Proxy servers are becoming more and more necessary as websites implement rate limiting and more sophisticated restrictions to prevent automated access. Sometimes, for good reasons, though often it’s to protect their commercial interests or monopolize data. Proxies won’t solve all your problems; but aside from basic hygiene, such as using realistic user-agents, they’re the most effective way to keep your web scraper running. This guide will give you a strong understanding of proxy servers in the context of web scraping. It comes with theoretical knowledge together with some practical data we collected for our annual . proxy market research First things first: you most likely don’t want to use free proxies When web scrapers (the people) encounter a need for proxies, their first impulse is to try out a free proxy list. These lists are publicly available online; most of the proxies in them come from vulnerable or mismanaged servers. One big problem with free proxy lists is that you never know who runs them. The operator may have malicious intentions, which can manifest in ad injection, traffic logging, and other nasty things. This sounds scary, but it’s unlikely to affect you much as a data scientist: you probably won’t configure proxies on the operating system level or use them to access your bank account. A more boring — though realistic — issue is that free proxies are simply unreliable. They rarely stay online for long; the ones that do run are unbearably slow because they have hundreds of tenants; and because they have hundreds of tenants, such proxies very quickly strike themselves out with any relevant website. Not a great tool to work with. For this reason, I strongly recommend paying for a commercial proxy service. Types of proxy servers out there Proxy servers are most often categorized by the IP source. For web scraping purposes, you’ll most likely choose between three types: datacenter, residential, or ISP (also called static residential) proxies. Datacenter proxies These proxies are hosted on servers in data centers. They can be instances of Amazon Cloud Services (AWS) or come from any other cloud hosting provider. IP databases see datacenter proxies as belonging to or ranges. hosting datacenter Datacenter proxies typically run on powerful hardware and internet connection, so you can scrape a lot of data fast. They can be a very efficient choice for targets that don’t monitor IP reputation but struggle with websites that do. Residential proxies These proxies come from the residential devices of real people (hence the name). For example, they can run on a Windows laptop, Android phone, or a smart fridge on Wi-Fi. IP databases classify residential proxies as or connections. landline mobile Residential proxies always come in large pools of addresses from around the world. They’re less predictable than datacenter IPs because they rely on the connection quality and availability of the host device. However, this very feature makes residential proxies very effective with all kinds of websites, as they look like regular visitors. ISP proxies These proxies are hosted on servers in data centers registered under consumer internet service providers like Verizon. This is achieved by signing a contract with an ISP and getting it to announce IPs on its network. Ideally, IP databases should identify such proxies as or connections. Sometimes, though, smaller regional ISPs are still classified as data centers. but landline mobile ISP proxies retain the qualities of datacenter proxies but are able to scrape more effectively due to a better IP reputation. How proxies are sourced and whether they’re legal At this point, you may be thinking, “Woah, wait a minute! Android phones? Sounds awfully like a botnet! Is that even legal?” This is a good question to ask, and it shows that you care. Many don’t. The fact is that there’s a fine line between a commercial proxy server and a botnet. It applies less to datacenter proxies where the supply chain is pretty much clear: a cloud host buys IPs, puts them on a server, and rents the addresses to a proxy provider. But the question of ethics becomes very relevant with residential proxy networks. Without delving too deep into the topic, residential proxies can be sourced in several ways. The most popular method is via SDKs in desktop and mobile applications. gives concrete examples of what that looks like. Proxy server configurations Proxy servers may have different configurations based on and . tenancy rotation The first criterion describes how many people can use the same proxy server at once. All free proxy lists have potentially hundreds of tenants, while commercial proxy providers impose limits. It automatically routes your requests through different addresses in the backend. Even when an IP address changes, the endpoint remains the same. Rotating proxies are very convenient for web scraping, as you get access to an effectively infinite number of IPs (thousands to millions). However, such services often charge for traffic expenditure, while static proxy lists tend to offer unlimited traffic. Comparing the different proxy types Let’s compare the discussed proxy types based on their various characteristics. Affordability In the case of rotating proxy networks, residential proxies cost around eight to 10 times more than datacenter addresses and a little less than rotating ISP proxy networks. Static proxy networks usually charge per IP address. Compared to ISP proxies, datacenter proxy servers cost two to three times less, depending on how much you buy. Infrastructure performance Despite routing traffic through unpredictable end-user devices, major residential proxy networks work very well. For web scraping purposes (when the IP rotates with each connection request), they transfer data almost as well as datacenter proxies: We also failed to see a big difference in latency. Below are response times for requests made to the nearest server of a global CDN (the response size is several kilobytes) and Amazon (around 1 MB response size): One area where datacenter and ISP proxies dominate is throughput. They have wider pipes for transferring data. Some residential proxies can be very fast, but you can just as well encounter servers that fail to reach 1 Mbps. There’s much less predictability. IP Uptime Datacenter and ISP proxies can stay up nearly 24/7, going offline only when an outage or maintenance occurs. The uptime of a residential proxy depends on various factors, such as whether it comes from a Windows or Android device. In any case, it’s much shorter and less dependable compared to server-based proxies. We wrote a script that pinged an IP database every 20 seconds to see how often a residential IP address would change. Here are some results: 43 seconds IP #1: Over an hour IP #2: 3 minutes, 33 seconds IP #3: 8 minutes, 31 seconds IP #4: Over an hour IP #5: Scraping effectiveness Datacenter proxies struggle against protected or highly popular websites like Google or social media. This can be somewhat mitigated by choosing dedicated IPs with a cleaner usage history. Sometimes, connecting from a datacenter IP range is enough for websites not to let you in. In such cases, the only recourse is to use a different proxy type. ISP proxies have a better IP reputation by default, so they face less initial scrutiny. However, they still have less realistic browsing patterns compared to a true residential address. Residential proxy servers form large pools, are very diverse, and share browsing history with real people. These qualities make them very hard to distinguish from the website’s broader audience. Location variety Datacenter and ISP proxies are hosted in data centers, and the number of available datacenters is limited. The most frequent location is probably Ashburn, though major providers can get you datacenter IPs from dozens of countries. However, if you need addresses in smaller locales, and especially their non-capital cities, you’ll be out of luck. Residential proxies have no such restrictions — as long as there’s a device and a willing participant, anyone from anywhere can join. Consequently, major providers can offer IPs in all countries with city, ASN, and sometimes even ZIP code targeting. Popularity Based on our survey of major proxy providers, most chose residential proxies as their most popular product. Only two providers specified datacenter proxy servers, and none ISP proxies. Datacenter proxies have been falling off in recent years, as major targets like Amazon, Google, LinkedIn, and others tightened their security systems. ISP proxies have the capacity to take their place, but their uptake is hindered by sourcing difficulties — it’s hard to get reputable ISPs onboard. The Discovery Phase of a Project: A Practical Guide

Image Credits: Courtesy Robert Carter The current NFT ecosystem is the digital wild, wild West... and I have my scars to show for it. I'm a survivor of 6 NFT projects that were rug pulls. Fortunately, one of them was "derugged" by the community. We took over, hired a de-rugging expert who drew a 6-month strategy, redesigned the artwork, airdropped better artwork to every verified owner, made a comeback, and became profitable. But first what’s rug pull? What is a Rug Pull? In the NFT Space, a rug pull happens when the following things happen: Hype is built around an NFT project It sells out Gets abandoned by the project founders They disappear with the money. Now that you know where the inspiration for this article comes from and what a rug pull is, these are some questions you need to ask. The answers will signal to you if any NFT project that is about to launch is a likely rug pull or not. Are the Founders Doxxed and Engaging with the Community Well? All rug pullers are anonymous and to be doxed is to reveal your identity. They also fear human engagement. They always try to avoid being in the chats. Doing this means they are accessible and making themselves too available will lead to questions, demands for AMAs (Ask Me Anything), voice chats in discord etc. They recognize two things: One, there is a high risk of vulnerability in asking them questions. Two, they don't want to be seen as dodging these questions - so, they stay away. When project founders are visibly inactive in general chats, they will claim they're in the announcements that they're "busy" on the project. Don't fall for that. Every legitimate NFT project founder-owner has a detailed plan and structure in place that is highly developed around the community. So, they know they must make time to hop into chats on discord, do AMAs on Twitter, and so on. They know the community is the key to the success of the project and the community always has questions... many of them. Have the Founders Invested Some Personal Funds into the NFT Project? Do they have a quality website dedicated to the project? Is it a quality website? Is the copy professionally written in correct English? Websites are important to a project. Projects without a website prior to minting, are very likely to rug. Projects with a poorly designed website and crappy copy are a sign of a rush to quickly grab money. From my experience on NFT projects (on Cardano, Solana, and Ethereum), I have come to find the hard way that creating websites for projects is a thoughtful investment of time and financial resources. It demands a lot of mental energy and focus, copywriting. It's also the easiest way for any outsider to see whether the founders know what they're doing or not. Every worthwhile company on this planet has a website, especially as we're heading into Web 3.0. So, remember, every PFP NFT project is like a start-up and when you're (Do Your Own Research) on these projects understand that they’re looking to generate hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. DYOR-ing Therefore, a website is a MUST.  And it must be professionally designed with good copy and links to all their socials. I will always pick a new project with a well-designed website without an artwork collection yet, over one without a website and a complete collection. Does the NFT Project Have a Proof of Concept? This is almost self-explanatory. Every project promises to do something. First, if you see promises like to , get ready to run. Are you saying you’re coming to potentially raise a few hundred thousand to several million dollars and you don’t know what “utility to provide?” “To provide utilities that will benefit the community as we grow” Ask about their vision, read their roadmap and whitepaper and ask questions! If they say they're going to do certain things after mint on their roadmap, ask for receipts they have ready as proof of making payments for those things. For instance, if they say, "we're building a game"? Ask for the cost, name of the game development company they're hiring, and why. If they mention “tokenomics”? Ask about the liquidity pool, the percentage of funds to be allocated to all stakeholders, the community wallet, the amount going in, the utilities, etc. If they say, . Great "we're making merch" Ask for the name of the merchandiser they've agreed to use and why. If they say, "we're going to build a community"? Ask them what their plans are to make their community different. Simple? Maybe not but know that once they get hold of that money, they make the rules. Have They Stated The Supply & Price Upfront? Credible NFT projects about to launch state their supply and their price, simple. Any project that does not after a few weeks should keep you on high alert. Why should the supply and price of a project say "TBA" for a prolonged time? Some even go to say "TBD" (To Be Announced) (To Be Decided) Either of these options is a massive sign that the project founders are most likely in it for the money alone. A clear sign a rug pull is coming. Why, you may wonder? Well, they are basically sampling how much hype the project can garner before they set their supply and price. See it this way, once price and supply are out there, they have limited themselves to how much they could easily have made. Here's what I mean by this: a shady project won't announce they have a 5,000 supply with a 1.0 SOL mint price early, for example. This is because they know that if they wait long enough and can sell a massive hype, many people will flock to their community. And based on the number of people, they can potentially list at a higher supply and or price. Long-term projects always have their supply and price decided before ever going public. This lets them get to work on the community size required to raise the funding needed for the future. Supply and Price are numbers the community needs to know right from the scratch. Is their Branding Original? Imitation is the ultimate form of flattery, not outright cloning! For instance, are a successful NFT project on Solana. Cets on Creck In the last few weeks, at least 7 NFT projects have copied the style of their logo to the point that you know exactly who they’re trying to make you think they will be. When a project visibly makes its logo/headers/designs look almost like that of a successful project, run. Do They Have Legit Brand Partnerships Within The NFT Ecosystem? Genuine projects understand that in the NFT ecosystem are other projects that may have launched or getting ready to launch. They also understand that brand partnerships with already successful projects leverage their goodwill and get easy access to their communities. So, they reach out, build relationships, and see if their brands and values align well enough to strike a collaboration or partnership. Potential rug pulls don't have time for this. They also know that partnerships with other founders will require IRL meetings and the signing of documentation. So, when you see a new project affiliating continuously, visibly but unofficially "collaborating" with bigger projects, run. They are sending you subliminal messages that will make you assume that they're collaborating with these guys. It is a major signal that they're going to rug pull. Here is an imaginary example: You see a new, unknown NFT project called Slimey Snails with images of Slimey with a Bored Ape or an Okay Bear and other IPs of successful projects on their Twitter banner. This is a clear sign that they are creating that illusion of collaborating with these successful brands. It is designed to create an emotional attraction in the minds of the community members of these projects so they can support the project. Slimey Snail No such collaboration exists officially or unofficially. They're just using the success of other projects for their own benefit. They don't care that they are destroying future collaborations because frankly, there is no future because once they “grab the bags”, they're gone. I hope you can see through this market manipulation. Another red flag is that they hardly associate with the smaller not as successful projects. Once they can get people to believe the illusion that is the "the next BAYC", or "the next Okay Bears", they know they stand a chance of rug pulling a lot more people. Slimey Snail To easily see genius of this tactic, combine it with the delayed announcement supply & price and it becomes clearer. Don't fall for it. Is There Room for Follower/Community Growth? If a project has an insane number of followers on Twitter and in discord in a short period of time, pre-mint, get ready to run. It can mean they are using bots, or they are purely using their marketing budget for selling hype. This shows no long-term vision whatsoever. If has 250,000+ followers on Twitter and another 100,000+ on discord pre-mint, what room are they leaving themselves to grow after they sell out? Slimey Snail None. And that's because they don't plan to be here post-mint. Growth is important, YES! But reaching heights that normally ought to be gotten to gradually through community engagement, hard work, gradually execution of the roadmap and marketing in a few weeks is a red flag and a sign of doing spammy giveaways and using bots. Collaborative giveaways are great, but they should also be strategically done if you're here for the long term. They are more effective with established communities and bigger, sold-out projects than with those who haven't minted yet. Others Not every failed NFT project is a rug pull. Sometimes, projects don’t sell out and need to cut supply. Cutting supply means less funds and that means the roadmap will be difficult to implement. What happens after that? If the project does not sell out, what's their plan to refund the community? Concerning revealing their identity: If the founders are UNDOXXED, what legitimate reason did they give? Concerning minting: What plans have they for a seamless minting experience? Are they planning to mint using a launchpad service, and if not, why not? How many tokens can be minted per wallet? What is the ratio of the number of whitelists given to the total supply of tokens? Are they only focusing on present-day trends that won't be relevant in a year from now? Concerning their social media: Are their tweets consistent? Is the engagement rate high relative to the number of followers? If they do not have a website, why not? Is their discord account new, and if so, why not? I really hope these points help you avoid getting the rug pulled. Have a great NFT experience.

Creating a well-thought test strategy is crucial to understanding the overall scope of your project, and what testing approaches, tools and skills are required in order to develop a successful product that provides a great user experience. However, creating a test strategy is a complex task. Every piece of software is unique, and as such, objectives, user expectations, budgets and timelines differ greatly between projects. Identifying key project requirements is a great first step to understand what skills your testing team needs to manage the project and any challenge that may arise along the way successfully. Required technical skills: : Efficient communication is essential for team growth, as well as achieving high quality code. Having frequent and effective communication allows teams to identify defects early and solve them quickly, and improve the understanding of risks and challenges across teams and stakeholders. Defining the communication skills needed for your test team is crucial, and it will depend on the different teams they need to interact with (different providers, vendors, internal teams, etc.), on the type of communications they will need to manage (are they going to report to management? Will they need to prepare documentation for a specific compliance with a standard? etc). Required communication skills K : This is an important metric that measures the time it takes from the definition of a new requirement (new feature or change) until it’s delivered to the final users. Keeping track of this metric provides teams with an overarching picture of the project, and allows them to improve the test strategy to optimize the development pipeline by identifying inefficiencies. Once unnecessary delays have been recognized it’s possible to increase the speed of deployment by choosing better testing approaches and tools that directly support the project. eep an eye on lead time : There are certain quality attributes that every now and then are forgotten and these are: portability, compatibility, usability, reliability, security, maintainability and performancibility (just kidding, performance). We should also consider these characteristics when defining our testing strategy, deciding when we are going to test each, how, who, how frequent, with which tools, etc. Don’t forget the “ilities” Quality: A Shared Responsibility Although test strategies are designed to ultimately improve the quality of software, produce deliverables on time, reduce risks and optimize costs, this doesn’t mean the quality of a product relies solely on the effectiveness of a test strategy or the work of software testers. As we have mentioned before in our blog, quality is not a tester’s responsibility, it is a team’s responsibility and a shared effort across teams. On top of this, the concept of quality is a subjective one, and for those reasons, it’s essential to have a shared understanding of what quality means for your team and your customers. Don’t fall into this trap One of the biggest mistakes is to underestimate the importance of a test strategy, either by believing that only large companies need them, or that they require too many resources to create. Implementing short-term methodologies that don’t serve a long-term test strategy, and using trending testing practices that aren’t actually needed are not beneficial for your project. Effective test strategies are always necessary, and revising them often is also key to successfully achieving the results we seek in our software products. On Creating the Right Test Strategy for Your Project: A Guide from the COO

It is now February 2022, 16 months after launching Lens — The Kubernetes Platform as an open source project. How has the project come so far in such a short time? Lens was built to help developers, operators, and site reliability engineers take control of their Kubernetes clusters like they never imagined. Today, Lens has over 500,000 active users and over 17,000 GitHub stargazers. As a growing community, Lens has become one of the top trending open source projects within the cloud-native ecosystem. It has been adopted by some of the largest companies across the globe and is seeing over 15% month-over-month growth. Growing an open source technology can be challenging for many reasons, from user adoption to building trust within the community, and of course, overall product retention. In this post, I’ll break down the tips and tricks we have used to ensure our open source project’s success within the cloud-native ecosystem. Step One: Understanding the Challenges As Kubernetes users, we understood that Kubernetes has many underlying challenges that individuals and organizations need to overcome for their application modernization initiatives to be successful. Managing Kubernetes means writing code and keeping track of multiple and sets of access details. Keeping track of all of this information and all of these resources becomes especially challenging when working with dozens of Kubernetes clusters. Kubernetes YAML files We identified several underlying challenges when it comes to Kubernetes, including: The technology can be complicated and a burden to learn. Understanding the root cause of errors is increasingly challenging. Individuals / Organizations spend too much time helping users onboard their applications. Users spend too much time switching between browsers, command lines, and documentation. These issues are only the tip of the iceberg, but for the purposes of this blog, I want to emphasize that when you are trying to create something truly extraordinary you must sell the problem you solve, not the product…and before you can do that, you need to have a clear understanding of what that problem is. Once you’ve identified the problem space, you can move on to the next step, which is identifying the value you bring. Step Two: Understand Your Product’s Value Prop As you begin your journey in building an extraordinary product, software, or technology, you need to understand the value prop that you are providing to your end-users or customers. Based on the challenges you have identified, this is where you begin to think of the solution to these challenges. So how do you begin? One great advantage we have in building an open source project that provides value is simply being an end-user. What exactly do I mean by that? Well, it’s quite simple: the majority of individuals who are building an open source project are most likely already experts in the topic at hand. With Lens, most of our engineers and developers already work with Kubernetes on a daily basis, easily identifying the challenges. Lens made their lives easier. Your team should benefit from the open source project you build. If your team cannot benefit from the project, there is a strong possibility your targeted audience won’t either. themselves One feature we implemented for Lens is product telemetry. In our license agreement and source code, we ensure that we are able to collect anonymous user telemetry data that provides insights and highlights our user journey (while giving users the option to opt-out, of course). We leveraged this telemetry data to better understand our user usage patterns, aggregating and analyzing this data to make product roadmap decisions, improvements and to understand why and how our users leverage Lens. Real-time telemetry is by far the most influential data we could leverage; the hard part is digesting and analyzing it appropriately. We also took the opportunity to incorporate real-time surveys that our users can fill out to give us a better understanding of how to position our roadmap moving forward. Leveraging both our telemetry and real-time surveys gave us a clear understanding of how our users are leveraging our technology and how we can improve our product. The main point I want to make here is that it is never easy to identify the true value your product brings to its end users, but there are several channels that you can explore to better understand how your users leverage your product. When building your product, it is essential to implement telemetry to identify the usage patterns of your users. Step Three: Build a Product That Resonates with All End-Users When it comes to adoption, not much has changed. We know that we need to build a tool that is explicitly geared towards our end users. Our audience, specifically developers, operators, and site reliability engineers, all have one thing in common. They want to improve their overall efficiency, when working with Kubernetes. The goal is to eliminate complexity and increase productivity. Every one of our “potential” users has a different level of expertise when working with Kubernetes, which meant we had to focus on building a tool that both experienced and novice Kubernetes users could use daily. This is our third step and one of our most important: creating a product that can resonate with all Kubernetes users, regardless of their experience. I know this might sound cliché, but I can’t overstate how essential it is to understand your targeted end-user. The main point I want to stress here is that your entire targeted audience should have the ability (and desire) to get up and running with the product relatively quickly. The solution, product, or tool should be so easy to use that anyone can become a “power user” with minimum effort (and without having to read documentation). Step Four: Listen to the Community Okay, now for the part you guys all care about: how Lens grew from 0 to 500,000 active users in less than two years. The majority of our growth came with virtually zero PR and without a profound marketing budget. The open source application grew, and continues to grow, primarily from word of mouth. Yes, I said it: word of mouth. I know it’s not the growth hack you were expecting, but Kubernetes developers, operators, and SRE’s currently using our product did the majority of the heavy lifting for us. But that doesn’t mean that we ignored the need to increase user adoption. One of the most important things we did to improve user experience and growth was to enable our community to provide feedback. Due to this opportunity, we have had over 1000 commits with roughly 1200 issues resolved within the first sixteen months of Lens being launched as an open source project — and we are just getting started! We quickly learned that resolving issues in a timely fashion demonstrated our care and respect for our users and the product, resulting in us quickly building trust within the open source cloud-native community. Indeed, to “hack” the system, you need to focus on developing a fantastic product. What do I mean by that? Well, I think author Seth Godin says it best: “Don’t find customers for your products, find products for your customers.” And this is precisely what we did. We put our end user’s biggest challenges first and built a product that anyone within the Kubernetes ecosystem could use. We learned that everything started with the product, so we asked ourselves, “Are we building something extraordinary that our end users would be willing to share with their colleagues?” If the answer to this question is anything but yes, then you have some work to do. When it comes to building something truly extraordinary, you need to focus on understanding everyone that will try or use your product. Do we solve problems, or are we just trying to sell a product? Are we incorporating our user feedback into the solution? Can anyone within the Kubernetes ecosystem use our product? Is our product extraordinary and easy to use? The main point here is that you will never know exactly what it takes to make your product, technology, or software extraordinary. But there are several things you need to do to ensure you are on the correct path. The bullets mentioned above are specific things we kept in mind while building Lens. Scaling an Open Source Project: a Startup Success Story

SpaceX is preparing to deliver high-speed internet to the world by sending about 30 thousand satellites into the Earth's orbit. Elon Musk's company started work on this project in 2018, the project cost is estimated to be around $10 billion
