‘This has happened before’: early stage startups and now well-established companies are looking for low-budget tools for getting media coverage amidst the economic downturn and the era of new valuations. Trying to decrease burn rate, startups are jumping from one paid channel to another aiming to report growing numbers to their VCs. However, PR with media coverage and organic traffic it provides is still the most effective, however one of the most difficult approaches to master. Cutting the marketing budget entirely and hiring a PR manager (which could also be a costly and fun adventure if you don’t understand how PR works and what to expect) is not an option, but knowing some PR tricks will help in getting media coverage prior to your next fundraising. In my previous op-ed basic PR mechanics and such tech solutions as Linguix, HARO and PRGuy which are still useful low-budget but very decent alternatives to create and land a pitch. we talked about In this article, let’s find out what new and cool AI-powered tools are available to help out a busy-with-fundraising founder and their PRs. AI-powered Pitch Creation Assistants Except ChatGPT there are plenty of NLP tools available, such as Copi.ai, Jasper, and their alternatives. While they can provide some inspiration and really help with SEO-optimized blogging and social media posts by saving your time, they are completely unreliable in terms of preparing a media pitch or press release (yes, this is not the same). “ChatGPT may not always be accurate”, Mira Murati, OpenAI's CTO said in an interview with Time magazine. In other words, the service is notorious for making up facts and quotes. Even though this could be used as an example where you can put some stats and your thoughts on the matter, there is a chance you can miss such parts and send faked numbers or references. Today not any of those platforms is capable of producing complex, nuanced content with comprehensive market and competitor analysis, which is a must when you pitch a tech or business journalist. Mostly all of them generate content using pre-existing templates, which may result in content that is not entirely original. Pricing-wise, usually these platforms are subscription-based that can be expensive for small businesses. However, if you need just one pitch or press-release, some of them do provide freemium models with 5-10 posts per day creation including the templates. Copy.ai even has a free plan. PRGuy charges you per template or ready-to-go pitch and it keeps providing a human-editor review. AI-powered Outreach Platforms Finding journalists’ contacts has always been and still quite a time consuming activity. Nowadays, buying email databases for “spray-and-pray” and the subsequent distribution is considered to be bad manners and an experienced PR specialist would never do so. Neither will they ask a colleague to share their media base Google spreadsheets. There are a lot of platforms available for businesses to automate marketing cold outreach efforts like SalesLoft. There are even platforms like SellScale that pull data from public internet sources to craft “hyper-specific” outreach. But this looks creepy and none of those will help with the media outreach. And again, nothing is low-budget about them. There are two options available for founders and PRs who want to automate the outreach and at the same time don’t spend a fortune: OnePitch and House of Pitch. Both are free of charge. OnePitch is a free version of Mack Ruck and other costly platforms. It suggests journalists based on your pitch and allows distribution within the platform. The House of Pitch in turn asks you to pick the most relevant journalists (or VC scouts!) according to their beats (industries of interests) prior to the distribution of the pitch. But there is one feature it has that is dope–you get a clear Yes or No response each time you reach out to a journalist. The pitches you send on HoP are Tinder-like cards that journalists sort Connect or Reject and you either meet with a reporter in an email or will get a “sorry, not a good fit” notification. Conclusion More tools aiming to help with marketing appear every month. However, only a few of them fit the PR needs. The most successful outreach efforts are still those that are personalized, targeted, and backed by genuine human interaction, not GPT. Top PR Tricks and Free Tools for Startups in the Era of Decreasing Valuations

The content creator economy has grown by leaps and bounds since the world heard of it 5 years ago. From channel monetization, and brand dealerships, to building an empire, the sky’s the limit for every creator who wants to venture out onto “the next leap.” On today’s episode of Startups On Demand, I am joined by , Forbes Contributor and Host of , where he interviews the biggest entrepreneurs in the world. Tom Ward The Tom Ward Show Today, we talk about optimizing content creation, what you can and can’t outsource, monetizing content, and the “next leap” for influencers and content creators. Omri: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career beginnings. Tom: I’m about as regular as a guy. If you can’t see me or if you’re just listening to my podcast, I’m a 44-year-old bald dad. I didn’t go to an Ivy League school, I didn’t start a million-dollar startup like someone who’s listening to this or reading this might have. I was messed up when I was a kid, and I got myself together in my late 20s – and I just needed a job. So there was a car dealership near my house, so I just started selling cars. And I was really good at it – I just kept getting promoted and made money, and it was fine. Then I got into retail and got a corporate job selling kitchen equipment to grocery stores. Now, I don’t know if you could imagine a more boring job, but it was a pretty boring job that I toughened up for about 10 years. After that, I started reading career books and started a pivot to change careers, and I read this book about how you can change your narrative at any time. So at any time in your life, if you’re listening, reading, or watching this – if you’re 50 years old and you’re stuck in a job you hate, it’s not too late. You can all of a sudden decide “I wanna be a hip-hop writer.” But everyone’s gonna say “what do you know about it?” But if you write about it, it’s the cheapest way to get evidence. You need evidence that you’re an expert in this area that you wanna go to. So to make the long story short, I just started blogging and writing, and Jessica Alba somehow found my little blog, shared an article I wrote on LinkedIn, went viral, and an editor of Forbes saw it and said “hey, do you wanna write for us?” and I said yes. So I started writing at Forbes. After that, I got PR pitches, and people started reaching out to me. I also started getting these cool interviews, and I was like “It’s kind of a waste of an hour if I’m sitting down with Kate Hudson and I just get an 800-word article out of it because there’s a lot of cool stuff in there that doesn’t fit in an article. So I decided to just film it myself. And I lost $20,000 of real money my first year, and I lost another $20,000 the next year. I just did that with no business strategy, no plan of income coming in, or no endgame whatsoever. So at the end of the day, I started earning money from it, and here we are. https://youtu.be/bmgdBhLB3Hg?embedable=true Omri: What was your target niche when you did the career pivot? Tom: Every book I’ve read said “niche down — find your niche, and the smaller the better.” I didn’t know what that was. I’m interested in a lot of things. I’m interested in health and fitness, I love music, and I love a lot of things. So I would just write whatever I wanted to write about. And then, my Forbes editor found my niche for me and assigned me to write about social media and marketing. Omri: How and when did you start to monetize after investing your own money? Tom: In the third year, I finally started making my own money. I got my views to a good, consistent point, I had good content, and I figured out how to really interview people. It needed a lot of finesse and directing. It took me 2 years to get my style down, get my views up, and get professional. And it’s all about having the right team. And after that, brands started reaching out to me, and that’s how I started to monetize. Omri: Tell me more about interviewing influencers. I read an article that you interviewed Jake Paul, right? Tom: That was the first one. I don’t focus on influencers anymore, only because I did it for a while and covered everybody, and I was always more interested in the business side of things, so now I’m more focused on entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs from all walks of life. But I did influencers hard for 4 years back when no one was covering them. It was just me and Taylor Lorenz, that’s it. No one was taking these kids seriously, and a PR guy pitched me Jake Paul, and back then, I had no idea who he was, no idea what a YouTuber was, how the business works, etc., and it went from there. Omri: What is the next leap for content creators after sponsorships, advertising, and monetization? Tom: Well, you don’t have to look far, it’s happening now. Starting from Jake Paul's years go to looking at where the influencer world is at right now, it’s night and day. Now, if you look at the big guys like Charli D’Amelio and Josh Richards, they don’t have venture capital. They went from doing brand deals to making their own empire. So they started coming up with their own products, and some would just slap their name on anything, while some took it seriously like the D’Amelios, who came up with a real full fashion line that’s a standalone business. From there, VCs started to take notice. So content creators have to come up with their own product, and they need to use their audience to tell them what product that is – build a community and use that community to build and sell products. It can be hard for an early-stage startup to get featured in tech news. But if hiring a PR consultant or agency will make a hole in the budget, what options do they have? Let’s dive into these PR tools and techniques which are used by PR professionals, so you can better understand the public relations process and get your startup noticed by the media. Especially since the beginning of the year is considered to be a slow season, there might be a spot on the news agenda for your startup. Preparing a pitch When you email journalists, this means you are pitching your startup or product to them. Basically, this is the process of selling your startup idea to a reporter who, in turn, wants to write an interesting story for their readers and get a lot of views. This is what you need to keep in mind when writing your pitch–it should be a solid basis for a compelling story about a problem and how it is solved by technology. You need to prove your point and provide evidence in no longer than three (short) paragraphs. Tools for writing a good pitch: You can use freemium-based AI-writing assistants such as or . The latter has a paraphrasing feature that helps you to sound clearer. Grammarly Linguix There are a lot of free templates on the internet, but to be honest, I’ve never seen a decent example that can be used by startups. However, there is a service which claims to provide the best matching pitch template (and a list of relevant journalists) based on your story, the industry of your startup, and the news hook. PR Guy Contacting a journalist Once your pitch is ready, you need to identify the best media contact and find their emails. I’m saying emails deliberately. Please do not pitch on Instagram, call out of the blue and add on Facebook. This might be considered harassment, and you could end up blacklisted. Probably not, but it sure feels like it sometimes. I was a PR guy with some tech skills before I became a tech guy with some PR skills. Its been an interesting transition. The world of marketing has been comfortable with the gays for quite a while now and they like what we’ve done with the place. Tech? Hmm, not quite yet. Recently, I was doing a bit of soft recruiting for my startup at a JS meetup and was explaining to a couple of guys how my cofounder (who is a lady’s man, btw) and I are determined to get to know people before we take new team members on board, at what is basically the ground floor. We want to make sure the team we build is with us for the long run. I said, “it’s kind of like dating” when describing our recruitment process, which pretty much made the next, final five minutes of our conversation completely awkward. I wouldn’t describe myself as a stereotype (nor would I do that about anyone else), but once you talk to me for a bit, I’ve got a wee bit of a flamboyance that probably makes most straight guys think, “ ?” seriously hmm, I wonder if this guy’s a cake eater The example I gave above is just one of many awkward encounters I’ve had navigating around in the bro-village. The tech world, all you bros included, is a pretty tolerant place (even if a bunch of folks haven’t updated their hacker ethic in a while). Entirely introverted, but tolerant nonetheless. Its this introversion that got me thinking: maybe the bros in the village need a little bit of guidance on how to deal with the gays. And that’s where this article comes into play. Here is a list of to-dos, what-not-to-dos and you-should-knows when encounter a gay in the village, because like it or not, ‘mos are inviting ourselves in and redecorating, just like we did Hollywood, and it’s going to be fabulous. Own that shit and make it your own. Make it mean something better than you and others think it does, (maybe, actually brotherly). Take the word ‘gay’ for instance. It used to mean happy, then it meant ‘burn in hell, deviant’ and now it means ‘ideal best friend’ to just about all the ladies ever. Gays did that. We are really good at PR. We owned our label and it is now glorious. And because of the way in which gays view the world, we are probably not going to be too worried about hurting your bro-feelings. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and tend to ridicule those who do. Because life’s too short. #2 Gays do know all the nice ladies. So make friends, you might get lucky… with a lady friend of ours! #3 I probably don’t want to sleep with you. A tech meetup or conference or whatever tech coffee clutch gathering you can think of, it’s not a place gays go to pick up. It’s probably the furthest thing from our minds, just like it’s probably the furthest thing from your mind. Look, we are so alike, bro! Seriously tho. Gays take their work just as seriously as you do. So, no need to cut the conversation short because you think I am looking at your man boobs. #4 Don’t try and set a gay up with every single other gay you know. It doesn’t work like that and chances are, we’re totally on top of our own setup/hookup program. I mean, we were swiping left and right analog-style way before Tinder. And an obligatory date because your new tech bro buddy thinks you should marry that gay guy his sister knows, does not sound like a good time. If after reading this, you are still going to insist on playing matchmaker, be sure the prospect is damn fine and have a picture handy. Bios are nice too. #5 If you are still insisting that I want to sleep with you, at least take it as a compliment. It means you’ve got great man boobs. Every tech-bro with his shirt off. I certainly don’t feel that way when I am ‘running’ (definitely not running) a coding marathon. #7 Embrace being uncomfortable, seek it out. Be open. Look, the tech world is suffering from some serious myopia. Diversity is a huge opportunity that is being missed by just about everyone who is pushing back against inclusion. The future of innovation isn’t going to be sourced in tunnel vision, it’s going to be sourced in perspective. Bro-only perspective is running on fumes, Mark. And if you really want to make some serious change, you are going to need to seek out some new vision. And quick. So, be proactive, be the change you want to see in the tech world. Tech can’t solve everything, it turns out, so social solutions, like making an effort to invite the local gay tech group to your next meetup, need to be made. Be intentional. Seek out discomfort and do it like a winner and take on a challenge— make friends with some tech gays who will make it their mission in life to weird you out. real End list. The only gay in the bro-village

ENTREPRENEURSHIP Stop me if you’ve heard this before — “I started XXX because I hated my job, and I wanted to do XXX”. Or “I hate my job. How can I start a startup/business?” I have never really understood these arguments. They may have their own merits, I am not sure. But I for one, just don’t see it. Actually every time I hear this, the only thought in my head is — What?? It’s great that you have started up on your own, or that you want to start. But how is it related to you hating your job? More importantly, why did you get in a job that you hated? If you hate your job, why aren’t you finding one that you would love? Is it possible that you don’t hate your job but what you’re doing on a day to day basis? That you’re still figuring out what is it that you want to do in life? How do you want to shape things forward. What is it that you are great at, feel passionately for and what gives you that warm feeling of pleasure? Is it possible that you’re still learning the chops? I’VE ALWAYS LOVED WHAT I WAS DOING I loved my job! Every single one of them. Well, other than two — my first job, and another from where I moved on after 2.5 months. As far as the first job is concerned, I was doing a lot of research work. It was fun, but not fulfilling. I couldn’t really find gratification deep within while I was doing that. So, 10 months into the job, I quit. The only other job that I wasn’t in love with was when I was trading in Eurodollar futures. The market is amazing, you lose a lot of money for the company, you make some as well, but at the end of the day, depending on your company’s DNA, it could feel like you are just going through the motions. Every. Single. Day. Sure, you get paid well. Really well. But, is that enough? I figured it wasn’t, so I moved on. Other than them, I have loved everything I have done in my professional life. I have loved conceptualizing and executing both small and big-ass marketing strategies for an e-commerce biggie. I have loved managing the brand for a tech magazine. I have loved handling the monetization strategy for a social gaming network. Most recently I was in love with handling business processes for a communication and collaboration company. ( ) Yes, like Slack. I started in, with handling marketing for one of the products and gradually moved on to setting up the entire sales team, processes, and strategy for another product. I was whatever the company needed me to be — a marketing guy, a PR guy, a content writer, a sales associate, the sales head. Whatever. We gradually increased our team size to quite a sizeable number, but I loved every day of it. I am still in touch with guys from my previous organization. Amazing people who were working in my team. Whom I had hired. And we don’t just socialize. We talk about work, they seek my advice when they feel stuck. They know they can do so because they know I will help. They know I loved what I was doing, and I left for reasons that had got nothing to do with how I felt about them or the work or my schedule. I left to start something I believed in. Something that was drawing me towards itself. Something where I felt I’ll be able to do things differently, and that feeling — it is exciting as fuck. I EVEN LOVED LEAVING A JOB I LOVED — TO DO NOTHING BUT TRAVEL I took a break from work — to travel through Europe and South East Asia. One and a half years, give or take. For 18 months straight — no work, all legs. Kept on traveling and traveling. I didn’t do it because I hated my job and needed to unwind. I did it because I wanted to experience it. I did it because I wanted to do it. I did not want to wait long enough for it to feel right. It felt right and I did it. Now, off of everything I have done — — I have been great at most of them, I have sucked or been naive at some. And that’s okay. I identified what is it that I was lacking and I fixed it. at the risk of sounding arrogant I have been good at my job because I did what I loved to do, so every day was fun. Did I have disagreements — with my team members, my CEOs and other teams? Of course. Who wouldn’t. But it was all part of a process. And it was all amazing. I like to think that I am quite good at what I do, and one of the main reasons is because I have always done what I thought I would love to do. And not just the role. The team. The team’s vision. The senior management. How they approach things. Everything has to come together. As a result, my new experiences keep on piling up on top of my previous learnings, and they form quite a cohesive bond — making my foundation stronger. SO WHY DID I QUIT AND START ON MY OWN? I started up because I saw problems that I felt I could fix. I saw a huge opportunity that existed, a void waiting to be filled. I started because I could see I was the right guy to try fixing it — to make a dent here, slash a couple of things there. I started because I wanted to do “more” of what I love to do, not because I didn’t already love what I was doing. And that, my friends, matters a lot. Such microtargeting of people can be highly effective in influencing business decisions or harming reputations. AI can significantly magnify the speed, scale, and spread of false content. Social media bots can be deployed to share and promote disinformation at scale; recommendation engines can be intentionally programmed to create so-called “filter bubbles,” where users are only exposed to specific bits of information (including frauds) based on their existing biases, preferences, and online behaviors. AI can also be operationalized to control and contaminate information more broadly. For example, the algorithms of search engines and other information discovery channels can be manipulated to artificially boost the visibility (or perceived importance) of certain content to alter or influence narratives around trending topics, issues, or events. Search engines like Google are already struggling with a rising tide of low-quality AI-generated content that is polluting and eroding the output quality of search results. AI has made it too easy for scammers and bad actors to create fake profiles, fake reviews, and fake websites. What’s more, generative language models have the ability to produce large volumes of original content, enabling propagandists to sound authoritative on a subject without having to copy/paste the same text across multiple websites. This makes it difficult for everyday users to distinguish between truth and falsehood and can undermine efforts to fact-check or debunk disinformation. Nation-state threat actors are using AI tools to conduct large-scale influence campaigns in order to destabilize democratic institutions and processes. The DOJ recently suspended nearly 1,000 Russian-operated bots and trolls on X [Twitter] that were impersonating Americans using AI-generated profile pictures and biographies. On underground market forums, threat actors are offering disinformation-as-a-service. This commercialization of disinformation is making it easier for amateur threat actors who lack the infrastructure and technical skills to launch their own large-scale and highly coordinated disinformation campaigns. As the market for such services grows, disinformation will become more widespread and commoditized. How Can Businesses Combat AI Disinformation? Disinformation is one of the biggest threats to governments, businesses, and societies. Sadly, humans are more likely to trust AI-generated content than trust human-generated content. If efforts are not made to stop this wild dissemination of false and misleading information, it will ultimately lead to an erosion of societal trust and the potential unraveling of our values. No doubt, regulators around the world have sprung into action, working on mandates and policies to thwart or curtail disinformation. But governments cannot tackle this alone.
