In March 2024, I returned to Ukraine, purchasing and delivering drones to soldiers on the frontlines and reporting on drone warfare. Unlike the late summer of 2023, when I still felt a sense of optimism from people amid Ukraine’s counteroffensive, I now saw the great pain and sorrow among many Ukrainian soldiers on the frontline. Even if Ukraine were to prevail on the battlefield, would it be a true victory if the greatest Ukrainians who died fighting for a free Ukraine were no longer there to see it? Many soldiers often spoke of the need to continue the fight to avenge their fallen brothers. Ukraine’s future liberation will have been paid with the greatest price: the blood of some of the bravest human beings I have ever met in my life. Ever since the Western media hype surrounding Ukraine’s counteroffensive subsided after the summer of 2023, followed by US aid to Ukraine being stalled in Congress and then the fall of Avdiivka, I have personally seen interest wane from both the American public and the Ukrainian diaspora in the US. Chatter about Ukraine on different volunteer channels to which I belong is getting rarer by the day. This is likely because the most committed volunteers work directly with units now, while others have simply lost interest. When times are most difficult, we must be more vocal and work harder than ever. We cannot rest or let adverse circumstances dispirit us. The soldiers on the frontline have no choice but to fight, and they cannot rest, so people abroad who can make a difference must step up. What greater power and value can one achieve than supplying soldiers with life-saving equipment? My close friends Alina Holovko and Oleksandr Dovhal and I – all three of whom also volunteered with me in Bakhmut while the city was under active Russian siege – continued our work of helping Ukrainian soldiers. Over the years since the full-scale invasion, we have delivered dozens of drones, generators, Starlinks, and medical supplies, among other critical needs. Drones: Eyes in the Sky When I go to Ukraine, upon arriving at the front, I always deliver personal gifts of drones to soldiers. At times, some friends will help purchase drones. Most recently, a close friend from South America bought a $2,000+ DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone, which I took with me. As a South American who previously lived in Ukraine, where some of Russia’s early atrocities occurred at the start of the full-scale invasion, he is more patriotic about Ukraine than many Ukrainians I’ve met in the Ukrainian diaspora abroad. With several pieces of luggage packed with drones, I made my way to Dnipro via train from Poland, changing trains three times over two days of travel. I spent time with drone units on the frontline in both Donetsk Oblast and Zaporizhzhia Oblast. For each unit I visited, I delivered either a DJI Mavic 3 drone or a new attack drone. I later received a message from one soldier that their senior commander was “happy like a little boy” when he saw the new model of attack drone I had given them, as they previously only had older models. The importance of individuals and volunteers sourcing drones for soldiers can’t be understated. A senior Ukrainian military official recently said that Ukraine was holding off Russian advances with “crowdfunded drones” that are primarily being sourced by volunteers and military units themselves. Vasyl Shyshola, a commander in an aerial reconnaissance unit from the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade, also pointed out that it is a necessity for units to have social media. Shyshola said, “If you want to source more drones from people on the internet, having a high-quality social media channel is vital.” The more engaging content that soldiers can capture on the battlefield, such as first-person view (FPV) drones blowing up Russian positions or heavy armor, the more visibility it gets – and, ultimately, donations will flow to buy more drones. Danilo Makarov, a drone pilot from the 108th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, told me that you can no longer fight a battle without having a drone above. The drones that operate in the sky give commanders a complete battlefield view and can guide their men from an aerial perspective. Without a drone above to warn soldiers of enemy movements or to help guide an assault, the soldier is a “dead man walking.” Kostyantyn Mynailenko, a commander of an aerial reconnaissance unit in the Liut (“Fury”) Brigade, said, “We are on the frontline 24/7, and we must have a permanent feed from the front streaming from our drones. The drone visuals must never end.” Liut Brigade The first drone unit that I spent time with was the Liut Brigade, an assault brigade of the National Police of Ukraine. Following Russia’s first invasion in 2014, Ukraine transformed its loyal local police, militias, and volunteers from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts (regions) into special-purpose units, specializing in assault operations. The majority of the men from Liut to whom I spoke were former police officers or police special forces. As Russia advanced into their home regions, they left the occupied territories to fight for Ukraine. I had a chance to sit down with Kostyantyn Mynailenko for an interview at his unit’s base near the front in Donetsk Oblast. Kostyantyn had been fighting in the Ukrainian army for several years before the full-scale invasion. Originally from Sieverodonetsk, which is now occupied by Russia, he took his family at the start of the invasion and evacuated them to safety, but came right back to the fight. “On the opening night of the invasion, we had some Russians roll into the city in heavy armor and we quickly were able to take them prisoners.” Our interview was often interrupted due to a constant stream of phone calls, as emergencies required urgent response on the frontline. I tried asking a variety of questions to elicit any encouraging news from him. The other men in the unit would occasionally add to the conversation, but their faces did not lie and the tone in their voices was all-permeating. It was visible that the war had taken a great toll on them. Although the men of the Liut Brigade have lost many close friends and loved ones throughout the war, their sense of loss and outrage is not confined to their comrades. They speak of Russia’s brutal assault tactics, which require the Ukrainians to gun down waves of Russian soldiers that charge at their positions in meat-grinding warfare. When asked about morale in the Ukrainian army, Kostyantyn looked up at me and said, with sadness in his voice, “We’ve lost many, many guys.” He said that he is not impacted by the news in the West or by what is going on with US aid. “I don’t follow the news closely; it doesn’t interest me that much. I am on the front, and I have my guys to be worried about every day. I am responsible for their lives.” After spending time with the Liut Brigade and doing interviews on drone warfare, we took some photos with the Mavic 3 Pro drone that was gifted to the unit. Since many of the soldiers are from Donbas, they still have relatives living in occupied territories and their identities need to be hidden. If the Russian authorities find out they are soldiers, their relatives in occupied territories can be persecuted. “The West is worried about giving us more weapons because they think if they give us enough weapons to win that we will continue the fight onto Russian territory,” Kostyantyn said. “But why would we care for Russian land? We are only trying to free our own lands. To return what they took from us.” On the procurement of drones, Kostyantyn said, “The Russians have many more drones than us. They have a stable supply chain sourced directly from China. We have to order our Chinese drones from Europe indirectly and then bring them to Ukraine.” He also spoke of the need for some sort of victory to motivate the Ukrainian soldiers. But to make a breakthrough, he said, “We need more support, as they are just focused on defensive operations.” His unit was also involved in the Kharkiv counteroffensive in 2022, but he mentioned how the Ukrainian army ran out of resources to keep the push going, that they had to stop at some point. “We don’t have enough of everything, especially artillery. You feel it on the battlefield, at every moment, how we are outgunned,” emphasized Kostyantyn. When asked about negotiations with Russia, he replied, “What do we have to give them? Drones on the frontlines of Ukraine’s ongoing fight against the Russian incursion have showcased in real-time the unprecedented changes drone warfare brings to the modern battlefield. Emphasis rests on the failure of the West to adapt its drone systems adequately for future combat, analysts warn, explaining that the described failings are overt and damaging over the long term. ‍ Drones and  Power Competition A recent publication from the Wall Street Journal highlighted how American drones have failed to make a significant impact on the battlefield in Ukraine. The piece points out that American drones have failed to “perform in combat” and that this is a bad sign for the Pentagon, “which needs a reliable supply of thousands of small, unmanned aircraft.” The adoption challenges in combat settings extend beyond American weapons systems, stretching to North Atlantic Treaty Organization partners. For example, the Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones, which initially helped Ukraine achieve military successes, especially in the first months of the war, have seen a significant decrease in use as the war has progressed. Rather, Ukraine’s defense forces have turned to the use of China-made drones, a factor that has geopolitical implications for the power competition between the Western-led NATO military alliance and China-aligned nations. A Systemic Weapons System Issue The issue Western-made drone adoption faces in combat has been linked by thought leaders to a systemic issue in the weapons industry. In a recent interview with Emily Chang of Bloomberg, Palmer Lucky, founder of Anduril Industries, warned that American weapons systems have not necessarily adapted to conflicts of the future and are not “necessarily” causing China to “quake in their boots.” Lucky noted that, in his view, a lot of current American weapons systems are quite “bad” and overly “expensive.” Cost-prohibitive systems reflect down to drones, making the induction of drone systems into warfighting strategy fall behind the pace of warfare, which is evolving underneath rapid innovation.  In prolonged, high-intensity conflicts such as the war between Russia and Ukraine, warfighters note strategic shifts directly linked to the rapid introduction of 21st-century technological enhancement. Electronic Warfare As far back as December 2023, The Telegraph noted that Russia's electronic warfare tactics are contributing to its gaining ground against Ukraine. Soldiers are making incremental improvements daily, seeking to gain an advantage over the adversary. The production of drones and their timely deployment to the battlefield are critical. Any significant delay in development risks rendering them obsolete and ineffective by the time they reach the front lines. Drone Costs Changing Dynamics With Russia enhancing its air and electronic defenses, Ukraine has had to adjust its drone strategy accordingly. In an interview with Frontsight media, Norman, a drone unit commander from the 109th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, said that at the start of the war, Ukrainian soldiers were able to deploy drones wherever they wanted. Norman noted that things were disorganized and soldiers could deploy drones, standing anywhere. But now, operations must be highly organized to effectively operate with electronic warfare. This shift has, as the Washington Post noted, seen  “cheap drones” deployed in Ukraine which have subsequently transformed modern warfare — and initially gave Ukrainian troops an advantage on a battlefield where they are perpetually outnumbered and outgunned.” Eyewitness Accounts Dmytro Lysenko, the late drone pilot from the 109th Brigade who died in May fighting on the front in Donetsk Oblast, shared that the most optimal drone has been the Chinese-made DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone. The Mavic 3 is affordable at around $2000-3000 dollars per drone (depending on where it is sourced from), and it has a good set of versatile functions from having a quality camera with a “good zoom” that can be used for reconnaissance to being able to drop explosives. Lysenko shared with Frontsight Media shortly before his death that, at the peak of the battle for Avdiivka, Ukrainian pilots often had to fly over 8 kilometers around the battlefield in order to circle back in to avoid Russia’s electronic warfare systems that would jam the drones. He further pointed out that Ukrainian units often lack drones and are easily lost in battle, sometimes due to jamming or poor weather. The Royal United Services Institute think tank estimated in 2023 that Ukraine was losing around 10,000 drones per month. Drones are considered so precious to Ukrainian soldiers that they will often walk through an active battlefield or even a minefield to try and recover a drone that crashed in the field, eyewitnesses related to Frontsight Media. Braving Minefields For Drones Vasyl Shyshola, a commander of an aerial reconnaissance unit (128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade), explained to Frontsight contributor David Kirichenko, in an analysis written for The Kyiv Post, that he and his men would “often walk through a minefield to try and recover a drone because of how few they have.” Shyshola shared how if Ukrainian soldiers are storming a Russian trench, there is immense pressure on the drone pilot to not make a mistake and lose the drone. “Commanders overseeing a storming of a trench line will be watching the drone feed and giving commands to the soldiers in the middle of the battle,” said Shyshola. If the drone is lost, the soldiers on the ground will be left without guidance and are more or less blind. He further remarked that sometimes the drone unit would not have any more drones in reserve, but if they do, they can quickly redeploy a drone to restore visibility but explained that this is never guaranteed. ‘Drones Over Funding,’ One Operator Prefers When asked about making costly modifications to improve a drone*,* Oleksiy Tymofeev, a drone unit commander from the 108th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade fighting in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, said he would prefer to receive another drone instead of investing money to make expensive modifications because of quantity plays a more important role. “You can make modifications such as adding tech to the drone to have AI software increase the accuracy, but that doesn’t mean it will not easily get lose signal once jammed out there, and the higher costs will make it more painful to lose,” said Oleksiy, in an interview with Frontsight Media. Therefore, he prefers to have multiple drones that are cheaper and that will improve his odds of hitting a target rather than relying on a more expensive drone. Due to Russian jamming, Ukrainian drones will often only be able to move one mile before their screen goes gray and they lose signal. Crowdfunding Multiple units that Frontsight contributor David Kirichenko spoke with on the Eastern and Southern fronts informed him that they get the overwhelming majority of their drones from foundations and volunteers. A top Ukrainian military commander, Lt Col Pavlo Kurylenko, was quoted in the Telegraphstating, “We’re only holding back the Russians with crowdfunded drones.” With drones in such short supply, demand far outstrips supply. Resulting To Psyops For Funding In the "Russia Contingency'' podcast hosted by Mike Kofman and Rob Lee, the hosts pointed out how drones have become such a contingent part of Ukrainian defense strategy that units rely on psyops to procure them if they can’t finance them by other means. Because some units have to crowdfund their drone procurement with help from volunteers and even rely on donations to purchase drones, there's an increased emphasis on producing impressive video footage from drone attacks. This focus on visuals doesn't necessarily correlate with hitting the most strategic targets. Shyshola’s drone unit was more recently formed in the fall of 2023. The group quickly realized that they needed to set up a social media presence to share videos of their strikes to try and raise funds to buy more drones. In the past decade, the tech world has witnessed its fair share of evangelists—those who champion revolutionary technologies, promising to change the world. First, it was the blockchain and Web3 movement, touting the dawn of a decentralized future. Now, it’s artificial intelligence (AI), a field evolving at breakneck speed, with its advocates either touting it as the end-all solution to every problem or sounding alarm bells over its potential for destruction. But there’s a critical distinction between how these evangelists communicate. AI evangelists, especially in the last few years, have leaned towards extremes—either as doomers predicting catastrophic outcomes or hyper-optimists seeing AI as humanity’s salvation. This narrative intensity is alienating for many people, making AI seem more like a future science fiction scenario rather than an immediate and impactful tool. In contrast, blockchain/Web3 evangelists, while occasionally prone to over-promising, largely emphasized ideals of freedom, privacy, and financial decentralization—a more hopeful, if sometimes vague, vision of the future. The irony in all this is that while blockchain's potential has been slow to materialize, AI has already had a massive and measurable impact on industries, economies, and even personal lives. Yet, the communication strategies of AI proponents often obscure this reality, making it easy to dismiss the technology as either too dangerous or too futuristic. My journey in programming began over two decades ago, a time when JavaScript was a far cry from its current state, and developers were primarily focused on Microsoft Internet Explorer. One of my proudest achievements back then was writing a few lines of code that allowed users to add and remove table rows entirely on the client side. We called it Dynamic HTML (DHTML). Many developers today have forgotten about it—or never knew it existed. A few years later, Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) emerged, revolutionizing the way we approached web development. The emergence of AJAX marked a significant shift in web development, transferring more logic from the server to the client, and this shift was not without reason. Client-Side Rendering This shift gained momentum due to two key factors: advancements in the JavaScript language and improvements in browser capabilities. JavaScript modules, for example, have greatly enhanced the separation of concerns, leading to more maintainable code. Meanwhile, the introduction of the Local Storage API has been a game-changer. Client-side rendering brings a host of benefits, with improved responsiveness being the most significant one, greatly enhancing the user experience. Keeping interactions local and avoiding server roundtrips makes the user experience noticeably faster. I mentioned the Local Storage API earlier. Along with Web Workers, it enables offline functionality—something browsers previously couldn't provide. I recall developing with Java Web Start (now OpenWebStart), downloading an application with server connectivity, and marvelling at how it worked offline. At the time, it was one of the few technologies offering this capability. Now, we have similar functionality directly in the browser! Another advantage of migrating logic to the user's machine is reducing server computational load. This not only improves performance but also reduces cloud costs. Some Organizational Insights In parallel with these technical advancements, mobile devices rose to prominence. Many companies split their applications into client web apps and server APIs to adapt. With the advent of native applications, this approach became the norm and is often taken for granted. This separation of concerns has profound implications. Given the rapid pace of client-side technology changes and their growing complexity, it's nearly impossible for a single developer to handle an entire use case from end to end. Consequently, most organizations have split their developers into front-end and backend teams. Each team operates in its domain, moving quickly within that space. But when it comes time to integrate, glitches arise, leading to adjustments, a.k.a., bug fixes. This process can be cumbersome, as it requires identifying where the issue lies and assigning it to the appropriate team. And let's not even get into the blame game that can ensue. This artificial separation between client and server is an unnecessary hurdle for many small to mid-sized organizations. A simple webapp with well-adjusted CSS is often more than sufficient. That is why I'm a big fan of the Vaadin framework. With Vaadin, your developers only need to learn a single technology stack using one programming language and a small set of APIs. Each developer can work on both the backend and the UI, making the process simpler and more cost-effective. Yet, like with microservices, the herd mentality has been strong. The Rise of Server-Side Rendering As with any new technology, early adopters jump on the bandwagon, the technology gains traction, and issues arise over time. Client-side rendering is no different. As more code moved to the client side, some software began to hit the limits of what browsers could handle despite their improvements. Before it could start rendering the page, the browser had to download all necessary assets—primarily JavaScript libraries. To mitigate this, we minified libraries and increased the number of parallel downloads. At one point, we even resorted to creating artificial subdomains because browsers were heavily limited in the number of parallel downloads from a single domain. We developed complex techniques to trick users into thinking the page had loaded quickly, even if it wasn't fully rendered. It involved managing only the visible portion of the page initially and deferring the rest until necessary. Many of these techniques also depend on the browser's engine, which changes frequently. It led to a rise in "cargo cult" programming and black magic in what was supposed to be engineering. Another significant issue was Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Bots that crawl and index pages were designed for a more straightforward Web, where pages were rendered server-side. While Google and others have made strides in improving JavaScript-aware bots, nothing beats server-side rendering for SEO. Finally, server-side rendering improves initial load times and simplifies development organization. We must recognize the benefits that client-side rendering offers, but perhaps the pendulum has swung too far. Is it possible to have the best of both worlds? In some corners of the industry, cooler heads have prevailed, and the term Server-Side Rendering (SSR) has been coined to describe a return to what we've been doing for ages—albeit with some modern enhancements. The idea is to leverage AJAX, JavaScript, and browser improvements without the unnecessary bloat. While many tools are available, I frequently hear about Vue. js and HTMX. A recent search also led me to Alpine.js. And I've long been a proponent of Vaadin. I plan to explore these technologies in this focused series by implementing a small to-do application with each. Here are my requirements: I'll approach this from the perspective of a backend developer.

Many developers today have forgotten about it—or never knew it existed. A few years later, Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) emerged, revolutionizing the way we approached web development. The emergence of AJAX marked a significant shift in web development, transferring more logic from the server to the client, and this shift was not without reason. Client-Side Rendering This shift gained momentum due to two key factors: advancements in the JavaScript language and improvements in browser capabilities. JavaScript modules, for example, have greatly enhanced the separation of concerns, leading to more maintainable code. Meanwhile, the introduction of the Local Storage API has been a game-changer. Client-side rendering brings a host of benefits, with improved responsiveness being the most significant one, greatly enhancing the user experience. Keeping interactions local and avoiding server roundtrips makes the user experience noticeably faster. I mentioned the Local Storage API earlier. Along with Web Workers, it enables offline functionality—something browsers previously couldn't provide. I recall developing with Java Web Start (now OpenWebStart), downloading an application with server connectivity, and marvelling at how it worked offline. At the time, it was one of the few technologies offering this capability. Now, we have similar functionality directly in the browser! Java Web Start Another advantage of migrating logic to the user's machine is reducing server computational load. This not only improves performance but also reduces cloud costs. Some Organizational Insights In parallel with these technical advancements, mobile devices rose to prominence. Many companies split their applications into client web apps and server APIs to adapt. With the advent of native applications, this approach became the norm and is often taken for granted. This separation of concerns has profound implications. Given the rapid pace of client-side technology changes and their growing complexity, it's nearly impossible for a single developer to handle an entire use case from end to end. Consequently, most organizations have split their developers into front-end and backend teams. Each team operates in its domain, moving quickly within that space. But when it comes time to integrate, glitches arise, leading to adjustments, a.k.a. , bug fixes. This process can be cumbersome, as it requires identifying where the issue lies and assigning it to the appropriate team. And let's not even get into the blame game that can ensue. a.k.a. This artificial separation between client and server is an unnecessary hurdle for many small to mid-sized organizations. A simple webapp with well-adjusted CSS is often more than sufficient. That is why I'm a big fan of the Vaadin framework. With Vaadin, your developers only need to learn a single technology stack using one programming language and a small set of APIs. Each developer can work on both the backend and the UI, making the process simpler and more cost-effective. Yet, like with microservices, the herd mentality has been strong. The Rise of Server-Side Rendering As with any new technology, early adopters jump on the bandwagon, the technology gains traction, and issues arise over time. Client-side rendering is no different. As more code moved to the client side, some software began to hit the limits of what browsers could handle despite their improvements. Before it could start rendering the page, the browser had to download all necessary assets—primarily JavaScript libraries. To mitigate this, we minified libraries and increased the number of parallel downloads. At one point, we even resorted to creating artificial subdomains because browsers were heavily limited in the number of parallel downloads from a single domain. We developed complex techniques to trick users into thinking the page had loaded quickly, even if it wasn't fully rendered. It involved managing only the visible portion of the page initially and deferring the rest until necessary. Many of these techniques also depend on the browser's engine, which changes frequently. It led to a rise in "cargo cult" programming and black magic in what was supposed to be engineering. Another significant issue was Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Bots that crawl and index pages were designed for a more straightforward Web, where pages were rendered server-side. While Google and others have made strides in improving JavaScript-aware bots, nothing beats server-side rendering for SEO. Finally, server-side rendering improves initial load times and simplifies development organization. We must recognize the benefits that client-side rendering offers, but perhaps the pendulum has swung too far. Is it possible to have the best of both worlds? In some corners of the industry, cooler heads have prevailed, and the term Server-Side Rendering (SSR) has been coined to describe a return to what we've been doing for ages—albeit with some modern enhancements. The idea is to leverage AJAX, JavaScript, and browser improvements without the unnecessary bloat. While many tools are available, I frequently hear about Vue. js and HTMX . A recent search also led me to Alpine.js . And I've long been a proponent of Vaadin .
