of the dogs rolled over helplessly on their backs and began to lick Bruno's feet. A procession was formed, but I only ventured to follow as far as the door of the banqueting-hall, so furious was the uproar of barking dogs within. So I sat down by the King, who seemed to have gone to sleep, and waited till the children returned to say good-night, when His Majesty got up and shook himself. “Time for bed!” he said with a sleepy yawn. “The attendants will show you your room,” he added, aside, to Sylvie and Bruno. “Bring lights!” And, with a dignified air, he held out his paw for them to kiss. But the children were evidently not well practised in Court-manners. Sylvie simply stroked the great paw: Bruno hugged it: the Master of the Ceremonies looked shocked. All this time Dog-waiters, in splendid livery, were running up with lighted candles: but, as fast as they put them upon the table, other waiters ran away with them, so that there never seemed to be one for me, though the Master kept nudging me with his elbow, and repeating, “I ca'n't let you sleep here! You're not in bed, you know!” I made a great effort, and just succeeded in getting out the words “I know I'm not. I'm in an arm-chair.” “Well, forty winks will do you no harm,” the Master said, and left me. I could scarcely hear his words: and no wonder: he was leaning over the side of a ship, that was miles away from the pier on which I stood. The ship passed over the horizon and I sank back into the arm-chair. The next thing I remember is that it was morning: breakfast was just over: Sylvie was lifting Bruno down from a high chair, and saying to a Spaniel, who was regarding them with a most benevolent smile, “Yes, thank you we've had a very nice breakfast. Haven't we, Bruno?” “There was too many bones in the”—Bruno began, but Sylvie frowned at him, and laid her finger on her lips, for, at this moment, the travelers were waited on by a very dignified officer, the Head-Growler, whose duty it was, first to conduct them to the King to bid him farewell and then to escort them to the boundary of Dogland. The great Newfoundland received them most affably but instead of saying “good-bye” he startled the Head-growler into giving three savage growls, by announcing that he would escort them himself. It is a most unusual proceeding, your Majesty! the Head-Growler exclaimed, almost choking with vexation at being set aside, for he had put on his best Court-suit, made entirely of cat-skins, for the occasion. “I shall escort them myself,” his Majesty repeated, gently but firmly, laying aside the Royal robes, and changing his crown for a small coronet, “and you may stay at home.” “I are glad!” Bruno whispered to Sylvie, when they had got well out of hearing. “He were so welly cross!” And he not only patted their Royal escort, but even hugged him round the neck in the exuberance of his delight. His Majesty calmly wagged the Royal tail. “It's quite a relief,” he said, “getting away from that Palace now and then! Royal Dogs have a dull life of it, I can tell you! Would you mind” (this to Sylvie, in a low voice, and looking a little shy and embarrassed) “would you mind the trouble of just throwing that stick for me to fetch?” Sylvie was too much astonished to do anything for a moment: it sounded such a monstrous impossibility that a King should wish to run after a stick. But Bruno was equal to the occasion, and with a glad shout of “Hi then! Fetch it, good Doggie!” he hurled it over a clump of bushes. The next moment the Monarch of Dogland had bounded over the bushes, and picked up the stick, and came galloping back to the children with it in his mouth. Bruno took it from him with great decision. “Beg for it!” he insisted; and His Majesty begged. “Paw!” commanded Sylvie; and His Majesty gave his paw. In short, the solemn ceremony of escorting the travelers to the boundaries of Dogland became one long uproarious game of play! “But business is business!” the Dog-King said at last. “And I must go back to mine. I couldn't come any further,” he added, consulting a dog-watch, which hung on a chain round his neck, “not even if there were a Cat insight!” They took an affectionate farewell of His Majesty, and trudged on. “That were a dear dog!” Bruno exclaimed. “Has we to go far, Sylvie? I's tired!” “Not much further, darling!” Sylvie gently replied. “Do you see that shining, just beyond those trees? I'm almost sure it's the gate of Fairyland! I know it's all golden—Father told me so and so bright, so bright!” she went on dreamily. “It dazzles!” said Bruno, shading his eyes with one little hand, while the other clung tightly to Sylvie's hand, as if he were half-alarmed at her strange manner. For the child moved on as if walking in her sleep, her large eyes gazing into the far distance, and her breath coming and going in quick pantings of eager delight. I knew, by some mysterious mental light, that a great change was taking place in my sweet little friend (for such I loved to think her) and that she was passing from the condition of a mere Outland Sprite into the true Fairy-nature. Upon Bruno the change came later: but it was completed in both before they reached the golden gate, through which I knew it would be impossible for me to follow. I could but stand outside, and take a last look at the two sweet children, ere they disappeared within, and the golden gate closed with a bang. And with such a bang! “It never will shut like any other cupboard-door,” Arthur explained. “There's something wrong with the hinge. However, here's the cake and wine. And you've had your forty winks. So you really must get off to bed, old man! You're fit for nothing else. Witness my hand, Arthur Forester, M.D.” By this time I was wide-awake again. “Not quite yet!” I pleaded. “Really I'm not sleepy now. And it isn't midnight yet.” “Well, I did want to say another word to you,” Arthur replied in a relenting tone, as he supplied me with the supper he had prescribed. “Only I thought you were too sleepy for it to-night.” We took our midnight meal almost in silence; for an unusual nervousness seemed to have seized on my old friend. “What kind of a night is it?” he asked, rising and undrawing the window-curtains, apparently to change the subject for a minute. I followed him to the window, and we stood together, looking out, in silence. “When I first spoke to you about—” Arthur began, after a long and embarrassing silence, “that is, when we first talked about her—for I think it was you that introduced the subject—my own position in life forbade me to do more than worship her from a distance: and I was turning over plans for leaving this place finally, and settling somewhere out of all chance of meeting her again. That seemed to be my only chance of usefulness in life.” “Would that have been wise?” I said. “To leave yourself no hope at all?” “There was no hope to leave,” Arthur firmly replied, though his eyes glittered with tears as he gazed upwards into the midnight sky, from which one solitary star, the glorious 'Vega,' blazed out in fitful splendour through the driving clouds. “She was like that star to me—bright, beautiful, and pure, but out of reach, out of reach!” He drew the curtains again, and we returned to our places by the fireside. “What I wanted to tell you was this,” he resumed. “I heard this evening from my solicitor. I can't go into the details of the business, but the upshot is that my worldly wealth is much more than I thought, and I am (or shall soon be) in a position to offer marriage, without imprudence, to any lady, even if she brought nothing. I doubt if there would be anything on her side: the Earl is poor, I believe. But I should have enough for both, even if health failed.” “I wish you all happiness in your married life!” I cried. “Shall you speak to the Earl to-morrow?” “Not yet awhile,” said Arthur. “He is very friendly, but I dare not think he means more than that, as yet. And as for—as for Lady Muriel, try as I may, I cannot read her feelings towards me. If there is love, she is hiding it! No, I must wait, I must wait!” I did not like to press any further advice on my friend, whose judgment, I felt, was so much more sober and thoughtful than my own; and we parted without more words on the subject that had now absorbed his thoughts, nay, his very life. A VISIT TO DOGLAND

“Because there is so little opportunity for intimacy in daily life, and because some forms of intimacy (especially if intense) are psychologically impossible for most people, the bulk of the time in serious social life is taken up with playing games.” -  Eric Berne Sometimes we engage in bad habits that make relationships icky and inauthentic. Here’s a look at three ways we do this. The Karpman Drama Triangle This model explains a power game we sometimes play. It’s a power game because when we adopt one of the roles, the other person is usually compelled to adopt one of the two remaining roles. It takes a lot of emotional intelligence and self-awareness to not engage. As an example, next time someone comes to you all worked up with annoyance in their voice and a can-you-believe-this-happened-to-me attitude and starts telling you a story instead of attuning to that annoyance, remain neutral and don’t react, just listen. The level of self-righteousness in that person will decrease dramatically OR you’ll be put into a position of a persecutor. That’s because when someone’s complaining, they’re in victim mode, unconsciously inviting you to adopt a rescuer position (“yes, omg! what, no, I can’t believe he said that what an ass!!!” aka boohoo poor you yes, you’ve nothing to do with this and other people wrong you all the time - I agree with you, you’re powerless). role is associated with helplessness and hopelessness. Someone else is always to blame for their circumstances. They can’t make decisions, solve problems and “could” potentially change but it’s outside of their control. Victims gravitate towards Rescuers and blame Persecutors. The victim is a version of saviour aka let me save you from yourself and the baddies of the world. There are always “weaker” people they must protect and they take responsibility for saving others. It looks good because it disguises as good intentions but in a healthy adult interaction that’s icky (call your therapist and look into your childhood icky 😁). The rescuer very is “the bad guy” from the POV of victims and rescuers. Sometimes they are just a scapegoat for the other two roles but other times they can actually be harsh, critical, judgemental and place blame without providing guidance or explanation. The persecutor We engage in these roles on a day-to-day level (work, home, friendships) as well as a societal level. Consider where in your life you engage in these roles. P.S. Remember other people are there to annoy you and if things don’t go your way it means they’re going the wrong way. Only talk about yourself. Bonus points if you manage to turn the conversation about you when someone else is sharing their emotions. They need to know you have it worse than them. Find ways to be irritated. Bonus tip - complain as much as you can. I know that data shows we live in the best time in history but that’s BS. Your Amazon package was a day late and you’re not having it. Hate rich people. Better yet, hate anyone who appears more successful than you. Even if you’d believe that we live in the most abundant time in history, there are people richer than you which means you can’t be happy and satisfied with what you have. 4.1. It’s best to only compare yourself with people who have more than you. Forget all the people in developing nations living on $200/month. Find ways to blame others. Luckily there are lots to choose from: your parents, the weather, the government, your genes,  inflation. The more you have to blame, the better. Offend someone and when they call you out, tell them they’re overreacting and being too sensitive. Be moody. Look unhappy, don’t smile and when asked how you are, have at least 2 things you’re dissatisfied with ready to go. Feel entitled. The world owes you everything without you giving back. It’s best to be demanding. Your spouse, friends and family are to give you what you want or else they’re selfish. Child-Parent-Adult ego states In the psychoanalytic theory called Transactional Analysis, the communication we engage in comes from three ego states: Child, Parent or Adult. Healthy interactions are created by Adult to Adult ego states but the Child-Parent or Child-Adult is when the interaction becomes dysfunctional. For example, a person in a Child state might try hard to get praise and be liked by others but this state also has a playful, creative and spontaneous side. A negative side to a Parent is becoming patronising, controlling and critical but it can also reveal an understanding, softer and nurturing side of us. It’s worth mentioning that both Child and Parent ego states have positive negative sides to them. and Similar to the dynamics in the Karpman triangle, we get invited (or invite someone) into one of these ego states. It plays off of emotional attunement - our ability to recognise, understand and engage with another’s emotional state. Let’s say you’re in a meeting where conflict/disagreement arises. You could adopt the Parent role, by being authoritative and judgemental in dealing with conflict or revert to a Child ego state where you blame someone else/circumstances or withdraw from the conversation altogether. A healthy, Adult to Adult interaction would be coming into a meeting with an open mind and interest in finding a mutually acceptable solution. Another example would be being late for work. I might be afraid to be ‘caught’ by my boss and sneak around to avoid them all day (Child-ego state). When the boss finally ‘finds’ me and I start talking about traffic, I invite them to become a Parent and berate me (“Well, leave the house 10 minutes earlier to avoid the traffic then!”). A person in an Adult ego-state would take responsibility for being late and make agreements to show up on time in the future. Even though most of these interactions happen unconsciously, it doesn’t relieve us from responsibility. Where in your life do you adopt one of these states? How could you change your response going forward? Manipulation It’s a broad topic but manipulation is usually aimed at influencing someone for personal aims. It can be good or bad, for example, marketing is a form of manipulation. Pets manipulate. Everyone manipulates to some extent but the ‘bad’ kind of manipulation is when someone wants to control or affect you in a way convenient to them without caring about your well-being. I will share what a nasty form of manipulation looks like: Someone says they don’t want to share/do something. Why won’t you do it? Don’t you trust me? Manipulator: I get a feeling you’re not telling me the truth/withholding information. Trust me, when have I ever lied to you? I think you have some serious trust issues. Manipulator: Someone crosses your boundaries and you let them know. Why so serious? I’m just joking. You’re taking things too seriously. Manipulator: Someone gives unsolicited advice. You: I disagree and didn’t ask for advice. You’re so full of yourself. Manipulator: Someone: This doesn’t feel right to me. Other people appreciate when I do this and something’s wrong with you if you don't. Manipulator: 👇👇👇 Instead of addressing your claim head-on, they deflect and make you question and doubt yourself and your version of reality. Your boundaries are wrong and therefore constantly crossed. Their behaviour cannot be questioned; if it does, you get blamed for misunderstanding it. If they somewhat admit that they crossed the line, it’ll sound something like: I just wanted what’s best for you (they’re the good guy can’t appreciate). you The above is extremely oversimplified. A Fellow Traveller I believe that a well-known anecdote exists to the effect that a young writer, determined to make the commencement of his story forcible and original enough to catch and rivet the attention of the most blasé of editors, penned the following sentence: “ ‘Hell!’ said the Duchess.” Strangely enough, this tale of mine opens in much the same fashion. Only the lady who gave utterance to the exclamation was not a Duchess! It was a day in early June. I had been transacting some business in Paris and was returning by the morning service to London where I was still sharing rooms with my old friend, the Belgian ex-detective, Hercule Poirot. The Calais express was singularly empty—in fact, my own compartment held only one other traveller. I had made a somewhat hurried departure from the hotel and was busy assuring myself that I had duly collected all my traps when the train started. Up till then I had hardly noticed my companion, but I was now violently recalled to the fact of her existence. Jumping up from her seat, she let down the window and stuck her head out, withdrawing it a moment later with the brief and forcible ejaculation “Hell!” Now I am old-fashioned. A woman, I consider, should be womanly. I have no patience with the modern neurotic girl who jazzes from morning to night, smokes like a chimney, and uses language which would make a Billingsgate fishwoman blush! I looked up now, frowning slightly, into a pretty, impudent face, surmounted by a rakish little red hat. A thick cluster of black curls hid each ear. I judged that she was little more than seventeen, but her face was covered with powder, and her lips were quite impossibly scarlet. Nothing abashed, she returned my glance, and executed an expressive grimace. “Dear me, we’ve shocked the kind gentleman!” she observed to an imaginary audience. “I apologize for my language! Most unladylike, and all that, but Oh, Lord, there’s reason enough for it! Do you know I’ve lost my only sister?” “Really?” I said politely. “How unfortunate.” “He disapproves!” remarked the lady. “He disapproves utterly—of me, and my sister—which last is unfair, because he hasn’t seen her!” I opened my mouth, but she forestalled me. “Say no more! Nobody loves me! I shall go into the garden and eat worms! Boohoo! I am crushed!” She buried herself behind a large comic French paper. In a minute or two I saw her eyes stealthily peeping at me over the top. In spite of myself I could not help smiling, and in a minute she had tossed the paper aside, and had burst into a merry peal of laughter. “I knew you weren’t such a mutt as you looked,” she cried. Her laughter was so infectious that I could not help joining in, though I hardly cared for the word “mutt.” The girl was certainly all that I most disliked, but that was no reason why I should make myself ridiculous by my attitude. I prepared to unbend. After all, she was decidedly pretty. … “There! Now we’re friends!” declared the minx. “Say you’re sorry about my sister—” “I am desolated!” “That’s a good boy!” “Let me finish. I was going to add that, although I am desolated, I can manage to put up with her absence very well.” I made a little bow. But this most unaccountable of damsels frowned and shook her head. “Cut it out. I prefer the ‘dignified disapproval’ stunt. Oh, your face! ‘Not one of us,’ it said. And you were right there—though, mind you, it’s pretty hard to tell nowadays. It’s not every one who can distinguish between a demi and a duchess. There now, I believe I’ve shocked you again! You’ve been dug out of the backwoods, you have. Not that I mind that. We could do with a few more of your sort. I just hate a fellow who gets fresh. It makes me mad.” She shook her head vigorously. “What are you like when you’re mad?” I inquired with a smile. “A regular little devil! Don’t care what I say, or what I do, either! I nearly did a chap in once. Yes, really. He’d have deserved it too. Italian blood I’ve got. I shall get into trouble one of these days.” “Well,” I begged, “don’t get mad with me.” “I shan’t. I like you—did the first moment I set eyes on you. But you looked so disapproving that I never thought we should make friends.” “Well, we have. Tell me something about yourself.” “I’m an actress. No—not the kind you’re thinking of, lunching at the Savoy covered with jewellery, and with their photograph in every paper saying how much they love Madame So and So’s face cream. I’ve been on the boards since I was a kid of six—tumbling.” “I beg your pardon,” I said puzzled. “Haven’t you seen child acrobats?” “Oh, I understand.” “I’m American born, but I’ve spent most of my life in England. We got a new show now—” “We?” “My sister and I. Sort of song and dance, and a bit of patter, and a dash of the old business thrown in. It’s quite a new idea, and it hits them every time. There’s to be money in it—” My new acquaintance leaned forward, and discoursed volubly, a great many of her terms being quite unintelligible to me. Yet I found myself evincing an increasing interest in her. She seemed such a curious mixture of child and woman. Though perfectly worldly-wise, and able, as she expressed it, to take care of herself, there was yet something curiously ingenuous in her single-minded attitude towards life, and her whole-hearted determination to “make good.” This glimpse of a world unknown to me was not without its charm, and I enjoyed seeing her vivid little face light up as she talked. We passed through Amiens. The name awakened many memories. My companion seemed to have an intuitive knowledge of what was in my mind. “Thinking of the War?” I nodded. “You were through it, I suppose?” “Pretty well. I was wounded once, and after the Somme they invalided me out altogether. I had a half fledged Army job for a bit. I’m a sort of private secretary now to an M. P.” “My! That’s brainy!” “No, it isn’t. There’s really awfully little to do. Usually a couple of hours every day sees me through. It’s dull work too. In fact, I don’t know what I should do if I hadn’t got something to fall back upon.” “Don’t say you collect bugs!” “No. I share rooms with a very interesting man. He’s a Belgian—an ex-detective. He’s set up as a private detective in London, and he’s doing extraordinarily well. He’s really a very marvellous little man. Time and again he has proved to be right where the official police have failed.” My companion listened with widening eyes. “Isn’t that interesting, now? I just adore crime. I go to all the mysteries on the movies. And when there’s a murder on I just devour the papers.” “Do you remember the Styles Case?” I asked. “Let me see, was that the old lady who was poisoned? Somewhere down in Essex?” I nodded. “That was Poirot’s first big case. Undoubtedly, but for him, the murderer would have escaped scot-free. It was a most wonderful bit of detective work.” Warming to my subject, I ran over the heads of the affair, working up to the triumphant and unexpected dénouement. The girl listened spellbound. In fact, we were so absorbed that the train drew into Calais station before we realized it. “My goodness gracious me!” cried my companion. “Where’s my powder-puff?” She proceeded to bedaub her face liberally, and then applied a stick of lip salve to her lips, observing the effect in a small pocket glass, and betraying not the faintest sign of self-consciousness. “I say,” I hesitated. “I dare say it’s cheek on my part, but why do all that sort of thing?” The girl paused in her operations, and stared at me with undisguised surprise. “It isn’t as though you weren’t so pretty that you can afford to do without it,” I said stammeringly. “My dear boy! I’ve got to do it. All the girls do.
