They had a negative breaking headline every other week, centered around issues of privacy, social engineering, and national security. The reason for this is the decade long dissemination of content without any regulation under the legal construct for a platform. By not acknowledging itself as a media company they evaded all the rules that come along with it. Just think, would content flow with such irreverence on any other traditional media platform, and that too without any editorial oversight? Even now the reason for the outrage is because half of the country was pissed at the election result. From now on, one half will always be pissed off at Facebook, but which half will that be might change, or worse might be controlled. The outrage is guaranteed but the change is not. The deeper structure reveals here is how these bubbles of information are formed. How the internet which is supposed to be an intellectual utopia with a vast abundance of knowledge has now just reduced to serve the most relevant ad; how you are suggested to watch the hippest TV show because you made the mistake of watching a hip show before (you can replace hip with original ); how you are suggested the same and same videos or news links to reinforce your pattern. The amazing job done by collaborating filtering algorithms on Netflix, Google, Amazon, and Facebook is just the start of AI and we are no way closer to the singularity. But there is already a critical flaw with this algorithmic intelligence, in a qualitative sense. The flaw is "Reduce everyone to one". It means millions of people are being reduced to a couple of persons (or a couple of groups) in theory, making individuals more of the same and more predictable. If everyone watched the same Netflix shows, buys the same stuff from Amazon, listens to the same songs on Spotify the idea of an individual personality will end. What will remain is a which you as an individual will belong to. ‘group personality’ The biggest side effect coming from the reduction to a group personality is individuals losing their creativity or not forming their personalities that would have otherwise been formed. Not being exposed to cultures, content, product & news that would otherwise change you or make you a more creative being. This is the result of a "push life". We as individuals have become for the recommendation algorithms. pushovers YouTube will push you to watch the next video, Netflix will push you the next episode to watch, Spotify will PUSH you the songs to listen (the modern version of billboard 50 but for your group). Once you start watching Fox News or MSNBC, Google will only push news from those sources on your android mobile. Combine all of this with the blatant use of the literal push notification is basically taking control of your attention — whatever that is left of it. The pushover life is simple, easy, pleasurable, and non-creative, but most importantly very profitable for the companies pushing it. The push life will never allow you to reach your true potential as an individual genetic combination, capable of something uniquely creative. You will never discover that author that would have changed your life, you will never actually become you. But this cycle can be broken, only if you choose to. You can move to the pull life. In pull life, you watch a video not because YouTube suggested it but you were curious about something. You buy something not because its bundled by Amazon but you need something and has been lingering on your mind for a while, you watch a new TV show because you got to know it’s directed by your favorite director. You listen to your next song because you heard it on your Uber ride or because some friend sent you. This means you will not immediately watch the next stranger things on Netflix. This means you might not watch the most trending video on YouTube. This means you will not read the most trending book on Amazon. But this will mean you will let your mind roam free and listen to or watch or buy stuff or read because of your own interest and not because it’s the closest match of your collaborative filtering group done on a cloud service. Dropbox Before we go any further let me say that in this case you are probably safe even if you did. This is because Dropbox carefully encrypted your password. But treat this as a fire-drill because this is not always the case. . and one of them belonged to a Dropbox employee who had used the same username and password inside the Dropbox company network. Dropbox was hacked as a result of an earlier hack on LinkedIn The LinkedIn passwords were not all securely encrypted that password which was used to get into the Dropbox network Now I’m about to explain to you in very simple terms how a website encrypts your password and why it makes a difference when you use a strong one. Are you listening? Good then I shall begin. So this is the big problem. People use the same passwords everywhere. Which means when there is a data breach like this, the passwords can often be used elsewhere (like the LinkedIn ones were). And what hackers do when millions of passwords get hacked is to try them en-masse against interesting sites where they can make money, like and Apple and Paypal. Or use them to hack into company networks like Dropbox. Or yours. Amazon If you used different passwords everywhere then all they’ve got access to is the original site that was hacked. But if you don’t then all of a sudden your Apple, Amazon and Paypal accounts are all hacked too. All because one employee in Silicon Valley used the same password at two websites. Scary huh? How a website secures your your password When you sign up to a website and set a password, the site stores that password so it can check it next time you come back. This happens in one of three ways: It stores it without encryption (very bad) This is a just like writing it down in a spreadsheet with no password protection. This is super insecure as when someone gets access to the spreadsheet they literally get your password. There are plenty of old or budget sites that still do this so always expect the worst. The hacker doesn’t need to do anything to decrypt your password. They just find them and then sell them on the darkweb to people who will monetise them. It encrypts it using a simple form of encryption (better) This is one step better. Your password is now encrypted which makes it hard to see what the original was. Encryption is hard to undo and computationally expensive. Well except not so much now… That used to be the case until one day some dude said — hey, why don’t I encrypt ALL OF THE WORDS and then I’ll have a big table of words + encrypted_words. I don’t need to bother decrypting a password any more I just look up the encrypted version and see what the original was. This is what’s called a rainbow table. A rainbow table showing the encrypted password (hash) and the original version (clear) These rainbow tables list all common words and passwords along with their encrypted versions and then let someone look them up the other way around. So let’s say you’re a hacker and you’ve got yourself the encrypted version of a password: d0763edaa9d9bd2a9516280e9044d885. All you need to do is take that and go to a site like where you can paste it in (try it it works) and it’ll look it up and tell you what the original password was. That’s the encrypted version of the word . Crackstation monkey You found me It encrypts it using a salt (best) Rainbow tables don’t cover all of the possible letter and number strings in the world — it would just be too hard to do and take too much computing power (and would also be impossible). So they have to do only a limited selection of letter and number combinations — like all words or phrases. The reason rainbow tables work is that most people use simple passwords. And many people use AWFUL passwords. : The top 10 passwords of 2015 were 1. 1234562. password3. 123456784. qwerty5. 123456. 1234567897. football8. 12349. 123456710. baseball ( was down six at #18) monkey Now remember a rainbow table is made by going through a list of passwords, encrypting them in advance (time consuming) so they can be looked up (quickly) later. However there isn’t the computing power or the disk space to create a table of all possible number and letter combinations. So a rainbow table only covers the spectrum of passwords the originator had the budget to encrypt. The next step up in making your password less hackable is to make it less likely that the rainbow table will contain it. You do that by making using a longer or less common password (I’m sorry but ?). Or… the website can do this for you. They do this by generating a big fat random letter/number combination and stick it on the end of your password for you before they use it. football Every time you create a password at a website that does this, the site will also create a random string for you — say 51dc30ddc473d4. It then adds that string to your password so it becomes monkey51dc30ddc473d4 and then it encrypts it. When you next log in it does the same thing again. It takes the password you submitted, “monkey” and adds it to the salt (which it stores separately), “51dc30ddc473d4” , encrypts the combination of the two of them and checks the result against the stored, encrypted version. If it matches the site lets you in. : monkey : 51dc30ddc473d4 monkey51dc30ddc473d4**Encrypted version** 11EC055CD41848A7D684E104525C8439 Your password Salt Password and salt: Now try entering this at . It won’t find it. Because the dude who created the rainbow tables didn’t originally try encrypting because that would have just been too expensive (literally a lot of computing cost). Crackstation monkey51dc30ddc473d4 So the point of this is that it basically makes it too expensive to generate a lookup table that will let you unwind the password/salt combo (remember computers may be fast but they cost money). For the love of god use a password manager The long and short of all of this is that when a big site gets hacked and passwords get released, hackers can unwind those encrypted passwords to get the originals. And then they try them at all the other big sites. So if you were part of the LinkedIn hack and used the same password at Amazon a hacker is going to be able to use your LinkedIn username/password to get into your amazon account. I would say you should consider getting a password manager. And if you don’t then you’re putting your head in the sand deeper than a Trump-voting Brexiter. So stop queueing up to buy Nigel a pint at the bar, shake the sand out of your toupé and pay attention for a minute. But you shouldn’t consider it. That way when one website gets hacked it’s firewalled from all of your other website accounts. So Dropbox got hacked

Insider threats are a problem as old as time. So, why are we still not so great at dealing with them? Or more to the point, why does the security industry not seem to be nearly as developed in its methodology when it comes to identifying these insiders? At least, in relation to how frameworks have been created for other areas of security. So, when MITRE’s Chief Scientist for Insider Threats Capabilities Dr. Deanna Caputo spoke about the launch of a new framework for insider threats in a , it brought up more than a few questions about where we are headed. recent interview Not Enough Is Known About Insider Threats Speaking to Dr. Caputo, the first point that stuck out was that this new framework was not replacing a previous one. It was the first of its kind to address a growing concern. Insider threats have been on the rise for a while. In 2023, the Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) found that insiders were responsible for 19% of incidents. But long before this report, in 2018, the team at MITRE received a request from a large financial organization to start compiling data about insider threats to create a framework that will help defenders do a better job of catching them. Dr. Caputo notes that there is plenty of research out there on insider threats, focused primarily on the technical or psychological components of the issue. But much of what we know about incidents is based on anecdotal cases and are not really data-driven. “We have great sensoring, meaning we can see everything you do on your computer,” she says, noting the expansion of tools available now for detecting risk factors being adopted by security teams. “But that doesn't mean we know what the risk or even the threat looks like. So we're finding them but kind of tripping over them when it’s too late. Instead, we want to find them before the big harm has been done. And the data is out there.” Unfortunately though, this data was not being collected and analyzed in a single project where it could be operationalized. This is where Dr. Caputo and her team understood that they could play a role in creating a framework that would look at the full range of risk factors and actions to provide security teams with a better approach to tackling the problem. After some delays from Covid, late last year Dr. Caputo’s team restarted their outreach to the industry to have them confidentially send in their confirmed insider threat incidents for them to study. This included both cases of malicious actors as well as those unintentional actions which could be classified as errors on the part of insiders. Addressing the Demand for a Framework From Insider Threat Professionals While collecting data for problem-solving is generally a good thing, the question of who exactly this framework is meant to serve was a bit puzzling. After all, we already have MITRE’s ATT&CK and D3FEND frameworks. So why are they making another one? Dr. Caputo answers that as the insider threat space matures, there is a need for a framework that organizations can use as a benchmark for how they are dealing with the challenges. “Executives are expecting them to see things but the problem is that the signs are not obvious enough,” she says. There is also a considerable need for direction when it comes to how to prioritize indicators in assessing insider threats. She points to the fact that many organizations now have a dedicated person whose role is specifically to handle insider threats as a positive development. This is important because it is not just individuals from infosec, the SOC, or HR she says, noting though, that this is a team sport. The idea is instead to have someone who sees the whole picture across every component of the threat picture and can really connect the dots. And that requires taking an approach that takes all the factors into account and questions some of our old assumptions about what an insider threat looks like. Taking a Holistic Approach to Insider Threats Along with the attempt to become a central repository for insider threat data, Dr. Caputo says that her team is looking to make this research different by collecting both the technical cyber data as well as many of the more human psychological factors. Catching insider threats is a fairly difficult endeavor. She makes the point that identifying the risk is not necessarily from any one action or even rule-breaking. Moreover, unlike a ransomware attack or terrorism, there is no “boom” moment where we know that the attack has occurred. A smart malicious actor will keep their head down and do what they need to in order to steal information over the long run without getting caught. If we are only looking at specific actions through our own silos of visibility, then we are probably going to miss significant signals. Part of the work means reassessing misconceptions. “We spend too much time on bad things happening in people's lives and we don't account for the risk that good things cause,” says Dr. Caputo. “Humans are never perfect and our judgment is degraded by a lot of things like lack of sleep, fatigue, stress, but stress is good and bad. So the stress of getting married, the stress of buying a house, the stress of having small children all have the equal impact on your decision making. Even though they're very happy things.” “I think programs are slowly starting to see that we're not just waiting for bad things that happen to our employees,” she says, explaining that, “We need just to account for their whole being, which might mean that good things are overwhelming them. And that sounds so odd. But it's true. It's not that something really bad happened and they decided to do bad things. It's just not that simple.” There is also the matter of perspective. Dr. Caputo uses the example of financial factors in insider threat activity. “It’s not about debt,” she says. “The number of insiders for small amounts of money is more about how much that money matters to them. It centers more on how much your debt matters to you and how much do you feel you need to have. Think about financial strain and stress when assessing who is likely to be recruited.” The challenge here though is in how to identify the likely recruits and their associated indicators. “We’ll find more about how to identify it in the framework,” she says. Where Organizations Are Getting it Right The good news says Dr. Caputo is that organizations are getting better at some aspects of the fight against insider threats. Funding for investing both in people and tools appears to be improving, says Dr. Caputo. While there is room for improvement in dealing with issues like false positives and knowing which indicators are the right ones, she says that organizations are doing much better at having more sensors out there for visibility and to collect relevant information. 3 Tips for Improving Your Insider Threat Program Along with the good movement that we are seeing, there is always an opportunity to improve. Dr. Caputo takes a human-centric approach and offers a couple of tips to consider. Don’t Treat Everyone as Negligent “There’s the misconception that if an employee makes a mistake, that's negligence, but that's not right”, says Dr. Caputo. “If we keep talking about them being negligent, all of our human sensors are going to stop caring, or trying.” If we want our employees to be part of a “human firewall” that helps by identifying issues and making the effort to do things right, then avoid treating them like anything less than human adults who will make mistakes here and there. “You have to expect errors and mistakes, genuine human mistakes,” she says. Attackers are Changing Behaviors So Don’t Shame “We get outsmarted a lot and our adversaries are constantly changing their human social engineering,” says Dr Caputo who has begun referring to new methods to trick humans as zero-day social engineering because it resonated with her technical people. Just as you would not shame a technical person for not catching a classic zero-day vulnerability, we need to cut our teams some slack when a clever attacker uses an innovative and new idea to get past our defenses. People Aren’t the Weakest Link, They’re the Missing Link Turning a misconception on its head, Dr. Caputo is a firm believer that your people are your strongest defense. Technology will only get us so far. Think about the phishing emails that make it past the filter as a prime example. When one does, how are we empowering our people to identify it and send it on to security? The same concept holds true for insider threats. Technology will help us pick up tons of valuable signals like exfiltration or accessing sensitive data, but it is often the human referrals of suspicious activity that will help us to fill in the whole picture and identify a threat. How to Get Involved in the Insider Threat Framework At this point, there is no set date for the framework's release. Dr. Caputo hopes that it might be available at the end of 2024, but says that it is a slow process. For now, the focus is on collecting quality data, relying on the early adopters to help them get to some findings. It will need time to improve as more organizations join them and share their data. Dr. Caputo hopes that more organizations will take part in the effort. “No amount of data is too little to participate in this,” she says, adding that, “This can’t be done without help from the community.” The benefits for those who share data is that they will get to see more of the findings sooner, learning more about themselves earlier, having an impact on the way that the framework is shaped. Insider threat leaders can advocate for sharing their data with MITRE, noting how combining efforts can help vendors and customers pool efforts for the community’s advancement in getting better at really understanding insider threat issues. “This gives a way to make more data-driven decisions,” she says. “Don’t underestimate the willingness to have different departments participate because they will see gains as well.”

Yesterday, my four year old came running to me proudly announcing he had crossed level 108 playing Candy Crush. It should have been a proud moment for me, for I never even got past the first few. But it wasn’t. A quick math leads me to believe that he would have spent at least 60 hours of this beautiful little phase of life we call childhood. My father would always be very proud of me for the same thing when I was this young. Heck he would even invite his friends over just to “show uncle how you play that game”. Uncles, would watch in amazement as I would take on each boss in Mario. Some would even ask me to teach their own kids, as they “do nothing else but while away time, playing random games in the streets”. Let’s set this straight, I am not jealous of my son. This is more of a self disappointment. I couldn’t (and probably never will) be able to give him the kind of childhood I had, the one my father gave me. I’m concerned also, as I find my son stuck to products created to make us adults feel good about themselves, maybe take their mind off life’s complexities, to unwind. This is a sort of addiction, to the apps and games designed specifically to snatch from him the period of life we all yearn to go back to. And that’s just the beginning. It is the troubling knowledge of the fact that the people who designed these games understand my son’s better than I do. We are still evolving, so here’s my attempt to figure what the generations to come would look like. It left me nervous. Bulging, myopic sight, tired of focusing on five and a half inch screens. Thumbs as thin as stylus improved over time to click better and faster. Ears incapable of hearing anything not coming through in-ear headphones. Weak bones and body structure from the lack of physical movement. We already have a hard time keeping up with nutrition and healthy diets. I can’t even imagine what it’d be like for them. My son is around a decade away from having any meaningful conversations with the opposite gender. But he has already adopted the selfie culture, they can’t just take a pic with a straight smiling face anymore! Maybe I am just being paranoid, or harsh. It’s thought provoking though, more geeks are coming out now than ever. Thins could even be a good thing. But I call upon, and would kill for an idea, that puts kids back to where they belong — the playgrounds. I announce today that I will personally back and use all my resources to make such a project successful, so it reaches to the masses. Our kids may not be thankful for this today, but they’ll come around, they’re kids after all. An idea, a , a game, anything. Something that will motivate these tiny ones to put their tablets/phones/phablets/screens away and sweat it out in the grounds. So they rely on their food for energy, not on external validation from others. SMS API providers with impacted customers have begun notifying them that this is being caused by a newly required “secondary DCA (Direct Connect Aggregator) vetting”. Software providers registered as Campaign Service Providers (CSPs) with The Campaign Registry (TCR) may have also seen firsthand “DCA2” next to Campaign rejections in the portal, which also refers to this “second DCA vetting”. How Does 10DLC Campaign Vetting Work? When a 10DLC Campaign is submitted to TCR, your API provider, AKA Connectivity Partner (CNP), pushes that Campaign upstream for DCA review. There are three major DCAs managing 10DLC messaging in North America. The DCA that your CNP is partnered with is the one that will vet your Campaigns. Once received, the DCA will manually review each Campaign to ensure they are compliant with Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) and mobile carrier guidelines. Some of the compliance requirements may vary depending on the DCA, so it’s important that your CNP/API provider keeps you informed and provides guidance around any changes.
